Not a ship, but I'd love to hear more on how Claudia and Opeli's dynamic works in the snake! Correct me if I'm crazy (I sped through all the chapters and haven't re-read them yet), but I don't think they've had a ton of interaction yet? Or even just less general sisters-in-law headcanons, if you didn't wanna give fic details away!
OH CAKE I WOULD LOVE TO TALK ABOUT OPELI AND CLAUDIA AS SISTERS IN LAW! @raayllum and I were talking about it once the concept of them as sister-in-law threw is both for a loop for a second but nevertheless
I actually have a wip in my drafts about how Claudia finds out. She comes back to the castle and is relegated to the castle gardens to tend to their medicinal plants as per her sentence of service and starts to notice... some things. Soren and Opeli are hanging out a lot when she returns, and even though they're not really doing anything (yet), Claudia is also familiar with Soren's tells and starts to wonder if there's something she should know.
She says nothing though. She tells no one. It's Soren's business and she doesn't think Opeli would appreciate being asked. She'll admit she's a little surprised because historically (according to Claudia), Opeli's never liked them, but things have changed and. Well. Okay.
Meanwhile, Opeli is. Cautious. To be fair, she was a little wary of Soren when his allegiances were still ostensibly to Viren, but she learned quickly enough that he wasn't like his dad At All, especially after he got her, Corvus, Barius, and most importantly, Ezran out of Katolis during Viren's coup in season 1. She can extend that same grace towards Claudia on her return, especially because 1) Ezran vouches for her and insists they give her a chance, and 2) Soren wants to keep his relationship with his sister. She isn't Welcoming exactly, but she is less hostile than certain other people for sure.
So for a little while they don't have a lot to do with each other. Claudia is very quietly keeping tabs on the way her brother behaves around Opeli, but so too is Opeli keeping tabs on Claudia's interactions with Ezran. She doesn't approve per se, but she also can't say anything about it because. Well. You know.
Quick recap from the fruit: Rayla is about 20 weeks pregnant when Claudia comes home and goes into labour in the early morning at the end of that summer. She has a bleed shortly after her baby is born, but it's not one the midwives can control with their standard procedures. Normally, women with bleeds like the one Rayla has die, but Claudia is present and knows exactly what to do. The midwives let her in, Ez fetches the appropriate remedy, Rayla comes out of it fine. By this point, Ez and Claudia are a little more than friends but not formally courting, and after they know Rayla's okay, Soren makes it clear that he isn't just hanging around Opeli for fun. Their physical fling starts shortly afterwards.
No one says anything about anything. Opeli and Soren's thing is supposed to be a secret but Claudia's been onto them for ages, and she Knows what's up the moment Soren appears at breakfast looking a bit more cheery than usual. Opeli is still wary about Claudia hanging around Ezran but won't let herself say anything about it because of the thing with Soren. They're not Friends at all, but there's a sense of respect there, and there's enough of it that they don't pry into each other's business more than they need UNTIL
Opeli misses a bleed and starts throwing up. She essentially breaks up with Soren in her panic but won't go to Claudia who 100% has the herbs that she needs because her brother is the reason Opeli needs them at all. Rayla goes in her stead and tries to be vague about it. Claudia admits she already knows what's going on. She hands over the herbs and keeps her lips tightly sealed.
[insert the rest of the fruit here]
They have a proper talk about it after Opeli is released from the infirmary. Fresh starts, you know? The bottom line is that they want one thing from each other, and that is to keep their boys safe. Claudia swears on her life that she would never hurt Ezran. Opeli swears to LJ that she would never hurt Soren. After that, they are considerably warmer to each other and frequently have tea together with Rayla to get breaks from the dumb ass things the boys get up to.
It's a shame BC the snake starts off with Claudia saying some nasty things to Opeli in light of the situation with Viren but in this timeline, they actually get along fine! Opeli's heard worse and she doesn't hold it against Claudia, and ultimately, she's advocating for Viren—which is something she never thought she'd do, but something that Claudia is ultimately grateful for. I won't spoil the snake, but things get better again for them and altogether, they make p good sisters-in-law.

Honestly, seeing the progression of rayllum never fails to make me smile. I love how it starts off as Rayla wanting to try and finish what she couldn’t do, but when meeting Callum (and later Ezran as well), she puts it all to the side to help them return the egg and stop the war.
Tumblr media
To think, it all started when Rayla tried to complete the mission of assassinating King Harrow and Prince Ezran. Even if she was hesitant and didn’t want to do it, I still love how Callum was willing to put his own life at risk if it meant keeping his little brother safe.
