Creating Celebratory Events: Discover the Top Artists for Concerts and Party Music in 2024
Tumblr media
Top Music Artist of 2024
As of March 2024, Taylor Swift reigns as the most popular music artist globally, according to Chartmetric's cross-platform performance analysis. Following her success in overthrowing Drake last year and her record-breaking Eras Tour, Swift continues to dominate the music scene.
Justin Bieber has ascended to second place, earning the title of 'the biggest male artist.' Ariana Grande has also moved up in the rankings, following the release of her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. Beyoncé makes a notable entry at number seven with two new singles released in February.
Meanwhile, artists like Drake, Eminem, and Bad Bunny have experienced a decline in their rankings, and Nicki Minaj has dropped out of the top ten.
These rankings are based on a comprehensive analysis of artists' overall reach with listeners, including listens, views, and consumption, as well as the size of their fanbase across various platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Deezer, SoundCloud, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and other social media platforms.
As an avid music enthusiast, the anticipation for the top artist of 2024 is palpable. Reflecting on the past year, Spotify's statistics revealed the global top artists: Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, Drake, and Peso Pluma. The chart-topping songs included Miley Cyrus's "Flowers," SZA's "Kill Bill," and Harry Styles's "As It Was."
The musical preferences of Roxbury High School students provide a microcosm of diverse tastes. While some, like Junior Enzo Bianchi Olivera, remain steadfast in their loyalty to artists like Eminem, others like Sophomore Avery Shluker predict changes in their top artists due to evolving musical interests or concert experiences.
As we edge closer to 2024, the landscape of popular music is set to shift. Elizabeth Riccui, for instance, predicts Taylor Swift will maintain her top spot on her personal playlist. The release of new albums plays a significant role in an artist's popularity. Notable upcoming releases include J. Cole's "The Fall Off," Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign's "Vultures," Usher's "Coming Home," Jennifer Lopez's "This Is Me…Now," and Tyla's self-titled album. The Weeknd's cryptic Instagram post has also sparked speculation about a new album in 2024.
While the future top artist of 2024 remains uncertain, the anticipation builds as we consider past favorites, upcoming releases, and the ever-evolving tastes of music lovers worldwide.
I hope that so far you have learned what music you can play at your party or even prepare in advance to send out a party event invitation. We have discovered that sending an event in advance helps your friends plan in advance making sure that your event has the maximum number of guests. Since, we know that 2024 has been pretty busy for all of us already.
As the 2024 Grammy Awards draw near, the music industry is abuzz with anticipation, and it appears that this year's ceremony might just be a celebration of female talent. Billie Eilish, a favorite of the Recording Academy and already a proud owner of seven Grammy awards at the tender age of 22, is once again in the spotlight. Her haunting ballad "What Was I Made For?" from the "Barbie" soundtrack has captivated audiences and critics alike, earning her five Grammy nominations, including two in the highly coveted Big Four categories: Record of the Year (ROTY) and Song of the Year (SOTY).
Eilish's poignant exploration of identity and self-reflection in "What Was I Made For?" has resonated deeply with listeners, making her a strong contender for both ROTY and SOTY. The song's introspective lyrics, combined with Eilish's emotive delivery, have once again showcased her ability to connect with audiences on a profound level.
But Eilish is not the only female artist poised for a triumphant night. Taylor Swift, a twelve-time Grammy winner, is also expected to shine brightly at the ceremony. Swift has been nominated for ROTY and SOTY for her hit "Anti-Hero," a track that has dominated charts and captured the zeitgeist with its candid exploration of self-doubt and vulnerability. The song's relatable lyrics and catchy melody have solidified its place as a standout track of the year.
In addition to her nominations for ROTY and SOTY, Swift is also in the running for Album of the Year with her critically acclaimed album "Midnights." The album, which marks a return to Swift's pop roots, has been praised for its introspective storytelling and lush production. With its commercial success and critical acclaim, "Midnights" is a strong contender for the night's top honor, and many industry insiders believe it could very well be Swift's moment to shine.
As we look ahead to the 2024 Grammys, it's clear that female artists are leading the charge, with Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift at the forefront. Their nominations reflect not only their immense talent and artistic vision but also the evolving landscape of the music industry, where diverse voices and perspectives are increasingly being celebrated. As a professional music journalist based in Chicago, I've witnessed the city's vibrant music scene embrace and champion female artists across genres. It's heartening to see this trend reflected on the global stage at the Grammy Awards.
