A/N: I'm just used to writing smut things, but here's something softer. Maybe I'll do a part 2 after Bi Han's betrayal with his brothers and his reign of tyranny, what the relationships would be like, but just maybe.

You were friends with all of them, since you were a teenager. The first to bestfriend you was Kuai Liang, he was always the most communicative of the trio of brothers - he saw you training with other newly arrived ninjas and decided to welcome you into the clan, you were friendly towards him, which Liang was Unaccustomed, he really liked you so he invited you to dinner at one of the local restaurants - perhaps Mrs. Bo's - You really didn't want to bother him, after all, he was the grand master's son but he was extremely simple and humble, even offering to pay for the meal, so you accepted.

When you got there you met the shy Tomas, sitting alone at a table and eating in silence, he got a little clumsy when he saw you - the poor boy had no social interaction skills, he still doesn't have any to this day - so he stays quiet, just watching you talk to the his brother but soon he starts to loosen up more, laughing and talking to you too - and the two of you become closer than you and Kuai -

Over time, you became so friendly with the two that you started visiting their house, meeting their father and mother and being welcomed as their son too, but Bi Han looked at you crookedly and coldly - as he did with everyone - however he began to see potential in you, a future ally and skilled ninja and also you miraculously made him laugh even if a little, it was the beginning of the three of you's friendship.

The only one who didn't wear it was Bi Han - but he kept the bracelet in his pocket, he always put his hand in his pocket and brushed his fingertips against the accessory, smiling slightly behind the sub zero mask, it was good to know that he and his brothers They had you as a friend.

One day, when you and Kuai had no training he let you touch his hair, ending up with Liang with two braids in his hair, Tomas also wanted to do it but his hair was too short to style.

"-You can't do it on mine because it's too short?:(" -Tomas said sadly as he lowered his shoulders in defeat - he let his hair grow after that, just so you could style it - Bi Han said that was nonsense , but soon ended the day with two braids raised with colorful clips, arms crossed and sighing "-I'm only doing this because (Y/N) insisted a lot" -He said, looking at himself in the mirror irritated, it was a lie, he himself had offered to be your hairstyle "model".

When you had a birthday, everyone gave you a gift. Every time you see a kitten in the windows of the tallest houses, Tomas will help you pet them, easily lifting you on his shoulders while Kuai and Bi Han watch, Kuai would laugh at the cute moment while Bi Han would say "-that was silly." but deep down I also thought it was adorable, even if I would never admit it out loud.

One time Bi Han saw you, Tomas and Kuai watching some random cartoon on television, rolling his eyes while giving a lecture about "You're too adults and too old to watch silly children's cartoons." In the end, Bi Han was also sitting on the couch with the three of you and focused on drawing - yes, it was my little pony and he marathoned everything with you that afternoon -

When you went shopping in the city, the four of you would stay on the sidewalk in the late afternoon, sitting on the asphalt curb, watching the cars pass by, with the joke of "that's my car", Tomas would always stay and point to the white ones in the city, Kuai for the red ones and you for the colored ones (which rarely passed), Bi Han just said "this one", pointing to the black cars, it was a silly joke, but you liked it.

When the betrayal happened, you were torn between helping Bi Han or your other two friends Kuai and Tomas.

If you chose Bi Han's side, you would have his approval and pride and as you always believed in your potential to be his right-hand man in a new era of the Liu Kuei, you would be treated like royalty, having respect from everyone, but leaving Kuai and Tomas extremely sad and swearing to themselves that they would rescue you one day from Bi Han's clutches - even if it had been by their own choice -

If you chose Kuai and Tomas' side, they would welcome you with open arms telling you how you would make a new clan without Bi Han's tyranny, but Bi Han would be extremely disappointed in you, even if he masked it with anger and hatred. In his speech, deep in his eyes you would be able to see his pain at not having you around anymore, he would swear to take revenge on his brothers and get you back to the Lin Kuei clan and to him.

warnings: slight angst to comfort in both, established relationship in bi-han's, slight spoilers for mk1 story mode, gender neutral reader

summary: bi-han and tomas vrbada somehow turned into animals! but you have no idea it's them, so you end up telling them a secret... (both separate)

a/n: heyyy so um i had no idea what to write yesterday bc i hated every draft i had but i FINALLY got this one done. idk why but i'm in a phase where i hate everything i write. thanks for your patience guys!

bi-han

bi-han woke up to his bedsheets completely engulfing him. in confusion, he tried pulling them aside, but it barely moved an inch.

“what is this…?” he tried mumbling, but instead it came out sounding like the meows of a cat.

in a panic, he immediately rolled out of his bedsheets and tried to stand up, but his legs weren't strong enough to hold him up.

in fact, he didn't even have his legs anymore. he had little legs and paws.

this had to be a nightmare. there's no way he just woke up as a cat. fortunately, he happened to have a day off. but he still had many questions. why did he wake up as a cat? is this a permanent change?

but he knew there was no need to stress. bi-han needed to chill out. panicking doesn't solve anything. he must find you, surely you can recognize him immediately.

first, he must learn to walk as a cat. walking on all fours felt so strange to him, especially because his new paws were so sensitive to the hard, wooden floors. but he can get used to it for now.

you heard a quiet scratching noise at your door. thinking someone probably just accidentally brushed up against your door, you ignored it. until you heard it again. and again. louder each time.

you groaned, getting up and opening the door to a cute black cat.

"oh hello there! what are you doing in a place like this?" you giggled, immediately picking it up and petting it gently.

the cat purred in contentment, and rubbed its head against your hand.

while bi-han enjoyed the close proximity to you, he still needed to find out how to let you know *he* is the cat you are holding.