And after they find the egg, then they are on a new quest: a chance to end the war.
Tumblr media
Seeing Callum and Rayla interact throughout season 1 was one of the cutest things ever! It was nice seeing them develop a bond, even though they had their ups and downs such as their confrontation with Amaya or the egg almost dying after it was dropped into an ice lake.
Tumblr media
But the next season, we got even more Callum and Rayla bonding, and even some cute moments shared between them like hugs, hand on shoulder and even the one moment where Rayla nearly confesses to Callum when he’s suffering from the effects of dark magic.
Tumblr media
And then we get to season 3, which is peak rayllum! Honestly, I could go into a whole talk about all the moments they shared, but keeping it brief, I love all their moments shared when Rayla is showing him through Xadia while also focusing on getting Zym back to his mother.
Tumblr media
Even though Rayla discovered she was ghosted, felt like she has failed everyone, and felt cast out when at the Oasis after learning the truth from Ethari- Callum still standing by her and giving her reassurance melted my heart.
Like the scene on the ambler, where he tells Rayla that she’s a hero and goes on about how amazing she is- I literally squealed the first time in saw it! Plus the kiss after- SO CUTE!
Tumblr media
And towards the end, seeing them hold hands and stick together- shows just how much they care about each-other!
But definitely the pinnacle moment had to be Callum activating the Manus Pluma Volantis spell to save Rayla after she tackled Viren off the spire. Just the way he tells her he loves him, and when she says it back- my heart melted and I was grinning wide!
Tumblr media
“Because I love you, Rayla! I really do.”
“I love you too, Callum!”
In the end, seeing how they went from being enemies at first due to Rayla focusing on her mission, to developing a bond as they traveled together, to becoming close and even confessing their love for the other is something that I’ll never forget when watching TDP for the first time (and on subsequent rewatches as well)

does anyone remember when i was tdp on main years ago... probably not... well with s4 around the corner i got an idea to write something that will most certainly not age well and be disproven in a week, please enjoy <3
~
The mission had to be secretive.
Despite all of Ezran's bids for peace and a new friendship with the Dragon Queen, the human nations - and Katolis especially - were still... wary, of the idea of hosting elves. It was hard enough to lobby for the friendlier Earthblood and Skywing elves to come and trade goods, but the thought of hosting Moonshadow elves after the assassinations?
Yeah, it wasn't happening anytime in the foreseeable future.
But this mission was different, personal. It had come only a few months after Callum's birthday, when he had desperately sent off a letter, "d chatted with Soren and with Gren for the rest of the details, had been stupidly hopeful. Despite his naive hope, he hadn't actually expected anything to come out of it; he knows her too well for that, knows her sense of pride would have her avoid everything until it stands directly in front of her, but he had still hoped...
...well, the fruits of his labor now stands in front of him, clearly uncomfortable in the stone of the palace.
"I appreciate your cooperation in this," Callum says as he leads the way to his own chambers. "Most of the people of Katolis are still... hesitant around Moonshadow elves."
"I cannot say I blame them," Ethari says, and his hood drops now that he's indoors. "I must admit, I feel the same, knowing tragedy has befallen us all in this very place."
At the very least, he's... considerate. Callum admittedly hadn't gotten the greatest impression of Rayla's pseudo-father figure in the short time they had met, except that Ethari had humored his bad jokes and had, at the very least, seemed to love Rayla very much- that had to be enough for now.
Even now though, he droops with the heavy weight of grief, and not for the first time, Callum is reminded of all he and Ezran have fought for since the day their lives changed.
"You got my letter, so you know why I've invited you here," he says instead, choosing to ignore the heavier nature of their conversation. "Two of the finest people I know have both testified that the leader of the assassins was kept alive before our previous high mage vanished him, and though I can't tell you exactly what happened to him..."
"...I understand," Ethari promises, and there's a visible slump to his shoulders as they finally reach Callum's room, where he's prepared what he has found. A bow, shining with elven magic, found in Viren's own lab along with the mirror that Callum has hidden away. It could only belong to one; in fact, Callum had seen its owner wielding it only moments before it had been used to fatally end his stepfather's life.
Some part of him, bitter and vindictive, had wanted to destroy the bow in vengeance. Instead, he had polished it and kept it as a reminder that even his enemies have families and lives of their own.
