Let's talk about Kazuto Arase
Tumblr media
Yakuza / Yakuza Kiwami , Yakuza 3 side content spoilers. Later on Yakuza LaD too, but I'll give a warning before that especially since a lot of people haven't played that yet.
So I have a lot of thoughts about Yakuza on my mind and just want to scream into the void about it somewhere to write 'em all down somewhere! I'm starting with... Arase.
Yeah, I know, a mostly very hated character (personality and battle-wise) that has so little screen time on top of it all too, is the first thing I'll be talking about.
Hear me out, I actually really love this character and only really started to appreciate him after I went for the Yakuza 3 platinum trophy... I've replayed this game so many times, I didn't mind it when I played through it first but seeing all the hate it has gotten, I went to replay it just in case and with that replayed it again and again because I just somehow loved it so much-
And you know, one part of Yakuza 3, also completion related so there was no way I could've missed it, were the Hitman missions. In general, after playing through all the main games I started to come back to a lot of characters I didn't like or minded the first time playing that are now some of my favourites (other examples are Tamashiro or Lau Ka Long, hell even Katsuragi)!
To come back to Arase, let's start with, well, the start: Yakuza / Yakuza Kiwami.
Introduced already in the very first Yakuza game, Arase is just there for a brief moment in the game, yet has a heavy impact on the game's story and Kiryu. It starts with Arase's oath brother Shinji being shot by Arases subordinate, Mochizuki, at least it looks like it. Shinji came here to rescue Reina, whose corpse then gets dragged on the roof of the Dragon Palace by Arase, Sergeant of the Nishikiyama Family. Now that's a pretty... heavy and sadistic first image for a character introduction, and honestly, his strong personality like that seemed also to be the reason he wasn't exactly loved by other members of the Family.
Tumblr media
His battle theme in the first Yakuza game is called "Turning Point" which also puts more emphasis on how important this scene is, Kiryu breaking down, his scream when he sees Reina's body... It's really a turning point in the story.
In Kiwami, his new theme "Virtical Point" is also used as the intro song (or at least, the intro song "Vertical Point" is similar and shortened). Which also once again shows the importance of this piece.
Of course, he's not the most important character in the story, but it's still interesting to see how much there is around him other than his rather short appearance.
Then, his fighting style. Yeah, most hate this too and also the fact that starting from there, other bosses also sometimes use his moveset or a similar one. Like, take Jiro or Jo Amon or Andre Richardson... Basically just the usual dual wielding guns while being an athlete on crack - layout. It is actually not that bad, it's even less bad when you've got the right equipment but I have to admit I didn't really have that much good equipment when I first played all the games and basically just rushed through them because I just couldn't stop!
Arase's goal here of course was also to beat Kiryu but well, just like every other character ever, he couldn't do it and got beat instead.
And that's the end of that... The end of his part in the story and also the end of his part in the Nishikiyama Family, because he got disowned right after his failure.
Which is so... hmm... It makes me think. Many others have tried to take Kiryu down, too. And I mean, Arase was normally a very successful assassin, right? Yet this one failed attempt, at which everyone else too failed, got him disowned? Seems to me like they didn't like him and gave him an impossible task to have a reason to throw him out, huh?
Tumblr media
And with that wonderful transition, let's get into his appearance in Yakuza 3.
You get introduced to the concept of the Honest Living Association, in short the HLA pretty much after Kashiwagis death. An association, founded by Kashiwagi to help Yakuza / former Yakuza who weren't meant for this life or just wanted out but just couldn't do in it on their own. For some, all they knew was the criminal life, so having a thing like this is especially helpful. Although, I'm kinda sad this was never a thing anymore after Yakuza 3. The whole concept of it was very cool.
Kiryu gets asked by Ibuki to help the HLA because there is an organisation of hitmen, also known as The Reapers (or The Avengers on PS3) whose goal was a different one than the HLA's, it was to kill Yakuza. The Reapers consisted of former criminals, mainly Yakuza, who were wronged by their superiours and expelled, disowned, you name it. Basically what happened to Arase.
