The keys to reforming the electoral law

Ban people from contesting from more than one seat, says EC to govt
Tumblr media
Reviving a nearly two-decade-old proposal, the Election Commission has made a fresh push for amending law to bar people from contesting from more than one seat and has said that if it cannot be done, then a hefty fine should be imposed on those vacating one of the constituencies and forcing a bypoll.
In a recent interaction with the Legislative Secretary in the Law Ministry, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar made this push for the reform first proposed in 2004.
The Legislative Department is the nodal agency in the government to deal with issues related to the EC.
As electoral law stands today, a candidate is permitted to contest an election from two different constituencies in a general election or a group of bye-elections or biennial elections. If a person is elected from more than one seat, then the person can only hold on to one of the seats that he or she won.

absolutely sucks shit when people are like HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST PUTTING ANY CONDITIONS ON YOUR VOTE as if. the constant shift right doesn't have to do with the belief in major parties that they're owed votes by default on account of not being the other guy.
like they're going to ignore the public's wishes either way but fuck, you don't have to make it that easy for them. literally the second they get in. oh pwetty pwease Mr Biden can you wespect basic human wights? don't worry sir you'll still get my vote if not but I thought I'd ask nicely!!!!
hold their fucking feet to the fire dude. make it clear that your vote is conditional on them listening to the public on the clear and vital points.
(btw 'refusing to vote for Clinton is how Trump got in' no it literally is not. please remember that Trump lost the popular vote anyway and only got in because your country has a weird fucked up system where states are allowed to ignore how their constituents vote.)
(Refusing to vote New Labour after the Iraq War is how the Tories got in over here. Kinda. because what actually happened was we had the first hung parliament since 1979, and then the Lib Dems sold the country up the river for some minor concessions. and then Labour spent the next 10 years actively kneecapping itself by painting its own leadership as a bigger threat than the Tories, and when they had a leftist leading them they still brought the Tories to a hung parliament again in 2017.)
(anyway the point is you all seem to have a majorly inflated sense of how much democracy is involved in elections. Ultimately in cases where the race is close-run it is not the electorate that decide, it's like 100 people in positions of high power, be it the electoral college, the party leadership, or otherwise.)
(none of which is to say your vote is useless. your vote is valuable to politicians. there's a limit to how much they can get away with ignoring the public. but. because your vote is valuable, it's only useful as leverage if there's a possibility you might not give them it. and let's be clear, people WILL change direction if they're worried about losing votes. but unless you're offering them massive funding, then the only reason your opinion would carry any weight is if there's a possibility of your vote being withheld. if you stand up and say VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO YOU'VE GOT MY VOTE WHATEVER HAPPENS then like. You might as well just say 'ignore me, pay attention to those guys who might not vote for you'.)
if the centre and the left's votes are vocally assured regardless of the party's policy or stance, then the party will move right. bc they've already got you, so it's time to court the undecideds. YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT NECESSARY TO A POLITICIAN'S SUCCESS TO LISTEN TO WHAT YOU WANT. they don't care. you have to use what little leverage you have, your vote, to make them care. it's the only form of accountability we can bring about that doesn't involve, like, storming the winter palace 🤷‍♀️

