The AO3 Demographics Survey 2024 has arrived!
This project is an independent survey (not affiliated with AO3) which seeks to research the demographics and behaviours of AO3 users. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete, will be open until 1 February, and can be found at https://forms.gle/2kt5J17ipzcAbnFY9
We are hoping to survey as large a group of users as possible, so we really appreciate anyone who shares the survey, whether by reblogging this post or sharing posts on other social media.
If you have any questions for us, we have FAQs on Tumblr or on AO3 which will be updated as the project progresses. And of course, you can follow us on Tumblr or AO3 if you want to see the survey results!

3zun data analysis
I was wondering how much the different 2-out-of-3zun ship fics were actually focused specifically on them, rather than having them feature as side pairings, so I did a little mini-experiment. Beginning by searching for otp:true in each tag
(This doesn't give you the real number of fics were the pairing is the main focus, for the record. The other tagged ships might've been a side pairing, and the one we're filtering for the main one, and otp:true also filters out platonic relationships. So, for example, a nielan fic that has the nie brothers tagged as a platonic bond will also be filtered out. But since it does that for all ships you can still get a good idea how likely each one of them is to be the center in their fics)
My hypothesis was that Nielan would be the least likely, as they're frequently tagged as a side pairing in wangxian focused fics, with xiyao and nieyao having comparable results.
Nielan, as I type this, have 2154 works, of which only 627 have only nielan tagged. That is 29% of all nielan fics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is xiyao, who have 4534 works, of which 2195 only have xiyao tagged, a significanly higher 48%
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly nieyao, who have the least works in total with 1749, but have 683 works only tagged nieyao, more than nielan despite having less fics overall. Ending up at 39% of all nieyao fics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I was right about nielan being lower, but turned out to be wrong in my hypothesis that nieyao and xiyao would end up with comparable results!
One possible factor is that nieyao, being a smaller ship, is more affected by those big collection-type fics that have a dozen pairings tagged for every chapter, as well as 3zun fics that have the individual pairings tagged. (Which we'll get to later!!)
Also, Huaisang - typical of him - butts into nieyao more. 5% of nieyao fics have the Nie brothers tagged platonically, and almost exactly the same number are tagged sangyao. Compare that to lan xichen's much more reserved little brother who really doesn't want to be a part of this, as only 3% of xiyao fics are tagged with the twin jades, and zhanyao... isn't much of a thing.
I'd anticipated both of these, but I'd also expected that xiyao, being a bigger ship, would be a less controversial background pairing for wangxian, who - let's be real - are the main players within the mdzs fic space so they massively impact the numbers. I know xiyao are certainly not without controversy (god no) and the go-to side pairings are xicheng and xuanli instead but like... compared to nieyao, surely they're the normie pick? And, well, 25% of xiyao fics are tagged wangxian compared to only 20% of nieyao fics so that is somewhat true, but not as much as I'd thought. (For comparison, 43% of nielan fics are tagged wangxian)
Now let's look at 3zun overall. Of the 1127 3zun fics, 277 are exclusively tagged 3zun. That's only 25%
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that doesn't feel right. After all, a lot of 3zun fics also tag the individual pairings. And excluding them like we did with the 2-out-of-3zun ships feels wrong. You'd categorize a fic tagged with both nieyao and 3zun as a 3zun fic, wouldn't you?
So I manually excluded each non 2-out-of-3zun pair. This took a bit, but you end up with 538 3zun fics which are either not tagged with any side pairing, or only tagged with a ship already contained in 3zun. That is 48% of all 3zun fics, similar to xiyao.
Tumblr media
So there you have it! Xiyao is the most independent of the subfandoms, having almost half of its works centered solely around xiyao (and even more primarily focused on xiyao. As I said, otp:true also filters out works that still focus on xiyao but have other background relationships) with the overall 3zun fandom having a similar focus, followed by nieyao, and then nielan.
edit: this has a part 2 now

Graph showing Russian-language fanworks posted per month on the AO3, as a percentage of all fanworks posted that month. I collected data from AO3′s works search, while logged in, on April 21, 2023.
I believe the spike in December 2022 was caused by the passage of a Russian law expanding the prohibition on sharing positive information or publishing media about LGBT people from just children to everyone.

