SNOW WAR- PART II.

-Back in Acacia Street-

The group ran as fast as they've ever run, faster than any mile runs at Phys. Ed at school, faster than any creepy troll they've encountered. When they reached their street, they went right to Jim's house. Jim closed the door shut, locked it well, and closed the blinds on the windows.

"TH-THAT.. was.. INTENSE!" He panted, pointing outside, trying to catch his breath. He sat down on the stool by the kitchen counter.

"That was EXHAUSTING!" Libby complained, rubbing her sore calves from all the running.

"THEY HATE US, THEY KNOCKED US DOWN!"

"What were you thinking Libby?? 'Penelope Mumbleson?' Who the heck even HAS that LAST NAME?!" Toby exclaimed.

"I thought it would be credible enough, but.. Well, it backfired.."

"Yeah, no kidding," Toby remarked sarcastically, slumping down on the couch.

"Guys-Guys! All of that doesn't matter. What matters is that we got out of there alive, and we didn't get annihilated out there," Saraline steps up.

"Yeah, exactly, we're all here together, no one got hurt," Jim agreed.

Toby starts "Yeah, and so what if we caused another war between our streets- OH NO! WE CAUSED ANOTHER WAR BETWEEN OUR STREETS!"

"SHHHHHH! QUIET!" The group shushes Toby.

"But.. he's right though.. W-What if.."

"No, that's impossible, we all agreed a long time ago that it wouldn't happen. We all signed on the snow," Jim said, trying to calm everyone down.

"Yeah.. He's right.. Totally right," Libby nods. They exchange looks and go over to the living room window, moving the curtain aside, just enough for them to get a glimpse of their street. And it was like they feared.

Many people from Acacia Street started congregating outside, murmuring starting to form. They quickly went back out and it was true. Apparently, as they stepped out, Toby overheard Shelly Brewer, one of the girls from their street, say that she heard from a source that a fight had broken between some group from Acacia and Cirrus. The news had soon spread like wildfire there, that the Cirrus Street Rebels had struck. When they saw Libby and the four, they didn't look too amused to see them.

"SERIOUSLY?!" Shelly shouts over her oversized pink earmuffs.

"Nice job..!" Another one remarked, followed by sarcastic clapping.

"Way to start our winter.. I bet LAKE here is the one who started all of this.." Another neighbor starts pointing the blame at Jim.

"YEAH! Trying to SABOTAGE our PEACE!" Gwen Dolan hollered angrily, holding up her snow shovel in protest, followed by mixed voices shouting and hollering at the group enraged.

"I KNEW they were all nothing but TROUBLE!" More concerned clamoring from everyone on the street followed.

"GUYS! GUYS! GUYS! HEY! JIM'S NOT AT FAULT FOR THIS, OKAY!?" Libby spoke up to the People.

"YEAH! HE WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO STARTED THAT!" Toby shouts, thinking he'd sound cool and intimidating, but.. he did NOT know what HE just SAID.

"Tobes!" Jim turns to him, unamused, pulling his arm.

"Bra-VO!" A heckler booed.

"HEY! WE DIDN'T SAY YOU COULD HECKLE, DID WE?" Saraline gives them a taste of their own medicine.

"HEY! YOU ALL MIGHT AS WELL BE INSIDE- SAVE YOURSELVES THE EMBARRASSMENT!" Derek Miller jeered hastily. The Acacia crew start howling with laughter at it, poking fun at them.

That did it.

Jim went up shouted the loudest, probably the loudest that anyone's ever heard him shout, but he did it. He went, "WHY DON'T YOU TAKE A SEAT, DEREK." Straight up snapped him in half, sending a shiver of silence from everyone, leaving defenseless Derek all quiet, slowly taking a seat on a mound of snow.

Claire joins in on the discussion "ANYways! We know you're all mad at us, but it's not our FAULT! This snow has burdened us with trials and tribulations, okay? I thought snow was supposed to bring joy, fun, family together- At least that's what it USED TO BE.. But nowadays here.. snow means envy and bitterness.. We both used to be close.. Acacia and Cirrus.. What happened? Where did all that fun go?"

That made everyone really think. Everything paused as they all look at each other, some light agreeing murmuring, and nodding. Claire's friends nod in agreement.

"I miss those old scavenger hunts at the Wilsons' House.." Shelly said solemnly, a tear forming in her eye.

"Yeah.. And I miss havin' my best friend around.. Miss the good ol' days Brandy.." A tween boy holds on to a little dark green soldier figurine as he spoke, looking at the toy with grief.

Mixed responses were shared out of people recalling the good past memories that they made with the Cirrus Street people.

"People really did connect, huh?" Libby said to her group.

"Yeah, but I didn't think there'd be so much actually," Jim says. As that sweet moment grew, it all came to an end when someone came to the street in a hurry. It took a while to recognize them, until the boy with the soldier toy shouted out, "BRANDY?"

"'Brandy?'"They all asked, looking at each other.

"LUCAS! OH MY- GUYS.. GUYS! I.. I CAME TO WARN YOU ALL..!" He pants as he ran, where Brandy finally got to the center where everyone could see him.

"Wait, isn't he from the other street?" Derek blurts out, followed by murmuring from the others.

"Yeah. I am.. But I'm not on their side.. I came to warn you guys.."

"YEAH. We heard THAT STORY before.." Gwen Dolan yawns.

"I'm serious!" Everyone starts to leave, everyone but Jim and the four.

Finally, Brandy snapped. "DO YOU GUYS WANNA BE AMBUSHED BY YELLOW SNOW?" He asks.

Dead silence from the crowd, and they come back to where they were in a flash.

"I thought so," He crossed his arms.

"Okay- Go on."

"Alright, here goes.." Brandy tells everyone that the Cirrus Rebels were planning something diabolical. He said that they were making a TON of snowballs back there and they were using the Lopez' backyard because that's where the most snow accumulates there. And the Lopez family have a Rottweiler named Tonka, so they're sure to be using yellow snow and who-knows-what-else.

