The Raven Witch Chapter 2

First Chapter

Luz was ecstatic to begin training to become a witch. She wore a black witch's robe and hat. Along with a name tag that said "Witch Apprentice Luz". Just then Lilith reemerged from the basement. She looked exactly the same she did yesterday except her hair was messier.

"Oh, your still here," Lilith said. She rubbed her eyes. Luz chose to ignore the comment.

"Good morning, Miss Lilith. I am ready for my first day of Witch Apprenticeship." Luz said.

"It's morning," Lilith muttered. Then she looked at Luz. She seemed to do a double-take. She let out a laugh. "What are you wearing?" Luz's smile faded.

"Uhm...a witch robe and a witch's hat," Luz said. She was suddenly unsure.

"No one dresses like that. You're wearing a dirty traffic cone and a bathrobe." Lilith said. Luz took off the cone and blew on it. It revealed the orange traffic cone underneath. Luz set it down, but she wasn't one to be deterred.

"Well, teach me some spells. When do I get a magic staff? Was I supposed to bring my own runes? Do you have a dangerous magical quest for me?" Luz said. Lilith frowned.

"Calm down, kid," Lilith said. She then grabbed a pile of books from the counter of the kitchen. She then handed the books to Luz. The human grunted as she took the weight of the stack. "You can read through this stack."

"But what about magic?" Luz asked

"Humans don't have a magic vile sack. There is no guarantee that you can even do magic without a staff." Lilith said

"Then, what about a magic staff?" Luz asked.

"A witch creates their own staff after years of rigorous schooling. You can begin by reading through that stack of books." Lilith said. With that, she turned around and went back down the stairs to the basement.

Luz took the stack into the living room. She set them down on the floor. She took the robe off and flopped onto the floor. She took the top book from the stack. She read the cover of the book. It was a history book. Luz grunted.

"What's hooting Luz?" Hooty asked. Luz jumped. She took a moment to take a deep breath to calm her heart rate.

"Lilith. She just handed me homework. If I wanted homework then I would have gone to summer camp." Luz complained

"Lulu spends all her time in the basement reading and researching," Hooty said. Luz felt her frustration rise.

"Well, I'm not Lilith!" Luz exclaimed. "At this point, Azura had been given a magic quest. Maybe Lilith isn't the teacher I hoped for."

"I'll talk to Lulu," Hooty said. Luz smiled at the house demon.

"Thank you, Hooty," Luz said. Hooty moved towards the basement. Luz stood up but didn't follow. Lilith entered the room wearing a dark blue cloak and had a grey bag in her hands.

"Hootsifer tells me you want to do something a little more hands-on," Lilith said.

"Yes," Luz exclaimed.

"Very well you can help me sell potions and while we are out you may ask me questions," Lilith said.

"When can I learn how to make potions?" Luz asked. Lilith sighed at that.

"Tomorrow," Lilith said. Luz squealed and rushed and hugged the witch. Lilith stood stiff clearly uncomfortable with it.

"Thank you, thank you," Luz said.

"Yes, yes, now we have potions to sell," Lilith said.

"Right," Luz said. With that, she released the witch. Lilith handed over the bag to Luz. She then led the human out the door.

"Have a nice trip," Hooty called after them. As they walked through Bonesborough. Luz couldn't help but look around staring in amazement.

"Wow," Luz breathed.

"It's rude to stare," Lilith said. Luz looked over to the witch.

"I've only seen places like this in my dreams. It's incredible. And I'm the only human here?" Luz exclaimed in glee.

"Yes," Lilith said

"Wow. There must be a reason for that, right?" Luz said

"No," Lilith said

"Why am I here?" Luz asked

"Because you followed Branwen," Lilith said

"What if I, Luz Noceda, average teen, actually had... a predetermined path of greatness? Just like Azura!" Luz gasped in excitement.

"No," Lilith said. Luz frowned at her.

"What?" Luz asked

"There is no destiny. Your future is decided by your actions, your skills, and your knowledge." Lilith said

"Then why am I here?" Luz asked.

"You are here because you made the choice to come here by following my palisman," Lilith said. "Now, come we have potions to sell."

Luz thought being the only human in a mythical world made her special, and yet. Everything tried to eat her or scream at her. Lilith would then sigh and help the teen. She couldn't help but be discouraged.

"I'm going to try a not dog," Luz said.

"Alright," Lilith said. The witch wasn't paying much attention to Luz. The teen walked away with a sigh. She looked at her Azura book in disappointment.

"At this point, Azura had already been sent on an enchanted quest. Where's my quest granting wizard?" Luz said to herself.

"I couldn't help but overhear that you desire a quest." A man said beside her. Luz screamed and turned. "Sorry I didn't mean to startle you, Young Lady, but I dare I say sense something about you." She looked over at the wizard. He had a long white beard with a baby fox in it and wore a purple hat and purple robe with gold sparkling stars on them.

"Oh, this day just got good. Magic wizard." Luz said in excitement.

"I have a quest..." The wizard began

"A quest!" Luz exclaimed

"You didn't let me finish. I have a question." The wizard said

"Oh," Luz said in disappointment.

"Would you like to go on a quest?" The wizard asked.

"Yes!" Luz cried in glee. The wizard pulled out a rolled-up piece of parchment for his beard.

"I might have just the thing." The wizard said. He unrolled the parchment revealing an old map. "The prophecy speaks of a young human girl who will claim the Celestial Staff and free this world from an ancient evil." Luz ran her hand across the map. It filled her with excitement. She was exactly like Azura. "Perhaps thou hath cometh here for a reason."

