What if Desmond, Ezio, Altair, and Edward time traveled back in time during the Romans?
https://medium.com/the-curiosity/fighting-without-clothes-roman-female-gladiators-5142618e0612
I was wondering if we could add Aquilus to this but since you specified female gladiators and the page did specify that female gladiators were banned around 200 AD/CE, that meant they would have to travel further back in time before Aquilus was born.
(Although… it would definitely be funny if this whole time travel shenanigans meant one of them is the ancestor of Aquilus… I think it would be funny if it’s Desmond but, let’s be real, it’ll probably be the Auditore line with Ezio or Edward)
Now, since they all time traveled together, the main problem would be keeping all of them together. Let’s say they time traveled during the height of their ‘power’ so that would be perhaps around or after AC Bloodlines for Altaïr, Brotherhood timeline for Ezio, during the pirating days of Edward (and before the end of the Golden Days of Piracy) and… of course, the day Desmond dies for Desmond.
In this case, Desmond would get Ezio on his side by just saying he’s Desmond. Altaïr would get roped into them because Ezio knows and respects Altaïr and Desmond knows Altaïr enough to know what words to say to keep him from wandering on his own.
This means that Edward is the wildcard. At this point in his life, he pretty much thinks of the Brotherhood as some kind of cult. If anything, the only reason why he’ll stay with them is because he has no other choice and, at least, this Desmond understands his English. (this is, of course, if we assume that getting time traveled didn’t automatically make them speak the current language in Rome)
This doesn’t help by the fact that he feels annoyance every time Desmond looks at him because at times, he would look at Edward like he’d seen a ghost, other times he would look at Edward and look so sad…
Then…
There were times when Desmond would look around and seem dejected for some reason before glancing at Edward as if to say ‘why you?’
Like Edward had taken the spot of someone more worthy in Desmond’s eyes.
And it is during one of those times that Edward wanders off, trying to find someplace to get drunk.
The others later find him watching female gladiators fighting and they’re all thinking “wait… women were also gladiators???”
For some reason, I can just see Altaïr covering Desmond’s eyes because the women are quite naked then they later find out that Edward had been busy…
Creating a drunken betting pool on who would win.
Unorganized Notes:
Their main objective is to find a way to back to their time period although they do get sidetracked once they learned that there is a Hidden One bureau nearby.
Desmond actually isn’t sure if he should return to his time period because there’s a risk that it would just end up with him finally finishing his death.
Altaïr and Ezio had, on separate occasions, suggested he come with them back to their timeline.
Even Edward had suggested it but he emphasized he was drunk and has no recollection of such an offer (he was lying)
Ezio would definitely be the one to try and create a Brotherhood while they’re there.
Altaïr would be too busy sneaking into places with information and books they might not even need but are interesting nonetheless.
Edward does whatever he wants which ranges from getting drunk to stealing from the rich, sometimes even both at the same time.
Ezio’s growing Brotherhood has a lot of female recruits and allies. He insists it is not because he was charming them. Desmond believes him because he knows Ezio would not stoop that low. Altaïr half-believes him because he trusts Desmond’s judgment but he also knows Desmond trusts Ezio (and him) too much. Edward doesn’t really care either way and just likes to joke about it.

