Love Is For Suckers
Tumblr media
It had been a while since I watched a nice romantic comedy. It had a little bit of everything and there was substance in the plot. I liked the characters and their stories. The friendship between Jae Hoon and Yeo Reum feels natural and genuine. And I like the quartet of high school friends: Yeo Reum, Jae Hoon, Dae Shik and Hye Jin.
You could say this series is divided into two parts. The first one is where we see Jae Hoon's love for Yeo Reum. The friendship that he doesn't want to cross, afraid of being rejected because she is still hung up on the finance who left her. Kim In Woo returns after living in the United States for many years. He now wants to get back together with Yeo Reum. She goes back to him mostly because she keeps thinking about how they were before he left. She doesn't want to face the fact that they have both changed.
The second half of the series focuses on how Yeo Reum realizes and faces the fact that she is in love with Jae Hoon. And this happens in the process of producing Kingdom of Love 2 where he became a participant to replace a person who left at he last minute. But in this reality show will also be participating the young woman his mother made him have a blind date with months ago.
Here we are introduced to another set of characters that also caught my attention. I became invested in Ji Wan's and Chef John's story. Chef John, who had been a jerk in the first part of the series, gets to show us a different side of him that makes us forget that first side we saw earlier.
I won't go into too many details, but I liked how each character faces their sadness, difficulties and move on. I like the fact that those characters we learned to care for have their happy ending.
This is a really sweet story and I recommend it!

Spring Days 7
Story: 7
Acting: 9
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Heaven’s Coin (kdrama)
Considering this is an oldie kdrama, 2005, to be exact, nuttiness and cliche’ness is going to be expected. You know the average amnesia, love triangle, rich boy/poor girl, nasty parent sort of deal. For me I love the old classic dramas so I don’t mind the overdramatic moments which this can seem to be dialed up to a hundred. It’s also nice to see all the actors in their younger years, Jo In Sung was just as brilliant in his early twenties as he is now, as well as Ji Jin Hee, Go Hyun Jung, Han Go Eun. I will add it does have one of the most long LONG looooooong frustrating love triangles ever and the female lead is written in a way where sometimes you just want to throttle her.

The Uncanny Counter (2020)
Tumblr media
All you really need are noodles and comic books. And this show has both!
This show was the break I needed from super serious drama-land. It's got pretty good action, some nice urban fantasy vibes, and a cast that seemed to be having alot of fun with their roles. The premise is a little bonkers, but that's fine too.
What Worked
The cast really made this work. The leads were fun and all had great chemistry together and the villains were just scary, both the human and the supernatural ones. In fact, I think the writing for the villains was better than the heroes, and what kept me hooked on the show.
What Didn't Work
There weren't any real issues with the show, it succeeded at making the kind of show it set out to be, but the writing felt extremely comic book. And not always in a good way. We had a literal Joseph Campbell "hero" arc in the first two episodes. There was a character who was almost, but not quite, fridged in a series with multiple fakeout deaths. There were about 4-5 episodes where you could tell they were filling out time and ran out of story arc.
I'm pointing this out because overall I really enjoyed the show. I just wish it could have been a little bit better. But they're planning on making a second series, and hopefully that will go somewhere good!
The Performances
Jo Byung-gyu as So Mun. Pretty much the title hero of this comic book show, he did an amazing job of selling both the young high school arc and the supernatural / super hero stuff. I can't complain about the acting, though I do have some quibbles with the "chosen one" writing arc. There are very few scenes that are weak, it's just the overall direction they took the character that felt a little cliche.
Yoo Jun-sang as Ga Mo-tak. He plays a former detective who had amnesia after a ten story fall. Seven years later, he's coming back from the dead to seek vengeance on the criminals who stole his life away.
What I'm saying is this role could easily have turned super campy, but the actor made it work really well. I liked his arc better than the main story for the most part (except for the stupid not-quite-fridging).
Kim Se-jeong as Do Ha-na. I've only seen her in Business Proposal and I liked her much better in this role. She had pretty good comic timing in Business Proposal and she plays it almost completely straight here, and again does a good job with a character that has some potential campiness.
Yeom Hye-ran as Choo Mae-ok. I loved this character, but then I play a healer in most of the RPGs I run, so it makes sense. I liked her role in When the Camilla Blooms but it's nice to see her play someone a little less grumpy. (**spoiler**) Her character was a victim of a number of fakeout deaths, which I didn't like, but I think I would have rioted if they killed her, so it's kind of a tough call.
Choi Yoon-young as Kim Jeong-yeong. The actor did a good job making a side character interesting and she had great chemistry with Yoo Jun-sang. They could have done so much more with this character, but (**spoilers**) they killed her off instead. It kind of annoyed me, though they didn't treat the character like a cheap action movie death, which is something.
Ahn Suk Hwan as Chairman Choi. I had fun watching this character and you could tell the actor did too. Not particularly deep or interesting, but very colorful and the show was better when he showed up.
Lee Hong-nae as Ji Chung-sin. This guy played an amazing creepy villain. The writing put the character right on the edge of the line of campy horror, but he kept it from getting ridiculous, and I got literal chills a few times.
