Adriana Lima knows one thing for sure: "If I had a last wish in my life, it would be to be back with Victoria's Secret," she says.
Last week, that vision became a reality for the supermodel, who was "thrilled" to return to the brand after retiring her Angel wings following a 20-year run and departing from the lingerie, clothing and beauty behemoth in 2018.
And while Lima's comeback had been five years in the making, another iconic moment for Victoria's Secret was in the works too — the relaunch of its Heavenly Eau de Parfum, which she says was as perfect a time as ever for her to return to her roots.
"Heavenly is the perfect time to reunite the brand. It's the most iconic and timeless fragrance with Victoria's Secret," Lima tells PEOPLE while attending a branded launch event in New York City on Tuesday. "I missed Victoria's Secret."
The 41-year-old's return is accompanied by her dreamy campaign spotlighting Heavenly's new sleek golden bottle, and that captures the fragrance's iconic "warmth and luminous glow."
The ethereal ambiance of the photo shoot reflects how Lima feels to be modeling for the brand again. "I was living a dream," she says of what it was like to be back on set. "It's really beautiful.
Lima first touched down on the Victoria's Secret scene in 1999 (and has walked a grand total of 18 of its famous Fashion Shows), and she has memories of the oldie but goodie eau de parfum spritzed throughout her history with the company.
"Heavenly has been also part of the Victoria's Secret Show for many, many years as well. I don't know if you know, they had the body lotion that was shimmery, so we used to use that a lot before we walked out," she remembers of the floral and vanilla-like blend.
The notes of jasmine (layered with hints of freesia, lotus and gold musk) also strike a chord with Lima, who says that the ingredient evokes so many memories with just a whiff.
"I am obsessed with jasmine. The flower, I think, is the most elegant and feminine. I will definitely have jasmine in my house, and, when I smell it, it brings me back to my childhood. It's a beautiful, elegant scent," she explains.
Even now, Heavenly remains one of Lima's favorites for its air of femininity, sensuality and elegance, which is key "when a fragrance is the best tool for you to be remembered [by]," she notes.
In a way, Lima is also morphing what it means to be an Angel, now that she's a mom. In August, she welcomed her baby boy Cyan Lima, whom she shares with her film producer boyfriend Andre Lemmers. Lima is also mom to daughters Valentina, 12, and Sienna, 9, whom she co-parents with ex-husband Serbian basketball player Marko Jarić.
With a shift in the company's messaging, though — a 2021 rebrand that focused on diversifying the field — she was able to slip right back into her relationship with Victoria's Secret.
"I feel very honored to be part of a brand that actually is embracing and celebrating women in every stage of their life," says Lima. This was the case for the fashion muse, who entered her 20s and 30s with the label.
"Now I'm in a new stage and I feel really happy to be here and to be celebrated. Not only by the brand, but also by everybody that will be seeing the Heavenly campaign."
Lima is back in the game and balancing it all, from being a model to being a mom. But, she's reveling in the multiple jobs she has in her life because, she says, "every element is my element."
"I believe women, we are multitasking. There is a side that you're a woman, there is a side that you're a business person, there is a side that you have to take care of all the family problems. So we are multi-talented creatures. For me, to be happy, I need to have the combination of all family, business, work and the time for myself," she says.

Im not the Noah anon youve been getting all month but Im curious what your favorite Noah roles are
well patrick is obviously an absolute given, right? so here’s my other-than-patrick top 10...
Tumblr media
10. dan || street series - the legend of dan || why wouldn’t you love noah looking directly into the camera and giving you gentle compliments before disappearing into the ether like the world’s nicest cryptid?
Tumblr media
9. jj dahl || buffaloed || jj just wants to run his bar and help his family, but his sister has a way of making both of those things difficult for him. he’s a sweet bb trying his best, and there’s not nearly enough of him in this movie
Tumblr media
8. kevin daly ||  kevin from work || this show isn’t perfect of course, and we all know noah didn’t exactly have the time of his life filming it, but in spite of all that, i do enjoy him in this role. a lot of times i find guys who continue to chase their dream girls after being rejected to be pretty off-putting, but kevin [mostly] isn’t actively pursuing audrey so much as just trying to survive his days with as little awkwardness as possible, which is much more endearing. he’s a good guy, infused with this little undercurrent of sadness that noah plays really well. now if he could just figure out that brian is actually the person he should be with, we’d be golden
Tumblr media
7. farley gordon || score: a hockey musical || how can you not love this nerdy, singing, organic wool sweater-wearing, seventeen-year-old, hockey-playing pacifist?
Tumblr media
6. sam || house of lies - tragedy of the commons || sam’s in a boy band, wants happiness more than money, and gets as romantic as a dave & busters will allow. he’s upset that conner, one of the other boy band members, has become a giant asshole, and tbh i’m pretty sure it’s mostly because sam’s secretly in love with him. also, he gets to wear this floral bomber and kiss kristen bell, which... #goals
Tumblr media
5. owen || lay over || 10/10 would spend the night exploring any layover city with this cute and amiable accordion player (and be very tempted not to leave in the morning)
Tumblr media
4. marshall wheeler || strange days at blake holsey high || this is where i originally know noah from--my college roommate, my boyfriend, and i would watch this show in my dorm room between afternoon classes, and marshall was always my favorite. he’s actually kind of like a young patrick brewer--smart, caring, musically talented, sometimes not as open with the people he cares about as he could be, at one point attempts to start his own business... bb noah is a cutie, and it’s a fun time if you’re into shows about teenage canadian science club members at a boarding school built on top of a wormhole, lolol
Tumblr media
3. matt || people hold on || matty is... a bit of a mess. he wears 6 different shirts in less than 48 hours, and aside from just trying to have a good time with his friends, he doesn’t really know what he’s doing or what he wants out of life, which is honestly so very relatable. yes, he’s a bit bro-y, but he’s also emotionally vulnerable in that way noah does so particularly well. also, matt and dan def used to date, and no one is gonna convince me otherwise
Tumblr media
2. ryan || backpackers || ryan is an aspiring writer who’s a bit anxious but also funny and charming and in the process of learning to be more adventurous, and he’s much more of a romantic than the premise of s1 might suggest. and look i know i have said this same basic thing about several of these characters, but he is definitely in love with his best friend in this one. s1 gives us great curl content, and s2 gives us... well... the scene in this gif, which is more than worth the whole watch, but the entire season is a pretty good time and noah looks so beautiful throughout it
Tumblr media
1. stock burton || old stock || where do i even start? stock is so very polite and gentle and kind, while also still so haunted by his past. he’s endearingly anachronistic and loves a good sweater vest. he wants to fix the things he can and hide away from the things he can’t, and he’s so accepting of other people and their mistakes but so much less accepting of himself and his own, and he doesn’t realize how badly he’s in need of a friend or a push out of his comfort zone until both come along, and i just have a LOT of feelings about him and have honestly cried about it multiple times. i love him so much. he deserves the entire world

✵ Alexander and Aurora
( 1 ) who spends hours putting up lights only to get tangled in them and storm off?
Alexander wants to get invested in this activity, particularly because it reminds him of the small and quaint Christmases he shared with his mother when he was a child. After telling Aurora (and so confidently, at that) that he had everything under control, Alex would first get stuck in the large, live tree they’d procured from Cloverwood Forest. After getting his foot caught in a tangle of wires and sputtering out a slew of curses, he spots a live squirrel that had been nesting inside of the tree. The squirrel, angry and frightened by the sight of an angry human man, flings itself at Alexander’s face. Alex fumbles about the living room as an adult, proceeding to get more ensnared in the lights with each step and swat of his hand against the screaming squirrel stuck on his face. By the time he finally manages to toss the rodent outside and yanks the Christmas lights off of him, Aurora is hiding a visible laugh behind her mouth.
When Alex comes out of his room after sulking an hour later, the entire tree is finished with a pristine, ethereal twinkle, as Aurora calmly sits on the nearby couch and leisurely flips through a magazine, as she gazes up at him and asks: “What, like it’s hard?”
( 2 ) who accidentally eats a whole box of christmas chocolates in one sitting?
Alexander devours the entire tin of chocolate chip cookies one of the Resistance members made for him. As he attempts to tell Aurora between mouthfuls of food, he’s just grateful someone other than Raymond took the reins of the holiday cooking this year. Aurora chooses to stick to her smoothie and tells Alex that she believes him.
( 3 ) who insists on watching the cheesey hallmark christmas movies?
Aurora absolutely gets invested in having them watch these romantic movies together, all snuggled up on the couch, and every time a cheating boyfriend or leading male who fucks up crosses the screen, she simply turns and glares at him. By the third night of these movies, Alexander realizes she’s teaching him a lesson.
( 4 ) who insists on playing nothing but michael buble in the few days running up to christmas?
I get the feeling both of them listen to whatever comes on through the Spotify Christmas station radio or whatever music they’re listening to at the moment. Alex gets a bit excited whenever a Michael Buble song comes on, while simultaneously explaining to Aurora that he’s a pretentious-sounding little prick. This usually causes an ensuing argument, where Aurora explains that if Alex really felt that way, why didn’t he just change the channel? The argument, as per usual, is usually resolved by Alex bending Aurora over the counter and having his wicked way with her.