Apprehending those hitmen is a totally optional part of the game and I have to admit, I didn't finish it my first time playing. Which is such a shame because it goes by so fast too when you play it after finishing the game! And the individual stories are all so interesting too, I've really enjoyed this side content and also replayed those missions already. You don't really expect someone like Arase to be behind all of it when it turns out to be him who is the founder and the leader of it all. I was already taken aback by Shinzaki being the lieutenant, or part of it at all. I often stopped by to listen to his guitar playing and talked to him, often asking myself is there's anything else up with him.
And once this one hitman contract came in and guitar playing was mentioned, I was just thinking "It can't be him...?", god, this whole side storyline just was so good. And here people come and say Yakuza 3 was a bad game.
The whole build-up to then reveal Arase was just so cool, honestly. It made me start to look more into his character after this confrontation. The fight was really cool too, just having to fight Shinzaki so many times wasn't really necessary, but Arase seems to like to fight alongside others, so fair enough.
And his theme "End Point" is also just so good. It's more similar to Turning Point than Virtical Point was. The name is also again fitting, since this is the end for The Reapers and Arases power.
It is made clear here that Arase has a strong hatred against the Yakuza and especially holds a strong grudge against Kiryu. He sees Kiryu as the reason he got wronged and had to leave the Yakuza behind, while also seeming to be very aware of the fact that the others there probably didn't like him at all.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
He's so angry at him, he holds this whole speech and talks about revenge while Kiryu tries to talk some sense into him, eventually Ibuki also joins and tries to reason with Arase too. Telling him how that's what Kashiwagi wanted, even for Arase to find a new, honest life.
Arase is too strongly lead on by his grudges, so even though it seems like he might be thinking about turning his life around, he decided to not let them help him. Then he goes on about how he will definetly return to take revenge on Kiryu... Well. That's the end of that.
It becomes clear that Arases stubborn way of thinking is kind of childish. Not taking responsibility for any of his actions, thinking that his vile personality and actions are in fact the reason he got disowned. Failing to beat Kiryu was just the final puzzle piece to have a solid reason to throw him out. He's clearly unstable, doesn't think twice before shooting someone, he could turn on anyone and wouldn't be sorry for it. Just, he doesn't seem to really think about what he does.
Tumblr media
I guess he probably thinks he's strong enough, he doesn't need to be careful. Also fitting for that is his fighting style in Dead Souls, how when he gets low on HP, he pretty much fends for himself, disregarding orders and just charging head first with full strength.
His Dead Souls appearance is also interesting. Okay, we all know, this game isn't canon, it's a spin-off and just doesn't fit in to the story. But it is interesting how he teams up with Kiryu for a bit and then leaves again. The game itself takes place after the events of Yakuza 4, meaning at this point RGG did remember that hey, they have a rival that swore to beat Kiryu one day. But after that... radio silence.
Really, this is such a shame. Just alone from his short appearances I can talk so much about Arase because he really is an interesting character with so much more potential! The only thing that's good about it is that he didn't die, making him technically one of the longest surviving characters in Yakuza which really is a great achievement.
Okay, we don't exactly know that he's still alive, but assuming due to there not being a mention of him being dead, he's probably alive. He might be, might not. Schrödinger's Arase.
Tumblr media
One other thing I thought about is Jo Amon. I mean, his outfit and fight style is also similar to Arase, but that's not what I'm mainly thinking about. So the name Amon is for the greatest assassins, right? And they have a strong hatred against Kiryu at the beginning too.
So, putting those things together, Arase being a former assassin in the Nishikiyama Family, then the leader of a dangerous hitman organisation... Then, to fight Jo Amon in Yakuza 3 you also need to do all the hitman missions other than the substories and the IF7 fights. And to start the search for Amon, you also need to go to Ibuki again, where you got all the other hitman missions.
Yeah, it's a bit far fetched, but ... not too far fetched to think that maybe Arase and at least Jo Amon could know each other. I'd say, they could team up in a future game but. Well... Yeah.
Now some more things I thought about, I'll put a warning here though.
Yakuza LaD spoilers ahead!
Soooo, in this game we've gotten a couple of characters "back" ... Some more real than others... Thinking about Joon Gi's body double.
