Laocoon's Children follows Harry through his time at Hogwarts as he develops a very different group of friends: Hufflepuff Draco Malfoy, Ravenclaw Padma Patil, and Gryffindor Neville Longbottom, strange companions for a Harry who was sorted into Slytherin -- the house of his beloved Professor Snape.

This universe ends in Harry's third year, and is partially incomplete. As it is not likely to be finished, the last story in the series is a group of notes I made on where the story would have gone and how it would have ended. (443.3K)

Like a witch’s lair in a fairytale the ancient manor house crouches at the end of a muddy waterway, tangled in reeds. I can’t take my eyes off the ivy-choked window far above the front door. It was from that window in 1944 that 26-year-old Christopher Flack fell to his untimely death, his skull shattering on the cobbled ground below in what appeared to be suicide.

We’ve all heard of the Penhaligon clique. We’ve all marvelled at the tales of eccentric dinner parties and exotic guests - and gone on to shudder at the tragedy that followed. Why did the young footman, mysteriously raised far above his station, come to throw himself from the top window? Why have the house’s guests never spoken about the rumours circling before the incident? Why was the eldest Penhaligon sister put in an asylum? Why won’t the youngest reveal the truth?

The Misses Penhaligon

It is strange to think that until last year the Pengaligon sisters were unknown except in the sleepy Cornish hamlet of St Carantoc. Locals can recall the eldest. Miss Morgan Penhaligon as a charming, elegant socialite, rich in the wake of her father’s death and much respected among the upper circles of London and Paris - until one summer’s day in 1952, of course, when her younger sister put her in a mental institution.

As for the younger, 65-year-old, Elaine Penhaligon,  everyone describes a different version of her. 

“Typical old lady, unhealthy devoted to that house,” her daughter, Lyra Marrack, tells me in an exclusive phone interview. “I’m afraid she went quite batty after Dad died a few years back.”

“Miss Elaine hated her sister,” mutters a yokel in the Broken Sail Inn. 

“She walks the cliffs on stormy nights,” says another. “Thass summat we nivver does.”

“I heard that small dead animals have been found hanging from trees,” says a third.

Whoever the real Elaine Penhaligon is, she is now the sole inheritor of Creeks End House upon her sister’s death - and perhaps the only one left who knows the truth. 

Aside from the two sisters, there were five guests in the house that night. Elaine’s soon-to-be fiance, George Marrack, a London businessman whom she married a few years after the incident. A young theologian from Cambridge, Caleb Thomas, and an ex-army officer, Captain James Cartright, both of whom retreated into obscurity. Then, the most mysterious guests, two members of the Russian aristocracy - a Mr and Miss Belinksy, of which next to nothing is known. 

Whatver the case, Elaine is now the only remaining witness that can divulge the truth behind that fateful night.  She spoke briefly to the police when they came to recover the poor footman’s body, then never again. It was only upon her sister’s death last year that the press dug up the story, caused a sensation and the rest is history. 

It was not so much the eccentricity of the happenings in the old house of Creeks End but the mystery and the rumours. Rumours of witchcraft and devilry plagued that house, rumours that may have faded with time but remain just as poignant upon their rediscovery. 

So what really happened on that night of 19th July 1944. That’s what my book intends to solve.

Extract chapter One: It was one of those swelteringly hot days without a breath of wind which was unusual, to say the least, in a Cornish field so close to the edge of the cliffs. It was even more unusual for someone to be pushed off these cliffs and end up on the sandy beach below, but that is what happened… Kate Palmer had spent a very sticky afternoon at the village summer fair, in her nurse’s uniform, tending to cuts, bruises, one bee sting, one nosebleed and a plethora of minor wounds requiring sticking plasters. She’d been a practice nurse in Tinworthy for the past three years, during which time she’d made a name for herself as something of an amateur supersleuth due, in no small part, to being married to retired Detective Inspector Woody Forrest. Today Kate was in charge of the first-aid tent, assisted by a young volunteer called Carrie. This was the Tinworthy Summer Fair, where everyone came along to peruse the stalls selling all manner of goods; to eat, drink and to take part in the various games and competitions, like welly-throwing, coconut shies and to try to win prizes on the hoopla stalls. All the proceeds were going to local charities. This was an event frequently rained off or that otherwise had everyone huddling under cover to dodge the Atlantic gales. But not this year. Although, in retrospect, Kate might well have wished that it had been rained off.