Good question:
Tumblr media
In the United States, many jails and prisons can and will charge you money for every single night that you spend imprisoned, for the entire duration of your incarceration, as if you were being billed for staying at a hotel. Even if you are incarcerated for years. Adding up to tens of thousands of dollars. What happens when you’re released?
In response to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
So.
You’re getting charged, like, ten dollars every time you even submit a request form to possibly be seen by a doctor or dentist.
You’re getting charged maybe five dollars for ten minutes on the phone.
Any time a friend or family tries to send you like five dollars so that you can buy some toothpaste or lotion, or maybe a snack from the commissary since you’re diabetic and the “meals” have left you malnourished, maybe half of that money gets taken as a “service fee” by the corporate contractor that the prison uses to manage your pre-paid debit card. So you’re already losing money every day just by being there.
What happens if you can’t pay?
In some places, after serving just a couple of years for drugs charges, almost 20 years after being released, the state can still hunt you down for over $80,000 that you “owe” as if it were a per-night room-and-board accommodations charge, like this recent highly-publicized case in Connecticut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Excerpt:
Two decades after her release from prison, [TB] feels she is still being punished. When her mother died two years ago, the state of Connecticut put a lien on the Stamford home she and her siblings inherited. It said she owed $83,762 to cover the cost of her 2 1/2 year imprisonment for drug crimes. [...] “I’m about to be homeless,” said [TB], 58, who in March [2022] became the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the state law that charges prisoners $249 a day for the cost of their incarceration. [...] All but two states have so-called “pay-to-stay” laws that make prisoners pay for their time behind bars [...]. Critics say it’s an unfair second penalty that hinders rehabilitation by putting former inmates in debt for life. Efforts have been underway in some places to scale back or eliminate such policies. Two states — Illinois and New Hampshire — have repealed their laws since 2019. [...] Pay-to-stay laws were put into place in many areas during the tough-on-crime era of the 1980s and ’90s, said Brittany Friedman, an assistant professor of sociology at University of Southern California who is leading a study of the practice. [...] Connecticut used to collect prison debt by attaching an automatic lien to every inmate, claiming half of any financial windfall they might receive for up to 20 years after they are released from prison [...].

Look at this:
To help her son, Cindy started depositing between $50 to $100 a week into Matthew’s account, money he could use to buy food from the prison commissary, such as packaged ramen noodles, cookies, or peanut butter and jelly to make sandwiches. Cindy said sending that money wasn’t necessarily an expense she could afford. “No one can,” she said. So far in the past month, she estimates she sent Matthew close to $300. But in reality, he only received half of that amount. The balance goes straight to the prison to pay off the $1,000 in “rent” that the prison charged Matthew for his prior incarceration. [...] A PA Post examination of six county budgets (Crawford, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lehigh, Venango and Indiana) showed that those counties’ prisons have collected more than $15 million from inmates — almost half is for daily room and board fees that are meant to cover at least a portion of the costs with housing and food. Prisoners who don’t work are still expected to pay. If they don’t, their bills are sent to collections agencies, which can report the debts to credit bureaus. [...] Between 2014 and 2017, the Indiana County Prison — which has an average inmate population of 87 people — collected nearly $3 million from its prisoners. In the past five years, Lebanon’s jail collected just over $2 million in housing and processing fees.

Pay-to-stay, the practice of charging people to pay for their own jail or prison confinement, is being enforced unfairly by using criminal, civil and administrative law, according to a new Rutgers University-New Brunswick led study. The study [...] finds that charging pay-to-stay fees is triggered by criminal justice contact but possible due to the co-opting of civil and administrative institutions, like social service agencies and state treasuries that oversee benefits, which are outside the realm of criminal justice. “A person can be charged $20 to $80 a day for their incarceration,” said author Brittany Friedman, an assistant professor of sociology and a faculty affiliate of Rutgers' criminal justice program. “That per diem rate can lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees when a person gets out of prison. To recoup fees, states use civil means such as lawsuits and wage garnishment against currently and formerly incarcerated people, and regularly use administrative means such as seizing employment pensions, tax refunds and public benefits to satisfy the debt.” [...] Civil penalties are enacted on family members if the defendant cannot pay and in states such as Florida, Nevada and Idaho can occur even after the original defendant is deceased. [...]
Text by: Megan Schumann. “States Unfairly Burdening Incarcerated People With “Pay-to-Stay” Fees.” Rutgers press release. 20 November 2020.
---
So, to pay for your own imprisonment, states can:
-- hunt you down for decades (track you down 20 years later, charge you tens of thousands of dollars, and take your house away)
-- put a lien on your vehicle, house
-- garnish your paycheck/wages
-- seize your tax refund
-- send collections agencies after you
-- take your public assistance benefits
-- sue you in civil court
-- take money from your family even after you’re dead