"i wonder if bi-han would approve of you wandering around." you sighed.

bi-han meowed as loud as he could, tapped on your chest with his little paw, then pointed towards himself. he hoped you understood what he was trying to say.

"it looks like you're trying to stretch. maybe we can go for a walk?" you offered, setting him down.

'this is gonna take a while.' bi-han thought. for now, all he could do was grumpily walk beside you.

"...and then, bi-han told me he was too busy for a night out. i understand that he's the grandmaster and stuff, but i just wish i could spend more time with him. you know?" you ranted to the cat walking beside you, *still* unaware it was bi-han himself.

he listened intently to what you had to say. it was true, he was very busy most of the time and couldn't spend much time with you. but he had no idea it was affecting you this much. once he turns human again, he'll make sure to fix the problem.

after an hour or so of walking around, you finally got tired and walked back to your home. once you reached your bedroom, you picked up the cat you spent your day with and placed it on your bed.

"i hope you don't have any diseases, that wouldn't be very good for me." you laughed nervously, as you climbed into bed next to the cat.

bi-han looked at you in annoyance and scrunched his little nose as if you just called him something offensive.

"anyways, goodnight little one. i hope we can find your owner tomorrow. if not, i can take care of you! as long as bi-han allows it..." you trailed off. "in fact, i'm really scared of displeasing him.."

bi-han's ears perked up at what you said. why would you be so scared of pleasing him? is he so intimidating that he even makes his significant other frightened?

"i mean, it's not like he's aggressive or anything, i just don't want to disappoint him. i feel like i'm walking on eggshells around him. if i say the wrong thing, he would think i'm unworthy of being with him. sometimes... i'm not sure if he really loves me. if he really loved me, he would put more effort into spending time with me... right?" you whispered, as a small tear escaped from your eye.

bi-han's heart broke a bit when he heard that. he knows that he is a bit.. judgemental. but he never meant to make you feel unloved.

he crawled up to you and licked your tear away. he hoped that it would make you feel a bit better about your situation. he made a mental note to talk to you as soon as he was human again. the last thing bi-han wanted to do was hurt you. even after all the people he has betrayed, hurt, and even killed... you were the only person he never wished to harm.

he cuddled up beside you and made himself comfortable. surely a bit of physical touch would make you feel better? it's not like he has been doing that in his human form anyway.. which he notes to fix soon.

soon you both drifted off to sleep peacefully, with bi-han curled up comfortably in your arms.

the next morning, you woke up to bi-han sleeping right next to you. when did he get there?

“bi-han?” you whispered.

when he woke up, he immediately checked his arms and legs. thankfully, he was human again.

“good morning, beloved. how did you sleep?” bi-han asked, strangely casual even though he magically appeared in your bed.

“i slept.. fine. but i had a cat with me. it was a cute little black cat, it showed up at my door out of nowhere yesterday. it was kind of grumpy, but it listened to me when i ranted to it. it kind of reminded me of you.” you giggled.

“about that…” bi-han sighed. “…i have some explaining to do.”

tomas had invited you to madam bo’s for dinner, and he was planning on confessing his feelings to you there. but unfortunately, he couldn't exactly make it.

he accidentally fell asleep, and when he woke up he realized he was late. he immediately got up from his bed and tried standing up, but he couldn't stand on his two legs anymore. because his legs were now full of fur, and he had paws.

this could not be happening. the first time he gained the courage to make a move and ask you out, he ends up turning into a dog.

he had to find a way to get to you and do something. what if you think he stood you up on purpose?

you were sitting at a table at madam bo's, waiting for tomas to arrive. you get that he's probably busy, so you were being very patient and decided to wait a bit. but you were sitting there for so long, the place was going to close soon.

you were about to get up and leave, until a golden retriever dog ran up to you with its tail wagging intensely.

it didn't have a collar, so it seemed to be a random stray dog that took a liking to you. but it also seemed so well-behaved, how could it be a stray?

tomas was relieved to see that you were still at the restaurant. he felt bad that he made you wait for nothing, but at least that was a sign that you cared about him.

"oh, hello there. what could you be doing in a place like this?" you greeted, petting the dog in front of you.

tomas felt a bit strange getting petted by you, but it somehow felt really good.

"i was waiting for someone, but he never came..." you sighed. "this place is about to close. maybe you can accompany me while i walk home?"

tomas didn't hesitate to walk beside you, but he couldn't help but feel extremely guilty for wasting your time. he'll find a way to make up for it.

"i know he's a busy guy, but wouldn't he know if he couldn't make it today? i kind of got myself all dressed up for nothing.." you admitted, opening up to the loyal dog that never strayed from your side throughout your walk.

tomas's heart broke when he heard how you felt. if only he was human at that moment, he would've been apologizing profusely and trying to make you feel better.

"i really, really like him. i think he's so kind, fun, and he has always cared about me. i was so excited to go on this date with him, because i thought that maybe it was a sign that he liked me back. i'm trying to stay positive and hope that he was probably just busy, but what if he just doesn't actually care about me?" you sighed.

tomas whimpered in response, feeling extremely guilty about hurting you. he never meant to make you feel that way.

"i don't know if you are sad for me or if you're just hungry.. but you're a good listener. you remind me a lot of tomas..." you mumbled, feeling appreciated by your little companion.

once you arrived to your house, tomas felt very creepy. he was walking around your bedroom, looking at the little trinkets you have and sniffing around. he couldn't help it, it's like he had an instinct to snoop around your living space now that he was a dog.

"i'm really tired... stay here, and i'll find you some kind of blanket to sleep on. i have to put on my pyjamas first, though." you said, silently regretting that you wasted such a good outfit to be stood up.

when you returned to tomas, he was still sitting in your bedroom and patiently waiting. you laid out a blanket for him, and then you crawled into your own bed.

