Fluffy Fridays—Chapter 157: A Man After Midnight, pt. 2

Pairing: Captain Swan

Summary: A series of unrelated, fluffy one shots featuring Killian Jones and Emma Swan and the relationship that makes us all swoon. Will contain both canon and AU stories. “Good news, love. There is indeed a man out there who heard your prayer. It may not be after midnight, but I am most assuredly a man, and I’m at your disposal.”

Emma’s jaw dropped as she opened her door to see her across the street neighbor in full pirate regalia standing before her and flirting outrageously.

It took her brain a second to catch up, but when it did, she realized what he’d just said.

“Excuse me?” she asked, folding her arms and frowning ferociously. “What, were you spying on me? You think it’s fun to creep on a person working out in the privacy of her own home? You are a stalker!”

He swaggered a step farther toward her, and she put out her hand to stop his progress. “I prefer dashing rapscallion,” he purred, “scoundrel?”

The way he lowered his voice, tucking his chin and looking up at her from beneath heavily lidded eyes at that last part did things to her. Things that were very definitely not PG rated.

That annoyed her more than anything.

“What you are is someone who needs to leave,” she said. “Now. Before I call the cops or knee you in the jewels or something.”

He looked on the point of responding, when Henry, her miniature black goldendoodle, suddenly made a flying leap through the air toward their intruder. For a moment, the man looked taken aback, but it took less than a moment for him to realize that the only threat Henry posed to him was the threat of licking him to death.

“It would seem your dog disagrees, love.”

Emma rolled her eyes. A watchdog Henry was not. He’d yet to find another creature--of any species--that he didn’t immediately want to be best friends with.

The man laughed as Henry jumped around him, yipping and whining in excitement, licking any bit of skin he could find. The pirate bent down and patted Henry affectionately as his laughter continued.

Emma wished she could say the sound of his laughter, the fact that he was obviously wonderful with animals, didn’t do anything to her.

This man was trouble. She’d known that since the moment she’d first caught a glimpse of him through her front picture window three weeks ago. If her disastrous history with men had taught her anything, it was that hot men were not to be trusted, and though she hated to admit it, this man was hot. Like the-sun-feels-kind-of-lukewarm-in-comparison hot.

She’d noticed him throughout the past weeks. How could she not? His apartment was indecently close to her own.

Didn’t help that Henry had also noticed the guy’s golden retriever and, of course, was desperate to go play with him.

So far she’d managed to avoid actually coming into contact with her sexy-as-hell neighbor, but it looked like today her luck had finally run out.

Now that Henry had met his newest best friend, there would be no living with him if she didn’t at least let the man in for a visit.

Emma sighed again, before stepping back and sweeping her arm out in invitation (a move that surprised him, if the way his eyebrows raised was any indication).

“You got a name,” she asked, “or should I just call you annoying hot stalker guy who likes to spy on women in his spare time?”

He grinned delightely. “Hot?”

She rolled her eyes. Of course that’s the part of her sentence he picked up on. She crossed her arms again, and he apparently got the picture that outrageous flirtation time was over. “Killian Jones,” he said, “but my clients at the harbor have taken to calling me by my more colorful moniker. Hook.”

He raised his left arm, and she noticed the rather realistic looking steel hook he held in his left hand. She supposed she should be alarmed that a stranger armed with an apparently deadly weapon was currently standing in her living room, but her instincts told her that he posed no danger to her.

In fact, even more than that, her instincts told her he was trustworthy, maybe even a good guy, and though they’d never met, she had the strangest feeling that she knew the guy; that they were destined to be friends (or more).

She recalled a conversation she’d had once with her best friend Mary Margaret Nolan. “I can’t explain it, Emma,” she’d said. “From the moment I met David I just knew. It was like we’d known each other forever, you know? I don’t know if I believe in love at first sight, but I knew there was something there, something amazing from the very start.”

Emma had scoffed at the notion. After all, Mary Margaret had always been a hopeless romantic, someone who was utterly captivated by idiotic romantic comedies that usually had Emma’s eyes rolling out of her head. Only made sense that as soon as she met a guy she might like, she’d convinced herself she was living a romance novel of her very own.

But now...well, now Emma wasn’t so sure. Now she was starting to wonder if Mary Margaret had a point

And she hated it.