"Perhaps I hath," Luz said in amazement.

"Should you believe yourself worth to attempt..." The wizard began

"Excuse me." Lilith interrupted. This caused the wizard and the human girl to turn to her. Lilith stood there with her arms crossed and a look of displeasure. Luz chose to ignore it.

"Lilith this wizard has a quest for me. He has a map and everything." Luz said. The witch raised a single eyebrow at that.

"Map, let me see that." Lilith snapped. She ripped the map out of the wizard's hands. She began to look over it. Each second her frown deepened. "This is a fake. There is no such thing as a celestial staff. Not to mention this parchment has been treated with multiple aging techniques to look as if it is older than it is." With that blue flames destroyed the map. Luz felt her heartbreak. "Come, along Luz."

Lilith turned around and began to walk away. Luz followed behind. She couldn't help but feel angry. Angry at Lilith for destroying the map. Anger at the Boiling Isles for not being what she wanted.

"Why did you do it?" Luz demanded. This caused the said witch to turn around to face the human.

"Do what?" Lilith asked. This caused Luz's anger to rise more. She clenched her hands.

"Burn the map. That was my chance." Luz exclaimed. Lilith sighed.

"I was protecting you," Lilith said

"What from adventure? From excitement?" Luz exclaimed

"From being taken advantage of," Lilith said.

"What I think you are just jealous that he could offer me something that your dusty books can't!" Luz shouted. Lilith's face hardened.

"I have spent most of my life here, but if you truly think that you know better then go find the wizard. If you get in a jam I'm not going to save you." Lilith said. With that the witch turned around and stormed away. Luz stood around for a moment then turned back towards the town. She is going to find that wizard.

Lilith and Luz walked away from the puppet demon. The human was slightly trailing behind the witch. Luz had thought that she was a chosen one, but he was just manipulating him.

"I thought you weren't gonna save me." Luz finally said

"I wasn't about to let you die so I followed you," Lilith said

"Maybe I should go back," Luz said. Lilith stopped and turned to the human teen.

"Oh, giving up already," Lilith said

"It's just I thought that it would be different. This isn't the pg-13 fantasy world I've dreamed about. Maybe I made a mistake in staying." Luz said. Lilith hummed clearly in thought.

"Before you make that choice perhaps there is something I should show you," Lilith said. She turned back around and began to walk back toward her house.

"Is it a book?" Luz asked with skepticism. Lilith turned her head around. There was a small smile on her black-painted lips.

"Yes," Lilith said. Luz groaned but followed the witch. They arrived at the house and gave short greetings to Hooty. Lilith then picked up the first book on the stack of books that she had handed the human this morning. It was the history book that Luz had dismissed. She opened it and turned a couple of pages. She then handed it to Luz. "Read this."

It is still unclear how early witches used magic without magic vile sacks. All evidence point's toward early witches using magic. Albeit in a primitive way. It is suggested that they used elemental magic.

Though there are a great many questions about what those elements are. Perhaps it was a more broad definition of the 9 main covens. The research will continue to be needed on their elemental magic.

Another mystery is how they cast said elemental magic. It is well known that they didn't have a magic vile sack so how was the magic used. Some researchers suggest a primitive version of bard magic but that is still being debated with most saying it couldn't be possible. It is clear that however they did it has been lost to history.

Luz looked up from the book. Lilith had a very serious look on her face.

"You aren't a chosen one, but perhaps, you can help me understand our past. That doesn't sound too bad does it?" Lilith said. Luz rushed forward and hugged the witch.

"Thank you," Luz said. Lilith sighed.

"You're welcome, human," Lilith said

Beauty and the Guard AU

An AU on Beauty and the beast but there’s no beast unless you want to count belos as one but he’s not the focus character Hunter just refuses to take off his mask the whole time.  

Takes place when luz is trying to save Eda from petrification, Luz strikes a deal with Belos, Giving the portal but manages to destroy it. She’s instead taken captive and warned by Belos that if she escapes, He’ll send an army to capture not just Eda but everyone she ever met and befriended. 

- Has to stay in the Castle as to answer Belos’ questions about the human realm and any other information gathering.

- Hunter is assigned as her chaperone but not all the time. Not when he’s on missions. Steve fills in. 

- Luz agrees with Hunter to not ask about his mask. She says that she doesn’t have a desire to get to get to know him and Considering how the majority of citizens are under the monster category, she understands that he doesn’t want anyone to look. Hunter is not sure if he’s relieve that she will keep her promise not to look under his mask or feel insulted that she basically called him ugly.

- When not 'helping’ Belos information gathering, She puts to work as a cleaning lady, Luz is furious about it. She can’t believe she has to clean more there than she does at home in a dusty castle. The other cleaning witches can do their job well with magic, meanwhile it’s all manual labor. Not to mention she shares quarters with them and they snore.

- Tries to convince Hunter to let her go out even if its around the castle grounds, of course, He says no and shuts down her attempts.

- While doing her cleaning duties, Luz wanders around the castle to look around any valuable information on Belos for any way to help eda/or whatever without the Golden Guard following her. She finds the forbidden library and is amazed by the goldmine of BI’s forbidden knowledge! She only gets to look through some books before she gets caught by Hunter which he angrily yells at her about being in a place where she’s not supposed to be in. Drags her out and locks the library.