"goodnight. hopefully i can find your owner tomorrow, if you have one. even though you probably can't understand me and i'm just talking to myself.." you mumbled, rolling over and going to sleep.

tomas tried to think of a way to make it up to you when he was human again. he felt so guilty for hurting you. he hoped you didn't lose feelings for him, it would make him feel even worse if you did.

the next morning, you woke up and you were expecting to see the same golden retriever from last night sleeping on the floor.

instead, you looked down and saw tomas himself peacefully asleep on your floor, wearing nothing but a blanket over his privates.

you immediately pinched yourself. this had to be a dream. you had so many questions. what happened with the dog? did tomas break in while you were sleeping?

"tomas?" you whispered.

he slowly opened his eyes, and he let out a sigh of relief as soon as he saw he had his regular body back.

but that sense of accomplishment faded as soon as he noticed that he was pretty much naked on your bedroom floor.

"good morning..." tomas greeted awkwardly.

"good morning." you replied, trying to look respectfully.

you both stood in awkward silence for a solid minute before you finally spoke up.

"so.. what brings you here... naked...?" you asked.

tomas blushed. "well..."

"so.. you were the dog from last night?" you questioned.

"yeah. i'm sorry for uh.. you know, turning into a dog and accidentally leaving you alone on that date." tomas apologized.

"did you hear everything i said last night?" you said quietly, embarrassed that you practically poured your heart out to him without knowing it.

"i did. i am still so sorry that i hurt you. i'll make it up to you, i promise. i'll take you out for dinner again, but i'll show up this time. and i'll pay the bill!" he offered.

hell yeah, free food. who could resist that? you instantly agreed to his offer and you had hope that the date would go well this time, and then maybe you two can become something more.

"great! i'll go get ready right now!"

First time writing for Smoke so I hope I did well!

Summary: Originally brought into the Lin Kuei as the reader was arranged to marry Bi-Han, they learn that he is not the man they thought him to be and when he goes off the deep end, the reader seeks help from someone in the Lin Kuei that they have true feelings for…

Being arranged to marry Bi-Han of the Lin Kuei, I thought this new chapter of my life would be the beginning of many good ones.

That turned out to be far from what I expected. Bi-Han wasn’t exactly the lover that I was looking for.

Although he became grandmaster and I was soon to be his spouse, he had business to handle with Lord Lui Kang and I had no knowledge of what exactly was going on.

Not till Bi-Han returned, claiming his brothers Kuai Liang and Tomas were no longer a part of the Lin Kuei, and that he’d no longer be working with Lord Lui Kang.

Any question I had, he didn’t answer, told me that it was none of my concern.

Bi-Han wasn’t exactly the man I dreamed of being with my entire life. I already doubts in the past and this was my breaking point.

He must’ve forgotten that I was a highly skilled martial artist like himself. One night when he finally rested, I snuck out, needing to find Tomas.

I learned that he and Kuai were making their own clan, the Shirai Ryu, and looking to take down Bi-Han and restore the Lin Kuei.

There was so much I needed to get off my chest and I knew I could do so with Tomas. Out of their entire clan, I bonded with him the most and I knew that he’d help me.

It didn’t take me long to reach the Shirai Ryu’s minka, stumbling upon a beautiful garden full of red trees, lit in the night by lanterns.

“Y/N?” Tomas’s voice alone had me ready to burst into tears, running to him, “What are you doing here? How did you find this place?”

“I’ve been following you, but it’s not what you think,” I said quickly, fighting tears and running out of breath, “I can’t stand Bi-Han anymore. I can’t take it. I don’t want to marry him. I don’t want to be in his Lin Kuei anymore.”

“Y/N, breathe. Try to calm down,” Holding my shoulders, trying his best to comfort me, “Are you-“

“I’m positive and mean every word I say, Tomas. You don’t know him like I do and just how terrible he is. I don’t want to go back. Please-“

“Shh, it’s okay,” He whispered, pulling me into a warm hug, “I believe you.”

His hug was everything I needed and more, my tears slowed and after some deep breaths, I didn’t feel so weak and brittle anymore, answering his question from before:

“I have been doing work of my own while Bi-Han has been gone. That’s how I found this place. So I could come talk to you.”

“Showing off your skill I see,” He smiled while rubbing my back, trying to raise my spirit, holding up my head some to connect a gaze, growing serious again as he asked, “I know you’re upset and dealing with a lot right now, but everything you said, you’re sure that you mean it?”

“Tomas,” I breathed in deeply, failing at fighting my tears as I confessed, “He’s never loved me. The only thing that kept me there was you, b-because, I love you.”

I didn’t realize at first how big his pupils expanded, my heart pouring and continuing to confess:

“You’re the one who always made sure that I was okay, spent time with me, made me feel special, instead of treating me like some object. I’m sorry I waited till now to tell you. I was just so scared of Bi-Han and now he’s completely lost it and I didn’t know who else to go to.”

“It’s okay,” He breathed, thinking and pulling back into his hug, his whisper making me cry silently, “Im so glad that you came to me.”

The tears wouldn’t stop coming, shaking as a chilled wind blew past us in the garden, but those shakes coming to halt as his embrace grew a bit tighter and warmer, his voice helping me ease down:

“You don’t have to worry about Bi-Han anymore. You never have to go back. Never.”

“I don’t know what I’d do with you,” I whispered, looking up from his shoulder as he whispered back:

“Don’t trouble yourself thinking about it. I love you too much to let you go back to that monster of a man.”

Johnny & Kenshi's "Relationship" in MK1

Well before MK1 was released, Ed Boon had this to say about Kenshi (and Johnny) and their roles in the story:

I was incredibly interested in this "relationship" from that moment and really hoped that it would pay off like he said. I think it has done so tenfold, and I wanted to compile their moments throughout the story together and go through their relationship arc, moment by moment, chapter by chapter, for everyone to enjoy.