The Author: Aged 18, Dee arrived in London from Scotland and typed her way round the West End for a couple of years before joining BOAC (forerunner of British Airways) in Passenger Services for 2 years and then as a stewardess for 8 years. She has worked in Market Research, Sales and at the Thames TV Studios when they had the franchise. Dee has since relocated to Cornwall, where she spent 10 years running B&Bs, and only began writing when she was over 70! Married twice, she has one son and two grandsons.

A full day today, so an early start as soon as the Special K was consumed. Strolling down to Victoria Quay to catch the 10.15 Rottnest Express to well, Rottnest Island, it was noticeably cloudy and cooler despite a very muggy night. This is a 30 minute fast boat ride across 18km of quite choppy water from Freo. Just to make it a really grand day out, we were blessed in sharing our rust bucket with what seemed to be the contents of at least 2 teenage boys schools. The crew very wisely placed all those who had no obvious connection with the testosterone charged conglomerate on a separate deck. It was like a male St Trinian's outing.     

Rottnest (Rotto as the native Aussie would say) or Wadjemup as the Noongar people would call it, or "place across the water where the spirits are" is an A-class reserve, the highest level of protection afforded to public land in Australia. There is evidence that the Aborigines have had a connection with the Island for possibility up to 70,000 years. A long time. Europeans first appeared on the Island in 1831 just 2 years after the Swan Colony arrived on the mainland and 2 men, William Clarke and Robert Thomson received land grants for town lots and pasture land on the island . Within 2 years someone had the idea that Aborigine prisoners could be held on Rottnest, so without thought of the insult to these peoples, 6 convicts serving sentences for murder, theft and assault were duly parcelled up and shipped across. Within a very short period of time, all six escaped in Robert Thompson's own boat and 5 survived back to the mainland. However, despite this small hiccup, it was decided that Rottnest should be used as a prison for Aborigines, and between 1838 and 1931 over 3,700 were shipped there, and by all accounts kept in the most appalling conditions in the prison the Aborigines built for themselves. It is a very pleasant island with sand dunes on a bed of limestone and inland salt lakes. The coastline is rugged and at West End resembles a Cornish cove. The island has no private vehicles and the most common means of transport is the bicycle which can readily be hired. We opted for the hop on, hop off bus for which we negotiated an age concession with the ticket machine. Very good value as it circumnavigates the whole of the island and the driver points out the places of interest for you. Our first stop was at West End, the furthest west you can go, where New Zealand seals and Sea Lions swim beneath the cliff top viewing platform. Were it not blowing a gale, we might have lingered here a bit longer. Hopping back on the bus we stayed on until we reached Geordie Bay where there was a convenient coffee shop, and at that point the clouds parted and the sun came out as it is supposed to in this part of the world. The island has a permanent population of 330 people and a huge population of Quokkas, a small marsupial found in very few other locations. They are very cute and are clearly very used to the human influence and can spot a sandwich at 60 paces.

The original Settlement at Thompson Bay still has original buildings including the Church and Quod (prison) built by the Aboriginals plus a number of auxiliary stores all dating back to the mid 19th century. The government now has a number of initiatives to re-build good relations with the Noongar people as the shameful history continues to impact them to this day. These include recognising the unmarked Aboriginal graves as important to them and respecting the areas where they are. The problems are deep and the island has been bombarded with activities far removed from the peaceful and spiritual use the Aborigine made for it. In its short European history it has been a Prison, Boys Reformatory, Internment Camp in ww1 and ww2, a Military and Gun Emplacement during ww2 and now tourists flock to it on a daily basis. Not really the place across the water where the spirits are.  

