Let's consider the sampling bias of a classic polling method: the telephone survey.
In many jurisdictions, robo-calling cell phone numbers is illegal, so right off the jump, our sample is limited to people with landlines.
Second, our survey's calling centre probably doesn't operate 24/7, and you can only answer a home landline when you're at home, so we're also selecting for people who tend to be at home during our calling centre's office hours.
Third, most people who have landlines probably also have answering services and caller ID, so we're additionally selecting for people who answer unknown numbers rather than letting them go to the machine.
Fourth, our recipient needs to be able to participate in the survey, so we're also selecting for people who speak the language(s) in which the survey is being administered.
Finally, after all this, most people will just hang up once they figure out they're being polled, so in sum, we're selecting for people who:
have landlines;
are usually at home during our calling centre's office hours;
customarily answer unknown numbers;
speak the language(s) in which the survey is administered; and
are actually interested in responding to surveys.
Any one of these factors is likely to introduce very serious bias into our results; all of them taken together are going to render our data practically meaningless for most purposes.
Now, understand that this still represents less selection bias than trying to do demographic surveys by reblogging Tumblr polls.

I'm not American, but grew up in a country that is REALLY used to centering American opinions. I'd love to see how many people here are actually American, and how many are just accepting of a lot of American content.
Boundaries are fake, so most places show up at least twice. Choose the grouping that you connect with more.

The AO3 Demographics Survey 2024 has arrived!
This project is an independent survey (not affiliated with AO3) which seeks to research the demographics and behaviours of AO3 users. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete, will be open until 1 February, and can be found at https://forms.gle/2kt5J17ipzcAbnFY9
We are hoping to survey as large a group of users as possible, so we really appreciate anyone who shares the survey, whether by reblogging this post or sharing posts on other social media.
If you have any questions for us, we have FAQs on Tumblr or on AO3 which will be updated as the project progresses. And of course, you can follow us on Tumblr or AO3 if you want to see the survey results!

Largest religious denomination in the USA by county
Btw this doesn’t show atheism/irreligion, so like in Los Angeles, 60-70% of religious people are Catholic, it’s not that 60-70% of Angelenos are Catholic, just the ones who profess a religion.

On the changing age demographics
Woke up in the wee hours this morning, turned on the radio, and listened to a discussion on the BBC about the aging population, and how there are not enough children being born in certain parts of the world to keep pace with old people dying, and "What to do? What to Do?!" to make having an raising children more appealing.
And there was much talk about giving families money for each child they have, and raising the retirement age, so we don't have to pay as much in Social Security programs, and easing work requirements for immigrants.
And I lay there thinking: this is one more argument for switching to a 4-hour workday, instead of 8-hours, so a two income family can split the time in taking care of the kids you're bringing into the world. The Japanese government has been trying to promote the idea of people having more children, but their culture is still heavily burdened with the work grind, and no one has the time or energy to raise more kids in a way that the kids deserve.
And also an argument for 15-minute and walkable cities, so the kids can get around town and play with their friends, without relying on their parents to drive them everywhere.
It's not about creating "incentives" for adults to "produce" more children. It's about creating world where children can live joyfully.

I love it when folks do those age bracket polls, then look at the results like "ooh, a third of this site's population is over thirty, Tumblr is full of old people" like, bro, half the world's population is over thirty – and the half that's under thirty includes huge numbers of people who can't use Tumblr on account of being too young to read. The fact that only a third of Tumblr's present users are over thirty means the site's population is still skewing exceptionally young.

We know tumblr is dominated by the anglosphere, but how is it distributed between its core countries?
"The five core countries of the Anglosphere are usually taken to be Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries enjoy close cultural and diplomatic links with one another and are aligned under military and security programmes." (Wikipedia)

@rfswitchart , what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may G-d have mercy on your soul.

Close to 99 per cent of Palestinians are Muslims, with Christians making up less than 1 per cent of the population (PCBS, 2017) with small numbers of members of other communities including around 400 Samaritans resident in the West Bank.

So, I’m kinda curious about something y’all. There is so much media about being misfits and outcasts and weird kids and the whole idea of that is that supposedly most people ‘fit’ and these few don’t, but if the theme is that popular it makes me wonder how many people actually feel that way
And yes, I know the data’s gonna be pretty severely skewed on a place like tumblr populated mainly by freaks (affectionate), but I am very curious to see if anyone at all goes for option number two.
Reblog for larger sample size to see if we can catch any stray normies that have wandered into freak territory.
