How do you think elderly Taang would handle becoming grandparents? How would they react to their grandchild?

Hi Ronin! Hope all is well, and thank you for the ask!

Good question, and rather appropriate, because it’s been a while since I’ve chatted about Taang headcanons and I miss my dunebabies LOL.

So since it’s been a while, my main dunebabies include Lin, Gyatso, Suyin, and Kenji. I don’t necessarily go into grand dunebaby details because I like the idea of leaving that up to one’s imagination, but I think it’s possible that all the dunebabies grow up to have families of their own.

Su seems like the first dunebaby to have kids, and she probably starts her family relatively young. I think at first, Aang would freak out a bit, only because Suyin is a baba’s girl and so he’s a little overprotective with her. Toph on the other hand would probably know that Su is pregnant before she even realizes it haha! Toph is pretty relaxed about it all, but she makes sure that Suyin is happy about this revelation and whatnot. Having a kid young is tough work, so Toph just checks in with her baby girl.

Overall I think Toph and Aang would be very happy and supportive of Suyin! She doesn’t necessarily live in Republic City anymore, so they don’t get to see her often when she’s preparing for the baby’s arrival. I can imagine that Toph and Aang visit Su once the baby is born, and that’s when it hits them that they’re grandparents.

Aang would definitely get emotional. He’d think about the passage of time, he’d think about when Suyin was first born and what that was like for both him and Toph, and he’d think about the future, how this baby will grow up and how they’ll interact with their aunts and uncles and future children that come along the way. He’d get swept up in all of it, especially when he holds the baby for the first time.

Toph would likely feel the same way. After all, she did marry the sentimental Twinkletoes, his personality rubs off on her just a bit LOL. But she keeps her feelings at bay, and no one really notices that she thinks and feels all the same things that Aang is feeling when they hold their first grandchild. I think her mind would also wander to the thought of the Air Nation being reborn through their family, and she smiles at the thought of Aang’s heritage and culture continuing on as the generations continue.

As far as how they interact with the baby as they get older? Well, Toph and Aang like to spoil their grandkids in things and experiences, mostly to bother the kid’s parents LOL. Toph and Aang love spoiling the kid and they love getting under Suyin’s skin. It’s all in good fun, of course, no boulder are thrown post-teasing/rule breaking session.

Stitchy my pal. Let’s talk taang. 💛 What’s something Aang loves to do with his dunebabies that Toph absolutely hates? And vice versa?

Hi Joy! :D I'm MORE than happy to chat about Taang because they're so fluffy and great please.

I feel like Toph and Aang are both pretty chill parents, and they trust each other when it comes to how they raise their kids together, or what they do when one of the parents isn't looking. There are definitely instances where they may be annoyed or frustrated, but I feel like those moments are few and far between.

Still, there's probably one or two things that Toph and Aang do with the kids that drive each other insane LOL.

So with Aang and the kids, I feel like anything flying related and Toph isn't with them bothers her so much. Not because they can't/shouldn't be flying, but she prefers to be able to see where they are and everything and for a few minutes, they just disappear. Sometimes she forgets that they went flying and it sends her in panic mode.

It's mostly a comfort thing and just Toph being protective mama badgermole, but I would say that's the biggest thing that Toph hates, but can't really control.

With Toph and the kids, Aang always finds it annoying when they play in the mud together LOL. Like, they come back in the house, covered head to toe with mud and dirt and Toph never bothers to clean them off. Something about a healthy coating of earth or whatever...

He doesn't appreciate it. And if he complains, she just goes "What? I don't see anything" and oh lordy that makes Aang want to pull his metaphorical hair out LOL.

What are the dunebabies favorite hobbies? Favorite places to go? Favorite things to do with their parents?

JOY hello hello I'm sorry this took a hot minute. Glad we're restarting our Taang rambles! :)

Lin: She's a big bookworm, so she'll often read in her free time. She's also really into swimming, so she'll go to the beach with her friends on their days off. And then hanging out with Toph and Aang, Lin likes to read to Toph (even when she's older). They often make up their own stories together too. Lin and Aang usually go on day trips flying with Appa or something. They also meditate in the morning! She's kind of the only dunebaby with enough attention span to do it before dawn lol.

Gyatso: He's a fan of scaling buildings, trees, anything. One thing he also loves doing is taking his friends with him to fly! They'll spend a weekend looking for cliffs near their home where they can glide and fly for the day. Gyatso is a fan of baking, too, so he'll make desserts for friends and family. Often, he convinces his Mama to bake with him (or just keep him company) and they make a whole afternoon out of it. With his Baba, Gyatso usually just talks with him about anything and everything (Gyatso is a chatterbox lol) and they'll also stretch/do yoga together after school/work.