A very good day out, and a 'must see' if in the Perth/ Fremantle areas. We had circled the island twice and stopped at various places on route and then caught the ferry back to Freo followed by a visit to a fish emporium for a seafood platter. Very nice it was too.

In many ways the communities on the Lizard are the most isolated in Cornwall. As wild and as sparsely populated as Bodmin Moor the peninsula has an added sense of otherness and seclusion that comes perhaps from being encircled by the untamed sea.

In the early 19th century the Lizard was notorious for its lawlessness. It was a renowned haunt of highwaymen and footpads (the name given to bandits without horses!) And an isolated area of the downs near Landwednack was home to a band of notorious thiefs and sheep rustlers.

The Old Lizard Windmill

We are getting used to seeing the white blades of today’s modern wind turbines on the horizon but there was a time when more traditional windmills dotted the Cornish countryside.

They were mostly stone built structures with wide wooden cloth-covered sails to catch the Cornish winds. Some were used to power the pumps used in mining and others for grinding corn. Usually they were found in places where wind power was a better option than water.

Although always rarities in the county there are more than 50 known windmills sites in Cornwall. But in most cases all traces of those mills has vanished completely. However, a handfull do still survive. Windmill towers can still be found at Maker, Fowey, on the Isles of Scilly, at Padstow, St Minver and near Landwednack on the Lizard.

There’s even a little book about them, packed with fascinating information, Cornish Windmills written by H. L. Douch published in the 1970s.

The Lizard Windmill

The Lizard Windmill, which stands near to the Lower Predannack Downs, was built about 400 years ago. It was a manorial mill used to grind corn for Trethevas Manor and was in regular use until 1840. Built entirely of Serpentine block it had three storeys and a thatched, and then later a slate, conical roof.

It was originally known as the Mount Herman Mill and appears as a landmark on most maps of the area. It is marked on the famous Lanhydrock Atlas of 1695 as ‘the Old Mill’, leading to the belief that it was built in about 1600. Another map c1770 depicts the ‘Old Windmill’ with the tops of the walls already crumbling and some rather tattered sails still in position. It was possible that the Lizard Windmill was used in times of water shortage to protect the Lord of the Manor’s milling rights and it is described as being in working order in 1828.

When those sails finally disintegrated completely isn’t clear but by the mid 19th century the mill was deserted and being used as a store.

A Gang of Miscreants

The area around the Lizard Mill is said to be haunted. As recently as 2000 the local farmer reported his animals behaving strangely. He had planned to use the old mill house as a shelter but his stock became agitated and point blank refused to go inside. Some put the atmosphere here down to dark deeds committed around 200 years ago.

For several years past, the district of Meneage, and the neighbourhood of Helston, have been infested by a gang of thieves, who have carried their system of plunder to an extent which has been seldom if ever equalled. Scarcely a farmer but what has been robbed; and such has been the terror in which they have been held, that they chose rather to submit to be robbed with impunity than run the risk of an unsuccessful search, which would have brought upon them the vengeance of the miscreants. – Royal Cornwall Gazette, February 1829.

The isolated mill was the hideout for the notorious Windmill Gang in the 1820s. This band of robbers, footpads and sheep stealers terrorised the area. And were probably murderers to boot. Local legend has it that a field near to the windmill is the final resting place of the unfortunate Oliver Tucker. Tucker was murdered by the gang when he foolishly threatened to give evidence against them.

The Last Days of the Windmill Gang

In 1829 the Lizard Windmill was the scene of a rather strange incident reported in the local papers. Four prize rams were stolen from Mr Silvester, a farmer near the town of Helston. The police, who probably already had an idea of who the perpetrators were, undertook searches of premises in the villages of Grade and Landwednack.

Henry Harris, Alexander Hocking of Grade and James Jose, of Landewednack were singled out. At Jose’s 82 lbs of mutton, cut up in small chunks and salted, was found, hidden in a ‘bed-tye’. At Hocking’s, a bankrupt butcher, two legs and some skins were found. Both men were arrested and Hocking soon started informing on his friends. Armed with his confession the police then went on the hunt for Stephen Jose, brother of James, William Harris, and several others.

