i've seen people talking about this before: growing up online in the 90s and 2000s, you didn't give any personal info away including your age. that was normal defensiveness (and frankly we should still do that).
i was just thinking about my experience with that and how, many times, in my little groups of forum buddies and people I met in other online spaces, it was a SHOCK to learn their age. obviously most of them were older than me, but i guess what i didn't really think about is how that helped me be friendly with older people who are just there to enjoy things the same way you are.
now i'm on the other side of that equation. the people i run into online are more likely to be younger than me by a decade or two. there's books to be written about these topics, ageism and your presence online, but i guess what i'm getting at is: if someone in your circle of acquaintances, discord or blogs or what have you, is like 20, 30, 40 years older than you, and they're just being their pleasant self, it's not weird. treat them like you would anyone else.
same thing goes for people younger than you. don't be condescending in either direction. it wasn't long ago that you simply didn't know the other person's age. and truly, you still don't. but, yeah. the obvious thing to add here is, this is different if they're being creepy or making you uncomfortable through their behavior. but their existence isn't an affront to you if they aren't doing anything wrong

March 4, 2024 Edit of this still relevant post from February 27, 2024
For those that view any of my online presences (including my blogs)…Um, this is something for you to know.
Please save this post so it doesn’t get buried by queue.
My& Current Health Situation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I wish to communicate this to y’all now so that…I don’t end up worrying anyone when this happens. It may have been noticeable by some folks that I’m dragging, heavily. I’m not having a good time right now with my body. With this comes with an onion of issues detailing certain aspects of what I’m going through.
I know I have a lot of obligations. Not only as a creative and content creator; but as a friend, a mentor, Guardian or even older peer, and myself. I’ve neglected myself for too long. I have been noticing my vitality decrease; and my CFS and POTS flaring up further.
Social Justice is something I’m always perceiving and sensitive to; and as such, the strain I’ve noticed too late has been worsening. Includes many emotional meltdowns and outbursts from me that I can no longer control or hold back.
Trying to figure out how to exactly sort through the mass tangles of my traumatized emotional and mental state isn’t as simple as I hoped for me. While I’m creatively burned out, I am suffering Autistic burnout. A double whammy of all things.
I’m finding myself getting “stuck,” unable to physically move for hours at a time. I’d move upstairs to eat something but end up being there for what’s normally an half hour task…for nearly 2+ hours. Even so, trying to force movement to do tasks that is considered “everyone can do these” is mentally painful and physically locking. Even if I have to desperately use the bathroom when I’m about to fall asleep, my headmates (AKA alters) have to switch to co-front or “snatch me back” in order to get my body moving. That’s with the sudden rocket spike in heart rate and blood pressure, and loss of balance (at the very least).
I’m already struggling to cope with many things due to the fact that I haven’t been able to draw much at all; or create anything and write anything. Especially trying desperately to fulfill my word on things I had the energy to do, but no longer do. So much of my struggles I can’t properly transmute. It’s so upsetting.
Thus, there’s going to be a sudden and abrupt shift in posting or messaging. I don’t know when. But it is coming.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━
(Especially since I’ve been feeling mania over the weekend. All weekend, Saturday and Sunday, I manic cleaned large portions of certain areas I occupy as well as my housemate. Today I’m feeling the aching in my joints badly, with my calves swearing hell at me. I’m wearing my wrist brace too, I just…I’m rambling.)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I wish for you to know what’s happening if you don’t see or hear from me, my headmates, or any of my online presences (as depicted here: https://cjoatbysamwise.com/cjoats-links ) No one is being forgotten. I’m not abandoning anyone. I’m not ghosting anyone. What I do know (still coming to terms with it ngl) is I need to stop, fully stop, and recover. It’s looking like my body is going to do that for me by force. It’s going to be abrupt and sudden to the inconvenience of many, including my housemate, unfortunately.
