The moment flickers. Anna, on the bed, her nephew on her lap, that crocheted blanket. The boxes in the corner stacked up high. And Anna's smiling at his chubby little hand. The photographs have all been taken down. The baby has her older sister's laugh. She's packed a duffel bag with her essentials.
"I hope our kids are just like this," she'd said.
"The truck will get here in about an hour."

Doing law school intros has been Very Funny bc today I was asked what got me into intellectual property and copyright law and I had to come up with an answer that wasn't "I've been writing fanfiction since I was a teenager and I spend a lot of time thinking about that legal grey area"

The Harrington Pattern Part 1
Hey, guys! Sorry I'm late uploading today, but I went to bed early last night and forgot to schedule this.
Oops!
But! Welcome to what I've been calling Steve is a History Nerd agenda. We see in season two on Steve's essay for colleges that he can link his grandfather's military service with his prowess on the basketball court.
It is also surprisingly well written. *shakes fist at the Duffers stop telling us he's stupid and then showing the opposite, please! Let him be smart, too!*
Summary: The Renaissance Fair is finally back in Hawkins after three year absence (Starcourt was built on the fair site and after the fire it was bulldozed back to it's original field). Everyone is excited, even Steve to everyone's amazement. But Steve is hiding other hidden depths as he offers to help the kids make their costumes for the Fair.
Lucas is struggling with being both a nerd and a jock and fears the judgment of his friends. Steve sets out to help him overcome those doubts to be himself.
Tagging the untaggable: @mira-jadeamethyst @rozzieroos @itsall-taken @redfreckledwolf @emly03
***
Nobody expects Steve to be excited for the Renaissance fair. Dustin, Will and Lucas spend hours plotting bribes, schemes and out and out manipulations to get Steve to agree to take them. Even Robin expected him to side with her about the dust and the filth. Eddie expected him to be dismissive of the fantasy aspect of it.
Boy were they all wrong.
For it was Steve to bring up to the group after a rather successful D&D session.
In his hand was a bright pink flier and a wide grin on his face.
“Guys! The Ren Fair is back this year,” he said in lieu of a greeting. “I’ll finally be able to show off that tunic I’ve been working on.”
All heads turned to Steve in shock.
There was a cacophony of questions.
“Since when did you know how to sew?”
“What do you mean back? I didn’t even know Hawkins had one to begin with!”
“You want to go to the Ren Fair?”
“Why would you want to spend all day in the heat and dirt?”
Steve looked around at all off his friends in shock.
“Guys, I love the Ren Fair,” he muttered. “Didn’t you guys know?”
All their jaws dropped.
And Eddie? Eddie felt an icicle to the heart at the sight of Steve’s hurt expression.
“You’ll pardon the peasants, my liege,” Eddie said, bowing grandly. “I’m afraid we have all be harboring under the delusion that Ren Fairs were beneath your notice.”
Steve blinked at him a moment. “But I love that stuff. It’s the history and sword fights and jousting. It’s the like medieval Olympics. It’s the romance and chivalry of knights fighting for a fair maiden’s hand. It’s getting to dress up in fancy clothes and rip into turkey legs like a savage. What’s not to like?”
Dustin frowned. “Who here knew Steve liked history?”
Robin and Nancy raised their hands. They looked around waiting for me people to join them. But they stayed down.
Steve ducked his head and scuffed the floor with the edge of his sneaker.
“The ex-girlfriend I’ll buy,” Dustin continued. “But Robin didn’t become friends with Steve until after he graduated so how did she know?”
Robin blinked at them owlishly. “You mean you guys don’t know?”
Everyone looked around each other and then shook their heads.
“Steve was in my AP history class my junior year,” she said as if this was know fact.
“You do know that AP stands for advance placement, right?” Mike asked.
Eddie smacked the back of his head. “She was in it, dude. Don’t be an ass.”
Steve looked up at him and smiled a little.
Good, Eddie thought. Nothing like a little Mike violence to cheer up Steve.
“He wrote an essay for early placement college exams,” Nancy said. “He didn’t get a chance to turn it in because of our second go round with the Upside Down, but it was really good. It needed a little neatening up with the actual writing, but the history was solid.”
Steve blushed. “Thanks.”
Dustin looked skeptical. “What’s your favorite part of history?”
Steve opened his mouth and then closed it again. “I liked hearing about my grandpa’s time in the US army during WWII, but that was more because he made it interesting. But I really like the Industrial Revolution. Or rather the first Industrial Revolution. There have been four. The first one was from 1760-1840 and featured heavily in the textile movement.”
The room was silent.
“Why textiles, Stevie?” Eddie asked as the silence grew awkward.
Steve lit up like a child at Christmas morning and he began talking about the British textile movement.
“What the hell?” Dustin huffed, breaking into Steve monologue.
Steve ducked his head again and blushed. “Just because I’m not interested in science and fantasy doesn’t mean I’m stupid.” He straightened up. “And yeah, sometimes I get things wrong. But everyone does at some point. In fact I get a hell of a lot more flack for my intelligence than Eddie does and he repeated his senior year twice!” He took a deep breath and then ran his fingers through his hair.
“No offense,” he said waving to Eddie.
Eddie looked up at him with earnest eyes. “None taken. I concur.”
They all looked around at each other in shock. Like they hadn’t realized that they had done that.
After a few moments, Steve put his hands on his hips and pointed at all of them.
“So do you guys want to go or what?”
Eddie sat back with a smile as everyone roared their approval.
*
“No corsets,” was Robin’s only firm and fast rule for Steve when it came to dressing her up for the Ren Fair.
