Darryl Carter Review! Part 1: The New Traditional

The New Traditional by Darryl Carter With Trish Donnally Photographs by Gordon Beall Clarkson Potter Publishers, 2008

I’m venturing out of my comfort zone in both form and function. This book is from 2008, so not the freshest on the interior design scene. Additionally, the sophisticated style is far from my personal taste. Regardless, I also thought it’d be fun to have a two-part review, rating Darryl Carter’s two books. Carter is Black and male, and I’m trying to include non-white cis-female authors in my reviews. I was going to do two books in one post, but I think each one stands on it’s own. This post will address The New Traditional and next time, I’ll review The Collected Home. Welcome to Part 1. 

This large-scale, hardcover volume is fit for a coffee-table, with impressive photos and a very intimate writing style. Carter lauds a classic and calm sensibility, as he describes it, and repeatedly refers to logic. When I took a breath from the fantasy, the book did feel out-of-reach. Old money vibes. Overall, I award this book 5 out of 6 worldly geese. 

The New Traditional is a very refined aesthetic catalog guided by precise and thoughtful prose. Three subtitular key phrases span the top of the front cover: reinvent, balance, and define your home. The book really carefully details a design philosophy, pulling from anecdotal experience and the discipline of craft. Carter does an excellent job articulating this new approach to a traditional style, emphasizing in particular a mix of modern and antique. Elegant images of dining rooms and studies, in the limited color palette of warm neutrals, free from clutter or disarray, upon closer inspection, reveal a very intentional composition of old and new, worn patina and sleek smooth surfaces. 

As I mentioned, many of the rooms portrayed aren’t my particular style. Carter enjoys antique mechanical tools and centuries old figurines, for example. The rooms are also pretty sparse and formal. I still was able to enjoy him narrating countless examples of his design reasonings, what he did when a challenge presented itself, how he put a fun twist on a found piece of furniture. This book is generous in sharing knowledge, but I must be clear: he fancy. But he comes from traditional arts schooling (and law!) rather than a scrappy, DIY ambition. So yes, he’s dealing with nicer homes and nicer stuff, but the tone of the text (which can also get pretty fancy) is warm and insightful. And, I mean, the pictures look like they’re from a museum!

I think the reason I’m okay (I think) with this clearly well-funded designer’s interiors is because the written content expresses a tremendous amount of care and appreciation for the materials of the objects in the home. Carter is keen to preserve antiques and to experiment on pieces that aren’t. He hopes that any furniture piece or any room is not too precious to go unused, which is a very precious insight. He consistently encourages his readers to lean into their own style, to find harmony and use cooperation to achieve balance. I love how he playfully uses pieces outside of their intended function: using a dining table as a desk, altering a couch arm to hinge down for more lounging space, putting shuttered doors in front of windows for the illusion of a terrace. One of my favorite nuggets of his advice is to use the reverse side of a rug, as it preserves the rug and shows more muted, abstract colors which is to my taste. His philosophy does not seem to identify with excess, but rather with having a hand in making home feel like home for those living there, for the things they actually do… his clients just have money. 

Small critiques here. Firstly, most of the pictures were not on pages nearest the text describing them. Carter would paint such a vivid picture, I would think to myself, wow that would look cool, and then 20 pages later there it’d be: the picture he was describing! So I don’t know what the editing team was doing there. A second thing is a question: there were like 800 (hyperbole) ancient Chinese figurines mentioned, and I hope those clients were Chinese. Rich Westerners just hoarding artifacts from non-Western cultures is whack. More on this in Part 2, as The Collected Home goes into more depth about obtaining collections. 

Finally, I just wish someone who seems to be ridiculously classy would also care about using more sustainable resources. So many times he’d suggest using synthetics and other machine-made materials because of all the benefits that technology has come to provide (mostly durability). I feel a little sad, thinking, of course he can recommend that. That’s why people pay him a lot! For the result! Even if getting there isn’t green. 

In the end, 5 of 6 sumptuous geese for Darryl Carter: Part 1. I was very pleasantly surprised and actually enjoyed The New Traditional even though it wasn’t ‘my’ style. On the surface, Carter’s other book, The Collected Home, looks like more of the same, but I could be surprised again. Let’s see what more there is to see in Part 2!

Nestled into a tree-lined expanse behind an Arlington, Virginia, this detached studio was designed as a quiet retreat for the owner, who is a writer. 