( 5 ) who gets their presents wrapped at the mall so the other cant go snooping
Alexander absolutely prefers to do things himself, and that involves Christmas shopping. But he has a feeling that Aurora is nosy and enjoys snooping, primarily because she simply can’t stand not knowing something, and takes to staying up late at night to wrap her presents once she’s fast asleep. He hides them throughout the house, in special hiding places she’ll never find, because he knows how much she likes to explore.
( 6 ) who insists on making snow angels?
Aurora is the first one to suggest such an activity, but the act of making snow angels soon turns into a snowball fight, one that Alex wins before pinning Aurora against the ground, glittering snowflakes woven through her golden hair, before kissing her. The temperature might be below freezing, and he’s bound in layers of clothes to protect himself from the chill, so why does he suddenly feel so very warm?
( 7 ) who put christmas outfits on all the pets?
Aurora wins this one without any hesitation whatsoever. Alexander would be absolutely horrified if he came home from hunting or working one day and found Brutus and Maximus, his two prized dogs, all dolled up to look like the Grinch and a Christmas tree. In fact, he very well might faint.
( 8 ) do they go to family’s or have a quiet day in?
Both Alexander and Aurora have complicated feelings regarding families. After Alexander lost his mother as a young child, Lilianna and her parents became the closest thing to a family Alexander has ever known. Given the turbulent relationship he currently shares with the Shu Lei heiress, Alexander is concerned that he would be unwelcome at any holiday table prepared by Lilianna or her father, Jiang.
Aurora, similarly, knows a family within the Garden, but not much else. She has become so enmeshed with the very fabric of Alexander’s life at this moment that the thought of them spending the holiday season without each other seems...painful.
( 9 ) who insists on wearing matching ugly christmas jumpers?
Alexander would be able to see the humor in wearing ugly holiday sweaters, though Aurora would argue that she would never wear something with built-in lights and a twinkling reindeer nose stitched across a scratchy knitted sweater. Instead, she dons a piece of Christmas-inspired lingerie, decked in red and silver like a present waiting to be unwrapped.
( 10 ) who waits up until midnight to give the other their present?
Alexander rolls over in his bed, grumbling to himself in his sleep, only to feel a sudden pressure on his chest. He opens his eyes and finds Aurora sitting on his chest, a smile widening across her face as she holds a small, artfully-wrapped present in her hands. She spent all evening too anxious and nervous about his reaction to even consider sleep, so the moment the clock struck midnight and Christmas descended upon Astralis, she chose to take the chance to start their festivities a bit early.
( 11 ) who insists on hand-made presents only one year?
Alexander thinks it would be nice to do something simple for each other for the duration of the holiday season. Aurora (politely? Not so politely?) disagrees, as she’s seen Alexander’s skillset and would rather not wake up to some anonymous faerie’s wings wrapped in a box for her to open.
( 12 ) who puts mistletoe on every door frame?
Aurora absolutely does this and then pretends to get mad every time they both pass under the doorframe. “Ugh, I guess we have to kiss again.”
( 13 ) who gets too drunk at the work christmas party and has to be picked up at 9:15pm? who gets angry and almost tells kids that santa isnt real?
Aurora is somehow the answer to both of these, though it’s worth noting that Alexander would absolutely get irritated enough with a group of children whom he presumed to be little more than arrogant brats and tell them the mystical man in the sky was nothing more than a figment of their imaginations. Aurora would do it after a PTA mom scolded her for grinding on Alex in a Santa costume at a work party, angrily telling the woman “First of all, it’s none of your business. Second of all, it’s not like he’s fucking real.”

One in a Kajillion.
Kajillionaire writer and director Miranda July tells Ella Kemp about soap suds, pink nails, Evan Rachel Wood’s impressive tuck-and-roll skills, and the playfulness of queer culture. “What is natural is pretty up for grabs.”
Welcome to the world of Miranda July: marshmallow-pink soap bubbles leak through the walls, love is transactional, Bobby Vinton’s ‘Mr. Lonely’ is our national anthem. The indomitable and elusive auteur—also performance artist, actor, novelist, mother and musician—has gifted the world her third feature as director, Kajillionaire, a heist movie, love story and family portrait all wrapped up in a delicate, if a little lopsided, bow.
July stays firmly behind the camera here, after taking lead roles in her first two feature-length films, Me And You And Everyone We Know and The Future. But the filmmaker’s voice is so sharp that her absence is never felt, as we watch Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins bring her story to life. “There’s lots of parts of my other movies I’m not in, and if anything it’s a hassle when I’m in it,” July tells us over the telephone. “My leading ladies were one hundred percent dedicated here, whereas I would have to shift back and forth, so there’s really no sense of loss.”
Tumblr media
Writer-director Miranda July on the set of ‘Kajillionaire’.
Those leading ladies begin with Wood as Old Dolio. She is the daughter of Theresa (Winger) and Robert (Jenkins), who have raised her with the thrill of a heist in her heart. The family dynamic is all business; the unit functions as a mob crew, forever planning the next con. This gives Old Dolio a laser focus on the job, and a painfully obvious lack of tenderness in her life. It’s when the family meets Melanie (Rodriguez) during an ambitious con that Old Dolio’s world cracks open. While her parents see Melanie—all heat and curves—as an asset to their schemes, Old Dolio—lank hair and shapeless clothes—feels something else, something she doesn’t yet recognize.
Those familiar with Wood’s work elsewhere might be taken aback. Old Dolio is immediately and consistently unpredictable, with a chilly lack of emotion that comes from simply not knowing where to find it. She has clearly been raised in an environment that prioritizes hustle over love, and this converges in Wood’s voice: a low, monotone register that’s never questioned on screen, and which somehow feels entirely normal for July’s uncanny world, but surely hides something potent to be explored.
“I would have never asked an actor to do that,” July says of Wood’s register-change. “It seems a bit too much, and really risky.” That’s surprising: July’s films, with their brazen singularity and offbeat humor, could be the sort that would savor such a vocal transformation as a playful quirk. It’s refreshing and illuminating to hear how, actually, it was a perfect coincidence. “When we were rehearsing, Evan said that her original register was that much lower, but she used to get vocal nodules and so trained her voice higher, which is the one people know now,” July explains. “But she said she was just as comfortable being lower, so I asked if she could stay there for the whole film. I noticed right away when she dropped down, she dropped into character.”
Tumblr media
Gina Rodriguez, Richard Jenkins and Evan Rachel Wood in ‘Kajillionaire’.
Although July will never reveal all her secrets, nothing happens by chance. Old Dolio’s voice exemplifies Kajillionaire’s careful understanding of fluid, curious sexuality that survives and thrives in the spaces where people are just figuring things out. It’s not about seducing, but learning and adapting. “Voices, like hair, are things that we play with at different times in our life,” says July. “Certainly in queer culture, it wouldn’t be unheard of for someone to deepen their voice, consciously or with hormones. I like that it’s a little surprising. What is natural is pretty up for grabs.”
Debra Winger, too, is unrecognizably compelling. As entertaining as Kajillionaire’s characters are, there’s a faint air of menace about Theresa and Robert, as they always and only have one thing on their minds. “The actors took flight,” July explains. “They did so much I couldn’t have expected, and for someone like me who is so used to doing things all alone, that feels like gold.”
Comedy breathes through both July’s whip-smart script and her actors’ precision-engineered physicality. Theresa, Robert and Old Dolio tense up in the same way to process their fear of flying, they limbo along a very specific part of a street to avoid making eye contact with their landlord. “I don’t know how to do a tuck-and-roll, I can’t do the limbo like Evan can!” July laughs. “There were things I had come up with that were almost abstract, but she could do everything and take it really far.”
The relationship between Old Dolio and Melanie is just as disorienting as the one between Old Dolio and her parents, and between her parents and Melanie. Old Dolio attends parenting classes to better understand the ways her parents behave; Melanie offers to fill that gap for a very specific sum of money; Theresa and Robert search for ways to understand pleasure, to feel that they, as individual people, matter in a world lived on the outskirts of ‘normal’.
Tumblr media
Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger and Evan Rachel Wood in ‘Kajillionaire’.
It’s why Bobby Vinton’s 1962 heartbreaker ‘Mr. Lonely’ feels like a perfect hymn for these odd souls to explore what they’re missing. The familiar theme returns throughout the film, and there’s now a cover of the track by Angel Olsen on an ‘inspired by’ record. Olsen adds a sense of guttural melancholy that still has bite. The cover was the idea of Kajillionaire composer Emile Mosseri (who changed the game with his work on The Last Black Man in San Francisco).
“Not many people can sing like that,” July says. “We were sending each other some of her songs while shooting anyway, just as inspiration. It’s very modern when sung by a woman, and of course in the film Old Dolio is Mr. Lonely—but you don’t get the gender twist of it when it’s sung by Bobby Vinton.”
Mosseri’s own ethereal score—an orchestral, very old-Hollywood waltzing theme—makes so much of the film feel like a projection of make-believe, dotted with images that could only be plucked from our unconscious. But, July says: “None of these images literally come from dreams.” (Although she admitted earlier this year that the name Old Dolio came from a friend’s dream about a list of cat names).