- She tries to run away but often gets stopped by Hunter, the threat of going to the dungeon doesn’t scare her (”I escaped there like twice”). He relents and allows her to go on these ‘adventures’ when he’s not in a mission, He finds it to be fun but would not admit it.

- Luz manages to get the freedom to go back to school but is secretly spied on by Hunter, though he sometimes get caught by the monsters or students roaming around. Hunter picks her up after school. (weak sauce, idk what to put here to make it more interesting)

- When he’s not chaperoning her in the outside world, Hunter gets envious how much fun Steve is having with Luz when they go on an adventure. Detailing their bounty adventures, using the snails to shop and buy things. He can’t really do much about it but when he does go, Steve gets sad; Luz promises him that she’ll get him souvenirs.

- Somehow finds out that Hunter is a magicless witch and Luz shows him that she can do magic through glyphs. Hunter is amazed and they start geeking out about it until he stops himself since it’s a forbidden knowledge.

-  Luz had succeed running away from the castle but its to the beach to stare at the boiling waters. She tells Hunter that the castle life was suffocating her and needed to go out. Hunter stayed with her until they were ready to go back. 

- Hunter secretly takes her to the forbidden library to cheer her up so she can learn more and the boiling isles history. Hunter is happy to have someone with the same interests as him to talk to about wild magic. Gets more comfortable around her and talk in secret more about it. During their time together get bond over varies subjects, the library becoming their sanctuary when its not in use, which is most of the time. They share about each other’s realms constellations, history, what kind of magic is around, creatures and about the titan. Luz scolds him for this, referring back when he got angry at her for being curious when he basically did the same thing in secret.

- After some time getting comfortable and know each other through mutual interest and deep talks. Hunter gets bothered that since she doesn’t know his name, She has no choice but to call him by his title. When they are coming back from doing errands, He tells her his name and she’s allowed to call him by it when they are together/in private. His heart fluttered when he hears her say his name.

- Luz starts to grow feelings for him despite not knowing what he looks like. She had opportunities to see what he looks at the times when he’s asleep during their time in the library or when his mask gets knocked off during a temp job but kept her promise to not look at his face which leads to uncomfortable situation where she accidentally gropes him when she was looking for him to give him his mask back, luckily never below the belt. What she finds is his built felt normal. No hidden spikes, slime or what-have-you to suggests that he’s in the monster/demon category. Hunter obviously flustered. 

- (Following the plot of Hunting palisman w/ some changes to the plot cause obviously Eda)  At school Luz can’t find the palisman that suits her and is upset about it. Hunter, although he still hesitant about his feelings towards wild magic, tries to comfort her. (convo from the Hunting palisman) Luz  talks about What happened at the school, and questions Hunter about how he manages to know what he wanted for his future and How he came to the emperor’s coven, to help her get some guidance from him. He tells her about himself and lack of future and Although she isn’t sure about hers, at least she gets to choose. Luz feels sad for him and hugs him. Hunter melts in her embrace. 

- Just as he’s about to fall asleep in her arms, Rascal pops out of his hiding place and gives Hunter a heart attack. Rascal chooses Hunter to be his palisman. Obviously Luz feels a bit disappointed that hunter got his palisman when he doesn’t want it, the look of uncertainty he has with the palisman makes her determine to get him used to it. She can always be a teacher since she has experience with Owlbert.

- With his new staff that he’s still unsure of, Hunter decides to take Luz out somewhere out of the ordinary routine after school, somewhere special (think like events like the wailing stars but something else) but that turned romantic. At some point he slightly lifts his mask to kiss Luz’s hand. She’s obviously swooned. May have peeked and sees that he has loose strand of medium blond hair sticking out and that his Lips felt like normal. Starts to think he looks like more like human(or witch?) like some of her classmates.

- They become even more friendlier as it becomes a usual thing for them to be seen together in the castle when Luz is or isn’t working, even the coven members are noticing this, especially Kikimora. Coven leaders are just shocked that someone liked him enough to be his a friend. 

- Kikimora start planting seeds of doubts in Luz’s mind about whether Hunter really is being her friend or just fulling his duties as he was told by Belos. What if their talks where his manipulative ways to get her to tell him about her and other information gathering. Was he really talking to her as she clean because he’s really saw her as a friend or just keeping guard to make sure she doesn’t run away. Kiki does this to mess whatever good thing Hunter has since she can’t kill him.  Luz tries her best to ignore her, rationalizing that that’s quite an investment for Hunter to go through to manipulate her.

- Somewhere a long the line, Luz finds out the truth about day of unity and the truth of Kikimora’s words of Hunter’s actions that she assumed was just lies that Kiki told her. She’s hurt to think the guy she grown to love had any knowledge about it and betrayed her. “I though you were a good guy [mentions all the stuff they do together and such] I guess You’re not my friend, you’re just the golden guard.” It kills him when she said that.

- alternatively he finds out that she has the key to the partially fixed portal door. Is conflicted on whether to break their bond for belos or not especially after learning that she’s homesick and wants to see her mom again. Fought with Kikimora over it with lead to Luz finding out their fight and gets heartbroken that Hunter has it, assumes the worst that kikimora was right.  Again, “I though you were a good guy I guess I was wrong. You’re not my friend, you’re just the golden guard.” His feels his heart breaks. 

- Luz gets rescued by Eda, Lilith, king, hooty, her friends. Hunter doesn’t try to stop her but apologizes to her for everything and for what it’s worth, he’s happy to got to know her and that he loved her, whether she feels the same or not. Luz obviously shocked but couldn’t give a response because the gang were fleeing.