Steve looked her up and down. “Why on earth would I want you in a corset? Have you looked in the mirror?”
“Uh...” Robin said. “Is that a trick question? Of course I have. I don’t what that has to do with saying no to corsets though...”
Steve rolled his eyes. “In order to give you the curve you need to match the proper silhouette you would need to be cinched to hell. And as this is supposed to be fun.”
He grabbed her hand and started hauling her toward his car.
“Where are we going?”
“Thrifting!” he said with glee.
It took three different stores and a stop at the mall to get everything he needed.
“Give me three days,” he told her when he dropped her off at her house. “And I think you’ll like what I come up with.”
Robin eyed him warily. “If you say so.”
Steve laughed.
He crashed the next D&D session, showing up early to pick them up.
“What is everyone wearing to the Ren Fair?” he asked with a note pad on his lap and wagged the pen in his fingers.
“You want us to dress up?” Mike asked, eyes wide.
“Why not?” he asked with a shrug. “I’ve made my costume and currently reworking some thirfted threads for Robin’s outfit.”
Eddie blinked. “You made your costume?”
Steve shrugged again. “Yeah. I like sewing.”
There was suddenly an uproar and he held up a hand. “I can’t make you a full outfit before the Fair, but I can make over already made clothes to make them more historical. And maybe for next year I’ll have the time to make something special for everyone.”
Dustin eyed him suspiciously. “Like what?”
“Like tailoring pants to a tighter fit,” Steve explained “adding a sash or belt, turning old coats into vests and cloaks, things like that.”
They still weren’t sure how that would work out.
“Now I talked to Joyce and Claudia,” he continued. “And they’re both willing to help out in making sure everyone has something nice to wear. That includes Max and El.”
“Are the fair maidens joining us?” Eddie asked.
Steve nodded. “Yeah. Joyce is doing El and Will, Claudia is doing Dustin and Mike, and I’m doing Lucas and Max. Eddie said he already had a costume, so I didn’t have to worry about him.”
Eddie grinned. “You better believe it, pretty boy.”
Steve ducked his head and blushed. “So we’re all going thrifting with a $5 limit for each of you. But I wanted to brainstorm some ideas of what you wanted to go as so we don’t waste time wandering around.”
Everyone started shouting at once and it took Steve a good ten minutes before he got everyone calmed down enough to get what they wanted. Dustin wanted to go as a hobbit, but Steve had to nix that one.
“You don’t want to go running around the grounds barefoot,” he explained with a wince. “It’s not safe.”
“I’m going to have to agree with Stevie on this one,” Eddie said. “You guys have never been but there is all sorts of stuff laying around. It’s not indoors and the pathways are dirt lined. Think the state fair. It’s more like that then going to comic book convention.”
Dustin grumbled but conceded the point. Steve got them to decide on... well not quite peasant gear, but more rough around the edges than what Steve would be wearing.
Well, all but Lucas. He didn’t want to wear what they were wearing but he refused to say what he did want to wear.
So Steve dropped him off at home last.
They pulled into his driveway and Steve turned to him. “Do you not want to dress up? Because I won’t make you.”
Lucas picked at the loose string on his sweater. “It’s not that. I just remember the last time we did a group costume and they all thought I should be Winston because I was black like he was.”
Steve frowned for a moment. “The Ghostbusters, right?”
Lucas nodded. “I knew if I brought it up they’d shoot me down again.”
“So what did you want to go as?” he asked.
Lucas huffed out a sigh. “It doesn’t matter. It’s a stupid pipe dream anyway. Especially since you have to make Max’s dress and Robin’s costume, too.”
He opened the door to get out, but Steve reached over and slammed it closed.
“One, Robin’s costume is almost done,” he said counting out on his fingers. “Two, do you really think your girlfriend is going to want to wear a dress? And three, let me be the judge on what’s too much for me, okay?”
Lucas huffed a laugh at his second point. “Yeah, that was dumb of me.”
“So what is it?”
Lucas looked down again and heaved out a sigh. “An elf.”
Steve’s mind was whirling with the possibilities. “What colors?”
“What?” Lucas asked, not sure he heard Steve right.
“What colors would you want it to be?”
He pulled out the notebook and scrambled for a pen. Lucas pulled a pencil out of his bag and handed it to him.
“Uh I was thinking of a light blue and with a silver trim?” he said hesitantly.
Steve sketched something out. “Like this?”
Lucas leaned over to look at the drawing. “A little shorter so I’m not tripping over it and maybe those puffy pants?”
Steve adjusted the drawing and Lucas nodded.
“Yeah, like that.”
“All right,” Steve said. “I know exactly what to do and how to do it. It won’t be perfect because I don’t have time to do it right so I’ll be doing a lot of cheating. But yeah, it’s doable.”
Lucas gave him a hug. “Thanks, man.”
*
Steve called the one person he knew he could help him.
“Eddie,” he said the second the other man picked up. “I need your nerd connections to do a huge favor for Lucas.”
“Wha’cha got, big boy?” Eddie asked with a grin.
“You wouldn’t happen to know any Trekkies would you?” Steve asked chewing on his bottom lip.
“That depends, Stevie,” Eddie replied, “what’s the need?”
“Pointed ears.”
Eddie hummed. “I’m assuming you’re thinking Trekkie because of Spock and that’s a good thought. But I’m guessing since we’re going to the Ren Fair our stalwart ranger is wanting to be an elf?”
“Yeah,” Steve said. “Do you know anyone who can help?”
“Better than that,” Eddie said. “I know where to get the ears in the right... shade?”
Steve perked up. “Oh? I’m guessing Jeff?”
“Right in one, darlin’,” Eddie said with a soft smile. “I’ll give him a call and then call you back.”
“Thanks, Eds,” Steve breathed. “You’re the best.”
“Thanks, doll.”