This post contains spoilers for both Kenshi and Johnny's roles in MK1, as well as major plot points of the story itself. You have been warned!

Chapter 2: Their First Meeting

The climax of Chapter 2 is the back-to-back events of Johnny’s wife, Cristina, leaving him, and Kenshi entering soon after. Kenshi is here on a mission: retrieve Sento from Johnny, no matter the cost. They fight, and Johnny wins. It’s here that they introduce themselves properly (or Kenshi introducing himself to Johnny), and Johnny learns more about his motives and why he needs Sento so badly. He does so to save his family, the Taira clan, from the Yakuza, which they joined for protection after the Siege of Aomori, according to Johnny.

Soon after, Liu Kang, Bi-Han, and Kuai Liang arrive, where Johnny thinks that the trio is a part of Kenshi’s retrieval mission. After Johnny and Bi-Han fight, Liu Kang tells both Johnny and Kenshi about their new role as Earthrealm’s champions. Johnny openly questions Kenshi’s inclusion, still hardly believing his story about being part of the Taira clan. The chapter ends here.

We know from here that Kenshi and Johnny openly do not trust one another and likely hate one another. For Kenshi, Johnny is the one thing in the way of his goal of saving the Taira clan from the Yakuza. When arguing with his wife, Johnny reveals that he paid 3 million dollars for Sento; considering that their impending divorce is over money, it makes sense that he is not willing to just give it to some stranger.

Chapter 3: Bickering

Johnny and Kenshi do not have many scenes in Chapter 3, with most of its focus being on Raiden, but the few scenes they have show us a lot about the state of their relationship. The four Earthrealm champions—Johnny, Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Raiden—discuss their circumstances and their training with the monks. Johnny expresses his desire to see Outworld to do research for the movie franchise that he hopes to make; according to him, they’ve been “cooped up” training for months. Kenshi sarcastically calls him selfless, and Johnny states that he’s only there to get Sento back, indirectly stating that they’re both only training for selfish reasons. Johnny also harshly calls him “Tattoo” as a nickname, not even using his last name as Kenshi does for him.

When Johnny is defeated by Raiden in the mini-tournament set up by Liu Kang, the two glare at one another while Johnny exits the fight and Kenshi enters. The scene is adorned with dramatic music (relating to the tournament at hand) and a slow-motion shot of their expressions. The choices here are likely to emphasize the disdain they have for one another and the insane amount of tension they have between them.

That night, before Raiden and Kung Lao fight, Johnny attempts to bet on Lao’s potential victory. Kenshi is open to a bet, but only if Johnny puts Sento up for grabs. Johnny laughs and says, “Not on your life,” revealing that he has not budged on his desire to keep Sento after all this time.

They have a brief scene when the group leaves for Outworld where Johnny starts filming Kenshi. Kenshi turns with an annoying expression and knocks his phone out of his hand, much to Johnny’s shock. This scene is the last they have in this chapter that has any real significance, minus standing by one another.

The few scenes they have in this chapter show that their relationship has not improved since they met a few months prior, even after spending every day together; if anything, it has gotten worse and more openly hostile. They judge one another’s reasons for being champions for Earthrealm and still do not respect one another.

Chapter 4: More Fighting & Kenshi’s Blinding

We play as Kenshi for the duration of this chapter. The two of them, alongside Kung Lao, are tasked with finding Shang Tsung for Liu Kang to question. Kenshi openly questions Johnny's inclusion on the mission and openly states that he would prefer Raiden to go along with them instead of “this one,” making it known that he does not value Johnny as a fighter or a teammate. Johnny protests and insists that he’s up to the job of finding Shang Tsung. Before they depart, they glare at one another once more.

When out in the Outworld desert, Kenshi and Johnny begin to bicker once more. Johnny brings up the 3 million dollars needed to buy Sento and tells Kenshi that he would likely have Sento back in his possession if he were still with the Yakuza. Kenshi turns around quickly to yell at Johnny about the corruption that the Yakuza spreads and his desire to get his clan out, all while shining his flashlight on Johnny’s face.

After meeting Baraka and ending up in Shang Tsung’s laboratory, the three of them ambush Rain, Tanya, and Shang Tsung in an effort to save Mileena from what they believe is a Tarkat infection. Johnny makes the “get away from her, you bitch” reference that it feels like everyone has seen, much to Kenshi and Lao’s visible confusion.

Kenshi defeats both Tanya and Rain in battle, and he briefly speaks to Mileena before her illness makes itself known. It is here that Kenshi does something he’s not done all of the story: he calls Johnny by his first name instead of just “Cage.” He asks for a hand in fighting Mileena, and Johnny hurries over to help. Johnny asks about a plan, and Kenshi states that the only real plan is to not hurt her. Johnny is visibly shocked and says that he’s more worried about “us” getting hurt than Mileena.

They fight Mileena, and Kenshi and Johnny win. Kenshi asks Johnny and Lao (again calling Johnny by his first name) to hold Mileena down so Shang Tsung can administer the serum needed to subdue her Tarkat symptoms. They do so briefly, and she eventually knocks Lao away and goes to bite Johnny’s face. Instead, Kenshi comes from behind, grabs Mileena by the straps of her outfit on her shoulders, and pulls her away, saving the life of someone that until just minutes before, he has been shown to hate.

Then Mileena shoves Kenshi away just long enough to grab a pair of sai from a nearby table and gouge Kenshi’s eyes out. His blood sprays, and Johnny is hit in the face with the splatter. In the horror of the aftermath, he yells Kenshi’s first name for the first time, nothing short of terrified and worried. The chapter ends soon after this.