I don’t know how long this will last. But I don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep “hustling” like this. Does this sound repetitive? I wanted to communicate before suddenly I’m unable.
Does this sound repetitive? I’ll end it here. I wanted to communicate before suddenly I’m unable.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I’ll end it here with how you can support me while I’m down, only able to and wish to (I’m aware financial situations are a big struggle at the moment, there is no pressure to.)
Provide support by these links:
Thank you for reading until the end; have an awesome week ahead. Please remember to hydrate and eat. 🫶🏽❤️‍🩹

The U.S. Secret Service has released a first-of-its-kind report that analyzes 173 mass attacks that took place in the country from 2016-2020.
It's the first time the agency has put together trends collected from five years of data; the report examines everything from when in the year the attacks took place, to behavioral changes exhibited in the attackers. The report, which comes from the agency's National Threat Assessment Center, looked at attacks that harmed at least three individuals, not including the attacker.
The report comes just days after two shootings in California in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay killed a total of 18 people. So far in 2023, there have been 39 mass shootings.
Lina Alathari, chief of the National Threat Assessment Center, said she hopes the research and guidance provided in the report can help prevent future mass attacks.
"We must do everything we can to prevent these, which is why we're putting out this research for you. There is no community that is immune from this," Alathari said.
TOP DATA POINTS FROM THE REPORT
• LOCATION: Most of the attacks took place in a variety of public and semi-public spaces across 37 states, and Washington, D.C. The most common locations for an attack were businesses, including restaurants and retail.
• TYPE OF WEAPON USED: 126 of the attacks, or 73%, involved the use of one or more firearms. In nearly 1/4 of the attacks involving firearms, at least one of the firearms was acquired illegally by the attacker.
• DEMOGRAPHICS OF ATTACKERS: 96% of the attackers in the study were male. The USSS says that this finding is consistent with previous analyses of mass attacks. 57% were white and 34% were Black.
• CRIMINAL HISTORY: 64% had a prior criminal history, not including minor traffic violations. 41% of the attackers were found to have a history of domestic violence, but only 16% if those individuals faced domestic violence charges.
• ONLINE PRESENCE: A majority of the attackers had a identified presence online, and nearly one-quarter were found to have conveyed "concerning communications" such as threats, and posts about suicidal ideations, previous mass shootings, violent content and hatred toward a specific ethnic group.
• STRESSORS: Nearly all the attackers experienced "at least one significant stressor" within five years of the attack, most of which were issues with family and romantic relationships. 20% of the attackers experienced some kind of childhood trauma, including physical or sexual abuse, entering foster care, living in a refugee camp, or the death of a parent, the report says.
• FINANCIAL AND HOUSING INSTABILITY: 72% of the attackers experienced a financial stressor some time before the attack, and over half experienced it within five years. The report describes some financial stressors as bankruptcy, eviction, foreclosure and loss of income. 39% of the attackers also experienced unstable housing within 20 years of their attack, including homelessness and impending evictions.
CONCERNING BEHAVIORS AND MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS AMONG THE ATTACKERS
The report says that of the 180 attackers examined in the report, 58% experienced mental health symptoms prior to or at the time of their attack, some of which included depression and suicidal thoughts, and psychotic symptoms such as paranoia and delusions.
The report makes it clear that mental health factors should not be considered causal explanations for why these attacks occurred.
"Mental illness is not a barometer for dangerousness and it is not a correlation for mass attacks. The vast majority of individuals with mental illnesses in this country will never be violent. In fact, often, they are the victims of violence," Alathari said.
The agency says violence like mass attacks are rarely spontaneous and almost always have some warning signs in the attacker. The report doesn't offer any kind of road map to prevent future mass attacks, but the agency recommends that "community systems" be set up to help identify and intervene when someone reports concerns about another person.
With the roll out of the USSS's report, they are also holding a virtual event, and Alathari said 21,000 people signed up to attend from all 50 states and 80 countries.
