Reasons living in Australia is not suitable for everyone. (especially for me)
Contents: 1. Weather and Climate 2. Landscapes, Wildlife and Biodiversity 3. Modern Culture, Society and Linguistics 4. The Government, Work and Education 5. Travel, Transportation, Time and Space. 6. Poor Characteristics and Personal Ickies
1. Weather and Climate Australian summers are hot, dry and damaging to the human anatomy. Be warned of dry eye, skin burns, Eczema, Dehydration or even Melanoma because even the coldest cities of Australia can hit 40°C on its hottest days. 50.7 °C (123.3 °F) was the highest recorded temperature in January 2022 at Onslow, Western Australia. In Melbourne, the common term ‘Melbourne weather’ is used to describe the constant change of erratic weather as similar to having 4 seasons in one day. Burning hot, cold and dry, momentary hail storms the size of golf balls, pollen and hayfever season, thunderstorms that spark bushfires, and fiercely strong and fast winds on the flat terrains of Australia.
2. Landscapes, Wildlife and Biodiversity Generally a large flat, sandfilled island continent with reddish warm tones to its outlook of the environment from the widespread heat and dehydration of its landscapes. Animals are significantly larger in comparison to same species that were born in other countries. Mostly aggressive and dangerous especially the ones that were originated here. Snakes, jellyfishes, crocodiles, mosquitos, flies and ants can get to overwhelmingly huge sizes which are great in quantities too. Grass, trees, and flowers have significantly desert-like features, which are coarse, sharp and thick. With the harsh nature of its weather conditions, creates outcomes of the domino effects to the living things in the Australian environment itself. Don’t be surprized if flies the size of your toes comes annoying you while you cook outside, or when you encounter hearing or worse seeing raging possums fights every night above your house/inside the gaps of your house or the frequent occurrence of dead jellyfishes on the shores of your local beach!
3. Modern Culture, Society and Linguistics Nothing worse than to live, being surrounded by toxic people. Western colonized culture in the majority of Australian cities, are well known for white supremacist bias. Passive aggressive, racism, verbal, emotional, psychological abuse can send many to homelessness or mental health institutes. Being a victim of early bullying during my teen years, Me and some friends have experienced name calling, profanity speaking, or even degrading for not fitting into the typical culture and expectations of Melbourne, Australia for example, not owning a car, or not knowing how to clean the dishes in a specific way of which white people would. Local Australians generally speak with less of respect to each other as compared to other mannerly and well conformed countries. They tend to bully each other as a joke and overuse to devalue vulgarities. In todays society (especially of Gen Z) sarcasm and oversensitivity is capitalized alongside the influence of social media usage. Self categorization and hook up culture may be underlying issues to the cause of declining birth rates.
4. The Government, Work and Education It’s a monarch-commonwealth supported capitalist country with a national electoral system that runs state to state. Modern citizens of Australia generally despise and speak with ingratitude towards the Australian government, if you’re long term integrated with todays local communities, you’ll hear complaints about the governments’ financial, employment, energy and foreign affairs issues. The current education system follows of Horace Mann’s public industrial mass indoctrination. General workplace though may seem to have a little more freedom in todays age due to more financial freedom, variety of resources to consume from, and the innovation of uprising new jobs in the market. Typical 9-5 of 6 days a week, jobs are becoming less common as the rise of technology increases. Convenience and advanced gratifications can also have its hidden downsides.
5. Travel, Transportation, Time and Space. Being an isolated landmass in the middle of the Pacific ocean, inconveniences of import/export, and moving between people and things cause quite untimely disadvantages especially to the impatient ones. Each city is located far from each other, the most populated ones reside and invest all alongside the beaches, so travelling from one city to another will take you at least a few hours drive since public transport aren’t interconnected to the distances of city to cities. The typical mapping of public transportation routes to surround centralized business district - metropolitan areas. Therefore the further out from city corpo hotspots, the harder to find reliable transport. Australia has near opposite time zones as of USA so seasons occur like eg. Summer in Australia = Winter in USA. Getting to other countries by flight will mean travelling across the Australian continent or across the entire ocean for hours upon hours to get to the nearest capital city/country alone.
