Inside Brazil’s 40-Year Rise to Global Surfing Dominance

This generation of Brazilian surfers is so dominant, so undeniable, that it has earned a nickname: the Brazilian Storm.

Under a brilliant Brazilian sun, as he rode across a perfect peeling wave, the professional surfer Filipe Toledo thumped his chest and shouted toward the beach. Toledo, 27, who grew up around 250 miles west of this stretch of sand, had just won his second World Surf League championship tour event of the year. The win, in Saquarema, Brazil, cemented his place as the top-ranked male surfer in the world, and he was one big step closer to winning the men’s world championship.

On shore, thousands of fans roared. Once again, Brazilians were celebrating a Brazilian surfer’s success, and they were under a spell of collective triumph.

As recently as 10 years ago, a Brazilian win against a roster of the world’s top surfers would have been an anomaly. For decades, Brazilians had been the underdogs of the surfing world with few breakout stars. But starting in the 1990s, a combination of economic policy, a rich talent pool, a regional contest system and two men who created a long-term plan to produce the country’s first world champion changed their trajectory.

Toledo first announced his intention to become a professional surfer when he was 6. He dreamed not only of making the elite tour, but also of being alongside the likes of renowned world champions like the American Kelly Slater, an 11-time world champion, and the Australian Mick Fanning, a three-time champion. That Toledo — who is known for his ability to launch above the lips of waves, rotate and land seemingly with ease — had such outsize ambition was a stretch. The idea that a Brazilian could not only qualify for the tour, but actually win the tour — to beat out Californians, Australians and Hawaiians, who had dominated for decades — seemed far-fetched.

Yes, the young surfer was talented. Like his peers, he began competing in the regional contests that helped the current generation hone their skills and push one another to new heights. He also had the benefit of being coached and counseled by his father, Ricardo, a former national surf champion. And he was winning, a lot. But the distance between winning on home turf against other up-and-comers and consistently winning against the Slaters and Fannings of the world was still untraversed.

Professional Brazilian surfers just “didn’t have that much information or support,” Filipe Toledo said. “They were like, ‘What do I do now? Should I just train or should I get the money that I won in that event and spend it, doing a huge party, or invest it going on trips?’”

In December 2014, the unthinkable happened: Gabriel Medina of the Maresias district of São Sebastião, at age 20, became the first Brazilian to win the world title on the professional tour. He did it on the final day of the Pipe Masters event. The North Shore of Oahu erupted: Hundreds of people rushed to carry Medina to the podium; others sang the Brazilian anthem; still others waved national flags.

For Toledo and his peers, Medina’s win was the beginning of a sea change in professional surfing. After decades of pushing at the edges of the sport’s upper echelon, Brazil transformed from long shot to global behemoth. Brazilians went on to win the championship tour’s world title in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021. Last summer, a Brazilian, Ítalo Ferreira, won the first men’s Olympic gold medal in the men’s shortboard competition. And in late June in Saquarema, the semifinals were stacked with Brazilians alone.

This generation is so dominant, so undeniable, that it has earned a nickname: Tempestade Brasileira, which is Portuguese for the Brazilian Storm.

That weather system of success, however, was anything but accidental. It was the result of a confluence of factors: political transformation, economic policy and a decades-long plan to produce not only the first Brazilian world champion on this tour, but also a reservoir of talent to back it up. The plan worked.

hhhhhhhhhhh i just realized that i never take care of my other OC :’D. when i see them i just feel the need to resurrect them one by one, the first is Zena, my shark OC (not a persona).

I end up redesign her rather then redraw the old art, i added marking and change her hair style, her old design is here -> LINK. Back then Zena was a Mako shark, now she’s a hybrid between Mako shark and Tiger shark, wanted to just make her a Tiger shark but i don’t really want to remove the Mako part so yeah :D. Also i’ll make her refsheet later on X’D.

Some Fact : Kainona means sea with no restriction, its a Hawaiian name that i found when looking around, and it’s just really fit her cause she’s a surfer, also her bio is under the cut ^^, im just gonna copy paste them from her last reference post.