After a fruitless search for many hours, a hue and cry was raised, in which about forty persons joined, to search the cliffs, in some of the caves of which they were supposed to have concealed themselves. Mr Andrew, the active constable of Helston, so disposed of the party as to cut off all retreat. On crossing the open common near Kynance cove, Stephen Jose and William Harris were discovered and identified. Although at a great distance. A chace immediately took place, and finding their retreat towards the country cut off by two young men (farmers) called Hosking and Hendy, they made towards the sea. Hosking arrived on the beach just in time to see them plunge into the water. He called and begged them not to drown themselves, but they paid no attention to his entreaty, and after swimming about twenty minutes they were seen to sink, and rise no more. – Royal Cornwall Gazette, 1829

The men’s bodies were never recovered. And many locally believed that the men, who were expert swimmers, were merely evading arrest by hiding in one of the sea caves they were known to use. In the coming days several other members of the gang were arrested. Although only Jose and Hocking were ever actually charged.

The Windmill Farm Nature Reserve

Windmill Farm Nature Reserve is managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and covers roughly 185 acres.

The Trust has numerous small reserves around the county and this one comprises of grassland and heathland as well as a bog and some ponds. The varied habitats, together with arable crops, provide lots of opportunities for bird watching. The adult marsh fritillary butterfly can also be seen here on the wing from spring to mid-summer.

By 1965 the roof of the old mill house had been blown off in winter storms and the building was in serious need of preservation. Fortunately Cornwall Wildlife Trust was able to purchase the land and the mill with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Lewis Forst Memorial Fund.

Lewis Frost was a botanist, born and bred in Norfolk. He developed an interest in the Lizard area of Cornwall in the 1950s. Frost’s passion for the area lasted the rest of his life and he would visit the Lizard two or three times a year. In 1956 David Coombe and Lewis Frost published a paper on the heaths of the Cornish serpentine. Frost raised considerable funds for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and was actually made an honorary member.

Visiting the reserve

Apart from the Lizard Windmill the reserve contains some old farm buildings, one of which is used as an information centre and dedicated to Lewis Frost. There are also some Bronze Age barrows and Second World War pill boxes. (The windmill tower found another incarnation as a look out tower for the Home Guard in the 1940s.)

These days, after extensive restoration, visitors can climb the windmill for wonderful, expansive views across the Lizard landscape. There is also a self-guided walk and some fascinating information boards.

Above all the Windmill Farm Nature Reserve is a secluded and unusual place to discover. A great place to take in the quiet of the heath, watch the wildlife or grazing cattle and absorb the peaceful atmosphere. As long as you don’t believe in ghosts perhaps!

Parking is limited, I tucked my car in the wide entrance to the lane that leads to the reserve.

*Note: there are no dogs allowed on the reserve and LOTS of adders sightings in the summer months.

Botched IRA call led to Birmingham pub bombing deaths, jury finds

Families of the 21 victims of the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings demanded their killers are brought to justice after an inquest found they were murdered by the IRA. 

Two massive detonations caused what one witness described as ‘pure carnage’, ripping apart the packed Mulberry Bush and Tavern in the Town pubs on the night of November 21 1974, killing 21 and injuring 220 more.

A Provisional IRA member had made a call to the Birmingham Post and Mail around 8.11pm on the evening of the attacks, but the first bomb went off just seven minutes later.

An inquest jury today found unanimously that the warning call was inadequate and the victims were unlawfully killed. 

Speaking afterwards, Julie Hambleton, who lost her older sister in the bombings, said: ‘We now demand of Dave Thompson, the chief constable of West Midlands Police, to tie his shoe laces, black his shoes and go out and do the job because we’ve heard new evidence that two of the murderers are out there.

She demanded officers ‘communicate with the police in Ireland, the police in Belfast, the PSNI, and bring those responsible finally to justice.’