In conclusion, the 2024 Grammys are shaping up to be a night to remember, with Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift poised to take center stage. Their nominations are a testament to their artistry and the impact of their music. As we eagerly await the ceremony, one thing is clear: it's a great time to be a fan of female musicians.

Variety described the album as “cinematic in its scope and tone as it ripples with elements of folk, jazz, pop and ambient electronica and brings in undertones of even surf, trap, grunge and AOR rock,” while the Associated Press proclaimed “SZA proves in ‘SOS’ she still a voice of this generation.” Her first ever arena tour in the US and overseas sold out in minutes and garnered similar rave reviews. The New York Times called her Madison Square Garden headlining debut “vigorous, confident, theatrical and intimate – the sort of show that manages the rare trick of feeling both vibrantly communicative and also protectively insular,” while Billboard declared that the performance “delivered a message that she’s truly made a next-level step in her career.” In 2017, SZA released her major label debut album Ctrl (TDE/RCA). Wolf Alice Cover “In the Bleak Midwinter”
Wolf Alice have released a cover of “In the Bleak Midwinter.” Today, critically acclaimed rock band Wolf Alice share their cover of “In the Bleak Midwinter,” out now via Dirty Hit/RCA Records. Initially released in 2021 as an Apple Music exclusive, the group are thrilled to share their rendition of Christina Rossetti and Gustav Holst’s classic poem with fans across all streaming platforms ahead of the forthcoming holiday season. Says Wolf Alice of the release, “we have always thought ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ was a beautiful melody and we could kind of imagine it as some kind of melancholy pop song, so with that in mind we tried a version of it sometime last year which we thought you may as well have this year too, because you can never have too many Christmas songs.” The release of “In the Bleak Midwinter” caps off an incredible run for the band this year, who supported Harry Styles for a portion of his European tour this past summer, opened for Halsey at Los Angeles’ acclaimed Hollywood Bowl and embarked on headlining tours of their own across North America, UK, Ireland, Europe, and Australia. This June, Wolf Alice also released Blue Lullaby, a companion EP containing stripped-down, lullabied versions of select songs from their Mercury Prize-nominated third record Blue Weekend. Wolf Alice are Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitar, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass), and Joel Amey (drums, vocals). It has been a decade since the band began as a duo of Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie, then later expanded to a four-piece, with Joel Amey and Theo Ellis joining the group. Since then, the band saw their 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool soar to #2 on the UK charts, their sophomore album Visions Of A Life won the 2018 Hyundai Mercury prize and received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance. Wolf Alice are also one of only a small handful of artists to be nominated for the Mercury Prize for every single album they’ve released. Blue Weekend continued the band’s stretch of success by debuting at No. 1 on the UK charts on its release and winning the Brit Award for “Best Group” earlier this year. Wolf Alice have become a beloved, formidable live act in their ten years of existence, having graced the stage of various worldwide festivals including the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, Coachella, and Governor’s Ball, in addition to selling out shows on multiple continents all over the globe. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/news/wolf-alice-cover-in-the-bleak-midwinter/

Otis Blackwell
Tumblr media
Otis Blackwell (February 16, 1931 – May 6, 2002) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist, whose work influenced rock and roll. His compositions include "Fever", recorded by Little Willie John; "Great Balls of Fire" and "Breathless", recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis; "Don't Be Cruel", "All Shook Up" and "Return to Sender" (with Winfield Scott), recorded by Elvis Presley; and "Handy Man", recorded by Jimmy Jones.
Biography
Blackwell was born in Brooklyn, New York. He learned to play the piano as a child and grew up listening to both R&B and country music.
His first success was winning a local talent contest ("Amateur Night") at the Apollo Theater, in Harlem, in 1952. This led to a recording contract with RCA and then with Jay-Dee. His first release was his own composition "Daddy Rolling Stone", which became a favorite in Jamaica, where it was recorded by Derek Martin. The song later became part of the Who's mod repertoire. Enjoying some early recording and performing success, he found his first love was songwriting and by 1955 had settled into the groove that he would ride for decades. His first successes as a songwriter came in 1956, when Little Willie John's R&B hit with the sultry "Fever" was an even bigger pop success for Peggy Lee, and "Don't Be Cruel" began a highly profitable association with Elvis Presley.
Blackwell was one of the leading African-American figures of early rock and roll, although he was not well known by the public. His own records never cracked the Top 40, yet he wrote million-selling songs for Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dee Clark and others. He also recruited other songwriters to write for Presley, such as Winfield Scott.