- Back in the owl house, Luz is a mess because of the mixed feelings she has for hunter. In one hand, she knew him as this cold person who was very dedicated to his job while the other as an intelligent, funny, (other more things) and is confused on which hunter is the one she grown to love. ( Feels devastated about it because she thinks that he faked his feelings for her to get knowledge on the key or whatever although hunter didn’t really know she had it.)

- Lilith is dumfounded that Luz has feelings for him because she known him to be a brat. Luz argues that He is but much more than that. As she explains why, she gets hits with the epiphany that she does indeed had fallen in love with him. Eda laughs, “Not sure If I approve catching feelings for your nanny, I thought you were being tortured or something but I see now what you have been really doing.” wagging her eyebrows. Luz: “They have me clean the castle from top to bottom! By hand!” “I don’t approve then.” Luz shares her knowledge of wild magic with the group that she learn from the castle’s library.

- Weeks later, Luz tries to sleep but hears small knocking on the window, She opens it and sees Rascal with the key with him and a note from Hunter apologizing again for what happened. Belos doesn’t know about the key. She sends a note back, telling him to meet her. 

- idk how they makeup. (Working on it) Luz walks up to Hunter and asks if she could take off his mask which he agrees to. Luz takes his mask off and smiles, “well look at that, Magenta eyes. You aren’t ugly as I thought to you were!” hunter frowns, “But you’re handsome as I imagined,” leans up and kisses him first. Hunter tosses the mask away for good and hugs her close to kiss her better. Luz pulls back,  “and... I love you too.” Hunter isn’t sure what his new future holds but knows for sure that Luz is a part of it.

( Had an idea in an alternative story plot around the part where they went out to a ‘date’. They confessed their love and started to kiss lol imagine them having to use a blindfold to keep her eyes closed. But it was a bit too sensual? Or Sensuous? It just didn’t fit in the flow of the storyline. Why did this became a dabble? )

Hunter, for the first time, gets self conscious about his looks. He tries not look into mirrors, though hard when his mask reflects the face he tries hard to avoid looking at when putting it on, He doesn’t really thought much about his looks, except for the scar that’s plastered over his cheek. The ugly scar that he rather forget he has.

As Hunter looks down at Luz’s face, blindfolded to prevent her from accidently opening her eyes during their ‘make out session’, He’s starting to believe that Luz lied about being magicless. He can’t help but feel enchanted over how beautiful she looked by the way the moonlight cast a heavenly glow over her cute features. He can only imagine how her eyes would look like if she didn’t have the blindfold on. “I wish I can stare into your eyes,”

“Why can’t we?”

“You know why”

“Right, I’m not allowed to look under the mask.” she pouted.

“And... well,” Luz attentively waits for him to continue, “I may not look... pretty as you think I imagine. If that makes any sense.” He sheepishly confessed

As Luz wraps her arms around his shoulders, Hunter feels her hands feeling up up his neck, tenderly cradling his face. Hunter fails to resist the blush spreading across his cheeks and the warm pleasant feeling in his chest

“I have other senses to “see” you,” She says sliding her fingers along his jawline, “Strong jaw, ... No scales, or slime... just soft skin” 

She found one patch on the left of his face in particular that caught her interest but before she could take her time to feel it, Hunter quickly shook her hand away from it. Sensing its something he feels uncomfortable with, she decides to leave it alone. 

She continues, “I can hear your voice; sound hot,” He suddenly felt shy at the comment. He was always self-conscious as he has been told that it was annoying. He felt relieved that it wasn’t the case for her.  “Heh, Thanks”

“I can smell you, " She nuzzles against his neck and scrunches up her nose, “... you need a shower.” Hunter frowns, that was certainly killed the mood a little. She pulls back, “But I like that you smell like pine forest sometimes,” weak save.

 “And,” she hums as grazes her thumb over his lips, licking her own. Hunter subconsciously sucks in his breathe, feeling himself getting hotter by the second.

“I can taste you.” finishing off her sentence by pressing her lips against his; briefly misses his lips by kissing the corner of his mouth before correcting herself. 

Hunter smirks in amusement. 

Alright, He admits that was pretty smooth of her to end it the way she did, even though she fumbled at the end. 

He feels a bit confident on that fateful day where he feels brave enough to show her his face, He just hope it lives up to her expectations despite her reassurance to the contrary. 

Luz, on the other hand, is glad that he’s feels like a normal person underneath the mask, she can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that hunter possess no fangs.

Dana Terrace AMA (Part 3)

Pink Stripe, AKA Amity’s look-alike from our world is confirmed to more or less be like a… Proto-Amity of sorts, so she’s more of an easter egg than anything else! That, or she’s a repurposed Easter Egg and WILL have lore… But more than likely there isn’t meant to be any counterparts in the human world on neither an in-universe nor writing perspective!

The Twins are salty over Grom, but will also have stuff to ‘distract’ them… This kind of screams ‘Blight family development’ a lot, doesn’t it? Probably Amity standing up to her parents and the twins likely taking her side, or at least acting from a place of protecting Amity… I can only hope these ‘distractions’ are good things, but who am I kidding?

