Do you feed your cat a food that helps with human allergies? Did you know you have chickens to thank?

While i was on facebook today I came across some studies posted by The Association of Avain Veterinarians (AAV) about how exposing chickens to Fel d1, which is one of the most common causes of cat related allergies in humans, has them produce eggs that carried antibodies of that allergen in their yolks. When those yolks were then fed back to the cats the cats experienced a reduction in that allergen. This is lovely news for cat lovers with cat related allergies. I posted one of the studies below as its pretty interesting. Also shout out to the cat who was removed from the study for being fractious lol

Also specifically we have lab strain Leghorn chickens to thank as it seems like its usually leghorns who are used for these things, which makes sense since they are very productive layers and very genetically similar. Blue and Greenie distant relatives lol (Blue bird below for people who dont know what a leghorn is)

Reduction of active Fel d1 from cats using an antiFel d1 egg IgY antibody

Background

Fel d1 is the most important allergen from cats. Fel d1 is produced primarily in saliva and spread to the haircoat during grooming and then transferred to the environment via hair and dander.

Objectives

A novel approach to reducing allergenic Fel d1 exposure was evaluated, involving binding the Fel d1 with an anti-Fel d1 polyclonal egg IgY antibody. The hypothesis was that hair from cats who had been fed foods containing anti-Fel d1 IgY would show a significant reduction in active Fel d1 (aFel d1).

Methods

Hair collected from 105 cats completing a 12-week study was evaluated for aFel d1 via ELISA. Hair was collected four times over a 2-week baseline period, then weekly during the 10 week treatment period during which cats consumed a food containing the anti-Fel d1 IgY.

Results

Baseline aFel d1 (μg/g hair) varied greatly among the cats in this study. From week 3, there was a significant reduction in mean aFel d1 with an overall average decrease of 47% by week 10, ranging from a 33–71% decrease vs baseline. Cats with the highest baseline aFel d1 showed the greatest decrease in aFel d1.

Conclusions & Clinical Implications

Feeding anti-Fel d1 IgY to cats successfully reduced Fel d1 on their haircoat with the greatest decreases observed in cats with initially high levels. Feeding a diet with anti Fel d1 IgY significantly reduced the active Fel d1 on the hair of cats.

"Mmm…" I breathed as I stroked their hair.

They gave me a teasing smile as their nostrils quickly flared.

"Oh don’t do that…" I murmured as I nuzzled my face into their neck.

"CHOO! Do what?" they asked with the cutest giggle you’ll ever hear.

"Tease me by trying to hold back…" my voice was muffled against their ear. "…You’re so hot baby…"

"I’m ah-Pff’CHOO! CHOO! Ugh. Look at me. I’m a mess…"

"No, you’re gorgeous…your laugh, your smile, your adorably pink nose…" I paused as they sneezed a quick double, "…and your sneezes, those drive me crazy…you know that…"

"You should have been there tonight…ahh-PFF‘CHOO!"

"Ohh…" I practically moaned.

"That’s what it was all…CHOOCHOO!…the entire time…who needs three cats…Uhh…CHOO!"

"Bless you honey…"

"Mmphx…I’m glad you’re enjoying this…"

I smiled and ran my fingers through my hair. "I really am…if you’re not suffering…"

They paused, their eyes shut tight with a mouth that was hanging open. They were breathing heavier than before.

As I watched they sucked their breath in, and a tear ran from the corner of their eye.

"AHH-PFF’CHOO! Het’CHIEW! CHIEW! Ohh……! CHHG’CHOO! CHOO! I’m tired of this now…"

I ran my hand over their hair.

"Why don’t you take a shower and go to bed babe," I said softly. They nodded, and then kissed me before letting three hard sneezes out into my collarbone. "Oof…"

They stood, sneezing once more.

"Are you going to join me?"

"I thought you’d never ask," I grinned. "Oh and baby?"

"Ah-pff’CHOO! Yeah my love?"

"Bless you."

Cat Allergies; Tom Holland x Reader

Being friends with Tom these past couple of years have been the best of your life. You practically knew each other more than you know yourselves. But today you learned something new. Since he had never been to your house, you offered that day because he was curious about your living arrangements. And he knew you had cats. Many cats. But he had never mentioned he was allergic to them until you had asked.

“You want to know what my living situation is? Why?” You asked, grinning.

“Just curious.” He replied, shrugging his shoulders.

“Well then, just come to my house. Boom. That's simple, Tom.”

“Don’t you have cat’s, though?”

“Yes…? You knew that already. Why?”

“I’m allergic.”

“What? Since when?”

Once he told you that, you stopped hugging him as often, worried that the cat hair on your clothes could trigger a reaction. But he told you that it wasn’t a serious allergy, and that all that would happen if he messed with cats was simply just a sniffy nose and a small rash. He assured you that he could go to your house safely.

“Ok, are you ready? Because I have a lot of cats, Tom.” You said, unlocking the door.

“Yes, y/n. I’m ready.” He huffed, pretending to be hurt. You were speaking to him like a child.

“Come into the oasis!” You said dramatically, tossing your keys on the counter.

Before you knew it, all 8 of your cats surrounded you and Tom, causing you to look at him in a panicked manner. But instead of seeing him panic, he smiled gently, walking passed your cats with ease.

“You can still breathe, right?” You asked, genuinely worried, making him turn to you with a smile.

