Out this week: Strikers: A Graphic Novel (Graphic Universe, $18.99): Kiel Phegley, one of my former colleagues from Comic Book Resources, makes his graphic novel writing debut this week with artist Jacques Khouri. Together they tell the story about two hockey-playing friends on a roster of rejects in Flint, Michigan.

I wanted to asked something for some time (the main problem that I forgot).
Where you or any of the team involded in the Sonic movie prequel comic? Or did someone else make it?
Yeah, the IDW team did the art for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Pre-Quill-- I drew the Tails and Knuckles stories. Tracy and Adam Bryce Thomas did the others. The script was handled by Kiel Phegley, who did the movie novelizations and other recent Sonic chapter books.
No references for the character designs were provided by Paramount so I was guessing based on leaked art from the happy meals and on-set photos of plastic heads on sticks. In hindsight, I should have just asked Tyson for help.

The Pre-quill
Tumblr media
I'd put off reading Sonic 2: The Official Movie Pre-quill because I didn't want the comic to color my expectations for the movie, but I finally got around to reading it! Here's a post about it
Overall, I thought it was Pretty Good. For me, personally, it was mostly just fun to see the movie cast in comic form. Adam, Tracy, and Evan all did great on the art, but I don't think that should be news to anyone at this point. They did have to draw humans for a Sonic comic for the first time in ages, though. Kind of surreal having a new Sonic comic with multiple pages in a row of just humans. It's been so long...
Aside from that, it was also fun to see fanservicey glimpses of Paramount Sonic's universe in Tails and Knuckles' stories. This comic obviously doesn't necessarily reflect what we'll see in the live action stuff, it's just a tie-in, but it's fun to imagine that this version of the Milky Way is just full of Cool Sonic Shit all over the place, and these alien furries are seemingly hopping from planet to planet with warp rings. It's a cool take on the canon! It leans into the multiple world setup hard, actually doing stuff with it in the story instead of just having it be this confusing trivia factoid, and it reminds me very much of the '90s comics from both sides of the Atlantic
I would, however, say that the comic feels held back by the fact that it can't spoil the movie. Because it was made so far in advance and came out before the movie, it's only able to touch on some basic things from the first act of the movie. As such, some of the backups in particular feel kind of perfunctory, showing what the cast was up to before the start of the second movie without being able to expand upon it much. Tails and Knuckles are looking for Sonic, but we can't really get into the specifics because that's for the movie. Tails is smart, Knuckles is tough. You probably knew that already. Robotnik is surviving on the Mushroom Planet, just like how he is at the start of the movie. Stone's getting the Mean Bean coffee shop hideout set up. There are still fun moments along the way, of course, especially if you're out to absorb every little detail about this version of the canon that you can, but these really are teases for the events of the movie more than they are standalone stories in their own right
(By that metric, the main story probably fares best from a pure storytelling perspective, since it's just another standalone adventure for Sonic between movies, and it fleshes out how he's doing in Green Hills a bit more. The thing it's setting up is just the broad fact that Sonic is trying to be a superhero now, instead of, like, specifically showing how he got to Seattle for the bank truck sequence or whatever. Also, Tom does something really cool in it lol)
So, yeah, overall, it's Pretty Good. I don't think it will blow away anyone who isn't a fan of Paramount Sonic in particular, but if you are and you're hungry for more content then there's some good stuff here you'll like, on top of some general Sonic fanservice. (Stone stans in particular will probably eat that second story up.) Writer Kiel Phegley captures the style of the movies well. And, again, the art is good throughout
Look Tails gets to have a little fang!!!!! This is so important to me. Thank you Evan

Kiel Phegley, one of the writers for Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Pre-Quill, has confirmed that Jim Carrey himself spearheaded the Robotnik story!
Tumblr media
I WAS ACTUALLY HOPING THEY'D DO THIS! Have you seen the way Jim Carrey talks about Robotnik in interviews? This is going to be really cool and very strange.
Also according to the writter, this Pre-Quill will consist of five stories told across a total of forty pages!

