The Secret of Kells (2009)
Tumblr media
It’s unfortunate that The Secret of Kells came out the same year as Up. Any other year, it would've nabbed that Best Animated Film Oscar no contest. Oh well. It isn’t as if a statue - or lack of one - makes the film any different. This is a beautiful story just waiting to be discovered.
In the tightly-knit community at the Abbey of Kells, the monks toil night and day to create illuminated manuscripts while keeping an ear out for possible Viking attacks. Young Brendan (voiced by Evan McGuire) is fascinated with stories of Brother Aidan (Mick Lally), whose Book of Iona  is unparalleled in beauty. His dreams of learning the craft are constantly squelched by his stern Uncle, Abbott Cellach (Brendan Gleeson), who cares only about building walls to repel invaders.
In a time where most animated films are rendered via computer, those created traditionally are a breath of fresh air. Even among those, The Secret of Kells stands out. It’ll sound silly to anyone who sees animated films as children’s fare but a scene where Vikings walk with lit torches fascinated me. How did they get the curves of the fire so perfect? How did they manage to portray the heat and threat of the invaders using those simple lines, curves and so few colors? There’s extra appeal in the way it tackles illuminated manuscripts, which were painstakingly created works of highly-detailed art the likes of which you just don’t see anymore. The film is drawn in a style of its own so when you get glimpses at the illuminated manuscripts, they dazzle. You don’t even have to know about the real-life Book of Kells - considered by many to be one of Ireland’s finest national treasures - to appreciate what you see. What it reminded me of most was The Thief and the Cobbler. Like it, The Secret of Kells is a clear passion project with the confidence to throw realism out the window when it needs to; everything is fair game as long as it furthers its agenda.
Story-wise, the film covers topics we just don’t see in North American cinema. It draws upon Celtic mythology and Irish folklore but also has its feet planted firmly in the real-life drama of a community that is perpetually afraid. Plus, your main character is essentially a monk in training, when was the last time you saw that? It isn’t this grand adventure but it has high stakes because of what you see. You want the book to be completed, for Brendan to be taught the ways of illumination. You also understand his uncle’s decision to forego such frivolities and focus on the incoming dangers. It has sophisticated emotions, the kind only present in the best animated films.
The Secret of Kells is a visual marvel whose unique story is sure to be enjoyed by both the young and old. It’s the kind of film illustrators will want to own on DVD so they can pause it and examine the characters, objects and backgrounds one frame at a time and incorporate elements into their own works. (on DVD, February 8, 2019)

Luis & the Aliens (2018):
“ An 11-year-old boy befriends three aliens after they crash their spaceship into his house (IMDb Description). “
Here’s a cute family animated movie that I’ve watched on thursday. I’ve visited my nephews and they decided to watch this movie. At first, I wasn’t paying much attention to it, but the last 45 minutes of it, I started to pay more attention and honestly...I liked it. It’s a very predictable movie, as you can expect, but it was decent. The animations have some solid moments, the plot is generic, the characters are very goofy and the humor...oh lord the humor is quite kinky at times. One of the jokes even left me speechless. Either way, It’s a fun little movie.

THE SECRET OF KELLS
Dir. TOMM MOORE (& NORA TWOMEY); Wri. FABRICE ZIOLKOWSKI; Music. BRUNO COULAIS & KILA; Starring. EVAN McQUIRE, BRENDAN GLEESON, CHRISTEN MOONY, MICK LALLY, MICHAEL McGRATH, LIAM HOURICAN, PAUL TYLAK, PAUL YOUNG; R.T. 75 mins; 2009, France/Belgium/Ireland
WHAT IT’S ABOUT:  The Dark Ages Irish Abbey of Kells is the only world that twelve year-old Brendan (McGuire) has ever known, having been brought up under the strict tutelage of his uncle, Abbot Cellach (Gleeson), who is obsessed with completing the massive sanctuary wall intended to protect Kells from attack by rumoured Viking hordes. This all changes with the arrival of Brother Aidan (Lally), a venerable master illuminator charged with the completion of the Book of Iona, a gospel manuscript with illustrations so rich they’re reputed to “turn darkness into light”.  Seeing great artistic potential in Brendan, Aidan enlists his help in the work, inspiring Brendan to go out into the larger world outside the Abbey, where he meets and befriends a spirited forest elf, Aisling (Moony). But there are dangers waiting for him out there too, and the Vikings draw nearer every day …
WHY IT’S AWESOME: I’ll admit, I’d never actually heard of this Oscar-nominated film when I first discovered the work of multi-award-winning animation director Tomm Moore, instead introduced when I encountered 2014’s mesmerising sleeper hit Song of the Sea.  It was only later, as I began to learn more about that film and its masterful creator, that I stumbled across this, his absolute masterpiece, a film of such singular style and immense beauty and power that I was left entirely awestruck. Like many of the best animated features, it’s a feast for all ages, a perfect means to engross children for an hour-and-change but just as fascinating and rewarding for grown-ups, deceptively simple and fun but ultimately proving surprisingly sophisticated once you start digging down through its MANY layers.  It’s a triumph of visual storytelling, Moore and co-director Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner, which Moore also co-directed) eschewing traditional exposition for a near-textbook example of the inherent strengths of Show-Don’t-Tell, and we’re pulled in hook, line and sinker by its well-written, perfectly-pitched characters and exquisitely esoteric, stylised visuals, the animation intentionally invoking the Celtic art and religious iconography resplendent in the film’s subject matter, lending it a rich, delicious, haunting and occasionally unsettling beauty that effortlessly holds the eye.  The voice-cast are uniformly excellent, too – Brendan may have been the only role of note for Evan McGuire, but he made him a compellingly precocious young hero, especially in his interactions with fellow unknown Christen Moony, who brought sweet mischief to youthful fairy Aisling but tempered it with an edge of ancient sadness that yearningly evokes the lost wonder of the legendary Tuatha De Danann she represents, and with acclaimed late Irish character actor Mick Lally (A Man of No Importance), who brought the gleeful twinkle of a favourite uncle to Brother Aidan, while living legend Brendan Gleeson instils cool, stony authority and unshaken integrity in the Abbot of Kells.  There are many moments of simple, wide-eyed wonder and plenty of honest, wholesome belly laughs too, but there’s also a compelling dark side to the film, particularly in the fantastic beast-like portrayal of the Vikings and Brendan’s skin-crawling encounters with ancient Celtic demon Crom Cruach, and a lot of dramatic power to add some epic FEELS to the viewing experience.  Equal parts visually arresting and emotionally enthralling, this truly is one of the most spell-binding animated features to have come along this century, a perfect evocation of an age long since passed, and still the crowning glory of one of the very best filmmakers working in this cinematic art-form today. I’m thoroughly intrigued to see what Tomm Moore will bring us when his latest project, Wolfwalkers, arrives later this year …