Bird-themes are a Clawthorne thing, which really makes me wonder more about Owl Mask, especially since the Blights have never been associated with Owls before… Is this a long-lost cousin, parent, sibling? Child, even…?! Why didn’t Lilith nor Eda speak of them? I have to wonder if Eda’s ring is going to come into play here, if it was used to make some sort of ‘construct’ that is Owl Mask, who has a connection to Eda and is able to track her down as a result… And if Luz will pull off something similar with her shard of Belos’ mask once the truth is revealed!

Dana alludes to her favorite character having already been met, but not HIS face… While this could be Belos, I feel like these last two episodes count as a ‘proper meeting’ by now, which indicates she’s talking of Owl Mask… Which indicates that Owl Mask is a dude, but I can’t say for sure! Dana also said she has a bunch of other faves we’ve seen in some capacity, but not really, and I have to wonder if this includes the Blight Parents, the Heads of the Covens, etc.!

Eda’s been to Vegas, and she wasn’t impressed! Stan also got married in Vegas… Also, Eda would beat Lilith at Hexes Hold ‘Em, though she’d of course cheat! Though she also cheated in Grudgby but still turned out to be the better player in the end, so…!

We have confirmation that Coven Bindings also restrict very basic spells like levitation, even if they are still possible! This implies that there are base spells that don’t really fit into any category but are restricted nonetheless, or that you CAN do very minor spells from other categories, but as Dana said, it’s a lot harder and weaker! That implies such spells aren’t supposed to be accessible, which really furthers how Belos makes people dependent upon the system he’s created!

Dana also said that Witches can’t physically perform spells, which implies that the Coven Binding works on a body-level, and not as a mental block… Meaning it may be possibly for Glyphs to get around them! If so, then Luz is going to accidentally start a revolution and Belos will NOT be pleased, I have to wonder if he worked from the shadows to make a shift to Bile magic or at least focused on suppressing memory of Glyphs as a potential work-around to his Coven bindings! Everything DID change with Luz, huh…?

Also, ‘Wizard’ is apparently just a generic title (as implied by Episode 2), and there was a scrapped line alluding to Warlock=Edgelord!

Palismans are confirmed to have their own separate power source, so Eda can still cast magic without glyphs the way Luz did in the Season Finale! Witches will carve them from a special type of wood as teens (so before they join a Coven), usually at school or while their parents are watching… However, Dana alludes to that special wood no longer being around! Is Belos burning down the source of palismans because they’re a potential workaround to his Coven Bindings? Is he seizing the resource to make Palismans for himself? Did somebody else do it to keep Belos from making Palismans, what about the giant tree we see the Bat Queen fly off to, is this one of the final remnants of that ‘special wood’ that Palismans are made of?

We also know that Lilith’s palisman IS alive, which just furthers my idea that Eda is unusual in that she treats Owlbert as more than just a living battery, or an AI to give orders to but completely forget about otherwise! I love you Eda, you love everyone and everything for what they truly are and no wonder the Bat Queen trusted you…!

           Dana alludes towards Parental Conflict in Season 2, so likely stuff about the Blight Parents, but also maybe Camila? She also mentions Island Exploration, so we’ll likely be seeing the hand… MAN, this keeps reminding me of Bionicle (specifically that one concept that was never explored) and I am LIVING for it! I have to wonder if the Titan’s hand is related to a potential staff/palisman, how it cast magic, etc… If there’s something in that hand, if it’s clenched around something…

           If Eda were to be cured, her hair would still be gray! Also we’ll get a better idea of Belos’ inspirations later in Season 2, but that’s kind of stuff one would already figure out. Dana speaks of a distinction between ‘Hard Apple Blood’ and the stuff they put in juice boxes ‘for babies’, which makes me wonder if it’s like. The distinction between Beer and Root Beer? If Apple Blood is alcoholic, but there’s a non-alcoholic version for kids and it has nutritional value? Does Eda drink alcohol every morning?

           Teen Witches enter Covens as soon as they graduate, maybe even earlier if they’re talented! So about seventeen or eighteen… YIKES, I said it before but it IS messed-up that people are expected to immediately figure themselves out permanently at such a young age! Sure the process at least begins to set you down that certain ‘track’ in a literal and metaphorical sense when high school begins, but that’s so much pressure! Belos sure is eager to shorten the pipeline between schools and his Covens… And while options within a Coven are possible, that’s still SO MUCH that’s permanently removed from your possibilities!

           Willow works out every morning but doesn’t brag about it, unlike Boscha! Why am I gasping, I already knew that… Buff Willow, just love the idea that before we saw her in Episode 3, she had recently finished pumping her muscles! And that when she talks to Luz in the morning in Really Small Problems, she’d just finished a work-out or was even in the midst of it! I wonder why Willow works out, to help with gardening, or just because? Still, STRONK Willow! Recontextualizes her skill in Grudgby, even if her stamina when it comes to running could use some improvement!

           The Construction Coven is the most ‘obscure’ of the tracks, makes sense it’s the sleeve-color we see least, and naturally sculptors and architects are a part of it! Eda’s bile-sac stopped producing magic bile, which basically means her curse caused organ failure, yikes… But yeah, this makes it clear that Witches don’t exactly have ‘finite’ reserves of magic, or at the very least they recharge… But clearly the curse is messing with Eda!

           Luz is confirmed to just be oblivious, that she doesn’t realize that Amity has a crush on her! She’s also been distracted by Eda’s curse, which really speaks to her being ADHD… But I have to wonder that if Eda’s curse becomes less of an issue, she may have more room to explore Amity’s flustered reactions around her…?

