The Gendered Gaze in the Superhero Genre
Whenever media objectification of women is brought up (eg. “sexualization of female bodies is because our culture is centered around the male gaze”), some people like to counter with “but what about all the male shirtless scenes in Marvel movies?” The point being made is really that women can’t complain about our bodies being sexualized in media because so are men’s! Another argument is “well, women have been sexualized in media for so long, so let’s sexualize the men, too! Equality!” Additionally, many filmmakers/actors/fans like to justify said male shirtless scenes with “Here’s some eye candy for the ladies!”
But here’s the thing. Sexualization of male bodies in film and comics doesn’t actually cater to the female gaze.
Hyper-sexualization of both women and men in comics increased drastically in the late 80s and defined the 90s, especially with the rise of artists like Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld.

You look at this and think “Hot women for straight men to look at and hot guys for straight women to look at. Sounds equal.” Except, female comic readership declined significantly in the 90s (mostly because of the increasing female objectification). Comics were being distributed to direct-market shops, which were largely male-dominated spaces. Even characters who were historically feminist and targeted at girls were being drawn by artists (Mike Deodato Jr.) who openly referred to their art as “porn Wonder Woman,” and were now being targeted at straight men. As far as the creators were concerned, their readers were predominantly male. Male comic creators were completely uninterested in catering to women. Their hyper-muscular male characters were targeted at men as power fantasies, and that’s really all there is to it.

These portrayals? Plenty of straight women appreciate it, sure, but this is still the male gaze. Male directors might convince themselves that it’s “a little something for the ladies,” but it’s not. It’s continuing a male-targeted trend of the genre.
I’ve watched the Superman movies (1970s to now) with several female friends, and my overwhelming observation has been that they are far more affected by Christopher Reeve’s sweetness and adorable awkwardness than they are by Henry Cavill’s muscles.
As a longtime member of internet fandom, I’ve also noticed a major trend in fanart drawn by women and queer people that actually minimizes the muscle definition of male superheroes, frequently accentuating their body fat and generally making them look very soft and squishy instead of bulging veins and eight-packs.
When women routinely prefer character depth to physical attractiveness; sweetness to big muscles; fuller bodies to tightly muscled ones; hand touches to shirtless scenes; it becomes clear that the “we’re doing this for the ladies 😉” argument has little ground to stand on. It’s not about equality. It’s not about pleasing women. It’s about male power and toxic masculinity.
So actually no, directors have no excuse for dehydrating Henry Cavill and Chris Hemsworth to the point of hospitalization so they can “look like a superhero” and give the ladies some eye candy.

PORN-CHIC AND FEMALE-SELF IMAGE
The social media platform Instagram is not the same as it use to be. From fun family portraits, updating people on their life’s, what adventures one goes on to a marketing tool and a place where women express and show them selves off. I do not know about you but when it comes to my friends and myself, our social media feeds in particular Instagram are bombarded with bikini pictures, lingerie sets or just women wearing clothes that extenuates their body’s and features. This sexiness in online environments is known as ‘porn-chic’, “a style that reflects the mainstreaming of aesthetics of commercial pornography within western societies” (Drenten, Gurrieri & Tyler, 2019).
This ‘porn-chic’ trend can be viewed both positively and negatively, one being positive and encouraging. Feminists can agree this movement is empowering and showing off how not everyone is perfect. Not afraid to hide ones stretch marks, and not everyone has to look like a movie star or model, embracing their bumps and lumps. One Instagram influencer who comes to mind includes Chelsea Culberston, @choosingchealsea. She is an Instagram influencer who I have been following now for a few years with now 175 thousand followers. She believes in body positivity and ‘a healthy, happy, self-loves’ life.

 She posts unedited and raw photos showing stretch marks, belly rolls, her cleavage and behind area. For example, on post was a picture of her leg, zoomed up on her stretch marks and captioned the image with “grateful for a body that ebbs & flows & adapts to change” (Culberston, 2020). She is spreading body positivity with make women be not ashamed of their flaws or imperfections, by highlighting hers and commenting about it in a positive manor encourages others to do so to themselves.

