Pokémon Scarlet & Violet anime adaption Ash version.

After another adventure with old friends and foiling Team Rocket’s schemes yet again, the young Champion Ash Ketchum gets an invite to visit the illustrious Orange-Grape Academy in the Paldea Region. He is offered a student teaching position to speak of his experiences in Pokémon Battling as well as get offered a chance to compete in the Blueberry League and fight the local Elite Four.

After being seen off by his current traveling companions, who decide to stay in Kanto to surprise visit their little cousin Liko at Indigo Academy, Ash enrolls at Paldea, starting fresh once more with Pikachu at his side.

Team Rocket, overhearing the matter, decide to infiltrate the school disguised as the RAs of Ash’s dorm in an attempt to get Pikachu, and if possible, nab every Pokémon at the facility.

Ash’s students include Nemona, Arven, Penny, and new character Alfie, an exchange student from Galar who looks up to Ash. These two share a big brother-little brother dynamic and form a duo. Completing the trio is Iono, another student teacher and popular streamer of Paldea. She handles the school’s audio visual arts, and helps fund the school with her videos.

Ash quickly finds Champion life isn’t what it’s cracked up to be, as Iono has made it her mission to document the life of the new World Champ, and films him every waking moment no matter what he’s doing, while Nemona is a teacher’s pet, and as a fellow Champion herself, desperately wants Ash to be her rival. While Ash and Iono manage to get along after finding a compromise (as well as being forced to room together), Nemona proves to be the more annoyingly persistent one that even Team Rocket (disguised or not) has had to step in between on occasion. Nemona openly hates Team Rocket, mostly because of how they interfere in her quest to get Ash to be her rival, and her Pawmo has sent them flying off with a single punch more than once.

Ash works under Director Clavell, who in this universe is a little more eccentric and tries to be more openly “with it” to appeal to the children of the academy. He’s not particularly good at it: he seems somewhat stuck in the 90’s, but he means well and is respected, and someone Ash can go to for advice when unable to talk to his father figure Kukui. When Team Star causes trouble on the school grounds, Clavell often turns to Ash and his friends to “set them straight”. Team Rocket form a rivalry with Team Star and find them tacky and annoying. Like with Team Skull, they often clash with a trio of younger grunts that are analogous to Jessie, James and Meowth. There has at least been one clash between them that involved a weaponized Starmobile and weaponized Meowth balloon mecha.

Team Rocket is instructed to take Giovanni’s teenage nephew Lorenzo under their wing to teach him the ropes. He is functionally the Amethio equivalent, only far less rigid but not any less goal oriented. While he finds TR bizarre, he develops a begrudging respect for the trio. He has some deep rooted issues that see him exploited by the Four Disaster Pokémon. He isn’t a permanent fixture of the group and attends the Academy to learn about Paldea and its Pokémon to benefit Team Rocket while Jessie and James scheme to get Pikachu and the school’s Pokémon.

Goh and Gary meanwhile have reunited and form a research team investigating sightings of the Paradox Pokémon. A running gag is they tend to get distracted by other matters, and often miss the Paradox who is standing right behind them, wondering what they’re doing before wandering off. They host segments on Paldean Pokémon at the end of the episode and are occasionally joined by Professor Oak offering his own opinions and comedic timing to the proceedings. It’s stated on occasion Gary has worked with Friede of the Rising Voltekkars in the past on Pokémon research. Later on in the story, Ash’s group and Team Rocket start having their own experiences with the Paradox and Titan Pokemon, leading to a team up with Goh and Gary to get to the bottom of the matter. Ash’s Orthworm is actually a Titan Pokémon that has an addiction to Herba Mystica, and is a little pathetic, but with Ash’s help, it slowly quits the habit and becomes a capable battler. It had a rivalry from fellow Titan, Klawf, that Team Rocket egged on as a means to be able to control a Titan for their purposes, if temporarily.

Some of the visual glitches are used for comedic purposes, like Ash’s Fuecoco falling into a lake, or Team Rocket getting buggy eyed when a situation goes hairy. The creepy stretched out Player avatar is seen as a sculpture in Brassius’s art class as well.