In the liner notes of Elvis' Golden Records (1958), Anne Fulchino, of RCA, wrote,
While sipping coffee, Steve Sholes pulled out a demonstration record of 'Don't Be Cruel' and told Elvis it was a new song written by Otis Blackwell, whom Elvis had long admired as a rhythm and blues artist. It took just a few bars to convince Presley that it was a perfect song for him, and he decided to cut it right away. Presley learned the song within minutes—he had an inherent musical sense—and in short order a great master was put on tape.It isn't often that the title of a song will create a whole new expression in Americana. 'All Shook Up' did exactly that. Youngsters and adults alike have made the phrase a common part of everyday usage. The background to the song itself is a rather interesting one. Since the huge success of 'Don't Be Cruel', Elvis had been anxious to record another song from the pen of Otis Blackwell. Eventually, Blackwell came around with 'All Shook Up' (first recorded by David Hill on Aladdin). Presley wasn't completely satisfied with the song, and with Blackwell's consent re-wrote part of the lyrics. Thus, as co-writer as well as artist, Presley produced his ninth consecutive gold record, his first in the year 1957.
During an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, Blackwell said he never met Presley in person. When he was having a contract dispute with his publishing company, he also wrote under the white-sounding pen name John Davenport. Blackwell composed more than a thousand songs, garnering worldwide sales of close to 200 million records. Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, asked Blackwell to appear in the Presley movie Girls! Girls! Girls!, for which he had written "Return to Sender", but a superstition about meeting Presley kept him from accepting.
In 1956, Blackwell gave "Don't Be Cruel" to friend Frankie Valli's group, the Four Lovers, but as they were recording it he asked to take it back and in turn gave it to the up-and-coming Presley. In exchange for this song he gave them "You're the Apple of My Eye", which became a chart hit for the Four Lovers (Billboard number 64). The song was performed on Ed Sullivan's television show that same year and was probably instrumental in at least shaping events for the group to eventually becoming the Four Seasons. A shortened version of "You're the Apple of My Eye" is also featured in the Broadway show "Jersey Boys".
As the tide of rock and roll receded, Blackwell recorded R&B songs for numerous labels, including Atlantic, MGM and Epic. In later years he was in semi-retirement, making only occasional live appearances.
In the 1980s, Blackwell toured and recorded with the Smithereens as his backing band for both live shows and studio recordings. The partnership produced two self-funded albums, "Let's Talk About Us" and "From the Beginning," which were released independently on Blackwell's ROC-CO imprint.
In 1991, Blackwell was paralyzed by a stroke. Three years later, Shanachie released the album Brace Yourself! A Tribute to Otis Blackwell, containing 15 songs written by Blackwell and recorded by the likes of Kris Kristofferson ("All Shook Up"), Blondie's Debbie Harry ("Don't Be Cruel"), the Smithereens ("Let's Talk About Us"), Graham Parker ("Paralyzed"), and Ronnie Spector ("Brace Yourself").
Blackwell died of a heart attack in 2002, in Nashville, Tennessee, and was interred in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, in that city.
Awards and recognitions
Otis Blackwell was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986 and in 1991 into the National Academy of Popular Music's Songwriters Hall of Fame. Blackwell's crowning moment came in the late 1980s when the Black Rock Coalition, a prominent organization of black rock musicians, led by Vernon Reid, the lead guitarist of the band, Living Colour, held a tribute for him at the Prospect Park Bandshell in his native Brooklyn. Many prominent musicians and singers took part including Blackwell himself, who performed an assortment of his best songs, including "One Broken Heart for Sale," "Back Trail," "Don't Be Cruel" and "Daddy Rolling Stone."
Blackwell was named one of the 2010 recipients of Ahmet Ertegun Award in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This category encompasses those who primarily work behind the scenes in the music industry.
Legacy
Blackwell was one of the greatest R&B songwriters of all time. His songwriting style is as uniquely identifiable as that of Leiber and Stoller, Chuck Berry, or Willie Dixon and helped redefine popular music in America in the 1950s. This is true even though he often collaborated with such partners as Winfield Scott, Eddie Cooley, and Jack Hammer. Blackwell was one of the most important innovators who helped invent the musical vocabulary of rock and roll at its very beginning. His works have been recorded by a host of major artists, including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Brown, the Who, Johnny Thunders, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, the Judds, Carl Perkins and Peggy Lee, among numerous others. At other times in his career, Blackwell was also successful as a record producer, having helped turn out hits for artists as diverse as Connie Francis, Mahalia Jackson and Sal Mineo.