However on the flip side, an issue arises of influencers idealising their bodies, their lifestyles and image ideals that are unobtainable and unhealthy both physically and mentally. One of the most followed accounts of Instagram is Kim Kardashian, with 173 million followers and growing. Many of her Instagram photos include minimal clothing, zooming, or cropping the image to her breast or behind area. This may highlight to some that a core element of ‘porn-chic’ culture is about “making a woman appear fuckable to a generally assumed male audience.” (Drenten, Gurrieri & Tyler, 2019).  This is twisting around, the garmenting and blurring of pornographic imagery into traditionally no-pornographic forms of pop culture.

The issue arising is with many popular Instagram influencers and models, these standards are obtainable. From perfectly lit photos with professional hair and makeup artists and photographers. Also including photo editing and photo-shop to enhance a feature or disguise a flaw. Another scaring arsing trend with Instagram influencers and models is their plastic surgery work. Many have re-touched their bodies and faces but will not admit it, instead post sponsored Instagram advertisement posts (Dorfman, Vaca & Mahmood, 2020). For example, Kim Kardashians sister Khloe Kardashian. On her Instagram @Khloe Kardashian posting an ad for flat tummy co shakes, she is promoting their meal replacements shakes. She received a lot of negative feedback on the post as they are actually “not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and side effects can include "cramping, stomach pains, diarrhea, and dehydration." (Insider, 2018) . As well her audience also include young girls and can take this advertisement/post as they should skip meals and diet.

To conclude, women’s bodies are their own and they have the right to express and show them off as they please and this should be done without shame or embarrassment. However social media and Instagram is a very powerful platform with audiences of all ages on it. Influencers must be careful to no encourage negative habits or not be completely honest about their bodies.

Music festivals have been a meeting ground for individuals of different backgrounds to come together and enjoy their favorite artists and fun activities for millennia. Since 6th century BC, when the ancient Greeks gathered for music at olympic games, to today where Coachella has captured the cultural evolution of youth since 1999. They haven’t really changed from the Greeks to about 2018. But the entire landscape of festivals changed by the end of 2019. Covid-19 caused the halt of one of the biggest musical productions of the year and has still been affecting it ever since. In fact, Coachella was actually canceled in 2020 and 2021, for the first time in its short history, due to the Pandemic.

The festival organization usually hosts approximately 125,000 people a day during a three day period. In 2019, the festival only saw 153,000 individuals in attendance in total, bringing in $16.3 million in revenue, this is just before the virus was a concern but had little buzz. The next two years the festival canceled its events, leaving millions wondering if anything is going to be the same. People were devastated after the news of the cancellation spread, but not surprised. It was the height of the pandemic and what many thought would be a two-week lockdown turned into a three year battle. For the Industry as a whole they saw reduced attendance from 2019 to 2021. There is a steady decreasing trend which spells trouble for future growth. 
In 2021, the newly popular festival ASTROWORLD, headlined by Travis Scott was in media crosshairs after 9 people were confirmed dead due to overdose, trampling, and dehydration. About 50,000 people attended this event. After the unfortunate tragedy, Scott was under fire for not stopping the show and not having better safety measures in cases like these. The concert was simply out of control from the beginning, as attendees were breaking barriers, rushing checkpoints and defacing property, and it led to a catastrophic outcome. And this is not the only music event where people have died. In 2017, an armed gunman shot and killed 22 people at an Arianna Grande concert. This tragedy sparked worldwide shock and horror that such things still happen this horrific. It leaves me to wonder, as the festival and concert industry battle not only public health risks like, Covid-19 and the Omicron Variant but also physical risks, like injury and death, what changes will we see if any to combat these issues and put the public at ease? 
Authorities across the US say "they're committed to preventing another tragedy"
 Tips on accommodating Public fear for physical safety:
- Implement structured exit rows easily accessible throughout the grounds to allow people to safely and swiftly exit the crowd if needed.
- Increase entrance and checkpoint security and staff. Have a more thorough searching process when entering the festival. Increase festival staff visibility to make them easy to find in an emergency. 
- Create a system of entering areas and seating/standing that allows people to travel quickly, but most importantly organized and safely.
- Create an app that gets you medical assistance, staff assistance, security, and map access with the click of a button and allow those with tickets to download.
Tips on accommodating Public fear for health safety:
- Provide free masks to attendees
- Require vaccine card for entrance
- RFID wristbands to help with contact tracing. A program that is installed in the bracelet in each bracelet with unique id codes, that keeps track of other wristbands you have came in contact with
- Allow a version of the events to be streamed live/online for a fee. This may reduce attendance but may increase sales, allowing a broader less wealthy market to participate in the events. And less people will be at the festival to spread any viruses.