The Paradox/Titan Pokémon and Arven’s plot are the first major story arc, followed up by the Teal Mask DLC and confrontation with the Four Disasters as the second major arc with the Blueberry League and a related final confrontation with Team Star closing out the series. While the Teal Mask DLC is the main focus, Indigo Disk material outside of the Blueberry League is partly dependent on what Horizons does with Terapagos and if Liko and Ash meet canonically at all.

Ash and James are a major part of Arven’s arc, the three bonding over food and shared love of dog Pokémon. (James doubly so because of Greavard and Growlie.) Greavard is also the return of the loving Pokémon that injures James archetype, accidentally draining his life force when it happily pounces on him. It once slept on top of James during the night and almost killed him. It returns life force by giving James a big sloppy lick in the face.

Alfie: G-Slowpoke*, Quaxly, Toedscool, Eiscue, Fidough*, Chewtle*

Iono: Bellibolt, Porygon*, Toxel*, Sandy Shocks, Jolteon

Jessie: Wobuffet, Scovillain, Lechonk*

James: Tandemaus*, Poltchageist, Greavard

Lorenzo: Maschiff*, Spidops, G-Meowth, Charcadet*

Supporting Pokémon: Miraidon: A Legendary Pokémon Ash befriends. Ash, Alfie, and Arven nurse it back to health during the early Paradox plot, and it becomes loyal to Ash, sticking with him to the end of the adventure. It has a bit of a Speed Buggy type personality and speech impediment, and drives Ash around campus and later to the Kitakami Region.

Bombirdier: A new courier employed at Team Rocket taking over Delibird’s job. It’s strongly suggested it did a hostile take over of the position… Besides Delibird, it also hates Iron Bundle, mistaking it for Delibird. It has a cruel personality and enjoys dropping heavy deliveries on Team Rocket.

Scream Tail: A little weirdo who pesters both factions. Analogous to the original Jigglypuff, and first encountered by Goh’s group. Seems to have found camaraderie in Team Star.

Iron Bundle: Encountered by Goh’s team, but more properly encountered by Team Rocket. It seems to want to help out people, but also doesn’t abide nonsense, blasting people and Pokémon that anger it with its blaster bag. Seems to have found a place at the Academy’s school store. It has a personality and mannerisms similar to Bubo the robot owl from Clash of the Titans.

Tinkaton: The Bewear equivalent that harasses Team Rocket and occasionally Ash’s group. Its primary motivation is to get James’ bottle caps to bling its hammer, and appears in all manner of crazy ways to acquire them. It once led a squad of its own family of Tinkatuffs riding Cyclizars after Team Rocket during the middle of a Pikachu operation to accomplish this. Team Rocket also once made the mistake of piloting a Corviknight mecha in its presence unknowingly….

Gimmighoul: Another weirdo that took residence in Team Rocket’s dorm room and started playing havoc with their finances and that of the school’s. It takes a fancy to James’ bottle caps also, and forms a friendship with Tinkaton. Its various Gimmighoul Coins are scattered around Paldea, with Ash, Iono, Alfie, Meowth and others having found at least one in passing not knowing what it was but kept it. Gimmighoul, after experimenting with James’ bottle caps, manages to collect its G-Coins and evolve into Gholdengo. Iono affectionately nicknames Gimmighoul/Gholdengo “Earl” after a particular video game character she likes. Has mannerisms and speech patterns similar to Digit the Cockroach from An American Tail as Gimmighoul.

Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti: The mysterious, mildly eccentric Pokémon of the Kitakami Region. They choose Ash, Team Rocket, Alfie and Iono to assist in preventing a coming disaster that threatens Paldea and Kitakami. Ogerpon’s role is pending further DLC information.

Below the readmore is a fuck ton of Larry Headcannons because I am Unwell about this man.

Larry was originally from Sinnoh. Sinnoh is based on the Japanese Island of Hokkaido, and with the way the Treasure Eatery is designed, and the pose Larry takes in his photo, he comes across as Japanese. Plus, Sinnoh specifically has Starly as the regional bird.

Starly was actually his very first Pokémon. He attempted a Pokémon Journey as a kid, but after a little while he just wanted to go back home. Still, the battle experience was good for him, and he really cared for his Starly as a pet.

He moved to Paldea go the Academy for either high school or college, wanting to ensure he got a good job in the future. The Academy seems to host all ages, and it's rather huge, so I think it could serve as a collage campus as well, but idk.