The story I'm looking forward to the most in the Pre-Quill has got to be the Robotnik one for a few reasons:
1) I finally watched the movie a few days ago and while overall I'd say it's a 5.5/10, a lot of the stuff I did like can all be traced back to Jim Carrey and what he did to Robotnik (apparently there was a lot of freedom and ad-libbing in his performance, and even the song he danced to was his idea)
2) As mentioned by Kiel Phegley (the Pre-Quill's writer), Carrey wrote a one page outline idea for the Robotnik backup strip (though we can see now that he's not credited for it)
3) Assuming it's Mushroom With a View, the the art of the story is gonna be done by Tracy Yardley and I'm really curious to see how a cartoony artist like him renders Carreybotnik's appearance

So we got a little bit of an update about the Sonic 2 Movie Pre-Quill! Even though it was pretty recently revealed to be a four-Issue miniseries, it was just changed to being a single one-shot Issue that will be released on March 23rd. I’m not entirely sure why, but if I had to make a guess, they probably shortened the length of it so that the artists would have enough time to finish it and also work on the mainline IDW series and Imposter Syndrome at the same time. Speaking of the artists, it’s also been revealed that Adam Bryce Thomas, Tracy Yardley!, and Evan Stanley will all be doing art for it, and it was also revealed that a new writer named Kiel Phegley will either be taking over as the writer or will be writing it alongside Gale Galligan.
That’s it for the Pre-Quill news, but there is one other thing I accidentally stumbled upon recently while browsing the Sonic Wiki that I thought was interesting. So I don’t know when these were put online, and I also haven’t seen anyone acknowledge them ever, but I found these early cover layouts by Diana Skelly that would eventually become the B cover for Issue 15...
Tumblr media
Now, they all have 8 as the Issue number at the top, which either means plotpoints got shifted around dramatically at some point or that it’s a placeholder number, but there’s also something else here that really piques my interest... If you look closely at the top right one and the bottom left one, you might notice what appear to be beta Rough and Tumble. And not even Geoffrey St.John, just straight up beta Rough and Tumble!
Also, I’m assuming these were all made at different times and weren’t meant to be used for any specific Issue, mainly because the two of them that include earlier designs of Rough and Tumble would in theory have been made before the characters were finalized and revealed, which means those two specifically probably would have been made somewhere around late 2017 or early 2018, long before Issue 15 came out and before the series even begun. That also adds evidence to the Issue number being a placeholder and that they weren’t made with any specific Issue or plotpoint in mind, especially since the silhouettes of them and Starline look more finalized in the top left one. There’s also the very possible chance that I’m once again thinking way too much about this and am completely wrong, so take everything I say here with a grain of salt.

Here's something interesting: the author of the upcoming movie 2 pre-quill special (Kiel Phegley; previously wrote the novelization of the first film and is also writing the 2nd film's novelization) mentioned that Jim Carrey himself came up with the premise of the Robotnik-focused story in it
Interesting...
Regardless of how he fares as a writer for our favourite doctor, you can bet that I'm already gonna start joking that they brought him in for Eggman because they realised Flynn is no good with him. :P

Hey there Evan! I saw you did the art for Two for the Road and Always Bet on Red stories in the Sonic 2 Annual Book (I really liked the little details you did with Tails and Knuckles' designs). Was it your decision to add the Chaotix in the background as cameos? Cause it was really nice to see them in the Movie universe (hoping they appear in live action at some point too).
The writer, Kiel Phegley, asked me to include a Chaotix cameo if I could squeeze them in, so I obliged! They're tiny because I had no idea what they should look like in the movie-verse's more detailed style, and I didn't want to step on anybody's toes if they do end up in the movies someday.
I wouldn't read too much into it. It was a cameo done for fun, nothing more.

So the solicits for the movie mini just dropped and it's got a new writer, Kiel Phegley; though he's not new to Sonic, previously having written an activity book, that one Tales of Terror novel, and the novelizations for both films
I never did read either of them so Im not familiar with his work.
