Indo-China Relation: Why Are India-China Relations Not Improving Despite Increasing Trade, Tension On The Border Will Affect Relations, Know History Of’Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai’

6 Nehru's Controversial Decisions
Nehru's Controversial Decisions. Assessing Jawaharlal Nehru's impact as Prime Minister is subject to varied perspectives.
Accusations against Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, often center around six controversial decisions or actions. While interpretations vary, critics commonly point to the following aspects 6 Nehru's Controversial Decisions:
1. Kashmir Issue:
Nehru's handling of the Kashmir issue, especially his decision to seek the intervention of the United Nations, is criticized. Some argue that it led to a prolonged and complex dispute. Jawaharlal Nehru faced a highly controversial situation with the accession of Kashmir to India in 1947, amidst an invasion by Pakistani-backed tribal raiders. Despite a personal attachment to Kashmir, following Lord Mountbatten's suggestion, Nehru opted to involve the United Nations rather than take immediate military action. He pledged a plebiscite for Kashmir's people, a promise that was never fulfilled. This decision led to the division of Kashmir between India and Pakistan, sparking a long-standing conflict with significant human and diplomatic costs. Critics argue for a more decisive stance to secure the entire region, while supporters maintain that Nehru prioritized peace and democracy.
2. The Socialist Path:
Socialist ideals and a fondness for the Soviet model shaped Nehru's economic strategies. He prioritized state control and planning, imposing strict regulations on the private sector, and neglecting agriculture and social sectors. His import-substitution policy hindered foreign trade. These measures resulted in low growth, high inflation, persistent poverty, and corruption. Critics argue he stifled entrepreneurial spirit, while supporters maintain he aimed for a self-reliant and egalitarian society.
3. China Policy:
The border dispute with China and the war of 1962 are seen by critics as a failure of Nehru's foreign policy. Accusations range from diplomatic miscalculations to inadequate military preparedness. Nehru's foreign policy centered on non-alignment, fostering friendly ties, especially with newly independent nations in Asia and Africa. He aimed for a special bond with China, as seen in the slogan "Hindi-Chini bhai bhai" (Indians and Chinese are brothers). Despite warnings about China's expansionist agenda, he did not respond effectively to their actions, leading to the 1962 war and India's defeat. Critics argue he was naive, while supporters view him as a visionary peacemaker.
4. Political Approach:
Nehru's political approach, including his management of political dissent and handling of internal conflicts, has been questioned. The declaration of Emergency in 1975 during the tenure of his daughter, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is also linked to the political legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Nehru faces accusations of fostering dynastic politics and nepotism in India. He prepared his daughter, Indira Gandhi, as his successor, appointing her as the president of the Congress party in 1959. He prioritized loyalists and relatives over merit in key positions, sidelining figures like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, C. Rajagopalachari, Rajendra Prasad, and Subhas Chandra Bose. The absence of a robust second line of leadership in both party and government is also noted. Critics argue that this undermined democratic and meritocratic values, while supporters assert it was a matter of trust and empowerment within his circle.
Nehru faces criticism for his policy of prioritizing minorities, especially Muslims, potentially at the expense of the Hindu majority. He backed separate electorates and reservations for Muslims pre-independence, contributing to India's partition. His opposition to a uniform civil code, aimed at ensuring equal rights for all citizens, irrespective of religion, and his support for the Muslim Personal Law, perceived as discriminatory against Muslim women, are notable points of contention. Critics argue bias against Hindus, while supporters maintain his stance was rooted in secularism and tolerance.
5. Defense Policy:
The perception that Nehru's defense policies were inadequate, especially during the Indo-China war, has been criticized. Some claim that stronger military preparedness could have averted the conflict. Nehru is criticized for neglecting the defense and security of the nation. His lack of emphasis on modernizing and expanding the armed forces, insufficient investment in nuclear and missile technology, and inadequate attention to security threats from neighboring countries, particularly China and Pakistan, are pointed out. The absence of a robust intelligence network and a clear security doctrine, coupled with neglecting separatist and extremist movements, like the Naga insurgency, Dravidian movement, and Naxalite uprising, is also cited. Critics argue he was weak in protecting the country, while supporters maintain his approach was progressive and peace-oriented.
6. Language Policy:
The decision on the choice of Hindi as the sole official language faced strong opposition, particularly in the southern states, leading to tensions and protests. Eventually, a more inclusive language policy was adopted. 6 Nehru's Controversial Decisions