Occasionally he'd fight with his Staravia as a hobby and to make a bit of money whenever things got tight, picking up Dunsparce and Komala as well. Still, he ends up pretty good at it.

While he's there, he meets a younger Geeta who challenges him to battle. He does well enough to impress her, and they don't quite become friends, but Geeta trusts him and sees him as a particularly hard worker. Maybe they're acquaintances in the same friend group.

Eventually this leads to assigning him to the Medali Gym, and then becoming an Elite Four member.

The Medali Gym is in the Treasure Eatery because the first time he ate there, the food really reminded him of home, so he became a regular. He was put on the spot by Geeta to come up with where he wanted his gym, what he wanted it to look like, and what the gym challenge should be. Himself and the cook get along okay, and he told her about how stressed he was about it because he's not creative or intresting in the slightest, and she suggested just hosting him in-house, and he agreed.

Him and Rika get along fine, she thinks he's fun to mess with but he doesn't mind it so badly.

He tries to be nice to Poppy, but he's still a very boring person, so she likes him okay but prefers the other two.

He very silently does not like Hassel because he's loud and frequently interrupts Larry, but Larry would never cause workplace drama so he just... treats him like he would anyone else. With how famous the Elite Four are, any noticeable degree of dislike could garner some serious attention, which he doesn't want. Hassel thinks Larry is nice but introverted, a testament to just how anti-drama Larry is.

His relationship with Geeta has slowly shifted from mutual trust and neutrality to her still feeling the same about him, but him developing a grudge against her but refusing to speak up about anything that's bothering him. She's his boss and the top champion, and he wouldn't be caught dead actually saying anything to someone that powerful.

One time, while Iono was doing a series of inviting other gym leaders to her livestreams, she was very certain she would be unable to get Larry in front of the camera, and repeatedly told her chat that she'd try, but make no promises. But she appealed to his intrest in food, so they sat down and had a meal for the stream, talking a bit about his perspective on Pokemon training.

But, for some reason that not even Iono understands, her chat went fucking crazy. Like, Jerma-Chat levels of insane. Larry vows to never let her film him again, but she becomes absolutely determined to get him back on someday because of just how popular that stream got.

While at some Gym Trainer conference or party or something, Larry was off to the side of the group not talking to anyone. Like, at the watercooler, coffee machine, or snack bar for as long as he could pretend to be busy. Grusha joined him there because he got overwhelmed too and needed to sit down and be quiet for a minute. The both of them shared a look and a toast to mutual suffering, and neither of them bothered each other. From then on, they've been quite friendly, and whenever trainers gather, they stick together and try to find somewhere quiet to sit.

For his relationships with the other trainers, it's just the quieter they are, the better he likes them. He doesn't have a lot of energy left after work, so whoever he is with has to learn to chill, or otherwise be quietly disliked and avoided. As for when he likes people, he'll pay for their food sometimes, and just chill out with them and have conversation, a lot of the times complaining about work.

I have been struck with a great idea! What if Iono has a donation event on her livestream, when the donations reach a certain goal, she will get Larry to smile. Iono, of course, does not tell Larry how she will get him to smile. She succeeds and needless to say, he does feel a little less stressed by the end :)

“‘Ello, ‘ello, hola! Ciao and Bonjour!” Iono takes up the whole screen in front of the camera, waving her arms with her long yellow sleeves to all the viewers just tuning in. “Welcome to the Iono Zone!”

She plops back into her pink gaming chair, revealing not only the neon star lights behind her on the colorful set, but also fellow gym leader Larry sitting beside her in a black gaming chair of his own, attired in the white dress shirt and sky-colored tie he usually has on under his suit.

“Today we have a special guest!” Iono gestures to Larry with both of her arms, “Iiiiit’s the leader of the Medali Gym, Larryyyyyyy!”

“Hello, everyone,” Larry responds in a monotonic voice, unfazed by Iono’s energetic enthusiasm. His eyes momentarily peek at the camera before quickly glancing away.

“We have somethin’ extra special planned for this stream!” Iono smiles with her little shark teeth. “As you probably know, the Treasure Eatery is holdin’ an event of sorts soon and they need donations to make it grand! Hence why we’re both here to help earn some sweet, sweet Pokédollars for a good cause!” Iono smirks into her sleeve and whispers to herself, “It doesn’t hurt to get those subscriber numbers up either!” She raises her voice. “Anywho! Larry and I have incentives for each donation goal we hit, which you can see on the screen, so make sure to donate! Right Larry?”