I am so excited for this, guys. You have no idea. I'm little history nerd myself and this really fun to play around with.
Just a heads up. We WILL be addressing Mike's casual racism from the Ghostbusters scene because I don't like that it's never been addressed.

Hello, I ummm... This is going to sound silly and I'm going to sound like a total nerd. Well... I love ren faires. The autumn months are my favorite because of them. I know lots of it is sapios who romanticize a time where putting a sword between my ribs or dying to my firey breath was the greatest thing they could imagine, but if you actually go there's way more creatures than you'd expect. I'd argue that if you include the people who volunteer and work at the events, there's more of us than them. Sorry, my feelings and justifications about ren faires aren't the problem here. The problem is that I found out the hardway that I am... A far bigger lightweight than most of my family. My friends teased me about not trying some of the stronger stuff being served at the faire and well... Two tankards in and the next morning I've woken up in a random cave with a bunch of plastic gold coins. I didn't find out what had happened until I got home and saw the local news. Apparently I'd taken over the fake wooden castle and demanded tribute and kidnapped various people dressed as princesses and princes and well... I'm a big fellow. And there aren't many several story tall winged lizards where I live. Let alone any with my scale color. I don't even know where my costume went... I know most of my genus don't wear clothing, but when you went to an event in costume and there's videos of you not wearing it... Well it's just a huge mess. I'm still hiding. My friends have tried to call me but I haven't responded. Everyone knows that was me... What do I do?
Unfortunately, reader, this is not a situation where there is a quick and easy fix that will make the whole embarrassing incident just… go away. It's happened, and there's no way to make it unhappen. But I want to reassure you that it's very likely nobody is feeling as bad as you are.
People get drunk. This is a fact of life. So too is it a fact that, very often, drunk people behave in ways they wouldn't dream of doing while sober. It is a mortifying moment, to wake up the morning after a party and realise you've made a fool of yourself. But it is also such a common experience, all but the most hard-hearted of your acquaintances will, I'm sure, be willing to forgive and forget.
After all, we've all been there, whether “there” is fake-kidnapping some fake royals, or keeping your guests trapped in your house, mindlessly frolicking back and forth in an unceasing dance for several years because you had a few too many strawberry piña coladas and decided you wanted your birthday party to go on a little longer. For example.
Talk to your friends. Let it be known that you're ready to make amends as necessary, and that this was a one-off incident that you will not be repeating. Depending on the damage you caused, you might expect to foot a few repair bills, or make a few sincere apologies – especially to the aforementioned fake royalty.
You can get through this with your dignity intact. Hold your head up, take responsibility for your actions, and who knows – perhaps you'll even be able to laugh about it. After all, it is, if you'll forgive my saying so, a very funny image.