But one character that survived is Kashiwagi! Now the bartender of a bar named Survive. What a fitting name. After surviving such a heavy attack and believed dead by, well, everyone, it was the best approach to keep a low profile, start a new life. Also, he doesn't seem to be fit for any fighting after the incident.
So Kashiwagi is still there. And, now I just thought about, what if there was a possible redemption arc for Arase? Kiryu is believed dead now too, alone the fact that it seems that Kiryu never met Kashiwagi while being in the same area is kinda sad. I like to imagine they met each other...
I think it could go either way, Arase somehow got information on Kiryu being in Ijincho. He is a professional after all. Plus, by now Kiryu is also, well, not really working with... but. You know, not fighting with the Amon Clan anymore, even having Shin Amon to help determine Ichibans strength with the (True) Final Millennium Tower.
And, now, maybe there can be some other comnecting inside the Amon Clan and some info got out to Arase, ah, hell, I don't know, it's all so far fetched but I just like to have those possible headcanons of Arase somehow coming back!
Another possibility could also be Arase thinking Kiryu has died, just per chance being in the area and just going to the Survive bar? He'd probably be way more open about the thought of redemption and with Kashiwagi probably being pretty good at talking former Yakuza into that, given how the whole HLA was his doing.
Just... Thinking about possible things.
Yakuza LaD spoilers end here!
Well. That's that.
At the end of the day, the chances of Arase returning are pretty much 0, other characters you never thought of reappearing sometimes appear in one way or another, so it can be possible, but probably won't.
But one thing is clear, looking more into this character made me really appreciate him more. I guess that's the fact with a lot of characters, not just in Yakuza, but in general.
The characters in Yakuza are just so well written and even though it has some very weird and silly plot points and plot twists, I just love this game so much and looking more into it and replaying it is just so much fun.
I even started to like the minigames in Yakuza 3, even though I got very hopeless at the last pool opponent and the goddamn Mahjong completion, ugh. But at the end of the day it's all just really fun once you get the hang of it. It hasn't aged too well when you play it after the other Yakuza games, but replaying it on all the difficulties and then casually, then trying to beat it as fast as I can just made me love the game more and more every time.
So, uh... I don't know if it's a blessing or curse for me to often really like the characters that either everyone hates or have almost to screen time. Because well... there's such a lack of content and appreciation but hey that's what I'm writing this for!
I hope maybe someone starts to appreciate Arase more after this - if anyone even reads further after learning that I love this character. :D' I swear I tried to write it with as little bias as possible. I do know he's a morally very very grey character but after all, it's a video game character. (...There's no way I'll ever like characters like Yoneda...Ogita...Or Kume though... ugh)
Well anyway, with that, I go!

@justsuha filled this out, and I felt like doing the same.  Kinda felt they didn’t have the best categories so maybe I shouldn’t have bothered, also tried not being too repetitive with my picks. Favourite Game - Final Fantasy VI, this was an easy one for me.  One of the first games I ever played, then I came back to it around like 12-14 years old and it was the first game I ever played on an emulator, then it was one of the first games I ever watched an LP on, one of the first game I ever started playing with mods, and yeah, I’ve just played this game a lot in my life. Best Story - Mass Effect (1), could’ve gone with FFVI again but eh, and maybe Hollow Knight but I feel like the world building in ME1 is crazy-deep and unparalleled.  Maybe that’s not story in like a “plot” sense, but it’s what I settled on. Favourite Art Style - Killer7, was a comfortable pick but Persona 5 is also a really crisp game.  Also thought about other things that are more atmospheric like Metroid Prime, Hollow Knight, or Bloodborne. Favourite Soundtrack - Final Fantasy VI, like I said, didn’t want to be repetitive, so there was games that had like a banger of a track like Papers, Please, or something like Super Meat Boy, but I couldn’t really justify anything being equal to FFVI.   Hardest Game - Dragon Age: Origins, Felt like a Soulsborne game was the “gimme” answer so I wanted to swerve a bit.  DA:O is hard as fuck, if you’re not optimizing your build you’re not beating that game.  Even on “easy” I’m like chill man Funniest Game - Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, was tempted to go Undertale but since that’s kind of just a parody game I feel like it had a lot more liberties it could take to still be funny.  