“Agreed,” the man says with a rigid posture and a small, stiff nod.

“Wowzah! We hit our next goal!” Iono exclaims.

“Then, let’s officially start the stream!” Iono cheers and begins her intro. “Your eyeballs are MINE—caught in my Electroweb! Whosawhatsit? Iono!” She motions towards her fellow gym leader again. “Aaaand Larry! Let’s go!”

In the middle of guessing pokemon names just by a picture of their silhouettes, Iono and Larry hear the donation alert go off with a celebratory ring, followed by the audio of a joyous pikachu cry. The streamer looks back at her screen to view the numbers.

“That was quite fast.”

“Well, the viewers really want to see the next incentive! Which is…da da da!” Iono checks her computer monitor on the side to remind herself of what’s next on the list. She giggles. “Oooh! I’m super excited for this one! Iiiit’s ‘Getting Larry to Smile!’”

“What?” Larry tilts his head to the side, more confused if anything. “Why would people want to see me smile?”

“Because you always got on that same brooding expression. We need to brighten your face up like a lightbulb!” She turns to the camera. “Isn’t that right, loyal viewers?”

Iono’s stream chat flies with excitement. It seems they want to see this as much as she does.

“Nyhohoho! That’s what I thought! So how should we go about makin’ him smile?” Iono ends her sentence with a grin towards Larry. The normal type gym leader simply sits back with tense shoulders and follows along with whatever the girl has planned.

One comment in the chat goes by saying: “Jokes!”

“Oooo, I like your thinking, Electro King!” Iono responds to the chat.

Another says: “Funny videos!”

“Yeah! Solid answers! But I’m thinkin’ of something a liiiittle different. You all want to see what I’m thinking?” Iono’s shark toothed grin grows even wider. The chat floods with yeses and “Show us!”

Larry cuts in, “Hm? What else could make someone smile other than jokes or funny videos?”

“Oh, you’ll see my dear Larry! In fact, I’ll make it a surprise! Close your eyes!”

“What?”

“C’mon! Close ‘em! You don’t want to keep all the fans waiting!”

“Alright then.” Larry does as she asks and closes his eyes.

“Coolio! So on the count of three we’re all going to surprise Larry! Ready everyone?” she says to the audience, then twists her chair to the side to face her fellow gym leader.

“One…Two…” Iono’s smile beams. She lifts her hands up and wiggles her fingers in the air so they're visible to the camera, snickering as she does so. “Three!” she launches her hands towards his sides.

“Ack!” Larry jumps in his chair and shoots his eyes open. “Iono! What are you—” After the initial shock wears off, Larry shuts his mouth closed as a wobbly smile suddenly forms on his face. Small, huffy, but still audible giggles start to slip out of him.

“I’m tickling you silly!” Iono exclaims as her fingers wiggle into his sides through the fabric of his dress shirt. Larry wraps his arms around his middle and turns his head into his shoulder to try and hide his silly expression from view, but Iono catches a glimpse of it. “And look at that! You’re smiling! It’s a wobbly one, but you’re smiling!”

Larry buries his head deeper into his shoulder, his twitching smile only growing. “Ionohoho!”

“Buuut, I bet that smile can be even bigger!” the streamer exclaims while Larry tries to slightly twist from side to side in his chair. “Let’s play a game! It’s called ‘Find the Tickle Spot!’ Everyone watching at home can play along too!”

“Nohoho! Dohohon’t!” Larry’s giggles slowly become more audible the higher the girl climbs her hand up his sides.

“Let’s see…” Iono lightheartedly ignores his request. “How about the stomach?” The streamer moves one of her hands to his belly and Larry lets out a squeak of giggles, leaning forward in his chair to curl up his middle.

“Not bad, not bad. Now how about the armpits?” Iono shoots her hands to his underarms and Larry yelps through his giggles, clamping his arms down and rolling back in his chair a little when he kicks his legs out in reflex.

“Ooo, we’re getting close! But where else should we try?” Iono teases. She glances over at the chat, seeing a comment that says: “Try his ribs!”

“His ribs? You got it!”