Songs
Songs composed by Blackwell, with the performers who made them famous, include the following:
"All Shook Up" (Elvis Presley)
"Don't Be Cruel" (Elvis Presley); inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002
"Fever" as "John Davenport" with Eddie Cooley (Peggy Lee, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998; Little Willie John, Madonna, the McCoys, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Over the Rhine, and numerous other performers).
"Great Balls of Fire" (Jerry Lee Lewis); inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998
"Breathless" (Jerry Lee Lewis, X)
"Let's Talk About Us" (Jerry Lee Lewis)
"Hey Little Girl" (Dee Clark)

Fangirls Run the World... and the Music Industry
Tumblr media
If someone is asked to picture a “fangirl” in their head, they will most likely picture a “crazy,” “obsessive,” tween girl. Oftentimes, the way that fangirls are portrayed in media by television shows, movies, and comedians are inherently sexist. Fangirls are often made punchlines and the same repetitive stereotype is overused. This portrayal of fangirls is very one-dimensional and can be detrimental to young women who are passionate about their favorite artists. I’d like to dispel the negative associations pertaining to fangirls and fan culture, especially because I grew up extremely immersed in music and pop culture. I was a major One Direction fan and found a community within the fandom. I still identify as a fangirl in many aspects, and I think fangirls are the fuel that keep the music industry going.
It is often adults who look down upon fangirls and fan culture, calling them ridiculous and crazed. However, it is fangirls that hold the power in the industry. After all, they are a large deciding factor in whether an artist will be successful or not. These young women are capable of acting as an artist’s PR team, merchandise team, and marketing team all at once. Nicole Sanetero of UNLV drafted a dissertation pertaining to the power that fangirls have on the music industry, specifically One Direction fans, also known as Directioners. One Direction had a song called, “No Control,” which the fans believed should have been a single. They started the #ProjectNoControl, and got it trending worldwide. Sanetero writes, “Believing they could do a better job than the band’s management and record label in promoting the band’s album, Directioners came together to become One Direction’s own publicity and promotion team” (Sanetero, 12). The song then rose to #1 on the Billboard charts, gaining massive attention across all social media platforms, with the hashtag trending for days on end. The project also garnered the band’s attention, making them add it to their tour setlist. This is just one instance of how fangirls have control and power over social media trends. Fangirls are not given enough credit where it is certainly overdue. Because fangirl culture is associated with femininity and naivete, the power these young women have is largely unknown.
The misconception and popular ideology that fangirls are wildly naive, hormonal, young tweens is a part of a completely unfair and ever present double standard. Why is it that sports fans, a majority of them adult men, are allowed to scream, cry, wear merchandise, wait in long lines, and use social media to express their feelings over a sport, and young women fans are painted as obsessive? Sports fans and sports culture is widely accepted into mainstream culture, while young girls are often judged for loving a certain band or artist. Similarly, it is acceptable for people to camp out for multiple days outside of an Apple store for a new phone, but it is not scrutinized as much as fangirl culture. These young girls and young women are largely generalized into a group of obsessed, naive, girls, and never looked at as individuals with specific interests. I recall one day in eighth grade when my friend’s mom saw a Harry Styles poster of mine and said to my mom, “Wow I’m so glad that my daughter isn’t going through this phase.” Yes, I am not making that up.

Harry Styles - Harry Styles
Tumblr media
Well for once, I don’t know where to start.
Harry Styles used to be in the biggest boyband of the past decade (don’t roll your eyes at me, just look at the numbers). Probably one of the most sought-after British singer as of late. He had his every move scrutinised, over analysed and of course, criticised. After spending five years under the spotlight, Harry from One Direction disappeared, shot a movie with Christopher Nolan (no less) and flew to Jamaica to write his first solo album. Harry Styles is born. Well, reborn in a pink bath that vaguely seems like a reminder of wastewater. If it weren’t for the lotus necklace, I’d say he wants to be the flower growing out of muddy waters. This man is brand new.
The thing is, Harry Styles is quite an enigma. Although, you could tell by his fashion forward choices and heavy presence on stage he had been influenced by the 70′s and rock’n’roll, he was never drawn to the microphone during interviews with the band. Can’t blame him given the medias constant need for his blood. Cryptic messages on twitter, artsy photography on instagram, rumour has it he even paints, Styles isn’t your average twenty-three years old, all that was missing was an album that could showcase this to the masses.