Suyin: Suyin is pretty crafty, so she'll make different items like flower crowns, outfits, decorations, stuff like that. She's also a big gossip, so she likes having tea with friends and collecting all the juicy information around Republic City. Suyin also likes going to Gaoling to visit her grandparents. She loves making flower crowns and chatting with Aang, and she's actually a big fan of playing games with Toph. They are both competitive, so they bicker and are sassy when they compete against each other, but if they are on a team? They're unstoppable. Both types are fun for Suyin haha.

Kenji: He loves learning new martial art moves! That and cooking steak lol. Kenji spends most of his free time walking around town and observing people. He's got a couple friends that join him and they walk all over Republic City. They have a lot of food stops, but they don't really have a favorite place to go. They just go where the wind takes them and hope they see something cool on their way. Kenji doesn't venture too far from home, though. With his Baba, he likes to try hand-to-hand combat moves. He usually spends time with his Mama, and they will chat, cook steak together (Kenji does most of the cooking), and when he was younger, they were nap buddies.

here’s a dunebaby question, which one is your favorite! Or if you just can’t chose cause they’re all so lovable what’s your favorite thing about each one?

OOO great question! This is hard because the dunebabies are like my children lmao. I don’t wanna play favorites! I think secretly it’s Kenji because I have a lot more story ideas with him, but I do my very best to space out the stories and even out the spotlight lol. BUT I will give some of my favorite things about them because I'm in the mood to chat (ramble) about everything related to Taang lol.

My favorite thing about Lin is that she is a Beifong through and through, but not quite. She has these quieter tendencies that don’t necessarily scream a characteristic of Toph or Aang. She’s also a BIG grudge holder. And while Toph can be stubborn, she never struck me as someone that held grudges; she was rather forgiving if people were sincere. And Aang is really big on forgiveness; I don’t recall him ever holding a super longstanding grudge. But Lin will. She’ll be wronged by some cashier when she was ten, return to the store years later and remember the cashier that messed with her. And she’ll give them attitude just like Mama taught her. I think out of all the Beifong's, she seems like this odd sheep that has a very different personality from the rest of her family, but not really. It’s just more muted and reserved.

Gyatso is this super lovable kid that just wants to make friends with everyone, and I think that’s really sweet. He cares a ton about how other people feel and thinks that if everyone talked it out, everyone would be happy. He is a Beifong though, and the only people that have ever really ruffled his feathers are his siblings (and they’re allowed to). So sometimes (often) he’ll fight with them. Gyatso is super clumsy too, literally trips over his own feet everywhere he goes. He tries to be more careful as he gets older, especially when he’s around his mother. But, what many don’t know is that if Toph is the only one to help with one of Gyatso’s injuries, she’s is the calmest, gentlest, and most patient person in the world. Secretly, he loves it when she has to take care of him because she’s super sweet about it (not that Aang isn't, but it’s a side of his mother that no one else really gets to see).

Suyin is just a firecracker, just like Toph and sometimes it drives Toph crazy how similar they can be, but then there are times where she is just like Aang, so they don’t really know who she resembles the most personality wise. It’s like her personality shifts with the seasons... She’s the second youngest child in all of the Gaang and is SPOILED because of it. Very persuasive too. We probably won’t see this side of Suyin too much in my stories, but she is very outspoken about things she believes are wrong in society. Her best friend is a blind earthbender too (an OC of mine) and even though everyone has tons of respect for her mother, sometimes people treat her friend differently because he’s blind and she yells and complains that it’s the stupidest thing in the world that people would do that. She’s pretty good about putting people in their place when they say dumb things, and her friend is grateful for it, but he is also a super mellow kid and is like “Su it’s fine, nbd” and she’s like “NOPE.” 

Kenji is the perfect mix of sweet and adorable and chaotic. He is easily persuaded by his siblings to wreak havoc, and as a young child doesn’t think twice about it. He was also obsessed with playing with his aunts. Growing up, he got a lot of attention from the adults and because of that, often went to them for play time instead of “cousins” because his aunts and his Mama were cool and tough and the best playmates (Katara and Suki often missed play time with their own kids at this point, so whenever they had the opportunity, they jumped on it). He’s also just super sweet! If he asks his mother to play with him and she says in 20 minutes, he’ll wait. Or if she says not today, he’ll be mad, but okay. Mama said no. Same with his dad, he’s pretty good about listening to them the first time around (surprisingly). He’s also like this picture perfect toddler that has the most adorable and squishable face and it makes it hard for people to say no to him. Another interesting thing is that he’s very good with his other senses. He had his mother teach him how to see with them at a very young age, and because of that is really good about knowing his surroundings and not solely relying on his eyes to see. And while he’s an Airbender, he instinctively knows if Su is standing behind him or if Lin’s at the door or if Gyatso is upset without looking at them. It makes Toph and Aang wonder if some seismic traits were inherited or just learned, because like, it’s only with his siblings that he knows where they are (if they’re close proximity). Kenji just chalks it up to sibling telepathy.