TTYD is super funny while still being like it’s own game. Game I like that everyone hates - Gears of War 2, some kid in Gr. 11 said I should get a 360 and play that, and so I did.  I played the online mode so much, but it never really felt like a popular competitive game.  I liked being so beefy, it’s basically just one-shotting people with shotguns is the meta and so the whole stalking someone to close the gap to be in range was super fun to me.  Campaign kinda trash and my friend wanted to get an achievement for co-op beating it on the hardest difficult that was miserable for me, but I think it’s a really fun game to play with some great audio too, the SFX are top notch. Game I hate that everyone likes - Borderlands, hate is a strong word but man I don’t really care about this game at all and people have been hyping it up for a decade. Underrated Game - Catherine, all my irl friends I tell about this game don’t know what it is, until I remind them and they go “oh yeah, that game looked weird/was too hard.” don’t know anyone who’s actually played more than an hour of it.  It’s one of my all-time faves, though. Overrated Game - Breath of the Wild, my wife says I didn’t give it a “fair shake” but I played like 20 hours and zzz... was tempted to go with a Pokemon game too, but it’s more a franchise in general than a specific game. Best Voice Acting - Yakuza Kiwami, I didn’t really have any real opinions on a game having good voice acting; generally they don’t.  Yakuza is all VA’d in Japanese so that’s probably why, but it felt pretty cool and was the only thing that I could think of actively enhanding a VG experience.  Maybe shoulda gone GTA (3 or San Andreas), both are really dated and definitely don’t sound that good anymore but one of my favourite games to listen to dialogue from. Worst Voice Acting - Metroid: Other M, not bad in terms of the actual talent of the VA’s but damn if it doesn’t ruin everything about Samus as a character.  “REMEMBA ME?!” Favourite Male - Kazuma Kiryu, was tempted to go General Leo from FFVI, but couldn’t find an image big enough before I resized this, which I could have easily worked around, but I also really like the Dragon of Dojima! It’s weird because he seems like such a simple design but he’s just badass in the right way, and I don’t know why more games can’t get it right.   Favourite Female - Franziska von Karma, from the 2nd Ace Attorney game.  For some reason had a huge crush on her, when I was younger I even drew some fanart of her which I ain’t done for nobody but her and Broly. Favourite Protagonist - Samus Aran, wanted to go with a “franchise” character and Samus is always super cool (except in Other M), I’ll always be excited to play her in some new game.   Favourite Village - Kakariko Village, felt like kind of a weird question, ‘cuz like if it was favourite area or something, I could have put some other stuff (Greenpath in Hollow Knight for example), and being a village I feel like basically limits you to medieval games but not the main hub either as that’s “a city.”  But Ocarina of Time’s Kakariko Village is always really fun to roll in to, also thought of the Goron Village, or just any village in Secret of Mana because that village theme is soo good. Most Hated Character - Nathan Drake, have barely even played Uncharted, but I just always hate any character with his personality, and he’s the biggest and most well-known.  Maybe he’s fine but meh. First Game You Played - Super Mario World, can’t say for 100%, but this and Super Mario Kart were games I was playing a lot since at like 4 or 5 my older brother owned them and they’re the most baby friendly.  Also remember playing a lot of PC games that my dad had, Timon and Pumba pinball, Chip’s Challenge, Ski Free, and stuff like that.  Skunny Kart Racing for DOS but I never understood how to get to DOS. Favourite Company - Bioware, I don’t really care about gaming companies in general, but Mass Effect and DA:O are some of my favourite games.  I might say Square as well but they do a lot of stuff.   Hated Company - Ubisoft, don’t hate them all but I just feel like they only make games I have zero interest in. Depressing Game - Doki Doki Literature Club, this and creepy are kinda really similar I feel, but I went DDLC but I kinda forget how it even ends.  I just remember feeling bummed about the purple and pink haired girl, and then the Monika scene just being uncomfortable (in a good way). Creepy Game - Doom3, don’t really play creepy games, Doom3 was suspenseful so I don’t know if that counts.  I had it for like 2 years, played it once for like 10 hours straight, and never played it again.  Still lives in my head. Happy Game - Super Meat Boy, is this a happy game? I don’t know, I feel like it’s got a pumped up energy which I equate to happiness.  It’s fun and the music makes it really addictive. Favourite Ending - Metal Gear Solid, don’t really have a great answer to this.  I really like Meryl and Snake riding off on their snowmobile though.