The Cirrus people were to form a huge army, march right to the neighborhood and plot an ambush attack, where they'd attack from all sides, all angles, to claim their 'property' back.

"Oh my God.." Someone murmured, then someone else murmured, and a wave of worried chatter erupted, but Libby put an end to it instantly. That got everyone scared to the bone, just dead silence again, but with a more eery vibe to it. Everyone was pretty mad about what they were planning, but they were glad Brandy gave us the heads-up. They told him that from now on, he could sled on their side ANY time.

"ALL RIGHT GUYS. We gotta PREPARE HERE!" Those invaders are going to come and strike us, what's the plan?"

*Libby's POV*

The time is ticking, not much time to go, so everyone was very short on ideas because we'd never engaged in a battle this huge before.

"..Well for one- we'll need to form a clan," I started.

"Yeah! And make a team flag that represents each of us!" Saraline chimed in.

"Mhm.. A flag that'll intimidate and bring shivers to our enemies!" Jim finished.

"Well- I LIKE IT!" Derek exclaims, all of us whoop and celebrate.

We quickly voted on what we should go for our design and the most votes were a bloody warrior's sword with a sharp icicle behind it, so we went with that.

My friends and I ran back to Jim's house and found an old pillowcase in the laundry room, and got some markers out of the junk drawer in the kitchen. We started by trying to come up with a NAME for our clan.

"What's our name gonna be, Clan?" Jim asks.

"OOH! How about GRYFFINDOR?!" Toby suggests.

"Uhhh.. Cool, but if we're doin' this, we gotta be original," Saraline said.

"Ugh, fiiineee." He pouted.

"Ooh! How about.. Hmm.."

"How.. about.. Winterspear?" I suggest.

"Oh, yeah!!"

"Love it!"

"PERFECT!"

"AWESOMESAUCE!"

"Mhm! Winterspear, the Clan of Glory.. Uh..B-Bringing home glory with our spears of uhh.. might glory!!" I stammer.

"..You just ruined it, Libby.." Toby shakes his head.

"But I still LOVE IT!" He exhilarated with joy, jumping up and down.

We all went back outside with our new flag.

"What's the game plan?" Someone asks.

"Hmm.. The only way to keep the Cirrus Street people from coming back down the hill is to build a wall to block their path." Claire said.

"MHM! And we're not gonna need some puny wall they could just push over, either. We need something that is SOLID and STURDY."

"I agree, Tobes- But we need to make it FAST because those guys are already marching down the hills with their sleds."

"LET'S GET TO WORK PEOPLE!" Valeria announced. So we got recycling bins from some nearby houses and started BUILDING.

We ended up with a DOUBLE wall, so if anyone broke through the first layer, they'd still have to deal with the SECOND one. And we stockpiled a TON of snowballs.

I sent Lorraine up to our house to fill some thermoses with hot chocolate since it would be freezing combat. We all suited up, got out the big winter coats and the snow boots, our most bundled scarves, and gloves/earmuffs. I got a huge white puffy winter coat, white fur winter cap, winter pants, white snow boots, WHITE EVERYTHING- I figure it would make it easier for me to blend in with the snow since we're dealing with war here!

The homeschooled kids went out and each collected sharp pointy icicles to stick into our wall, and some of the duplex people threw together some snowmen to make it look like there were more of us than there actually WERE.

And when the Cirrus Street kids came, we were READY for them.

Lorraine comes out of my house, running back to us, wearing a puffy snow jacket and all the snow gear.

"Okay, now we got Lorraine," I say, patting her back, giving us the thermoses of hot chocolate. Valeria and Chantelle trail behind her.

"Here ya go, Libby!"

"Thanks!"

"Chantelle has excellent sight and Valeria has a snowball launcher," I explained to the team, where they nod.

"All right- NOW, WHO'S GOT THEIR BATTLE SPIRIT?!" I shout at the masses.

"OOH! ME MEE! I GOT MY BATTLE SPIRIT!" Lorraine shouts, waving her arms around like a fan, Everyone largely screamed out in glory.

"Aw, that's nice! SEE? Even Lorraine HAS-" But before Jim could finish, Lorraine took a snowball and hurled right at him which impacted him so much he was knocked straight onto the snow.

Everyone quickly rushes over to him, checking on him, helping him up. He stumbles his balance shifting, trying to stay still. It was difficult getting him up since he was wearing one of those blue puffy penguin snow jackets.

"Th-The kid.. has an arm..!" He trembles out as Toby holds him straight by the arm, so he wouldn't topple down. They all look at Lorraine with wonder, which the little girl smiles confidently.

"I'm on the softball team! Hee!" Lorraine said eagerly, arms folded behind her back, standing out tall.

"Yeahhh.. we're gonna win for sure," Derek whispers to Jim, which he nods in agreement.

"NOW- CAN I GET A 'HOORAH'?!" I shout, standing up tall on Jim's porch step, raising my fist up high.

"HOORAH!" The street roared with pride, raising their fists up with me.

"I SAID, 'CAN I GET A HOORAH?!'?"

"H O O R A H ! H O O R A H ! H O O R A H ! H O O R A H !"

After out cheering, we got to battle mode, when the Cirrus street people saw our WALL, I don't think they knew what to DO. And when they got CLOSER, we hit them with everything we had. Those guys didn't stand a CHANCE. We sent them running back up the hill, and we celebrated our victory.

"VICTORY!" Jim yells and points to the scampering Cirrus Street kids, as we each high-fived each other.

"THEY'RE DOWN!" Claire exclaims, applauding in delight.

"YEAH! WOO!" Saraline jumps up.

But we celebrated too SOON. Because ten minutes later, the Cirrus Street Rebels were BACK, and this time they were armed to the BONE.

Most of them were wearing sports gear, many with hockey masks and sports helmets to protect themselves from our snowballs.

"AAAAaaaHHH!" We screamed, instinctively recoiling and ducking down on our wall, when one of them threw a HOCKEY STICK at us, impaling one of our snowmen decoy's eyes.