"Everyone has a role to play in prevention, it's [not] just one person's responsibility or one organization's responsibility. It is a community-wide, multi-disciplinary effort," Alathari said.

I got fired, so what about money?
240314 I got fired. Admittedly it was like, the Monday before last, but I still got fired. And I’m depressed for a variety of reasons including that I got fired. For once, though, I don’t think it’s directly related to writing. The problem with getting fired, especially since I was casual, is that I have no money (very little money). And I’ve got myself to thinking about my online presence and…

Did I Do That?
While living in Paradise Palms, we occasionally threw a party for the neighborhood. Nice neighborhood, Paradise Palms! This may not relate directly to writing, but it’s on my mind, and germane to anyone who uses the Internet for work. I refer to the case in which somebody unknown hijacks your account on social media for a joke, evil purposes, the heck of it, whatever. In my case I started…

Is this what having an existential crisis feels like?
Yesterday, I posted the following on a number of my social media sites:
Tumblr media
I decided to write a post here instead of tweeting/posting about this because (1) I don't have to worry about breaking up what I want to say into smaller tweets/posts and (2) I can then just post a single link to each of my social media sites rather than reproducing the thread on each site.
As I think about it, I'm starting to think it might be more accurate to say I'm having an existential crisis over my online presence, whether I even want to continue it, and what I want it to be like. After all, it's something that has been building over quite some time. In fact, it probably goes farther back than what I'm going to discuss today.
A lot of it started to really come to a head as Twitter (I will never call it "X" even if Evil Big Bird threatens to delete my account if I don't stop calling it "Twitter") really began circling the drain. People not only started making exit plans, but began to execute them. Many friends and acquaintances have announced that they either do not feel safe remaining there or cannot in good conscience support the site by their continued presence. I have not joined them, but I understand and respect the decision they made.
To me, the most frustrating part of this, however, is that everyone's exit plans are different. Some of the people I follow now hang out on Blue Sky. Some are on Threads. Some are on Instagram. Some made one Discord server or another their home. Some came here to Tumblr. There's no longer a single place I can go to keep in touch with all these wonderful people who mean something to my life. And while I've tried to keep a presence at many of these places, it's stretching me thin and I don't think it's a sustainable course of action for me in the long run. So while I'd never ask any of these people to stay in a place they find too toxic and harmful just for my convenience, I'm most sad that the death of Twitter is turning into a veritable "Tower of Babel" moment.
In the long run, I'm just going to have to choose which sites I feel I can and should focus on and accept the reality that I'm going to have to say goodbye to some people -- or at least not remain quite as close to them as I might have been at one point. And choosing who to say goodbye to by nature of where I limit my own presence too also weighs on me. These are choices I'm not going to enjoy.
Add to this the fact that I'm feeling a bit lost for a direction for my continued online presence. I'm not sure what I want to talk about anymore. There are a growing number of days I'm not sure I have anything to talk about, if I'm being honest.
I don't feel that I"m a hugely creative person most days. I have a few great ideas. I think those some of those ideas are pretty important. For example, I think that my past discussions about changing our understanding of what it means to call someone or something "sacred" was incredible. (Though I'm also finding it's far from original to me.) I'm glad I did a couple Twitter threads and (I think three) YouTube videos on the subject.
But the idea that calling someone or something sacred is to acknowledge that it has inherent value that cannot be given or taken away is not exactly a complicated topic. I'm not sure I can say much about the topic that I haven't already said. And I'm not the kind of person who can just keep repeating myself (and that's what it would feel to me like I was doing at this point). I'd start to feel silly and talking just for the sake of saying something.
The one site I seem to still be going pretty well on -- and it's a somewhat new one for me -- is Quora. I seem to be doing okay there because I can answer questions. I particularly like answering theological questions. Mainly because like in so many places, the theological questions largely seem to focus on Christian theology (and certain specific "brands" of Christianity at that). I like answering those questions in a way that bring my Norse polytheistic views to the table, reminding people that there are other ways to tackle the "big questions" that even challenge some of the assumptions of (most notably evangelical) Christianity.