I saw your rankings for all the games and while I haven't finished 7 yet, my rankings would be about the same as yours :0 I do have to ask though, do you have an opinion on what games have the best substories?
0, 5 (they're what made me love Saejima, and Shinada's are pretty insane too), and Dead Souls. Kiwami's are good as well even if a lot of them are... outdated.
3 has some very good ones as well (Rikiya's specifically are like... a must-see, and the fact that so many have cutscenes is nice too). I just think that playing the original release first kind of ruined my enjoyment a bit.
Yakuza 7 has some really great ones too, I finished most of them yesterday and I was losing my shit over the giant roomba one and the public pisser one. When I beat him in a fight and it said "Added to Sujidex: Piss Wizard" I completely lost it and had to pause my stream until I stopped laughing.
I think (specifically localization-wise) 0 was at its peak with writing, and even if the story kind of dropped off for me after playing other games in the series (it's definitely not my favourite and shares a lot of common tropes with other games – K2) the substories are all just fucking incredible. Like, every single one; and Majima is an incredibly fun protagonist to watch get pulled into these weird situations. Even though I've finished most substories in each Yakuza game, 0 is the only one I've beaten Amon in.
Dead Souls' is in a unique position and absolutely goes ham with the side content. I don't know what else to say about it aside from the fact that Majima's hostess stuff is full of some of my favourite Yakuza moments, and there's a substory where Majima has to try and hide the fact that some guy is a zombie while they hold a meeting so he shoves a ball gag in his mouth.
I haven't played much of 4's substories because I just fucking hate the game (and I've heard the substories are just as edgy as the main story), 6's substories SUCKED HARD and made me really uncomfortable at times (Kiryu can hit on REALLY young girls. what the fuck.) with a few exceptions of some good substories around Hiroshima, and I didn't play Ishin's because it already took a lot from me just trying to mentally translate Ishin's main story while I was playing lol.
I feel like (for me at least) both Judgment and Y7 kind of... rely on older games' substories (both have onomichio related ones, for example), but the ones that are brand new are REALLY good.

Opening The Open World
I’ve played two open world games recently and it got me thinking. They’re The Outer Worlds and Fallout 4 and I’m not quite happy with either of their worlds. This is for a number of reasons and, given the huge amount of worlds out there, I thought it was best to try and come up with my favourite formula. A tricky task, because different games try and do different things with their worlds. Instead of tackling this as a whole, let’s try and first narrow down on what I mean by ‘Open World’.
Another word for it is ‘sandbox game’, which I think is pretty apt for the most part. They are big, open playpens for you to run around in. The real stickler comes when you try and find a point in that. Some kids make castles in the sandbox, other kids stomp on them. But at the end of the day, the sand is raked back over it, rendering a lot of it moot. In other words, making your game open world risks it becoming largely pointless. A time sink. There are, however, ways around it.
Tumblr media
Let’s first examine the two previously mentioned games first, dial in on what’s ticking me off about them. The Outer Worlds I spoke about in my review. Rather than a strict open world, The Outer Worlds has something more akin to hub worlds. They are fairly tight and serve to link together small towns of people. There’s little to no benefit in exploration and the world merely serves as a pretty backdrop. While I appreciate the proper sense of being on another planet, the rather bare world seems like a bit of a waste.
Fallout 4, conversely, is something of the complete opposite. It's rather spacious world is stuffed to bursting point with things to see, to the point where the vast majority of them are completely irrelevant. Even the sidequests get lost in the mix, as they send you to another similar looking building to kill one of a handful of enemy types. It’s spread incredibly thin, like one of those single packets of butter spread over an entire loaf.