“Yes, y/n. Don’t worry. Who’s these guys?” He asked, pointing towards your two kinkalow cats.

“Oh, they are kinkalow cats. Brothers, actually. If you want to get technical, twins. That one-” you point, “His name is Boris, and that one-” you point to the other, “his name is Sable.”

“Oh, cool. How about that one?”

“Oh! She’s my oriental short-haired cat. Her name is Rosemary.”

“That one?”

“Exotic shorthair. Her name is Aspen.”

“Him?”

“Scottish fold. Haven.”

“Where are the other three?” Tom asked, looking around.

“One is an outdoor cat, because she hates being inside. But she’s not friendly so let’s just say it’s a good thing she’s not here. Yeah?” Tom nods. “I can show you my last two. Their brother and sister. Normal cats. I honestly don’t know the breed.” You said, leading him towards your room.

There is a specific, red scratching post that those two practically own. They are there constantly, and never leave unless it’s time to feed. Tom noticed when walking into your room, it was incredibly small. A twin sized bed, and one small dresser besides the cat post. He saw the front of your apartment was also fairly small in size, and wondered how you could live with so many animals.

Without saying anything, you let Tom walk around the post to find the cats in a small cubby. As soon as they saw him, they couldn’t take their eyes away. Tom just stood there, still as a statue, staring at them.

“They’re so cute, y/n.” Tom said, grinning towards you.

“Thank you.”

So it’s canon that Graham is allergic to cats and Kade is allergic to wasp sting.

It’s odd then that none of the other characters in the family seem to have these allergies, or at least it’s not mentioned.

We know Graham is the only one who has a cat allergy because the others have interacted with Mr. Petty Paws and been fine.

They probably got these allergies from their mom, which would explain why Charlie doesn’t have them, but do you think Dani, Graham, and Cody have wasp allergies like Kade?

Cat advice needed

My mum is having one of her spontaneous aquarius moments, and honestly normally i could care less abt it bc although it's at the expense of our (my family) sanity, it's usually funny. But this time idk how to react jsjshdbbdns

She hit me up a few days ago w/ a random phone call while i was out asking me to do some reasearch. About what? Things we need to keep a cat.

THING IS, E V E R Y O NE (her +++, me ++, my brother +, my dad +) except my gma is allergic to said cats. I still react to hypoallergenic ones and wheeze after a few hours of exposure so,,,, yk

I thought she was kidding at first but she sent a photo proof of a kitten. That we're gonna go pick up next week.

This fluffball seems to be from a family friend's cat and they can't take care of all babies that suddenly appeared.

It's break its heart or break my lungs and will risk my life for this charcoal bean. And it seems to be the consensus in the family (except the one un-allergic person, my gma).

I feel like most people I've met that are allergic to cats are also obsessed with cats, so when I meet someone allergic to them that also doesn't care about them, it feels almost a red flag.

Also, I was reminded that I also am allergic to cats bc Rölle has been with partner since August and I get a reaction seeing her now. Apparently tolerance built can also go away?

Everyone was staying at the burrow over break. Sure the first few days the sleeping arrangements were…interesting to say the least and it was quite cramped but they figured it out. However, the new problem that came about was that Y/N, George’s beloved, was deathly allergic to Crookshanks. The first day it became an issue they had simply sneezed when the small creature entered the room. Of course no one thought much of it till later that night when they complained they couldn’t breathe while in the same room as the cat. George had panicked at that and brought his poor love outside. He also threatened to leave Crookshanks in the garden if Y/N got worse. But eventually he ate his words as the next day Y/N was stuck in George’s bed. George however was too caught up in taking care of them, putting hot rags over their eyes, getting them tissues etc., to actually fulfill his threat. Hermione felt terrible but Y/N assured her it was fine. George did not agree.

CATURDAY CAT FACT

(This is PART 3 of a little cat fact series on the topic of cat allergies. By the end of the series, you should have enough facts collected that you know how to find a truly hypoallergenic cat or reduce your symptoms with a regular cat! I’ll tag them all “caturday cat facts” so you can find them.)

SO let's start talking about how we combat Fel d 1, the protein responsible for most cat allergies. Today we are going to go over the normcore but still useful strategies and some new strategies as well.

Here's the normcore list, stuff that's been around since I was a child:

Clean your house daily or at least 2x a week

Remove all carpet, curtains, rugs

Put allergen barriers over mattresses and pillows

Keep the cat out of the allergy sufferer's bedroom

Use a low-dust litter and clean it daily or 2x daily

Use HEPA filters in all rooms

Take allergy medication/do immunotherapy

Bathe your cat (reduces Fel d 1 for about 2 days)

If you have cats and are allergic, realistically you will need to do all of these things. And you will probably still have symptoms. This is why a lot of people with allergies (including me until recently) feel they have no choice but to use the real solution #1: Don't get a cat.

But that's a shitty solution!!

MODERN SCIENCE is here to help. Here is a new strategy you can add to the normcore/daily management list:

Use shampoo, wipes, and/or a spray that counteracts Fel d 1.

These solutions break down the Fel d 1 protein on the animal, instead of trying to clean it up after it sheds or suppressing your histamine response once it is in your body. I recently started doing this with my dog, and touching him no longer gives me hives! The science appears to be sound as well. Like bathing and cleaning, it is something you have to keep up regularly for it to be effective.

If you don't want to manage things, you hate cleaning, have adhd, etc, check out future posts for more long term/preventative solutions!
