#Fel d1

Do you feed your cat a food that helps with human allergies? Did you know you have chickens to thank?
While i was on facebook today I came across some studies posted by The Association of Avain Veterinarians (AAV) about how exposing chickens to Fel d1, which is one of the most common causes of cat related allergies in humans, has them produce eggs that carried antibodies of that allergen in their yolks. When those yolks were then fed back to the cats the cats experienced a reduction in that allergen. This is lovely news for cat lovers with cat related allergies. I posted one of the studies below as its pretty interesting. Also shout out to the cat who was removed from the study for being fractious lol
Also specifically we have lab strain Leghorn chickens to thank as it seems like its usually leghorns who are used for these things, which makes sense since they are very productive layers and very genetically similar. Blue and Greenie distant relatives lol (Blue bird below for people who dont know what a leghorn is)

Reduction of active Fel d1 from cats using an antiFel d1 egg IgY antibody
Background
Fel d1 is the most important allergen from cats. Fel d1 is produced primarily in saliva and spread to the haircoat during grooming and then transferred to the environment via hair and dander.
Objectives
A novel approach to reducing allergenic Fel d1 exposure was evaluated, involving binding the Fel d1 with an anti-Fel d1 polyclonal egg IgY antibody. The hypothesis was that hair from cats who had been fed foods containing anti-Fel d1 IgY would show a significant reduction in active Fel d1 (aFel d1).
Methods
Hair collected from 105 cats completing a 12-week study was evaluated for aFel d1 via ELISA. Hair was collected four times over a 2-week baseline period, then weekly during the 10 week treatment period during which cats consumed a food containing the anti-Fel d1 IgY.
Results
Baseline aFel d1 (μg/g hair) varied greatly among the cats in this study. From week 3, there was a significant reduction in mean aFel d1 with an overall average decrease of 47% by week 10, ranging from a 33–71% decrease vs baseline. Cats with the highest baseline aFel d1 showed the greatest decrease in aFel d1.
Conclusions & Clinical Implications
Feeding anti-Fel d1 IgY to cats successfully reduced Fel d1 on their haircoat with the greatest decreases observed in cats with initially high levels. Feeding a diet with anti Fel d1 IgY significantly reduced the active Fel d1 on the hair of cats.

What is Cat Dander? Is Fel D1 capable of affecting humans?
Some people are still confused about cat dander, but allergy sufferers are worried about it. The details of what exactly qualifies as cat dander, the significance of Fel D1, and the effects on allergy sufferers are provided below.
For a long time, many people believed that allergies originated from cat hair. Cat dander eventually emerged as the culprit, although most cat lovers thought it was exactly the same as obvious dandruff. Read More...

I love cats so much, and I hate that I am so allergic to them that I have literally had to be rushed to the hospital multiple times for anaphylaxis from being near them. The fel d1 protein is in their skin, their dander, their saliva, and their waste, and it can remain on even HARD surfaces for up to two years before breaking down.
So like, between that and my dust and mold allergies, anything from a used book/music store is off limits to me because so many of them have cats, or the previous owner of a book or record may have had a cat, and I just can't risk it. With used furniture I have to scrub down any hard surfaces and steam clean/shampoo with special shampoo any upholstered surfaces.
The one known safe type of cat for me is a spayed Siberian female, because that is the ONE cat that produces pretty much zero fel d1. Some Russian blues may or may not be semi-safe with antihistamines.
There are much bigger problems in the world, but I am taking a moment to be sad about being banned from cats.

Wait, Station Management and City Council have adopted several cats together? Wasn't it previously established that Station Management was severely allergic to cats? Did they get a shot? Are they feeding the cats that Purina Fel D1 IgY food? Are all of the cats Siberian? Or Sphynx? Did Finkor just forget? So many questions.

I've been looking up which cat breeds exactly are less allergenic and im really experiencing the full misery of search engine rot. I searched for the main cat allergen by name and almost every result I get is still the same identical but slightly reworded bullshit article that mentions Fel D1 levels for two long haired breeds then forgets about that entirely to wander off sideways into low shedding breeds and sphynxes. I just!!! want a list!!! of which breeds might have lower levels!!
interestingly enough i did discover that apparently lighter colours and female cats might have lower allergen levels. still havent answered my initial question tho ...