This chapter is the official shift in their relationship. This chapter is when both characters finally refer to one another by their first names, though it is all we see of any sort of genuine appreciation of one another. Kenshi calls Johnny by his name in the midst of immediate danger; he needs Johnny’s help, and he’s visibly frightened in the scene itself. Johnny calls Kenshi by his name in the aftermath of the danger, when he just saw someone that he’s known for months lose his eyes in the most vicious way possible (and gets hit with his blood in the process). The shift is not seen until later chapters, but Kenshi going blind while saving Johnny’s life is the catalyst for the change.

Chapters 5 & 6: New Bonds

In Shang Tsung’s laboratory, the first thing Johnny does when he wakes up is check on Kenshi. He says his first name again, asks him about his pain, and states that he will not forget that Kenshi saved his life for the price of his eyes.

Johnny himself is the one to give Kenshi his blindfold, torn from his own armor and placed over Kenshi’s eyes with his own hands. He is the one to give him the medicine and relieve him of some of the discomfort from his blinding in his own way. Johnny is the one who adds to Kenshi’s iconic character design; it’s forever associated with him and his kindness.

When they’re finally able to escape the laboratory, Kenshi asks Johnny and Lao to leave him behind. Johnny refuses and wants to save Kenshi’s life. Kenshi tells Johnny that he is “useless” and that their lives do not need to be risked to save him. (He once again calls Johnny by his last name here, instead of calling him “Johnny” like he did hours before.) Johnny insists that the Taira needs him, and they’re going to get him back home and get him help.

They walk through the Living Forest together near the back of the group; Johnny is the one who guides Kenshi around. Johnny continues to look back at Kenshi as they’re walking around to make sure he does not trip or stumble. He makes a remark about a movie he did that Kenshi reveals that he has seen before. Johnny comments on how difficult the scene was to shoot, but he is proud of the outcome. Kenshi says that he can “picture it exactly” and smiles for the first time since his blinding, a strong contrast to his earlier depressed state.

They continue until they meet Ashrah and debate whether or not to hunt Quan Chi. When Kenshi steps forward to go, Johnny firmly tells him no, citing that they need to get him home. He’s visibly annoyed and perhaps even frustrated when Kenshi insists that they need to find Quan Chi to find Shang Tsung. In the end, Johnny is the only one opposed to continuing their mission.

The penultimate moment of their development is the scene at the end of the chapter in which Sento is returned to Kenshi. Kenshi tries to fight Quan Chi, and Johnny is quick to tell him no, stating that Kenshi will trip up the others. He then asks Kenshi for his sword, and Kenshi hesitantly agrees. Johnny does what was previously established as impossible and gives Sento back to Kenshi. Kenshi is stunned, and then he tries to reject Sento. The one thing he has wanted for all this time, the singular reason that he hates Johnny in the first place, he tries to reject it. Johnny insists that it’s Kenshi’s now because he saved Johnny’s life. “It’s yours,” he says, and he means it.

Chapter 6 largely focuses on the fight between the group and Quan Chi, but it’s the chapter in which Kenshi’s sight is “restored” with the help of his ancestors. After a fight with Ermac, Sento is imbued with the souls of Kenshi’s ancestors, who promise to help him. He is then able to sense his surroundings in a new form of sight, allowing him to fight as he did before. He also discovers his telekinesis soon after.

Johnny and Kenshi have a brief exchange about Sento after this. Johnny jokes that he severely underpaid for Sento when he bought it and asks if Kenshi knew what it could do, which he did not. Johnny tells Kenshi not to forget who gave him the sword; Kenshi promises that he will not. They go back to calling one another by their last names, but instead of earlier in the story, when they were distant from one another and not friends, the use of last names here almost feels…kinder. Maybe even affectionate? Like calling a friend by their last name instead of someone that you dislike.

These chapters are what solidify their bond. It starts with Johnny’s worry and concern over Kenshi’s well-being and safety, something that continues through the rest of the chapter. He checks on him in the dungeon, he is the one to give Kenshi medicine when he knows he’s in pain, and he motivates Kenshi to continue living when they leave the dungeon (and makes it known that he will help him however he can once they get him home). He makes it known that he’s willing to give up on Liu Kang’s mission, something that could potentially save Earthrealm, for Kenshi to be safe after losing his eyes. It’s one of the first things that Johnny clearly takes seriously. Until this point, he makes jokes about almost everything, but when it comes to Kenshi going home, he’s all serious and makes his opinion on the matter known.

Their conflict regarding Sento is also resolved here. Just hours before this chapter, Johnny brings up the 3 million dollars he paid for it and his unwillingness to part with Sento unless Kenshi gives him the money. However, after Kenshi saves his life, Johnny gives it to him to potentially repay a debt. Kenshi essentially traded his eyes for Johnny’s life, and Johnny recognizes the importance of such a sacrifice. To him, giving him Sento is likely only the beginning of what he does to repay him for what he did.

Their value in Sento differs greatly. Kenshi wants Sento because of the value it has to his family and their well-being. While Johnny seems to appreciate Sento’s history, the sword is still something with monetary value and something that helps Johnny “project” a celebrity image to fans. He is his possessions; he is what he spends money on. But Kenshi’s blinding makes him realize, in the worst way possible, that some things are more important than money.

These chapters (4, 5, and 6) also show Johnny and Kenshi saving one another’s lives. Kenshi physically saves Johnny from Mileena in the laboratory by pulling her off of him before she can bite his face off. Johnny emotionally saves Kenshi when he’s at a low point following his blinding; he is the one to motivate Kenshi when he calls himself useless and asks the others to leave him behind, even if it means certain death. Johnny also helps save the Taira clan by willingly giving up Sento, something that he knows means a great deal to Kenshi and the rest of his family.