Ok Ja-yeon as Baek Hyang-hui. This character was meant to be a little campy, entertaining at times, but campy. And the actress did a good job following the brief. I can't say I enjoyed watching her, but I never got bored.
Choi Kwang-il as Shin Myung-hwi. He starts out as a kind of cardboard villain, but did a good job leaning into the horror elements at the end of the show.
The High School Kids. This is one of the things that the show got really right, tone-wise. The way the bullies took over the school was completely bonkers, and there were no adults anywhere pretty much, but that's kind of how the world feels when you're a teenager. All of the relationships and rivalries feel like these world changing events, and all of the grownups feel a bit like the adults in a Charlie Brown cartoon. The actors all did a great job with this.
The Street Thugs. I liked the rivalries here with Mo-tak. They were campy when they needed to be and scary when they were supposed to be (especially at the start of the series). Mostly they're just mooks, but they're entertaining mooks.
TL; DR:
This show is fun, and scary, and sad when it needs to be, but it's impossible to take seriously, which is why I enjoyed it!

At that time, teachers Na Young-hee, Lee Hwi-hyang, and Seonwoo Eun-sook helped me well, so I was able to finish well,” she said.
Then, she said, “I did a drama called ‘Elegant Mother and Daughter’ and the director chose me, so I did it for the second time. It was the director's last project, so I'm thankful that he chose me. I was grateful to actor Lee Hyun-jin for being with me,” he added.
Cha Ye-ryun also expressed her gratitude to her family. Cha Ye-ryun said, "I'm going to be with my mother-in-law and son Joo Sang-wook, who are watching on TV, at the festival on the last day of December, and for the first time in an official position, I want to say I love you and thank you." thank you so much mom I am grateful to my husband, Lee Bang-won, Joo Sang-wook, whom I love the most in the world. Cha Ye-ryun and Lee Hwi-hyang joined hands...
Tumblr media
Cha Ye-ryun and Lee Hwi-hyang held hands.
In the KBS 2TV daily drama 'Golden Mask', which was broadcast on the 10th, Yoo Su-yeon (Cha Ye-ryun) was drawn under Ko Mi-sook (Lee Hwi-hyang).
Cha Hwa-yeong (Na Young-hee) threatens her visiting Yoo Su-yeon with pictures of her affair, and instructs Hong Jin-woo (Lee Jung-moon) to marry her Seo Yura (Yeon Min-ji). To Jin-woo Hong, who refused, saying, “We just recently divorced, you are single now no matter how old you are. It doesn’t matter. Did you not know that love is everything? To Cha Hwa-young, "judgment by this," Hong Jin-woo said, "I understand what you mean, but I have no intention of getting married yet."
But Cha Hwa-young threatened her with the fact that Hong Jin-ah (Gong Dai-im) could become her successor. When Cha Hwa-young said, "Don't assume that you are her only successor," Hong Jin-woo said nothing.
Meanwhile, Yoo Su-yeon gets a job at a restaurant on the recommendation of Noh Young-ji (Lee Joo-eun). The restaurant where Su-yeon Yoo worked is a restaurant that Mi-sook Ko is acquainted with, and the news of Su-yeong Yoo's employment was delivered to Mi-sook Ko. Ko Mi-sook went to the restaurant where Yoo Soo-yeon worked with Cha Hwa-young to make her tea Hwa-young in trouble.
Cha Hwa-young feels annoyed at Ko Mi-sook, who told Yoo Su-yeon, "She resembles the former daughter-in-law of the SA group. But no matter how divorced, I can't let her work in a place like this." She then ridiculed Ko Mi-sook's poor dining etiquette, her nephew, and she made Ko Mi-sook into trouble.
Yoo Su-yeon, the daughter-in-law of her former chaebol family, helped Ko Mi-sook, who was embarrassed. With the help of her Yoo Soo-yeon, Ko Mi-sook, who continued her dining etiquette, went to visit Yoo Su-yeon. To Mi-sook Ko's words, "Be my person. Please be a manners consultant. You can stick by my side and teach me manners," Yoo Su-yeon replied, "Would I dare to teach the president? I will only accept the suggestion with gratitude."

All the dramas I’ve watched in 2020
These are all the dramas that I watched in 2020, with some review there should be NO Spoilers. I think I watched a lot more than usual probably because what else am I supposed to do between school and quarantine. So this is gonna be a long one...