Still, detailing the poetry behind a key ethereal image, the filmmaker’s curiosity and sensitivity is undeniable. “There is something very sexy to me about those pink nails coming off,” she says of a scene in which Old Dolio carefully peels off Melanie’s acrylics one by one, as a swirling soundtrack fills the air and the light in a grubby diner turns golden. “I was always trying to find ways that Old Dolio could be in a little over her head and accidentally show her cards, even though she might be fighting against her feelings about Melanie. I guess those nails would seem entirely foreign to her, so she would approach them in this animal way.”
We feel compelled to ask July about another unshakeable image: the glittering suds that Old Dolio and her parents face every day in the rented office space they call home, oozing through the walls from the business next door. Does it make sense? Will it ever be fixed? Can you love something so destructive?
“I was trying to figure out why the rent would be cheap enough for them to afford that place,” July says, matter of fact. “There would have to be something really wrong with it. But then I thought, why not make it beautiful also?” And it’s as simple as that. Something inherently wrong, inexplicable, still so luxurious it stays lodged in your brain. Such is the slippery, effervescent brilliance of Miranda July and Kajillionaire.

NetEase Special: Relive 20 years of Faye Wong - The Legend (2009)
In 1969, she fell to earth.
In 1989, an album was released in Hong Kong called "Wang Jingwen".
In 2009, it’s "still the same old phrase": If I stop singing, please forget me.
The more she wants you to forget, the more clearly you remember.
Faye Wong, a Beijing gal, created a legend for twenty years.
Beijing Gal
Faye Wong was born on August 8, 1969 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. When Faye attended Ditan Primary School, she was known for singing and was also selected for the CCTV Junior Choir Group.
But this "little singer" actually had a turbulent childhood. Since her grandfather served as a member of the legislature during the Cultural Revolution, her father was sent to the May Seventh Cadre School due to his background. Faye Wong had to live with her mother. Before the age of fifteen, she took her mother's surname and her father's name "Lin" and her name was temporarily changed to Xia Lin.
Her mother worked as a soprano singer in the Coal Mining Art Troupe. Due to her busy performance schedule and the absence of her husband, she had to send Faye to her aunt's house in Shanghai for care. After the Cultural Revolution ended in 1976, her father returned to Beijing and Faye Wong’s family was reunited.
15 Year Old Teresa Teng
At the end of the first semester of Faye Wong's first year in high school, a Beijing record company was looking for singers in Beijing's performing arts groups. After an audition, the record company selected Faye. But her mother felt that her child should put her studies first and she was explicitly forbidden to sing. However, her father had a different mindset. At that time, he was handling the formalities for Faye to immigrate to Hong Kong. In his reasoning, he thought that if his daughter could gain a little achievement as a pop singer, there may be more opportunities to go to Hong Kong. With her father's persuasion, her mother reluctantly relented. This resulted in the first album Faye Wong recorded in her life: "Where Does The Wind Come From" and subsequently "Miss Charming".
These albums were made entirely of covers of Teresa Teng's songs. Faye Wong at that time had a youthful voice and imitated well. Due to Teresa Teng's popularity in the mainland, the sales of these bubblegum pop albums were quite impressive but overall, people did not remember the name Faye Wong.
Depart for Hong Kong
In 1987, Faye Wong successfully passed her entry exam for the Biology Department at Xiamen University. But she gave up her studies and immigrated to Hong Kong with her father. When she first arrived in Hong Kong, she worked as a model. But soon, she realized that this was not the life she wanted. What she really wanted to do was sing.
Through an introduction by her father's friend, Faye Wong studied music under Dai Sicong. Dai Sicong introduced her to Chen Xiaobao, the general manager of Cinepoly Records. After one meeting, Chen Xiaobao was very impressed by Faye. He gave her a contract and also changed her stage name to "Wang Jingwen" and gave her an English name - "Shirley Wong".
In November 1989, the album "Wang Jingwen" was released. At that time, Faye Wong concealed her personality under the standard packaging of Hong Kong artists. She sang pure uninspired Cantopop songs. Although this album reached gold record sales and also won her the Bronze Award for "Female Newcomer Artist", behind the scenes were undercurrents of conflict between Faye Wong's personality and Hong Kong's entertainment industry.
Run Away, Come Home
After "Wang Jingwen", Faye Wong's next two albums did not receive much response in the market. In 1991, her newly appointed manager Leslie Chan thought that Faye was out of place in Hong Kong and sold her rights to Taiwan's Rock Records for 2 million Hong Kong dollars. In a fit of anger, Faye left for the United States to study music. She also defiantly tore up the Rock Records contract while she was in the United States. While she drifted away, Faye absorbed more influences from Western music, but her career had fallen on tough times.
During New Year of 1992, Faye Wong called her teacher Dai Sicong to send him New Year's greetings. Dai Sicong persuaded her to come back and negotiate with Cinepoly and helped her return to Hong Kong. That year, Faye met Katie Chan, the manager who would change her life.
With the help of Katie Chan, Faye Wong changed her English name to "Faye Wong" and released the album "Coming Home". With the title song "Fragile Woman" (a cover of Miyuki Nakajima's 'Rouge'), Faye Wong became a household name. That year, she won RTHK’s  "Golden Song" Award and she joined the ranks of first-line female singers.
No Regrets
In 1993, Faye Wong and Dou Wei had fallen in love. Dou Wei's influence on Faye was undeniable, both in her music and personality. That year, Faye  released the album "No Regrets".  Faye Wong's lustrous voice also began to take shape. The Mandarin version of the title song "No Regrets" was written by Faye herself. These lyrics were regarded by fans as a true portrayal of who Faye was. "No Regrets" swept Hong Kong’s 1993 awards at Jade Solid Gold and RTHK for best original song and other awards. Faye also won the "Most Popular Female Singer Gold Award” at Hong Kong Commercial Radio’s award ceremony.
Cold War
Faye Wong, who was deeply in love, soon released the album "One Hundred Thousand Whys". In this album, Faye was no longer willing to be passive. She became more involved in the album production process, including styling, cover concept, etc.  "Tempted Heart" was also the first time Faye had composed music. The song "Lau Fei Fei" expressed her eagerness to break free of restraints. The Cantonese cover of "Silent All These Years" by Tori Amos was adapted by Lin Xi and became Faye Wong's classic. The release of this album caused a sensation in the stagnant Hong Kong music industry and also made Faye understand more than ever that if music does not come from the depths of the soul, it will not have long-lasting vitality at all.
Farewell to Wang Jingwen
In June 1994, Faye Wong gave up her stage name "Wang Jingwen" and used “Faye Wong” to release the Cantonese album "Random Thoughts". The subversive nature of this album was displayed on the cover with incomplete Chinese characters and phrases such as: "no image" and "no words".
In this album, she boldly incorporated European elements in songs such as "Dream Person" which was a cover of "Dreams" by the Irish band The Cranberries. "Know Oneself and Each Other" and "Random Thoughts" were covers of the Cocteau Twins, a post-punk band. But at the same time, it also triggered some criticisms about her "copying".
It is also worth mentioning that "Pledge" was a song composed by her and Dou Wei, and Faye wrote the lyrics. The bold lyrics revealed her determination about their relationship with a hint of uncertainty.
Please Myself
In December 1994, with the release of "Please Myself", Faye Wong was responsible for the concept of the album cover. The Hong Kong version of the album is pink with only four small characters "Please Myself" in the center. "Float", composed by Zhang Yadong, was the first collaboration between him and Faye. "Exit" was written by Faye - "I heard that you will have an affair when you are forty years old" - and even predicted the breakdown of her subsequent marriage with Dou Wei.
One side smiles innocently, one side sees through it all
Also in 1994, Faye Wong made her first entry into the Taiwan market. That year, she released the Mandarin albums "Mystery" and "Sky" in Taiwan. As an initial exploration of the Mandarin market, "Mystery" had a rather conservative style, but its title song "I'm Willing" was enormously successful. "Sky" was released in November and did not follow the "Mystery" formula of adapting Cantonese songs into Mandarin. The songs were basically all original creations by local Taiwanese musicians, including "Chesspiece", "Sky", "Angel", and "Reserved". They were all big hits.
These two Mandarin albums were produced by Taiwanese musician Yang Minghuang. It is a pity that he died in a car accident in 1995.
First Concert
At the end of 1994, Faye Wong held the "Most Exciting Concert" at the Hung Hom Coliseum in Hong Kong for 18 consecutive nights. Faye wore sunglasses, long sleeves, danced freely, and jumped randomly. The concert was perceived as perplexing. The atmosphere was definitely subversive in comparison with typical Hong Kong performances at that time. But the audience still went crazy for it. In the corner of the stage, Dou Wei played the drums and flute from time to time. Faye sang "I'm Willing", "Pledge", "Exit", etc. She was firmly seated on the throne of the Heavenly Queen.
Teresa Teng Psyche
Teresa Teng opened the door to Faye Wong's music world and Faye has always had special feelings for her throughout her life. In 1995, coincidentally before Teresa’s death in May, Faye recorded an entire cover album of Teresa’s old songs "The Decadent Sound of Faye". During the recording process, the bad news of Teresa’s death was broken. Faye burst into tears in the recording studio. The album was released in July and the title satirized the original practice of some Mainland Chinese officials who criticized Teresa Teng's songs and condemned her music. All 13 songs were covers of Teresa Teng. Unlike Teresa Teng's gentle and sweet style, Faye's interpretation was more bold and ethereal. After the re-arrangement, "Wishing We Last Forever" has also become one of Faye Wong's own classic songs.
