Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Why am I reviewing this book?
Technically, I read this book back in middle school, but rereading it has revealed to me that I remembered absolutely nothing from this book. (I was surprised when they mentioned a war, that's how much I forgot.) So, I thought I'd do a review for this one, especially since it's so popular.

In a dystopian world created by unknown circumstances, humans are divided into the normal ones with red blood and ones with superpowers and silver blood. Reds make up most of the population, but Silvers are the ones in power. After an accident, Mare Barrow, a Red, is revealed to have the power to control and manipulate electricity, so the Silver royalty decide to pass her off as a lost princess. Mare, especially after experiencing the brutality of Silvers firsthand, takes the opportunity to join with the Scarlet Guard, a rebel organization.
The plot was very typical for a YA book, a rebellion against oppression complete with some romance; bonus points for an arranged marriage between two people meant to hate each other! To be fair, it was published in 2015, so this sort of story was all the rage and not quite as overdone as it is today. While the main plot did bore me a little, especially around the middle, there were some really interesting worldbuilding/side story questions that made me need to know more. I'm particularly invested in how Mare can create rather than just manipulate like most Silvers, and I'm very curious to see if that will play a part in the later books.
Also, that plot twist at the end did take me by surprise. I do wish there had been some more hinting towards it, the kind that makes you feel dumb for not seeing it before, but it wasn't out of the blue, and I felt genuinely betrayed.

While Mare was written at the height of the mediocre YA protagonist era, I actually liked her. I appreciated that her motivation wasn't justice or revenge or any abstract concept, but rather that she makes decisions based on her personal connections. The whole mess gets started so she can save Kilorn, she plays along with the Silvers to protect her family, she joins the Scarlet Guard to honor Shade, etc.
I'll be honest, Cal was boring. I couldn't find myself engaging in any of the romance between him and Mare, and his worldviews and morals were just too...colonizer-esque for me. The only time I liked him was when he took Mare back home, but then he immediately ruined it after, so that was short-lived.
Maven, on the other hand, was definitely the superior love interest for me. I found him sweet and genuine, and I couldn't believe Mare was even sparing Reds-are-inferior Cal a second glance when Maven, her fellow rebel, was right there.
(spoiler!) I think it's because I was so attached to Maven that his betrayal hit so hard. I still hope he'll switch sides in the later books (endspoiler!)
As for the side characters, my favorite was Farley. I loved her so much, and I really want to know more about her past. Kilorn was funny, if just because he's so obviously in love with Mare while she has two princes fighting over her. The queen was such a horribly good villain; I hated her so much. Overall, except for Cal, I found the characters interesting and well-written.

The writing style was pretty standard for a YA book. The characters were well-portrayed, and I found that action was pretty well written. The final combat scene was so intense; Mare's use of strategy rather than her ability to win was a clever testament to the power Reds hold beyond Silver abilities. Unfortunately, there was just something about the middle of the book that dragged a little, so the pacing was off, hence why this score is a little lower.

I probably would've worshipped this book back in middle school, but I do feel it has...faded over the years. Maybe it's because I'm older and read much more now, but this book plays into tropes far too strongly for me. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I liked the main character as much as a did. As with most YA books written in the early 2010s, it's definitely a good book for someone just starting to transition from young reader to young adult, but as the genre has developed it's fallen out of style. It's still a good book, but it probably won't appeal to an older audience like some other teenage-targeting books can. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy classic YA, dystopias, and the arranged marriage trope.

