ON THE WAY UP IN '89 -- THE ULTIMATE ANTI-STAR DOING ROCK STAR THINGS.

OVERVIEW: "The shot was taken during Nirvana’s first European tour, a tumultuous time for the band before they blew up, with Kurt even having his passport stolen, as well as trying to jump from a speaker tower at one point. When opening for TAD and MUDHONEY at the Astoria Theatre on November 27, 1989, the music press in London were bewildered, calling them “Sub-Pop’s answer to THE BEATLES," foreshadowing their ultimate success.

I think it’s kind of a cool shot given not only is this "pre rock star Kurt," but also for the fact a copy of BLACK FLAG’s "The First Four Years" lies behind him, as well as the legendary Earache Records "Grind Crusher" compilation, which largely put grindcore on the map. Eagle eyed viewers will also notice a copy of BAD BRAINS’ "Quickness" LP as well.

Most of you probably rolled your eyes seeing this post thinking “yet another post about how Kurt Cobain liked hardcore," and yes, you wouldn’t be wrong, I’m sick of hearing about it too as if it validates hardcore’s place in music history any more because of one guy. Nonetheless, it doesn’t hinder how important this band and Sub-Pop were in putting alternative, and largely punk on the map and rehashing it for a different audience.

In 1983 prior to the label, Bruce Pavitt hosted a radio show called Subterranean Pop after his zine on the University of Washington radio station, KCMU (now KEXP). He also DJed at two local clubs, The Vogue and the all-ages venue, The Metropolis. He was possibly the only DJ in the country spinning a set of RUN DMC, MINOR THREAT, and THE SMITHS. Also Kurt put down the "Tales of Terror" LP and SACCHARINE TRUST when no one knew what or how great that shit is; it goes without saying he was a real head."

“[W]hen a 250-page history of Seattle’s rock heyday … only includes a page and a half on the women of the era — calling it ‘The Female Presence’ — something feels … wrong,” wrote Laura Dannen in a preview of the play for Seattle Met magazine. “Like a female guitarist was some kind of elusive Bengal tiger, caught only briefly on tape.” These Streets explored the experiences of women in grunge in the late ’80s and early ’90s, drawing on interviews with more than 40 women in the scene. 

The uneven treatment of women in the scene was even more pronounced if you were a woman of color making music. Tina Bell, a Black woman, formed Seattle band Bam Bam with her husband, guitarist Tommy Martin, in 1983; she was the frontwoman and principal songwriter. Bam Bam would perform with The Melvins, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, and were named KCMU/KEXP’s “Best NW Band.” Its 1984 EP Villains (Also Wear White) preceded Green River’s album Come on Down, often regarded as the first grunge album. Yet, while Bell is often referred to as the “Godmother of Grunge,” she’s also left out of most histories of the scene.

Grunge benefitted from its connection to riot grrrrl because it made the male-dominated scene seem more feminist, more progressive, and less sexist than it was. When women took Sharpies to their skin, the media dismissed them; when Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder did it, it somehow became cool and subversive. During a performance of the band’s song “Porch” on their 1992 MTV Unplugged show, Vedder wrote “PRO-CHOICE!!!” on his arm with a black marker; later that year, he appeared on Saturday Night Live wearing a T-shirt with a wire hanger and a pro-choice slogan on it. He also penned a 1992 op-ed on abortion for Spin. The mainstream media could handle politics in its music — as long as it was men doing the talking.

Whereas riot grrrl’s anger had scared journalists, resulting in misrepresentation and mockery, Vedder was allowed to be angry. “All the Rage,” read the cover of Time’s 1993 issue about how this new breed of angry male rockers was expressing the “passions and fears of a generation.” Both Vedder and Kurt Cobain declined to be interviewed for the story, but Vedder ended up on the cover anyway. This trend continued through the ’90s: men being lauded for their anger while women like Alanis Morissette were policed for it, accused of manufacturing outrage as a marketing strategy. Female musicians like Morissette had to be just angry enough to sell records, but not angry enough to risk offending anyone.

Kenya Makes a Splash with its Inaugural Marine Corps

  The first-ever Kenyan Marine Commando Unit (KMCU) have made history by successfully completing their basic training, marked by a passing-out parade at Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa. The KMCU will be an elite fighting force with the ability to conduct specialised amphibious operations to weaken and disrupt threats to Kenya, and take the fight to Al-Shabaab by land and by sea.

Photo by British High Commision Kenya.   Ten British Marines from 40 Commando Royal Marines trained the KMCU over twelve weeks as part of a training programme including physical fitness and amphibious assaults. Potential recruits were selected from the Kenyan Military to undertake rigorous training programme. The UK-funded obstacle course that was constructed at Mtongwe Naval Base is a near identical replica of the course used at the Royal Marine Commando training base in Lympstone, UK.

The Future

This first cohort of Marines have kick-started a self-sustaining training cycle, whereby the Kenyan Navy will eventually be able to train their own Marine Commandos. This joint endeavour to create the Marine Commando Unit is an example of the UK and Kenya’s enduring commitment to building a strong, capable and adaptable Kenyan Military that is already an anchor of regional stability and security. The UK-Kenya Strategic Partnership, is an ambitious five-year agreement delivering mutual benefits for the UK and Kenya, and keeping our people safe; it is underpinned by the Defence Cooperation Agreement that provides the framework for this training programme. The US Military are also an integral part of the creation of the KCMU by ensuring this specialist and formidable force are equipped to the highest standard.

7.      Float your boat – literally!

Seattle has the largest waterbody house; basically, the highest houseboat population in the city. You will find some amazing bridges, and what’s more interesting is that some of them are floating bridges. One of the world’s longest floating bridges is known as the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge. The second longest bridge is known as the Lacey V. Murray Memorial Bridge. And the world’s first floating bridge is the Mercer Island Floating Bridge.

Just what is a floating bridge all about? Well, these are bridges that use floats or shallow-draft boats to ensure supporting the continuous travel of pedestrians and vehicles. There’s a limit to how much these boats can carry due to the limit in buoyancy. That said, compared to other traditionally constructed bridges with cement, steel and brick, floating bridges prove more economical for shorter distances and lighter travel.

8.      Highest number of glassblowing studios

Seattle offers you the Pacific Northwest, known as the Glassblowing Capital of the United States. Dale Chihuly is the popular glassblowing artist in Seattle, among the hundreds known. 9.      More cats and dogs than children in Seattle