           And… that’s about it! Besides basic confirmation on getting to learn more about literally everyone in Season 2, or stuff we already knew (like Willow and Amity still not exactly being friends, but at least having a good start)! This was a FASCINATING lore-dump, a brilliant AMA, and my first one ever and it did NOT disappoint! I found myself constantly refreshing to see Dana’s replies!

           There’s also a bunch of other stuff Dana talked about that isn’t related to lore, like her inspirations, how to pitch a show, etc.! So make sure to check that out, I can’t say much there because I’m not exactly an expert on that sort of thing!

The Owl House looks super cool! I have a feeling it’ll have a Gravity Falls-esq atmosphere, what with the horror-comedy genre. I don’t expect it to be anything but gorgeous, and even the skeptic in me saying that every show I love will have a disappointing cop-out ending is quieter than usual. I’m super pumped for this series, and I just wanted a place to collect promotion material and analyze them. Currently I’m going by the description and a few images from Tumblr and the Disney Wiki page, but if you have any other official information or doodles from twitter, I’d love to hear about them!

“The series is a horror-comedy series that follows Luz, a self-assured teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm. There she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting”

I want to know how to pronounce her name. I call her ‘Luz’ in my head, with a short ‘u’, but I wonder if it’ll be pronounced ‘looz’ which sounds...well, like a term used to describe a certain room in the house. It also sounds like ‘lose’, which is interesting as well.

I’d put her age at around fourteen or fifteen, certainly not lower than thirteen. But this is coming from someone who though Gideon Gleeful was in his thirties, so I’m probably not the best at age estimates.

‘Accidentally stumbles upon a portal’? I wonder if it’s a sort of rip in reality, a magical artifact, a magical portal opened accidentally by a spell, or a villain's doing? Like perhaps they were trying to gain entrance to the mortal realm? -Like another demon we know?-

(That aside, I wonder if we’ll get a little Bill cameo. Like I’m guessing well see a little triangle doodled on the corner of a book. A really tiny easter egg.)

Back to Luz; what about her family? Does she have parents? She goes on to (I’m assuming) live in the demon realm for a while, so I’m super curious about her mortal world family. Is she an orphan? Are her parents awful? Does she have any siblings? Friends? I worry for them and I worry for her.

Is Luz safe in the demon realm? Will she have to be wary about being a human surrounded by supernatural creatures?

How will she get to know Eda and King? Will they rescue her from some sort of threat? Will they be the first people she meets?

How old is King? What about his family? Was he training to be a warrior? How do he and Eda know each other? Was he an acquaintance of hers before she started rebelling?

I’m very interested in the magical system and this world in general; who rules the place? Who is Eda rebelling against? Societal convention or an authority figure?

What exactly is “The Owl House”? I’m taking a guess and saying that it’s either the name of a class in this world or is a name given to people who associate with Eda, given that she’s known as ‘The Owl Lady’ (more on that later).

I’m also intrigued by the fact that the description implies that having ingrained magical abilities is one thing, and being able to perform magic just by training is another. I’m wondering if she actually has no potential to do magic and trains to be able to from scratch/ learns how to use the staff, or if she actually does have some magical abilities and has to work to discover and hone them.

Luz’s character design is so cute!

She and Eda have the same gold eyes; I wonder if this has to do with magical abilities or is symbolism. OR *puts tinfoil hat on* Luz is actually Eda’s daughter, and she was sent to the mortal world- yeah, probably the former. In fact, there seems to be a sort of gold motif around these three; Luz and Eda’s eyes, the latter’s nails and necklace (or whatever that gold thing on her dress is), King’s collar, the sparkles all around them...food for thought.

I see the creepy looking building in the background with “The Owl Sh-” (I can only assume it says ‘shop’)  written on it; more on that later. I’m assuming this is where Eda lives/works. I suppose she runs a shop of sorts?

There’s a massive stained glass design of a red eye on the top of the building. Hmm.

Eda looks a little villainous in this image, so I’m wondering if she will be introduced or come off as sinister. King is also so darn cute.

Cool mom nonchalantly throws magical bug at son, unfazed by daughter’s bewilderment.

Luz seems to have a slightly different outfit here; the pink gradient on her shoes is gone (maybe that was a trick of the lighting) and so are the pink shapes on the bottom of her leggings. The strings of her shirt are gone, and her irises aren’t visible here, though that may be because of that expression. The irises return in later drawings.

So, front and center in the background; ‘The Owl Lady’ is at large with a comically heavy price on her head.

So, first of all, she freaking framed her ‘wanted’ poster. I’m guessing Eda is quite proud of this. I love her for that.

This photo also implies that she’s known King for a while, and he’s likely wanted as an accomplice.

I’m curious as to whether this reward was placed by a personal enemy or by a governing body or other authority figure.  

She’s known as the ‘Owl Lady’; she’s probably a bit of an enigma. That being said, the building on the first photo probably said ‘Owl Shop’ on it, so...Maybe whoever wanted to capture her could search the building that looks pretty darn suspicious? This points to the building being either abandoned or obscured heavily by magic. Or the fact that they know where she is but can’t actually capture her.

Has she failed to have been captured because of her power or because of her being in hiding?

The shop thing is so weird. I don’t even know what to make of it. I guess she owns or lives in this store, but maybe I’m taking the ‘living in the workspace’ thing straight from Gravity Falls.

It seems that they use a dollar sign to represent whatever currency they use.