Give him a chance! Her inner Mary Margaret said. She should ignore the voice. She really should. She knew that. Did she remember Neal? August? Or worst of all Walsh (What even was his obsession with flying monkeys?!)? They’d all seemed promising at first, and then...ugh, she didn’t even want to think about how colossally badly each of those relationships had ended.

So yeah, she should toss Killian Jones out on his ass, cutting this off at the pass before it even started (not there even was a “this” right now. She’d just met the man for heaven’s sake!), but somehow she couldn’t. Somehow her desire to get to know him was stronger than her sense of self-preservation.

Damn Mary Margaret and her stupidly contagious hope.

“Emma Swan,” she finally responded, realizing to her chagrin (and to his delight, apparently, gauging by his stupid grin) that she’d been simply staring at him for an absurdly long time. “And that flying mop that is currently trying to drown you with kisses is Henry.”

He laughed, bending down again to caress her dog. “I’m pleased to make your acquaintance, Henry,” he said, and then straightening again, he turned his gorgeous blue eyes on her before extending his hand. “And it is a very distinct pleasure to meet you, Swan.”

She felt her face flame and her heart pound in reaction to the smoldering attention he was tossing her way

Get a grip, Emma! You’d think this was the first hot guy you’d ever met.

She took a deep breath, took his hand, and gave it one quick, businesslike pump before she turned toward the kitchen. “You want something to drink?” she asked.

“A water would be lovely, if it’s not too much trouble,” he answered.

“‘Kay,” she answered, already heading in the direction of her fridge. “Go ahead and make yourself comfortable. I’ll be right back.”

She took as long as she could reaching into her fridge, letting the cold air bathe her, hopefully cool her down a little. She didn’t know what she was doing here; didn’t know how or why she’d ended up in this ridiculous situation, but in this situation she was, and she had to make the most of it.

Maybe...and she couldn’t believe she was even considering this...Mary Margaret had a point. Maybe it was time to start letting her walls down. She wasn’t going to take a wrecking ball to them altogether, but maybe, just maybe pulling down a few bricks here and there wouldn’t kill her.

Grabbing two water bottles, she turned back toward her living area, and her heart turned over at the sight before her. Killian sat on the couch, Henry draped across his lap, making small contented noises as Killian rubbed his belly.

You can trust him, her inner Mary Margaret insisted again. Today just might be the start of something amazing if you let it.

Maybe it would, or maybe it wouldn’t, Emma thought as she handed him his water and took a seat across from him, but for the first time in years she was willing to take that chance.

“So Killian Jones, tell me a little bit about yourself.”

Notes:

--Happy Friday and happy….spring? I don’t even know what season it is anymore after we got a ridiculously late snow earlier this week. At any rate you get an update two weeks in a row! (Don’t get too used to it; I make no guarantees that will continue, lol.)

--So Emma (with the help of her dog Henry) overcame her natural self-preservation instincts to slam the door in Killian’s face and has decided to take a chance on him. I suspect her inner Mary Margaret is right. This could be the start of something amazing.

--And Henry? Yeah, he is 100% based on my dog, Bear. This is exactly how he’d react if Killian showed up at my door. (Of course, that’s not saying much. It’s also exactly how he’d react if [fill in the blank with the OUAT character you hate most or find most annoying] showed up at my door.)

--What do you think? Is this fluffy little story at an end, or does it need another chapter? I’m kind of torn. On the one hand, I kind of like where I left it. On the other, I mean *shrug* Who knows? There’s always room for more CS romance. Maybe the muse will decide there’s more to this story left to tell.

Woooooow. Okay, Terezi's looking SMASHING. A lot like Latula, actually, with the hair. Lots of the characters are in to using their accentuting lines in their outfits these days, I've noted.

Pfffff, Terezi is just bored out of her mind. I guess she had the vague idea of serving as Dirk and Rose's consciousness, but that has turned out rather differently. Of course, she has little control over Dirk. Even her being able to have him stop calling Rose Rosebot, is just him humouring her to some extent.

Also, we get an insight what ascension is like for Rose. Still quite confusing, it appears. Then again, the process isn't finished yet for her.

I liked how the combination of the command and Dirk's first comment actually belong to be read together - in that he asked Terezi to render herself more symbolically, and she did!! Yes, her hear really looks like Latula's now.