6. Poor Characteristics and Personal Ickies Inherently speaking, living in Australia for nearly 2 decades for me has been dissatisfying in terms of living standards, moralistic foundations, and affordability etc. Going to another prominent city in Australia means stepping into a whole new territory, each neighbouring suburb even has its own socio-economic demographics and individual identity! Its obvious how divided the races, religions and classes are here! Recreational drug use, alcohol culture and laziness very concerning. The Australian English has phonetically slowed and sluggish pronunciations to its common speech with 3 primary accents including the broad, conventional and elite accents. As a country of migrants and refugees, the result of generations of multiculturalization, in my opinion, has currently caused a quite moderated society to become widely bland to me. Every culture is inclusive in this country and most cuisines and practices etc. are accessible; so the richness from other ethnic cultures may easily replace public interests which can become watered down to historical records in the future. Neighbours and strangers may often be less welcoming and less willing to be associated, others may be overly intrusive, defensive and destructive depending on location and socio-economic background. Then there’s the passive coercion in making one to follow a specific way of living life eg. Vaccinations, masks, getting a car, a job, a monogamous love life and a child etc. But with protestors who may rebel, they also have their liberalized ways to disagree to things at a certain time, place. So without weaponary legalization, all the subtle patriarchy doesnt excert much power, international affairs are also barely associated by the Australian government.

thoughts: bts.
i've been a massive fan—a stan, or an army, is what they call it—for two years now. i never liked kpop. it wasn't discrimination but it's just that i'm extremely picky with music, with my least favorite genre being pop.
what attracted to me was their music video of dope. and i thought they were amazing.
then i stumbled upon their practice for their first concert and i was hooked. memorized. a bit guilty. slightly envious. and at awe of their hard work. i, myself, am someone who you could call a jack of all trades and i have a broad range of interests. but i was always too lazy and too doubtful of my abilities to fully pursue my passions. when i watched them, i felt incredibly amazed at how they put all their heart in every segment, how they weren't afraid to act silly and broke masculinity norms, how they put 999% of all they had into every single detail. i already knew kpop was full of talented and struggling people. but bts took it to a whole new level. i started to watch more and learn their story. i started to do my research. and not only did i fall in love, but they changed my life for the better.
i unconsciously started to do things with more vigor, bts in mind. i started to elevate myself and think, "they struggled through all that. they've been through worse, i can do this."
their story isn't some fairy tale. it's ugly, sad, full of many disappointments and unfair treatment, as well as dispair. bts' journey was one of struggle. they were edited out of shows. they were ignored. they were spat on. they were critisized by the general public and the music industry. they've gone through poverty. they've been attacked and stepped on so many times but they did not collapse. namjoon and yoongi's experience in the underground rapping scene of korea created distorted perspectives of women and hip hop. they've apologized profusely, called themselves out on it, which many do not even think to do in kpop, and learned their lessons by consulting different experts on women's studies, politics, and other issues. all while not mentioning it to the public. they did not do it to redeem their image, they did it solely for self improvement and the need to not hurt anyone through their self-composed lyrics again. quoting hoseok's words, "bts is a team that will not break. it is a team that can conquer hard times and trials."
yoongi said it himself that their group has done the most out of all the groups they've debuted with. they talk about societal issues, politics, women empowerment, mental issues, struggles of today's youth, temptation, and many more. they break the kpop stereotype and they do not hesitate to create music that generates a movement against the conservative norms of korea. they produce and compose their own music. they actually do try to make complete songs, not like those people who say they produce or compose after creating a single progression or a few lines. they stay humble, never failing to show their gratefulness. bowing not only towards fans who some artists think are beneath them, but also towards reporters and paparazzi. they stay true to their korean roots, declining opportunities to debut in america with english, while some try to break in the us music sphere with english lyrics and still fail. bts never tried to enter the us, they aimed for global success. whoever it was—disregarding race, ethnicity, or culture—they didn't just want to increase their popularity and garner fame, they wanted to unite people and make their lives better and happier. they did all this and more while keeping the rigid kpop culture of high self-maintenance, overbooked schedules that keep you awake for days at a time, image preservation and management, and difficult choreography. bts is known as a group that not only has fast and complex steps but they are also in-sync. they still sing live despite this, unlike many other groups. they have so much passion and a great deal of grit and tenacity. there is nothing to not love about them.
while the world now knows their name, i will never forget who they were. and i'm sure they will always remember as well. they were seven boys who slept in one room on the floor with nothing more than cheap and thin mattresses. seven boys who now consider themselves brothers. seven boys who've gone through poverty so bad, seokjin had to frequently borrow kitchen utensils and food from his mother bc they never had enough money for food. seven boys whose living room was once the size of half my bathroom. seven boys who wore fake designer clothing even in shows bc their no-name company was poor with a crumbling reputation.