Ms Hambleton added: “Twenty one of our loved ones went out one evening to meet friends and family and they never saw the light of day again.

“Today the inquest has found they were unlawfully killed by murder.”

“Whilst the police officers of the day can’t be questioned in any great detail there is no way that the people of this country and the people of our community of Birmingham and our families, will allow the senior police officers to get off with letting these murderers, two of whom are still alive, get away with their continued liberty.”

The jury also found there were no failings, errors or omissions by West Midlands Police’s response to the bomb warning call.

Leslie Thomas QC, representing 10 of the bereaved families, said after the verdicts: ‘We just hope, in light of the jury’s unequivocal finding that the IRA murdered 21 innocent people, that the West Midlands Police will now redouble their efforts in terms of those bombers who may still be alive to bring them to justice.’ 

They also found there was no tip-off to the force, giving advanced warning the blasts were going to happen.

Following the verdicts, Sir Peter Thornton QC said: ‘The atrocities of the night of Thursday 21 November 1974 are now etched in the history of Birmingham.

‘Those dreadful events will never be forgotten because the people of Birmingham will never forget the 21 lives that were tragically lost.’

He added: ‘I wish to express my condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones in these terrible bombings.

‘I wish to express my admiration and respect for the dignity in which you have conducted yourselves during the difficult time of the inquests.’

The inquests, at the civil courts building in Birmingham, came about after years of campaigning by relatives of the dead for a full account into what happened that night. 

The pub bombings were the deadliest post-Second World War attack on the British mainland, until the 7/7 London terrorist attacks in 2005. 

The conclusion to the inquests comes after an ex-IRA member gave evidence in which he named four of those behind the attacks and gave the nicknames of two others, apparently with the blessing of IRA leaders.

The anonymous witness, himself a convicted bomber, said Seamus McLoughlan was the commander of the Birmingham IRA at the time and selected the targets, while Mick Murray and Michael Hayes were part of the bombing team and another man, James Gavin, was involved.

During the inquests, Michael Hayes was named as one of four IRA terrorists behind the 1974 Birmingham bombing. He is the only one of the four still alive. He apologised for his role in the attack on TV in 2017, but is reportedly protected by the Good Friday Agreement

Murray, McLoughlan and Gavin have all since died and the man, named in court only as ‘Witness O’, claimed that Hayes has protection from prosecution following the peace process. 

But the witness was accused of protecting another man previously linked to the bombings, Michael Patrick Reilly, who is also still alive. 

He added that two other men, who he identified as ‘Dublin Dave’ and ‘Socks’ had also been involved, but that he did not know either man’s name. 

In 1975, six men – the Birmingham Six – were convicted over the blasts but acquitted 16 years later. The attacks remain Britain’s largest unsolved terror crime.  

An IRA atrocity and 44 years of heartbreak for victims’ families

Thursday, November 21, 1974: Bombings in two Birmingham pubs leave 21 dead and 220 injured. They are said to be revenge for the death of IRA member James McDade, who blew himself up trying to plant explosives in Coventry. Hours later, five men are arrested in Heysham, Lancashire, and a sixth is arrested in Birmingham.

November 24: Patrick Hill, Hugh Callaghan, John Walker, Richard McIlkenny, Gerard Hunter and Billy Power are charged with murder.

June/August 1975: Trial at Lancaster Crown Court. ‘The Six’ are sentenced to life imprisonment.

October 1985: TV’s World In Action questions forensic tests. A book is then published claiming three unnamed men were behind the bombings.

January 1987: The home secretary refers case to the Court of Appeal. The appeal is later dismissed. A 1990 TV drama then names four ‘real’ bombers.

March 14, 1991: The Six are freed by the Court of Appeal after 16 years in prison.

October 1993: Perjury case against three former West Midlands police involved in the charging of the Birmingham Six is dismissed.

June 1, 2016: Senior coroner for Birmingham rules to resume the inquests. The original hearings were not continued after jailing of The Six.

September 29, 2018:  Families lose their legal battle to name those responsible for the bombings in the inquests  

February 25, 2019: The inquest into the 21 deaths opens in Birmingham.