I haven't found much interest in that level of discourse on the social media sites. It's also one of the reasons that I've been drifting away from the deconstruction communities I've been involved in the past year or so. They're still mainly focused on theology from a Christian standpoint. That's fair, since a lot of people in those communities are still Christian and trying to figure out how to rescue their faith from the toxic theology they were originally stewed in. And even those who have no interest in remaining Christian tend to be only interested in theology insofar as it relates to processing the harm they received from that toxic theology.
I've considered just focusing on Quora for this reason, though I'm not convinced that's the right answer. And even there, I start to wonder if I'm doing anything worthwhile.
So that's my possible existential crisis. Thanks for listening.

Creating Connections with Community Pages
Tumblr media
As brokers and agents, we are all tied to our communities and there are so many great ways to get involved too. Some of you reading this today volunteer at shelters, support boys-and-girls clubs, are part of a Rotary Group or community lodge, or maybe you care for aging pets or are a member of a local activity group. These are all great things you can do in person that build your presence within the community and expand your sphere of contacts – and help you feel good too! But how do you illustrate connections to your community to people outside of it, like to someone who is relocating from another part of your state?
One of the things that websites (and social media) do for us is expand our presence and message further than they could ever reach without them – and today I want to focus on how you can demonstrate community connections in a way that isn’t just about you, but that gives your website visitor something of value too.
The Evolution of the Community Page
Since my company has been building real estate websites for nearly two decades, I have seen a lot of changes. Back in the early aughts (2003/2004) a community page was, at its best, a brief gazetteer. A paragraph or two, half-a-dozen photos maybe. Ambitious agents would include some market stats, but there wasn’t any automation to keep them current, so they quickly became dated and for many agents it was just too much to maintain data like that.
As time went on, pages got more interesting. Companies like TrendGraphix would create tools to let agents add self-updating market charts to their websites. Social media like Instagram would emerge and give agents a way to stream current photos from their account. A website with an MLS connection could even show current local listings. It was better, but there was a lot of room for improvement.
Today, thanks to the work of IDX companies, huge data brokering services like Atom Data and Home Junction, local review sites like Yelp, Google Maps, Great Schools, artificial intelligence, and more, community pages are easier than ever to create, maintain, and can provide impressive value to website visitors.
Local Maps
This is crucial. Many people don’t have a great sense of where a place is, so whether you are detailing a county or a local neighborhood, include a map. I love interactive maps that let me zoom-in-and-out. Extra points if that map can show me where local schools, parks, and shopping areas are. This is extremely useful for buyers who want to know where they will be able to make a quick grocery stop, to identify the school their children may attend, determine commuting times and so much more. When we build websites, we always include these features!
Tumblr media
Market Information
No modern community page is complete without up-to-date market information. Buyers and sellers both appreciate this info. It helps you, the real estate agent, start the process of setting expectations even before you have met. It helps potential referring agents from out of the area identify potential neighborhoods (and you) as viable for their moving clients. Information about recent sales, average price, and home ownership rates are a great starting point. If you want to really provide something of value, offer the option of downloading a full market report. Our websites can generate these on demand, which is a great way to capture potential leads from your website, for a quick handout to mail, or to take to a listing presentation.
Tumblr media
Community Description
Of course, every community page should have a description. These days, a short one is just fine since we are going to include a lot more visual info, but if you are talking about a small community then a little more detail can go a long way too. If you use AI to generate your community description, don’t forget to fact check it! We like to include some statistics in our community descriptions, but you have to be careful that they don’t go stale. To keep ours fresh, we use the same data sources that automatically update our market information.
Tumblr media
Schools
For well over a decade, we have been able to include school information with websites and without undue effort. Great Schools has made this easy, whether you go-it-alone or have a professional build your website. It’s just as relevant as it has ever been and every great community page should have it.
