Dolemite (1975)

Dolemite is memorable, culturally significant and entertaining all the way through. That said, the writing, performances, fight choreography and camerawork all are poor. The technical aspects make it hard to call it “good” but if it is a bad movie, it's one you won’t be sorry to see.

With the help of corrupt police detectives, Willie Green (D’Urville Martin, who also directs) sends his rival, Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore), to prison. Since Dolemite's incarceration has done nothing to stem the criminal activity in his former neighborhood, fellow pimp Queen Bee (Lady Reed) convinces the prison's warden to release Dolemite and allow him to work with the FBI to clean up the streets.

Even if I warn you about how bad the fight choreography is, you’ve got no idea. It’s without a doubt the worst I’ve ever seen. Punches miss by a mile and Rudy Ray Moore doesn’t know a karate kick from a bowel movement. The camera is badly positioned, which makes it all the more obvious the bad guys he’s beating up are practically throwing themselves into trunks and onto the ground to show how virile and powerful our hero is.

The acting and writing are on the same level as the action scenes. The dialogue is lousy, which means the poor non-actors don’t stand a chance and this all makes the convoluted plot even more puzzling. In at least one shot you’ll see a boom mike in the bottom left corner of the screen. This means there’s plenty to make fun of but you don’t feel too bad about ridiculing this genuine effort because "Dolemite" is kind of in on the joke. Some of Dolemite’s dialogue is so outrageous they knew it would have the audience laughing. The violence might not be convincing but there’s a lot of it, which counts for something. Most importantly, Rudy Ray Moore has enormous amounts of swagger and presence. You keep watching, wondering what his character will do.

While Dolemite is not on the same level as Superfly, Shaft or Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, it contains the same elements that make them successful. It is a story of a Black hero hounded by corrupt white police officers who frame him and abuse their power until he rises to face them. While a pimp might not be what you would call a role model, Dolemite is the opposite of what traditional Hollywood Black men were like at the time. He is desired by all women regardless of their skin colour. He takes charge and never backs down. This film was made for Blacks, by Blacks. The humor spoke to them and while the film is funny, you can see elements of real-life pain and concerns beneath the surface - all of which Dolemite addresses with clenched fists and the heels of his boots. It is not a great film but you remember it and recognize why it was a big deal when it came out.

It’s probably best to go into Dolemite knowing the climate that created it. This may tempt you to watch 2019's Dolemite is My Name first to learn about the production, but I’d advise against it. The best scenes are spoiled by the Eddie Murphy film and it covers not only the making of this picture but that of the sequels as well. I say watch them as a double-feature but make sure this one is first.

You may wonder why anyone in their right mind would recommend Dolemite but if you’re interested in the history of cinema, particularly Black cinema, it’s a minor classic. (February 5, 2021)

BLOGTOBER 10/23/2020: I WATCHED THE LAST DRIVE-IN WITH JOE BOB BRIGGS AND ALL YOU GET ARE THESE CRAPPY REVIEWS - pt 2: HACK-OLANTERN

This was a tough one. On paper, it's extremely promising: An Indian production team who had never heard of Halloween decided to make a holiday-themed American horror movie loaded up with all the lucrative sex and violence they could buy, dreaming of a success that could never possibly arrive. While I have some moral qualms with the term "outsider art", I always welcome the work of filmmakers whose disconnection from mainstream production requires them to work from the ground up, inventing whatever they need to express themselves as they go along. The results can be weird, funny, and in any case, necessarily original. When things don't work out for the best, it might be because the filmmaker is thinking less about his own desires and more about manipulating the audience, usually with money in mind. Even though the satanic slash movie HACK-O-LANTERN maintains a certain amount of helpless bizarreness, it's also...just kind of hard to get through. Let's see if I can figure out why.

The plot, such as it is, is focused, inasmuch as it is focused on anything, on a devil-worshipping pervert whose son-slash-grandson Tommy (Gregory Scott Cummins aka Mac's Dad on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) is coming of age on Halloween night. "Tonight you will know what power is!" cackles the old creep (played by Hy Pyke, best-if-at-all known as Taffey Lewis in BLADERUNNER) as he and Tommy do their secret satanic handshake, revealing that they don't know the difference between devil horns and the ASL sign for "I love you". Tommy spends most of his time pumping iron in his mom's basement and trancing out to the tunes of hair metal band DC LaCroix; this is the movie's most memorable sequence, a hallucinatory music video in which a budget version of Kali shoots laser beams out of her eyes that turn drums into shrunken heads and guitars into pitchforks.

