In Israel, we're slowly seeing the country emerge from one of the darkest times since the Holocaust. Evacuees are returning to their homes in the South as the threat from terrorists in Gaza is being eliminated. The transformation from darkness to light is reflected in much of last week's news. The dark days of displaced Israeli families have been made a little brighter thanks to donations and kind hosts. A wounded Fauda TV star has been able to see the light of day after being discharged from hospital.  A Hamas terrorist emerging from a dark tunnel shaft with a bomb was seen just in time. And from the dark despair after seeing Hamas murder his wife, a brave, stateless Bedouin and his nine children can have a brighter future as permanent residents of Israel. The usual weekly Israeli medical breakthroughs give brighter prospects for ALS and PTSD sufferers, heart patients, and pregnant mothers in Brazil. The winter sun is shining on Israeli agricultural innovations with climate-resistant seeds, plant propagation breakthroughs, and sun-dried tomatoes on the vine. Meanwhile, Israeli technology is revolutionizing the taking of photos in poor light. Finally, Israel celebrated some shining sporting results; a 2,000-year-old unique stone box, found near the ruins of the Temple in Jerusalem, is now seeing the light of day; and an Israeli fashion designer played the Israeli National anthem Hatikvah in New York, to accompany the showing of his Autumn collection, aptly entitled "Illumination of Hope".  Let's hope that the rest of the world also "sees the light". The photo (TY Sharon) is of an illuminated Jerusalem street during the Shaon Horef (Winter Noise) festival.

Epic hit: In January, after Russell Crowe revealed he would not be appearing in the sequel, he revealed on a podcast that the storyline takes place some 30 years after the original film; Both Crowe and his co-star Joaquin Phoenix were praised for their performances in the hit 2000 film, which also included a Best Actor Oscar for CroweEarlier this year, Russell Crowe confirmed he wouldn't be appearing in the long-awaited Gladiator sequel, but offered a few plot pointers after chatting with Scott over dinner.Although he didn't reveal much, during an appearance on the series he revealed that the story revolves around Mescal's character, Lucius Fitzy and Wippa Podcast."If you remember, there was a little boy who wanted to defeat the gladiator, which leads to the 'My name is' speech," he said of the original film, adding, "So this little boy grew up, and that he is also now.' the Emperor.' He then summed things up by declaring: “So it's not a remake. And it's not a direct sequel. It's not like the day after, you know, 30 years later or something. And then the situation arises, you know? So far, there's no official word on when filming for the Gladiator sequel will begin. Read the full article

Iran attack draws dark humor from captive Israeli audience
Tumblr media
There’s nothing like a dose of existential dread to turn the People of the Book into the People of the Meme. And with millions of Israelis doomscrolling social media from their safe rooms, the jokesters took full advantage of their captive audiences.
Days before the barrage of some 300 or so projectiles were fired by Iran at Israel overnight Saturday, Israelis stocked up on some humor alongside their canned hummus beans and six-packs of water.
Tumblr media
Another said he was less concerned about the imminent attack from Iran, but would like to pitch Sarah Silverman to play his character in the resulting Netflix movie.
Dry Israeli-British humor played well, including a quip from journalist Matthew Kalman who said, “First direct flights from Iran to Israel since 1979.”