Lost Track
Faye Wong's alternative road was getting more and more clear.  In 1995, she released the Cantonese album "Di-Dar". The titles of all the tracks in the album were two-characters [syllables] (such as "Di-Dar"). The lyrics of 9 of the Cantonese songs were written by Lin Xi. Faye Wong composed two songs "Di-Dar" and "Vacation". "Untitled" and "Lost Track" were composed by C.Y. Kong and had a Middle Eastern flavor. "Ambiguous" was a cover Tracy Huang's "Love in the Snow" and it became the most well-known award-winning song from this album. In the MV of "Vacation", Faye Wong is doing nothing in a messy room, revealing a deep sense of desolation and restlessness. On the cover and album booklet, her hairstyle and clothing are set off with a butterfly background, which was very gorgeous. “Di-Dar” is also Faye Wong's last Cantonese album to date.
Fuzao
The Mandarin album "Fuzao" released in 1996 is full of provocative elements. On the cover, Faye Wong does without the heavy makeup of the female artists at the time. She covered her eyes, ears, and mouth to imply the idea of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".
This was the first time that Zhang Yadong produced a record for Faye Wong. He was responsible for half of the songs. Dou Wei was also responsible for three songs. She had covered the Cocteau Twins in the past and this time she collaborated with them for the first time. They composed two songs for her: "Disappointment" and "Divide". In this album, there is not one single commercial song and the overall atmosphere is cohesive. But for that era, this album deviated too far from the traditional style of the Chinese music industry, resulting in low sales. But its groundbreaking achievement has been praised abroad. Therefore, Faye Wong appeared on the cover of Time magazine. To this day, this album is still highly respected by die-hard Fei fans.
Toy and Help Yourself
In 1997, Cinepoly released two EPs "Toy" and "Help Yourself". The songs included were Faye Wong’s last 10 Cantonese songs recorded for Cinepoly in 1996. Because Faye was pregnant and got married, it was not possible for her to promote. In addition, her contract with Cinepoly expired. The songs were split up and published in two separate EPs to compete with her EMI release. For the cover of “Toy", the photographer went all the way to Beijing to take pictures of Faye. At that time, she had a big belly and a smile on her face. Faye Wong, soon to be a new mother, was overjoyed on the cover. Chan Fai-young showed off his talents for the first time as the composer of "Undercurrents". Later, Anthony Wong also covered this song.
The Beginning of the EMI Era
In 1997, after giving birth to Dou Jingtong, Faye Wong officially signed a contract with EMI for 60 million Hong Kong dollars. Faye requested no more Cantonese albums. In the same year, her first Mandarin album under EMI was released -  "Faye Wong".
In this album, Zhang Yadong produced three songs, "You’re Happy (So I'm Happy)", "Bored" and "Nostalgia". Due to the lack of Cantonese songs, along with the album being released during the Asian financial crisis, the sales in Hong Kong were not satisfactory. But it sold more than 500,000 copies in Taiwan. In the same year, Cinepoly released a compilation of Faye’s old songs and the sales even surpassed that of "Faye Wong". Compared with her previous album "Fuzao", the commercial flavor of this record also surprised some music critics.
Sing and Play
At the 1998 Spring Festival Gala, Faye Wong and Na Ying sang "Meet in 1998" and made this song a huge hit. In fall of the same year, Faye released the album "Sing and Play". The overall style was much more lively than her previous album and her vocal style also switched from the previous languid style to using operatic, vibrato, falsetto, and other tones.  Faye composed music again and wrote "Emotional Life", "Face", and "Child". "Child" is also the first song that she and Dou Wei dedicated to their daughter.
"Sing and Play" was quite a groundbreaking record. It is the first Chinese pop album recorded using HDCD technology. On the cover, Faye Wong's sunburn makeup style also triggered a wave of imitations.
Scenic Tour
During the Christmas period of the same year, Faye Wong once again held  concerts at the Hung Hom Coliseum in Hong Kong. She also began a large-scale tour in Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other cities.
Dou Wei joined the band and Faye Wong on stage. Under the hazy stage effects and lights, Dou Wei was raised up on a platform while playing the drums and caused the audience to cheer again and again. It was similar but also very different from the sight four years prior.
Around the time of her Guangzhou concert, Faye Wong's mother passed away. In this year, tension in Faye and Dou Wei’s relationship gradually increased. The media broke news that the two had quarreled in a hotel. "Scenic Tour" was also the last collaboration between Faye Wong and Dou Wei.
Only Love Strangers
In the song "Exit", Faye Wong once sang: "I heard the world will end in 1999".
1999 arrived and the world did not end. But her marriage with Dou Wei did. In that same year, the release of "Only Love Strangers" caused the media to endlessly speculate on whether this had something to do with "old love is too sad". Although her relationship with Dou Wei broke down, Dou Wei's "brother-in-law" Zhang Yadong was still a regular member of Faye's album production team. Their overall chemistry continued without missing a beat and the opening song "Last Blossom" is one of Faye's breakthroughs. In this song, she used the distortion technique for the first time and conveyed a desperate mentality about the fear of love. She also sang the theme song "Eyes on Me" for the Japanese video game "Final Fantasy VIII" and entered the top ten chart in Japan. She also became the first Chinese singer to hold two consecutive concerts at the Tokyo Budokan.
Fable
In 2000, a new century was beginning but the apocalyptic plot had not yet dissipated. Faye Wong released "Fable" which was a big step for her as a concept album. However, due to the needs of the commercial market, it did not achieve its ultimate goal. The record is divided into two parts. The first five "fables" integrated Faye's compositions, Lin Xi's lyrics of mythology, literature, film and religious ideas, and Zhang Yadong's arrangements. The MVs were also full of a strange and mysterious atmosphere. Although the concept of the first five songs on the album were cohesive and flawless, the last five (and two Cantonese songs) moved closer towards commercialization. As a result, fans were clearly divided into two factions on this album. Some expressed pity -  if all 10 songs were in the style of the first five songs, the entire album would have become a classic of pop music.
However, due to the high quality of the songs, "Love Letter to Myself" ("Book of Laughter and Forgetting” in Mandarin) still became hot in KTV to no surprise.
Faye Wong 2001
In 2001, Faye Wong and Nicholas Tse's romance became the focus of media attention.  Faye also began to explore the Japanese market with the filming of a Japanese TV drama "Love From A Lie" for Fuji TV.  She sang the theme song "Separate Ways".
In that same year, she released her last album under EMI, which had the same name as her first EMI album: "Faye Wong".
This time, Faye tried to collaborate with musicians from all over including Singapore’s Tanya Chua, Taiwan’s Wu Bai and Deep White, the Mainland’s Jin Wulin, and Hong Kong’s Anthony Wong. Nicholas Tse’s "Vertigo" was also written for her. This album can be regarded as Faye's most diverse in genres. After the album was released, the sales were high and she charted in Japan at No. 14 on Oricon. In October and November, Faye once again held concerts in Japan in Osaka and Tokyo.
To Love
In 2002, Faye Wong signed a contract with Sony Music for four albums, and released a new album "To Love" in 2003. In this album, Faye gave up her attempt to work with Hong Kong musicians. She and Zhang Yadong were the primary producers.
She wrote four songs "To Love", "Leave Nothing", "Darling Sunshine", and "April Snow". Zhang Yadong also contributed "Night Makeup" and "Smoke" with a strong electronic style. Faye turned her attention to the Swedish singer Sophie Zelmani with a cover called "Passenger". As with the previous album, this album also included a Nicholas Tse song called "MV".
With the exception of the rock style of "To Love", the arrangement and direction of the overall record transformed from the gorgeous and colorful EMI period to an introverted and lucid style which seemed to indicate that she no longer had intentions of fighting against the music and entertainment industry.
Last Tour
At the end of 2003, Faye Wong held eight consecutive "Faye Extraordinary" concerts at the Hung Hom Coliseum in Hong Kong. From 2004 to 2005, she held concerts in Shanghai, Xi'an, Beijing, Hangzhou, Taipei, Guangzhou and other cities. Although no new albums were released, Faye was more active in movies. She starred in "Chinese Odyssey 2002", "Leaving Me Loving You" and "2046" one after another. She also sang on the soundtrack of "Chinese Odyssey 2002" and the theme songs of "Hero", "I Love You" and the TV drama “Demi Gods and Semi Devils". At the beginning of 2004, Faye Wong and Nicholas Tse's love affair was finally ending, after a period of separation and reunion.
No More Appearances
In 2004, Faye Wong and Li Yapeng's relationship began quietly. Faye remained silent about her relationship status as always. At the end of May 2005, Faye’s manager Katie Chan stated to the media that Faye had begun an "indefinite rest" and Zhang Yadong also revealed to the media that "she had no plans to sing anymore." On May 27, 2006, at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Faye Wong gave birth to her second daughter, Li Yan. In August, Li Yapeng revealed on his blog that his daughter was born with a cleft palate. In order to help more babies, Faye Wong and Li Yapeng established the "Smile Angel Foundation". The well-rested Faye once again wrote a song - "Smiling Angel" and had Lin Xi fill in the lyrics. It was dedicated to her daughter and used as the theme song of the foundation’s launch.