I was once again lamenting aloud about big fancy top hats (bc I've always been enticed by them since being an Alice in Wonderland kid but now, ya know, Drumbot <3) and my mom says "you know I have one, right?"
She also happens to have a big floofy feathered pirate hat, but since the top hat was like super goth my mom just SAID I COULD HAVE IT ?? she's also super goth but she doesn't dress as dark as she used to and said it was more my style anyway
so anyway I did the obvious
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This the hat!!! It already had cute goth decor on it and I was NOT about to rip that off (it's a really nice hat) so I arranged the stuff on top lol. Might shift it around later (also everything is removable so I can enjoy the simple gothiness of it later- also look at the tool tail on it!!!! Just!!!!) and I also want the mechs symbol on it later when I get the chance. Also ace of hearts card on it just bc it fits the vibe while also subtly showing ace pride which I will do at any given opportunity (I am demi-romantic but still hopelessly romantic so yee ace of hearts is my fav rn).
I was just excited and wanted to share with fellow unwell mechs fans!!! (Also 50/50 i will cosplay him for the ren faire later this month now)

Howdy! Just reaching out with a two questions that are tangentially related to each other! Wanted to see if you do commissions and I had a question about resources.
My partner and I do Landsknecht costumes at Ren Faires, I wanna surprise them on (or maybe a few weeks after) Valentine's day of a commission of us in your style in costume! Your art style and familiarity with the period would make it perfect.
I also saw on your Landsknecht character art of Gunnlod[?] (this one https://www.tumblr.com/qsycomplainsalot/tagged/gunnlod) that they had a sweet doglock(?) pistol hanging from their hip. I couldn't quite tell because the mechanism is turned away. I've been meaning to add a Reiterpistole onto the current costume I've got. I was wondering if you had any reference images you use for when you're designing wheellocks/doglocks you could share?
Hey ! I'd say yes for the commission but considering my backlog it wouldn't be ready in time for the 14th of Feb. As far as designing firelock weapons honestly it's just a matter of building up your reference library by looking at museum collections and auction websites, I often just look up stuff as I need it .w.

hello hello! (again!)
been a bit since I did an updated one of these, huh??? but it's been about a year since i did my original one, so!!! time for a new introduction post!
Tumblr media
(art made by the wonderful @professor-amaryllis's player!!!)
anyway, hello!!! my name is ren (they/them or ze/zir!!), i'm 24 years old and welcome to my silly lil blog! i mostly use this to reblog orthworm and orthworm accessories!!! i'm a pokemart worker who's on leave at the moment, and i'm currently sort of a student at the blueberry academy! i'm currently taking some researcher courses there, and i'm tryin' my hardest to become an authority in steel type pokemon! though, uh, most of my experience is with my favorite pokemon, who i'm guessin' y'all can tell who it is. heehee
but uh, what else...i've actually got a fair amount of experience as a steel type trainer, and most of my research is focused on orthworm! their environmental impact and their role in the ecosystem is just fascinatin' to me, especially livin' near 'em in zapapico for most of my life! that's actually how i befriended my big ol' lug of a partner, lulu, who you'll be hearin' about a LOT on this blog heehee. he's been my buddy since i was a tyke, and we've been trainin' together for almost two decades at this point!
arc, i'm probs gonna ramble forever if i keep this up. i guess i can basically summarize everythin' else!!! i used to be a student at the old uva academy, and it sucked! was a student at the new one too, but circumstances have made keepin' up with that and blueberry stuff a lil harder than expected. i got my foot in the door originally workin' at the montenevera chansey supply, so i know a lil bit about pokemon medicine too if ya ever need advice.
i'll leave y'all with a trainer card, if ya ever need to contact me please feel free to shoot me an ask!!! promise i won't bite. maybe i'll make one'a them faqs at some point...and maybe a page for my pokemon!! that'd be real neat heehee
Tumblr media
((ooc info below the cut!))
HELLO ONE AND ALL my name is Sable (they/them exclusively), late 20s, nothing's really changed all that much but I needed to make an updated intro for Ren at some point anyway, so now seemed to be a good time!
guess to set some basic ground rules:
follows will come from @shinydracozolt! that is my main blog full of weird shit, so uh, don't be alarmed.
Pelipper mail type things are on, but I can turn them off if I wish to. I will let everyone know if I decide to do this.
I have not Tumblr RP'd before, please be gentle with me.
Blog will occasionally dip feet into the High Stakes pool, especially with current plots going on in the background regarding Ren's mother, who's kind of a messy shitshow of a person. Ren's backstory in general is kind of a mess! Mom is evil with connections to Team Flare and dad is dead so uh. Whoops.
This blog will occasionally delve into sensitive topics, mostly with ask games and such. The ones that mostly pertain to Ren are: mental abuse by a parent, bullying at the old Uva, the massive shut in arc they had between ages 14-18, underage drinking (they still partake and aren't an alcoholic, but they and the bottom of a bottle go way back, so to speak), and occasional mentions of weed. (they themselves don't do it but a friend and coworker of theirs is a stoner. these posts will be tagged accordingly)
There will be occasional shenanigans with @ribesrubrum! Basically I had Ren befriend a canon character in their Kitakami arc and didn't want to potentially make things awkward, so they will interact occasionally. Don't be alarmed!
Lemme know if you need any trigger tags accommodated and I shall do my best! My memory is not the greatest thing in the world but I will do my best. <3
Would prefer no NSFW sent Ren's way, they are ace as hell. There may be occasional mentions of it from other blogs, but they'll be tagged accordingly.
Not exactly open to shipping with Ren because, once again, the whole ace deal, but if something starts to go that way feel free to let me know? But I am going to say no automatically if the player is a minor and the character in question is not 21+.
Can't really think of anything else I wanna say, but I mostly play fast and loose with shit and Ren's kind of off in their own little world sometimes lmao