Chapter 15: A New Arc in Their Lives

The pair make a lengthy absence until the later chapters of the game, and they are not seen together again until the final scene of the final chapter when they are eating at Madam Bo’s restaurant. They’re sitting together on the same side of the table while Johnny talks about the location of his movie. He turns to Kenshi with a smirk when he laughs, and Kenshi assumes that Johnny will be the star of his franchise, as he always seems to be.

Johnny then asks Kenshi to be in a movie, stating that no actor can do things quite like Kenshi. Kenshi openly admits that he would love to, but his work with the Taira keeps him busy. (However, we see in Johnny’s ending that he still involves himself in the movie-making process.)

Liu Kang moves to leave for Outworld, and Johnny stops him to thank him for bringing them on as Earthrealm’s champions. He quickly glances at Kenshi before stating that joining him has truly changed the arcs of their lives, just like Liu Kang said it would.

This final scene with them is just the beginning of those new arcs. Compared to their first meeting, Johnny and Kenshi have found a new respect for one another and a bond forged in a shared adventure and what looks like conflicting goals. By this chapter, they have undergone an entire arc of their own, and their lives are changed by one another as a result.

Their new arc is only beginning.

‘For the love of god. What have I done?’

Here you are. Trapped in the most rancid environment you have ever seen in your damn life. Blood and guts drenched everywhere, rats feasting on molded food. Screams of terror echoed throughout the halls, and all you could do was wondering how you got here and how to get out. Your head was throbbing and screaming in pain from your fainted rest, and nothing ever where you were was going to help. Your entire body was screaming in pain, and your back and legs hurt.

Your senses was drunk on the environment and you felt like throwing up. Your sight was blurring and the ringing in your ears was deafening. You felt around yourself to feel for your weapon, but it wasn’t there..neither was your clothes? You opened your eyes fully and looked at down your torso. You wore just a big shirt that was covered in dirt, and no pants. Just your undergarments. You’ve been stripped of your valuables. You groggily stand up and start walking before falling on your face. “Ah fuck!…” you said in pain as you held your now bleeding nose. You caught a rattling sound when you fell and immediately looked at your feet.

Chains were wrapped around your ankles and was attached to the wall. “Oh great…”

You pondered as you searching around the area you were in. You were clearly in a cell, where several bodies had been tortured and killed.

‘What…am I doing here?’

Oh now you remember. You were facing Titan Shang Tsung and his minions with Fire God Liu Kang.

You were fighting Evil Titan Kitana and Mileena while Liu Kang and Good Titan Kitana fought the others?

Sounds about right. In fact, you were fighting Kitana last as Mileena had already been put in her place. However, just after Geras revived the Hourglass, Kitana had kicked you down and aimed for his head. You had drunkenly kicked Kitana and you both fell into Shang Tsung’s portal as Liu Kang shouted for your name. He warned you about fighting in a drunken state, and has offer to teach you without being so intoxicated. Now you’re here in this dump. You can only assume that it’s the wretched home of that stupid sorcerer. “Great..now what?”

You pulled your legs to your chest before yanking at the chains. You knew you were strong enough for these chains to break with your bare hands. But there was something weird about them. They appeared to be bonded by a green magic. “Still…it’s worth a try.” You said as you raise your hand in a two finger sign before a deep smooth voice spoke.

“That won’t work.”

You jumped in place , readying your stance instantly and he smirked. Shang Tsung. How grand. “You! You won’t get away with this!” You stare in down in malice as you pull on your chains once more. He chuckled and walked closer to the cell bars observing you, before looking you in the eye. “I find your demeanor truly interesting despite how you ended up here was your fault. I was delighted to see that you fell right into my portal. Now I have a reason for Liu Kang to approach me with everything he’s got..and will lose.”

You practically wanted to kick that smirk right off his smug face. Every bone in your body was just shaking with anger, but you took in a deep breath before giving him your coldest look. “What do you want from me? Why haven’t you killed me yet?”

He slowly walked to the cell lock before using magic to open it. You watched him with alert and tensed yourself as he walked closer to your frame. It was unbelievable how tall he looked. Maybe it was his stature, how overwhelming his presence was now that you are alone. Like a predator staring down it’s prey. Your nerves were high but so was he. It was like a aura threatening to crush you. It wasn’t until he leaned down did you begin to suffocate.

“I plan to experiment on you. I think you’ll be a valuable asset to me. As long, of course, you can corporate.”

You snarled with a little boost of confidence and energy. “Liu Kang will find me! When he does, he will make sure you’re 6 feet under!”

In response to your rudeness, Shang Tsung smirked even wider. He looked you up and down before tilting his head and shrugging. “Well that is precisely what I hope for, darling. I hope he comes for this poor damsel in distress…so I can kill him and his foolish Earthrealm era. Destroy his entire timeline…and you’ll be there to watch. Your pathetic little soul…will be here. Do not worry…You’ll get the chance to say goodbye to your friends and family at their graves.”

He said all of that with nothing but a smug smile. Anger overtook you and you spat right in his face. Finally…his smirk was wiped from his face. Now he can wipe that spit off as well. You plastered your own kind of smile before groaning as he gripped your hair and slammed your head into the wall. He then picked you up by your locks again and you felt a hit across your face. You could barely register what happened before being thrown on the ground, and screaming in pain from a sharp three-pointed object being stab into your leg. You couldn’t see him, but you can feel the anger radiate off him.

“What a misbehaving little brat. You’ll learn to obey soon enough. Maybe with a little bit of…training. Pray that your “god” comes saves you, y/n.”

Before you can try to catch a glimpse what just happened, you heard your cell slam close and your vision blurred to a darkness.

