Ridge Row Switching by Joseph Randall Via Flickr: Delaware-Lackawanna Job PO-74 switches out the cars they picked up earlier from NS as DL3 to assemble the train they would be taking up the Poconos. This task ended up taking way longer than it should have because they apparently were asked by the secret service to clear out the yard of any freight cars as a "security measure" in anticipation of Sleepy Uncle Amtrak Joe's visit to Steamtown the next day. Anyways, while this lead to very frustrating wait while they tried to figure out the hell they were even doing, it did at least lead to a nice afternoon chase to Pocono Summit with angles that usually wouldn't be possible to shoot with this lighting in the morning. Also, having the 2452 & 2461 on the point, the two original Erie Lackawanna engines on property, was a nice bonus as well since both of these engines would have regularly ran on this line back in the 60s & 70s. 10-19-21

STL648 by Citizen of the Galaxy Via Flickr: Of all the switchers working the Binghamton area during the early Conrail era, SW-900M No. 8648 (ex-LV 121) might have been the most popular, as the unit ran in full Lehigh Valley Cornell Red paint with black diamonds and pinstripes. I only got one decent shot of it, and here it is, from 6 January 1980, hauling cars on the ex-Lackawanna main, viewed from across the Erie side at Titchener Place in the First Ward section of the city.

What-If: American Railroads — Section 2: Railroads Absorbed (part 1)
With my alternate history on American railroads, one major part of it is that President Dwight D. Eisenhower would pass a Staggers Act of 1955, which would allow railroads to innovate and expand their operations and provide healthy competition with not only other railroads, but also cars and planes. While the big railroads (like New York Central and Chesapeake & Ohio) would greatly benefit from this, the smaller railroads (like New Haven or Western Pacific) wouldn’t be as lucky… but the smaller railroads’ territories would not go to waste as from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, the bigger railroads would absorb the smaller ones. And the smaller railroads absorbed by the bigger ones will be shown below with the big railroads’ logos being above a collection of maps of the smaller railroads.

DL 190 - ALCO PA-1 at Kansas City, KS por Zach Pumphery Por Flickr: On its way to new owner Genesee Valley Transportation Company is the famous ALCO PA-1 restored by preservationist Doyle McCormack over the past 2 decades in Portland, Oregon. The locomotive began moving east in late April from the PNW on BNSF Railway, arriving at Kansas City early this morning on BNSF Train H PASKCK9 25A, appropriately behind a warbonnet painted Dash-9. In this view, the locomotive is at the "Tall Tower" at BNSF Argentine Yard. The unit is on home rails at this former Santa Fe facility. This engine was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway by the American Locomotive Company in 12-1948 as ATSF 62-L, builder number 76541 wearing the famous red and silver Warbonnet paint scheme leading famous trains such as the "El Capitan" between Chicago and California. On 4-5-67, the Santa Fe retired the unit and sold it to Morrison–Knudsen in Boise, ID. 4 Ex-ATSF units including this one were rebuilt by MK with the "PA-4" classification, for the Delaware and Hudson on 8-11-75, with this one becoming D&H 18. Under D&H ownership, they were used by Amtrak for the "Adirondack", and later by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority hauling commuter trains around Boston. The last PA's to operate in the United States, they were sold in 1978 to the NdeM, where this one ran as DH-18 until 1981. All 4 of those PA's remain, 2 at the National Museum of Mexican Railways, and 2 in the US. In 2000, McCormack of American Freedom Train and SP 4449 fame worked with the Smithsonian Institution to bring two of these engines back to the United States. What was left of the 16 and 18 came home on flat cars to Oregon. Doyle bought a set of trucks in Canada to replace the ones that were missing when it arrived from Mexico, and the hulk of a BC Rail M420B for its 251 prime mover, electrical cabinet, and traction motors. 16 later wound up at the Museum of the American Railroad in Texas where it is steadily being restored to its Santa Fe appearance. McCormack's father worked for the NYC&STL, better known as the Nickel Plate Road, and his first cab ride when he was 12 was aboard the real NKP 190. Doyle later worked for the N&W in Ohio and an operator, eventually becoming a fireman before moving to the Pacific Northwest in the 1970's. He hired out on the SP, worked freight an passenger service for Amtrak, and has retired from the UP, all the while being heavily involved with the 4449 organization. When he restored the PA it was only natural for him to restore it to an NKP appearance, which took the better part of 2 decades to complete. The engine traveled to Spencer, NC in 2014 for the "Streamliners at Spencer" event featuring a plethora of locomotives from that era. Now in his 80's, it was announced in March 2023 that he had sold the engine to GVT after years of talks. The engine will be put into excursion service by GVT and will pull excursions in Northeastern Pennsylvanian, including former D&H track the engine ran in revenue service. Assigned "DL 190" for movement to GVT's Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad in Pennsylvania, it retains its Nickel Plate Road paint scheme. The real 190 was built in March 1948 and carried builder number 75457. For what was regarded as one of the most beautiful locomotive designs ever built, not many of these were preserved, and half of those units suffered what had been a grim fate for decades. It's nice to have a few left to enjoy. Locomotive: DL 190 5-3-23 Kansas City, KS