I guess the reason she didn't succumb to drinking this time, is that Terezi isn't actually the one that caused John to die, unlike with Game Over Vriska. Though she's probably still guilt-ridden, since it was the exertion of getting her to Earth C that was the final straw.

I though Rose was alluding to Plato's Cave. And she seemed to notice the ship didn't need repairing and how odd that is. So she might be at least a little aware of his powers?

Well, at least we know now that Dirk has the same access as Dave.

And is Deltritus the name he has for the cave/planet? Though it sounds kind of like the name for a denizen.

Wow. Okay.

So. Dirk wants to create something wholly new. He thinks they made a mistake in creating Earth C from "leftovers".

I notice that we have kind of an alphabetical thing going on. Alternia, Beforus, Earth C, now Deltritus.

Dirk makes a good explanation about how he can still be so flawed while being completely self-aware. Still doesn't excuse all his manipulations. He keeps her on the same page as him at all times.

So the contest is about species. This means we're going to get 2 entire new species and cultures introduced, my god. I thought we had reached a threshold somewhere, somewhen. But no. Apparently not. I guess that's the next step we're going to.

The Watchmaker analogy is actually quite fitting for Dirk... and Rose's meta-analysis for her.

Dirk's notes on Deltritus are interesting. Shows he's actually not that concerned with details after all.

Blaperile has a good point - Dirk knows a session will be spawned here, but not what race "wins" in the end. Or he makes a point of not telling for the sake of his game.

I also saw some more of Dirk's accent slipping in here, suddenly. Huh.

Heh, the Sburb logo is actually in Jane's colour here, not Dirk. That will become relevant later on.

I wonder if this is how universes used to propogate in previous iterations. Gods create races, several per universe, on different planets at a time, and have all of them play Sburb.

Eeeuw, Dirk proposes to, like, experiment on DNA. So there isn't animal life to start from here.

In the end, what they start from is still ectobiological material, nothing from scratch.

Here's to hoping all their "iterations" only exist as holograms or simulations, not real beings. That'd be cruel, otherwise. Maybe this is a moment to give some of the fan species a cameo, make them canon that way!!

Note

I heard a couple people saying that they don't expect an onscreen "death" for Norman. But let's look at past events first. We've already had our onscreen fake-out "death" for Ray (coming soon to anime-only watchers) and we've already had our onscreen fake-out "death" for Emma back during Goldy Pond. Norman is the only character who hasn't gone through his onscreen fake-out death. You can argue that shipping him out was supposed to be the equivalent but I don't think it fulfills the requirements.

It took me some time to look up all the references, but I’m finally ready to reply, and I hope everyone else is ready because…

I will be PREDICTING THE NEXT CHAPTER(S) of the MANGA

Ofc there is always a chance that I’m wrong, but I think I have understood the game Posuka and Shirai are playing right now, and I can reliably predict the main contents of the next few chapters. (If I’m wrong, feel free to call me an iditot next week, but if I’m right, I think I will have earned a TOLD YOU SO at least hahaha)That being said…

So why do I think that I can predict the next chapters?Others have noticed as well that the current manga arc is making references to the most iconic scenes from the escape from Gracefield arc, but… did you notice that the references on the manga chapters were…

EXACTLY SPOT ON WITH THE ANIME?!

Huh? Am I sure? Oh yes… It only stabbed me in the heart this week because my favourite scene of Norman leaving reminded me exactly of what was going on in the chapter 127 due to the argument Emma and Norman had… but people…

THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON EVER SINCE THE ANIME STARTED. YOU THINK THAT I’M JOKING BUT BOOOOOOY YOU ARE WRONG!

I’ll make a little summary list for you.

Please bear in mind that some of the references are direct, and some are mirrored, or opposites to contrast.

1st Episode - Emma and Norman think Conny is fine, but are shocked to find out she is dead. Chapter 118 - Emma thinks Norman has died, but she is shocked to find out he is alive.

2nd Episode - Emma and Norman are alone at first, but then are joined by Ray. Chapter 119 - Emma and Norman are alone at first, but then are joined by Ray (and the others).