Farewell
From 2008 to 2009, Faye Wong performed twice on stage. The first was on May 18, 2008. She participated in a disaster relief benefit organized by the Central Government to raise funds for the Sichuan Earthquake. She sang "Wishing We Last Forever" with Eason Chan, Faith Yang, and Ah Niu. The second time was on May 8, 2009, Faye participated in the rehearsal of a large-scale performance at Famen Temple in Shaanxi. Faye wore a white dress with light makeup and sang with her hands clasped. Unfortunately, the official performance was cancelled due to weather conditions. No one knows if this was her farewell to singing and we will have to wait and see.

The Best Movies of 2020
https://ift.tt/34YpJ4d
Thank goodness that’s over, right?
To say 2020 was a challenging year is like announcing the Hindenburg had a rough landing. In a period that’s transformed how billions live their lives, there isn’t one person, family, business, or industry that wasn’t impacted significantly by upheaval. And that includes going to the movies.
Just 12 months ago, moviegoers were turning out by the millions to see their favorite space adventures in theaters. Now they’re watching them, and everything else, on streaming. It’s an astonishing journey we’ve detailed further here, but even if our relationship to how we experience films is changing, the fact remains cinema is as vital a form of escape and inspiration as ever. And even in 2020, as Hollywood studios largely abandoned multiplexes to fend for themselves, there also remained excellent motion pictures. Some were released on Netflix, some experimented with premium video on demand, and a rarified few still entered theaters.
Here’s 25 of them.
25. Host
This Zoom horror movie, completed from start to finish in 12 weeks during the middle of a pandemic, might be the movie that sums up 2020 better than any other. But it should also be noted that it’s genuinely very good. The feature debut of Rob Savage runs at just 57 minutes (how very 2020, as in any other year its halfway house runtime might have hurt the movie’s chances), and in that time it sees a group of friends attempt to carry out a séance over Zoom. However, something goes wrong (or is that right?) and a malign entity enters the call.
Performed by a group of women, and one man, who already know each other really well, it’s the easy shorthand of their friendship that elevates this and helps the audience to instantly care. Meanwhile it’s the ambition and inventiveness of Savage and writers Jed Shepherd and Gemma Hurley which increases the scale of this beyond a lockdown found footage movie and into territory where complicated stunt work was involved. First and foremost though, it’s scary. Like really scary. How very 2020. – Rosie Fletcher
24. Minari
There is currently a bit of controversy over the Golden Globes categorizing Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari as a “foreign language film.” If that stands, it will be a genuine shame, and a greater slight, for this is an all-American story. A semi-autobiographical reverie for its writer-director, Minari depicts a family of Korean-Americans who immigrated to the United States in the 1970s and are now trying to make it as farmers in rural Arkansas in the 1980s.
A beautiful ode to childhood, and both the hardships and joys of the immigrant experience, what’s most rewarding about Chung’s film is its quiet intelligence at working from first the perception of a child named David (Alan S. Kim), and then also from the vantage of his parents and their increasingly frayed marriage (a mutually raw Steven Yeun and Yeri Han). It even has a deep reservoir of understanding for the more complex sorrows of grandmother Soonja (Youn Yuh-jung). Minari is a sophisticated multigenerational snapshot of a distinct group of American lives, and it’s among the best films of the year, however you categorize it. – David Crow
23. Kajillionaire
Miranda July’s ethereal scammer dramedy carries the con-artist torch from Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 masterpiece, Parasite, and once again allows audiences to live vicariously through a scrappy family surviving on society’s margins. But unlike Bong’s Kims, Kajillionaire’s Dynes (Robert Jenkins and Debra Winger) are far from sympathetic; they’re poisoned by their warped take on the American Dream.
Evan Rachel Wood turns in one of 2020’s most stunning performances as their strange daughter, Old Dolio: fierce yet naïve, raised to regard all relationships as transactional and so utterly at a loss as to how to navigate her attraction to their new co-conspirator Melanie (Gina Rodriguez). Old Dolio’s roughness contrasts beautifully with the surreal wonder of July’s dreamy motifs—here, soap bubbles representing the fragility of a life that could change with one puncture.
No one could have predicted that this year would implode worse than a scam gone wrong, nor that even the most well-adjusted families would have to grapple with setting uncomfortable but life-saving boundaries with loved ones. Yet here we are, and somehow July’s hopeful story came to us at exactly the right time: We can delight in Old Dolio breaking toxic patterns, and the elder Dynes learning that letting go of something valuable can be more beneficial than squeezing the life out of it. – Natalie Zutter
22. The Assistant
One of the year’s most unassuming but devastating films is writer-director Kitty Green’s seamless foray from documentary (Casting JonBenet, Ukraine is Not a Brothel) into a classic “inspired by true events” feature. Those true events are the Harvey Weinstein scandal, as the film follows a day in the life of a low-level assistant (Julia Garner) in a prominent Hollywood executive’s New York City office. The Weinstein-like character is never directly seen, and Jane is one of many peons who sketch out the space around his considerable form, as they arrange his midday hotel reservations and restock his private stash of erectile dysfunction medication.

Yet out of the whole office, Jane is both the most valuable and the least valued: first one in, last one out, she has devoted all of her waking hours to streamlining this powerful man’s day—which includes covering over his gravest sins with regard to the pretty, impressionable young women she ushers into his office.
Every phone conversation or behind-closed-doors meeting is intentionally muffled so that Jane herself can hardly hear it, let alone the audience. These murmuring pockets invite the viewer to fill in the blanks, imagining the worst possible scenario. The film never gets explicit, but Jane’s dawning realization and horror at her complicity is unsettling enough. Even more so when her attempts to flag this unimaginably inappropriate behavior get undermined by the self-protecting hierarchy of the company. The Assistant is more character portrait than anything else, and it treats its archetypal figure with more sympathy than her real-life counterparts might have earned, but its depiction of seemingly harmless eccentricities snowballing into an unconscionable abuse of power is a must-watch. – NZ
21. His House
This Netflix original horror movie took people by surprise when it landed on the service. The feature debut from Remi Weekes, His House is a clever, nuanced political movie that leans hard into horror tropes, working both as a commentary on the treatment of refugees in Britain and as a seriously frightening ghost story. Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country) and Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London) play a Sudanese couple who escape the violence of their own country only to find themselves hemmed in by the bureaucracy and judgement of the UK. Placed in a decrepit home that they can’t leave, they are haunted by spirits they brought with them while facing the nightmare of a country that pretends to care but barely sees them as people.

The performances across the board, including a supporting role from Matt Smith, soar, and the production design is unique, haunting, and at times very beautiful. This is a powerful first film from an exciting new voice, a must-watch for genre lovers, and a showcase for a strong, if not often told, social message that talks about culture, society, and gender. It’s about the demons we see and the ones we do not. – RF
20. Emma.
Jane Austen’s fourth novel, and the last published in her lifetime, has been filmed many times. But director Autumn de Wilde’s version is the best one, perhaps because she is the first woman to helm a straightforward adaptation. Leaning into Austen’s own designs for the book, where the author mused she would “take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like,” Emma. embraces the mischievous and sardonic side of Austen’s wit, and her heroine who was gifted with being “handsome, clever, and rich” from the word go.
Filmed with supreme confidence and a sumptuous color palette of bright pastels in brighter natural lighting, Emma. is vibrant and often veers cheerfully near screwball comedy. This approach is only buoyed by Anya Taylor-Joy, who began a strong year of work with this multifaceted and exceedingly rich portrait of Ms. Woodhouse, in the most magnanimous sense. She and her director searched for “questionable intent” in the material while still crafting a warm film that bubbles with life. It also enjoys a wonderful soundtrack thanks to a collection of actual 18th and 17th century English folk songs, and a puckish score by David Schweitzer and Isobel Waller-Bridge. – DC
19. The Father
Director and screenwriter Florian Zeller’s adaptation of his own stage play stars Anthony Hopkins as Anthony, an elderly English man suffering from the onset of dementia. Olivia Colman is his daughter Anne, who is planning a move to Paris to live with her partner, and is desperately trying to find a new caregiver for her father. People drift in and out of the narrative under different names, Anthony’s spacious apartment seems to change around him and time itself seems to bend before we realize we are seeing almost all the events from Anthony’s point of view—which means that none of what we see can truly be trusted.

This makes what could have been a conventional drama about illness and memory into something brilliant and terribly heartbreaking, with Hopkins and Colman giving performances that are nothing short of titanic and Zeller’s cool, controlled direction making the emotional cost even more profound. The final scenes of this nearly perfect film will leave you devastated, even if this awful disease has never impacted your life personally. – Don Kaye
18. Sound of Metal
Sound of Metal gives us an up-close, immersive look at what it feels like to suddenly go deaf, and to realize that massive life changes don’t have to portend the end of what it means to live. Riz Ahmed is excellent as Ruben, a recovering drug addict who drums in a heavy metal duo alongside his girlfriend, singer/guitarist Lou (Olivia Cooke). The two tour the indie rock circuit in a beat-up but cozy RV that also serves as their home, but their gypsy lifestyle is upended when Ruben abruptly loses his hearing.
