Hotel Transylvania: Transformania
“Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” is quite genuinely a nothing film.
Count Dracula is finally ready to pass down the hotel to Mavis so that he can retire and be with Ericka. He starts to panic when he realizes how much the hotel will change under Johnny’s supervision, so he lies and tells him that Monster Real Estate Law won’t let Johnny legally own the hotel. Johnny talks with Abraham Van Helsing and learns that Van Helsing has a Monster Transformation Ray. Johnny uses it to turn into a monster. Dracula finds out and tries to change Johnny back, but ends up turning himself human. The whole situation ends with the Monster Transformation Ray being broken. Now, Johnny and Dracula must go out and find a new crystal to power the ray. The problem is, Johnny’s slowly turning into a mindless monster.
I thought the other “Hotel Transylvania” movies didn’t have much plot. “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” is devoid of any plot. The movie focuses on Johnny and Dracula’s quest to find a new crystal and that’s about it. There’s barely a B-plot in this movie because Mavis and the rest of the hotel members find Dracula to help him very easily. It made me wonder why the journey was so treacherous for Johnny and Dracula in the first place. I think the whole conception of this movie was based on the idea of having monsters be transformed into humans and vice versa. Any other ideas were secondary to the movie. The worst part about that is that the movie doesn’t even utilize this concept to its fullest potential. Just the older patrons of the hotel get turned into humans. Only one human gets turned into a monster and that’s Johnny. If the whole novelty of watching this movie was to see what the monsters would look like as humans, then show more of that. I would’ve loved to see everyone in the hotel be turned into humans. That way, the ‘Hotel’ part of the name “Hotel Transylvania” would be more justified. Look, I think it’s a fun idea to play around with, but I actually think this gimmick is counterproductive to the themes at work in the previous movies. The other movies were about how monsters and humans aren’t different at all and there’s no reason to hate one another. This concept of transformation just highlights the difference between monsters and humans while also having the central conflict be Dracula’s inability to practice what he preaches. It makes the other films pointless and makes this film feel regressive. Adam Sandler isn’t back for this movie and I never thought I’d want him back. He’s become the voice of Dracula in this franchise and he didn’t return for this film. The person voicing Dracula in this movie sounds like he’s doing a really bad impersonation of the movie character. It just feels off and it made this movie feel disconnected from the others. The directors are also different, but they did a pretty good job at emulating the Genndy Tartakovsky style. This was supposed to be released theatrically, but I’m glad it was released for streaming instead. I can’t imagine how mad people would’ve been to have paid full price for this shell of a film.

Some interview highlights about DC Super Hero Girls From CBR:
Can you describe the feel of this show?
Faust: It’s pretty much a complete reboot. We really started from the ground up — just kind of wanted to refresh the whole brand. We’re still bringing over the idea of superheroes, the themes of being a superhero, the themes of being a teenager, the idea of the female empowerment and positive stuff for girls. That’s all being carried over. But the storylines are different, [and] the characterizations are different. We have Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl and Bumblebee, but [with] very different personalities from the original web series.
Jenn Kluska: What Lauren always kept on saying is this a show about balancing your teen life and your super life. And that’s really a mirror for when you’re coming of age as a young girl. When you hit that age where you don’t know quite who you’re going to be yet, you’re still almost deciding, in a way. Often you’re different around one group — say, your parents, your teachers — than you are with your friends.
What Lauren really wants to communicate is that when you’re with your friends, that’s almost like that’s your true self. So, bring back the idea of superpowers. It’s really fun because secret identities are fun. You have to keep them secret, and it creates an extra level of suspense and drama. But also, it’s a really nice metaphor for deciding and figuring out who it is you want to be. Everything in the show we’re trying to do goes back to these big thematic choices and decisions about what it is to be a girl at this age.
You have this plethora of characters you can choose from. Do you start with the story first and then insert the characters, or do you start with the characters?
Lauren Faust: We start with the characters first. We have our heroes and their powers and stuff, but we also have their personalities, their problems. Each character in the first season is going to be presented with a problem: something that they want. And over the course of the series, their want is going to turn into something they discovered that they needed instead. We’re taking their personalities and their wants and trying to find the conflict based on who they are.
We have an episode where we paired Supergirl vs. Catwoman, not because their powers work so great together, but because their personalities conflicted with each other so well. That made a better episode for us. Catwoman can’t fight Supergirl, obviously. But, when you put the two of them together, you get a brains vs. brawn sort of story. Even though Supergirl could pummel Catwoman, what happens when Catwoman is too smart for Supergirl to catch?
Going off of that question, there are six villains that are kind of the counterpoints to the DC Super Hero Girls. Who makes up that roster?
Kluska: The villains are basically led by Catwoman. She’s the brains behind the situation. She won’t sully herself with actual physical fighting but she’s got these other girls to do it for her. We’ve got Giganta—she’s the muscle. Livewire, she’s the gossip; she’s the YouTuber. She’s spiky, she’s hard, so she’s the electric villain. Thematically, it works. We also have Poison Ivy. She’s the waif, the recluse. As a teen, we always say that she’s kind of like The-Breakfast-Club-Ally-Sheedy hair-in-the face, possibly-talking-to-a-potted-plant, sort of character.
We also have Star Sapphire. She’s our Green Lantern villain. Her backstory is that she was the girlfriend of Hal Jordan, so we’re playing her basically as the crazy ex-girlfriend. She’s super fun. All of her powers are pretty much built around love and loving, but she will kill you with it. Finally, we have Harley Quinn who is just the maniac. She’s completely unpredictable. You never quite know what she’s going to do, and she’s definitely the wild card literally and figuratively…
We really tried hard to find the best balance that would let us tell the most interesting stories because a lot of story and comedy comes from conflict. You want to put these personalities together and these powers together in a way that’s going to create the most interesting themes and the most fun visuals. You want to have a fight that based on character and emotion… but also you just want to see a cool fight. So, you want to put these powers together in a way that’s visually awesome as well.