3rd Episode - By inspecting baby Carol, they manage to figure out how to deal with the trackers, their most immediate threat. Chapter 120 - By looking at demon genes and evolution, they find out how demons can be defeated, their most immediate threat.

4th Episode - Gilda and Don joins. Gilda is relieved (that Emma trusted her). Chapter 121 - Gilda and Don joins (the conversation). Gilda is relieved (that Emma doesn’t need to carry such a huge burden).

5th Episode - Ray tells Norman to lie (to Emma or else he wont support him). Chapter 122 - Ray tells Emma to be truthful (to Norman, but he will support her no matter what, this second part in the brackets is in chapter 123)

6th Episode - Emma tells Norman among the drying clothing lines her true plan, Norman tells her not to tell Ray. Chapter 123 - Emma tells Ray her true (feelings on the) plan with the drying clothing lines around them, Ray tells her to tell Norman.

7th Episode - Emma and Norman talk to Krone and learn some scary info about Krone (her heart chip implant). Chapter 124 - Emma and Ray talk to Barbara (and Vincent and Cislo) and learn some scary info about her (eating demon flesh). (Note, Barbara getting angry and threatening Emma is a callback to Don doing the same, but that one was in episode 6) (Also note that I have said before that Barbara is a 2nd reference for Tiger Lily from Peter Pan, and Krone was the first)

8th Episode - Norman goes with Emma on an investigation of the outside, but it unexpectedly turns dangerous. Chapter 125 - Norman goes with Zazie outside to form an allience with the demons he knows are dangerous.

9th Episode - Emma and Ray tells Norman that they have to talk to him about a change to the plan that Norman doesn’t want. (Norman pretends to accept it to later reveal he wouldn’t do it). Chapter 126 - Emma and Ray tells Norman that they have to talk to him about a change to the plan that Norman doesn’t want . (Norman refuses to accept it, but this only made clear in chapter 127).

10th Episode - It is revealed that Norman wont go along with Emma’s wishes, and they have an argument and hold hands. Chapter 126 - It is revealed that Norman wont go along with Emma’s wishes, and they have an argument and hold hands. (huh, I just literally COPYPASTED THIS ONE). (Note: that the hugging and face caressing scene when Norman left and Emma last saw him was already referenced when Norman and Emma first saw each other again in chapter 119, but this time Norman wasn’t interrupted from caressing her face… it’s funny how in the leaving scene it’s made clear that he is trying to caress her since he loves her…)

11th Episode - NOT YET AIRED but it is fairly easy to predict since they are animating roughly 3 chapters in an episode, so it will include : revealing that the whole escape has been planned already and is happening RIGHT NOW, Ray’s fake death, getting away by deceiving the danger, Isabella. Chapter 128 - NOT YET RELEASED My prediction is that despite us all expecting that it will take a couple more chapters to discuss plans to BREAK BACK INTO Gracefield, it will be revealed that is is HAPPENING right now. After all, Norman has already instructed Vincent in chapter 122 to speed up plans for it once he learned Phil was still there. I’m also thinking we will see them getting back inside by deceiving and escaping the notice of demons/adults like they did with Isabella.

12th Episode - NOT YET AIRED but if they are animating roughly 3 chapters in an episode, it will include : flashback to the time we saw Phil with Emma and we saw him tell her to leave him, crossing the cliff to escape to what turned out be the demon world, we see Isabella for the last time.

Chapter 129 - NOT YET RELEASED My prediction is that we will see Emma meet Phil again, and her promise to him coming to full circle just as we see her make it in the anime. I think we will also most likely see Isabella just as the chapter ends.

Predictions for chapters 129+ :

There are two iconic scenes that I think will only be referenced later

One of them is crossing into the demon world, which I think will be reversed into crossing to the human world. James Ratri has said that all the premium farms, including Gracefield has an entrance to the human world. So if they are already at Gracefield, I think they would cross over. We know however that Norman doesn’t want to go, so Emma and Ray may sneak away from the group. They already have the golden water that they need, and my prediction is that they are under the sea, and they will use the golden water to make an actual SHIP that they can board FLOAT to the sea surface. Just look at some of Posuka’s “random art” I will include a bit below.