The eponym album has dropped this May 12 at midnight worldwide after a mere month of perfectly thought-out promotion. Styles is using the very medias who chewed him out and enjoying it. Handpicked TV shows including SNL with Jimmy Fallon, a Rolling Stone cover featuring an interview by the one and only Cameron Crowe, an Apple Music Documentary and a first fully sold-out tour. The first single “Sign of the Times” was released on April 7 and sent the world in a frenzy (even Spotify couldn’t hold on). While most of the world expected a love song or a so-so pop tune, Styles decided on putting out a five minutes and forty seconds almost psychedelic rock ballad that reminds us of Bowie’s Space Oddity. A DJ’s nightmare just like Baba O’Riley back in the day, but a well played move.
The record fully produced by Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Mark Ronson, The Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran) is made of ten songs. And it is exactly what I expected it to be. Harry Styles loves music. When I say music it implies the one made by musicians with instruments not auto-tuned electronic sounds. That man is the love child of British most iconic musicians and the best bands from the West Coast. When you’ve got references like these, you’re bound to be influenced, many detractors will say “he got this riff from that song”, “he sampled this”, “he copied that”, but guess what? I’ll rather here a song that sounds a bit like the Beatles than most of what plays on the radio these days. It is what it is, Harry Styles sounds more like the seventies mixed with the Britpop era than today’s Top 40 but thank God. He’s giving us change.
The album opener “Meet Me In the Hallway” is Harry’s way of inviting us in a finger-picking guitar world. He sets an atmosphere straight on, halfway between Jeff Buckley and perhaps Cat Stevens with a touch of psychedelia. Then comes “Sign of the Times” which I believe to be the most lyrically accomplished song on the record. I’ve long thought about it, and there could be endless meanings about it, rumours have flown around. I understand why he said it felt like a first good choice. I want to discuss my theories with him. Following suit is “Carolina”. It’s sounds more like a road trip in the California desert with the “olalalalala” and the strumming guitars, but I’ll give him a pass. It’s a bit Stealers Wheel meet the Beatles funky bits. Then comes “Two Ghosts”, a song about two lovers giving themselves another unfruitful try. (”We're just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty, Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat.”) It could easily pass off as country with a touch of The Eagles' “Wasted Time”. The next track is “Sweet Creature” which was released early this week on Apple Music and got torn on the web for sounding too much like The Beatles’ “Blackbird”. Who cares.
On the second half of the record, Harry Styles brings out the big guns. His inner rockstar, the heavy guitar and full-on Mick Jagger swagger. “Only Angel” is moody, having sex in the toilets of a New York bar moody. It’s naughty Harry. “I got splinters in my knuckles crawling across the floor, couldn't you take home to mother in a skirt that short, but I think that's what I like about it”. Far from the cleaned up boyband image, Styles emerges as the twenty-three years old sex symbol he could be. “Kiwi” follows in the same vibe, it’s getting dirty “Hard candy dripping on me 'til my feet are wet, and now she's all over me, it's like I paid for it, it's like I paid for it, I'm gonna pay for this”. It’s Ramones’ like with the heavy electric guitars and drums. This one is going to be amazing live.
After indulging our need for Dirty Harry, he turns things back down with “Ever Since New York” a song he first played on SNL and apparently wrote a few years back. It’s folksy, the kind of track you’ll find in a rom-com. A nice soundtrack to feeling blue on a Sunday morning wondering why you’re waking up alone. “Woman” is right up my alley, Elton meets Roxy Music. Late night jealous guy at the piano bar. It’s atmospheric. Harry Styles’ music is atmospheric remember that. "From the Dining Table” the finale is the most intimate track. Almost acoustic, he whispers the lyrics until the song peaks up with violins (clever by the way) before softly dying down again. She left with another. (”I see you gave him my old t-shirt, more of what was once mine. I see your grin, it's all over his face, comfortable silence is so overrated. Why won't you ever say what you want to say? Even my phone misses your call, by the way.”)
Releasing the most awaited album of the year is definitely not easy. Especially not when it’s your debut album as a solo artist. People will say his music is influenced. True. You make music influenced by your taste, because you make music you actually want to listen to. He chose to avoid the easy way out. Because let’s be honest, he could have released something that would have charted quite well. He didn’t. He wants his integrity to remain, it does. Not all of the tracks will be remembered, that’s okay, that leaves room for more. And, I, can’t wait to see him in October.
The album is totally Styles. Sweet as his dimples, naughty as the twinkle in his eyes. Well done.
