October 3rd’s probably the party’s darkest hour, and yet it’s when everyone shines the brightest. They’re the best, and I love them. 

Renfield gets tempted, but he throttles Dracula to protect Mina. Before he dies, he confesses everything to Seward and Van Helsing, down to his ugliest moment. 

Mina is in agony. She’s been violated, cursed to serve her worst enemy, and she’s terrified. But she keeps going. She rallies everyone, urges them to keep going, not give in to despair. And she has the guts to pity Dracula. Monster that he is, she gives him her sympathy. 

Van Helsing talking down Mina’s suicide. He assures her that she’s not alone, they’re not going to abandon her, and they’ll save her. This is not her fault, she does not need to die for the caprice of the wicked, and she will get better. He dares her to fight Death, and he knows she will win. 

Jonathan saying to himself that if Mina is cursed to a terrible fate, she’s not going through it alone. He’ll be right beside her.

Art I made after my first reading of Dracula earlier this year, particularly inspired by one of my many favorite quotes:

"It interested me, even at that moment, to see, that, whilst the face of white set passion worked convulsively over the bowed head, the hands tenderly and lovingly stroked the ruffled hair."

Listen, the Harkers mean so much to me. Their relationship is honestly one of (if not THE) sweetest, healthiest, and most compelling relationships I've ever read and this book is 126 years old!

To me, Mina's assault is the most horrifying and heartbreaking scene in the book. It's hard to see a character you love go through something like that, but it's really cathartic to have a character there doing exactly what you wish you could, providing the well-needed comfort.