Meanwhile, Tommy's goody two-shoes brother Deputy Roger (Jeff Brown) and nice girl sister Vera (Carla Baron) are gearing up for their tiny town's Halloween party. Everyone is excited for the holiday, which they celebrate with an unlikely combo of burlesque-flavored full-frontal stripping, bellydancing, bands, and stand-up comedy. Rog even gets laid in the cemetery by Vera's slutty friend Beth (Particia Christie), who utters the suspiciously unflattering post-coital comment, "You enjoyed it. I could tell." Unfortunately, everybody's good time is tainted by a murder spree perpetrated by a crazed killer in a cape and devil mask who takes down the likes of Jeanna Fine, the most prominent but not the only porn veteran in this picture. Is the murderer Tommy, coming into his satanic power? Or is it Tommy's mom (Katina Garner), who is pissed off that her adult kids are living their own lives? Or is it... look, it doesn't matter who it is. The ending isn't going to make any sense anyway.

This movie is a lot more fun to describe than it is to watch. Somehow, all of this wanton zaniness doesn't accrue much charisma, and it's hard to feel excited by how little you can understand of what the hell's supposed to be going on. Possibly the best part of my own viewing experience was just the trivia download I got from this installment of The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs. Briggs' typically entertaining commentary included the claim by one of the filmmakers that he made his first fortune selling 50,000 tee shirts that said I LOVE MY AUNT on them, or the frightening fact that production was delayed when director Jag Mundhra fell into the open grave they used for a murder scene, and had to be hospitalized for months. I wish I had written more of these factoids down, but I was having a hard enough time just keeping track of what was happening in the movie itself. Oh well. It ought to become available on Shudder soon. Consume it with my personal caveat that HACK-O-LANTERN is better enjoyed as an anthropological oddity, than as a real movie.

Ngay sau đó, teaser về Morderkaiser cũng được tung ra. Đoạn tuy ngắn nhưng người xem có thể dễ dàng đoán được thông qua vũ khí (chùy) và tạo hình của hắn.

Vậy hãy điểm qua một chút về 6 thành viên sắp tới của thế giới Siêu Phẩm.

Với tông màu phát quang là Vàng Sáng, khả năng cao, Varus sẽ là đồng minh mới của Phe Nổi Dậy G/NETIC hoặc là một gương mặt mới cùng phe Khu Trung Tâm với Vi, cùng nhau thực thi pháp luật.

Với tông màu phát quang chủ đạo là đỏ, đồng thời được xem là một mối hiểm họa (threat) như được đề cập trong đoạn video, khả năng cao Mordekaiser sẽ thuộc về phe Tập Đoàn Siêu Phẩm (PROJECT Command Line). Nhiều dự đoán cho rằng Morderkaiser sẽ là trùm cuối trong vụ trụ này.

Thông qua voiceline ta có thể đoán được rằng Renekton đang cùng phe với Ashe, tức G/NETIC. Tuy nhiên, hắn có nói rằng sẽ giết Ashe ngay sau khi hoàn thành mục tiêu.

Từ đây suy ra, Có thể Ashe đang nắm giữ điều gì đó có thể khống chế được Renekton, hoặc tên Cá Sấu cần Ashe trong kế hoạch của mình

Ngoài ra, Renekton sở hữu tông màu chủ đạo đỏ, cam có phần giống với Pyke. Có thể hai tên này sẽ có chút liên hệ gì với nhau.

Sejuani có phần màu khá giống với Ashe, tuy nhiên lại nhạt hơn một chút. Nhiều khả năng cô nàng cũng thuộc G/NETIC, hoặc nếu khác thì sẽ là phe Khu Trung Tâm cùng với Vi.

Thế là cặp vợ chồng Senna Lucian đã lấn sân sang Siêu Phẩm. Tuy nhiên, thật khó để nói hai người họ cùng phe với nhau. Vì Senna sở hữu tông màu tím rất giống với Vayne, chồng cô thì lại lấy màu đỏ làm chủ đạo. Cho nên, có thể Senna sẽ không sánh bước cùng Lucian trong vũ trụ này.

Với nét màu và tính cách được thể hiện qua hình ảnh. Sylas dự sẽ là một Sugar Daddy thuộc phe Ngoài Vòng Pháp Luật.

Vậy là đã hết một số dự đoán về cốt truyện của vũ trụ Siêu Phẩm. Hy vọng người chơi có thể sớm trải nghiệm dòng trang phục đầy tính Cyperpunk này.