The other is Ray’s fake “on screen” death that @vobomon has mentioned was also repeated with Emma, but not with Norman yet. When Norman was shipped, there was no gore, and there were some pretty big clues he was going to be ok. With both Ray and Emma it was much more explicit, and there were no clues given, but it was quickly revealed afterwards that they were ok. I agree that the same will happen to Norman, and I am expecting him to have a very graphic “death” on screen as well, perhaps something like being cut in half. Based on a theory @vobomon has, I believe that it will be a fake death, but unfortunately at this point that theory is unpublished so I can’t explain the details.

I also think both Phil and Musica will die in the future because if my theories are right, they are both based on people who have died horrible deaths… and not just one, but 2 each. Please see my other theories for details. I will include a reblog with links.

So what do you think? Do you think it’s ALL JUST COINCIDENCE, and I’m just making wild theories again? Or could I be right?

Hmm, well, we will find out in less than a week’s time when chapter 128 drops. Please do come back and give me some kudos if I turn out to be right. ;D

Ok, time for some more TGRE anime predictions! I’m enjoying the anime and the changes it’s done so far, partly because a few of them fall in line with what I’d been guessing they’d do for a while. So now, having looked at the things they’ve changed and switched around, it’s time to think about how they’ll handle the middle part. Because of all things, that’s what needs to undergo the most changes for this all to work out.

So, the four most changes so far: Tooru was found by Urie at Torso’s chamber Amon escaped Rue, Koma and Irimi stayed dead, and Kaiko wasn’t with Furuta when Tsuneyoshi was killed. I think these 4 changes are the key here to how they’re gonna create shortcuts to Dragon, some more noticeable than others.

Speaking of noticeable, the most obvious one to point out is Amon’s escape. That one plays the most straightforward, and it was by far the easiest guess. The lab section of the Clown Siege is... contrived, to say the least. Whatever his stay on the lab was meant for didn’t really go anywhere plot-wise But the anime decided to go for the more streamlined approach: You still have the mention that Amon’s pals with the :RE crew, so instead of him being caught and wrapping back around to the lab so he can be freed, he just poses dramatically on the cliffside thinking to himself “well... shit, they left without me” and he swims back to Tokyo, breaks into Akira’s place to get the cat, and then makes his way back to :RE. The important part here is, this cuts off a big part of 104-116 off, which allows them to be able to a) take it slower and b) use the post-Clown Siege parts for a longer breather episode. Were they to not cut the Clown Siege, we’d pretty much get no downtime episodes and we’d be jumping back to the action almost consistently.

Following that, let’s move on to the two smaller changes: Kaiko and Koma/Irimi. The latter one is one I’ve talked about before, a change I actually really appreciate because, other than the breaking of the Anteiku raid illusion, they really were just... there. I think they’ll just return as Spieldose in the finale, and that’ll be that. Which I’m fine with. As for Kaiko, his absence during the Furuta killing Tsuneyoshi scene means one of two things: Either he’ll deal with Matsuri right away... or we’ll get a scene of him approaching Eto in Cochlea. The preview for next week’s episode shows a bit more of the fight to escape Cochlea, so I could see a short conversation between Kaneki and Eto with the lines she didn’t bring up and telling Kaneki to hurry and go to his friends, Kaiko menacingly approaching from the shadows, and then the “I’m the One-Eyed King” line before cutting to the opening. Those are the two main reasons I could see them for not adding Kaiko to that scene, and instead have two random V dudes.

And then there’s Tooru. Hoo boy, is this gonna be the most controversial change. It already seems to be, actually. But being real here? I like it for a few reasons. One, the lack of shock value in how this is being handled; and two, the potentially interesting “outside perspective” take we might get here. I honestly suspect, at this point, that the anime will keep us away from Tooru’s thoughts for quite some time. I also think we’ll get some changes in the order of things, painting Tooru in a better light compared to the manga, and while still looking like someone on a dark path, it won’t have the amount of issues that you can easily raise with the manga version. And I think that at some point later, we’ll go back to the cave in a flashback, get a clearer idea of what happened there, and see what’s been going through Tooru’s head all this time, that being when we get to the equivalent of chapters 153-156.

Oh, I should talk about those changes that would make Tooru be seen in a better light compared to his manga self, right? Well, it all comes together with the other changes I’m thinking of, and how the middle part of the story leading up to Dragon can be condensed into 4 episodes. (Also, worth taking into account, the people present seeing dragon and their outfits). So here goes!

