This took me a lot of time to draw and finish... Figuring out which character correspond to which phase, I have to redraw Yuika, Vic and Mick's sketches due to feeling dissatisfied with the pose/drawing, drawing Mayor Cain (Which as Only ONE official art)... Accidentally unifying the lineart with the coloring layer and having to redraw it over it in orden to add the remaining shading...

But it was worth it! My favorite one to draw is Dark Kirisaki, but I laugh at Mick's.

I think I'm slowly involving MMBN characters in my dream. I dreamt about Lan being in an office building(?). After a few months I dreamt looking for Iris but finding Dingo instead. Then last night I had a dream where the characters were at a grocery store and there was this old woman going whooping kids' butts (what?) and even Chaud was running away. Mayl was there too, but the other kids weren't too clear as the dream was pretty dim(?).

yes, u gotta pick.

Why I like them

he’s efficient and disciplined, he stays on-task… and once he pulls the stick out of his rear somewhat, Laika’s a loyal and dependable ally who does in fact care about doing the right thing, even if he’s not that friendly about it. he treats his Navi well and they’re a good team together, even if in the beginning Laika leaned over-much on the ‘you’re a soldier like i am, follow my orders’ aspect when it came to him. he grew out of it.

Why I don’t

UNFORTUNATELY he has the same problem to me as a character that Enzan does, only doubly so: he’s the ‘ace rival,’ take 2 and i don’t personally find that interesting or compelling as a trope. i also disliked that his and Searchman’s de-facto promotion to the third protagonist in the anime came at the cost of basically replacing Meiru and Roll in their slot, and took a lot of her chances at meaningful screentime away. (ಠ_ಠ) that makes me frown… even if it’s nice that the anime gave much more depth to him and it’s not like Laika himself has any say in it, that choice by the writers and the fandom’s resulting tendency to group him, Enzan, and Netto together while leaving Meiru out soured me on Laika’s character.

Favorite season/movie

i liked him more in Stream, and the game version of him is a NPC that turns up only in two of the main games where he’s not given much focus, so by default his appearances in Stream wins. (￣。￣)～

the ones where he’s crooning over that dog of his that he rescued in one of the Axess episodes. thanks for confirming you’re a dog-lover, Laika. that’s relatable.

Favorite outfit

his Cross Fusion form in the anime is pretty cool. it was neat that even if his default attack is sniping from afar, they had the foresight to give him a background in fencing so even if his gun is destroyed in a fight while he’s CrossFused, he’s not left defenseless in close-range combat - he can just instantly switch to a sword chip and keep going. a rare example of the writers thinking a minor detail through.

i have no serious romantic ships for this guy.

despite my grumbling, i do like him, Enzan, and Netto’s interactions as a group. and like most cases, him and Searchman.exe should be partners forever since i think they’re good for each other. their team-up in the Beyondard arc when they’re stranded together sold me on Dingo and him as a friendship. he’s a good straight man to Dingo’s rowdiness. Laika, and the rest of the anti-drug-metaphors cyber power ranger team in general is fun too.

Head Canon

he likes milkshakes with toppings. he regards Searchman as a comrade-in-arms and a sort-of older brother figure. he has a natural gift for operating machinery that preteens/teens probably shouldn’t know how to operate alone, such as snowmobiles and aircraft (according to the movie) as long as he can count on Searchman to handle some of the more complicated technical steering, and that’s part of why he got into the military at such an… implausibly young age.

Unpopular opinion

he would have worked much better if he took the fourth protagonist slot in the anime rather than the third protagonist slot.

may he doomed to getting pestered by Netto and Rockman’s friendly voice calls.