From the builder:

 In a wooded area on the property, the angled roofline heightens the 400-sq. ft. space. Cornered Nanawall folding doors open to create an indoor-outdoor environment, with upper windows enhancing the sense of expansiveness. Organic materials, such as the cedar ceiling and floor made of weathered planks from reclaimed oak whiskey barrels, bring warmth to the contemporary space and are contrasted by the glass and dark charcoal-colored trim. Two columns of bookcases roll open to reveal a half bathroom and storage area.

Funny thing is, they’re both same collection.. but Virgil is shorter. 🤷‍♀️

Virgil I wanted to get for my birthday, but the kiosk was still closed due to covid restrictions.

But - the shop got two more sales out of my making one so it helps (mall lost 3 stores past three weeks since I last went, only one - Bealls, a department store - everyone expected. Other two were mom and pop, and of those only one really was a surprise: a popcorn stand that usually was really busy.)

Nézd Zack Snyder Az Igazság Ligája 2021 teljes film magyarul: a Zack Snyder: Az Igazság Ligája sokkal jobban néz ki, mint az eredeti változat, egységes a színvilága (sötét, komor, lehangoló), nagyobb a kontrasztja, Ben Affleck arca nem tűnik néha CGI-nek, több a hangsúly a fizikailag megépített helyszíneken és néha a természeten. A képarány más, 1.37:1, egy szűkebb téglalap a mozis formátumnál, talán legjobb az IMAX-hez hasonlít, bár otthoni körülmények között nem biztos, hogy ezt pont reprodukálni tudjuk. A vizuális világán egyértelműen látszik, hogy ez nem egy bizottság, nem egy Joss Whedon-féle mentőbrigád, hanem egy alkotó munkája, aki ráadásul egy markáns rendező: lehet Snydert utálni, cikizni, fikázni, de tényleg van egy stílusa.

Zack Synder nem Orson Welles, nem Ridley Scott, nem Sergio Leone, Az Igazság Ligája pedig nem egy fontos mérföldkő, amivel elbánt a külvilág. Hanem egy korszakra jellemző szuperhősfilm, egy olyan stúdiótól, ami megpróbálta valahogy adaptálni a Marvel-birodalom univerzumépítő megoldásait. És ami próbált megfelelni egy olyan közönségnek, amit még nem tudott teljes mértékben kiszolgálni, bár már jó úton volt felé. A DC szuperhőseit egy zászló alá csődítő Igazság Ligája ugyanis pont a Warner két kiugróan nagy sikere, a Wonder Woman és az Aquaman között készült, egy kritikai és pénzügyi felszállóág közepén. Csak ez éppen a végeredményen nem látszott meg, egy értelmezhetetlen, egyes elemeiben igénytelen, sokszor szörnyen olcsó és komolytalan produkció volt, logikai bakugrásokkal, alacsony színvonalú speciális effektekkel. Mai szemmel nézve sokkal közelebb állt a Fantasztikus négyes teljesen szétbarmolt 2015-ös fiaskójához, mint egy olyan szuperprodukcióhoz, ami egy dicsőséges új irány.

De az teljesen mindegy, hogy 2021-ben hol tart a világ, mert itt van a 4 órás Zack Snyder-vágat, a film, amire elvileg rajongók vártak, ami igazságot szolgáltat mindenek előtt a rendezőjének, és ami valószínűleg ebben a formában soha a büdös életben nem létezett volna, mozikban legalább is egészen biztosan nem. Egy gigantikus, epizódokra bontott, dagályos, néha lenyűgöző, néha pusztítóan unalmas eposz, ami leginkább azt bizonyítja be, hogy ha mindenkit ki akarunk elégíteni, akkor a végén vagy senkit nem fogunk, vagy egy 4 órás kolosszust hozunk létre.

A Zack Snyder Az Igazság Ligája című filmben Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) nem engedheti, hogy Superman (Henry Cavill) végső önfeláldozása hiábavaló legyen, ezért összefog Diana Prince-szel (Gal Gadot), akivel olyan metahumánokból álló csapatot akarnak összeállítani, amely képes lesz megvédeni világunkat egy közelgő, katasztrofális méretű fenyegetéssel szemben. A feladat még nehezebbnek bizonyul, mint, amire Bruce számított, mert az új csapattagoknak mind szembe kell nézniük saját múltjuk démonaival és le kell küzdeniük korlátaikat, mert csak így válhatnak egyedülálló hősligává. Ám mire összeáll a csapat, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) és Flash (Ezra Miller) talán már el is késett azzal, hogy megvédjék a bolygót Steppenwolftól, DeSaadtól és Darkseidtől és szörnyű tervüktől.