Ishani (@curious_book_o_holic) shares with us a chapter from India’s recent history, a war we lost to China and asks if this was our own making. Today’s book recommendation is - Himalayan Blunder by Brig J.P. Dalvi. . She says, . "This is not just a book, but a magnum opus on the Sino-Indian clash of 1962. It doesn’t only focus on the war preparations (if that can at all be called a preparation) but gives a detailed account of political developments around the world, our faulty foreign policies post independence, the rot that had set in our Govt., the harassment of brilliant army generals at the hands of Govt., the formulation of “Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai” policy, the neglect and subsequent politicization of the army, replacement of army generals who had the guts to disagree with Mr.Nehru-Menon by handpicked generals and etc etc." The path of India was doomed since 15th August 1947. The superior air of a few leaders, know-it-all attitude, complete negligence coupled with adamance is what led India to 1962. The clash off of 1962 was a wake-up call for the country. Had there not been a 1962, it is scary to imagine what would have happened in 1965. This book is HIGHLY recommended.” . . Which is your favourite book on a war? Let us know in the comments! . . UNRESOLVED BORDER TENSIONS
Tumblr media
Looking back at the past 70 years, China-India relations have moved ahead despite wind and rain and gone through an extraordinary development path. In the 1950s, the leaders of the older generation of the two countries made the historical decision to establish diplomatic relations between China and India, and jointly advocated the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. “Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai”…

HINDI CHINI NOT BHAI BHAI
The other day I stepped out to do some grocery shopping. As I walked through the market, I happened to cross by a toy shop and my mind flew to our little granddaughter who is 7 months now. And I thought of buying a sipping cup for her.
Tumblr media
The shopkeeper showed me a couple of sippers. Some of them were American brands. But all of them were ‘Made in China’. An alarm bell went off in my mind; it was saying, ‘Hindi - Chini NOT Bhai bhai’. I told the salesman, “I don’t want to buy anything Chinese. Can you give me an Indian brand?” He said, “Madam, I don’t think you would find it anywhere.” I left the shop disappointed and needless to say empty handed.
Back home I told my daughter-in-love that, if there is no Indian sipping cup available, it’s better to start using a normal glass from the kitchen because I can’t bring myself to buy a Chinese product. In my heart I felt miserable. The Chinese have taken over or should I say ruined our plastic industry amongst many other industries.
Tumblr media
We live in sector 18, which is the hub for buying electronics and crockery in Chandigarh. Most electric fittings like lights, switches, cables, chandeliers are made in China! Next I went to a crockery store and was dazed to notice the ‘Made in China’ mark on plates, glasses, table mats, curios, decoration pieces, center table pieces, crystal, trays, flasks… I realized that this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Back home, I heard my kids discussing about the huge Chinese investments in Paytm, Byju’s, Ola, Flipkart, Swiggy etc. I felt sick.
I recalled that a few years ago I needed to buy small idols of Ganeshji and Lakshmiji for our office. I had found the right size idols made of POP/marble dust in a shop in sector 19. I noticed that the eyes of the idols were very narrow and slanting. Something about them just didn’t feel right. Then it struck me that these were made in China! When an Indian artisan makes an idol of God, he would make well defined eyes and lips. But the Chinese can obviously make only what they see around them… that explained those elongated slanting eyes and flat noses. I had rejected those idols and opted to buy brass idols that at least looked like the way we picture the Gods in our minds eye.
Sadly the Chinese have invaded our idol making market too. We find Chinese looking Rama, Krishna, Shiva etc. I have not bought Chinese lights on Diwali for years. And on Holi I insist on buying only herbal colours.
The day I saw the news that Indian Government has banned 59 Chinese apps, I felt like someone had applied balm on my aching heart. It is time each one of us resolves to stop buying Chinese products. Every bit matters. It will surely take some time for us to weed out all the Chinese stuff that has already entered out homes, but at least let’s resolve not to buy more.
Slowly I am sure, India will be able to produce everything that we import from China and we will become self-reliant. The intermittent phase could be difficult no doubt but what has to be done has to be done. The Government can make policy decisions but unless the people fall in line the progress cannot be manifest. Because every drop goes to make the ocean...