Director Darius Marder (who co-wrote the script with Abraham Marder) does not give into sentimentality even as Ruben moves through grief, loss, denial, anger, and self-pity, all the while clinging to the possibility that he may find a surgical way to restore his hearing. His journey also takes him to a home for deaf people in recovery (headed up by the marvelous Paul Raci, whose own real-life story involving deafness is remarkable), and eventually opens his heart and mind. The excellent sound design is the final touch on a captivating and highly original story. – DK
17. The Personal History of David Copperfield
After exposing the sheer absurdity of modern politics in films and series like In The Loop, The Death of Stalin, and Veep, Armando Iannucci found solace this year in creating this earnest, light, charming adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, David Copperfield. The film still tackles Dickens’ persistent themes of class, privilege, poverty, and human rights, although in far less scathing fashion than Iannucci is known for. Casting his project in colorblind fashion has also allowed the director to subtly modernize the piece while grounding it firmly in 1850s England.
Some of us may get a bit lost in the onrush of characters and events in this fast-paced film, as Iannucci breezes through a lot of the book’s events. But the story itself, and the multitude of vivid, colorful, oddball characters who are led by an enthusiastic Dev Patel as David, are so timeless and relevant to the human condition that only diehard loyalists to the original text may find something to grumble about. The rest of us can enjoy a delightful adaptation that we might not even know we needed. – DK
16. Bad Education
For his whole career, Hugh Jackman has been celebrated for his consummate showmanship. Whether it is as ambassador for a major superhero franchise or the song and dance man who can win Tonys at the same ceremony he’s hosting, his charm is irresistible. So imagine his delight when director Cory Finely presented him with Bad Education: the movie where his ability to ingratiate turns into something sinister and perfectly apt for the year it was released in.
Based on a 2004 New York Magazine article about the largest school embezzlement scandal in history, Bad Education plays like a dark comedy about American greed, as well as prologue for the 21st century hucksterism that was to come. Filmed with the same clinical nihilism found in Finley’s Thoroughbreds, this film is so much larger in its landscape of apathy of self-delusion. And at the center of it is Jackman’s affable Long Island school superintendent, a man who hides dark secrets and a bottomless pit of narcissism, both of which allow him to tell any lie that keeps him on top. Hence why watching his house of cards fall is pretty satisfying, especially these days. – DC
15. Small Axe
Steve McQueen’s latest effort, an anthology of short films set around Black communities in 1970s and ’80s Britain has been the source of some debate. Should these be looked at as individual films or can the work only be considered as a whole? We don’t have a satisfactory answer either, but Small Axe is as thoroughly compelling as the rest of McQueen’s work, and two films in particular, Mangrove and Lovers Rock are standouts.
Mangrove is the longest, most traditionally “feature length” entry in Small Axe. Gifted with urgent, authentic performances to tell the story of the Mangrove Nine, it’s also (like the rest of the films in the anthology) an effortlessly immersive recreation of its era, even as its subject matter resonates uncomfortably with today’s headlines. But while the other movies that comprise Small Axe are shorter than many features, they’re no less powerful. The immensely beautiful Lovers Rock, with its haunting reggae soundtrack and beautifully filmed party scenes, serves as a reminder of so much of what we’ve lost and taken for granted in this pandemic year, and the intimacy that can be found in crowds. It’s essential viewing, and both a snapshot of a moment in time and a reminder of something else we’ve lost to this pandemic year. – Mike Cecchini
14. Tenet (READERS’ CHOICE)
In a tumultuous year, no blockbuster has had quite as much controversy surrounding it as Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The director was notoriously adamant that his film should be the one to lead moviegoers back to cinemas worldwide, a quixotic (some might say selfish) endeavor that might’ve undercut the ambition of a movie that blends the action and spectacle of the wildest James Bond movies with elements of time travel, quantum physics, and Nolan’s famed attention to detail.
But lost in all that controversy—and perhaps in its nigh-incomprehensible plot—is the fact that maybe, were the world not in the midst of a deadly pandemic, Nolan was right.
Perhaps more than any other blockbuster of the last year or more, Tenet was clearly designed with the cinematic experience in mind. Action set pieces, filmed in gorgeous locations that would be spectacular on their own, take on the quality of magic tricks as events and performances are “inverted” by the film’s central, mysterious technology.

Tenet’s ‘Inversion’ Logic Explained
By Chris Farnell
Even Nolan’s notorious penchant for emotionally distant main characters is undercut by performances from John David Washington and Robert Pattinson that bring this about as close to a buddy action movie two-hander as you’re ever likely to see from the director. Whether you ultimately view Tenet as a smarter-than-your-average thrill ride or a puzzle that can only be unlocked via repeated viewings, it still deserves, even demands, your full attention. – MC
13. One Night in Miami
Regina King has been in the business of making movies for nearly three decades. Who knew she could also be such an astonishing director? Yet with her first theatrical feature, she announces undiscovered talent in this sweltering, jubilant film that interrogates what life is like at the intersection of Black art and Black commerce in America.
With screenwriter Kemp Powers adapting his own stage play, One Night in Miami imagines a fictional account of an evening where Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), and the man who would soon be Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree) walk into a 1964 motel room. Their conversations about the challenges of Black celebrity in a world that pulls them both toward the desperate need of social equity and the more comfortable appeal of white-friendly affability, is one that is still going on to this day. But it’s told here with bombastic performances and a visual flair that is so kinetic it overcomes the admittedly stagebound limitations of the film’s conceit. – DC
12. Soul
What does it mean to have soul? How do you feed it? Joe Gardner, the Jamie Foxx-voiced protagonist of Soul, thinks he has the answer in the keys of his music, but the beauty of this latest Pixar film is it lives within the ambiguous places that aren’t be so easily defined. As yet another sophisticated offering from co-director Pete Docter, who previously co-helmed Inside Out, Soul pushes Pixar back toward its ambitious best, finding a way to convey complex ideas in an adventure with universal appeal.
With dazzling animation that leans into abstract concepts about life, death, and a weird transient state between the two, the film asks big questions in a way a child can appreciate, if not fully understand. To be sure, it’s the rare kids’ movie that gingerly suggests there is happiness in the seeming pointlessness of existence. It also benefits from ascendant music by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste on the piano. In fact, realizing Nine Inch Nails penned one of the great Disney scores might be 2020’s most pleasant surprise. – DC
11. Saint Maud
The directorial debut of Rose Glass did the festival circuit in 2019 and was due to land in cinemas in the spring. Instead it was pushed back to October in the UK, mid-pandemic. So perhaps it didn’t get the fanfare it would have garnered in a normal year. Set in a rundown seaside town, the movie sees young palliative care nurse Maud (Morfydd Clark) become obsessed with her patient Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), who is dying of cancer. After a highly traumatic incident, Maud has found God—a God she believes talks directly to her and has made it Maud’s mission to save Amanda’s soul.

Saint Maud and the True Horror of Broken Minds and Bodies
By Rosie Fletcher
A nightmarish horror of shifting perception, where bodies and minds are in conflict, this is a movie packed with indelible imagery, not least the devastating final scene. Ehle is excellent as the former dancer whose body is letting her down, but Clark is a revelation as the tiny, fierce Maud, all self-flagellation and buttoned up piety until she’s not. – RF
10. Nomadland
Utilizing both actors and real people, director Chloé Zhao (The Rider and Marvel’s upcoming Eternals) chronicles the lives of America’s “forgotten people” as they travel the West, searching for work, companionship, and community in the years following the Great Recession. A brilliant Frances McDormand stars as Fern, a woman in her mid-60s who lost her husband, her house, and her entire previous existence when the town she lived in—Empire, Nevada—vanished off the map following the closure of its sole factory.
Zhao’s film quietly flows from despair to optimism and back to despair again, all while the hardscrabble lives of its itinerant cast (many of them actual nomads) is foregrounded against stunning, if lonely, vistas from the American countryside. Nomadland shows us both the best and worst of America at once: the cruelty of a nation that refuses more and more to take care of its own, juxtaposed with the decency and compassion one can find on an individual basis. Whether the latter is enough to overcome the former is one of Nomadland’s haunting, unanswered questions.  – DK
9. Wonder Woman 1984
A movie about flying and lying (even to one’s self), Wonder Woman 1984 came onto the pop culture scene at the very end of a very bad year. For many, the film’s muddled superhero logic and lackluster third act action scenes were enough to ruin the experience. For others, including many of us, the big budget earnestness of Diana Prince won the day. The film’s delights include charismatic performances from Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig as complex antagonists Maxwell Lord and Cheetah; a breathtaking Themyscira sequence; and Chris Pine pretending to ride an escalator for the first time.
Ultimately, however, Wonder Woman 1984 warrants a spot on this list due to its unexpected thematic priority. While many storytellers use a 1980s setting as an excuse to blast Blondie (fair enough), give the costume department free rein on shoulder pads (yes, please), or to harken back to an imagined simpler time (sure, whatever), director and co-writer Patty Jenkins uses it as a way to rewrite American history.