Crash Landing on You (Lee Jung-hyo, 2019-2020)
Main Leads: Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin
Episodes: 16, 70 to 110 Minutes
Thoughts: I enjoyed this drama, and it was a good one to start 2020 with. I thought it was a perfect blend of romance, comedy, heartfelt, found family, action, and some tragedy. I would highly recommend it, especially for those who are new to Kdramas. Also fun fact this is my first Hyun Bin drama. Rating: Fun and adorable
Tale of Nokdu (Kim Dong-hwi, 2019)
Main Leads: Jang Dong Yoon and Kim So Hyun
Episodes: 32, 35 minutes
Thoughts: I actually started watching this when it was airing but I stopped around episode 13 because of my busy schedule and finished it in the new year. I adore the main couple, the romance, comedy, the found family, and the women center story. I thought it shined the brightest when it was focused on the group and its funny and warm moments but once it got too political it kinda fell flat. I loved the ending, however. Also, I really like Jang Dong Young as an actor, I saw him in Solomon’s Perjury (2016) and Mr. Sunshine (2018) and I loved how he played Nok Du too. Rating: I love a women’s only widow village
I’ll Find You When The Weather is Nice (Han Ji-seung, 2020)
Main Leads: Seo Kang Joon and Park Min Young
Episodes: 16, 60 minutes
Thoughts: I really liked this drama, probably one of my favorites this year. As you will notice I enjoy quieter and more slow-burn stories. Also, I am a fan of Park Min Young she tends to pick more interesting and strong-willed female roles, so it is really enjoyable to watch.  Rating: makes me want to own a book store.
King: The Eternal Monarch (Kim Eun-sook, 2020)
Main Leads: Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun
Episodes: 16, 70 Minutes
Thoughts: Confession; I am actually not the biggest fan of Lee Min Ho, nothing against him I just hate rich bratty characters and he tends to play them. However, I surprisingly really liked his character, he wasn’t a rich brat he actually was likable. I also really like Kim Go Eun, she is actually one of the main reasons why I watched and also with all the hype around it. Woo Do Hwan, who I have always liked, stole the whole show, however. I didn’t hate it like a lot of people, I really liked the characters, I liked the romance and the action. Also, Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun’s hugs were absolutely fabulous. It wasn’t my favorite and there were too many product placements, but I don’t think it was the worst drama this year. Rating: Lukewarm
A Piece of your mind (Lee Sang-yeob, 2020)
Main Leads: Jung Hae In and Chae Soo Bin
Episodes: 12, 70 minutes
Thoughts: I actually really liked this drama despite the low views, again I’m big on slow burn stories and character focus. I believe the episodes were cut from 16 to 12 I don’t know exactly why maybe because of the Pandemic or due to viewership or a mixture of both. Despite its being cut short I really liked the ending, and I thought the two leads were sweet. Rating: Wish we had more time to develop the characters.
Its Okay not to be Okay (Park Shin Woo, 2020)
Main Leads: Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Yea Ji and Oh Jung Se
Episodes: 16, 70 to 85 minutes
Thoughts: Out of all the dramas I talked the most about this one. I have always been a fan of Seo Yea Ji since Save Me (2017) and Lawless Lawyer (2018) and I am happy to see her getting more recognition because of this role. The entire cast was amazing and I think I cried every episode. Such a good and heart-wrenching drama which is why I chose to watch it before work every time. Rating: I would let Seo Yea Ji stab me with a knife anytime.
Mystic Pop up bar (Jeon Chang-geun, 2020)
Main Leads: Hwang Jung Eum and Yook Sung Jae and Choi Won Young
Episodes: 12, 70 minutes
Thoughts: I actually watched this while I was watching Its Okay Not to Be Okay and it was a nice balance to it because this was more of a found family story with less heartbreaking moments. Though it did have its share of heartbreak. I really liked all the characters and their relationship. Also, I am a sucker for bureaucratic fantasy/ magic, and kdramas are so good at it. Rating: I wish it was 16 episodes.
When the Camila Bloom (Cha Yeong Hoon, 2019)
Main Leads: Gong Hyo Jin and Kang Ha Neul
Episodes: 20, 63 to 75 minutes
Thoughts: I liked the story overall, the romance was cute and the mystery was interesting but I thought the family expectations was the best part of the story. This was not my favorite drama, but it was enjoyable and heartfelt. I watched it right after It's Okay Not to Be Okay and while I was watching Flower of Evil (2020) which probably is why I was so underwhelmed by it. Rating: Sweet romance and adorable found family.
Flower of Evil (Kim Cheol Kyu, 2020)
Main Leads: Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won
Episode:16, 70 minutes
Thoughts: This was my favorite drama of this year. I went into this drama not thinking much of it, and I mainly watched it as a post drama blues drama. It was an action and thriller which I mainly don’t get attached to plus I am a huge fan of Lee Joon Gi. I should have known better, I cared so much about all the characters, the acting phenomenal, also every time they showed their hands I cried. This drama left me shriveled and empty inside. Rating: Lee Joon Gi will literally kill me one day.
Put Your Head On My Shoulders (Zhu Dongning, 2019)
Main Leads: Xing Fei and Lin Yi
Episodes: 24, 40 to 45 minutes
Thoughts: This is the first Chinese drama on this list. I thought it was cute, I liked the couple and thought it was alright. I started to dislike the male lead later in the series but it was overall fine. It was basic and sweet with very little drama. Rating: It did its job.
The School Nurse Files ( Lee Kyoung Mi, 2020)
Main Leads: Jung Yu Mi and Nam Joo Hyuk
Episodes: 6,  45 to 57 minutes
Thoughts: This is probably my second favorite drama. I couldn’t tell what happened in the drama but I loved it. I thought it was weird and fascinating, and just so magical. I loved the children and just how the whole school was just off its rocker. I also think that Nam Joo Hyuk does really well in serious roles, and I thought he did a really good job here. Rating: 1 jelly heart.