"What THE-" Claire gasped, looking at the raging fury of the Cirrus fellows. But still, we were the ones with the wall, and we had the higher ground. So we unleashed another round of snowballs, which we held off for a while, but those guys had some surprises up their sleeves. They hit us with a round of sloppy choppy snowballs which we were totally unprepared for.

But we'd have to deal with those LATER because now we had a new problem. It turned out the wet slimy snowballs were just a distraction to draw our attention away from the nextwave of attack, which was coming at us swiftly.

"STAIRS- 12 O'CLOCK!" Toby points out, watching with the binoculars from a safe distance.

"DON'T LET THEM CLIMB UP!" Jim hollers, grabbing a bunch of snowballs.

"GOTCHA!" Valeria says, grabbing the snowball launcher going crazy at 'em. We hit the ones carrying ladders with snowballs, but before we knew it, they'd planted their ladders at the base of the wall and had started climbing their way UP it. But Shelly, Chantelle, and a group of our team brought out a bucket of slush from the snowballs that the Cirrus street people snuck.

We didn't have a second to celebrate, though, because the Cirrus Street Rebels were already launching their next attack.

"Uhh, Guys?" Saraline points to a marching group of people heading our way.

"Oh, DEAR GOD NO-" Jim gasped, eyes widening.

"Uh-oh, this is gonna get rough," Toby gulped.

"Yep," I said quietly.

Half the school football team lives at the top of the hill, and they attempted to take down the wall with brute FORCE. But because of the roughness of the wall, they wore themselves out in a breeze.

But eventually, it was getting tiring, so some of the Cirrus street people started packing up, like nothing. Then they started eating snacks and sandwiches, it looked like a tuna sandwich, I am getting hungry too. I didn't realize how late it got, but I had to stick with my team.

After a while, we realized what they were trying to do here. I've been on enough Trollhunting missions with Jim and the team, and I saw this exact scenario happen multiple times now. Their strategy was to wait us out until we CRACKED, and then take our wall without a fight.

In fact, someone on our side was the first one on our side to break. Melvin Burke hadn't even had anything to eat yet, so the sight of all those sandwiches being eaten, all the crusts lying on the ground made him CRAZY. He climbed over the wall and ran down the hill, and that was the last any of us saw of him. But the rest of us nonhill kids kept it together. Three HOURS went by, but the Cirrus people weren't budging.

A lot of the younger kids were tired and hungry and wanted to go home. And I couldn't blame them, because by now, it was DINNERTIME and all of us were starving.

We agreed we couldn't just sit there and wait for the attack, so we started working on a PLAN. Half of us would sneak up the hill and launch a surprise attack on the kids making snowballs in the Lopez' yard. The OTHER half would stay back to protect the fort. We sketched the plan into the snow with a stick to make sure we were all on the same page.

Jim, Claire, Saraline, Toby, and I were part of the sneak attack team since we wanted in on the action. Our group loaded up a few sleds with all the snowballs we had left, and we slipped over the back wall and between some houses.

When we got to the Lopez' backyard, we stopped to just scope out the scene, see what's happening, which would be easy since by now it was very dark and they couldn't see us. Sure enough, there was a big group of kids making snowballs out front behind a rock wall. When Lorraine gave the signal, we all charged at them, launching our attack.

"FOR WINTERSPEAR!" I roar.

"FOR THE CLAN OF GLORY!" My friends shouted, charging.

"GLORY!" Our allies cried back, all of them trailing with us.

"AYEYEYEYEYEYEYEYEEE!" Chantelle yells as she's hurling snowballs, she wants victory and glory too.

"SURRENDER, CIRRUS STREET PUNKS!" Jim demands.

But the other guys didn't even FLINCH when we hit them. And as we got closer, we realized it was all just a TRICK. The hill kids had copied us and created DECOYS to split us up, which meant we'd been double-crossed by them. We rushed back to the wall, but by then it was already too LATE.

The wall was in RUINS, and we were out of ammunition. It looked really bad for us Acacia kids, but then we saw that they had a large flag that was proudly waving in the wind where OUR WALL used to stand. Oh yeah, they copied us on the clan thing, their flag had a sigil of a skull and a spear going through it.

In the middle of all this, ANOTHER group came down from the TOP of the hill. It was the TULLY STREET people, who must've gotten out and come to sled and hang around on our street. And once THEY got into the mix, it was just a total FREE-FOR-ALL.

But however, everyone stopped when they heard the rumbling sound of the snowplow. Which were three-quarters of the way up the street, mowing through everything in its path. And once the plow left our street, it was QUIET, like actually quiet, the quietest quiet ever. The crazy thing is, now that the street was plowed, there wasn't really anything left to fight over, and everyone picked themselves up and started TALKING with one another. Both streets, both sides of the street conversing, like nothing had happened.

Before, long we were taking everything up and heading home, but someone stopped us.

"Wait, guys." It was the leader of Cirrus Street.

"Look-We've been real jerks.. This has gone on for so long.. Let's all just start over." he said with a warm grin.

We hesitated, looked at each other, and went for it.

"Okay, we accept." We all acknowledged. We crossed our flags, symbolizing the end of the feud and a long-fought war.

After the party left, we went back to Jim's house for some more hot chocolate and a roaring fire at the fireplace.

"Did we just end a lifelong feud between this street and that?" Jim asks, blowing on his cup of chocolate before sipping.

"I think we did, Jimbo." Toby replied.

"Ah, but I'm not gonna complain about why we were fighting in the FIRST place.. I'm just glad we made it through this heinous war without getting ourselves KILLED." Saraline said, putting on some marshmallows on her hot chocolate.

"Agreed." Claire said.

"'Huzzah' for not getting ourselves killed in the cold!" I started the cheer.

"..And for ending a lifelong feud!" Toby adds in.

"HUZZAH!" We all clinked our mugs together in celebration and each took a sip.

"OOH! HOT!"