Zack Snyder megrendezte a valaha volt leggrandiózusabb és legepikusabb szuperhősfilmet

A rendezői változat gyökeresen más, mint a 2017-ben debütált kópia. Történetét tekintve kevéssé, viszont ritmusában, színeiben, ill. – Aquamant és Wonder Womant leszámítva – karakterábrázolásában alapvetően eltér az eredetitől. A legnagyobb élményt a saját filmmel nem rendelkező figurák bevezetése és a mitologikus múltban kalandozó részek jelentik. Cyborg és Flash – a két teljesen különböző karakter –, illetve az amazonok harcait bemutató etapok adják a film ízét. Szinte észre se venni, olyan finoman áramlanak, folynak egymásba a flashbackekben megelevenedő előtörténetek és a jelen idejű cselekmény. David Brenner (A függetlenség napja) és Dody Dorn (Memento) munkáját dicsérhetjük: ritkán találkozni ennyire kifinomult és láthatatlan vágással.

Snyder komplex filmélményt kínál, jelentős figyelmet fordít a cselekményre és a karakterekre, rendkívül finoman használja az effekteket és a montázst, de szerzőiségének legdominánsabb jegye, neo-noiros képi koncepciója is Az Igazság Ligájában teljesedik ki. Még egyszer, sajnos utoljára láthatjuk a Snyder-féle komor tónusú színvilágot DC-opuszban. Más látványfilmeknél ordas közhelynek számítana, ha a vizualitást dicsérnénk, az amerikai rendező stílusához viszont oly mértékben kapcsolódnak a szürkés-kékes színezetű képek, hogy nélkülük több rétegnyi érzelemmel volna szegényebb a film. Ezt a 2017-es változattal való kontrasztja bizonyítja igazán. Az Igazság Ligája egyéni hangvételéről mindent elárul, hogy bár sokszor pont olyan nyilvánvalóan kölcsönzi történetelemeit és díszleteit klasszikus alkotásokból, mint bármelyik átlagos szuperhősfilm, mégis mindent felülír saját stílusa. Még ha egyes jelenetekben rá is ismerünk a Star Wars-ra, a Trónok harcára vagy Az ötödik elemre, nem a megidézett művek hangulatának újraélését kínálja a film, hanem saját élménnyel gazdagítja a nézőt.

KOMOLY SZUPERHŐSFILM?

Az Igazság Ligája újravágott verziója végérvényesen bebizonyította, hogy ha létezik kiemelkedő képregényfilmes szerző, akkor az csakis Zack Snyder lehet. Az amerikai direktor készített egy tökéletes filmet. Az Igazság Ligáját ugyanis legfeljebb műfaja miatt lehet kritizálni. Christopher Nolan Batman-trilógiája után újra felmerül a dilemma, hogy vajon a filmtörténet legmanipulatívabb és legkevésbé komolyan vehető zsánerében érdemes-e olyan mélységű tartalom közvetítésére vállalkozni, mint amivel jelen alkotás próbálkozik. M. Night Shyamalan Üveg-trilógiája, a Sin City, a Joker, a WandaVízió és a Légió azt mutatják, hogy a kortárs szuperhős produkciók akcióorgiáját és erőltetett poénkodós dialógusait lemetszve a képregényfigurák megszokott közegük helyett teljesen más, parodisztikus vagy drámai kontextusban is létezhetnek. Christopher Nolan és Zack Snyder viszont ahányszor a DC alaphoz nyúlt, úgy akart komoly hangvételű, súlyos történeteket elmesélni, hogy közben megtartotta a műfaj hagyományos kereteit. Az eredmény kétséges. Akárcsak a Batman-filmek esetében, Az Igazság Ligájában is teljesen disszonáns módon mutatnak egymás mellett a filozofikus és drámai részek, illetve a monstre hosszúságú csatajelenetek. Nem mintha utóbbiak ne volnának kifejezetten igényesen elkészítve. Snyder akciószekvenciái százszorta fordulatosabbak, ill. lényegesen kevésbé giccses effektekből és realisztikusabb képekből építkeznek, mint a rivális Bosszúállók-franchise.

Saint James’ has a tradition of marking the anniversary of significant events in its history.