How can you claim to be anticapitalist and then make your sona a literal business woman.
anon, there would still be a great deal of infrastructure and projects in need of management post-capitalism. do you know how many people there are in, like, one single city?
there would also still be associations, and bureaus, and committees, and clubs, and schools, and many many more things that would still need people to help manage them. that's what "Society" is. and that management would still likely come in the form of paperwork and correspondence and database maintenance and public relations, which are all things i currently do at my job. ya know, as a Business Woman.
even if there was no more money, there would still be Women who take care of Business, and it is not inherently pro-capitalist for me to enjoy presenting myself as such.

For all the concern in recent years that U.S. democracy is on the brink, in danger or under threat, a report out Tuesday offers a glimmer of good news for American voters worried that casting a ballot will be difficult in 2024.
Put simply, the new data shows that voting in America has gotten easier over the past two decades. More voters have the ability to cast a ballot before Election Day, with the majority of U.S. states now offering some form of early in-person voting and mail voting to all voters.
"Although we often talk in a partisan context about voter fraud and voter suppression and whether voters have access to the ballot, the reality is, over the past 25 years, we've greatly increased the convenience of voting for almost all Americans," said David Becker, the founder and executive director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR), which authored the new report...
The data shows that, despite real efforts by some Republican-led legislatures to restrict access at the margins, the trend in the U.S. since 2000 has been toward making it easier to vote: Nearly 97% of voting-age American citizens now live in states that offer the option to vote before Election Day.
"The lies about early voting, the lies about voting machines and efforts in some state legislatures to roll back some of the election integrity and convenience measures that have evolved over the last several decades, those efforts almost all failed," Becker said. "In almost every single state, voters can choose to vote when they want to."
Forty-six states and Washington, D.C., offer some form of early in-person voting, the report tallied, and 37 of those jurisdictions also offer mail voting to all voters without requiring an excuse...
In 2000
Tumblr media
In 2024
Tumblr media
Infographic via NPR. If you go to the article, you can watch an animation of this map that shows voting availability in every election since 2000.
There are some political trends that show up in the data. Of the 14 states that don't offer mail voting to all voters, for instance, 12 have Republican-led legislatures.
-via NPR, March 19, 2024. Article continues below.
But maybe the more striking trends are geographic. Every single state in the western U.S. has offered some form of early and mail voting to all voters since 2004, according to the data. And those states span the political spectrum, from conservative Idaho to liberal California.
"It's really hard to talk about partisanship around this issue because historically there just hasn't been much," Mann said. "We've seen voting by mail and early in-person voting supported by Republican legislatures, Democratic legislatures, Republican governors, Democratic governors. We see voters in both parties use both methods." ...
In 2020, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts all made changes to make voting more easily accessible, which have since partially or fully become permanent. Delaware is currently embroiled in a legal fight over whether it can implement early and mail voting changes this election cycle as well.
The South, with its history of slavery and Jim Crow laws, has long lagged behind when it comes to voting access. The CEIR data shows that, although some states have slowly started expanding options for voters, generally it is still the most difficult region for voters to cast a ballot.
As options nationwide have become more widely available, voters have also responded by taking advantage.
In the 2000 election, 86% of voters voted at a polling place on Election Day, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
In 2020, during the pandemic, that number dropped to less than 31% of voters. It went back up in 2022, to roughly half of the electorate, but was still in line with the two-decade trend toward more ballots being cast early.
...in reality, Becker says, more voting options actually make elections more secure and less susceptible to malicious activity or even human error.
"If there were a problem, if there were a cyber event, if there were a malfunction, if there were bad weather, if there were traffic, if there were was a power outage, you could think of all kinds of circumstances. ... The more you spread voting out over a series of days and over multiple modes, the less likely it's going to impact voters," he said...