Mr. Heart (Park Sun Jae, 2020)
Main Leads: Cheon Seung Ho and Lee Se Jin
Episodes: 8, 11 Minutes
Thoughts: This was 8 episodes of start fluff and I adored it. Apparently, it is apart of a BL series by Park Sun Jae and there is a movie version that I haven’t watched. If you want to destress and watch just fluff this is the show for you. Rating: If it is any sweeter I would be going to the dentist.
You are My Destiny ( Ding Ying Zhou, 2020)
Main Leads: Xing Zhao Lin  and Liang Jie
Episodes: 36, 45 minutes
Thoughts: I hated this drama, I thought it was the worst thing ever. I don’t know why I even watched all 36 episodes. Apparently, it is a remake of a popular 2008 Twaniese drama Fated to Love You and there is a Korean remake of it as well. I have watched neither of them, so I was brand new to this story. I hated, despised the male lead. He was whiny, entitled, and an asshole. The only good part of the drama was the male and female lead actually had a lot of chemistry, unfortunately, they are playing awful characters. Rating: This was made in 2020???
First Romance (Ding Pei, 2020)
Main Leads: Wan Peng and Riley Wang
Episodes: 24, 45 Minutes
Thoughts: This is another Chinese drama. Similar to Mr. Heart (2020) this show was super fluffy. I really liked the main couple they seem to respect each other and they both had adorable crushes on each other. I loved the whole dumb jock and dumb artist dynamic it was so funny. Rating: Cute!!!
Lost Romance ( Eri Hao, 2020)
Main Leads: Marcus Chang and Vivian Sung
Episodes: 20, 70 minutes
Thoughts: This is the only Twainese drama on this list. I think I liked this drama, I actually only remember very little of this drama. I like the CEO in the real world more than the book world, and I also really liked the female lead except she lowkey stalked the CEO like that was not okay. Rating: I think I liked it???
When We Were Young ( Deng Ke, Liu Guo Hui, 2018)
Main Leads: Neo Hou and Wan Peng and Gala Zhang and Pan Mei and Ye Marcus Li
Episodes: 24, 45 minutes
Thoughts: I really liked this film, I loved all the characters and thought it was all very heartfelt. I cried like a baby, and Hua Biao was such a touching and relatable character. And the whole grandma story hit so close to home. Rating: Made me cry like a baby.
Moment of 18 ( Sim Na Yeon, 2019)
Main Leads: Ong Seong Wu and Kim Hyang Gi
Episodes: 16, 70 minutes
Thoughts: I really liked this drama, and I thought the romance was so cute. I also really liked the relationship between the moms and was sad that the rich mom was a bitch and ruined the friendship. I also wasn’t a big fan of the ending, but I loved the rest of it. Rating: The main lead is part of a boy group because he had a random singing moment.
Perfect and Casual ( Li Shuang, 2020)
Main Leads: Miles Wei and Xu Ruo Han
Episodes: 24, 45 minutes
Thoughts: This is another Chinese drama on this list. I’m pretty sure it's considered an Idol drama so that sets your expectations. I really liked this drama a lot, I am a big fan of contract marriages and I thought the leads were so cute together. Also, this is the first contract marriage drama where the leads don’t break up which I like. A lot of the drama came from outside of the relationship. Rating: You can’t analyze love.
Le Coup De Foudre ( Wang Zhi, 2019)
Main Leads: Janice Wu and Zhang Yujian
Episodes: 35, 45 minutes
Thoughts: My favorite Chinese drama on this list. I loved this drama, I thought it was sweet and simple and the main couple was so realistic. Unpopular opinion I disliked the second couple and the best friend I thought she was annoying and brattish. However, I adore the main couple and their relationship. Rating: Realistic sweet romance.
More Than Friends ( Choi Sung Bum, 2020)
Main Leads: Ong Seong Wu and Shin Ye Eun
Episodes: 16, 70 minutes
Thoughts: I enjoyed the overall story and characters. I loved the group and their relationships. Also, Young-Hee made me cry, and her relationship with Hyun Jae was so sweet. The main leads were also sweet, and I related a lot to Lee So. I just didn’t like the back and forth. Rating: How many times can we break up in a drama.
Be With You ( Zhou Miao, 2020)
Main Leads: Ji Xiao Bing and Zhang Ya-Qin
Episodes: 24, 45 minutes
Thoughts: This is the last Chinese drama I watched this year. It was alright, the romance was sweet, I really like the female lead, and the male lead was nice to look at. It was okay. Also, the second couple was so ??? She was his boss, enemy, and older than him, what?? Rating: Sometimes you need to fall in love to be creative.