Fair warning: Mild Arkos Bashing ahead. I like it, But I have my qualms with it. Just a heads up.
I think I've finally figured out my issue with Arkos in canon, and It's the same Reason I didn't celebrate the Renora kiss
None of them had earned it by that point.
If I remember Correctly, Ren had explicitly Stated that he wasn't ready for something like that, but Nora Kissed Him anyway, And if all good Romance is earned, Then all good love is Freely Given, but Nora decided to take it instead.
(It Has Been a Bit since I watched Volume 7, so I could very easily be misremembering things)
They Were always Ren and Nora, never Ren, and Nora.
But with time, they've become more themselves, so they can more easily be themselves together.
They had to Figure out who they were/are by themselves before they can be With each other.
Now Arkos ...
They Were Far from Earning it.
Jaune had been Crushing and Chasing after Weiss for a good while, only up until around the Dance when he started backing off, with little indication he saw Pyrrha as anything more than a Friend.
He was still that Early Volume "Earnest, But clumsy and deeply Dense Fool that had to be saved from Trees" even if it was the tail end of that version of Jaune.
Pyrrha didn't change much over the three seasons, she never gained the confidence needed to confess until literal MINUTES before she died, and even then, it was WORSE timing than the Renora Kiss.
People were ACTIVELY DYING.
VALE WAS UNDER ATTACK.
I get that Pyrrha was doing what Hunter should've done and Ran off to try and stop Cinder, but she ran off alone, and Died. She Picked a fight she couldn't win, and ultimately it was for nothing.
Cinder, while injured, is still alive and kicking, And Killing.
And it's unfortunate.
Pyrrha Didn't Deserve that, None of these Kids deserve really any of the the bad stuff that's happened to them.
BUt it Happened Anyways.
If Pyrrha and Jaune had more time together - Say, Pyrrha Survived, Cinder - Then they Could have had time to grow and be together, To earn that Romance, because they were freely giving that love.
It'd probably be one of my Top Ships, but. It isn't. Not in Canon at least.

Rwby still isn't the best but my autistic brain won't let me let go of it but the most recent season is probably the best overall. It's hard to beat the best parts of 3 but there are also some garbage parts in 3 as well.
They actually flesh out Ruby and give her something to struggle with and question her goals. There were some issues near the end since the team had to cut 3 episodes I think(?) But it's decent.
I'm not saying watch it but if you had the inkling towards it I liked it a fair bit. It's hard to recommend since they set up some character and plot stuff in 8 which also isn't bad but isn't great either outside of one fight scene which was honestly the best since early rwby
I don't doubt that theyre gonna continue to have better seasons, better episodes, cool moments, good fights, and some of their concepts well realized I appreciate you recognizing that that doesn't mean I should watch it. Because at the end of the day the issue is they lost my trust. Especially considering some of the more insane shit I've heard about some of the worse moments, I just dont have the heart to... care anymore I used to reserve a lot of brain space for RWBY too. In some ways I still do. It's a fascinating case study on so many aspects of how not to write a show. And in a lot of ways, it's inspired me to do my own concepts which are based off ideas they started or sparked within me I still like Weiss. I still like some of the stuff with Ozpin. I still like Neo. I still like some of the villains, and I still like Qrow's semblance (even thought it really should have been his curse rather than the bird thing!?) I own figures of Weiss and Ren! I drew fanart of the RWBY crew and gifted it to their VA's! By far one of the most positive experiences I've had with my art btw! Shoutouts to all of them for being so fuckin enthused for my amatuer artwork! Ultimately. It just stopped being worth my energy to me when I realized it was likely going to continue to stumble and fall and never hit its stride RWBY meant a lot to me. I wish it was "means". But I'm pretty much done investing time into it