they each have their own struggles, even worse than the ones stated above. and yet they maintain such a positive disposition that i can't help but sit back and think about how absolutely incredible their journey is. i know they have their own mental issues despite their fame and fortune, they've stated so before. but their fans—army—will always be there to help them, including myself.
the unfair treatment in korea continues on to this day. when they were #1 in all categories for mama—a large (corrupted) asian award show—1 million votes were removed from them, putting them in 2nd place. they never seem to get on the front page instantly, fans needing to resort to rioting in order for them to do so. newspaper columnists have admitted that they were being pressured by big companies to not write about bts.
as someone said, kpop became viral for being a circus. as entertainment for the international audience. if it wasn't bc of their upbeat catchiness, the choreography, the humor, the over-the-topness setting of the music video, then they wouldn't have gone viral. even now, foreign music is still looked down upon. but bts isn't some one hit wonder. it's the reveal of their growing popularity overseas. they've always had it, but no one ever really noticed until now. they are recognized bc of the group themselves, their message, and their music. they did not get famous overnight bc someone found one of their videos funny or weird. some don't even consider them as kpop. they look solely at bts, not that they're just some korean group. they are acknowledged for being themselves. and they don't even have to try. (i'm not gonna call out the other groups who have copied bts' social media habits and concepts since then. or their choreography. or their style. i'm not gonna call out the other companies who have continuously tried to break in the us market yet still failed. i will not. i will not stoop that low.)
no matter, if they will not appreciate bts, the whole world will. analysts stated that korea's itunes market increased from approx. 15-20% to 44% only because of bts. only. because. of. bts.
i’ve seen bts live. paid and waited a great deal for my royalty ticket. i almost passed out due to dehydration from waiting in line but it was all worth it. the fancams and hq pictures don’t do bts justice. i watched them from the front of the stage during soundcheck and the concert itself. they sing live perfectly and even if they had so many concerts before mine, they still gave it their all. i rewatched my videos and i could see the sheer amount of effort they placed into every part of the concert. it was wild. their facial expressions and dancing were on point and i’m not even exaggerating when i say their skin was glowing gold. they weren’t pale or tired, on the contrary, they looked absolutely ethereal. my respect for them skyrocketed and i couldn’t help but compare their concert to one direction’s, where i was also in front of the stage. they didn’t just goof around and sing, it was a whole package. the complete epitome of a performance.
i can't even explain how fulfilling it is to see people who's suffered so much succeed to this extent. it's fulfilling, satisfying, and the pride in myself will forever continue to soar.
and this is coming from a pessimistic girl (i'm working on the positivity) who's interested in mainly lo-fi, underground, indie, and hip-hop music. this is coming from someone who used to avoid kpop and from someone who used to judge people who pursued their passions and not succeed.
the true rise of bangtan has just begun, and it will not stop here.
let that sink in.

Dogs rescued from Asia in need of forever homes
New Post has been published on http://doggietrainingclasses.com/dogs-rescued-from-asia-in-need-of-forever-homes/
Dogs rescued from Asia in need of forever homes
For Tracy Harachi, a desire to help elephants in Asia led to another passion: rescuing dogs.
Since 2014, she and her husband Nathan Yoffa have volunteered at the Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand every year. The 150-acre sanctuary is home to 500 dogs and more than 40 elephants. Over the past five years, the Orcas Island couple has adopted their own dogs (and cats) from the sanctuary and transported dozens to the United States.
“I’ve been [a] flight volunteer for over 25 dogs from the Elephant Nature Park to help them get to their forever homes,” said Harachi, who is a professor at the University of Washington and travels to Cambodia, which borders Thailand, for social work. “Some have overnighted with me in Seattle, and then I’ve gotten them to their cargo flight to fly on to their final destination.”
Harachi partners with a woman in Portland, Oregon, who has also volunteered at the elephant sanctuary. She helps find foster families and adoptive parents for the animals, some of whom have physical handicaps and behavioral issues.
“I’ve offered assistance to share about dog behavior, training tips to try to make the transition go more smoothly,” Harachi said. “People ask why fly dogs over, but I help dogs anywhere, including locally having helped adopt multiple seniors who lived out their lives on Orcas.”
Harachi and Yaffa currently have a Cambodian street cat named Takeshi and dogs SeeKao and Boon Ngaam, both of whom were paraplegic. Through medical procedures, physical therapy and a lot of dedication, they both can walk, although Boon Ngaam still uses an underwater treadmill to develop the connection between her brain and legs.
All three animals are the best of friends although Takeshi is the boss of the entire household. In addition to her canine work, Harachi collaborates with a rescue shelter to take kittens and cats dumped at the pagoda near her hotel to get vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
“On occasion a few have wiggled their way into my heart and managed to hitch a ride back to Seattle,” she said.