Episode 5: Potentially some of Kaneki’s talk with Eto that didn’t get mixed with Arima’s exposition, slight chance of Kaiko making his presence know after Kaneki leaves to help Touka & co, “I am the One-Eyed King” cutting into opening. Following that, chapter 99 (sans Koma and Irimi), Goat parts of 100-103, ending of 116, Goat parts of 117, ending of 118, Goat parts of 119, 120, the first half of 121, episode ending with the ending of chapter 100 (Kaneki meeting Furuta).

Episode 6: Kaneki-Furuta talk from 101, CCG parts from 100-103 with no Clown Siege references (mostly setting up the Yoriko-Takeomi wedding), Matsuri’s death happening if it didn’t in episode 5, CCG parts from 117-119 (introduction of the Oggai), second half of 121, Kaneki-Touka conversation from 122 interrupted not by news of an Oggai attack, but Tooru’s letter (changing “Yoriko was arrested” for “Yoriko will be arrested”), leading to the conversation from 124+125. 126 happens as is, with the knowledge of Yoriko’s arrest hanging over TouKen, but not straying off course. Yoriko/Takeomi related scenes from 129-131. End of 131+Qs scenes and wedding from 132.

Episode 7: Here comes the fun part. Ending of 128, with Furuta talking with the clowns about Dragon and Ayato finding the remains of the old underground king. Day after the wedding, news of the Oggai attack from 122. Talk and fight between TouKen and Tooru+Cousin Itt mostly the same, but Oggai bicycle attack replaced by a merger with the 24th ward arc fight. TouKen run into Juuzou blocking the path at the end. Closing images are a mix of the first few pages of 140+the ending of 133, Furuta seems to be in two places at once.

Episode 8: Office fight from 134-138 merged with Donato fight from 108-110. Furuta in the office is revealed to be Donato. Urie’s development from both parts mixed, fight ending with Roma’s death/Shikorae’s defeat and Donato’s “defeat”/finger reveal. Back to :RE, 143-144 happen, Marude arrives to a room with a distraught Urie and a nearly dead Kuroiwa, Hide reveal, earthquake, people there witness Dragon’s emergence. 145-146 happen, with a variant of 147 allowing for the the flashforward from episode 1 to happen the way we saw it marking the end of the episode.

Because of how the attack on :RE begins with most of the team scattered, a lot of the fluff from the 24th ward arc could be cut, and instead of Naki’s fake death you can easily have him just slated as missing in all that chaos. Yomo in the flashforward seems to be uninjured, both him and Nishiki are wearing suits, and Urie still looks injured and is looking from a broken window which matches the state of the chairman’s office, so this makes sense in my eyes so far. So I think this is how the rest of episodes would go:

Episode 9: Chapters 148-156. Cousin Itt and the other second gen Qs are mostly glossed over, with the Qs interaction with Tooru taking precedence. Technical aspects of Dragon simplified/bare minimum explained.

Episode 10: Chapters 157-165. The expected compressing this season has had so far, ending with the arrival of Eto to the battlefield to mirror episode 10 of Root A.

Episode 11: Chapters 166-172, 175. Following Donato’s defeat, 175 (without the opening scene) happens, and following Eto’s return to consciousness+the return of the White Suits, we move on to the Kaneki/Furuta fight, with Furuta’s fakeout mirroring episode 2 of the season, and ending in Kaneki’s finger crack.

Episode 12: Chapters 173-174, opening scene of 175, 176-179. Opening and ending tunes playing over certain scenes. Technically 7 chapters, which means they can take it easy compared to the rest of the season. First half of the episode ends on 177 (I can imagine Katharsis playing as 177 happens), I could see some things added to 178 (clarifying Eto’s fate, showing Ayato saving Kaneki), and I could see them streamlining 179 and not having all that narration but rather relying on show don’t tell. And of course, I’d hope for the major players of episode 1 of the season (Kaneki, Ayato, Eto, and Furuta) getting their time to shine this episode to mirror how the final season started. Rakuen no Kimi playing over the last HideKane talk and the final scene with the TouKen family.

That’s more or less how I expect it to go, at least. If it’s anything like this? I’m all in for it.