In February, attackers from the Russia-based BlackCat ransomware group hit a physician practice in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, that's part of the Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). At the time, LVHN said that the attack “involved” a patient photo system related to radiation oncology treatment. The health care group said that BlackCat had issued a ransom demand, “but LVHN refused to pay this criminal enterprise.”
After a couple of weeks, BlackCat threatened to publish data stolen from the system. “Our blog is followed by a lot of world media, the case will be widely publicized and will cause significant damage to your business,” BlackCat wrote on their dark-web extortion site. “Your time is running out. We are ready to unleash our full power on you!” The attackers then released three screenshots of cancer patients receiving radiation treatment and seven documents that included patient information.
The medical photos are graphic and intimate, depicting patients' naked breasts in various angles and positions. And while hospitals and health care facilities have long been a favorite target of ransomware gangs, researchers say the situation at LVHN may indicate a shift in attackers' desperation and willingness to go to ruthless extremes as ransomware targets increasingly refuse to pay.
“As fewer victims pay the ransom, ransomware actors are getting more aggressive in their extortion techniques,” says Allan Liska, an analyst for the security firm Recorded Future who specializes in ransomware. “I think we’ll see more of that. It follows closely patterns in kidnapping cases, where when victims’ families refused to pay, the kidnappers might send an ear or other body part of the victim.”
Researchers say that another example of these brutal escalations came on Tuesday when the emerging ransomware gang Medusa published sample data stolen from Minneapolis Public Schools in a February attack that came with a $1 million ransom demand. The leaked screenshots include scans of handwritten notes that describe allegations of a sexual assault and the names of a male student and two female students involved in the incident.
“Please note, MPS has not paid a ransom,” the Minnesota school district said in a statement at the beginning of March. The school district enrolls more than 36,000 students, but the data apparently contains records related to students, staff, and parents dating back to 1995. Last week, Medusa posted a 50-minute-long video in which attackers appeared to scroll through and review all the data they stole from the school, an unusual technique for advertising exactly what information they currently hold. Medusa offers three buttons on its dark-web site, one for anyone to pay $1 million to buy the stolen MPS data, one for the school district itself to pay the ransom and have the stolen data deleted, and one to pay $50,000 to extend the ransom deadline by one day.
“What’s notable here, I think, is that in the past the gangs have always had to strike a balance between pressuring their victims into paying and not doing such heinous, terrible, evil things that victims don’t want to deal with them,” says Brett Callow, a threat analyst at the antivirus company Emsisoft. “But because targets are not paying as often, the gangs are now pushing harder. It's bad PR to have a ransomware attack, but not as terrible as it once was—and it's really bad PR to be seen paying an organization that does terrible, heinous things.”
The public pressure is certainly mounting. In response to the leaked patient photos this week, for example, LVHN said in a statement, “This unconscionable criminal act takes advantage of patients receiving cancer treatment, and LVHN condemns this despicable behavior.”
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) said in its annual Internet Crime Report this week that it received 2,385 reports about ransomware attacks in 2022, totaling $34.3 million in losses. The numbers were down from 3,729 ransomware complaints and $49 million in total losses in 2021. “It has been challenging for the FBI to ascertain the true number of ransomware victims as many infections go unreported to law enforcement,” the report notes.
But the report specifically calls out evolving and more aggressive extortion behavior. “In 2022, the IC3 has seen an increase in an additional extortion tactic used to facilitate ransomware,” the FBI wrote. “The threat actors pressure victims to pay by threatening to publish the stolen data if they do not pay the ransom.”
In some ways, the change is a positive sign that efforts to combat ransomware are working. If enough organizations have the resources and tools to resist paying ransoms, attackers eventually may not be able to generate the revenue they want and, ideally, would abandon ransomware entirely. But that makes this shift toward more aggressive tactics a precarious moment.
“We really haven’t seen things like this before. Groups have done unpleasant things, but it was adults that were targeted, it wasn’t sick cancer patients or school kids,” Emsisoft's Callow says. “I hope that these tactics will bite them in the butt and that companies will say no, we cannot be seen funding an organization that does these heinous things. That’s my hope anyway. Whether they will react that way remains to be seen.”