The Georgia Republican Party paid at least $220,000 last year to two law firms defending fake presidential electors who could face charges as part of a Fulton County investigation into efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn his 2020 loss.
According to recently filed campaign disclosures, the state party paid Strickland Debrow of Newnan, GA, about $170,000. Atlanta-based Pierson Law LLC, received roughly $52,000 from the Georgia GOP.
The disclosures come as outgoing state party chair David Shafer, one of the 16 phony electors, announced last week that he wouldn't run for another term. In his farewell letter, Shafer revealed that the party paid the elector's legal expenses.
"Thankfully, our State Executive Committee voted to ratify their acts and pay (the elector's) legal expenses," he wrote. "I have raised the money to honor that commitment so that none of them have had to pay a penny out of pocket."
A spokesperson for the Georgia Republican Party didn't respond to questions before publication. Representatives for Strickland Debrow declined to comment for this story. Holly Pierson of Pierson Law told 11Alive that none of the electors "did anything wrong."
"It’s incredibly frustrating that any of the Republican electors were put in the position of having to obtain counsel when it is so abundantly clear legally that none of them did anything wrong," Pierson said. "Recognizing that fact, the Georgia Republican Party voted to step up and protect its membership, which was the principled and courageous thing to do. The Republican electors recused themselves from the vote to ratify their actions and cover their legal expenses, which was otherwise unanimous."
Sixteen Georgians served as phony electors for Trump. They are:
• Shafer •Joseph Brannan •James "Ken" Carroll •Vikki Townsend Consiglio •Carolyn Hall Fisher •Burt Jones •Gloria Kay Godwin •David G. Hanna •Mark W. Hennesy •Mark Amick •John Downey •Cathleen Alston Latham •Daryl Moody •Brad Carver •Shaw Still •C.B. Yadav
The two firms paid by the Georgia GOP represented 11 of the electors — Amick, Brannan, Carver, Consiglio, Downey, Fisher, Godwin, Latham, Shafer, Still and Yadav.
Fulton County prosecutors honed in on the electors as part of their investigation to determine if the former president and his allies violated state law after the 2020 Presidential election. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said in a July 2022 court filing that the electors could face charges.
A Fulton County Superior Court Judge ruled last year that Willis couldn't prosecute Burt Jones, who currently serves as Georgia's Lieutenant Governor, because Willis hosted a fundraiser for Jones' Democratic opponent ahead of the November election. The Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia will determine if Jones should be investigated by a special prosecutor.
Legal experts previously told 11Alive that the electors may face fraud or forgery charges for the documents they submitted to state authorities and the National Archives. The 16 Republicans said that they were the duly elected presidential electors, and they falsely claimed that Trump won the election.
The Fulton County Special Purpose Grand Jury finished its eight-month investigation last month. The panel heard from 75 witnesses. Three portions of the jury's report was released Thursday. Jurors expressed concern that at least one of the witnesses may have lied during testimony. Key sections of the report remain secret.

It shouldn't be "Vote Blue no matter who" which is gross, but "Don't let Red get elected fer chrissakes."
And "Change the Democratic party from the bottom up with grassroots organizing to support leftists and progressives and help them rise through the ranks so they can run successfully for President and other powerful positions while at the same time agitating to engage the public to get involved to make this happen while also working to overthrow Capitalism" though that's not very catchy.
The time to oppose Biden for someone better has long passed. We're stuck with Biden or Trump. And as actually genocidal as Biden is, he is still objectively better than Trump, who will destroy the earth and harm literally everyone, first and especially the most vulnerable. We have no choice at this moment in history but to hold our noses and support Biden.
The strategy of undermining centrist and conservative Democrats on the theory that it will push the party to the left has never worked. It has only elected Republicans and strengthened their power.

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson's Senate campaign has paid over $20,000 to a Wisconsin-based law firm that played a role in former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election in the state, paying the firm for "legal consulting," including efforts for a possible recount, Federal Election Commission records show.
Per FEC records, Johnson's campaign has made two payments to the Wisconsin-based Troupis Law Office -- one payment of $13,287.50 on July 15 for "Legal Consulting," and a subsequent payment for $7,000, dated July 18, for "Recount: Legal Consulting."
The firm, which is owned by Wisconsin attorney Jim Troupis, was previously employed by the Trump campaign for recount efforts during the former President's attempts to overturn the 2020 election and has been the target of recently issued Department of Justice subpoenas probing the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
The Johnson campaign defended its move to retain Troupis' legal services in a statement Monday to CNN.
"As anyone who works on campaigns in this state knows, close elections in Wisconsin are the rule, not the exception," Johnson campaign spokesperson Alexa Henning told CNN. "It would be reckless to be unprepared for any possible circumstance -- and this campaign has been preparing for months for just that."
For his part, Johnson's opponent, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, has retained legal services from prominent Democratic election law attorney Marc Elias, FEC filings show.
In an interview with local conservative radio host Vicki McKenna in June, Johnson said Troupis was responsible for providing his Senate staff with a slate of fake Wisconsin electors on January 6, asking the Wisconsin Republican to deliver the slate to then-Vice President Mike Pence ahead of the congressional session that day to certify Joe Biden's 2020 election win.
"I was originally sent a text at 11:36 by [Jim] Troupis, and it just -- I'm trying to find it real quick -- and it said 'Need to get a document on Wisconsin electors to you and the VP immediately. Is there a staff person I can talk to immediately. Thanks, Jim,'" Johnson told McKenna.
Johnson has drawn fire after the House Select Committee investigating January 6 revealed in June that an aide to the Senator attempted to hand-deliver the false slate of electors to Pence, but was rebuffed by the vice president's staff. Johnson has attempted to downplay his role in the scheme, telling reporters his involvement only lasted "a matter of seconds."