Dogs currently in need of homes
Harachi brought back 4-year-old Pespi from the elephant park this past November, and he is still looking for a family to adopt him. He is 40 pounds and up to date on his shots and dental care. Pepsi lived in a run with dogs Woofoo and Kailey, who passed away last year.
“An escape plan was hatched to bring Pepsi and his pal Woofoo to the Pacific Northwest and help them join a forever home before it was too late. Woofoo found a home and is adopted in Seattle,” Harachi said.
Pepsi is easygoing, loves people and did well during a recent meet and greet with small children. He is currently living in a foster home in Portland, Oregon, with another dog, though ideally he’d be the only one in a household as he is described as “more of a people dog.”
Eight-year-old Jacky was born during the Bangkok floods in 2011, but remains very active. Jacky and her mother were rescued from the water and eventually brought to the elephant sanctuary. She initially lived in a run like Pepsi, but she is terrified of thunder and lightening and tried to escape, so she became one of the roaming animals on the property.
“She, too, is a people dog, preferring the company of her humans,” notes Harachi. “She currently does have two dog friends who live nearby who she gets to go on pack walks with. She can initially be fearful of a new dog, but if they are appropriately behaving dogs then she can be around them. She currently lives with a cat. She is likely to want to chase after a deer, and like most Asian street dogs should not be left out loose and expected to be able to hang around unsupervised.”
Some of the animals that Harachi transports are rescued from the meat trade. According to Humane Society International, 30 million dogs and 10 million cats are killed annually for human consumption across Asia. The animals are crowded onto trucks, where they endure dehydration, starvation, exposure to extreme cold and heat, broken limbs, shock and disease. They are typically killed by being electrocuted, bludgeoned or hanged.
“Across Asia, there is increasingly vocal local opposition to this trade due to cruelty, criminality and human health concerns. Dog meat is mainly, but not exclusively, eaten by older, male consumers under the misapprehension of health benefits,” according to www.hsi.org. “The Yulin festival in China is a dog-meat focused event. More dog meat is consumed during Bok Nal than during other times of year in South Korea. The World Health Organization warns that the trade, slaughter and consumption of dogs poses human health risks from trichinellosis, cholera and rabies. Dog meat bans exist in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore; most recently, Indonesia pledged support for a ban.”
Harachi says the dog meat trade is also present in Cambodia. She and a network of animal rescuers have mapped out locations of restaurants, breeders and slaughterhouses and post regularly on social media to raise awareness among local Cambodians.
She is hoping to find an adoptive family for Toby, who was rescued from the Korean dog meat market. He is having a difficult time finding a home off the island due to his size.
“Many interested people have weight restrictions at their apartment or condo,” Harachi said. “That’s really not a situation on Orcas so maybe there is a forever home on the islands for this sweet pooch. Despite being abused and literally on the way to the slaughter house, Toby is chill, likes humans — even children — and other dogs.”
Toby is a Tosa, also known as a Korean mastiff. They are considered gentle giants, and are often bred in dog farms because of their meat tenderness. Toby was found tied up outside, severely abused and neglected, and about to be sold to the slaughterhouse. He was rescued by the Jindo Love network, a group of volunteers focused on the dog meat trade in Korea, a year ago. He is now 85 pounds and around 5 years old. His foster mom Crystal Nam sponsored his transport to Seattle.
“Despite his beginnings, all he had was love in his heart. Fast forward to today, he is healthy and just waiting for his forever home and people,” writes Nam. “People often ask or challenge me on why I care so much about saving dogs overseas, there are so many more right here at home that need homes too. Yes, that’s true. There are problems everywhere and I know I can’t save every dog in the world. I care about this cause, because the plight of dogs in Asia and other countries is significantly worse. Governments, policies and cultural practices resist or prevent change.”
If you are interested in meeting Pepsi, Jacky or Toby, email Harachi at [email protected].