"I'm sorry I couldn't do more for you," he says as Ethari grasps at the bow, holds it like a long-lost friend, close and tight to his own heart. It reminds him of the way King Harrow had cherished everything of his mother's after she died; everything including Callum himself, though he only realizes this in the bittersweet ache of hindsight.
And yet, as he remembers what he had seen in the lair of the Dragon Queen, remembers the fate that he just needs evidence to prove, he keeps quiet. No need for false hope, not yet, not when he doesn't even know if there's a cure.
"What you have done is more than enough, I know what he took from you as well," Ethari says remorsefully, and he finally looks up at Callum once again. "But I know you did not draw me all the way from Xadia just to gift me Runaan's bow. What troubles you?"
Callum hesitates, and then commits. "It's Rayla," he confesses. “She’s been gone for months now, and I… worry. She hasn’t talked to you?”
He doesn’t know what he’s expecting. Somehow, he had hoped that maybe, just maybe, Rayla’s first stop after disappearing had been to drop by the Silvergrove. He doesn’t even know if she’s still Ghosted, and the way Ethari’s face falls seems to confirm what he had been fearing.
“Rayla is… free-spirited,” Ethari says, and his lips curl in the barest form of a smile. “She loves hard, but she also has a sense of… righteousness and duty, the kind of person who’d risk everything on a whim for what she believes is right. She’s done this time and time again, and it seems this time, you were the casualty and not the cause. It’s hard being the one left behind, isn’t it?”
Callum sighs, and his heart aches in his chest as he stares forlorn at the ground. “I just wish I had been enough for her to stay,” he admits, and it comes out wretched, hollow. It’s nothing he hasn’t thought before, but he’s kept them buried, not wanting to put the pressure of his own problems on Ezran or Soren, not this time.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Ethari steps forwards, gently placing a hand on Callum’s shoulder. It draws Callum out of his self-inflicted stupor, and he can’t help but relax at the way Ethari looks at him; it feels strangely comforting. “One day, she will come right back to you as though nothing has changed and preaching about her goals and what she’s accomplished, just as you two did to me. When that day comes, make sure to stop by the Silvergrove again, will you? I’ll ensure that you two receive a safe welcome.”
The implications - that maybe, Ethari will be able to remove Rayla’s ghost status in her town, has Callum breathing a sigh of relief. “Will do,” he grins, and a thought occurs to him. “You know, in some weird way, you’re probably the closest thing I have to a father figure left, too.”
“Ah, is that so?” Ethari chuckles, and he slings the bow across his back, still holding it with gentle hands. “Ah, to be a single father at my age… might as well break my back now.”
Callum laughs, and despite the circumstances, he’s finally feeling… not better, but maybe okay with the situation.
Besides, he thinks as he sees Ethari off again, it probably won’t be too long before I see Rayla again.
Right?

EZRAN APPRECIATION WEEK: Day 1 → Animals
I’ve always been different. It’s hard for me to make friends with other kids. I just feel like I don’t fit in. But with animals? Somehow I have this connection. And a few years ago I realized I could understand what they were saying.

For Ezran Appreciation Week, AU day, I drew 6-year-old Ezran with Zym and Bait from my 90’s grade school AU, In the Middle
I want to do a very bantery third installment of it, where the trio just hang on the couch and watch period-appropriate and very apropos movie, The Land Before Time II (the one with blue baby dinosaur hatching).

Happy Ezran Appreciation Week! Day 1
Animals / Magic (Click for Ao3 Link)
Ezran knows that Opeli doesn’t like it when he disappears into town for the day.
The first time he planned to do it, she caught him at the castle gate with the question, “May I be frank?”
That was code for, “May I yell at you?” He always said yes.
She immediately flew into a long lecture about safety and responsibility and danger and just-because-you’re-a-teenager-now-doesn’t-mean-you-can-just-go-off-and-do-whatever. Nevertheless, he insisted, pulling the I’m-the-king card. She’d finally relented when she realized that he already had Corvus in tow.
He’s pretty sure Corvus doesn’t like it either, but, nevertheless, he gets up early with him once a month, when he is specifically requested, and helps him avoid Opeli’s wrath. Leaving a note on Ezran’s bed, they usually set off right at dawn.
Rayla always praises him for his days spent in town when he returns at dinnertime.
“Ez, you have a good heart,” Rayla repeats to him, ruffling his hair, even though he nearly matches her height now.
He knows she and Callum believe he goes to town in order to talk to his people and see how they live. And, that is partially true. He does want to know what their lives are like.
Which is why he’s really there to listen to the animals.