okay but for the candy-canes
they might be the ropes to Manx in some way and also that sneak peak video *spoilers* Lou says that Wayne was sleepwalking. and description for episode did say Wayne will have strange dreams so that could be two things. *endspoiler*
this also brings me back to Hailey, cause she had a canycane and she drew a gas mask in chalk so who knows how long that she had the candycane - but if it was a couple days then perhaps Manx was talking to her through her dreams *cause he did not know where her location was either*  or did perhaps Hailey saw the future without realizing it? which makes me think the candycane does keep track of the kids - perhaps the general location but not the exact location so Manx has to use something else to get that information. 
we did see Manx use his dream tricks before - with Bing when they first met in some way. There was a dream Bing has before meeting Manx and second when he is drugged cause ‘CL is pave on Dreams’ which makes me think Manx is a manipulator when creating dreams cause he likes to live in his own imagination a lot.
which brings me back to Wayne cause Manx doesn’t know where he’s going to find the kid again. So this makes  me think -
1. Wayne could just be dreaming ChristmasLand and Manx get information out of him cause Manx might not know where he is  - and 2. I’m Guessing the end game for Manx is either by kill Vic’s kid *this doesn’t make sense i know*  /or/ taking him to ChristmasLand himself.  So if Wayne is sleepwalking he could be under dream illusion spell to think he is walking someplace he’s familiar with - but in reality he could be walking right into the Wraith Car instead  OR he could be walking to his death.  cause either way Manx would win in this scenario.

Man your pride and prejudice stuff are THE TAKES especially the modern ones. How do you think the whole mini-arc where Lizzie is at Pemberley work in a modern setting?
i feel almost as if this would be hypocritical of me to say, except that it’s not bc I always stress that i do enjoy it when i get snippy at ppl rec’ing it to me as if I was born under a rock yesterday, but I think Lizzie Bennet Diaries did it really well. And it’s one of those things where I can’t just like.... adapt that one scene, it has to fit into the context of the wider piece, there’s a hundred different ways to do it. I read this book, Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg (it was light and fluffy and fun, I would recommend it if ur the kind of person who likes reading a bunch of different iterations of the same fanfic trope bc it makes ur heart feel happy, bc it’s not.... like i’m not gonna say it’s High Lit or anything but it’s a good beach read and if u like Pride and Prejudice it adapts it well. I was at a panel the author was doing at NTTBF in 2015 and she was like “I was thinking about what in the modern day has the same gravity as choosing husbands in the regency and I realized- picking a prom date” and she’s RIGHT anyway I definitely recommend it if u wanna feel easy happy feelings) where 
(SPOILERS?) the Pemberley arc was adapted, iirc, as Lizzie meeting someone she idolizes, and Darcy was the one responsible for her having that opportunity, and it was another really good way to adapt it.(ENDSPOILERS)
Anyway if ur wanting me to give it the “Mrs B as a soccer mom” treatment- to me the core of the Pemberley arc would be the fact that Elizabeth is meeting Darcy on his home turf, bc up until this point she’s seen him in Hertfordshire, or at Rosings Park, and each of those places isn’t.... Darcy, yk? The Pemberley arc comes, necessarily, after Elizabeth’s opinion has changed drastically, bc she’s seeing Darcy at his heart, both in the metaphorical sense of understanding who he is after being caught up in her prejudice for a really long time, and in the literal sense of visiting his home, where he’s most himself, where everything has Darcy all over it. If she’d gone to Pemberley before Rosings, she would just think the whole place was insufferably luxurious and gauche, but the fact that she’s there after finding out what he’s really like allows her to see it through the lens of “This is Darcy, who I was wrong about, and his house is beautiful, and it could be my house, and I have never been more miserable or filled w/ regret in my life”
God now u have me thinking about location paralleling the progress of Lizzie’s opinion of Darcy which is not an essay i have time to write tonight

tonight on spontaneous media thoughts with a-flyleaf, some rambles on Paranoia Agent because yours truly just went and binged another old anime maybe two people and a paperclip have ever heard of!
so a few weeks ago I somehow got into the mini habit of watching videos on the side while drawing, splitting my desktop between art on one half and youtube on the other. somehow the videos of choice ended up being anime reviews, because I... I don’t know, really. :V I’ve watched like 5 anime now, this one included, and wasn’t particularly planning on adding any more to that little lineup. (keep meaning to check out cowboy beepboop but EH.) the lack of investment helps with the “wait did I just miss something” multitasking mood I guess...?
anyway it was a short-lived habit if only because I ran out of stuff that needed drawing aka Image Comic Process but I digress. Paranoia Agent first came to my attention indirectly through... something completely different! \o/
in entirely unrelated circumstances, stumbled upon this article a few days ago and the “realistic portrayal” example caught my attention. a brief comment dig later and the name was identified, and it... features a weird cartoon dog? the wikipedia premise intrigued me but it ended up on my hypothetical neverending list of stuff to check out.