On to the rest of the background; Eda has an accordian. I need answers. Somebody came in second place for something at some point and she felt the need to hang the medal on her wall. Eda, you better have a good explanation for the friking hand on your wall because otherwise I’m dubbing you ‘Hand Witch 2.0’.

She also has a foam finger and radio; does the demon realm just have similar technology to the mortal world or is it something that perhaps ‘fell through’, maybe through a portal like how Luz did? If so, how interested is she in these items to have kept and displayed them in her home? Was this a reason she was interested in Luz and agreed to teach her magic?

It’s a little hidden by Luz’s hand, but it looks as if there’s an eye with a slitted pupil as a decoration in the center of the couch. HMMM.

The lamp, I’m assuming, is lit by magic, but it would be pretty darn cool if the demon realm had electricity.  

Other notable items; an umbrella, what looks like a small photograph of sorts, or something else in a little frame, an askew corner of what looks like cardboard or paper thumb-tacked to the wall, a cow skull, the thing in a oval frame that King is obscuring, the sword and axe.

I suppose the satchel belongs to Luz; it looks brighter than everything else and has a little purple dinosaur sticker that matches her shirt. I guess this may be her school bag?

Why is King wearing a collar? Is it an identification thing from when he was working/training as a warrior?

I’m so curious about the recurring owls! The frame has an owl on it too. Is Eda known as ‘The Owl Lady’ just because of her staff?

I’m curious about that staff too; Eda holds it here but other official doodles show only Luz with it. I’m guessing that the staff helps her enhance/control her powers, or it’s just a sort of broom, and that she will eventually pass it on to Luz.

Eda reminds me of Pearl for some reason? Just the way she looks, and seems to carry and present herself, coupled with the fact that she’s rebellious and carries a long, stick-shaped weapon. I doubt her personality would match up, though. I think she’d be a bit more like Garnet in that she’ll be hard to impress and powerful, and a bit like Stan Pines in that she will be very sly and deceitful along with wanting to bond with and protect others. Of course, you can’t always describe a character completely in terms of others. She’ll likely be an interesting person nonetheless. I’m looking forward to seeing what she’s like and seeing just how wrong my guesses are.

I have a feeling Luz is going to be a smartass. She looks like a snarky person, but also a little bit of a dork.

I love King already. I’m guessing he’ll be quite loyal to both Eda and Luz. I feel like he’s going to be a sort of younger brother type to Luz.

Other photos of interest, though I’m not sure how official they are;

Luz doing some magic with her hand. I’m wondering again about the magic system; is she only able to do this because she’s holding the staff or because she’s practiced?

Is she reciting a spell or just speaking or yelling while doing magic?

So her staff doubles as a ‘broom’ sort of thing? Interesting!

Please tell he that owl isn’t sentient. I’m hoping it falls more into ‘magic that works like technology’ than it does full on sentience like Aladdin’s magic carpet.

Confirmation that King has two eyes; when I first saw the first two photos, I was worried because his right (?) eye was closed.

They’re eating ice cream here, and again I’m wondering about how technology will work in this show. They had to get this ice cream from somewhere and had to keep it cool somewhere, so it looks like there’s a market for ice cream in the demon realm and Eda either has a freezer or keeps them cold with magic.

Or maybe I’m completely wrong about the premise and Luz is hopping between realities. I’m so worried for this child. Is she going to get home she’s probably been reported missing are her family/friends okay.

There’s...another eye shape on the side of the couch. What. Is. With. The. Bill. Cipher. Eyes.

Eda is unimpressed by tiny demon trying to steal her ice cream. Threatens to light him on fire. I wonder what that little guy is doing there. Perhaps those little creatures are the equivalent of mice.

More evidence for King being a little brother type to Luz! I’ve got a feeling that I’m going to love their interactions! Cuties!

The fact that King is eating ice cream from a cone suggests that they got it in the demon realm. You can get ice cream in a cone prepackaged (like with those drumsticks ice cream) but it’s more common to get it at an actual ice cream store.

Or maybe I’m just over analyzing a couple of doodles for an animated kids show that’s not going to air for almost a year from now. I don’t know what I’m doing. I wrote five pages. Twelve if you include all the photos.

Some plot predictions;

I imagine Luz will be adamant about wanting to learn magic, and Eda will be skeptical about teaching her. I’m thinking they’ll have a bit of tension going into it.

I don’t know where the exact tweet is, but Alex Hirsch described it as ‘making the censors want to quit’. Gravity Falls definitely pushed the boundaries (hard) for the creep factor, but I’ve got a feeling this show will do much worse. I’m looking forward to seeing a deeply unsettling world and some very dark story elements.

I’m sure that all of them will get to be badass together at some point and I look forward to that day.

Just waiting here to see how yet another ‘goofy kid’s show’ tears my heart out. Fun times for all.

It has been a slow(er) couple of weeks here in the Silver State — only one candidate visited, though several more did so virtually — which is good because I traded Paradise, Nevada for a different kind of paradise. I disappointingly did not run into Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who is on active duty in Indonesia for the next two weeks, but have returned refreshed and relaxed. There are 186 days until Nevada’s Feb. 22, 2020 Democratic caucuses. Seize the day, gather ye rosebuds while ye may.

ON THE INDY

School may have started but not at Spanish Camp Kamala: The program, announced last week by California Sen. Kamala Harris’s campaign, is an expansion of an English-language program Team Kamala says has trained 16,000 volunteers. Participants of the Spanish iteration will learn the same things as their English counterparts, including how to organize in their community and lead their precincts come Caucus Day. 