Not to be outdone, executive director of StandWithUs Israel Michael Dickson said what many wide-awake Jewish Israelis were thinking, “Well, if we’re going to be up all night, we might as well do the Seder already,” referring to the ritual meal launching the week of Passover next Monday night.
Journalist Matthew Kalman on Facebook: ‘First direct flights from Iran to Israel since 1979.
The memes cranked up once word was out that dozens of car-sized drones had been launched from Iran and were rather slowly making their way to Israel.
A massively shared image charted the unmanned aerial vehicles’ progress to major Israeli cities, giving their expected arrival times in a format used for announcements of the entrance of Shabbat.
Another showed a dial — a la food delivery app Wolt — of the missiles’ estimated time of arrival.
Estimated time of arrival of Iranian projectiles – 540 minutes – from the food delivery app Wolt
Many pranksters took screen grabs from major Israeli news networks and “improved” them with new captions.
One showed the three forms of projectiles shot from Iran to Israel alongside their flight times — and advised which form of food one should make during their journeys: Ballistic missiles take 12 minutes (sandwich), cruise missiles can take two hours (matbucha, a cooked Middle Eastern tomato/pepper salad) and drones should arrive in up to nine hours (cholent).
A parody of a Talmudic discussion from the Passover Hagaddah, saying, ‘It happened once [on Pesach] that Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon were reclining in Bnei Brak and were waiting for the unmanned armed vehicles that whole night…’ (courtesy)
On X, communications guru Sara Eisen came up with a slew of pithy inspired limericks to pass the time, including this biblically inspired gem: “Haman of old was a Persian / These days there’s a ballistic version / That takes all the old hate / Which it hurls towards a state / It’s the same strange obsessive perversion.”
A limerick from marketing and communications guru Sara Eisen on X. (courtesy)
Parody of ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ (courtesy)
For many working Israeli parents already at a loss for how to occupy their school-aged children during the Passover break, the news that the daycare system would be shuttered Sunday brought a new onslaught of black humor.
As one parent put it, “In the meantime in the daycare’s Whatsapp group: ‘If the drones are meant to arrive by 4:00 a.m., what reason is there to not open the daycare as usual?!'”
Other parents made “kosher for Passover” parody sequel posters of favorite childhood movies, including “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs — Iran-style.”
Finally, showing appreciation for a heralded hero of the war against Hamas (remember that?), a much-shared image of IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari was captioned with, “We’re all going to die — except for [“Fauda” star and singer] Idan Amedi.”

Jews of Iraqi descent fight on two fronts
Two Israeli  Jews of Iraqi descent have been hitting the headlines: Idan Amedi, who is of Kurdish origin, made his name in Israel as a singer and actor in the Netflix series ‘Fauda’.  He fought on the front line in Gaza until he was severely injured . Eylon Levy, who was brought up in England by Israeli parents with roots in Iraq, has been an Israel government spokesman fighting a different war on the diplomatic front. He was recently the star speaker at a 25,000-strong rally in Trafalgar Square in London.
CNN reports:
Tumblr media
Idan Amedi, 35, is in critical condition in the ICU at Sheba Tel Hashomer Medical Center near Tel Aviv, a spokesperson for the hospital said.
However, the star’s father told Israeli website Walla!: “There is no danger to his life.”
Amedi, who is of Kurdish descent, shot to fame in the 2010s as a singer-songwriter before joining the cast of “Fauda” in 2017. He plays a member of an Israeli special forces unit in the series, which follows an Israeli agent who comes out of retirement to hunt for a Palestinian fighter he thought he’d killed, according to the show’s official Netflix page.
Amedi had volunteered to fight for the Israeli military in Gaza following Hamas’ October 7 attacks on Israel, according to “Fauda” co-creators Lior Raz and Avi Issacharaoff.

The Jerusalem Post reports:
Tumblr media
The star draw was British-Israeli Eylon Levy, the government’s English language spokesman. The 33-year-old former television anchor, who was educated at both Oxford and Cambridge, has become a popular character – and has even attained heart-throb status – for his articulate defense of Israel on television. Even his eyebrows – which appear to take on a life of their own during hostile questioning – have attained cult status and have their own social media accounts. He won a rock star welcome.
“One-hundred days after October 7, one day after another hate parade in London we stand here outnumbered and out-manned yet unafraid and united,” he said. “We are holding our heads up high and are determined to climb out of our darkest hour with our love for each other and Israel.”