I mention the review thing because, while procrastinating on everything earlier today, I found this video and it immediately caught my attention. and hey, looks like the whole dub is up on youtube, only 13 episodes so might as well!
...not that I’d. necessarily recommend the youtube dub upload. it lacks subtitles for the writing which is actually pretty damn essential.
go watch that review if you haven’t already, because it sums up the show better than I ever could and talks about what hooked me: a basis in psychology and experimental art.
AND NOW FOR MY ACTUAL THOUGHTS ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ (to be formatted in bullet points later probably, again tfw mobile) edit 11/21: done, plus some additional thoughts after reading a few reviews/analyses around the web
it practically starts with a bang via baseball bat, and imo the first four episodes are the strongest of the series. in addition to the clever toying with art style as the video describes, we’re introduced to an ensemble cast of not necessarily likable but no less complex characters, and I always appreciate it when media doesn’t seem to be hitting you over the head (harhar) with LIKE THIS PERSON DAMMIT.
while I don’t have dissociative identity disorder and thus can’t speak to accuracy in its portrayal or weirdness in the subplot’s resolution, episode four three* also had one of the first examples I’ve seen of a character with “multiple personalities” that didn’t lean on the tired but one of them... is a MURDERER schtick.
*I initially got the numbering messed up here; the episode with the character who has DID is third, not fourth.
the entire series explores the idea of fiction and reality - no, this is neither the time nor place for the Shipping Debacle(TM), moreso in how fiction is a form of escapism both destructive yet necessary in just about everyone’s lives. the experimental elements play with this well, forcing the viewer to think about why the art is changing the way it does.
until around the end of episode 4*, it’s relatively clear when we’re getting a glimpse into a character’s psyche vs seeing what’s actually going on. and then the next installment hits, and it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of people bail at this point. it’s not bad necessarily, but the line between fantasy and reality isn’t just blurred - save for a few quick cuts, said line is utterly trampled. symbolism runs rampant and it can be tricky to figure out exactly what’s Actually going on, if anything at all - more on this later.
*e: this time I actually do mean the fourth episode.
on the topic of symbolism, there’s definitely something symbolic going on with the crows/ravens (death?) and to some extent color (namely gold/yellow, green, and red) but I haven’t quite put my finger on it.
you know that thing the video says about Lil Slugger being a manifestation of mass hysteria and destructive escapism? (if you don’t, what are you waiting for >:V it’s about 10 minutes long if you skip the spoilery part.) turns out, he really truly is, and it’s not just metaphors.
spoilers ahead; I’d recommend going in blind but use your best judgment, I know I might not have been so intrigued if not for reading the entire wikipedia plot synopsis in advance. why do I keep getting into media by knowing the Big Reveals first.
on one hand, I really like Lil Slugger being both symbolic and a literal supernatural threat. what I’m much less sold on, however, is how the less explained aspects are incorporated, namely towards the end. (big spoiler warning again, last chance!)
so what exactly DID happen to Harumi with the weird clownish smile makeup? what’s all this prophetic babbling from an old dude who really likes chalk (and whose ramblings admittedly might’ve made more sense if I could actually read his stuff), and how does he know it? what’s the deal with the otaku dude and his magical talking figurines? who knows! who cares, I guess. it’s all in the name of thematic significance - or to put it ironically, ~it’s media~
I can respect that as an artistic direction but it can feel a bit stranger than necessary, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending. so, what, suddenly chief’s 2d dream world is an actual real place he goes to? the “darkness closing in” is an actual black blob? holy shit, I really must emphasize the otaku dude’s weird voodoo sculptures and bascially everything else about him. th... the ex-“good cop” is now a wannabe superhero?? you do have to read between the lines to an extent to really Get the characters at times, which I actually like, but imo this was pushing it.