Not to be a downer, I'm minding my business when the recommended posts in tumblr dot com shows me this stuff (this is a vent blog) (sort of) but seeing Simon being paired with Alex from RWRB as fellow bisexuals instantly activates my fight or flight instinct. I get wanting representation, but... you have an explicitly bisexual character who goes through an arc to embrace that identity, you have him explicitly telling you, directly and indirectly, that he has had Bisexual Feelings and so this label fits him best, and then you have Simon Snow. A character whose instinct is to be put off by being considered bi, who upon serious consideration of what bisexuality means, gives valid reasons to say no. Can't speak for everyone but as a bi person this... kinda annoys me (his reaction alone is enough for me to never want to call him bi again haha)
I've said this before with more words and more politely than this, but what gets me is that reading Simon as bi requires you to straight up ignore (or miss) half of what he tells you. Not one to be against multiple readings and interpretations, but this right here requires missing or ignoring context and words and timing and comparisons and the way entire scenes are constructed. To a certain extent I can kinda see how a casual reader might read CO alone and assume (emphasis on assume) Simon must've liked Agatha like that at the beginning (romantically, sexually) if he even dated her in the first place, but after reading the whole trilogy? (I also don't think these books are fully appreciated if you read them casually, I get new things with each new read! but I understand some of us prefer to be normal about media. Not me though!). After spending so much time thinking about Simon and Agatha and all the things they communicate and the ways they say it (easy examples: they both choose the most unromantic, uncomfortable and/or mechanical, and sometimes honestly kinda gross ways to describe physical closeness to each other, like "spit that tastes different from your own" as the only thing it's said about kissing, or "sweat that makes skin stick all together and dampen t-shirts" instead of saying they were ~embracing each other~ or some shit. It's dry and undesirable – nothing romantic or sexual is coloring these descriptions, and they are different from, for example, Simon thinking Baz smells bad but "wild horses couldn't drag him away from him," or Baz thinking that Simon's morning breath stinks but he doesn't mind because it's Simon).
I used to not mind bi Simon headcanons, but nowadays it simply activates my fight or flight, because I can no longer help but see bi Simon as synonymous with the belief that he was sexually attracted to Agatha, and that to me is a "yikes," a "fuck no" and perhaps even a "what are we even doing here, this was addressed, we can read." Again, I can only speak for myself: anything involving those two to say "bisexuality" is simply a no from me. I don't want these, thank you. (Although I have never seen Agatha being hc as bi, she's always either in the ace spectrum or a lesbian, and to those I raise: these characters are mirrors). The other examples of just missing or ignoring half of what Simon says: the ren faire. Simon says he's "not mad about seeing cleavage" and that has been used to say dude is a woman liker. But that ignores how he says just in the previous sentence, while looking at boobs "I still haven't figured out what my deal is, but is in this moment, while I'm looking at boobs, that I consider that if I was ever attracted to women, those days might be over. [Still looking at boobs] perhaps I never liked women in the first place, perhaps I'm a Baz-sexual, which means I'm considering in this moment, while I'm [I cannot stress this enough] still looking at boobs, that I might only experience sexual attraction towards Baz." Call me crazy, but as a boobie-liker, the idea of a dude looking at boobs and thinking about how "perhaps he's no longer or maybe never was into women in the first place, maybe he's just into this one guy" is not the thought process of someone who's actually into boobs. I actually wrote a post about the ways boobs are portrayed in the ren faire somewhere, and Simon spends the whole time not noticing boobs that are in his fucking face, with writing choices like him going a little green at the same time that boobs are almost in contact with his person, and how he is thinking this with boobs that he sees at a comfortable distance. He's cool with cleavage, but he's not interested like that, especially because he never fucking notices outside of this particular place where is impossible not to, and even then he doesn't even notice when they're in his face! (Compare that with how Baz showing chest goes with "good enough to eat" which is indicative of wanting to do something about it, of a reaction linked to hunger). Or how, and I've said this many times, his "inanimate objects are attracted to Agatha" is some good ol' overcompensation, it comes in a moment where he's bullshitting (he tells Baz he doesn't like him; he was thinking just how much he likes him like 20 minutes or so before this conversation) to avoid processing, and how he's telling on his ass by using things that do not experience emotions or have the ability to choose in this example (the was no processing or feelings with Agatha)
In short: good ol' Simon is not bi, and saying the girl is cute or that he's cool with cleavage doesn't really contradict that. A gay person could say that. Baz notices beautiful and gorgeous girls, and it doesn't mean shit other than he has eyes. (I'm not accusing anyone of this, and I haven't seen anything that gives me this impression, but thinking about it, I also kinda resent the implication that being cool with women showing skin can only mean horniness. Surely we can be cool with showing skin regardless of whether or not we want to fuck) Fandom spaces putting Simon in "bi characters" lists is... whatever I guess, but since he's canonically unlabeled, honestly? it can be a disservice to the series. Recommending this as "has a bi character as the main" is misleading! You're setting this up for people walking away from it pissed! I've actually seen people tearing this appart because they are approaching it with certain expectations (and maybe also just not really paying attention to details) instead of engaging with it on its own terms. I mean, imagine being recommended something or being led to believe "it has bi rep" and then when the word actually comes up the character is like "whaaaa? hell no, take it away!" Probably wouldn't react too positively to that one, would you

do you have different costumes when you work at the ren faire or do you just have one?
So I mean, I've been involved in the same faire since I was like 12 so I've had different costumes over the years—but it's not crazy to go a few years in a row in the same basic outfit (maybe with some new/altered accessories and stuff though or new embellishments added) if portraying the same sort of role. I used to be a townsperson in the earlier years but the last few we had it I was a fairy, so obviously very different Vibes between those sorts of roles.