Hey, would any Argenti havers be willing to help me out? I'm trying to make a complete list of every character's score on the Rating Pistol, so we can bang our heads against the wall about it with more data, and he's the only one I can't verify myself or find a source for. If someone could get me the number it would be super awesome.

DNI statistics so far!!!
I’m selecting 100 blogs from each tag (80 from the recent posts, 20 from the top posts) and that’s what these statistics are based on: again, it’s not the most effective data pool but I’m just fiddling around!
Orange Pie Chart= % of blogs with a DNI in their bio/pinned/carrd, Green Pie Chart = % of blogs without a DNI listed
A few comments:
I’m super excited to see which tags are more likely to have more DNIs! The difference between the agere stats and most fandom stats are frankly staggering, and I’m interested in if there are any fandoms or other tumblr communities that rely more heavily on DNIs (I suspect the selfship tag will also be up there, but what else?)
I separated DDLG and ‘CGL/ageplay variants’ as different categories when ranking them because I thought it was funny how many DNIs didn’t include other gender dynamics when it comes to kink.
Send me more tumblr tags that you think would be interesting for sorting through DNIs!! I’m definitely interested in doing more of these.
Some honorable mentions for interesting DNI qualifiers below the ‘read more’ as a little bonus :P
Meaningless Insult Count:  -1x ‘jerkwads’  -1x’creeps’ -1x’discriminatory shitheads’  -1x’gross people’
Total “”standard/basic DNI”” Count: 6
Dishonored Fandoms Count:  -DSMP Fans (7) -Harry Potter (4) -Cronus Ampora Apologists (1)  -Darklina Shippers (1)  -Billy Hargrove Supporters (1)  -Billy Hargrove Antis (1)  -Vivziepop Supporter (1)  -Attack on Titan (1)  -South Park (1)
Made Me Laugh:  -’no immoral blog content’  -’no one under 13 or over 19′  -’stalkers DNI’  -’no atheists’
Had to Google:  -Hybristophiles (people attracted to criminals??)  -xenicphobia (another word for anti-xenogender)  -TCC (true crime community)  -Queermisic (a ‘more inclusive’ alternative to ‘homophobia’??)
Still A Mystery To Me:  -”angels without red halos DNI” (is this a random religious reference for the Aesthetic?? Is it a reference to wanting TERFs to follow because of the web extension that surrounds radfems’ blogs in red? Who knows!! )

comparing the ao3 categories across star treks
After seeing @caladeniablue's excellent graphs of how Trek fandoms are changing over time, I was curious about the categories fics are posted in (f/f, f/m, gen, m/m, multi and other). I also wanted to see if the legacy fandoms were changing over time (comparing all time works and works posted in 2022.).
f/f - blue, f/m - red, gen - yellow, m/m - green, multi - orange, other - teal.
I excluded crossovers, but didn't go through and make sure to just use work that were labeled with only one fandom so there is some crossover that way.
Legacy Treks - (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and AOS - movies) are in this post.
New Treks will be another post (link to be added as I finished).

Year End Stats
Kinda.
So, I'm a brat and want to know when notifs go out, so I'm subscribed to myself. Since Ao3's stats are... uh, not great for the yearly breakdown they supposedly have (if you post a longfic across multiple years, the stats are counted in full for both years), so I can't see how many words I wrote easily...
But I could go back through all my notification emails, add up all the words, and find out 1) how many words I posted* for each account in 2023 and 2) how many times I posted. AngelSelene_Archived is not counted in this.
Uh, disclaimer: it's a lot. Also it's "how many words I posted" and not "how many I wrote" both because I had 3 longfics I posted this year that I have had written in significant part before this year (Surviving the Fire, Wildness in His Bones, and Brutally combined had well over 100k pre-written before I started posting). Anyway, that means it's not a true "how much did I write in 2023" but it's... uh, still impressive.
Stats beneath the cut:
Tumblr media
So... GEO readers feasted this year (not a surprise since I finished Iron and Ichor). I may not have done Nano this year--my dayjob is retail adjacent, so November's always an iffy proposition anyway--but I did have 7 (SEVEN) months where I posted over 50k, and an eighth (Feb) where I just missed it.
Dramatic drop-off in Nov-Dec, which... look, IRL was not kind from Halloween on this year. Probably 20k of what was posted in those two months were pre-written.
What was the total word count? 611,305 words posted in 2023. AngelSelene got 208k, while GEO got a whopping 403k.
So... that's a lot.
And because that's a lot, I got curious about how often I posted.
Uh, spoiler alert: it's also a lot.
Tumblr media
In case anyone's curious, final tallies were 73 times for AS, and 118 times for GEO, for a grand total of 191 times.
Guys, statistically speaking, I posted every other day last year between the two accounts. I had no idea I had posted that much. I also have no idea why so many of my wonderful readers don't unsubscribe when they realize how much I post. 😂
The actual numbers if anyone's curious:
Tumblr media
I do not expect this year to be this nuts (not the least of which because I don't have over 100k of longfic drafts), but I'm def still recovering from the insanity of the end of the year, and it is absolutely impacting my desire to write.
To those who signed up to go through this insanity with me--thank you. Truly. 💛💛💛💛

