New project: Movement (15/01/2024)
We've been given a new project brief, movement. As usual, I started with a small mind map and decided on doing about the Natural Hair Movement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to try to focus on the different issues (texturism, dreadlocks, maintenance, length, styling) found within the movement as well as just make art about my own hair type.
Tumblr media
Some artists which I found really interesting were Nikki Nelms, Widny E. Bazile and Taiba Akhuetie. The way they use their hair as an art form had me thinking quite a bit. I can't do anything intricate with mine at the moment but just seeing these women gave me some ideas.

I’m extremely confused by something I managed to find in relation to Jess and her “clients” that she manages. The last verified thing I can find that she somehow got credit for was in 2022.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this V Magazine thing she’s credited as Nikki Nelm’s manager. Nikki isn’t the model, by the way, she’s the hair stylist. Which makes even less sense since isn’t Jess supposed to be in celebrity management?
Tumblr media
The woman in the hat here is Nikki she’s not the model. Nothing wrong with that but I’m still confused. Does Jess manage celebrities or does she manage hair stylists who work with celebrities?
Tumblr media
If you look at Nikki’s account and the type of work she’s getting without Jess it would seem she doesn’t even need Jess to do anything for her. She also doesn’t tag Jess.
Tumblr media
For instance, on this shoot Jess is credited as being Nikki’s manager but Nikki in her post for this shoot did not tag Jess. Nor did she tag Ice Studios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Nikki is styling people like this with a much wider audience, Jess isn’t getting her these much larger jobs or clients and then when Jess does get her work she never tags Jess and Jess always tags Nikki’s work to Ice Studios which has nothing to do with what she’s posting. It also seems that Jess thinks she can steal anything Nikki does because she knows her and just repost it to tag Ice Studios when she definitely didn’t get Nikki these jobs nor does Ice Studios have any involvement with anything.
As of now I can track down that she has three clients and the most recent verifiable work she’s gotten for anyone (a hair stylist not a celebrity) is 2022. What is Jess’s actual job again? Yes a celebrity hairstylist is a job and a talent but a celebrity hairstylist is also not a celebrity. Just because Nikki styled some hair for a magazine that Jess has nothing to do with doesn’t give her the right to steal the magazine and then give credit to ice studios (or whatever she’s doing tagging them on those posts).
Bottom line here is:
If Nikki is still her client she’s not a celebrity. She’s a hair stylist. If Renell and Quil are still her clients they are based out of New York and never see her. Even if they (for some reason still pay her) she represents three people, maybe, and there’s also no way to really verify this since other than following her back and liking some of her posts it’s not clear what work she’s getting them (if any). Renell is a photographer (not a celebrity or model) same with Quil (think he does some modeling though). Is she making her money off of three clients? She doesn’t even seem to get them full time work or the really good jobs they do manage to get.
She also still takes credit for people she managed when she was with Donna Management but she doesn’t manage anymore and really the majority of them weren’t big names to begin with. Can anyone explain how this makes any sense because I’m lost.

“Be patient with yourself. Keep going. Things will work out better than you have imagined. You’re probably all over someone’s mood board...and don’t even know it!”
Thanks to queen and hair genius Nikki Nelms, an artist “with a comb and a dream”, for these empowering words… and believe us, you are all over our mood boards! Nikki created these fantastic looks for Allure.