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo ( Kim Kyu Tae, 2016)
Main Leads: Lee Joon Gi and Lee Ji Eun (IU)
Episodes: 20, 60 minutes
Thoughts: I know I am really late watching this, but I finally did. I went in knowing this would hurt me and Lee Joon Gi already scared me this year ( damn this man) so I was fully prepared. I really wasn’t,  it so much. (SPOIlERS) When Wang Eun and Park Soon Deok died I sob like a baby (SPOILER ENDING). It took me a long time to finish this show because its heart so much, like it physically hurt me. The show was really good, and heartbreaking, and the ending stabs me in the heart 20 times. Rating: Lee Joon Gi is trying to kill me with tears.
Persona ( Lee Kyoung Mi, Yim Pil Sung, Jeon Go Woon, and Kim Jong Kwan, 2019)
Main Leads: Lee Ji Eun (IU)
Episodes: 4, 19 to 27
Thoughts: This is a collection of mini-films by directors. 4 separate stories are starring Lee Ji Eun. I thought all of them good, especially “ Kiss Burn” and “Walking at Night.” There isn’t much else to this, more than it is an artistic display of filmmaking. Rating: Hipster Kdrama
Come and Hug Me ( Choi Joon-bae, 2018)
Main Leads: Jang Ki-Yong and Jin Ki-Joo
Episodes: 32, 35 minutes
Thoughts: I actually just finished this show today. I really liked it, I thought it was both sweet and heartwarming/wrenching. I hated that one journalist and the public like why are they blaming a victim. I didn’t watch it with my full mind because I’ve been distracted lately, but I did enjoy it. Rating: another cute but sad couple.
Movies I watched this year:
Spell Bound ( Hwang In Ho, 2011)
Main Cast: Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ki
Running Time: 114 Minutes
Thoughts: I watched this at like 12 am after a bad day and it was cute. I love RomCom fantasy, which I think Korean media does really well. I don’t know what else to say except it is a really cute romance. Rating: Is it the ghost or the butterflies
The Host ( Bong Joon Ho, 2006)
Main Cast: Song Kang Ho and Byun Hee Bong and Park Hae Il and Bae Doona and Go, Ah Sung
Running Time: 119
Thoughts: This film I had to actually watch for class. It was a really good film which is expected from Bong Joon Ho. I love monster films and I thought this was a good rendition of this film. Also, The monster was so cool especially from 2006. I thought it was heartbreaking, stirring, and so beautifully shot. Rating: Oscar-worthy Direction
Little Forest ( Yim Soon-rye, 2018)
Main Cast: Kim Tae Ri  and Ryu Jun Yeol and Moon So Ri and Jin Ki Joo
Running Time: 103 minutes
Thoughts: I really, really liked this film. It reminded me so much of I’ll Find You When The Weather is Nice (2020) that I thought that it was based on this film but it isn’t. I have watched this film 3 times since October and every time I watch it have made bread. I really just love everything about this film, how quiet it is, the cinematography, the acting, just everything. Rating: Three loaves of bread.
Always ( Song Il Gon, 2011)
Main Cast: So Ji Sub and Han Hyo Joo
Running Time: 106 Minutes
Thoughts: I thought it was okay, I watched it while I was knitting so I was distracted a bit. But I thought the couple was sweet, and the characters were interesting. Rating: It's Okay.
       Currently watching
True Beauty ( Kim Sang-hyeop, 2020-)
Main Cast: Moon Ga Young and Cha Eun Woo and Hwang In Yeop
Episodes: 16, 70 minutes
Thoughts: This is currently an ongoing series that is actually really popular. Apparently, it is based on a webtoon, which I haven’t read. I like it so far, I always liked Moon Ga Young and I think she is a great actress. She plays Im Ju Kyung in a likable and insecure way, instead of someone annoying which could easily happen. I will be continuing watching. Rating so far: Okey dokey yo.
Live On ( Kim Sang-woo, 2020-)
Main Cast: Jung Da Bin and Hwang Min Hyun
Episodes: 8?, 60 Minutes
Thoughts: I really Like this show. The main couple is sweet and supportive. I really like the female lead, I like that she is cold and kinda quiet, but with a sweet spot if you are not a dick. I really like the main relationship conflict comes from friendship instead of romance, I think it makes the show more interesting. Rating: I want to Join a Broadcast group.
On My List:
I actually don’t have anything else on my list so if anyone has recommendations please tell me. I am thinking about watching Mr. Queen ( 2020) because I really like Shin Hye Sun. I also want to watch Sweet Home (2020) the Netflix series. But please recommend me some dramas!!!
This is such a long list, and I had fun doing it and going back over all the dramas. I hope everyone has a good New year and that we will have many more good dramas in 2021!

8 BURNING QUESTIONS WE HAVE BEFORE THE UNCANNY COUNTER ENDS
Can’t believe the first season is almost over!
Tumblr media
The Uncanny Counter is entrancing viewers with its marvelous world where demon hunters capture evil spirits using their special abilities. From the unique story to the heartwarming relationships and the exciting action, it’s no surprise how popular the series is. With only two episodes left, there are some burning questions we have. Check them out below.