March 22, 2019: IRA member names Seamus McLoughlan, Mick Murray, Michael Hayes and James Gavin as the bombers.

April 5, 2019: Inquest finds the victims were unlawfully killed and a botched IRA warning call contributed to their deaths.

Who were the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings?  

The victims in the Mulberry Bush pub, in the base of the Rotunda, were:

– Trevor Thrupp, 47, and a rail guard was a married father of three, who loved taking his son and daughters on holidays to Sandy Bay in Devon and Great Yarmouth.

He had an ‘infectious’ laugh, loved Laurel and Hardy, The Goons and especially Spike Milligan.

‘His love for his family is still with us today and always will be,’ his son Paul Thrupp said.

– John Rowlands, 46, was a qualified electrician and worked as a foreman at Land Rover in Tyseley, Birmingham.

A married father of two sons, he served with the Fleet Air Arm in the Second World War, and the Mulberry Bush was his favourite pub.

His youngest son Paul Rowlands remembered him as ‘a bit of a card, a joker’ and a ‘good dad’, while his oldest child Stephen said they lost ‘a great friend’ when he died.

– William Michael ‘Mick’ Beasley, 30, was a stock controller at a motor company, whose father had died four months before the bombings.

He led a quiet but full and active life, collected coins, and had a keen interest in film and cinema.

Mick owned an 8mm camera, and was a regular in the projector room of the Odeon in New Street.

The night of the bombing, the wife of the Mulberry Bush landlord, Mary Jones, recalled he had found a lucky Cornish pixie charm on the night bus into town, and gave it to her.

She survived the bombing, and told how she had kept it ever since.

– John Clifford ‘Cliff’ Jones, 51, was a railway station postal worker, and a father-of-four.

As a soldier with the Durham Light Infantry in the Second World War, he survived being machine-gunned in combat in 1945, and spent weeks convalescing in a Carlisle hospital.

He was a keen gardener and the Cliff Jones Memorial Trophy is still awarded to Birmingham’s best kept allotment, his son George Jones said.

Mr Jones said his father was ‘ cruelly robbed’ of the chance to live and see his family grow.

– James Caddick, 56, was a porter at nearby Birmingham markets, a divorcee, and father-of-two.

A Mulberry Bush regular, Mr Caddick was stood with his friends, Mr Bodman, Mr Thrupp, Mr Rowlands, Mr Beasley, and Mr Jones in their usual spot at the end of the bar – just feet from where the bomb was planted.

– Father-of-three Stan Bodman, 47, an electrician, was ‘larger than life’ and ‘very popular’, his son Paul Bodman said.

An ex-RAF wartime serviceman, Stan told his son there was nothing to fear from IRA bombs, as they were not ‘military or political’ targets.

‘We certainly got that wrong,’ he said.

‘The carnage of that night will never be forgotten and as a family we hope the inquest will finally bring some answers to what really happened on that devastating night,’ added Mr Bodman.

– Charles Gray, 44, was a mechanic at British Leyland in Longbridge, and had never been in the Mulberry Bush before the night the bomb went off.

He never missed a day’s work, and those who knew him said he had ‘an easy charm and a slight air of mystery’.

His family said he was a ‘lovely, quiet man’ and a ‘gentleman, mild-mannered and agreeable’, always known for being well-dressed.

– Pamela Palmer, 19, was an office worker, who used to take her three-year-old niece shopping.

Her older sister Pauline Curzon said: ‘She was a lovely sister. She helped me in numerous ways.

‘Her companionship and kindness is a memory I treasure.’

She was there with her boyfriend, Derek Blake, who was in intensive care for days afterwards and lost a leg in the blast.

– Walking past and caught in the blast, outside, were Paul Davies, 17, and Bruce Lee fan, Neil ‘Tommy’ Marsh who, at 16 years old, was the youngest victim.

Mr Marsh’s cousin, Danielle Fairweather-Tipping, said Tommy and Paul had a ‘very strong’ bond, and enjoyed the ‘carefree life’ of teenagers.