actually even before the climactic sequence I was... less than thrilled with the wife’s monologue. for the most part the show is good about not talking down to the viewer, obligatory exposition sprinkles aside, but just in case you weren’t sure what the themes were yet, here they are ft. odd visual echoing that doesn’t seem particularly relevant to the speaker’s state of mind!
there’s a bit more thematic narm towards the finale, especially from local sidekick-turned-video game hero, but at that point I was too busy wondering what the hell was going on to be too bothered.
e: several analyses and a rewatch later, the end of Harumi’s episode seems less nonsensical. it still doesn’t quite explain when she found the time to throw on all that makeup, but as with many other aspects of the series I was left baffled by at first (up to and including weird old math man), it makes much more sense thematically. Paranoia Agent is not a show meant to be taken at face value and trying to understand it all literally is an exercise in futility - not for everyone, but if you are willing to reconsider how you’re parsing it, it’s worthwhile. ...I’m still confused by otaku dude’s figurines, though >:V
/endspoilers (for now)
DESPITE the spoiler-loaded nitpicking above, overall I found it a solid watch - and the irony of bingeing it to procrastinate on school isn’t lost on me, especially after an all-too-relatable vignette featuring a student in the throes of quadratic equations.
while it definitely includes some darker themes, up to and including an episode about three internet friends meeting up to carry out a sort of suicide pact (which again probably would’ve been clearer if the version I watched had subtitles for text), the tone never feels particularly hopeless. it deals with the self-detrimental effects of overindulging in escapism, sure, but isn’t exactly MEDIA IS BAD TECHNOLOGY IS SCARY THE NEW GENERATION SUCKS. (one character has a similar attitude but it’s based more in nostalgia than hatred of the modern.)
reality sucks but you gotta face it and own up to your fuckups, pal, sorry! but rest and respite are important, too, lest you end up like the animation monkey whose very animation becomes rougher as the sleep deprivation really kicks in.
yes, monkey. not literally but definitely in design (no sameface \o/) and arguably behavior. there were a few comedic moments throughout the show, albeit often dark and/or satirically based so YMMV on how much they actually lighten the mood. for what it’s worth, the episode with the aforementioned suicide pact was probably the overall funniest.
overall I would recommend it as a good thought-provoking series, although if you’re having trouble at the fifth episode I won’t blame you for not sticking it to the end. personally, I kept watching because A) I wanted to see just how the murderous baseball kid mystery turned out & B) the art and symbolism shenanigans up to that point, definitely including the intro, had already given me a few Ideas(TM) and I wanted to see what else was in store. worth it? sure, but don’t expect too many explanations on the supernatural parts.
okay one more spoilery detour - and it’s a VERY BIG spoiler that I am actually going to encourage you not to read if you plan on watching. seriously. (e: format isn’t a mistake, I think it works better connected in paragraphs.)
sooo after skimming the plot synopsis and watching that entire review video, I already knew the thing about Maromi being based on a dead dog and Lil Slugger being the mystery assailant. what I did not expect was even that being a lie, in a way that I won’t specify because I’ve said too much already. and while I question the use of what I’m guessing was pms of all things, I actually really liked that twist.
HOWEVER. given that it all comes back to Tsukiko, she was fucking robbed in the character arc department. I get that she’s quiet and secretive so we don’t get any real details on her past until last second, which imo was a really forced reveal (seriously what is WITH those anime girls and their magic prophetic video game), and again I do like how she pretty much has a victim complex and that basically causes everything.
what I don’t like is that we needed cop superhero dude to lay it all out for her in terms of Big Realization Moments. everything only really gets “resolved” because she finally comes to terms with & takes responsibility for her mistake, but what leads her to this action? guys yell at her for fucking up and everyone gets consumed by inexplicable black ooze? EHHHHHHH I don’t buy it.
the chief’s mini-arc with his wife, which unfortunately was more told than shown (sensibly, so we could get Slugger’s reactions to the story, but it doesn’t mean I’m happy with it), was predictable but IMO believable. I definitely don’t think every story has to have clearly-defined protagonist/antagonist characters, especially with the “antagonist” here being a man vs society type of setup, but the end sequence seemed confused on who the real “hero” was supposed to be.