LARSEN IN THE GARDEN OF THE BEASTS 20.2.2024
I feel slightly more normal today as,  at bottles, I told the story of my hearing aid....which I am going to order a new one today. One friend who helps me in the morning with the bottles. She said her son had been lying on the sofa when the cat jumped on top of him. His glasses went flying and they never found them again evn after he moved and completely emptied the house. Another friend said how, after a visitor had left, she found a bracelet which turned out to be that of the visitor and was not only valuable, but a keepsake. She put it away in a safe place.......and never found it again.
I am going for an eeg this week. Irit is going with me. I don't know why but they demand that I bring someone with me. After that I have decided I will go to my doctor again about not being able to eat.....it is not only not wanting to eat but even food I used to really enjoy is like dust in my mouth. Not that I think he can help me but I will do tests again. I just took the last Corona test. Sometimes I wonder if it is not a delayed reaction from the Corona I had about two months ago but hard to believe.
I went out to supper with friends.....all we could talk about was the war. Yesterday I went to see "One life" about Sir Nicholas Winton wbo brought nearly 700 children from Germany in the Second World Wars and for years no one knew anything about him. It is a very uplifting film about a man who in the end saves 1000s of Jews and in all modesty. And only in the last years of  his life was this brought out because of a scrap book that he had kept of those terrible days. But both I and a friend of mine sat there and thought of the children of Gaza whom no one can help .Just as so many thousands of Jewish children who died with no one to help them. And yet so many of my friends who helped Palestinians were so disappointed that they got no expression of pain because of what happened at the beginning of the war. But this also is part of it .And we forget what they have gone through all the years of the occupation.
Not the best of books to listen to at this time and place but plenty of reasons to think and compare. It could be written about Israel today and I can only pray, not about Israel in the future. Netanyahu...what can I say. His rise to power was by democratic means but what is  happening now is far from democratic. The way the police are trying to stop the demonstrations, the  attacks on , not only Arabs but Jews, who do not agree with the government and who demonstrate for its downfall, who show sympathy for Gaza....look at what is happening to Arab society. Read about Lucy Harish whom " Education Ministry Withdraws Funding ofJewish Event Over Arab Israeli Host..."      A woman who represents mixed marriage cannot represent Jewish culture' said the ministry about journalist and host Lucy Aharish, who is married toJewish Fauda star Tsahi Halevi; the Israeli council that hosts the annual event to 'promote a pluralistic, progressive and free Judaism' demands the ministry to retract its decision.  Nuremberg Israeli style. Just the first three PDFs should give you the idea. Surveillance there is
more and more of that, as you can also see here.
By the way when you read the book you see how much anti-Semitism there was in the American government at the mind. And this is also what Netanyahu has caused to happen to Jews in the diaspora......only now the anti-Semitism that was so open then and has been latent in the last years, had been given the opening to express itself openly.
I travel on the bus and train and see the young soldiers and it pains me as I wonder how many will be alive at the end of the period which Netanyahu keeps telling us we will have to fight, which seems without end. Every morning when I wake up to hear that another soldier has been killed I think of Billy the Kid who put another notch on his rifle  for each man he killed. I wonder how many notches there have to be in Netanyahu's chair before it will collapse. But horribly it seems that two of the worst leaders we have, he and Trump, will be re-elected.
As for not allowing the Palestinians in the occupied areas to work in Israel......the government wants to bring in foreign workers. The  |Palestinians  are in ghettos. They cannot get out to work and yet, only today, 10s of illegal workers have been found in Israel. CYNTHIA, read what I sent in answer to your question about israeli don't be surprised. How long do they think they can leave people to starve and die of thirst and be attacked daily by the settlers? No one could be surprised at the attack in Ra'anana. So the PDF don't be surprised is so true. Many Arab Israelis know that the truth but they do not only watch El Jazeera. But then, who are we to speak when so few Israelis have any idea of what is happening on the West Bank or care. People ask, will the Palestnians eventually just erupt. How can I when in the atmosphere of today I can imagine them simply being shot at as they come out of their villages.  As it is. They are so threatened by the settlers that they hardly dare to leave their houses. We get continual requests for help, for food. One does not know where to turn.  Villages have become ghettos.
For most Palestinians, October 7’s savagery is literally unbelievable. Blame the TV news?
Al Jazeera and others largely ignored Hamas atrocities, bolstering distrust of Israeli accounts; one poll found 97% in West Bank deny the monstrous acts committed against civilians
This is a story which I doubt will be published overseas
Father of fallen soldier: Terrorist decapitated my son, tried to sell head for $10,000
And the government, besides not making real efforts to bring them back also is not giving the support it should, delays giving them financial support.    So hard to believe.