1. Who will win when Baek Hyang-hui and Do Ha-na face off?
Tumblr media
Baek Hyang-hui (Ok Ja-yeon) and Do Ha-na (Kim Se-jeong) had a pretty fierce fight when they first met inside an elevator. At the end of episode 14, Hyang-hui taunts Ha-na and breaks her staff. Hyang-hui provoked Ha-na by talking about whether she should kill all of the Counters or kill all of them except Ha-na, poking at her survivor’s guilt. Hyang-hui has some screws loose, but she is definitely an intriguing villain. Can’t wait to see a final fight between them!
2. Will Shin Hyeok-u help So Mun?
Tumblr media
Shin Hyeok-u (Jung Won-chang) started out bullying So Mun (Cho Byeong-kyu), but he’s no longer the top dog after his father is accused of murder. So Mun helps Hyeok-u when his former friends are beating him up and demanding money. However, Hyeok-u is too proud to thank So Mun. Hyeok-u noticed that his father changed, but refused to help So Mun. Will Hyeok-u change his mind and help So Mun later? Is it too much to hope the two of them can be friends someday?
3. How does Son Ho-jun’s character play into all of this?
Tumblr media
The preview at the end of episode 14 teased a cameo from actor Son Ho-jun. Son Ho-jun is making a special appearance due to having worked with director You Sun-dong before. So Mun encounters Oh Jeong-gu (Son Ho-jun) and they ask each other if they are Counters. Jeong-gu has the trademark curly hair, so all he needs is a red tracksuit. Our theory? He might be a Counter from a different country, but it’ll be interesting to see how he can potentially help them defeat Shin Myeong-hwi (Choi Guang-il).
4. Will the Counters be able to defeat Ji Cheong-sin/Shin Myeong-hwi?
Tumblr media
Ji Cheong-sin (Lee Hong-nae) proved to be a very difficult demon to capture as he killed his host and went on to enter Shin Myeong-hwi. The Counters tried to take down Shin Myeong-hwi, but the evil spirit already knew their tactics. With one of the special staff broken, the Counters need a brand new plan. Unfortunately, Shin Myeong-hwi is becoming more and more powerful as he devours more souls and regains energy. How will the Counters overtake him?
5. Will So Mun be able to meet his parents?
Tumblr media
Since Ji Cheong-sin died, it remains unclear what happened to all the souls the demon devoured. This is an agonizing situation for So Mun who desperately wants to meet his parents again. There is hope that summoning the demon out of Shin Myeong-hwi will release all the souls, including that of So Mun’s parents. Hopefully So Mun will be able to meet his parents by the end. Heads up from us: better get some tissues prepared!
6. Will the Counters be able to meet Cheol-jung again?
Tumblr media
Speaking of a tearful reunion, the Counters are hoping to meet Cheol-jung as well. Since he was So Mun’s predecessor, the Counters have a history with him and they were so heartbroken over his death in episode 1. Cheol-jung helped save lives as a Counter, so he also deserves to rest peacefully in the afterlife. Lots of teary reunions ahead!
7. Will there be romance between Chu Mae-ok and Choi Jang-mul?
Tumblr media
Choi Jang-mul (Ahn Seok-hwan) has been a bit obvious about his feelings for Chu Mae-ok (Yeom Hye-ran). Ms. Chu has been rebuffing his flirty advances, but it seems like she might be interested in him as well. They have known each other for a while, having worked together as Counters before. It would be cute to see a little bit of a silver romance.
8. Will there be romance between So Mun and Ha-na?
Tumblr media
Perhaps another romance highly anticipated by fans is one between So Mun and Ha-na. So Mun’s crush is quite adorable, the boy even drew a heart when writing about her special ability in episode 2. So Mun’s still a high school student, so Ha-na might not be eager to start a romance. However, she keeps up with the ruse of her being his girlfriend in front of So Mun’s grandparents. Even if a romance doesn’t work out this season, maybe we can see one in the next season?
What questions do you have? Don’t miss out on the final episodes of The Uncanny Counter this Saturday and Sunday at 11PM, only on Netflix!

The Jona Awards: Kdrama 2019
Favorite Heroine
Tumblr media
Jang Man Wol from Hotel Del Luna
***
There were other great heroines this year who were in much better dramas than HDL, but nobody who so completely defined and carried the whole drama as Man Wol. IU’s Ji An was my favorite of heroine, and this year feels like the natural continuation of her arc as a lead actress. It wouldn’t break my heart if IU occupied this space every year.
Runners Up: Cha Woo Kyung from Children of Nobody, Eun Dan Ho from Extraordinary You, Lee Eun Jung from Be Melodramatic, Kim Hye Ja from The Light In Your Eyes
Favorite Hero
Tumblr media
Go Ji Seok from Catch the Ghost
***
For all the issues I ended up having with this drama in the last few weeks of its run, none of them had to do with Kim “Dimples” Sun Ho or the character of Ji Seok who hit the sweet spot of competent, righteous police officer and soft, affectionate boyfriend goals. His acting is on point. I really hope we see more lead roles from Kim Sun Ho in the future and his star keeps rising, rather than being forced to watch him descend back into second lead hell.