China actually is the one provoking india. They have never had a good relationship. In 1962 one day they said, "hindi chini bhai bhai," and the next day they literally declared war. India's government is obviously corrupt, but china's is even worse. India, at least is a democracy you can say stuff against the government. But in china, if you do you will be eliminated. The CCP is literally vile. The thing is there is not one good candidate in india. It's always voting between evil and lesser evil
i definitely agree with you on the point of china’s government being horrible, but i’m not gonna sit here and pretend that india hasn’t had a huge part in creating issues with their neighbouring countries. they proceed to bring china into every little altercation they have with other nations and it’s a terrible tactic tbh, idk what their aim is

A person's character can be seen by looking at his friends, but to see a person's strength, you need to look at his enemies.
I often hear - 'India's biggest enemy is Pakistan'... and I'm like... Seriously? Are you kidding? C'mon... We deserve much better. Also because, for instance, the Lion doesn't bother about the enmity with a puppy. Although the pup might often try to bite the Lion when the Lion is not alert, but ideally there is no comparison. *Just an example, meaning no offence to the common Pakistani citizens.
To begin with, a minute of silence for all those who believe in "Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai". Even after China keeps on slapping India whenever it gets a chance to, still if there are people thinking the above phrase to be true, a serious medication is needed. Moreover, we keep on hearing that we have a threat from China to the east and Pakistan to the west. But this too seems just a nomenclature now. Its actually China to the east and China to the west. And soon enough we might witness an era of Chinese colonization in Asia, starting from the Pakistan occupied state of Baluchistan. Why calling occupied? Google it :)
Most of us know about the Indo-China war of 1962, in which we suffered a defeat at the hands of the Chinese. Not really a military defeat, but a political one. Not many people know about the Indo-China war of 1967. This was a humiliating defeat for the Chinese and India gained a much needed moral victory.  Its the reason I admire the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi.  Looking at the positives, she was really good with her neighborhood policy and internal security. Hers was the time when the RAW used to be at its prime.
Coming back to China, its a country which has a deep respect for history. The Chinese understood after 1967 that they cannot directly lock horns with India. And its almost around 53 years, not a single bullet has been fired across the Indo-China border. Reports of skirmish or standoffs might come from the LAC, like the present day scenario in Ladakh. But kicks and punches are not the way how armies fight. So, has China been quiet since 1967? Perhaps not. China has been really good at praising on the face and stabbing in the back. Be it on Kashmir, terrorism or any other matter, in the UN, or any global platforms, China has continuously posed hurdles for India. On the other hand it has been an all weather ally for Pakistan. CPEC, weapons, funds and what not. Moreover, China has been funding and supporting the communist ideology in India and even tried its best to create unrest in our North Eastern states to standstill any development. Now with a communist government in Nepal, its also trying to blemish the historical Indo-Nepal relationship. Even in trade, we stand at a deficit of around $65 billion.
Coming to the good part now. With a strong government in power which also has a strong diplomatic relations with other countries, we can anticipate a very minimal impact of the Chinese plots against our country. But yes, there are measures to be taken. We do need somewhat aggressive policy towards China.  And if the time comes, we too have a lot of arsenal in our bag.  Vietnam, Tibet, Taiwan, Africa, HongKo....Oops...perhaps I shouldn't go deeper. In conclusion, all we need to ensure is that we do not remain so defensive that we fail to keep pace with China in becoming the new superpower of the world. As the wise proverb says, “seeking revenge is not the best option always but neither so is forgiving every time”.