“Wait! Not the—AH!” Larry bursts into deep laughter when Iono dives her hands into the bones of his ribs. The joyful sounds that were being held back now spilled through the broken barrier of his smile for everyone to hear. He falls back in his seat while squeezing his arms to his sides, squirming around in his chair and swinging his legs at the air above the ground.

“Ha ha! We got ‘im!” Iono then scribbles around his torso at the other places she tried before, now getting larger reactions. “And it looks like that activated these other spots too!”

“Ionohohohoho!” Larry curls himself up in an attempt to avoid the girl’s hands that were like magnets to his metallic ticklish spots. Wherever he wiggled, Iono would still find a place to get him to giggle.

“You know, for someone who also hangs out with flying types, you would think that he would adapt to his ticklishness! Imagine being around all those feathers!” Iono entertains her audience with commentary while Larry continues giggling from under her fingers.

“Thehehey dohohon’t try to tihihickle mehehe ohohon puhuhuhurpose!” Larry exclaims.

“Ah, true true. Unlike me. An electric type trainer! Bzzzt!” Iono vibrates her clawed fingers into his ribs like they were thunderbolts producing tickly shocks. Larry’s laughter immediately rises in pitch and he tosses his head back into his chair.

Iono giggles at his reaction. “Zap! It’s super effective!”

“Ionohohohoho!” Larry nearly leans halfway off his seat to escape the girl's playful tickles, “I cahahan’t tahahake anymohohore! Plehehease!”

The electric gym leader chuckles. “Okay, okay. You got it friendo!” She removes her hands away and the man slumps forward. He wraps his arms around his rising and falling chest while leftover giggles still trickle out of him, before he drops back in his chair to relax.

“Sooo, how do you feel?” Iono asks with an excited lean.

Larry takes a moment to regain his breath. “Tingly…”

“No no no, not that silly! How do you feel?”

Larry glances at the girl. “Huh?”

“Well, I saw that you were a little stiff and tense being on your first stream and all, so I thought to loosen you up!” Iono explains with a grin. “So, do you feel less stressed? We need to know if the Iono secret remedy works!”

Larry blinks at the girl. He slowly sits himself up in his chair and removes his hands from his middle. His back and shoulders are less tense and his breathing becomes still. He takes a moment to examine the rest of the muscles in his body, feeling that they’re no longer ridgid. He glances at the other gym leader, dumbfounded at how well it did the trick. “I suppose I do feel less stressed.”

“Then the donation goal, ‘Get Larry to Smile’ is complete!” Iono throws her hands up in the air. Larry huffs out a small laugh, his way of showing amusement and thanks for his fellow gym leader.

“Alright then! Are you ready to have some more stress-free fun?” Iono asks with energetic glee.

The man lifts up his head. A faint, but cheerful smile still lingers on his face. “Ready,” he nods.

Iono grins back. Her electrifying energy surges through the room, reaching to those watching from afar, and to those right beside her. “Now that’s what I like to hear!”

Liberate the Internet -- Levels of Control

I've been thinking a lot about the way the internet has shrunk to just a few major platforms that can boost or silence us at a moment's notice.

I wanted to make a post talking about different types of platforms and the ways that they control what we see or say.

(disclaimer: I'm not an expert on this and am trying to start a conversation, so if you have more information or corrections please reblog and add / put in the comments / message me)

I'm not saying everyone needs to become experts on self-hosting (I don't know too much about it myself). There are options for people at all levels. So let's take a look.

Algorithms and Rules

This is your TikToks and your Facebooks. Here, all it takes is the algorithm being tweaked to suppress keywords or accounts and suddenly your content isn't being seen.

The pros here of course is that when you're not actively being suppressed, you have a much higher chance at reaching new people vs other options.

Moderated Spaces

Today, these platforms are generally separated into individual communities (think, MightyNetworks/Circle, Discord, forums, etc.). Reach is limited and niche, and content moderation is generally done by human beings instead of algorithms (with some exceptions).

The pros in these spaces are that you have stronger connections to people who will see your content, but your reach is narrower. As a community you get to decide what happens inside your group, but with the platform itself still in control, they could easily shut down an entire community if they wanted to.

Website Builders / Hosting

This is your Wordpress blogs, Blogger, and even Neocities, etc. Here, the website is mostly yours. You get to decide what's on it. Your content isn't being directly moderated or censored. But you're still part of a larger platform that helps connect / promote your site to others.