"Too HOT!"

"Ouch! Ouch!" We wince and put our mugs down from the burning beverage, then we just laugh it off, just glad and happy that this whole mess is FINALLY over. And this story too, because it went on forever and ever and ever, whew!

I'm a young teenager in middle school who really, really, really wants to be considered smart like my friends. I've already found ways to study and get better grades but I want to be smart in other areas too. I'm very new to greek mythology & trying to learn about it now, I'm trying to expand my vocabulary, and I'm trying to find new topics to be knowledgeable in. Do you have any suggestions for things I could learn, activities I could do, or ways to expand my vocabulary so I can achieve this?

Hello friend!

It's nice that you're so eager to learn new things, but make sure not to compare yourself to other people to such an extreme! Some competition cna be healthy, but don't put yourself down by comparing yourself to others all the time.

However, I do have some tips for you on some of these points :)

Read. I will never not recommend reading. Read whatever you can get your hands on, read whatever looks interesting. You'll develop your vocabulary, and it's generally good for you (look up the benefits of reading if you don't believe me). There are loads of free eBooks online, libraries could open again soon, and you can find audio books on Adible or Libby. Read.

I would recommend having some kind of encyclopedia or dictionary on general but obscure knowledge where you can look things up. I have a Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and have genuinely sat there and read it cover to cover. You don't have to do that, but you can always looks things up. Encyclopedias are great because a lot of them link you to other areas of information, which can lead you down a research rabbit hole.

Research things that you enjoy. Don't go by what's traditionally deemed 'high brow', because that's a really narrow field confined by race, class, gender, sexuality, and religion, at least here in Britain. Research things you find interesting, and I promise the information will stick way better.

I would really recommend learning another language, even if it's just a few words or phrases. Personally I know I'm really privileged in this because I was raised trilingual but honestly, it has so many benefits to be able to communicate in different ways. Learn sign language or Latin or Spanish or Mandarin, I really don't care. Just try to learn a language for at least a few months.

The internet is a really valuable resource. I'm guilty of falling down a never-ending spiral of under 1 minute videos and filling my head with vine references too, but there are so many incredibly detailed and specific videos on any topic. If you come across a concept you find interesting, look up a YouTube video on it, try to find a Blog post, read the Wikipedia site. You never know what interesting things you might find.

If you're interested in Greek Mythology, I have some recommendations for you. First, Percy Jackson. Yes, it's basic. But it's also a really good starting point for becoming familiarised with a lot of the deities and mythology. I'm sure that Rick Riordan did two or so books where Percy narrates the Greek myths, and those were my favourites when I was probably around your age, so I'd definitely give them a go. Next: Mythos, Heroes, and Troy by Stephen Fry. I love Stephen Fry with all my heart and these books were incredible. I would really recommend getting the audio books because he narrates them and they just come alive. He could read the phone book and it would be interesting.

Learning history is so important. We need to know where we come from, and need to be able to understand where other people come from and their histories too. Remember when I told you to read? Read historical books. There's no better way to learn about people than to get into their heads and experience things from their perspective through reading from their points of view. Read classics as well, because they're contemporary and will teach you about how people lived. I wouldn't worry about learning dates and names (although you can show off with those), but I would recommend knowing about how people lived their lives. I have an inventory of useless fashion history and miscellaneous historical facts littered around my head like mothballs which make me sound smart when really I'm just vomiting up any information I have linked to a topic brought up in conversation.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Established in 1949, the national movement aims to draw attention to the stigma faced by millions of Americans living with mental illness and their fight for care.

This year’s movement is poised to have even greater reach than before, thanks to a little help from a surprise source – the craft beer industry! Beer fans on Tavour can expect to see a range of beers on the app during the month of May, all with the same name. The intention is to send a powerful message about the concealed nature of mental illness: Things We Don’t Say.

In conjunction with Malteurop Malting Co., Hollingbery & Son Hops, and international awareness group Hope For The Day, Wisconsin’s Eagle Park Brewing created the special IPA recipe. Then, they posted it online, along with an open invitation for other brewers to join in.

“The cause is something that’s near and dear to all of us. It’s been a tough year on everyone,” says Eagle Park Co-Owner Jake Schinker.

While a portion of the proceeds is going to Hope For The Day’s suicide prevention and mental health education programming, Schinker says that isn’t the main goal, due to the quiet nature of mental health struggles.

“From the beginning, we all decided that the message is more important than raising funds,” he says.

In addition to promoting mental illness discussion via the beer name, Eagle Park includes contact information for seven different mental health resources on their labels for Things We Don’t Say. Participating brewers can use this template or customize their own.

While many of the breweries involved are keeping their batches limited and close to home, Tavour is working with 11 of them to bring the beers into the public’s hands nationwide. The online retailer is already known for connecting craft fans to hard-to-find beers from over 600 breweries.

Eagle Park is just one of the breweries sharing a portion of their Things We Don’t Say IPA through Tavour. They’re joined by good company, many of them neighboring Midwest breweries that don’t normally send beers outside of the region:

Representing Illinois is Energy City Brewing, Maplewood Brewery, Mikerphone Brewing, Old Irving Brewing, and Riverlands Brewing. Also coming from the Midwest is Nebraska’s Zipline Brewing, and Wisconsin’s The Brewing Projekt Meanwhile, Divine Barrel Brewing stepped forward from North Carolina, as did Source Brewing from New Jersey.

While the prospect of craft breweries getting involved in the mental health discussion may leave some scratching their heads, others feel the industry’s strong community aspect makes it an ideal platform for spreading awareness.

“I truly believe the craft beer industry is one of the best industries in the world, not just for the love of beer, but for the community that surrounds it,” says Libby Borchert, Tavour’s Business Development Manager.

“We fully support and love when breweries utilize their skills and platform to bring important subjects like mental health and wellness to light, and we wanted to do our part to amplify the cause!”