It’s been 4 days since you’ve fallen to your demise. You haven’t seen the Titan himself since he crushed your skull into a wall, but others who’ve u fought and lost to. After you beaten four guards to death, double the number would come and beat you again. You would’ve died at this point if it wasn’t for the chains that miraculously healed you slowly. It was clear that Shang Tsung wanted you to suffer and not get a honorary death in the slightest. He wanted you to submit to him, infect your soul and mind…before claiming you. You underestimated Liu Kang’s warning about him. All you could think of now is why hasn’t anyone come save you. You try your hardest to suppress these thoughts—you couldn’t let Shang Tsung get into your head. You had to try another way…maybe to help Liu Kang find you. You knew the only way to even get close to escaping…is if you corporate.

So that’s what you did. After what seemed like weeks, you were beginning to corporate. It started with little submission—and you were rewarded with food and water. After 2 days, you were rewarded with a shower and a change of attire. You were able to tidy yourself up.

You couldn’t understand why the sudden change of your behavior would have you get anywhere closer to luxury. Compared to the rest of the held hostage, you were receiving everything you needed and more. Shang Tsung was being odd at the finest, he would even send you things that you never asked for, and you have yet to still seen him since that day.

Eventually, you forgotten about being saved. To you, it was clear that Liu Kang wasn’t going to save you anytime soon. Your plans of escape had disappeared throughout time, and your feelings of bravery was depleted. All you felt was loneliness and regret. For trusting your life in someone else hands, for being such a failure, and for being so close to dying. Now you are stuck under the thumb of another Titan..who you feel is no different than Liu Kang. To you, you were still imprisoned either way.

“Don’t think so hard darling.”

You slowly pulled your head up at a face you haven’t seen in a while. He didn’t change at all. He seemed to be in a very luxurious kimono. It was ridiculed with golden snakes at the hem, his chest was visible and his hair seemed just slightly wet. You couldn’t remember the hour, and if he was here on a later time. You didn’t care, his face was the most interesting thing for these past months.

“Your fate was already decided for you since the start of your existence.”

You noticed his face wore a look of slight discomfort and smugness. He didn’t have his weapons this time..in fact he looked comfortable compared to the other times you’ve seen him. Even his new era self wasn’t compared. It took you a while to finally look him in the eyes and close your legs to your chest.

“Go ahead. Gloat about how he hasn’t came yet, and tell me how much of failure this all became. You’ve gotten me to corporate. Let it boil and simmer while you’re at it.” You look away from him to a wall where your marks can be seen on it. You carved each day that pasted, and even carved escape routes you could have took. All a waste of time. You heard your cell unlock before hearing his light footsteps approaching you and his shadow look over you. “While that would be all too pleasing…I’m here on a different task.”

You froze and held your breath as you felt your chains being unlocked and falling to the side. You finally peeled your gaze from the wall to him who was staring down at your ankle wounds. It seemed to be the only thing that hasn’t healed compared to the rest of your marks. You jolted slightly as he rubbed his finger over the wounds before hearing him chant. You watched as a green glow appeared over your ankles and healed your wounds quickly. You felt your throat get dry as you looked from your ankles back to him. He was still looking at them before flickering his eyes to you with a smug smile. “While I am a Titan, I do have propriety. You’ve behaved well.” With that he stood before exiting your cell with the cell door wide open. Your body moved on its own—standing up fully before tightening your hands.

“So what, you expect me to just walk out?!”

Your voice was louder than you anticipated and it echoed loud enough. You were surprised that your voice returned after 8 months. He turned slowly with a calm look and held his arms behind his back. He didn’t hold a smirk or anything of his usual. His eyes however…held a playful look. You couldn’t understand why he was playing games with you. Throughout of all the things you’ve been through with his shit…he lets you go with no reasoning?

“Why are you letting me free?”

He motioned outside of the cell and bent his stature over a little. “Is this not what you wanted? To escape and run to your Fire god? I have no use for you anymore. My experiment is concluded.”

‘Experiment concluded…?.’

He took in your frozen and confused posture and walked to you. He was tall just as you remembered. His aura was crushing you, and his presence was overwhelming still. However, your nerves were not on high alert. They were surprisingly calm and his look was far different than the predatory one he had. You couldn’t tell what it was, but you no longer felt threatened by it. He looked over you and brought his face closer to yours and played with the jewelry he had given you over time. Your breathing was staggering and you felt a heat in your stomach. It was uncontrollable and he knew that.

“Of course…that’s if you want me to continue to experiment on you dear.”

Suddenly, you can feel that heat travel to you lower region. Your eyes were slightly wide and a blush creeped up your face. You were confused and angered on why that statement made you so…uncomfortable! What else could he possibly mean?!

He scoffed at your confusion and backed away. That warmth was fading away as he got further from you, and before you knew it your hand grabbed the bottom of his sleeve. You were confused why you felt this way…that if he left, you’d be back to square one. The problem was you couldn’t tell if it was the past you desperate to escape this hellhole to anything he pleases…or if you actually wanted his attention. You just missed his apparent shock on his face for a millisecond before his demeanor returned to his usual one. He gripped your arm forcefully and pushed you back, before walking away.

“You are free to leave. Although, if you do stay…do be useful.”

There you were again. In the middle of your cell…broke and battered up. Well, internally at least. You felt like you were being dumped. Your eyes followed the open cell along the hems till you eyed the lock.

….

Slam!

It didn’t matter anymore. You were free! After 8 1/2 long months of torture, beatings and suffering..you were finally free. You ran as fast as your legs could take you down the hall. They sounded the empty dark hallway, and your breathing was heavy. You got the sharpest corners until you were in the middle of a foyer room. You frantically searched around, huffing out small breaths before you eyes laid upon a large door.

“Outside!”

You ran as fast as you could not looking back whatsoever. You can feel a ping in your heart of nervousness and wonder, ready for any fight that might be ahead of you.

…but that didn’t happen.