The "Million Dollar Coaster", Rocky Glen Park, Moosic Pa. Built in 1945, this 96-foot tall, 4700-foot-long, out-and-back roller coaster quickly became the park's signature attraction. The ride, which cost $100,000 to build, was tucked between the tracks of the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valley Railroad and Glen Lake. The ride carried more than 1,000,000 riders during it's first few years of operation. The roller coaster was dismantled in 1957, and the park closed for good in 1987.

Rails to trails near me
Tumblr media
You can walk along a rail trail for miles without the You don't need a whole lot of hiking know-how or aerobic virility toĮnjoy rail trail. Because railroad grades traverse such varied terrain,Ī walk along them can be just as rewarding as hiking on conventional Passing the occasional building foundation from atop high fills, to deepĬuts through rock. Because the trains went just about everywhere, the sceneryĬonstantly changes along these paths through towns, woods and farmland, Walking along these paths I cannot helpīut imagine how it once looked, and the people whose lives depended on Level paths of black cinder dirt or ballast stone connecting towns and Nearly all the railroads have, of course, been abandoned tracks removed,īuildings demolished. Washington, Blairstown, Oxford, Sparta, Bound Brook, Netcong, Port Morris,Īnd others, were all key locations for the railroads. The hills and valleys of the Northwest New Jersey Skylands. Each had its own characterĪnd personality, and shared one thing in common-they regularly worked Western (NYS&W) Lehigh and New England (L&NE) Pennsylvania Lackawanna and Western (DL&W) Lehigh New York, Susquehanna and Larger companies like the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) Delaware, (Bel-Del), Morris & Essex, Warren, Sussex & Warren gave way to Early steam train lines like the Belvidere-Delaware Lives focused on the railroad, relying on it for industry, food, employment,Īnd transportation. At one time, nearly every town in New Jersey was servedīy rail, despite the great effort they took to construct. Wonder of how such a bold piece of our area's history could fade into On the old DL&W line through Warren County, I have had an affinityįor exploring the paths left along these rights of way, always in absolute Since my grandfather first took me hiking

Bridges Not in Parke County: a Very Winding Drive in Putnam County – or – Several Bridges Over Big Walnut Creek (actually near it in this case).
While heading north from Hauck Bridge on the road to Oakalla, I came around a bend in the road and saw a substantial railroad viaduct.  It was quite a surprise, and it looks very much like of a viaduct I saw in 2015 on a road trip that took me through the northeast corner of Pennsylvania:

though the structure in Indiana is rather smaller.
The Lackawanna RR’s Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct at Nicholson, PA (above and below) was opened to rail traffic in Fall 1915, and though the creek proper is nothing so much, the wide valley was an impediment to train traffic on this line as it was being built.  The solution, of course, was to just throw a very long bridge across the whole thing!
Tumblr media
Photos really don’t convey just how huge the thing is.
The viaduct in Indiana (below) was, I’d think, likely thrown for a similar reason: rather than find a way to take the rail route down and back up, why not just keep on going at the same grade?

According to bridgehunter.com, the Little Walnut Creek rail road bridge was built in 1906 for the “Big Four” Railroad, and is 345 feet long over-all.  The Tunkhannock, by contrast, is 2,375 feet long over-all -- just a bit’ve a difference.