The Gym Leader is Jake and he uses Bug type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxr4a). Tite City: One of the entrances of this city is a huge bridge passing above Lake Imbrigenus. On it's north there is a route to Paba Town. It's the city of the second gym, the leader Riley uses Flying type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxrh5). Viridi Town: It is possible to go to Visum Island from here, surfing or on a boat. Here we can find the Day Care. For having too much trees the weather here is more humid and rains a lot in certain times of the year. Manaos City: Third Gym city. The leader Alice uses Normal type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxrm5). There's not much to do here. Acram City: Fourth Gym city. The leader Ross uses Psychic type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxroa). Here you can find the Safari Zone. Leaving the south exit you can go to Iracema Town. Agios Town: On the south exit of Ceresa you will find this city at the right of the route. Here you find the biggest market in the region. It's a small town but full of residents busy and in a hurry for their jobs. You can find various itens with NPCs here. Alba Town: On the south exit of Ceresa you will find this city at the left of the route. It's a big town but with no gym. It is famous for it's beach, full of tourists. A big statue on the center of the city is also a famous tourist spot. Pefko Town: Leaving Agios at south and surfing a little you'll find this town. Here the weather is more cold, the town is too close to Flos City but it doesn't snow here. Leaving at south, on the beach you'll find a boat that tkes you to Flos City. Flos City: Fifth Gym city. The coldest city, the snow her never melts because of Cass, the gym leader. She uses Ice type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxrt9). Leaving east, surfing, you'l find Flumine City. Flumine City: Sixth gym city. Here the houses are suspended in wood floors. The gym battles take place in the middle of the sea. The leader Marina uses Water type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxs0e). Leaving north, surfing, you'll find Palmam City. Sagitta City: Leaving Agios Town at left you'll find this city. Here you can find the Pokémon Contest. It's the seventh gym city, the leader Olivia uses Fighting type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxs2b) Palmam City: Leaving Flumine City at north you'll find this city. The hottest of all region and the eighth gym city. The leader Sean uses Fire type Pokémon(fav.me/ddkxs2n). At north there's a boat that takes you to Fernor Island. Iracema Town: Leaving Acram at south. surfing, you'll find this town. It's a tiny town with few residents. There's not much to do here. Leaving south you'll go to the route where you find Caeli City. Caeli City: The city of the Pokémon League. Before the entry you'll pass Victory Road, the biggest cave in the region. If you gathered all 8 Badges of Opalidi you'll be able to fight Elite Four and if strong enough, you'll battle the Champion. More Info will be added later.

This Awesome Easter Egg in Aquaman, if You’ve Been to Hawaii, You Must Know it!

Recently, DC, which had been lagged behind in its competition against Marvel, completely turned the game ahead by a first-rate movie, Aquaman. After being released in China, it immediately launched a wave of enthusiasm. The box office broke through 650 million in just 3 days. The Douban score is 8.2, and scores on other platforms are up to 9 or above.

Double gains in public praise and the box office, this movie was seen as "the best superhero movie of 2018". This time, DC can finally enjoy its victory for a moment.

The movie highly restores the comic story , and truly presented the magical underwater world. Of course, the man who stars as the "king of the ocean" in the movie, Jason Momoa, is one of the biggest selling points that drives people to cinema.

A Walking Hormone, Best Candidate for Aquaman

Staring as as Aquaman, Jason Momoa has a muscular physique of 6'4" height and 210 pounds. I believe many girls rush to the theater only for the masculine look of Jason, regardless of the jealous boyfriend sitting beside them.

Many people knew Jason from the character of the Dothraki king, Khal Drogo, of Game of Thrones. Coming from the mainland of Westeros, Jason seemed to be just right for the role of Aquaman because of his deep connection with the ocean. Like Aquaman, Jason is also a mixed-race.His father is of Native Hawaiian descent, while his mother is of German, Irish, and Native American ancestry.

He has grown up at the beach and had never been away from the ocean. Before entering show business, Jason would always go to a surf shop for a part-time job during his vacation. Another happy coincidence, Jason majored in marine biology in college. It is no wonder that Jason can communicate with marine life freely in the movie.His deep understanding and love for the ocean, gave Jason all the bravado and charisma needed to fit the role of Aquaman.

Not Easy to Be Aquaman

In order to give a better performance in Aquama, Jason Momoa did tons of fitness training, endeavoring to engrave his body lines, especially the muscle lines of the chest and back.

Nevertheless, a muscular physique was not enough to make him a star. Like the story in the movie, Jason had also experienced low points in life and eventually paved the hard road. In 2011, Jason appeared as the Dothraki king, Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones . However, Hollywood never lacks of tough guy, so the audience is a bit tired. Jason’s character died in the first season of Game of Thrones.

Fortunately, fate takes care of those who are well-prepared. The Dothraki king deeply impressed DC director Zach Schneider. He invited Jason to the audition of Batman vs. Superman . After receiving the call, Jason didn't even ask which character it was and went to the director straightly. He thought to himself: was there another Batman besides Ben Affleck for me to play? Finally, he took the character of Aquaman. Sometimes, you just need a little luck to succeed.

In the movie, Aquaman’s real name is “Arthur Curry”. He is the son of Atlanna, the princess of the underwater nation of Atlantis, and a lighthouse keeper. He has a semi-human and semi-Atlantis lineage, so the burden of communication between humans and Atlantis falls on his shoulders.

From a very young age, Arthur shows various super powers from normal people. He can swim at supersonic speeds, and possesses superhuman strength. He not only can breathe freely underwater and on land, but also can communicate with marine lifeforms. Super cool, isn't it！

The movie tells a story that after learning he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, the adult Arthur returns to the ocean to destroy his brother's dirty plot and becomes the king of Atlantis.

You don’t want to miss this splendid movie of course, and certainly not the Easter Eggs too. It is said there are 22 Easter Eggs in the movie. Have you found all of them?