Runners Up: Hwi from My Country, Kang Ji Heon from Children of Nobody
Favorite OST
youtube
“Your Shampoo Scent in the Flowers” by Jang Beom June from Be Melodramatic
***
There was a lot of great music in dramas this year, but even if it’s kind of an expected pick I’ve just listened to this song so many times, and went so far as to write the lyrics out on my fridge so I could practice singing along. I love the original version best, but the ballad and actor sung versions are great too. It’s just a great tune and a real earworm.
Runners Up: “The Street You Left” by Liver and Gallbladder from When the Devil Calls Your Name; Basic the whole OST from When the Devil Calls Your Name actually; “WOW” by Mamamoo from Search: WWW
Guiltiest Pleasure
Tumblr media
The Last Empress
***
I can’t believe this drama finished airing in February. It feels like a long time ago in another life that I watched this with my roommate, cringing and laughing myself sick all the way through. Maybe it’s because this drama feels like it was ripped from a different decade. Jang Na Ra seems to be in a different drama than everyone else, one that’s way better than this one. There’s something just so absurd and delicious about this drama. Good for watching with friends and booze on hand.
Bitterest Disappointment
Tumblr media
Catch The Ghost
***
I became totally obsessed with this drama during the first half of the run. It didn’t get picked up by any of the major streaming sites I use and it didn’t have a big following, but I was all over social media trying to find content and conversation about this show. After the first 6 episodes or so I really thought this one was going to end up in my top 10 this year, if not my top 5. Alas, it didn’t turn out that way. This drama has major writing problems. The central couple and their arcs are solid and well acted by the leads. However, what passes for the murder mystery is so thin and convoluted, and it completely takes over the drama for much of the last two weeks, rendering episodes 14 and 15 nearly unwatchable. I still adore the lead couple and think they have amazing chemistry, overall they saved the drama for me. That’s why it didn’t make it onto my worst list. It’s really sad, though, to have to rate down a drama you really liked because major writing flaws meant it couldn’t stick the ending.
Runners Up: The Lies Within, Arthdal Chronicles, Memories of the Alhambra
Best Friendship
Tumblr media
Eun Jung, Jin Joo and Han Joo in Be Melodramatic
***
Of all the dramas I watched this year, this one made me feel the best, made me feel genuine joy whenever I watched it. I found the three leads delightfully funny, inspiring, and relatable. Easily one of the best portrayals of female friendship this year, and my personal favorite.
Runner Up: Dong Baek and Hyang Mi in When the Camellia Blooms
Best Kiss
youtube
Ja In and Yi Kang in Nokdu Flower
***
There were a lot of good kisses this year, and many of them were much flashier and steamier than this one. But the reason this one stuck out in my mind was because of the conviction with which the actors pulled it off. It came at the perfect moment of tension for the characters and the story, and it’s just beautifully shot.
Runners Up: Park Bench Kiss from One Spring Night; 11th Hour Kiss from Catch the Ghost
Most Cathartically Makjang
Tumblr media
SKY Castle
It took me a while to get around to this one, and I thought I might just skip it. I didn’t expect it to blow up as much as it did in Korea, nor to have such a positive reception in the West. When I did watch it I watched it fast, this drama is very addictive. Though the ending was a bit of an anticlimax in my opinion, I’m sorry I waited so long to try it. Also, as someone who loves a while variety of twisted psychos in her fiction, this drama has one of the most unique and fascinating villains I’ve run across.
Runner Up: The Last Empress
Villain I Most Loved To Hate
Tumblr media
Nam Jeon from My Country
***
Not a lot to add here. Ahn Nae Sang is incredible, and he made me seriously contemplate stabbing a fictional character every time he was on screen.
Messiest Plot
Tumblr media
When the Devil Calls Your Name
***
This drama had ambition, and I respect that. However, I don’t think it was well enough thought out or well enough executed to pull off what it was attempting. That’s a shame, because it could have been a really interesting Faust-type story if it could have remained a little more focused and really fleshed out Ha Rip and the central relationships rather than running hither and yon with all that confusing world building.
Runner Up: Memories of the Alhambra, Catch the Ghost
Please Make Another Drama Together
Tumblr media
Jeon Yeo Bin and Seon Seok Ku
***
These two beautiful weirdos play off each other so very well in Be Melodramatic, even though their scenes were sparse and only started deep into the drama’s run, they left a huge impact on me. I could have easily watched a whole drama just about them, and I would love to see them work on a project together again someday.
Runners Up: Kim Sun Ho and Moon Geun Young, Seo Kang Joon and Kim Hyun Joo
Best Korean Movie
Tumblr media
Parasite
***
I didn’t watch a lot of films this year, but I made it a point see this one. Probably the least controversial pick I could have possibly made. I’m glad this movie has blown up internationally, and the 6 Oscar nominations it got are so very deserved. I feel like I need to rewatch this 6 or 7 times to really appreciate it.
Best Screen Couple
Tumblr media
Yang Se Jang and Woo Do Hwan in My Country
***
I agonized about this pick for a number of reasons. There were a lot of romantic couples that I felt for strongly this year, and I nearly gave this pick to one of them, but none of them quite had the gut-punch intensity of these two. Though this is technically not a canon pairing, this drama has a palpable underlying homoeroticism throughout. Emotionally and structurally this plays out like a lurid, tragic romance between these two and the leads carry it off so perfectly I find it impossible to believe that that’s unintentional.