For Greg Taylor of Source Brewing, the decision to get involved was a meaningful way of recognizing that “many, if not most, of us are fighting some sort of internal battle... Connecting to another human being and having a meaningful conversation, with or without a beer in hand, can be extremely healthy and beneficial.”

As for his brewery’s rendition of Things We Don’t Say, Taylor is optimistic about its impact. “We hope that the can label art and messaging behind this campaign will spark a conversation and help to normalize everyday discussions around mental health,” he says. “Help people understand that it's okay to not be okay and ask for help. “

Tavour plans to release the beers in multiple variety packs during May to showcase the assortment of different breweries and the skill they each put into the beer. Tasters are encouraged to share photos of their collections via social media to help get the word out about Things We Don’t Say.

In the meantime, Schinker wants other brewers to know they can still hop on board the Things We Don’t Say effort.

“By no means is this project going away anytime soon,” he says. “Just because May is Mental Health Month doesn’t mean we can’t keep working to spread awareness.”

A new way to analyse old things

Geological and archaeological records offer important insights into what seems to be an increasingly uncertain future.

The better we understand what conditions Earth has already experienced, the better we can predict (and potentially prevent) future threats.

But to do this effectively, we need an accurate way to date what happened in the past.

Our research, published in the journal Radiocarbon, offers a way to do just that, through an updated method of calibrating the radiocarbon timescale.

An amazing tool for perusing the past

Radiocarbon dating has revolutionised our understanding of the past. It is nearly 80 years since Nobel Prize-winning US chemist Willard Libby first suggested minute amounts of a radioactive form of carbon are created in the upper atmosphere.

Libby correctly argued this newly formed radiocarbon (or C-14) rapidly converts to carbon dioxide, is taken up by plants during photosynthesis, and from there travels up through the food chain.

When organisms interact with their environment while alive, they have the same proportion of C-14 as their environment. Once they die they stop taking in new carbon.

Their level of C-14 then halves every 5,730 years due to radioactive decay. An organism that died yesterday will still have a high level of C-14, whereas one that died tens of thousands of years ago will not.

By measuring the level of C-14 in a specimen, we can deduce how long ago that organism died. Currently, with this method, we can date remains up to 60,000 years old.

If the level of C-14 in the atmosphere had always been constant, radiocarbon dating would be straightforward. But it hasn’t.

Changes in the carbon cycle, impinging cosmic radiation, the use of fossil fuels and 20th century nuclear testing have all caused large variations over time. Thus, all radiocarbon dates need to be adjusted (or calibrated) to be turned into accurate calendar ages.

Without this adjustment, dates could be out by up to 10-15%. This week we report a seven-year international effort to recalculate three radiocarbon calibration curves:

IntCal20 (“20” to signify this year) for objects from the northern hemisphere

SHCal20 for samples from the ocean-dominated southern hemisphere

Marine20 for samples from the world’s oceans.

We constructed these updated curves by measuring a plethora of materials that record past radiocarbon levels, but which can also be dated by other methods.

Included in the archives are tree rings from ancient logs preserved in wetlands, cave stalagmites, corals from the continental shelf and sediments drilled from lake and ocean beds.

In total, the new curves are based on almost 15,000 radiocarbon measurements taken from objects up to 60,000 years old.

Advances in radiocarbon measurement using accelerator mass spectrometry mean the updated curves can use very small samples, such as single tree rings from just one year’s growth.

Reassessing old beliefs

The new radiocarbon calibration curves provide previously impossible precision and detail. As a result, they greatly improve our understanding of how Earth has evolved and how these changes impacted its inhabitants.

One example is the rate of environmental change at the end of the most recent ice age. As the world started to warm some 18,000 years ago, vast ice sheets covering Antarctica, North America (including Greenland) and Europe melted – returning huge volumes of fresh water to the oceans.

But the sea level didn’t rise at a consistent rate like the global temperature. Sometimes it was gradual and other times extremely rapid.

A prime location to detect past sea levels is the Sunda Shelf, a large platform of land that was once part of continental Southeast Asia.

One study published in 2000 showed mangrove plant remains found on the seabed recorded a catastrophic 16-metre sea level rise over several hundred years (about half a metre each decade). This event, known as Meltwater Pulse-1A, flooded the Sunda Shelf.

Our latest work has modified this story considerably. The new calibration curves reveal this extreme phase of sea level rise actually began 14,640 years ago and lasted just 160 years.

This equates to a staggering one-metre rise each decade – a sobering lesson for the future, considering the current much lower projected changes for the end of this century.

An extra half a millennium of art

Going further back in time, we also looked at some of the world’s oldest cave art in France’s Chauvet Cave, first discovered in 1994.

This cave contains hundreds of beautifully preserved paintings. They depict a European menagerie with long-extinct mammoths, cave lions and woolly rhinoceroses, captured in real-life scenes that provide a window into a lost world.

With the new IntCal20 curve, our best estimate for the creation of the oldest radiocarbon-dated painting in the cave is now 36,500 years ago. This is almost 450 years older than previously thought.

These are just two of many more examples of the far-reaching impact our latest work will have.

As the new calibration curves are used to re-analyse ages of a host of archaeological and geological records, we can expect major shifts in our understanding of the planet’s past – and hopefully, a better forecast into its future.

We Asked 10 Brewers: What’s the Most Ridiculous Smoothie IPA You’ve Had?

Parallels are often drawn between craft beer and music. The saying goes that brewery sellouts are much like your favorite indie band signing to a mainstream record label. Of course, there are exceptions, and what stands out for some is heavy metal and IPA. From stoner metal to technical black metal, and from session IPA to black IPA, the parallel genres contain seemingly innumerable subgenres and innovations.

One of the more, uh, divisive subcategories of IPA is the much-critiqued smoothie IPA, a style that many beer drinkers (this author included) struggle to recognize as an IPA. With incredibly high grams per liter of fruit, and outrageous levels of lactose, it’s a substyle that resembles little of its parent style. Indeed, many of the brewers contacted for this piece simply said they’d so far successfully avoided drinking a smoothie iPA. Regardless, few can deny its popularity — and many agree it is delicious, if a little ridiculous.