Description of Handbook of Microbiological Media 4th Edition
The fourth edition of the Handbook of Microbiological Media includes the formulations and descriptions of 7,080 media used for cultivating microorganisms—more than 1500 more than in the previous edition.  These include both classic and modern media used for the identification, cultivation, and maintenance of diverse bacteria, archaea, and fungi. Some of these microbiological media are produced by major suppliers of dehydrated media—including Oxoid, HiMedia, and BD Diagnostics (Difco, BBL, and GIBCO). These include all the media normally used in the clinical microbiology diagnostic laboratory and for the routine examination of food and water. Other media described in the fourth edition of the Handbook of Microbiological Media are used to cultivate specific strains of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protists, including many anaerobes and extremophiles. The fourth edition of the Handbook of Microbiological Media includes the media needed to cultivate the numerous microorganisms currently available from the world’s global bioresource centers (BRCs). The breadth of culture media in this comprehensive resource is enormous and has greatly expanded in recent years with the exploration of extreme habitats and the use of molecular methods to identify new lineages of bacteria and archaea. The media also represent significant advances in the ability to use chromogenic substrates to identify specific species and strains of bacteria, e.g., E. coli O157 and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These media are extremely useful for clinical diagnostics and for the protection of the food supply from pathogenic microorganisms. Additionally many culture media are now available that are free of animal components. Plant based media eliminate possible contamination with prions which is important for production of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
Organization
The media described in the Handbook of Microbiological Media are organized alphabetically. Synonyms for media are listed. The description of each medium includes its name(s), composition, instructions for preparation, commercial sources, safety cautions where needed, and uses.
Names of Media
Media often have numerous names. For the most part the fourth edition of the Handbook of Microbiological Media retains the original names assigned in the literature. In some cases media with identical compositions produced by different companies have different names. For example, TrypticaseTM Soy Agar produced as a BBL product of BD Diagnostic Systems, Tryptone Soy Agar produced by Oxoid Unipath, and Tryptic Soy Agar produced as a Difco product of BD Diagnostic Systems have identical compositions. Many media also are known by acronyms. TSA, for example, is the common acronym for TrypticaseTM Soy Agar. The fourth edition of the Handbook of Microbiological Media gives the various synonymous names and directs the reader to see the entry where the information about that medium is given. In cases where modifications to ap medium yield a new medium, such media generally are listed with the original medium name, followed by the term modified—for example, TSA, Modified, rather than Modified TSA. Media that do not have formal names are listed according to the organism grown on that medium—for example, Bacillus stearothermophilus Broth.
Composition of Media
Media for the cultivation of microorganisms contain the substances necessary to support the growth of microorganisms. Due to the diversity of microorganisms and their diverse metabolic pathways, there are numerous media. Even slight differences in the composition of a medium can result in dramatically different growth characteristics of microorganisms. When methods for culturing microorganisms were first developed in the nineteenth century, largely by Robert Koch and his colleagues, animal and plant tissues were principally used as sources of nutrients used to support microbial growth. One of the major discoveries of Fanny Hesse in Koch’s laboratory was that agar could be used to form solidified culture media on which microorganisms would grow. Extracts of plants and animal tissues were prepared as broths or mixed with agar to form a variety of culture media. Virtually any plant, animal, or animal organ was considered for use in preparing media. Infusions were prepared from beef heart, calf brains, and beef liver, as a few examples. These classic infusions still form the primary components of many media that are widely used today, such as Brain Heart Infusion Agar and Liver Broth. In the last few years attempts have been made to reformulate many media containing animal tissue extracts with plant materials. This has added greatly to the number of media that are commercially available. The composition section of each medium describes the ingredients that make up the medium, their amounts, and the pH. It lists those ingredients in order of decreasing amount. Solids are listed first showing the weights to be added, followed by liquids showing the volumes to be included in the medium. The composition uses generic terms where these are applicable. For example, pancreatic digest of casein is marketed by various manufacturers as trypticase, tryptone, and other commercial product names. While there may well be differences between these products, such differences are undefined. Variations also occur between batches of products produced as digests of animal tissues. Media for the cultivation of microorganisms have a source of carbon for incorporation into biomass. For autotrophs, the carbon source most often is carbon dioxide, which may be supplied as bicarbonate within the medium. Carbohydrates, such as glucose, or other organic compounds, such as acetate, various lipids, proteins, hydrocarbons, and other organic compounds, are included in media as sources of carbon for heterotrophs. These carbon sources may also serve as the supply of energy. Other compounds, such as ammonium ions, nitrite ions, elemental sulfur, and reduced iron, may be used as the sources of energy for the cultivation of autotrophs. Nitrogen also is required for microbial growth. It may be supplied as inorganic nitrogen compounds for the cultivation of some microorganisms but more commonly is supplied as proteins, peptones, or amino acids. Phosphates and metals, such as magnesium and iron, are also necessary components of microbiological media. Phosphates may also serve as buffers to maintain the pH of the medium within the growth tolerance limits of the microorganism being cultivated. Various additional growth factors may also be included in the media.
