evangelion 1.11 you are (not) alone
evangelion 1.11 you are (not) alone is a 2009 re-edit of the 2007 evangelion 1.0, which itself is a remake/retelling of the start of the original neon genesis evangelion right up before the introduction of asuka. it is a hard movie to review.
in the most literal sense of the word 1.11 succeeds in retelling the start of evangelion with an added minute of kaworu at the end and a few changes here and there, otherwise it is unremarkable. this is intentional i think, not requiring an encyclopedic knowledge to understand new eva while also being interesting is a hard task and it's clear they opted for the former more than the later. this results in a well made film that just makes me feel hollow. the changes that are there are neat, nerv seems to be going through a rebranding from the original logo to a newer one, and the sea is still red from the third impact, oh and that's it, unless you count cgi as a change.
just like how it's a hard movie to review it's also so so hard to rate, the tone of the review's been negative but it's not like i don't like the film, this is the 2nd time i've seen it and it accomplishes what it sets out to do. i've just seen this script before and i don't know what emotion i'm supposed to be feeling from this bizarrely unflinching remake of 7 anime episodes from the 90s. 7/10