Runners Up: Moon Geun Young and Kim Sun Ho in Catch The Ghost; Jung Hae In and Han Ji Min in One Spring Night

À la suite d’un incident criminel, les relations entre trois amis de longue date, vont considérablement se détériorer.
Origine du film : Corée du Sud Réalisateur : Lee Do-yun Scénaristes : Lee Do-yun Acteurs : Ji Sung, Sung Hyuk, Ju Ji-hoon, Lee Kwang-soo, Lee Hwi-hyang, Ki Gook-seo, Choi Jin-ho, Jung Ji-yoon, Jang Hee-jin, Jang Hee-jin, Choi Byung-mo, Ri Min, Hwang Chae-won, Yang Jae-young Musique : Jang Young-gyu Genre : Drame, Thriller Durée : 114 minutes Date de sortie : 14 juillet 2014 (Corée) Année de production : 2014 Sociétés de production : Opus Pictures Distribué par : CJ Entertainment Titre original : Joeun Chingudeul / 좋은 친구들 Notre note : ★★★★☆
“Confession” est un thriller dramatique sud-coréen datant de 2014, écrit et réalisé par Lee Do-yun, qui signe là son premier long-métrage. Les acteurs principaux sont Ji Sung, qu’on a pu voir dans “Feng Shui” (2018), Sung Hyuk, qu’on a pu voir dans “Operation Chromite” (2016), Ju Ji-hoon, qu’on a pu voir dans “Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds” (2017), Lee Kwang-soo, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Accidental Detective 2: In Action” (2018), Lee Hwi-hyang, qu’on a pu voir dans “In My End Is My Beginning” (2013), et Choi Byung-mo, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Merciless” (2017).

LGBTQ+ Royals from United Silla~Joseon
United Silla
King Hyegong (759~780)
According to the Unofficial History of the Three Kingdoms, there is record of Silla’s 36th King Hyegong saying that he “was born as a daughter to King Gyeongdeok, but was made against his will into a son.” Gyeongdeok only had daughters before Hyegong, and was extremely frustrated at not having a son. Contacting a shaman by the name of Pyohun, he begged divination on whether he could have a son. Pyohun divined, “If you bear a son, the nation will fall. It’s better for you to have daughters,” to which Gyeongdeok replied: “I don’t care if the nation falls - if only I could have a son.”
The Compendium of Eastern History, written by 18th century scholar An Jeong Bok, records that Hyegong often liked to dress in women’s clothes. An comments, “They say that the King was a woman who became a man, and always dressed in women’s clothes when he was young. How laughable!” Other historians remark that he was a man by appearance but a woman by nature. His femininity prompted all-out revolt from Kim Ji Jeong and other noblemen of the time, and he was murdered in April 780 as a result, at the age of 22. Kim Yangsang was installed to the Throne, becoming Silla’s 37th King Seondeok.

A History of Goryeo reports that Gongmin was romantically and sexually involved with Attendant Kim, along with other Jajewi including Kwon Jin, Han An, No Seon, Hong Gwan and Hong Ryun. Hong Ryun is infamous for impregnating Gongmin’s Consort Ik in 1374 while Gongmin was drunk. Fearful of the consequences, he partnered with Choi Man Saeng to assassinate Gongmin. Choi Man Saeng and the entire Jajewi were beheaded two days after Gongmin’s murder.

Concubine Sun of the Haeum Bong Clan/Bong Sun Bin
Bong Sun Bin was Crown Princess to Lee Hyang (future King Munjong) from 1429 to 1436, succeeding Kim Hwi Bin, who was deposed for witchcraft. Her quick-tempered personality was in contrast to Hyang’s quieter one, and so they grew apart. Sejong selected three concubines for the Crown Prince as a countermeasure, including Kim Seung Hwi, who would become Crown Princess after Lady Sun Bin was deposed.
Kim Seung Hwi became pregnant in 1436, prompting Bong Sun Bin to fake a pregnancy by burying funeral clothes and reporting them as a miscarriage. She was also reported to peek at random men from the servants’ bathroom and often took to alcoholism. King Sejong scolded the Crown Princess for her jealousy, and further reprimanded the Crown Prince for impregnating Lady Kim, a concubine, before his legal wife.
It was then revealed that the Crown Princess slept with court maids by the name of Sossang and Danji, often making them dress in men’s clothes. Upon being questioned by the Crown Prince, she argued that it was because she loved him, while he didn’t love her. Sejong found out through rumors among the court ladies, reportedly flogging the one who informed him 70 times. He was especially angry that the Crown Princess had slept with two members of the slave class.
Crown Princess Bong was deposed, exiled and demoted to a commoner in October 26th of the same year, on grounds of previous incidents including illegally sending food and the Crown Prince’s clothes to her natal residence and receiving visits from her uncle without the Crown Prince’s knowledge. The succeeding Kim Seung Hwi (now Kim Ui Bin) gave birth in December.