What we’re looking for then is something in the middle of the two. The world can be big, certainly, but it must have some depth to it. There must be something off the beaten track to justify the expanse but at the same time, the world must feel somewhat alive. Bethesda used to be quite good at that. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion had a rather nice open world, its cities felt populated (even though they weren’t) and the things off the side of the road tended to yield interesting, original side quests. Or there’d be things like shrines, which could change how you play.
Tumblr media
That’s just the basics, however. You can get the size and ratio of things to do right but there’s one crucial element that’s hard to nail: it has to be interesting. Part of that is down to making the things you do matter. It can matter to yourself or to the world. For example, you could dig down to the end of a dungeon and find something that compliments or shakes up your playing style. It’s actually had a difference on something. I bring this up because it’s remarkable how little a lot of open worlds give you that isn’t just more of the same.
It’s worse when the open world screwing about is mandatory. The Just Cause series exemplifies both extremes of this argument. It’s a series that uses something called Chaos Points, generated by destroying various things around its large world. In Just Cause 2 these are required to progress, forcing you to destroy all the similar looking stuff before you can move on. It’s not rewarded beyond giving you the game you’ve already paid for. In Just Cause 3, they mean nothing at all - it’s just for achievements. A huge, beautiful place that ends up being pointless.
Ideally, your actions in this open world should shape the world around you in some way. This is what the Fallout series was trying to do, with its Karma and reputation system. It reached its peak with New Vegas, where the entire plot could change depending on where your screwing about led you. In my mind, that’s the peak of an open world. Full of interesting things to do, it looks fairly interesting and it feels alive. As much as a wasteland can, anyway.
Tumblr media
There is of course another prevailing theory: these games are just for having a laugh in. After all, there’s nothing inherently deep or worthwhile in exploring in Saints Row IV and yet it’s also bloody fantastic. The key thing for me, is the interest. Saints Row IV made it interesting simply to get around. You can’t beat bouncing over buildings with a single jump. In truth, you just need something to justify spending so many hours not doing the main storyline. Whether it’s a cool dungeon to explore, hitting people in Yakuza or what not.
I guess this is why I never quite on with the modern GTA games. Their worlds don’t hold very much interest to me. They leave me with no desire to go off the beaten track. Besides, once you’ve punched someone to death and run from the police, you’ve pretty much done it all. For open worlds, I want something unique, special. Be it interesting to look at, to see or to get to, I want something that has depth just by being there. If I wanted a depressing city that was a pain in the arse to get around, I’d get a train to London.

It’s nearly Christmas, right? Who would like bespoke felt ornaments of their favourite character or OTP? Then you’ve come to the right place!
I made the whole ME:A gang last year, plus a few extras for friends and I realised that I love making them.
💛What characters will you do?
Those who are familiar with my blog will know that I am very much into Mass Effect at the moment. But, to be honest, I’m up for all sorts of characters from video games, comics, movies, TV, cartoons, anime, pets etc! Just be aware that they will all be in the exemplar style.
💜Pricing
·  £20 for one (£5 extra for intricate/fiddly designs or ones that will use a lot of resources (see examples)
·   £35 for a pair (£5 extra each for intricate/fiddly designs (see examples)
·   P&P is separate (regional prices under the cut)
💚Ordering and Payment
·   Please let me know that you’re interested by either using my Tumblr Ask box, or by emailing jdwyp.commissions(atmark)gmail.com
·   Please tell me who the character(s) is you’d like me to make. If by email attach a picture.
·   Payment to be made by PayPal before I start work.
·   I will show you the design I will work from before I start.
💛Important Notes
·   These ornaments are around 3 inches tall.
·   If I’ve made the character before I will use the same pattern, but colour swaps are fine, please communicate this to me when you inquire.
·   You must provide clear images of OCs that I can work from.
·   I will initially open 6 slots. If this fits well into my schedule I will open more!
·   I reserve the right to turn down any commission without explanation.
💜Examples
Do look at the examples I have below. You will recognise other ME:A characters, Connor (Detroit: Become Human), Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans (Resident Evil 6), Gladio and Ignis (FF15), Majima, Kiryu and Goromi (Yakuza) belonging to @sketchvicious, and finally Roadhog and Junkrat (Overwatch) belonging to @one-irradiated-muppet.