Boy oh boy, it has been a weird couple of weeks. Ordered some stuff for a costume for the Ren Faire, only for most of it to have some sort of snafu in getting here properly. And when I was checking my mail, I broke my phone screen, for the first time since I've had a phone. And it didn't just crack in one place, it pretty much shattered.
The phone itself still worked, but only if you wanted glass in your fingers. The place I arranged to have it fixed was closed when I drove out there to check, so I called the next couple of days, and though I didn't get an answer, it didn't go right to "this store is closed" message, so I went BACK when I didn't get that message......only for the store to still be closed.
So I'm on the phone with my dad, trying to navigate on this broken screen carefully enough to get this changed so I can maybe go to a different store, which I did eventually do. Only for the guy at that store to essentially tell me "Yeah, uh, that other store might not ever be open again."
But anyway, I got my phone fixed, and I finally got all the pieces I ordered, so it worked out okay in the end, but boy it's been a weird few weeks.

15 Questions for 15 Friends
Tagged by @emery-matsushita-vt
Are you named after anyone? Yeah, I named myself after an author, with a bit of remixing for plausible deniability.
When was the last time you cried? Honestly, I'm not sure. I think I've got most of that out of me.
Do you have kids? Nope, and I even got a doctor to ensure that'll never happen. Best of luck to you and keep up the good work, parents, but that life isn't for me.
What sports do/have you played? Is mini golf a sport? Dance Dance Revolution?? I am not a sports boy.
Do you use sarcasm? Yeah, but mostly for laughs, not confronting people. I'd rather be straightforward when there's actually a problem.
What's the first thing you notice about people? Probably what they're doing. I'm exceedingly bad at retaining faces and names, so I struggle to describe people past, like, "the guy who was selling pickles at a ren faire" or "that archer that does pole dancing".
What's your eye color? A bit of blue, a bit of red.
Scary movies or happy endings? There's a time and place for both. It's more about whether the story was crafted with passion. The Thing and Princess Bride hold equal place in my heart.
Any talents? I can draw well enough, and I'm decent at singing when I stay in my range.
Where were you born? A hospital, by c-section apparently. The first thing I did was stubbornly refuse to come quietly into the daylight and I stand by that decision.
What are your hobbies? Mostly gaming (both tabletop and video) and drawing stuff on the computer. I don't really do TV but audio dramas have gripped me recently. If I can find a good piece of media, I love to vivisect that shit. When I find a good creator, I will lose myself in their art, tracing leitmotifs like capillaries to document how they permeate the body of a work. Admiring how form is inseparable from function if you want a thing to live, to breathe.
Do you have any pets? Unfortunately not. Damn lease agreement.
How tall are you. As many inches as they gave me.
Favorite subject in school? English. I've always been a reader and who can say "no" to story time? I was even on board for spelling and grammar because being able to communicate precisely has obvious, universal application.
Dream job? I do not dream of labor. I just want to create whatever thing is sizzling my brain at the moment and survive. It's difficult to be a professional dabbler these days.

I'm not so great at tagging people, so consider yourself tagged if you see this. Or not if you don't wanna. I'm not your dad.