On the importance of the Latino vote to winning Nevada, Harris campaign manager Emmy Ruiz told my colleague Luz Gray in an interview that “no podemos ganar sin ellos” — “we can’t win without them” — which isn’t so much a telegraph of campaign strategy as it is of an immutable mathematical reality in the Silver State, where 29 percent of the population is Latino.

Paint the town blue: Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar was the only 2020 presidential hopeful to attend the annual International Union of Painters and Allied Trades convention at Caesars Palace in person. She spent much of her speech promoting infrastructure expansion, the Las Vegas Review Journal’s Rory Appleton reported. (Appleton said Klobuchar told him in an interview that she is “being cautious with her $7 million war chest” by way of explaining her lack of Nevada staffers, but that she “plans to announce statewide hires soon.”)

Other virtual attendees of the convention: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker. Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams also attended the convention, where she unveiled her new anti-voter suppression initiative, Fair Fight 2020. My colleague Jackie Valley has more.

Culinary Twitter love: Sanders ignited a wave of Democratic presidential candidates taking to Twitter to call on the Palms Casino to negotiate with union workers. The unionization effort represents the latest battle for the politically powerful Culinary Union, which has been engaged in a yearslong effort to unionize Station Casinos properties in Nevada. 

The day after the Sanders tweet, Buttigieg piled on with his support on Twitter and, in the days after that, Harris and Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton did too. (Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro also tweeted his support more generally for Culinary’s parent union, UNITE HERE, though he tweeted a video in support for Culinary workers in July.)

Warren in a video told workers to “keep the pressure on” and that she stands “shoulder to shoulder” with them. (She first tweeted her support for the workers in March.) Others who have previously tweeted support for the union: Booker, Klobuchar, and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

The surrogates come out: California Rep. Ted Lieu and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla were here on Aug. 8 and 9, respectively, for Harris. Lieu hosted a veterans roundtable and APIA community luncheon, while Padilla hosted a house party in East Las Vegas and met with CHISPA activists.

The offices, they have opened: Team Warren opened five field offices two weekends ago in Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, East Last Vegas and Reno. Notable attendees: Assemblywoman Shea Backus in Summerlin; Assemblywoman Heidi Swank in East Las Vegas; former state Sen. Sheila Leslie and Controller Catherine Byrne in Reno; former state Sen. Joe Neal in North Las Vegas; and Clark County School District Trustee Linda Cavazos in Henderson. That brings the campaign’s total number of offices in Nevada up to six, including the team’s Las Vegas headquarters. 

Sanders opened two offices — in Southwest Las Vegas and Reno — the same weekend, bringing his office total to six. Booker’s team also formally opened its first office in Las Vegas on Wednesday. (His campaign manager, Addisu Demissie, was there, as was his mom, who lives in Las Vegas.) Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign tells me they have additional field offices opening soon in the North and the South and a main Northern Nevada office in Reno.

Downward dog for Warren: Team Warren is hosting a series of nontraditional campaign events including political happy hours, a “Knock Down the House” movie night, a girls night wine-down mixer and phone bank, a book club, a yoga session, picnics to “plant plants and discuss plans” and taco-making sessions.

Team Trump news: The Trump Victory Committee and the Nevada Republican Party are hosting an economic roundtable at Ping Pang Pong in Las Vegas on Tuesday as part of a nationwide “Open for Business Tour.” Former Attorney General Adam Laxalt will be there, as will Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald. A long list of current and former Team Trump folks — including acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney — will also speak at Laxalt’s annual Basque Fry in Gardnerville in September.

CAMPAIGN NUGGETS

Staffing changes

Castro has brought on Benjamin Challinor as his Nevada organizing director. Challinor was most recently chief of staff for Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, managed state Sen. Julia Ratti’s campaign and worked for Hillary for America in Reno in 2016.

Biden’s campaign has hired Kayla Johnson as its Nevada digital director and Palak Iyer as its Nevada training director. Team Biden has also brought on a regional campus organizing director.

Team Buttigieg tells me the South Bend mayor now has 25 staff members on the ground and counting, including 18 organizers, four senior staffers, and five mid-level managers. 

Early endorsements

It’s been rather quiet in endorsement land. (Booker was endorsed on Monday by Patricia Gallimore, former president of the Reno-Sparks NAACP.) But remember: It’s still early.

Upcoming visits

Booker, Klobuchar, Harris, Castro and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio will speak at the AFL-CIO convention next week on Aug. 28 and 29 at the Flamingo. (Castro will also be here on Aug. 26 and 27 for other, unspecified events.) I’m told the Nevada AFL-CIO is working with a few more candidates interested in speaking and that the lineup should be finalized soon.

Biden is slated to return to Nevada on Sept. 27.

Giffords and March for Our Lives have now gotten 14 candidates confirmed to speak at their gun safety forum on Oct. 2, one day after the two-year anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas. Those attending include Biden, Sanders, Booker, Buttigieg, Harris, Klobuchar, O’Rourke, Warren, entrepreneur Andrew Yang, Castro, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, billionaire Tom Steyer, and self-help author Marianne Williamson.

DOWN BALLOT NEWS

Blue, blue everywhere, but there was none to drink: Democrat Clint Koble is taking another stab at Republican Rep. Mark Amodei’s Northern Nevada seat. Koble lost by more than 16 percentage points to Amodei in 2018 in spite of the blue wave. Indytern Taylor Avery has more.