She said: ‘His death has been a devastation to our family and words really can never explain this.’

Mr Davies supported Aston Villa, was ‘a massive Bruce Lee fan’ and had already earned his karate black belt before his 17th birthday, son Paul Bridgewater said.

It was the son he never got to meet, as he died three months before Paul was born, but ‘I feel his spirit still lives on it me’. 

– Thomas ‘Tom’ Chaytor, 28, born in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, was a retail assistant at Willoughby Tailoring and part-time barman.

Adopted as a child, he was a divorcee and father-of-two, who three weeks before the bombs had started a job on the bar at the Tavern to earn extra money, his then fiance Susan Hands said.

He died of his injuries on November 27, a week after the blast.

– Maxine Hambleton, 18, was a shop assistant at Miss Selfridge in Lewis’s department store, in the city centre.

She was a ‘beautiful soul’, her sister Julie Hambleton said, and died not knowing she had been the first in her family to earn a place reading law at university.

– Jane Davis, 17, who had her eyes set on being a nuclear physicist, was with her co-worker and close friend Miss Hambleton in the Tavern in the Town when she was killed.

She and Miss Hambleton had gone on a coming-of-age grape-picking holiday to the vineyards of France earlier that year, and she sent a postcard home describing how ‘my back is bloody killing me’.

Her family remembered their ‘loyal’ and ‘much-loved’ daughter, sister and friend, who had the chance of being a mother and a wife ‘taken from her’.

– Anne Hayes, 19, was another retail assistant working at Miss Selfridge, who was in the Tavern that night.

She lived with her parents, and had been an apprentice hairdresser, before taking up retail.

– Marilyn Nash, 22, was a supervisor at Miss Selfridge, and was out with her friend, Miss Hayes when she died.

– Eugene Reilly, 23, was a Deep Purple and Black Sabbath fan and his younger sister Mary recalled seeing him play air guitar to his LPs in the lounge of the family home at weekends.

Shy, but ‘very sociable’, he a was a keen roller skater, and went to the rink several times a week.

He was out with his married younger brother, that night, in the Tavern.

– Desmond Reilly, 21, had invited his brother into the city, to celebrate news his wife Elaine was pregnant – though he would not live to see his son’s birth.

Their family said: ‘Eugene never had the opportunity to get married and have children, and Desmond never got to meet his son – part of us died with them on the day they died.’

– Stephen Whalley, 21, was a quantity surveyor in town on a date arranged through the New Musical Express (NME’s) lonely hearts club page.

In a statement read to the inquest, his elderly mother said: ‘While I would love the world to know about my son Stephen, and the lovely young man he was, it is just too difficult and painful for me to recall any memories I have because it is too traumatic to remember.

‘Stephen was our only child, who had his whole life ahead of him.’

– Mr Whalley’s date was Lynn Bennett, 18, a punch-card operator, and the two died together in the Tavern in the Town.

She was ‘very petite and looked great in miniskirts and platforms’, her sister Claire Luckman said.

A passionate Birmingham City Football Club, her grieving father never set foot in the ground again after her death.

– Maureen Roberts, 20, was a wages clerk at Dowding and Mills, and was due to be engaged to her boyfriend, Fred Bromley.

An only child, with a ‘happy-go-lucky’ side, she also had a caring nature, buying Christmas presents for neighbours.

Mr Bromley said she had striking auburn hair, ‘the colour of gold, when the sun shone on it’.

‘Everyone would remark on it wherever she went,’ he added.

– James ‘Jimmy’ Craig, 34, was an automotive plant worker and keen amateur footballer who once had a trial with Birmingham City Football Club.

He was the last victim of the bombings, dying on December 9, 1974, of injuries he sustained in the Tavern.

Jimmy Craig, who could neither read nor write, was only in the pub that night to meet a girl who had written to him, making the arrangement.

His brother, Bill Craig, said he would never have been at the Tavern, had the letter remained unread but his brother had asked their mother to read it for him.
