WEEK 9 - CULTURAL MATERIALISM
Today’s lecture is focused on Cultural Materialism. Cultural Materialists has three levels of social systems that constitute a universal pattern: Infrastructure, Structure and Superstructure. Infrastructure (Technological & Material Realities) is the base, it is how it interacts with the local environment. Structure is a society’s economic or social organization. Superstructure relates to ideology and symbolism.
They are all interconnected. For example, changes in Infrastructure results in changes in the structure and superstructure. Culture is learned, it is integrated, and is based on symbols.
Tumblr media
Since culture can be based on symbols, it can be seen as a gesture to signify something. For example, these emojis can represent New York as a whole. The apples symbolize "The Big Apple", another term well known to resemble New York.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today's activity we were given 3 questions to answer. We had to choose 1 piece of infrastructure and discuss it. My teammates and I decided to choose the Vending Machine. We saw many technological advancements correlated to this. One of them which is an interface for the customers to select what they like or the "cashless" option.
The rise of mobile phones has affected society as a whole. For us designers, it can be seen as another source for "learning". For me personally, it has helped me to look for project inspirations or to take pictures for classes.
For the final question, I personally think that the world lacks digital privacy. Everyone is able to retrieve information about anyone they search up online, thus invading privacy. People also manage to publish private information online too which crosses boundaries.

Kampong Lorong Buangkok
The last village of Singapore
Kampong Lorong Buangkok is the last survival village in Singapore, where remnants of the 1960s are alive and well. This place is far away from the city.
I was able to visit this place in 2017 with my husband. When we heard about this place we were wondering until it was seen. Still, they left this place an old look, and we can imagine how Singapore was in the past. Honestly, now we can say they are very attractive and Singapore is one of the most developed countries in the world.
If you are supposed to travel to Singapore, don't miss this place.

Experience in WOII module.
Overall, I have learnt so much during WOII. The topics I learnt in each week has been very meaningful to me and I think I will put to use the things I learnt. There are so many new words that have been taught and I understand these words clearly. The weekly activities was fun and I think it puts us in a good stress. I get to share and articulate my ideas and thoughts with my other classmates. All of us had to brainstorm ideas and test our creativity. I also notice that the topics I learnt were kind of an everyday situation. Like during week 9, It was about Cultural Materialism and we were shown a picture of an old Kampung in Singapore called, Kampung Lorong Buangkok. The infrastructure, (the technology) the structure (the social organisation) and superstructure (the ideology) are interrelated. It makes us think, how can an old kampong in Singapore still stand while the government are building HDB's around it? That puts us at a dilemma. I really think the topics can be an everyday use for me. Whatever I see outside, I can just relate it the topics I learned. I also think that doing this journal in Tumblr is a great idea. I think it makes me more spoken out and honestly, I don't even think its a journal. Its my own personal blog and being a person that has never written a blog before, I can say this has been a wonderful experience.

Singapore is the world’s most urban nation, with 100 percent of its population living in urban areas, according to UNESCO. But hidden beneath its towering skyscrapers and modern infrastructure is one low-lying hidden gem: the main island’s last surviving traditional village.
Built in 1956 before Singapore’s economic boom, Kampong Lorong Buangkok’s 28 dwellings are home to families who live differently from nearly everyone else in the city-state. Located in Singapore’s northern suburbs, the kampong (village) contrasts sharply with the concrete high rises that house the majority of locals.
The village, which is the size of two soccer fields, offers a window into what Singapore looked like before it became a global trade giant. Visit, and you’ll find colorful one-story houses, a canal, a small mosque, and winding dirt paths weaving through the town. The houses are made with zinc and wood roofs.
Kampong Lorong Buangkok was settled by a mixture of Malaysians and Chinese. The residents enjoy a slower pace of life and strong sense of community. Although the village is somewhat isolated from urban Singapore, it still has electricity, running water, garbage collection, and a postal service.
The village was established by Chinese medicine seller Sng Teow Koon as a plot of four to six homes. For rent, the residents pay upwards of $30 per month to his children. However, the land the village sits on is worth approximately $33 million, so some residents fear that the kampong may soon be paved over for a new development.