It's a little crazy to watch the dungeon meshi fandom explode. As I say this, at the start of april 2024, there are 694 dungeon meshi fics on ao3 which looks like a modest number especially if you consider that the earliest fic in the tag is from 2017. But that's not taking into account that 544 of those 694 were posted 2024 and a whopping 299 were in march 2024 alone. And considering that the average lifetime of a fic from initial idea to writing and editing to publication is months we are actually at a very early point on the exponential curve, the real explosion is yet to come.
To illustrate my point, if you look a little more closely at the fics you'll realize the vast majority of them are oneshots, not multichaptered fics. Like. Much more compared to more established fandoms.
(If you want hard numbers for proof: the number of fics updated, not posted, in march 2024 was 326. That means that of all the fics updated in march ONLY 27 were fics posted earlier than march. And of the 299 posted, only 64 weren't oneshots. For all fics updated in march 72.1% were oneshots, 27.9% not. Compare that to a randomly chosen other fandom I'm in, Deltarune, where only 35.5% of the fics updated in march 2024 were oneshots, and 64.5% were not. The difference is staggering dunmeshi literally has twice as many oneshots comparetively)
And that's because oneshots are quicker to write, while a multichaptered fic takes much more planning. The longest fic in the dunmeshi fandom tag is currently only 67K words which is impressive but nothing compared to the behemoths you usually see occupying that spot. All those longfics? Those are still coming.