You instead found yourself frozen at the locked doors to the outside. Your hand hovering over the golden knob in fear. You did nothing but stare at them as sweat ran down your temple. Something inside of you was whispering, aching and pulling you back. No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t put your hand fully on those door knobs.

“Well. What are you waiting for?”

That voice again. That stupid fucking voice again. You turned around swiftly and banged your fist against the doors. You were fuming. Your face was red, teeth gritted and eyebrows arched. Veins were viable on your forehead, and arms. It even shocked the sorcerer himself.

“WHY DO YOU KEEP PLAYING GAMES WITH ME?! You captured me!! Put me through endless suffering with your shenanigans and infuriating guards! Spoiled me with harmless gifts and knicks knack! Like a fucking pet!! You had them beat me into submission!! And now you’re setting me free?! WHY?! IS IT BECAUSE YOU KNOW I HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO?? IS THAT IT?!! YOU KNEW LIU KANG WOULDN’T RISK EVERYONE ELSE’S LIVES FOR JUST ONE! SO WHY NOT?! Maybe that’s why you said I could stay. Cause I am just fucking HOPELESS, AREN’T I?”

You were just about on the verge of tears. Your voice was gone from yelling at the sorcerer. You couldn’t make any other sound but choking sobs. Your cheeks burned and your head was aching. All those 8 1/2 months had finally caught up to you. Those feelings that he left you alone with..that Liu left you alone with. Those feelings that were the reason why you were drunk 24/7…forcing yourself to create a martial art for survival as your feelings threatened your urge to live. Those feelings of your gone family and clan..your soon to be child gone. A forced sick, and abuse marriage you remember. A marriage that ended on that same day when New Era Shang Tsung rid them of their lives.

You ignored them, and honored Liu Kang with every breath he “gave” you…but you knew that he was a time keeper. You knew that it was his fault..yet and still you buried them with each bottle you drank. Each bottle given you a fight..a obsession. For that damn sorcerer…you hunted Shang Tsung with such a passion. It was like he too was the only reason you urged on to live. Maybe you wanted him to end those terrible feelings..and now you were pouring them all out in front of him. The heartless sorcerer.

He couldn’t do anything but stare. You really were..hopeless. All that was sounded was your sniffles and soft sobs. You looked down even further and let go of the door handle, letting your arm fall to your side.

“Well you’re right. I am. None of this shit matters anymore.”

Not another word came out from the sorcerer. You wouldn’t dare meet his gaze either to signify him to say something. You just let your feet drag you past him and wiped your tear stained cheeks.

“Y/N.”

You tensed at the seriousness in his voice and slowly turned to him. It sent shivers down your spine. That overwhelming aura was back…This time it had flattened you completely. You couldn’t help but swallow in fear. He still had his back turned to you, and you can see his weapons attached to his arms. He rose them slowly and took them off one by one and let them fall to the ground. You winced at the sound and slowly looked from them to see he’s turned fully around towards you. You were just as close like last time. He had his neck bent down slightly to your gaze this time to look you in the eye softly. You swallowed again, and held your breath. You felt like you were going to fainted right then and there before he slowly intertwined his hands with yours.

“Please understand..that I only did this to you..so you can return to me, my love.”

‘…..my love?’

He held your hand firmly and led you to a different door. You were speechless and afraid. You were holding hands with the maniacal sorcerer who just called you his lover. He was leading you down a well lit hallway. You felt a tightness in your throat and looked down at his hand. He was surprisingly warm and delicate . His hand lacked calluses, but they were still present. Like…they were hiding his own struggles. He held a firm yet comforting grip to your small hand. It…felt nice.

He then stopped to open a door. You almost melting on time to where he had taken you. The room was full with bookcases and neatly stacked shelves. A nightstand with wine glasses and a large bed was neatly made with the finest silk you’ve ever see . The room was decorated with beautiful dragons and snakes displays and the smell of woods, slight citrus and leather filled your nose. This was clearly his large bedroom…and it made you even more nervous.

He let go of your hand before walking to a beautiful wardrobe and pulled out something from the very top shelf. You stood there like a shy animal steeping into unknown territory. You felt like you were about to be taken down, and not in a good way. You backed up slightly before tripping over and falling right into the door. He perked his head up and you froze instantly. Of course your clumsy self run into the door, cause why not? Shang Tsung turned back to you before walking towards your small frame and setting something into your hands slowly.

You looked over it slowly and squinted. It was a picture of you…but you looked different. You were much cleaner and nobler. You had your hair fully grown and you were practically glowing…Like you never drank a inch in your life. However, what was more noticeable was the jewelry that “you” had worn…

It was the very same jewelry that Shang Tsung had given you overtime in confinement.

“Open it.”

You looked at him slightly, seeing that he hasn’t moved a inch. You shakingly try to open the frame slowly, and pull the backing off. You popped it too far apart and the picture falls on the floor. You chuckle at your own actions, before glancing at Shang Tsung—who didn’t seem too amuse with your performance. It made you wince internally and shy away down to pick up the picture.

‘Wow. Get a grip Y/N…it’s only a picture of you…nothing too crazy.’

You noticed the picture was folded and dense, and something was scribbled on the back. You didn’t bother to read it, as curiosity had overcome you with the folded picture. You slowly peeled the folds away and held it fully together.

….

‘No…this can’t be…’

You held the photo up to the light nervously and covered your mouth slightly. You felt yourself tear up once again and your ears started to ring. Everything around you was blurred out of your vision but the picture…

The picture of you with a slightly older Shang Tsung…who was holding your hand softly as he stood over you. His hand held a ring on his marriage finger…and he was holding your hand..which also had a beautiful ring on your ring finger. The very same temple that you stand in today, was the same temple that was in the background.

“Y/N…we must talk about..the previous you. MY Y/N…”
