Title: Dating Makes Perfect Author: Pintip Dunn Publisher: Entangled Teen Pages: 278 Availability: August 18, 2020 Review copy: ARC via publisher
Summary: The Tech sisters don’t date in high school. Not because they’re not asked. Not because they’re not interested. Not even because no one can pronounce their long, Thai last name—hence the shortened, awkward moniker. But simply because they’re not allowed.
Until now.
In a move that other Asian American girls know all too well, six months after the older Tech twins got to college, their parents asked, “Why aren’t you engaged yet?” The sisters retaliated by vowing that they won’t marry for ten (maybe even twenty!) years, not until they’ve had lots of the dating practice that they didn’t get in high school.
In a shocking war on the status quo, her parents now insist that their youngest daughter, Orrawin (aka “Winnie”), must practice fake dating in high school. Under their watchful eyes, of course—and organized based on their favorite rom-coms. ’Cause that won’t end in disaster.
The first candidate? The son of their longtime friends, Mat Songsomboon—arrogant, infuriating, and way too good-looking. Winnie’s known him since they were toddlers throwing sticky rice balls at each other. And her parents love him.
If only he weren’t her sworn enemy.
Review: The summary had me immediately. Do I love fake dating stories? Yes. I’ll admit it. Enemies forced together? Yes. That too. There are lots of rom-com formulas here, but they’re so fun. One reason there are so many is that Orrawin’s mom is planning the dating practice and based on rom-coms she and her husband have watched. You’ll see nods to Always Be My Maybe, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Pretty Woman, When Harry Met Sally and many more.
In addition to rom-com references, there are so many mentions of food. So, so many. You do not want to be hungry when you read this. That would be pure torture. Orrawin, also known as Winnie, loves food and focuses on it quite a bit. She’s not particularly interested in cooking, but certainly makes a point to appreciate everything that finds it’s way onto her plate. Food is also one way to win her heart. Seeing all of the mouth-watering descriptions may inspire readers to head to the kitchen or nearest Thai restaurant. Sometimes authors or readers create an audio playlist for a novel, this one is calling out for an accompanying cookbook.
Besides a serious appreciation for food, Winnie is also an artist and spends a lot of time sketching Mat so she can shoot Nerf darts at his annoyingly attractive image. Winnie made me smile so many times with her goofiness. She also has the ability to find joy in small things like a skirt featuring the heads of cats or tights decorated with hedgehogs, which is also endearing.
As a child of immigrants, she is walking the tightrope of trying to find her way without disappointing her parents. Her family and her Thai culture are extremely important to her. This is how she gets all mixed up with the fake dating scenario though. She doesn’t think she can fully be herself and still keep everyone happy. There are plenty of cringe-worthy moments as she struggles to find her way. There are also sweet, fumbly, romantic scenes too.
Recommendation: Get it soon especially if you’re looking for something to make your heart a little lighter. Winnie shines brightly and her story is just the thing if you’re wanting or needing a distraction.

Another catch up post with my November #wrapup 😁 📖 I started off with two witchy reads leftover from my October TBR, and then finished up with some amazing sci-fi’s! . • TOIL & TROUBLE - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beautifully written stories. Why THEY Watch Us Burn by Elizabeth May was my favorite! • THE WICKED DEEP by Shea Ernshaw- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book took me on a wild ride, an amazing twist and I was hooked! Truly loved it, one of my favorite reads of 2018. • STAR-CROSSED by Pintip Dunn - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book made me hungry 😂 SO MUCH FOOD! But honestly, I loved this book. I loved the friendships and the romance, but most importantly, I loved the moments between the MC and her father the most. They were some of my favorite and were truly beautiful. Great character development and although it left a bit open-ended, I’m excited that there will be another book (or atleast that’s what I’ve heard). • LIGHT YEARS by Kass Morgan - ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Kass Morgan (author of my fave The 100) knows how you make my sci-fi loving heart very very happy. Great assortment of diverse and loveable characters as well as romances! Great character development, badass genius moments, and a need for more! And that cliffhanger! • THIS MORTAL COIL by Emily Suvada- ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 What a cool and unique post-apocalyptic story! At first I kept getting a little lost because I unfortunately suck at anything science related BUTTTT once I caught on, this book got better and better. And yet again, ANOTHER AMAZING TWIST. One I barely saw coming. Awesome kickass scenes, MC being a badass genius, swoonworthy romance, and the cliffhanger! Why must you do this to me! 📖 ___________________________ #novemberwrapup #bookstack #scifireads #starlitreader #luminouslibrary #bookphotography #bookblogger #bookstagram #bookishphotos #bookishlife #yalit #igreads #bookishmerch #bookishcandles #bibliophile #lovereading

Title: Malice Author: Pintip Dunn Genres: Contemporary, Thriller, Romance, Science Fiction Pages: 339 Publisher: Entangled Teen Review Copy: Book received from publisher Availability: Available now
Summary: What I know: a boy in my school will one day wipe out two-thirds of the population with a virus.
What I don’t know: who he is.
In a race against the clock, I not only have to figure out his identity, but I’ll have to outwit a voice from the future telling me to kill him. Because I’m starting to realize no one is telling the truth. But how can I play chess with someone who already knows the outcome of my every move? Someone so filled with malice they’ve lost all hope in humanity? Well, I’ll just have to find a way—because now they’ve drawn a target on the only boy I’ve ever loved…
Review: If you’re in the mood for a thriller with a dash of science fiction and an entertaining romance, you should add MALICE to your to-read list. Author Pintip Dunn does a great job of keeping the tension high throughout this fast-paced novel where a teenager has to stop an apocalyptic future from happening.
One of the things that made Alice a refreshing protagonist for me is that she isn’t the obvious star for a thriller. Even after she finally comes to believe that the Voice is from the future, Alice isn’t the kind of person who can just go murder someone, even if she knows they’ll someday do terrible things and she may be the only one who can stop them. Her constant questioning of her own morals and her personal capacity for violence makes her dilemmas all the more intriguing. Is violence even a possible solution for her? let alone the best one to prevent catastrophe?
Whether or not MALICE works for you will largely hinge on how much you’re invested in Alice’s romance with Bandit, and I’m happy to say that I rather enjoyed the two of them together. After an extremely (and intentionally) rocky beginning, it was rewarding enough whenever they opened up to each other that I could ignore most of my quibbles. Bandit was a great supporting character and just as complicated and interesting as Alice. The rest of the cast were far less developed, which was a small disappointment, but Alice and Bandit were strong enough that the world didn’t feel empty.
I have a few nitpicks for the book—I wanted the science-fiction elements to pop up more frequently than they did, and I didn’t care for a character’s motivations as revealed in the climax—but overall MALICE was a gripping read. I plowed through it in just a couple days, and it kept my attention all the while.
Recommendation: Get it soon if you enjoy high-stakes conflict as the catalyst for your romances. There are a lot of interesting ideas lurking about in MALICE, and while not all of them went the way I’d hoped, you’ll likely have fun with this book if you are a fan of thrillers.