Pros here are of course you have MUCH more leeway in what you can post / share. Cons are that there is a lot less chance compared to some others for your website content to reach people. Also, your blog / site can in theory be disabled by the host platform if they decided to.

There's also using something like GoDaddy or IONOS or some other website hosting thing. There's a lot of variety and crossover in this area but basically the website belongs to you more than say a Wordpress Blog would. In theory the web host could decide to drop you but I think that's pretty rare.

Self-Hosting

This is now territory I'm not very familiar with but you could in theory fully host your own stuff making it harder for anyone to shut you down. There's even creating your own internet networks but that's way beyond me. (Really cool tho, I'd love to learn.)

Email Lists

This one is very different but I think really important. Email lists / mailing lists are not just for businesses wanting to promote their latest sale or latest online course. This is one of the most DIRECT ways you can have access to your followers if they're interested in what you have to say. No matter what happens to any platform, if you have their emails you will likely retain the ability to contact them (unless email is somehow destroyed but at that point I think we'll be having very different conversations)

(This could even be physical addresses or an old-school mailing list)

I bring this up because I'm really interested in moving toward a more autonomous and networked internet, and I think it's going to be necessary in the years to come.

Look up digital gardens for an example.

And if you're hoping to create / share anything online, consider diversifying the kinds of platforms you use, and pushing followers to places where you have more control over what you can share, and getting their emails.

Lucky Garchomp Raffle Results

Did everyone save up their postcards? Because it's time for the Lucky Garchomp Raffle! Opening up on television as well as all available streaming services! Coming to you live as a guest for the festival....

"Ladies and gentlemen and Iono Zone faithful! 'Ello,'ello, hola. Ciao and bonjour! Your eyeballs are mine, caught in my electroweb! Whosawhatsits? It's Iono!"

The colorful hostess of the Iono Zone stream series was on screen, giving everyone her sharp smile and cheerful attitude. Next to her was a giant wheel with a variety of numers. Her hand idly played with it, just itching to spin it round and round...

"I'll be your host for this year's Lucky Raffle, the theme...GARCHOMP! RAWR RAWR! I'm doing a sweet collab with Jubilife TV! Heeeeey, Sinnoh! WHAT'S UP?!"

Grinning, she gestured to a different side of the room where the main prizes today were lined up. Three nice prizes for the people who received those special postcards found only during new years.

"There are 3 prizes, one per lucky person. First places gets this lovely Garchompite, courtesy of Lysander Labs! Second place gets a life sized Garchomp plushie, produced by the Safari Zone and third place is a set of 10 Hyper Potions, brought to you in conjunction by PokeMart and the Sinnoh League!"

Nodding to herself, having done her job spelling out the prizes and their names, she was excited to get started.

"And here we go!" Stepping forward, Iono grabbed the wheel and gave it a biiiig spin!

"With a big ol' spin, here comes the first winner......lucky number 007! Congrats on your shiny new Garchompite!"

"Next up, here we go -- just gonna grab here and give it the biggest whiiiiirl-whooooo! And our next winner is...number 001! You get to walk away with a nice HUUUGE Garchomp plush! Look at this thing! It's bigger than me!"

"Last, but not least...our third and final lucky raffle winner...spin, spin, spin....! And we have 010! You get the Hyper Potion set -- bet these will come in handy!"

With the last number picked and the last prize carted off to be sent to their intended owner via Dleibird Service, it was a wrap. Iono closed off with well wishes for the New Year in her usual, bubbly way.

a p chill and uneventful week for me overall

however do want to mention, I stumbled across this bingo thing yesterday and was thinking of using it for my series list, instead of what you see under, I decided against it since I can't have the colour coding I've been using, or well, I could have it I'd just have to spend a bit of time editing it on PS instead of just copy pasting like I do now

we finally got our first capture of the anime and sadly it wasn't riko ofc this was to be expected from how the previous ep went but it's still wack next episode we're getting iono tho so that should be fun

Any thoughts about Grusha!! As in do you know him? Do you interact regularly :3

Well, of course I know him. Not well, I mean. But there's a lot of league meetings and we're both in them.... the mandatory ones, anyway. He's one of the newer leaders too, so I've been present for some of his evaluations and all. But I'm not certain if I've ever spoken to him directly. Before that, I know he was a pretty big name in his sport. I can't say I know much about snowboarding, but I happened to be in Galar when they were hosting the championships... they do all sorts of promotional stuff, you know. And I'm a fan of those replica league card packs they sell.