I mean yeah it all comes back to her being a reylo, the way people still talk about them shocks me. Idk if i've ever seen shippers from such a mainstream popular ship get treated this way when honestly....reylo isn't even that problematic. I would argue something like darklina is more problematic and those shippers don't get 1/3 of the shit reylos get. Hell I could name you other more problematic ships where the shippers don't get nearly as much hate as reylos.
Well, to be very fair a lot of reylos said a lot of out of pocket, racist (and specifically antiblack) shit about John Boyega and Finn. I don't want to downplay the shit John Boyega went through making those movies.
And in turn, a lot of finnreys said some really fucked up, racist (specifically anti-Asian) shit about Kelly Marie Tran and Rose... and I do think that gets downplayed a LOT. Like, if we're going to talk about racist fandom antics in SW, and there are a lot of them, then let's talk about all of it. Obviously, all of this goes beyond shipping, but the interesting phenomenon that did happen with the reylo stuff is that because they didn't want Rey with Finn, many of them did support Finnrose (and by the way, lol--I'm not into Finnrey because in general I don't like Rey outside of TLJ and I frankly though Finn deserved better on every level, and I wouldn't consider myself a Reylo, but I AM into Finnrose, and to a lesser extent Finnpoe). For some, I do think that was a "get Finn out of Rey's path" thing, for sure--but also, setting Finn up with a cool pretty girl to get him away from Rey is... not the worst thing lol. And I would also say that many did seem to genuinely like that ship, and a lot of the reylo fic authors I saw back in the day used to write some good Finnrose shit.
(Also: Roselo? Let's get into it. I would kill for Rian to cast Adam and Kelly in a Benoit Blanc movie, the chances that Adam would do it are MIDDLING but still.)
I think the main reason why the reylo thing got much bigger, tbh, is that it's Star Wars. Darklina is in theory more problematic (though to me it's very much a draw because while I personally do not find Kylo Ren as like, threatening as the Darkling, he's still a prominent cog in a dictatorial fascist-aligned regime and he did kill a lot of innocent people, so, you know, fair) but S&B is NOTHING compared to SW. I think in general shippers are loathed by a lot of old school SW die-hards because Shipping = Kissing and Kissing is Gross, and Bad People Bad, except for Vader because Vader Cool. They make exceptions for Han and Leia because they still jerk it to Leia to this day and it's a part of the old lore, and a lot of them just want to be Han Solo in a way I don't think a lot of them wanted to be Kylo Ren.
And then you combine that with the morality police who really just like. Didn't like reylo for whatever reason, but decided to take on the idea that it's HORRRRRIIIIIBLEEEE to ship a bad guy with someone (when like--I personally cannot STAND Anidala, but you would have no SW if a bad guy hadn't fucked someone back in the day... tepidly, I imagine, but it happened). The idea of using moral righteousness to justify your ship has always been a thing, right? (If we're keeping it real here: while I do think that a lot of reylo antis were genuinely concerned about racism with that ship, I also think that many of the white antis.... were only concerned with racism when it suited them. I mean, where were they when Kelly was getting death threats? Care about it for everyone, you know?) But I think it became a much bigger thing when it was reylo.
Then in turn, the reylos reacted by becoming more cultlike, because that's what happens when you vilify people for wanting to ship something. And they became wackier, and the lore became more kNOWN. Like, again--I don't personally ship reylo. I find the dynamic compelling in TLJ; I think Adam and Daisy have great chemistry in that movie; I think that he and Rian pulled her best work in the trilogy out of her; and I think that that movie is the only one where Rey feels like an actual human being, versus a girlboss cypher. She's human, she idolizes Luke and then realizes he's only human, she experiences disappointment, she experiences DOUBT about morality, she is, I believe, genuinely pretty horny for Kylo Ren in that movie (imo, Rey probably has like, zero sexual experience lol, but I also doubt that he has much either), and the idea of her wanting to be SOMETHING only to find out she's NOT THAT is really interesting. I find the idea of her being tempted to become his Dark Empress or whatever, and the idea of him being both an incredibly weird, dark, amoral person who's all about assuaging his own Feelings because mommy and daddy didn't love him the way he wanted them to... and someone who else wants this girl to bounce on it as his Dark Empress.... really interests me.
I didn't want to see them have babies. I didn't want to see them be happily ever after. I wanted to see her kill him while kissing him or something. Which I don't think was what a lot of reylos wanted, right? So it kind of made that ship inaccessible to me, and I imagine a lot of people who might've otherwise been into it. And I think things like "grey force babies" or whatever naturally made it seem more ridic, which of course happens with any ship (BOATBABY.......) but the size of the fandom and the ship made it seem bigger.
But because that ship was so archetypal (big bad man, girl onto which you could project whatever you wanted because she has like zero personality in 2/3 movies) it was easier for allll of these fic writers to do whatever they wanted with the dynamic, to pass the fic around, to do weird shit with it. And I think that tends to happen with bad/good ships. The fic writers have something very iconic to cling to, and they can do more with it, and therefore the fic is better, and that makes the ship bigger. The ship evolves into the fanon version, and then everyone who hates it hates it more because that ship is getting what they want. It reminds me of Darklina, Dramione (and for the record Dramione is something like... Go with God, but I do nOT. GET. THE DRAMIONE RENAISSANCE LOL.), Haladriel. Because reylo was again, so big though, there were more writers and more types of fic and it just got More More More.
So yeah, I think it's all kind of a snake eating its own tail thing. And now everyone who hated reylo anyway hates it even more because of all these reylo authors getting book deals, and often having solid success (or better). You can make a lot of critiques about why that's happening with a white ship versus a ship featuring poc, but that's beyond reylo and gets into fandom racism and racism in publishing AT LARGE. It's a bigger thing than just "the reylos did this".
But yeah, I personally don't really find Reylo all that shocking or perverse a ship. I've shipped worse lol. I just think there are a lot of really complicated things that have less to do with the SHIP than the shipping culture. Some of those things are super valid. However, I also think that this narrative occurred wherein it was like "the only toxic ones are the reylos" and... Yeah dude, there were plenty of toxic reylos. However... The Kelly Marie Tran of it all is where I really start getting bugged, because what happened to her and her character was one of the grossest things that happened in that franchise, and LET US BE REAL, the driving force behind that was not the reylos. (Nor do I want to imply that it was all finnreys--a lot of the SW fandom in general is super fucked re: basically any people of color in prominent roles.)