The animals don’t care that he’s the king. They don’t bow or kneel when he approaches. They don’t tell him everything is fine, when things are decidedly not fine. They don’t hide any pain out of propriety. They’re honest.
And then he knows.
He knows which families barely have enough to eat from their pet cat who goes down the block to a trash can for just a few scraps to supplement its meager meal. (There is always excess at the castle.)
He knows that the young man across the way (maybe only a little older than Ezran himself) with a bird on his shoulder desperately needs a job. (If Soren can’t find something for him, then Opeli certainly can.)
He knows to ask the little girl watching him from her doorway about the pictures she draws while her dog sits up with her at night. (Did you know my brother is an artist, too?)
He knows which houses to send the castle’s doctor to from field mice that scurry away into overgrown gardens. (She’s always happy to make house calls.)
He knows where to send an anonymous note when a little boy loses his dad.
They pause each time to buy lunch from a street vendor. (No, no, I insist. And keep the change.) Corvus doesn’t usually remark on their journey through the streets or on the little scrap of paper Ezran jots notes down on as they eat. One day, though, he says, “You certainly have a way with people, King Ezran.”
“Not really,” the young king shrugs with a slight smile.

143.
Opeli had never really paid Viren's children much mind, in part because they were Viren's children and they can't be all that different from him, and in part because she'd never needed to. Claudia was growing into a lady quite well before all the drama with Azymondias, and Viren's short-lived coup, and the Battle of the Storm Spire (even if her interest in dark magic felt less than savoury), and Soren'd always been destined for the Crown Guard, and she'd never really had much to do with them. In Harrow's day, High Cleric had meant her presence on the council and her duties to the goddesses of the realm. These days, it's a bit more involved than that, if only because she's somehow become a sort-of regent and a sort-of guardian to Ezran, Callum, and, for a little while, their new elven friend, Rayla, which had been something of a shock in an of itself—
But if there was anything more surprising than all of that, it was the shift in Soren's behaviour when they returned from the Storm Spire.
Admittedly, Opeli hadn't known him well before that, but she'd gotten the impression that he was a bit brash, a bit of a bully, even, to Callum and Ezran, which she frowned quietly upon but couldn't do much about because Viren had simply brushed off her concerns. When they came home from the battle, battered but in good spirits, Soren was kinder, wiser, surer of himself but in maturity rather than just in skill.
In the two weeks before the kids left again for the Moon Nexus, Opeli watched him grow rather happily into the role of everyone's older brother. He sparred with Rayla and stole jelly tarts with Ezran and even drew up most of the plans for the surprise party they were going to throw for Callum on his birthday—
But they returned from the Moon Nexus another two weeks after that, somehow even more worse for wear than when they'd come home the first time, and noticeably one person down.
"Rayla left," Soren had told her. "Last night. I don't know what happened. Callum wouldn't say."
His behaviour shifted again after that.
It's been two months since then. Soren uses his downtime to teach Ezran how to play cardgames in the throne room. He brings snacks and, occasionally, drinks (when he thinks she's not looking) to the Office of the High Mage in an effort to drag Callum out of his room every once in a while. He finds Opeli the tea leaves Rayla had picked for her to help keep her awake during late nights and long meetings.
"How kind of you," Opeli says one evening, when he appears at her office door with a pot of tea and a plate of jelly tarts. She offers him a grateful smile and steps back to let him set the tray on her desk.
"It's no big deal," he says, shrugging. "I was on my way up to check on Callum. Thought I'd check in on you too."
"You didn't have to do that," chuckles Opeli, "although I appreciate the sentiment. Thank you."
"You're welcome," he says cheerfully. "Don't stay up too late, yeah?"
"I won't."
He grins and makes a beeline for the door, and Opeli watches, a thought worming it's way forward from the back of her mind.
"Soren," she says.
He pauses, door already halfway closed. "Yeah?"
Opeli purses her lips. "Why?"
"Why not?"
"No. I mean..." Opeli hums and reworks the question. "You were never so kind in your youth," she says after a moment. "Not to the boys, at least—no offense. What's brought all this on?"
Soren's grin falters, just a little. He glances at the ground. "It's that, kind of," he says. "And... I guess I just don't want to lose anyone else."
Of course. Opeli counts them in her head: Lissa. Sarai. Harrow. Viren. Claudia. Now Rayla too. She ducks her head. "Ah," is all she knows to say. "I see. I'm sorry."
"Don't be," he says. "You lost them too."
Opeli snorts ruefully. "Yes," she mutters. "I suppose I did."