Wonder Woman 1984: DC Comics Easter Eggs and Reference Guide
By Delia Harrington
Comics
The Best Comics of 2020
By Jim Dandy and 2 others
If the 1980s was an era that saw economic policies shifting the power from government to Wall Street, then here is a superhero flick that goes back in time to imagine a different path forward, one in which America is able to avoid the path that prioritizes the few over the many. It’s a fantasy, sure—and one that is understandably too porous for some to enjoy—but it’s a particularly cathartic one for 2020. – Kayti Burt
8. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Adapted from August Wilson’s play by director George C. Wolfe (and not quite able to escape its stage origins), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set during a heated recording session by the title artist–one of the pioneering blues singers of the 1920s–and her touring band. As tensions rise between Ma (Viola Davis) and certain band members, plus Ma and the white men, who of course own the record label, the band members find themselves at odds over the music they’re making and much more.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Ending Explained
By Tony Sokol
While Ma and the events of the story may be fictionalized, the issues that come up—race, religion, money, and art—are not just universal but as relevant as ever in terms of the Black experience in America. Davis is a supernova as Ma, and the rest of the supporting cast is just as terrific. Yet the spotlight undeniably belongs to the late Chadwick Boseman in his final screen appearance. As Levee, the trumpeter who wants to go solo, Boseman radiates rage, pain, and frustration in a performance as incendiary as it is tragic. – DK
7. Birds of Prey
Harley Quinn’s fabulous emancipation was just that—fabulous. As a fierce, funny, feminist ensemble piece with a quality cast that flipped on its head Harley’s dubious treatment at the hands of Mr. J in Suicide Squad, Harley herself, Margot Robbie, pitched the movie back in 2015. Birds of Prey shows a different side to Gotham City where a grubby underworld of people are trying to scratch together a living, and the only thing objectified in this female team-up is a bacon and egg sandwich (and what a sandwich it is).

Birds of Prey’s Marilyn Monroe Musical Scene Explained
By David Crow
Working from a script by Christina Hodson, director Cathy Yan’s film has a totally different flavor from anything that had come before from the DCEU. R-Rated, rude, and colorful, the movie sees the whole of Gotham out to get Harley now that she’s no longer under the Joker’s protection. But a young pickpocket, a stolen diamond, and Ewan McGregor’s gangster bring together a mismatched bunch in a joyful slice of anarchy that hits exactly the right notes. Superhero movies don’t get much more fun than this. – RF
6. Mank
The authorship of Citizen Kane has divided critics and film scholars for generations. So you can almost sense the glee boiling up in David Fincher as Mank wades right into the middle of it with a stylized and exquisitely crafted love letter to Herman J. Mankiewicz—and proverbial middle finger toward Orson Welles. One sympathizes, as Mankiewicz (or “Mank”) has been an unsung figure in film history: a member of New York’s 1920s generation of literary writers and journalists who bought into the allure of easy money in Hollywood but never got the credit he deserved for selling his soul.
Well, Mank attempts to return it with interest. A film that basks in demolishing Old Hollywood nostalgia, even with its black and white photography and heightened melodramatic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Mank recalls the ugly side of yesteryear, and the greed that slaughtered talent, be it for money as embodied by Louis B. Mayer, or ego as personified by the film’s vision of Welles.
Yet its elegy for Mankiewicz—portrayed with delicious self-loathing by Gary Oldman—and his generation of forgotten writers is what makes the film unexpectedly warm for a Fincher joint. As does Mank’s relationship with Marion Davies, an also overlooked movie star given spirited reconsideration by Amanda Seyfried in one of the year’s best performances. – DC
5. Palm Springs
There must be something hypnotic about the banality of time loops, because to date the concept hasn’t produced a bad movie. Harold Ramis and Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day remains the paterfamilias, and prime original day, for the form. Yet that film’s many imitators have still pushed other filmmakers toward genuine inspiration. And that may have never been truer than for Palm Springs, a millennial reimagining of Groundhog’s exploration of a romance stuck on repeat—but with an ingenious added wrinkle.
Instead of one half a potential couple being oblivious to her role in a cyclical love story, both Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) are keenly aware of their shared Sisyphean hell. Worse still, they’re also trapped at a lame wedding. The small addition has massive creative repercussions, with director Max Barbakow and company lightly critiquing the implicit ickiness in Ramis’ film, as well as providing an opportunity for a true two-hander film between Samberg and Milioti. It’s Samberg’s best work to date, but Milioti is the real revelation as the woman who is our eyes and ears into a circular existence that is both horrifying and pleasant, romantic and exhausting. Like the film as a whole, this is a delightful nightmare. – DC
4. Da 5 Bloods
Hollywood’s great reckoning with America’s involvement in the Vietnam War may never truly end. But few films have gotten to the human cost of the war that lingers long after soldiers came home quite as emotionally as Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.
Alternately a heartfelt tale of friendship and identity amidst shared hardship and a raucous action movie, effortlessly connecting the dots between the racial politics of the Civil Rights era during the Vietnam War and the Black Lives Matter movement of today, Da 5 Bloods may be the most clear-sighted movie about the conflict ever made. The film’s emotional power is bolstered even further by a rousing Terence Blanchard score, as well as a significant chunk of Marvin Gaye’s era-defining masterpiece album, What’s Going On.
Even at 156 minutes, Da 5 Bloods never overstays its welcome. Despite an action heavy third act that may seem incongruous with some of the film’s weightier themes, its characters are so powerful, and the performances so unforgettable, that nothing is ever lost. And while each of the film’s five leads (not to mention Chadwick Boseman’s almost ethereal “Stormin’” Norman Holloway, seen only in flashback) are terrific, none are more haunting than Delroy Lindo’s manic, tortured turn as Paul, a soldier still bearing the scars of war, both foreign and domestic. – MC
3. Promising Young Woman
Carey Mulligan plays against type in this candy colored fable of an avenging angel who goes to nightclubs and pretends to be wasted in order to shame the men who try to take her home and take advantage. It’s an ultra modern take on the rape-revenge subgenre with a very female gaze. Mulligan’s Cassie is a delicate clothes horse with multicolored nails who works in a coffee shop and lives with her parents—her brand of revenge is specific, personal, and highly female.
Despite the dark subject matter, this is an unashamedly fun film (um, until it’s not) with a killer soundtrack. It’s the directorial debut of actor Emerald Fennell (most recently seen playing Camilla in The Crown), who also wrote the picture, and she reveals an extremely distinctive style. A starry supporting cast also deliver uniformly excellent performances, including Bo Burnham, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Adam Brodie, and Alfred Molina, which makes this feel big budget glossy.

But it’s Mulligan’s movie. It’s impossible to take your eyes off her, and she owns the screen as a powerful warrior, a vulnerable soul, and a heroine for our times. – RF
2. The Invisible Man
A Blumhouse redo of a Universal classic from the bloke who wrote Saw, on paper this wouldn’t be an obvious contender for a year-end best list. But then The Invisible Man isn’t an obvious movie. As the last film many saw at the cinema before lockdown landed, The Invisible Man is an incredibly smart take on the H.G. Wells story, which focuses not on the scientist who creates the suit that makes him invisible, but the woman he uses it to terrorize.
He may be “the guy who wrote Saw,” but writer-director Leigh Whannell has proved himself incredibly adept at a certain kind of action/horror with this and Upgrade—both include thrilling sequences of people who aren’t in control of their own bodies. Here it’s Elisabeth Moss who is being stalked by her abusive ex-boyfriend. Whannell uses the conceit to great effect: It’s a movie about gaslighting, which has the audience scanning the peripheries of the scene at all times, keeping us on edge, just like Cece, and wrong footing us all the same.
Top notch performances and serious subject matter handled with panache make this a scary standout for any year. We can’t wait to see what Whannell does with The Wolfman… – RF
1. The Trial of the Chicago 7
“The whole world is watching.” That is the chant shouted throughout Aaron Sorkin’s second directorial effort, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and it echoes in our 2020 ears like the Ghost of Christmas Past. A little more than 50 years ago, the United States government put eight men on trial for protesting the Democratic National Convention—and the Vietnam War its presumptive nominee supported. This legal circus occurred even though the riot that broke out during the protests was started by the police. It would be understatement to note it all plays as eerily prescient today.
Beyond the loaded political subtexts though, the movie’s placement on this list reflects what happens when Sorkin’s screenplays achieve their greatest alchemy: With words being deployed in a courtroom as ruthlessly as batons were on a summer night in Chicago, each dialogue exchange in Chicago 7 is kinetic. The film defies the seemingly stagey quality of its legal setting, and not by just inserting flashbacks to a recreation of the 1968 riots (though they’re here too), but by turning verbose monologues into thrilling set pieces. Defense attorneys duel prosecutors; defendants defy a shockingly biased and corrupt judge; and believers in the system, like Sorkin himself, stare into the abyss of what happens when it fails.