A deep dive into AO3′s Bertolt Hoover shipping tags
I got bored and I like making lists and excel sheets, so I went ahead and mined all the data from the various Bertholdt relationships that exist on AO3. The resulting statistics and graphs are quite interesting, so I want to share them!
To start, I went to AO3′s tag search page, searched for every ship that contains Bertholdt OR Bertolt, picked the Relationship category, selected Canon and Non-Canon, and sorted by chronological ascending so that they would show up in the order in which they were created.
Then, I went ahead and collected the following data:
The canonical ship name
Characters involved
Type (romantic or platonic)
Genders involved
Number of characters in the ship
Number of fics in the tag
The order in which they were created
A link to the works and tag page
The number of G, T, M, E, and Not Rated fics
In doing so, I ignored synonym ships. Half of all of Bertholdt’s current 525 ship tags are variations on Reiner/Bertholdt. I’ve only catalogued the canon tag, or if that was missing, the most canon spelling.
Then, I went ahead and created some tables to count totals and other numbers that seemed interesting.
Important to note is that the total number of fics isn’t an accurate sum of total fics that are on the archive. For example, if a single fic is tagged with both “Armin Arlert/Bertolt Hoover” and “Armin Arlert & Bertolt Hoover”, then this fic will represent itself twice in the data. The numbers are more to be taken as relative: how many fics contain this ship tag and how does that compare to other ships?
I went with ships because these are the easiest way to ensure that the fic is at least a little bit about Bertholdt. Most fics that tag him have him in the background or he doesn’t even show up in them. When at least one relationship with him is tagged, the odds that he’s relevant in the fic increase by a lot. The number of fics that have him as a main character but that don’t tag him in any relationships is rather insignificant, so this is the best way to go through Bertholdt fics and collect some data.
You can find the full sheet here. Data was captured on the 8th of January 2023. The newest ship tag at the time was Bertolt Hoover/Onyankopon and I will likely not update these stats since it’s quite a bit of work. Unless some really bad life decisions lead me to still be in this fandom in five years and data has shifted enough to see an evolution.
Find the full sheet with data here.
Let’s go through the data!
Number of fics
When sorted by size, these are the ships with the most fics:
Reiner Braun/Bertolt Hoover (2666)
Bertolt Hoover/Annie Leonhart (465)
Bertolt Hoover/You (310)
Reiner Braun & Bertolt Hoover (300)
Reiner Braun & Bertolt Hoover & Annie Leonhart (275)
Reiner Braun/Bertolt Hoover/Annie Leonhart (125)
Armin Arlert/Bertolt Hoover (75)
Bertolt Hoover & Annie Leonhart (63)
Bertolt Hoover/Eren Yeager (61)
Bertolt Hoover/Original Character(s) (59)
Bertolt Hoover/Jean Kirstein (58)
Marco Bott/Bertolt Hoover (55)
Bertolt Hoover & Reader (40)
Armin Arlert & Bertolt Hoover (32)
Sasha Blouse/Bertolt Hoover (30)
Reiner Braun & Pieck Finger & Marcel Galliard & Porco Galliard & Bertolt Hoover & Annie Leonhart (29)
Reiner Braun/Bertolt Hoover/Reader (25)
Mikasa Ackerman/Bertolt Hoover (23)
Porco Galliard/Bertolt Hoover (23)
Bertolt Hoover/Ymir (20)
Not unexpected that RBA ships and reader ships are at the top, considering the former has always been popular and the latter is a large trend at the moment.
I was surprised that Bertholdt/Armin is the largest rarepair considering that when I first got into this ship in September of 2020, there were about 20 fics in this tag and over half of them were either crack, didn’t contain them, or had them as background characters. It’s nice to see it boom!
Ships with Eren, Jean, and Marco are one of the first Bertholdt ship tags to be created on AO3. They used to be popular in the early days but are quieter in recent years due to a shift in character spotlight.
Characters
Ships
The following graph shows how many Bertholdt ships each character is a part of.
Tumblr media
Reiner, Annie, Marco, Jean, Eren, Marcel, Armin, and Reader take up the top spots for characters who appear in the most ships.
Fics ‎
When you bring in how many fics are tagged with a ship containing each character, the view becomes quite skewed.
Tumblr media
Because of the sheer number of Reiner/Bertholdt fics, Reiner racks in 3530 fics, representing 65,8% of all Bertholdt fics. Annie comes in second at 996 fics or 18,4% and Reader is third with 310 or 5,7% of fics.
To give a more representative overview of the other ships, Reiner, Annie, and Reader’s data were removed from this graph.
Tumblr media
Armin (122 fics), Jean (115 fics), Marco (106), and Eren (100) are notably higher than the rest.
In the second grouped tier, we have Porco (63), OC (58), Marcel (54), Sasha (48), Pieck (41), Ymir (41), and Mikasa (27).
In the third, we have Erwin (17), Connie (14), Historia (10), Levi (7), Gabi (5), Colt (4), Hange (4), Zeke (3), The Colossal Titan (2), and Mina (2).
Romantic vs Platonic
Tumblr media
The table shows some interesting data. Let’s look at that as graphs.
Tumblr media
An interesting number when it comes down to ships: 41,6% of all ships on AO3 are platonic ships (&) and 58,4% are romantic (/). However, this also shows that the number of ships can deviate wildly from the number of fics:
Tumblr media
If you look at the bulk of fics that are associated with a romantic Bertholdt ship, suddenly that number becomes 16,7% platonic vs 83,3% romantic.
Fic Rating
A fic can only have one rating. There are five ratings available:
G, or General Audiences, for fics that can be read by anyone
T, or Teens and Up, for fics that contain slightly more mature themes
M, or Mature, for fics that contain mature themes or mild sexual content
E, or Explicit, for fics that contain explicit sexual content, violence, or gore
Not Rated, for when the author doesn’t think the fic fits neatly within one category and they leave it open
For every ship, I went ahead and counted how many fics there are in each category. Check out the full sheet for every ship’s percentages.
First off, the number of ships that have at least one fic per rating. For example, G’s 50 means that 50 different ships have at least one fic that is rated G.
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, E is the most represented rating among the differing ships, followed by T, then M, G, and Not Rated. But the statistics are generally well-balanced.
Second: the number of fics that are tagged with each rating.
Tumblr media
In terms of fic representation:
T > M > E > G > Not Rated
Note that just because a fic is rated E, that doesn’t mean that the content of that warning applies to the Bertholdt ship, for example when they’re tagged as a side ship in another character’s ship.
Number of partners
General
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most ships (41,6%) consist of Bertholdt and one other person. 30,4% has two other people, 13,6% has three other people, 4% four, 2,4% six, and 8% can’t be counted because the character can be plural, for example Original Character(s).
Tumblr media
Despite the decent number of 3+ partner ships, an overwhelming majority of fics is about mono ships, namely 86,7%. 9,3% is three partners, 0,9% four, 0,1% five, 0,6% six, and 2,5% can’t be counted.
Romantic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at solely romantic ships, there is a notable increase in 3 partner ships.
Tumblr media
Percentage-wise, the number of fics for mono ships is even higher than in the global numbers. Mono ships represent 92% of all romantic Bertholdt fics. Three partner fics are 4,7%, four are 0,6%, five and six are both 0,02%, and 2,6% can’t be classified.
Platonic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a notably small amount of 3+ platonic ships compared to the others.
Tumblr media
However, the number of fics that contain a friendship between three characters is higher. Two platonic partners accounts for 60,5% of all platonic fics, three for 32%, four for 2,1%, five for 0,3%, six for 3,3%, and others for 0,4%. The uptick in six characters is probably due to the number of RBAMPP fics.
Ship composition
Romantic
Tumblr media
M/M, M/M/M, M/F, and M/M/F have the largest amount of ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are more M/M romantic ships than there are M/F ones. Notable is how the number of M/M ‎fics is about 5x higher than the number of M/F fics. Only one M/X ship and two fics exist.