Krzysztof Drabikowski’s Батюшка European Fall 2023 Tour // Kanonenfiber, Uburen // 2023. 11. 24. Analog Music Hall - https://metalindex.hu/2023/10/24/krzysztof-drabikowskis-%d0%b1%d0%b0%d1%82%d1%8e%d1%88%d0%ba%d0%b0-european-fall-2023-tour-kanonenfiber-uburen-2023-11-24-analog-music-hall/ -
November végén hazánkba látogat a Batushka “másik” fele, a Krzysztof Drabikowski vezette Батюшка.

Cat Science News!
We have figured out how to make cats generate less fel d1, which is the protein that causes allergic reactions in humans.
The process requires feeding them cat food supplemented with an antibody, made from chicken eggs, for the protein in question. The cat eats the food and the antibody binds to the protein, which is normally found in their saliva. This renders the protein inactive and unable to effect humans.
The result is an on average 47% reduction in the allergen after three weeks of daily feeding of the special food.
The purpose of fel d1 in cats isn't super well understood but the idea is it may be useful as an allergen and in scent communication, it does not appear to be critical for it though. So cats aren't harmed by us messing around with it.
This is super cool!

siberian cat breed Personality, Price, Adoption, And Special Info.
The Siberian Cat is a centuries-old land of domestic cats in Russia and has recently developed into a formal breed with standards promulgated around the world since the late 1980s.
Siberians vary in size from medium to medium-large. The formal name of the breed is Siberian Forest Cat, but it is more commonly referred to as Siberian or Siberian Cat. Another formal breed name is the Moscow Semi-Longhair (Moscow cat breed).
The cat is an ancient breed that is now believed to be the ancestor of all modern long-haired cats.
The cat has similarities with the Norwegian forest cat, to which it is probably closely related. It is a natural breed of Siberia and the national cat of Russia. Although it began as a landrace, it is today selectively bred and pedigree in at least seven major cats fancier and breeder organizations.
The color print version of the breed is called the Neva Masquerade by some registries, including the Fédération Internationale Feline.
The Siberian produces less Fel d1 than other cat breeds and, while it certainly isn't a whole lot, it is often said to be hypoallergenic.
A research study of Siberian cats native to the region of Russia confirmed that subjects produced less Fel d 1 than non-Siberian cats.
Breed Overview & Siberian cat life expectancy
History
The Siberian cat was first mentioned in an 1892 book by Harrison Weir, who organized and wrote some of the earliest cat shows in England.
A Siberian cat is shown to me by Mr. Castang of Leadenhall Market; The breed is completely new to me. It is a small gray-blue female cat, quite short in body and legs; The head is smaller and more rounded, while the ears are medium size.
the iris of the eyes is a dark golden color, which, in contrast to the blue color of the fur, makes them even more voluminous; The tail is short and thick, very high at the base, and abruptly pointed at the tip.
It is particularly timid and wild in its nature, and it is difficult to get near; But, as Mr. Castang observed, this cowardice is "because it does not understand our language and does not know when it is spoken or spoken." I think it would make a valuable cat cross with some of the English varieties. -  Harrison Wear, Our Cats and All About Them, 1892 ed.
Siberians first arrived in the United States in 1990. Although increasing in popularity, the expense of im

Started wheezing the other day, and it reached a peak when I was reading to El last night--I was seriously considering another trip to the ER. That's when we realized the second-hand book @thesurestthing bought for El the other day came from a house with cats. (If you know me, you know I have an anaphylactic reaction to the Fel D1 protein inherent in most cat saliva, dander, etc.)
So... cue us tossing the book (when El wasn't looking), Zoey desperately bagging up everything the book might have come into contact with over the past couple of days (bedding, stuffies, some clothing, etc.) to pack up and spend money we couldn't afford to hit an all-night laundromat, and wiping down any hard surfaces it might have come in contact with (because Fel D1 can persist for up to two years on hard surfaces).
I've been having to use my nebuilizer last night and today (which I hate because it makes me shaky for hours afterwards), take even more antihistamines than usual (I'm basically allergic to the world), and my doc sent us an emergency scrip for a rescue inhaler last night to supplement my other inhaler. But I'm still going to be wheezing and coughing and short of breath for the next couple of days.
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS IT'S NOT COVID AGAIN, which is what I was afraid of.
