I sometimes see people wondering when Reiko died exactly and how old her daughter was at the time of her death, but we do, in fact, already have a little bit of an answer to this in canon.
Now this is something that is only implied, but in the very first chapter of the manga, during the conversation Natsume has with Nyanko-sensei the first time he reveals his true form and right before our first Reiko flashback, we have this line (that was cut off from the anime):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[NATSUME: She [Reiko] may not have been able to relate well to others... Not many people even remember her, since she died so young. Not even her own daughter...]
[NATSUME: 確かに祖母は人とうまくつきあえなかったらしい 彼女を憶えている 「人」はほとんでいないんだ 娘だった母でさえ記憶にないくらい若くして亡くなっていて・・・・・・]
This is the official English translation, while the fan translation has this:
"There aren't that many people who remember her. She died so young that even my mom, her daughter, probably didn't remember her..."
This leaves some more uncertainty in the phrasing, but the meaning is basically the same. The original Japanese, "母でさえ記憶にないくらい若くして亡くなっていて" is a bit closer to the fan translation in a literal sense, except in Japanese there is no "probably"; Natsume sounds pretty certain his mother didn't remember Reiko.
So, if "not even her own daughter" remembered Reiko, it's fair to assume that she must have died when Takashi's mom was still a child, and a really young one at that.
(I suppose you could maybe make an argument that Reiko could have still died when the daughter was older, but then something happened that made her forget? But that doesn't seem likely to me.)
Now, this was the very first chapter written 20 years ago, back when NatsuYuu still wasn't supposed to become a long series with much of an overarching narrative, so maybe it's something that could change later. Midorikawa has definitely retconned some details in her story before. But for now that's still one of the only crumb of information we have about this.
Which, if this is correct, then it's very sad because that means Reiko only lived with her daughter for a handful of years at most and never even got to see her grow up. And given we know the grandfather wasn't around and Reiko was a single mom, then the daughter probably spent most of her childhood without her parents, and barely knew anything about either of them (or, well, nothing at all in the father's case).
Which also begs the question as to who raised Reiko's daughter after her death then. We knows Reiko had no family, and no one know anything about the grandfather, so there was no relative, even distant ones, to look after her like with Takashi.
Did she just end up in the foster system/an orphanage, or did someone specific took care of her? If so, does that mean there was a person close enough to Reiko that would have taken care of her child like this? Did the daughter just carry the Book of Friends with herself all this time? Did she knows what the Book of Friends even was, or anything about her mother's abilities? During the eastern forest arc, Takashi says that his mother didn't have any spiritual powers, but then again he never met her or know anything about her at all, so who knows how much that can be true.
Regardless, there's something particularly tragic about the idea that each generation of the Natsumes grew up as isolated orphans who barely knew anything about their family.

Natsume Week 2022
Day 1 : Lost/Found
Day 2 : Comfort/Security
I kinda combined prompts for the first two days when interpreting this one. NatsuYuu portrays found family beautifully - a lonely Natsume finds his place in the world after he moves in with the Fujiwaras, meets Nyanko Sensei, and makes both yokai and human friends! The world of yokai he so feared and tried to stay away from as a child, becomes his safe space. He made the world that was so unfamiliar to him, his comfort and safe space and found himself along the way :)

I finally caught up with the manga and I just wanted to thanks you guys for all the work you do!
The pottery village arc was so good, I’m such a sucker for characters trying to protect each other + angst so seeing Natsume so worried about sensei really made my day. We all know that Natsume is pretty apprehensive about the people/youkai he loves and we also know that sensei is aware of how important he is to Natsume but I think in these chapters he really came to the realization that Natsume:
• really (like, really) worries about him
• is ready to put himself in danger to protect him (even though he’s one of the most powerful youkai in the series and doesn’t really need protection)
Is not the first time we see Natsume being worried about him but I do think is the first time we are shown sensei being so aware of it (i.e: when Natsume thanked Natori and Matoba for helping them while hugging him, when he tried to make sensei stay safe and hidden, when he scolded Natori for doing the paper spell and almost blowing the book of friends too but Natori told him that he’s the one who should be careful and what would Natsume do without him…) so I just can’t help thinking what will happen to sensei when Natsume won’t be here anymore. He always acts all tough (he’s a tsundere after all lol) but I’m sure it won’t be easy for him to let go. I hope both of them live long, happy lives and that we get too share their adventures for a while longer.
Sorry for the rambling, I needed to get this off my chest. I hope we get more angsty Natsuchou in the future and thanks again!
Don't worry about rambling! I enjoy getting these kinds of ask—it's nice. That said, I love thinking about Natsume's mortality and how it'll affect the youkai he's come to befriend (this is not sarcasm). What can I say? I'm a big sucker for angst, and I've always gravitated towards stories that explore death and grief. NatsuYuu often explores that since youkai-human relationships often end tragically or bittersweetly at best. So there's no doubt Natsume's passing will hit Sensei hard as it will for the members of the Dog Circle.
By the way, since you mentioned catching up, I feel inclined to say but isn't going to be a release this month! For reasons such as I'm giving my cleaners more time to work on their respective chapters, and I'm tired. We're going to release chapter 107 sometime in June, though!

YOKAI: Since you hate men, please make me your shiki. Hey, Nanase.
TAKUMA: You're popular as usual. NANASE: For God's sake... They're all fooling around, just because Matoba isn't here. They may be imitating women, but they are all bothersome monsters.
—Volume 21, Special 17.
It's funny that sometimes I think saying Nanase is canonically a lesbian is reading too much into it given the only evidence we have is One scene that's just subtext and coding (and okay her wearing that suit, that's a very soft butch gay suit. And then there's her fascination for Reiko but I don't think that really counts, and that's mostly developed in the anime sadly), but then I reread that moment from Special 17 and I'm like. umm. Midorikawa what was the purpose of that scene if not to tell us she is Very Gay lmao
I just love the implication that apparently Nanase being a lesbian is such a widely known fact within the exorcist community that yokai literally take the appeareance of women to flirt with her. Like okay. Even Takuma coments that she's "popular as usual," which granted he's just teasing her about the yokai flirting with her here but still. What's your history Miss Nanase 😭 Do you think when she was young she was a ladykiller who went around seducing all the female exorcists so that's why she has that reputation lol
Also I'm kind of mad about how the official English translation did that specific scene:
Tumblr media
YOKAI: We don't like men. Won't you please make me your servant? C'mon, Nanase.
Like. At least they still come off as flirting with her, and yes, the original Japanese can be a little ambiguous — but honestly that's pretty clear the yokai are not talking about themselves but that they're talking about Nanase.
Tumblr media
YOKAI: 男は嫌いなんだよう だからさあ 式にしておくれぇ ねぇ七瀬
"Otoko wa kirai nandayou" make little sense to translate it as "WE don't like men"... They're clearly talking about Nanase disliking men here, especially within the scene's context given what Nanase says next? She basically states that those yokai took the appearance of women to "fool around [with her]," so what would be the point of doing this if not because Nanase "hate men"?
It pisses me off a little, like c'mon. I don't really think it was deliberate but that's still annoying because it does somewhat change the gay subtext. At least recently they still kept Shinobu's flirting with women intact so I hope that was still some unintentional mistake on their part but well.
I hope the new anime season adapt this scene properly too and that the sub/dub don't mess it up (the anime do tend to give Nanase a lot of screentime so I'm curious about how they'll adapt this tbh.)