Today, we recall an earlier bicentennial – 200 years of Hamilton Parish, 1730-1930, celebrated 85 years ago with a gift to the church that continues in use and will symbolize the devotion of parishioners for generations to come. The following is recorded in Vestry Minutes:

Wednesday, May 21st, 1930, the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. St. George Tucker, D.D. consecrated the Memorial Chalice presented to the Hamilton Parish on the two hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Parish.

This chalice was made of silver, gold and precious stones, given by the members of the congregation, in memory of the following persons:

The Collected Home: Rooms with Style, Grace, and History

Darryl Carter is a sophisticated interior designer who champions blending the modern with the traditional. Last review, I looked at The New Traditional, in which Carter defined his style with shining examples and anecdotes from his personal experiences. Four years later, The Collected Home elaborates on Carter’s special approach to interior design, providing more concrete suggestions by room for readers who are on their own design journeys. Welcome to Part 2!

The Collected Home is successful in its generous plethora of ideas shared in an organized way, as well as its written voice which encourages the reader to follow her own preferences, goals, and intuition. In the end, the hard-cover merits 5 out of 6 treasured geese.

In the Introduction and throughout, Carter repeatedly rallies the reader to have fun during the process. Without forgetting to urge you to be thoughtful and careful in your selections, Carter promises that patience and excitement can coexist. The Collected Home is, in a way, antithetical to current DIY movements; both welcome creativity, but Carter’s approach favors discovery, planning, and listening. Reflection questions throughout the volume ask readers to consider how they use spaces from needs to style proclivity:What appliances do you use? 

Where do you anticipate needing electrical outlets? Step-stools?

How many people eat here regularly?

How often do you buy food? How do you store it?

Where do you want privacy? 

How frequently do you use things?

What’s important to access in your daily life?

I think reflection is key. Too often I see everyday people getting into interior design by coming into contact with a particular aesthetic they like and want to consume. This isn’t bad or good, but doesn’t allow for a few things to happen. 

First, you end up robbing yourself of the joy of collecting, which takes time. Of course, most interior designers recommend starting with mood boards or inspirational images to brainstorm goals and envision ideas. But if this stage is done in one afternoon, or after watching one YouTuber, the result is rarely a style you will truly treasure, let alone one that will last. Changing and growing is to be expected (and celebrated!), but Carter’s idea of home is to be an assemblage of meaningful treasures, and a gathering of all things personal. Basically, not something you can replicate from elsewhere.

The second incentive to reflect deeply before transforming your space is because often we do not listen to what the house tells you, about itself and about you. I really appreciate when designs recognize that the home has a voice, and that the particularities of the space are one-of-a-kind! This includes materials in walls, light coming from outside, proportions of doors and closets, everything! Carter insists on process as play: upcycling or reclamation, contributions from everyone in the household, and envisioning multiple possibilities can say a lot about how the home wants to be inhabited. In his price-range, Carter recommends collaborating with tradespeople, architects, and others who can provide a solution you may not have thought of-- or even how to make a limitation work better than the original idea. Does the house offer natural lighting instead of needing to buy a fixture? Would durable floors serve residents better than a fancier floor, thus allowing something else in the space to shine? Can you repurpose cabinets as children’s desks? Or reuse an old door as a pony wall for a bit of separation? Are you able to retrofit furniture into existing architectural elements, like shelving? Knowing and building relationships with craftspeople and experts will only enhance your experience creating your home.

Carter clearly has years of experience and an extensive network in his field. My main critique of The Collected Home is in being way out of league for many readers. Most people don’t collect antique Han dynasty figurines to learn how to display, or own a cast-sculpture of a carousel horse to orient in a foyer. Carter uses lots of terms I had to look up. He also shared swatches from his own paint line that he developed. He’s clearly involved in the art world and has a sophisticated relationship with artists, sculptors, and antique vendors. Furniture designer George Nakashima is featured for embedding an antique work table into a ‘frame’ to actually function (below left). It’s actually really cool. The book just seemed out-of-reach at times.

This is not for lack of encouragement and really clever ideas! I particularly like his vision to buy furniture pieces that can translate into different uses over time. A lot of projects he described leaned into a chance find at a flea market, or pre-existing architectural features, such as staircases or windows. All of his nuanced and well-trained advice is great for people who have the resources to hire experts. Any of his inspiration can be ‘dialed down’, especially because Carter included so many concrete questions to ask and possibilities to consider. For example, he acknowledges the more affordable but high-impact option of ‘try painting it’. He repeats that nothing should be too precious to use, which is an excellent sentiment. 

The Collected Home showcases impressive and high-quality interior design, exactly what it says it does. 5 of 6 sensible geese.