💚Intricate Designs
I will decide upon seeing the character(s) whether it will be considered an intricate design. I want your ornament to look its best so I won’t simplify unless you ask me to! Vetra and Drack below, as well as the above Roadhog and Junkrat are good examples of characters that would cost a bit extra because of the intricate armour/design elements, the time it takes for the embroidery, and the extra resources I need to use.

💛The possibilities are endless!!

Likes, tags and reblogs are super appreciated if you think you know people who will be interested! Thank you!

Note
uhhh for the ask thing, what are your favourite video games in general?
For series, Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy! For genre… I don’t have a particular preference that I could pin down with one name. Not shooter games, at least. Mostly games with some sort of fighting in them, whether it’s active fighting or strategy type battles (like in Fire Emblem, where everything comes down to a calculation and planning for the most part). Games that are fun to play and have good stories, rather than just interesting gameplay mechanics. A game could have the greatest gameplay mechanics in the world, but if its story sucks then I wouldn’t want to play it. Part of this probably comes from me loving to grind and beat games by being overleveled. I’ve also loved games where it was impossible/extremely hard or too tedious to be overleveled, so that’s not the sole thing, but it contributes. Games where you can grind are pretty fun too.
looking at my favorite games, a theme is that they all make me cry at some point. Not the entire time, because that’s too depressing, but somewhere. Something that gets me all emotional and really involved. The characters have to be part of it too. Characters usually make or break my enjoyment of a game.
So does plot. For example, NieR: Automata (no plot spoilers follow, just thoughts). I loved the soundtrack. But the plot was… not well executed, in my opinion. There was no real central goal. At least, not a clear one that I could follow. The game before it, NieR, had a central goal from the beginning, and that I liked. I want to know why the characters are doing what they are doing. What are they working toward? Another one of my favorite games, Yakuza 0, had a central plot that kept getting slammed in other directions, if you ask me. However, even with changes, I could still tell where they were going. Character motivations were clear where they needed to be. And the suspense in that one… I could go on. But basically, I like games with compelling characters and plots that are relatively clear and usually defined for a significant amount of time (Like with VII. Stopping Sephiroth wasn’t the goal from the second the game started, but it was important for a majority of the game).
Bonus points for great soundtracks! NieR (Gestalt) has my favorite video game soundtrack of all time (I’m listening to it right now, actually. The soundtrack is not only good for game music, but listening music. I highly recommend you check it out!) FFVII’s soundtrack was the first thing I ever bought for my iPod.
As for top individual games, in no particular order:
1) Final Fantasy VII (I run a blog for it. Of course it’s up here)
2) Final Fantasy IV (The complete collections version is my favorite. I really like the characters in it, and the plot is interesting too. It had enough twists to be fun without being excessive, and it tugged at my heartstrings at times.)
3) Yakuza 0 (I beat this a few weeks ago and damn did I love it. The story man… The sidequests were fantastic, definitely, but the story was one of the most amazing ones I’ve ever played. I started sobbing more than once)
4) NieR (Gestalt and Replicant. Mostly Gestalt, since that’s the one that was released in the US as “NieR”) ((The soundtrack was amazing as I said above, and the characters were great. The main character was likeable, but 2 of the sidekicks who were with him were absolutely amazing. Particularly GW, for those of you who’ve played the game.))
5) Fire Emblem: Awakening (This one is complicated. I love the first third. I love the last third or so. The middle I’m not so in love with. But this hits so many of my favorite concepts. The soundtrack, while not as consistently good as NieR, includes several amazing pieces and doesn’t include anything I dislike, so that’s a selling point. I also love the gameplay mechanics of the Fire Emblem series, even if I said that that isn’t the most important part of a game, so that gets it up here too. It was the first Fire Emblem game I ever played myself rather than watching a walkthrough of, so it holds a special place in my heart)
I’m mostly a Nintendo girl, to be honest. Even though only two of these were released on Nintendo platforms, now that I look at them. And of those 2, one of them I like best for the PSP version! But yeah. These are my favorite games. Thanks for sending in the ask, this was fun!