Tumblr media
Demographics
Buyers want to know if a community is the right fit for them. Sellers are curious how their community has changed. For you, the agent, having a reliable source of demographics makes for endless, easy content for sharing online, and adds something to your website that most other agents just don’t have at all.
Tumblr media
Local Businesses
Beyond supporting local businesses, which can often use all the help they can get, showcasing local stores and services really integrates you into the community. Locals love seeing their favorite spots featured. Potential clients from further away can get a taste of what is available in your area and maybe even try something out on a visit. We connect our client’s real estate websites to Yelp’s services to showcase popular dining, bars and coffee shops, shopping centers, gyms and self-care, and pet care services.
Tumblr media
Other Details
Slideshows or connecting an Instagram stream of local photos have huge visual value. Including a connection to your MLS where visitors can browse inventory is a must – yes, it’s not what brought them to your website, but they will stay longer and search engines love it too. It’s also important to have lots of opportunities for people to connect with you. Season your community page with these opportunities so that as your visitors look around it is easy for them to reach you with a question. If you are blogging about your area, include a section on your community page of recent blog posts. I would put blogs towards the bottom to give visitors something easy to move on to after they have engaged with your community info.
Closing Thoughts
If you have been reading through this and thinking, "I have no idea how I would even start to add some of these ideas," then stop thinking and take action by giving us a call, emailing us at [email protected] or by visiting us online and scheduling a free consult. For examples of actual community pages, try here, here, or here. Your community pages are a powerful, critical part of connecting with new clients online and illustrating your local connections and knowledge.

Driving Business Growth and Enhancing Online Presence: The Indispensable Importance of a Website
In the digital age, businesses are constantly seeking avenues for growth and establishing a strong online presence. A website plays a pivotal role in achieving these objectives, offering a multitude of benefits for businesses. In this article, we will delve into why a website is crucial for business growth, how it enhances online visibility, credibility, and customer engagement, and the role it plays in data analytics, SEO, and digital marketing strategies.
Elevating Online Visibility and Reach:
A well-designed website acts as a digital storefront, empowering businesses to expand their online visibility and reach. By incorporating strategic SEO techniques and relevant keywords, businesses can improve their search engine rankings, enabling potential customers to discover them more easily. With a website, businesses can break geographical barriers and access a global audience, thus increasing brand exposure and driving business growth.
Establishing Credibility and Trust:
In the virtual landscape, credibility and trust are paramount to success. A professionally crafted website serves as a powerful tool to establish credibility and foster trust among customers. Through a well-structured website, businesses can showcase their expertise, achievements, testimonials, and contact information. This transparency and professionalism contribute to building a positive brand image, attracting customers, and instilling confidence in their minds.
Showcasing Products and Services Effectively:
A website acts as an immersive platform to showcase products and services, offering businesses an opportunity to captivate their audience. By integrating compelling visuals, detailed descriptions, and interactive features, businesses can engage visitors and entice them to explore further. Additionally, an e-commerce-enabled website enables seamless transactions, simplifying the buying process and driving sales growth.
Engaging Customers for Long-Term Success:
Engaging customers is essential for cultivating long-term relationships and sustaining business growth. A website facilitates effective customer engagement through features like contact forms, live chat support, and informative blog sections. These communication channels enable businesses to address customer queries, provide assistance, and gather valuable feedback. By actively engaging with customers, businesses can enhance customer satisfaction, loyalty, and ultimately, their bottom line.
Leveraging Data Analytics for Informed Decision-Making:
A website empowers businesses with invaluable data analytics capabilities, which play a vital role in shaping successful digital marketing strategies. Through website analytics tools, businesses can track metrics such as website traffic, conversion rates, and user demographics. This data-driven approach allows businesses to gain insights into customer behavior, identify trends, and make informed decisions to optimize marketing efforts, improve user experience, and drive business growth.