When it comes to ships with a total of three partners, a funny pattern emerges. While M/M/F only have about the third of the amount of ships that M/M/M has, it has almost 3x the amount of fics because of M/M/M. M/F/F has only one fic, which goes to his ship with Ymir and Historia.

Looking at 4+ partners, there aren’t many ships. Still, despite being represented by only two ships, M/M/M/M sticks out above the rest, which is due to RBJM being paired pretty often.
Platonic
Tumblr media
2M, MF, 3M, and 2MF are the largest platonic ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gap between MM and MF ships is smaller for platonic ships than for romantic ones. Still, M&M dominates in terms of fics, with almost 4x the amount of fics compared to M&F.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3+ platonic partner ships show a large skew due to RBA ships as well: 278 fics are M&M&F and the next highest number is M&M&M&M&F&F, mostly inhabited by respectively RBA and RBAMPP. That’s almost 10x as many fics as the next item! Hence why it’s been removed from the graph.
Notable is that there is no RBAMPPZ relationship yet.
I kinda of lost the plot at this point and have run out of information to showcase
If there’s anything else you’d like me to make a graph out of, I’d love to do so. I can pretty much compare every data point against every other data point.
(Go and populate the smaller ship tags!)

AO3 tags that are most correlated to specific Ace Attorney Characters
Found after analyzing every AA fic on AO3 as of July 29, 2022. Methodology and dataset link below!
These are calculated by finding what percent of all fics are tagged with each character, and what percent are tagged with each tag (for any tag with 50 or more fics), and then combining those percentages to make a table of predictions.
For example, out of the 21,931 Ace Attorney fics, 0.5% are tagged with "Families of Choice" (~130 fics) and 11% are tagged with "Athena Cykes". So we'd expect there to be (21,931)(0.005)(0.11) = 12 fics tagged with both "Athena" and "Families of Choice". But in real life there are 34 of those fics-- that's 183% higher than the estimate! Which means those two tags are correlated, AKA the two things tend to happen together.
Full dataset is here for anyone who'd like to mess with it!