Ikari got the Big Moments of realizing he couldn’t live a lie forever, of smashing his dream world. Tsukiko... gets to go back in time and hug her dog, I guess? where was her moment, however subtle, of realizing she actually doesn’t NEED this little pink dog to save and protect her from reality. if that was supposed to be conveyed when her younger self started making stuff up it... lost me, unfortunately. as far as I registered it went straight for the dog and apology.
e: and you know, after all the aforementioned reading, I’m still inclined to agree with my initial thoughts - HOWEVER. this is a show that lives, breathes, thrives on thematic significance. character development and miniature arcs happen, absolutely, but they’re not the focal point. I can appreciate the ending’s direction much more if I kick conventional thoughts on character progression to the curb.
oh, and the intro? with everyone laughing with chaotic and/or destructive backgrounds while the random mysterious old people get a fancy restaurant and the goddamn moon? guessing the latter is because ~universal themes~ or something but the formal setting after a series of Heck is a moment of fridge logic - the woman’s homeless. she’s probably no stranger to more ravaged settings.
e: oh yeah, and something else I noticed about the intro - everyone is laughing, yes, but Tsukiko’s doesn’t seem... real. everyone else (minus Lil Slugger I guess but his eyes aren’t shown) has the characteristic squint of a genuine smile, but she’s wide-eyed as ever. maybe foreshadowing how she’s the one behind all this...? hrmm.
alrighty no more spoilers For Real This Time, just some miscellaneous notes that didn’t really fit elsewhere
one side character has the same voice as my favorite character from Urasawa’s Monster so that was neat. turns out detective #2 also shares actors with Monster’s protagonist, which took me longer to catch onto but was VERY amusing once noticed.
there’s no overt fanservice, minus like one or two questionable angles that aren’t even in the spotlight. a couple episodes have some Unfortunate Closeups but they’re entirely in service of the story; you’re definitely not supposed to be comfortable with it.
WHERE ARE THE OFF CROSSOVERS.
e: actually, for various spoilery reasons, I would not be the least bit surprised if this influenced OFF to some extent. but that’s another ramble for another time.

Feel free to ignore my ramblings below, although I’m probably going to start posting frequently about a particular topic mentioned once another week or so has passed. If I can even have that much self-restraint in the first place, aha.
Gosh dangit, if I wasn’t so busy with commissions right now you can bet I’d be drawing fanart of a certain character from NDRV3 (New Danganronpa V3) that was like hands down my fricking favorite from that game.
THERE ARE NO SPOILERS FOR NDRV3 IN THIS POST. I WOULD OTHERWISE BE TAGGING IT. TRUST ME, I HATE SPOILERS AS MUCH AS ANYONE ELSE OKAY.
Also this character - who will go unmentioned for now - is definitely my second favorite character from the DR franchise as a whole?????? And possibly my fourth favorite fictional character right after Flowey??????? I can’t honestly tell, I’m still trying to sort out the overwhelming amount of feelings I have for this character. Please help me holy crap ajhsfdgdjfjdfdhjfhjdfjhdfjh LMAO. You can bet I WILL be posting a lot of stuff about this character though.
I’ve like considered cosplaying on and off, and this is also the first character where I actually some day want to make a real attempt at cosplaying (I’m too busy right now though, and tight on funds too, so, thanks effing refrigerator incident).
I mean the problem with cosplaying my top three favorite fictional characters (which, in order, are still Nagito Komaeda, Vaati, and Flowey) is that Komaeda is too fricking tall and I wouldn’t be able to pull him off convincingly. (Despite being 25, I am literally 4′11″ by the way. I am very short.) Plus I love his DRAE outfit a LOT more than I like his SDR2 one, and well... as rad as his neck-chain is, I’m sure that would get some weird looks in public.