So that's how I really first knew about him, I suppose. And he just so happened to join our league not long after that. You want my thoughts on him... he's talented. He's pretty young too... it's a shame what happened to him. But that's life, you know. Everyone has to learn to keep their dreams mundane and stick to the safer roads sometime. I mean, trying his hand at being a gym leader as a backup plan is pretty good as it is... but I get it. This job's not all that it's cracked up to be. I've thought about talking to him once or twice. But I don't think I'm the right person for that, and I never have time anyway. It's better if I just mind my own business. Thank you for your question. I don't have many interesting insider stories or anything... you'd find better luck asking Iono. But I hope you found the answer satisfactory nonetheless.

We don’t like Iono for a reason

"Eww streamer gym leader, that’s cringe”-crowd can go sit down and let the big girls talk for a moment. We’re looking at Iono’s design and premise today.

Let’s get to the point. This is what Iono looks like in her trailer.

That is not a streamer or YT/IG/Twitter influencer setup - this is a professional pop star/idol setup. She has wacky clothing, crazy hair design with pink eyes and pointy teeth to match, and she’s in a high-production value studio with extremely fancy visuals. In addition, in the video you can also see fluent camera movement from angle to angle, and she speaks like a professional TV host or a trained idol rather than an individual influencer.

Therein lies the issue. Streamers don’t look like that. Their shows don’t look like that. Everything in that setup screams “trained professional pop star with company level production value" and Iono looks like she doesn’t even know how to edit or handle a camera that isn’t attached to a smartphone.

And before you go “but JAPANESE streamers are different” - no they’re not. Here’s screencaps from some of the most popular Japanese twitch streamers

Japanese streamers and “Western” streamers are the same. Playing video games with a camera at their desk, maybe some added visuals here and there. Streamed content by default doesn’t have high production value because the content is supposed to go on for hours often without a specified end point, and the entire appeal of the content is that it’s personal and mostly unscripted.

Even the richest influencers like Rola make content like this. Her usual self, normal clothes, in her house talking to the camera by herself or with a friend.

Contrast that with what idols and their content (music videos, concerts etc) tend to look like:

Do I even need to say which type of content Iono’s “stream” looked like?

So Iono is not a streamer, she’s a pop idol. Ok. What’s wrong with that then? Nothing, per se. We already have Raihan being a bit of a social media star, so Iono could be a pop idol for sure. But why insist on calling her a streamer/influencer? (on all languages, including original japanese) Why does she pretend to run a stream that is clearly scripted, lasts for 3 minutes and took more money to produce than an average streamer spends on all of their equipment combined?

See, I would love a streamer Gym Leader. Constantly taking videos, making everything in her life some kind of content to post. Acting a bit extra all the time, that sort of thing. I think a trailer using their content format would also be really fun. But the dissonance that comes with Iono’s design begs the question: Do the people at Gamefreak even know what streamers look like and what they do? Do they not understand the difference between individual influencers and highly curated, corporate products like idols? Have they ever... watched a single stream? Or do they know Iono belongs to a completely different group of people, but decided to call her a streamer on a whim to appeal to young people? As if it’s as simple as that. Professor Turo looks more like a streamer than Iono does at this point.

So ultimately it makes Iono’s design look out of touch. Made by people who don’t know what they’re presenting. An old man’s idea of what the kids are into these days. I don’t intend to shame anyone who finds her interesting and likes her as a character, but I would invite everyone to keep in mind that Iono is an idol, and that Gamefreak COULD have created a character who is and acts like an actual streamer, but they didn’t.

#And let's not dive into how Pokemon has started to have this trend of bringing corporations into everything.#Streamers inherently being individuals doing low effort content VS Iono supposedly being one but having corporate level Idol content #it smells you know #Not to mention how AWFUL she looks in SV graphics #the grey shading and awful hair textures #she could have looked great in SwSh even and you don't hear me praising that game's graphics often but the trainer models are great #pokemon #pokemon sv #pokemon scarlet and violet #blah blah