All of these elements amplify the film’s vision of protestors from “the far left” running into the hard wall of mainstream resistance to change. It’s a showcase for Sorkin, his editor Alan Baumgarten, and the whole ensemble, particularly in one grueling sequence between Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Bobby Seale and Frank Langella as Judge Julius Hoffman. The Trial of the Chicago 7 can be horrifying in places, and yet always engrossing. And most miraculously of all, it’s never cynical. That might be why it electrifies most at this moment. – DC
Other movies receiving balloted votes (in descending order): Relic, The News of the World, Uncle Frank, Never Always Sometimes, Class Action Park, Freaky, The Way Back, The Old Guard, Synchronic, The Devil All the Time, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Enola Holmes, Shirley, Unpregnant, Wolfwalkers, Rebecca, On the Rocks, MLK/FBI, Scare Me, The Lodge, Happiest Season, I’m Your Woman, Bill & Ted 3, The Platform, Monsoon, Possessor, Ordinary Love, Miss Juneteenth, Athlete A, How to Build a Girl, The Vast of Night, What the Constitution Means to Me, Muscle, Calm the Horses, Color Out of Space, Eurovision, Another Round, Misbehaviour, The Boys in the Band, Borat 2, Extraction, Midnight Sky, Zappa, The Half of It, Greenland, 7500, Onward, The Wolf of Snow Hollow, The Nest, Bad Hair, Capone, Project Power, New Order, The Gentlemen, Lost Girls, The 40 Year-Old-Version.

Here’s the Right Way to Plan Iceland Trip
Icelanders like to joke that during the course of their adulthood they’ll have no less than seven careers—oftentimes two at once. In fact, being busy is such a part of the national identity, Icelanders’ most common greeting roughly translates to: “So, busy as always?”
For Herdis Fridriksdottir, who left a career in education to get busier working in tourism, the answer isn’t just “yes.” It’s “more than ever.”
Since 2012, Iceland’s visitor numbers have been growing an average of 32 percent each year. The country gets seven visitors for every local, with travel now contributing more than 10 percent to gross domestic product, making it Iceland’s largest economic sector.
If “overtourism” has become a red flag for the global travel industry, Iceland is a prime example. Some sites are at risk of closing, or have closed, like Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon featured in a Justin Bieber music video. (Even if tourism numbers are forecast to drop by about 16 percent in 2019 after the recent bankruptcy of Wow Air.)
That is, of course, if you’re going where everyone else goes.
“People feel that all of Iceland is crowded … but that’s like saying a rock concert is fully booked when there are 50 people in the front row and no one in the back,” says Runar Karlsson, head guide for Borea Adventures, one of a handful of outfitters helping to redistribute tourist traffic to the country’s less-known corners. Rather than have his visitors bolt up in pricey Reykjavik hotels and crowd around the Golden Circle on day trips, he focuses on Iceland’s stunning Westfjords, which receives only 12 percent of the country’s peak-season tourist traffic.
So if you don’t also want to fall into what Karlsson characterizes as influencer-inspired Instagram bucket lists (Bieber, again) and the lopsided marketing of a handful of key sites, here’s how to do Iceland right.
Instead of focusing on landscapes, focus on locals
“Four years ago, Instagram had 800,000 photos with the Iceland hashtag,” says Gunnar Gunnarsson, a professional photographer who focuses on Iceland’s frigid landscapes. “Today that number is over 12 million.” He says it’s the result of cash-poor operators and freebie-seeking influencers creating an arbitrary (and sometimes destructive) echo chamber of “Insta-famous” and “must-visit” sites.
All this overlooks Iceland’s delightfully quirky culture. The people you meet here can be just as memorable as those ethereal fjords—and Fridriksdottir’s family-run business, Understand Iceland, is making a name for itself by setting up culturally immersive adventures, such as dying wool and knitting with village women.
Instead of international white-glove operators, support small businesses
Even though most white-glove travel agencies use the same inbound operators to source their “exclusive” experiences, small Icelandic tourism outfits are surprisingly high-quality and easy to reach online. The only catch is that they’re often buried under a few pages of Google search results.
Take Midgard Adventure, a mountaineering company based in the unassuming southern township of Hvolsvollur. Book its Super Jeep tour of the Icelandic outback’s hidden gorges and glaciers, and you may well end up at your guide’s house for lamb stew.
Additionally, both Local Guide and From Coast to Mountain deliver on their names, focusing on staffers’ childhood favorite sites such as the great ice caves of Vatnajokull National Park. The Wilderness Centre also tops many insiders’ lists for its unique hikes, which can culminate at one-of-a-kind accommodations such as traditional turf homes from the early 1800s.
Instead of transferring to Reykjavik, go south
Though few first-timers realize it, most flights to Iceland land in Keflavik, an hour southwest of the country’s biggest city. About that: Reykjavik is roughly the same size as Rochester, Minn. It’s charming, but skippable.
If seeing the capital is non-negotiable, cap your time there at 25 percent of your visit. Otherwise, head straight to the south coast, where you can stay in contemporary chalets, chic farmhouses, and small hotels. “Most of the tourists I see spend four, five, even six hours a day driving to and from Reykjavik to walk on the glacier at Solheimajokull or visit the lagoon at Jokulsarlon. It completely baffles me,” says Icelandic expedition leader Sigurdur Bjarni Sveinsson. Plus, when you’re based in the countryside, you don’t need to sign up for a northern lights tour—you can just look out the window.
Instead of dining in the capital, eat in the countryside
“The eastern region has really started to come into its own as a culinary destination,” says Carolyn Bain, co-author of the Lonely Planet guide to Iceland. Case in point: Kari Thorsteinsson, the chef de cuisine at Dill in Reykjavik, the first restaurant in Iceland to receive a Michelin star, is about to open a new concept in Egilsstadir that will focus on local product and wild game. The area is also home to restaurants such as Skriduklaustur and its haute twists on Icelandic home cooking, the Japanese-inspired Nord Austur, and Vallanes, which sources high-quality grains and more than 80 varieties of vegetables from its own farm.
Instead of Gullfoss, choose any other waterfall
A photo of Gullfoss, or “Gold Waterfall,” aptly positioned along the Golden Circle, is one of the snaps most tourists are compelled to tick off their bucket lists, despite the fact that there are over 10,000 chutes scattered around the country. Two worth prioritizing are the bundt cake-shaped Dynjandi in the Westfjords and Aldeyjarfoss, with its organ-pipe basalt columns; they see a fraction of Gullfoss’s tourist traffic and are just as photogenic, if not more so.
Instead of Blue Lagoon, visit the Retreat
There’s a certain Disneyland quality to Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s famous silica-rich swimming experience. An entrepreneur’s vision turned the boiling runoff from a geothermal power station into what’s now essentially an expensive, scenic bath with a swim-up bar (entrance starts at $59). It’s so popular, it’s inspired similar commodified experiences at Fontana hot springs and the (not-so-) Secret Lagoon.
If you’re dead set on checking out the main attraction, beat the crowds by booking into Iceland’s only true five-star hotel, a Brutalist enclave of graciously appointed rooms called the Retreat. Its sprawling spa offers access to a private portion of the Blue Lagoon, the restaurant has an expansive wine cellar, and its guides take guests on tailor-made outings through mossy fields and jagged beaches nearby.
Another approach: Head to one of Iceland’s many dramatically sited municipal pools, like Hofsos in the north or Seladalur in the east. Both are filled with soothing, mineral-rich spring water and command an entry fee of less than $9.
Instead of planning a long layover near the airport, fly farther afield
IcelandAir’s free extended layover program has been a huge contributor to the country’s tourism growth. But short stays needn’t be kept to a tight radius of the airport—particularly now that ample domestic flights have made it easy to get to the remote northeast in just 45 minutes. Here’s the long weekend itinerary, doable either as a series of guided day trips or as a self-guided road trip.
Carve a triangle from Akureyri over to Myvatn’s bizarre collection of earthen anomalies (alien lava fields, volcanic craters, and steaming earth), then up to the adorable port village of Husavik for whale watching. If you have a pinch of extra time, tack on the verdant canyons of Asbyrgi or the waterfall at Dettifoss—Europe’s largest by volume.
Instead of the Ring Road, do the Western Loop
Iceland’s Ring Road is one of the most popular circuits for travelers, largely because it’s well-paved and forms a neat circle around most of the country’s perimeter. However, there’s a quieter and far more picturesque way to see the island in the same amount of time—at least eight days if you want to step foot outside your vehicle.
Iceland’s Western Loop – Google My Maps
This Western Loop, as we’re dubbing it, follows the fjordlets along the western coastline up from Reykjavik, past Borgarnes, through the Snaefellsnes peninsula, across Breidafjordur’s 3,000 islands by ferry, then up into the Westfjords where dramatic, lobster claw-like outcrops snip away at the Arctic Circle. You’ll pass tiny fishing villages tucked under towering, glacially hewn mountain passes all the way to Isafjordur, where you can launch day and overnight trips into the wild Hornstrandir Reserve, home to roving arctic foxes and riotous bird colonies. Follow the craggy coast to Holmavik, where you can use a small portion of the Ring Road to close the gap back toward Reykjavik through the Golden Circle.
Conveniently, the circuit showcases some of Iceland’s best accommodations and cultural attractions, such as boutique digs in an old merchant’s home, an arctic mammal research center, and private cottages on a working ranch.
Instead of shoulder season, go in November
The most obvious way to avoid crowds anywhere is to travel during shoulder season. But in Iceland, even the tail end of summer has become swollen with booked-out hotels. This makes a strong case for visiting in the statistically quietest month: November.
Don’t shudder thinking about the weather. Iceland never promises sunshine—even in summer (it’s like that Vanessa Williams lyric, “sometimes the snow comes down in June”).
And if you’re not going to get great weather regardless, you might as well get a different perk: great lighting. Says Gunnarsson of the six or so hours the sun is up, “At the end of the year, you have a constant ‘golden hour’ glow. It’s perfect for photography.”