If I were to cosplay someone, I’d want to be able to actually just wear it normally without people necessarily realizing/thinking I’m too weird. I don’t go to conventions, so... just random public shenanigans would be the only time I’d be wearing it. This is one of the main reasons I haven’t really bothered to cosplay before, despite having an interest in it - there’s literally not been much of a practical use beforehand / too expensive for something I can’t actually wear as an outfit.
And then there’s Vaati. Who, coming from The Legend of Zelda franchise, literally looks straight out of a medieval fantasy setting (as he should......), which... again, doesn’t really work well in public lmao. Plus I actually wouldn’t really want to cosplay him; as much as I like him and his design as a character, I don’t think I’d actually want to wear his outfit.
AND THEN there’s Flowey. Who is an actual flower and that would just be literally not possible to cosplay in a way that’s not really weird in public, so again... not very practical.
But this character from NDRV3 has a sort-of normal enough outfit that I could maybe get away with it in public. and also part of the outfit is 100% my aesthetic like holy crap, it’s something I would wear without it even being a part of a cosplay actually. like wow uhm?????
I just wholeheartedly fricking enjoyed / took a liking to / actually legitimately relate to this character and just????? In fact I liked NDRV3 so much I think it’s pretty much second to SDR2 for me in the franchise. (With Danganronpa/Zero being third now, since that was what was previously “second” ranked in DR for me.) I know I’ve got a bunch of games to play but I’m fricking going to replay the entire DR franchise because NDRV3 was just exceptional.
And I know some people hate the ending to NDRV3 but I fricking LOVED it. I won’t say anything, but I actually really just. Loved it wholeheartedly. And I love the developers. Like holy crap I just???? LOVE THIS EFFING FRANCHISE SO MUCH?????? WHY IS DANGANRONPA LITERALLY THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN IN MY LIFE AHHHHHHH. There’s a reason it’s my favorite franchise/storyline of all time. I have so much affection for this series as a whole.
I’m having such a hard time forcing myself not to start spamming spoilers for the game, but I do want to give it some time before I start posting anything about it. (With a few tagged/read more’d exceptions. Anything I post with spoilers WILL be tagged.) HhhHHHhh and there’s also another character in NDRV3 besides my favorite from that game who was a close second and I just????? The character roster was great. There was only one character I actually didn’t like, and I would’ve liked this character except for this one aspect of them that makes me just personally really uncomfortable. I just. NDRV3 WAS SO GREAT AND I’M JUST. SO HAPPY. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE I LOVE THIS FRANCHISE AHHHHHHH.
So right now, my actual current order of top favorite characters from the DR franchise is as follows (and this is in order):
1. Nagito Komaeda (I still haven’t seen a character in which I’ve had AS dramatic a reaction to emotionally... he’s still just. 100% great I love him a lot okay and he’s still my favorite fictional character of all time)
2. THE CHARACTER THAT I HAVEN’T NAMED BUT IF YOU KNOW ABOUT NDRV3 AT ALL IT’S PROBABLY REALLY OBVIOUS SINCE I’VE ALREADY MENTIONED I LIKE FLOWEY A LOT FROM UNDERTALE + I LIKE KOMAEDA FROM DR SO IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT LMAO I’M CRY.
(SPOILERS I’ll give you a hint in case you want to know: what’s better than stealing your life? your heart. ENDSPOILERS)
3. The other character that’s literally a close second to my actual favorite from NDRV3. please help me holy crap this game has wrecked me.
I don’t know how obvious this character is but I’ll give a hint in case anyone wants to try figuring it out: my NDRV3 favorite apparently has a crush on this character....... how did this happen omfg. I don’t really quite ship them though since this one seems a lot more one-sided than something like Komahina??? but I think understanding/respecting that my V3 fave feels that way is worth acknowledging since it has to do with their psychology/thought process-related shenanigans and character development
4. Izuru Kamukura (SORRY BROSKI I didn’t mean to whack you down so far on this list when you used to be second. ;w; I still love you too Kamukura sdjsjhfkh and I feel slightly bad about this but I have been thinking about this really thoroughly and comparing things and when it comes down to it, if I’m being honest I DO like those two NDRV3 characters more)

Spring Break TV Roundup
I have been on spring break this last week and have caught up on some TV Shows. Both continued old problems and had really good finales.