This Is What Latinos Think Everyone Got Wrong About El Paso
As a reporter, I’ve talked to immigration activists for the better part of a decade. They don’t often cry, at least not in front of me.
But all day on Sunday, the day after the shooting in El Paso, hardened advocates became emotional while explaining what it’s like to live in the United States after a killer drove 10 hours to kill Mexicans, Latinos and immigrants. The next day I still felt restless after a conversation with a friend. She had been crying because her husband overheard white men at the community pool remarking that while they didn’t agree with the killings — how magnanimous — they, too, didn’t want white people to be “wiped out” and for Hispanics to “take over.”

Where was this said? The deeply Republican city of Los Angeles, of course.
“He openly was discussing this like it was sports talk,” she told me, furious. “After 20 people are dead.”
The news media’s approach to its coverage of the El Paso shooting has obscured what made it uniquely horrifying for the Latino community. From the moment the shots were fired, this was a trend story: Another mass shooting, so let’s restart our debates about gun control and mental illness, maybe pull up some video game b-roll. And after so many shootings in recent years, journalists have decided it’s wrong to give too much attention to the shooter, so we downplayed his name and face, his bizarre and hateful manifesto.
But the media’s desire to erase the shooter and his ideology ended up erasing his victims and their community, too. While the news media successfully portrayed this shooting as part of a national epidemic of mass killings, we failed to accurately convey how this one was different. The visceral emotions of the Latinos I spoke with should have been—and should still be—front and center.
After years of covering immigration, I thought I understood how immigrants felt, because of our similar backgrounds. But I didn’t, not really. I’m Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian and from New York. Like many Hispanics, I’ve known undocumented people, but while I could empathizewith immigrants going through hardship, that’s not the same as sharing their experience.
This killer expressly traveled to a city filled with Mexicans and immigrants. This is new territory. The El Paso shooting isn’t just a sad moment that will pass, but the culmination of an anti-immigrant four decades in politics that ratcheted up in the 1990s and 2000s and has become only louder, emboldened and unchecked by American leaders, led by the president but certainly not just by him.
Of the 49 victims three years ago at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, 90 percent were Latino. Almost half were Puerto Rican. Others were Colombians, Mexicans and Dominicans. But what makes El Paso different is that people were targeted, not by someone pledging themselves to ISIS, but to white supremacy.
“Now Hispanic Americans have been targeted, some who are immigrants, and all who have limited political power,” I wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. “That’s what’s going on. And people are terrified.”
Then the messages starting coming in.
I received more than 160 private messages on Twitter along with some emails and texts from people who told me they didn’t have a safe space to share these stories.
They were from immigrants and people born in this country just like me. They were from older people scared for their children and grandchildren, but also from teenagers, heartbreakingly young teens of 16 and 17, who shouldn’t have to worry that someone is going to tell them to “go back to Mexico” and threaten to attack them while walking their dog if they don’t cross the streetnow. They were from people in red states and blue states, the united states of hating immigrants and people who just look like they might be. They were from biracial people, but also from white people who explained that their sister had married a Latino man and that means they have two Latina nieces, or a grandson, and they’re scared of the ways their neighbors might try to hurt them — with words they won’t forget or violence that could take them away forever.
A Latina in a predominantly Hispanic border city “very much like El Paso” told me she has a new job, overseeing a team of mostly Hispanic staff, with her name on the door — something to really be proud of. But instead she’s terrified, she said, because the office is marketed toward Latinos and that means she feels like a target.
A Dreamer in Texas told me he was terrified of taking his son to stores or crowded places, and said he warned his parents not to speak Spanish in public. A first-generation Salvadoran man with a wife who is white said they just had a baby boy four weeks ago. He said he has told her he hopes the baby doesn’t have dark skin.