So, what are the most ridiculous smoothie IPAs professional brewers are drinking? We asked brewers around the world to chime in on which sweet, dessert-like smoothie IPAs take the cake.

“North Brew Co. Golden Milk Turmeric and Apricot sour with coconut. I’ve taken turmeric every day for a long time for its numerous health benefits and was intrigued to see how such a strong flavor could work in a beer. The beer poured a vibrant orange with a pillowy-white head. On first sip, the immediate flavor was apricot and sweet clementine. The turmeric is there in spades but somehow not overpowering, and works well with the sorbet-sourness. The coconut was present somewhere in the background, although, probably not a bad thing as it would stick out like a sore thumb if too prominent. I wasn’t sure how the mix of ingredients would blend together, but they did, and it made for a super-refreshing fruity sour that contributed to my overall health and supple joints!” — Maddie Culling, Shift Lead Brewer, Northern Monk Brew Co., Leeds, U.K.

“We’ve brewed our fair share of milkshake IPAs (well, four to be exact, so maybe fair share is a stretch), but we’ve always strived to make sure that the liquid has a semblance to beer over a milkshake. The most ridiculous one I’ve ever sampled was from a brewery who poured next to us at a festival — a mixed berry/vanilla milkshake IPA that had literal chunks when poured into my glass. I had to use the bathroom sink to rinse out the glass thoroughly afterwards because them fruit particles like to cling!” — Libby Crider, Owner & General Manager, 2nd Shift Brewing, St Louis

“I have never knowingly drank a smoothie IPA, apart from one which was some kind of banana Daiquiri number from a Swedish brewery that will remain nameless. I love me a Piña Colada but this was more aroma of baby shite and a texture like liquified blancmange. Almost as bad as the Negroni Saison from one of my favorite London breweries [served] at Moeder Lambic, of all places, in 2014… Ho hum. Pass the Pils, please.” — Olly Plimsoll Bartlett, Sales Manager, Stockholm Brewing Co., Stockholm, Sweden

“At a previous job, we brewed a beer with a famous Swedish brewery known for their bold graphic design, and ever-bold flavor combinations. The beer was to be the main beer for the second Beavertown Extravaganza, and as such had to live up to the hype of the previous beer for the festival, Heavy Lord, a 15 percent bourbon-barrel- aged imperial stout brewed with 3 Floyds from Munster, Indiana. The brewery we decided to pair up with for the second year was none other than Omnipollo and the beer was Mango Milk Power Breakfast IIPA. I still remember the look of disgust and fear on our faces when we heard we were going to be using whey protein isolate (which Omnipollo specified should be the highest grade possible) in a beer. I was even more shocked when Cosmo, our lead brewer at the time, was allowed to spend almost a grand on a pointless adjunct that would probably have coagulated in the kettle anyway and provided very little flavor or texture, or muscle-bulking benefits. The beer itself was actually really difficult to build, and I say ‘build’ because it was less about brewing and more about the technicalities of putting these flavors of hops, mango, coconut, lactose, vanilla and… protein isolate together in a harmonious and tasty way. The event came around, and of course Omnipollo had set up the beer to be poured from their soft serve dispense at their stall… I saw one poured into a coconut shell, and so I tasted it and thought, ‘yeah, that’s pretty good for what it is.’ I was proud that we had made a balanced, well-made Mango, Coconut, Vanilla, Lactose, Protein Shake Smoothie Imperial IPA… Now, where is my Pilsner?” — Jonathan Hamilton, Brewer, Newbarns Brewery, Edinburgh, Scotland

“The most ridiculous smoothie/milkshake IPA I’ve ever had was probably a sour black double IPA hopped with Citra and El Dorado and had wheat, malted oats, lactose, mandarin orange purée, tangerine purée, dark chocolate, vanilla beans, pink sea salt, and orange peel. When I drank it, it was a bit of a sensory overload: so many different flavors going across my palate as I drank; it was interesting but I don’t think I would go so far as to call it enjoyable. I don’t purchase them, but a friend of mine loves the style, and she keeps giving me different examples to try. Personally, I don’t really like the style; for one thing I don’t really like overly sweet beer (or sweet wine, or any other sweet beverage generally) and this style of IPA is aggressively sweet. The other reason why I don’t like smoothie/milkshake IPA is that I feel that the style is just a gimmick designed to garner attention in a crowded marketplace. It all screams, ‘Look at me! I’m an IPA that tastes like s’mores!’ or, ‘Look at me! I’m an IPA that tastes like strawberry pancakes!’ or, “Look at me! I’m an IPA with as much lactose as a glass of milk!’ And yes, all three of these examples are real. At the end of the day, I think that the people that like this style enjoy it because they have an affinity towards sweet, sugary things.” — Mark Ryan, Head Brewer, Jersey Girl Brewing Company, Hackettstown, N.J.

“I’m going to have to say Definitive Vanilla Dome with Mango. It’s not ridiculous in its absurdity, but in the way the flavors work together. The vanilla accentuated the sweetness while the acidity of the mango kept it from being cloying. It is a well-put-together beer.” — Peter Heggeman, Brewmaster, Bath Brewing Company, Bath, Maine

“Tired Hands, a name on most ‘hype bois’ lists of breweries to try, make absolutely stonking beer and along with Omnipollo helped spearhead and fetishize the milkshake/smoothie IPA. Their double vanilla double IPA is probably one of the most intense (read: ridiculous) IPAs I’ve had and yeah, it was decadent, but it was also a huge miss for me. Their house [yeast] strain and hefty use of oats brings heaps of vanilla for me in their beers anyway, but the sheer eye-watering amount of vanilla in that IPA was too much when paired with Citra, Mosaic, lactose (f*ck lactose!) and rumored apple in the mash for pectin haze. The hop profile was great (when is Citra and Mosaic not) but when the screaming sweetness from the lactose and vanilla washes in it’s overpowering, and detracted from the balance of the beer. The beer is perfect for a bottle share where a whole can is too much but a quarter of a can is more than enough. This sort of innovation ‘for innovation’s sake’ means that you’ll always have to one-up yourself and your competition when the haze bros come calling.” — Jack Delaney, Assistant Head Brewer, Alefarm Brewing, Greve, Denmark