Nexo Knights is still sub-quality to Ninjago, which I recommend more. It would be silly to speculate who on the crew is responsible for each aspect. The Legend of Korra episode commentaries shed a little light on which crew members on the show were responsible for different touches. Regardless, Ninjago has a better result than Nexo Knights, they have a different crew, except for the co-creator of both and Legends of Chima, Tommy Andreasen. The Nexo Knights season finale as big. SPOILERS: (for all of season 3) It left the main character and almost the mentor with a long white beard in limbo between life and death. It wasn’t just that this happened, behind the drama it was to teach a valuable lesson. Lance, Axl, Aaron: half of the main characters aren’t treated with much respect. The Nexo Knights just had too many bad boys to function without Clay or Merlok. The absence of them showed the team, “It’s your world now” and showed to give leaders respect because their jobs are difficult. endSpoilers(); The show treated Aaron more ambitiously, showing his serious side. Season three was my favorite season, as each season gets slightly better. But, it continued to not to treat half the main characters with much respect. The other show also has had this problem and also had a good finale.
When I finished the last episode of season four of Dragons: Race to the Edge I said to myself, “Oh, well- This changes everything!” I meant that both bluntly (it altered how I look at the Dragon’s universe) and sarcastically (it doesn’t change what the show has done in the past). Optimistically speaking, a better quote might be, “You cannot change the past, but you can affect the future.” Wu (Ninjago). Shows in the past that I have liked I have liked the ending, or not liked the ending. If I haven’t liked a show I haven’t liked the ending. Until now. This is new territory for me. It’s like they really screwed around for most of it, buckled down at the last minute and justified their problems convincingly as being part of the master plan. I have such mixed feelings about the ending and still don’t know if I am now a Dragons fan, and maybe this SPOILERS: is intentional. The bronze nor brain of the finale didn’t make it great, the methodology of incorporating the beginning of the show, the tagline (“This changes everything”), and the title (Race to the Edge) is what made it as, the Chinese philosopher, Confucius would phrase it, “benevolent”. From the beginning of Race to the Edge the prospect of finding new islands and Dragons fueled the excitement in a show Netflix described as, “This sow is exciting.” Classic map expanding. The philosophy from the beginning was that new lands are more important than just us and our village. Even in the comedy, “No Macy is most important” said a troubled hero, showing obviously not to be small minded to what you enjoy when there is a whole world out there. The final episode pulled a one-eighty. The Dragons’ Eye was destroyed. Hurray! That thing that was doomed lead to endlessness. And it was destroyed to save a loved one, the reverse of how the show began. Ruffnut was produced more ambitiously, realizing, “There are more important things than Macy.” Hiccup and Astrid became more like Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Snotlout, while these three became slightly more like Hiccup and Astrid. endSpoilers(); Watch for yourself if you are interested and decide if it has “good mojo”. As the down to earth Clancee from Ninjago might put it, “This isn’t beautiful captain.”
Both shows continued old problems and had good finales. I recommend Ninjago and Trollhunters as the best children’s shows currently in run. And add Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and Ronja; the Robber’s Daughter as children’s shows that have finished but are great. Let me know of any other great shows. All but one of these five shows have had episodes released in the last three years. Couple this with the rise in lesser shows’ quality, Nexo Knights and Dragonsverse, we may be entering a golden age of children’s animated television shows.

So this goes off my own personal idea of my Azem being a figure of mercy. I can't articulate this very well but I just really liked the visual concept of it. There are two versions, one without the Azem hands and one with them.
I really wish I had the words to better describe the idea I had in mind when I put this together but the main idea was to 1) push myself in a water piece and 2) incorporate a personal HC that I had for Azem. Zenos just happened to be a character I wanted to draw that that moment so it just kind of combined from there. The flowers are based off of the Royal Menagerie flowers but his outfit is from what he wore later on. Maybe I drew Zenos too soft and coherent to emotions he isn't tuned into in the game but I just think it looks pretty.