A white man said his Latina wife from the Rio Grande Valley broke down after reading the shooter’s manifesto. She told him she’s sorry if their future kids are targets because of her.
There were people who said they wish they didn’t have an accent so they could pass as white, and others who said they are ashamed to be relieved they can pass as white. “We’re not fine,” a resident of a border town wrote to me.
And then the process started all over again. A massive Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid at seven food processing plants in Morton, Mississippi, led to the arrests of 680 undocumented workers, a record. Children cried outside the gates for their parents. Wives came to the scene to say goodbye to their husbands. It was a new method for separating families, but with the same result.
At first I didn’t watch the video of 11-year-old Magdalena Gomez Gregorio tearfully begging the government to release her father every time it popped up online, because while as a journalist I understand the news value of these images to show the human cost of Trump’s immigration policy, I’ve personally found it hard to continue looking at haunting images like it. I remember little Jakelin, 7, who died of dehydration in U.S. custody last year, or Oscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his 23-month-old daughter, Angie Valeria, face down in the Rio Grande in June, their tragedy transformed into a small part of the perpetual motion machine of online content. But I watched the video as I wrote this paragraph, of her asking the government to “please show some heart,” between sobs, while adding that her father is not a criminal.
Like her, many Hispanics are worried. They live in parts of the South where there aren’t many Latinos, but also in majority-Hispanic areas where the actions of an outsider coming to a border town to kill means the cocoon of community doesn’t present the sense of protection it once did. But even in this dark moment there are hopeful signs.
The Latino community in the United States is not monolithic. At most, we have a shared language that not all speak. But I’ve seen a growing awareness of people sticking together online, as people check on one another on Instagram, in person and on the phone. There is fear, but people are also resolute that things will get better. And some wanted to make clear to me that while they’re well aware of how deeply awful this moment is, they still stand in defiance of those who would instill fear.
“I am done being terrorized,” one young man wrote to me. “My stepdad didn’t march and organize in the Chicano movement for our generation to live in fear.”
And while I think the news media should do better to contextualize the El Paso attack as a toxic brew of American gun culture and hatred of Latinos, there has been a lot of good coverage, too. Univision preempted its programming with a prime-time special by Jorge Ramos and Patricia Janiot titled “Hispanics in the Crosshairs,” and Telemundo’s José Díaz-Balart interviewed El Paso victims from the hospital, sharing Spanish-language texts exchanged between a mother and her daughter. Cassandra Jaramillo and Alfredo Corchado of theDallas Morning Newsfiled big-hearted stories from El Paso that centered on local heroes and spotlighted the community’s pain, and theLos Angeles Timesreporters Esmeralda Bermudez, Paloma Esquivel and Cindy Carcamo elevated the voices of Latino residents and grappled with the Trump factor. CNN’s Nicole Chavez covered how “Walmart united Americans and Mexicans in El Paso for decades” and the network’s Nick Valencia convened a round table of Hispanics from El Paso about “The Impact of Trump’s Rhetoric on Hispanic Americans.” For the “CBS Evening News,” Manuel Bojorquez spoke to a roundtable of El Paso Latinos, one of whom said Trump “has been poisoning so many people with his words and targeting us Latinos when all we do is work.”
I believe in and am still awed by the power of journalism, of documenting people’s stories so better-informed citizens can rally around their neighbors and cast out the ignorance that led to this shameful stain on our country’s history. As one person, who came to the country legally at the age of 19, wrote to me, the pain is relatively recent, but there is an antidote.
“It is really the last few months that I feel not wanted by my fellow Americans and it hurts,” she wrote. “It hurts because we contribute to the economy, to the food and the culture. I know the vast majority of Americans do not feel this way about us, but we will need you to speak up.”