“The most ridiculous ‘smoothie IPA’ I have ever drank would probably be something from Decadent Ales out of Mamaroneck, N.Y. Their IPAs are not packaged with as much fruit purée as the popular sour smoothie beers, but they are still loaded with tons of sweet and tangy fruit flavor. The Orange Cream Pop IPA packs so much flavor and a thick mouthfeel into one can, it’s a great summer replacement for an actual Creamsicle. Tons of creamy sweetness up front from additions of sugars and vanilla beans, followed up with a surprising kick of orange that lingers on the tongue. Plus, it clocks in at a steady 6 percent ABV, so don’t be afraid to enjoy more than one. I’ve had quite a few ‘smoothie’ and ‘milkshake’ IPAs, but this one takes the cake for most well balanced while still being able to detect the hops. As for even more ridiculous, their Double Toasted Marshmallow IPA is basically a can of sugary-sweet alcohol. While it is fairly tasty, at 9.5 percent ABV, it’s a touch too sweet and boozy to enjoy much more than a few sips.” — Bri Burrows, Head Brewer, Big Rip Brewing Company, Kansas City, Mo.

“To quote a line from a beer bottle, ‘I didn’t choose hops, hops chose me.’ I love a good, crisp, dank West Coast IPA, one of my most favorite styles to brew. I’ve never been a fan of the hazy, fruity IPAs that have taken hold here in the states. Stone Brewing is one of my favorite breweries, so when a beer rep buddy of mine dropped off a 6-pack of Stone Neverending Haze at the brewery, I was surprised. But, being that Stone does some amazing beers, I gave it a try. This beer is oh-so hazy with flavors of citrus, pineapple, and strawberry. It comes in at 4 percent ABV and 35 IBUs. I have to say, I was impressed. In no way have I converted to a hazy, juicy IPA drinker but it is one of the best ones I’ve had.” — Joe Crockett, Brewmaster, Rockin’ JY Nano Craft Brewery, Ewa Beach, Hawaii

Charlotte Johnson, 64

Charlotte Ann Johnson, age 64, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, November 22, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. She was born April 22, 1955 in McDowell County, West Virginia to Arthur Glenn Neil and Alstrelia Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Billy Ben Johnson, Calvin Ray Johnson and Dennis A. Newbill.

Charlotte is survived by her daughters, Alicia Johnson Rice and spouse Richard of Winston Salem, Danielle J. Valero and spouse Ramon of Greensboro; son, Treymayne Johnson of Asheville; grandchildren, Nakkio L. Smith and spouse Shaniqual, Nakouye N. Smith all of Winston Salem, Travion L. James Shumate, 81

James Billy Shumate, age 81, of Hays, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2019 at his home. Mr. Shumate was born December 30, 1937 in Wilkes County to Center and Verna Richardson Shumate. He worked for Wayne’s Farm for over 30 years as a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Handy Shumate; his children, Kenneth James Shumate of Thurmond, Talmadge Wayne Shumate and spouse Penny, Johnny Ray Shumate and spouse Tonya all of Hays; Lisa Porter and spouse Terry of North Wilkesboro, Teresa Brewer and spouse Jon of Thurmond, Billy Jason Shumate and spouse Erica of State Road; sister, Betty Aulsbury of Hays; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Brenda Church, 72

Mrs. Brenda Kay Henderson Church, age 72 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, November 24, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Second Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Dillard and Rev. Wiley Boggs officiating. Burial will be in the Church Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Church was born July 27, 1947 in Iredell County to Mull and Frankie Keever Henderson. Brenda was Phi Theta Kappa in college, world best cook, accepted with full honors to the University of Chapel Hill at age 59, she loved spending time with her grandchildren, best private detective, huge Tarheel fan and world’s best mother, grandmother and a caring loving wife. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister; Paulette Cloer, a brother; Jerry Henderson and fur baby; Tiny.

She is survived by her husband; Eugene Church of the home, three daughters; Gina Hall and husband Gregory of Hays, Lori Church of North Wilkesboro and April Wilburn and husband Roger of Hays, two sons; Johnny Eugene Church of North Wilkesboro and Matthew Boyd Church and wife Haillee of Millers Creek, twelve grandchildren; Maria Church, Matthew Church, Monica Church, Brittany Church, Zoey Church, Reed Church, Cameron Hall, Noah Hall, Chance Kohlmeier, Autumn Transeau, Hunter Transeau and Philip Wilburn, four great grandchildren and a brother; Paul Henderson of Statesville

Dwight Swaim, 76

Mr. Dwight Ervin Swaim, age 76 of Boomer, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2019 at his home.

Memorial services with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be private.

Mr. Swaim was born October 23, 1943 in Wilkes County to Robert Artis Swaim and Grace Bell Swaim. He served in the United State Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Swaim retired from Wilkes Telecommunications (Wilkes Telephone). He coached numerous Little League Teams and was a wonderful Husband and Father.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son; Brain Irving Swaim, a sister; Georgie Lee Swaim Cothren and two brothers; Bobby Dean Swaim and James Calvin “Pete” Swaim.

He is survived by his wife; Brenda Kay Pardue Swaim of the home, a son; Robert Swaim and wife Erica of Bermuda Run, two grandchildren; Alexander Swaim and Charlotte Swaim.

Viola Jarvis, 95

Mrs. Viola Elizabeth James Jarvis, age 95 of Millers Creek, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services were November 24, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Chris Byrne officiating. Burial was in the Fishing Creek Baptist Church cemetery. .

Mrs. Jarvis was born June 15, 1924 in Wilkes County to W.B. and Nellie Anderson James. She was a Homemaker where she loved to sew and garden. Mrs. Jarvis retired from L & L Manufacturing. She was a lifelong member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church and attended Welcome Home Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jarvis was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Richard Carson Jarvis, two sisters; Oma Laws and Charlotte Jordan and five brothers; Joe, Noah, Jesse, Calvin and Doug James.

She is survived by two daughters; Libby Elledge and husband Benny of Statesville and Gloria South and husband Roy of Lexington, a son; Ernie Jarvis and wife Susan of Canton GA, three grandchildren; Jeff Elledge and wife Diane, Jaime Davies and husband Geoff and Julie S. Gregory Alan Nilo, age 56

Gregory Alan Nilo, age 56, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Mill Creek Manor in Statesville. He was born February 19, 1963 in Wilkes County to Marcelino and Veda Royal Nilo. Gregory enjoyed country and gospel music and watching sports, especially the Atlanta Braves. He received many medals from the Special Olympics and enjoyed group home outings with all of his friends. Gregory loved his family and especially Christmas. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Ray, Jerry, Bill, Danny and Larry Nilo.

Surviving are his brothers, Bob Nilo of Rushville, Indiana, Jim Nilo and spouse Ann of Cleveland, N.C., Charles Nilo and spouse Michelle of Ocean City, Maryland; sisters, Faye Stone and spouse Jonah of North Wilkesboro, Angela Wilson and spouse Mark of Hudson many nieces and nephews.

Danny Ferguson, 85

Danny Hunter Ferguson, age 85, of Millers Creek, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Universal Health Care of King. He was born July 1, 1934 in Giles County, Virginia to Oather Harding and Thelma Calloway Ferguson. Danny was a member of Cricket Baptist Church and retired as a truck driver with Gardner Mirror for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bud Ferguson; and sisters, Aliene Clemmons, Jean Williams and Peggy Smith.

Thelma Isom, 94

Mrs. Thelma Lee Nordan Isom, age 94 of Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services were November 24, at Wilkesboro Church of Christ with Pastor Lowell White officiating. Private family entombment will be held in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Thelma was born October 5, 1925 in Harnett County to Deb Nordan and Cora Wilson Nordan. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grams and Friend. Thelma was a wonderful housekeeper, cook and a devoted member of the Wilkesboro Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son; Ronald Lewis Gardner, a daughter in law; Edna Gardner and two sisters; Eloise Guy and Melba Langdon.

She is survived by her husband of sixty four years; Billy Isom of the home, a daughter; Dani Gail Isom of Winston Salem, three sons; Thomas Lee Gardner of Raleigh, Dale Lloyd Isom and wife Michelle of Wilkesboro and David L. Isom and wife Katrina of Colorado, twelve grandchildren; Missy Gardner Holland, Tony Gardner, Gina Gardner Allen, Kevin Isom, Daniel Isom, Caitlen Isom Wurderman, Brittney Isom, Morgan Isom Bass, Kellen Isom, Connor Isom, William Isom and Elizabeth Isom, twelve great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and a daughter in law; Carolyn Gardner of Raleigh.

Alvin Johnson, 62

Alvin “Dale” Johnson, age 62, of Ronda, passed away Monday, November 18, 2019. Dale was born October7, 1957 in Surry County to Johnnie Isaac and Annie Sue Soots Johnson. He was preceded in death by his mother, and sister, Nancy Sue Johnson.

Surviving are his son, David Johnson of Ronda; his father, Ike Johnson of Ronda; sisters, Katherine Johnson, Lois Ann Johnson, Jennifer Johnson Brown all of Ronda; brothers, Charles Dean Johnson of Ronda, John Johnson of Arlington, Joe Johnson of Elkin; grandchildren, Dailen Isaac Johnson, Ashir Naiten Johnson, Austin Isaac Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service was Friday, November 22, at Ronda Baptist Tabernacle Church Cemetery . Flowers will be accepted. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Gray, 67

Ruth Gray, lifelong resident of Wilkesboro died November 17th following an extended period of declining health due to Alzheimer's disease. She was born May 27, 1950 to the late Russell Gray, Jr. and Annie Vannoy Gray. She was predeceased by a brother Russell Gray lll.

She is survived by her brother Jim Gray and wife Mary Iva of Durham, NC. She is also survived by a nephew David Gray and wife Hannah and their children Anne and Walter of Richmond and by a niece Martha Gray Wiehe and husband Kevin of Durham and their sons Elliot and Emmett. Also surviving is a special cousin Beth Gray Ferguson of Mooresville and her children Mary Elizabeth, Gray and Eleanor.

She had a 30 year career teaching in the Wilkes County Schools at North High School, Woodward Jr High School and Wilkes Central High School. She was a parishioner of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Wilkesboro where she served a term as president of the ECW and served as the clerk of the vestry. She served on the Wilkesboro Historical Preservation Committee and was a trustee of Old Wilkes, Inc. At one time she was an avid golfer. A great pleasure was her home flower garden from which she loved to share bulbs and clippings with other garden enthusiasts.

A memorial service conducted by the priest-in-charge Kedron Nicholson and the Rev. Susan Whittington was November 23rd at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Patricia Eller, 64

Mrs. Patricia Ann “Patsy” Eller, age 64 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral services were November 17, at Cricket Baptist Church with Rev. Randall Milsaps and Rev. Steve Bufkin officiating.

Mrs. Eller was born June 12, 1955 in Wilkes County to “T.C.” Eller and Mary Frances Dillard Eller. She was retired from Tyson Foods. Mrs. Eller was a member of Cricket Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Bill Hawkins.

She is survived by a daughter; LeAnn Adams and husband Johnny of Millers Creek, a son; Sam Hawkins and wife Carrie of North Wilkesboro, four grandchildren; Ashley Minton, Libby Adams, Grant Adams and Olivia Hawkins and three sisters; Geraldine Staley and husband Ed, Martha Lynn Lester and husband Jim and Teresa Minton and husband Shane all of Millers Creek.
