Day 6 Reveals!
Been Meaning to Tell You (Julie and The Phantoms (TV 2020)) written by nineofhearts, performed by roseszain Summary: In high school, Willie and Alex are friends. Not friends in the “we hangout one on one all of the time outside of school” sense, but friends in the “we spend lots of time together at school one on one and sometimes we hangout with a group outside of school” type friends. Now, 6 years after graduation they’re both out of college. They’ve fallen out of touch (college, boys, life caused them to drift). Willie is a pro skater in LA, Alex and Sunset Curve are based in NYC and are just starting to really “make it”. In other words, Willie and Alex re-enter each other’s orbits 6 years post-high school graduation and there are definitely feelings in the air. Lonely Boy ~ Shiba Inu (TOMORROW X TOGETHER | TXT (Korea Band)) written by Asterhythm, performed by cobbie Summary: Take a blender. Mix equal parts Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo, and Macross (particularly Frontier). Add in the boys of TOMORROW X TOGETHER, blend and pour over the Milagro Menta galaxy, serve with Yoko Kanno realness. [In which Choi Soobin is kidnapped by evil aliens, and his husband Yeonjun will stop at nothing to get him back, chasing him across the universe with help from best friend Beomgyu, pilot Taehyun, and android Kai.] Okay, 9, 4, 3, let’s jam ~ Turning up the heat (Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types) written by litra, performed by mistbornhero Summary: Cody and Obi-Wan are paired up for the latest episode of That's Food. Then Obi-Wan starts flirting... Doing The Lord's Dirty Work (Welcome to Night Vale) written by Rosemarycat5, performed by CrimsonMoonn Summary: Someone named Erika has taken on the moniker "Avenging Angel", according to an anonymous source. Who knows what they will do? Have Your Blood and Eat it Too (二哈和他的白猫师尊 - 肉包不吃肉 | The Husky and His White Cat Shizun - Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat) written and performed by Haoppopotamus and elrohir Summary: Chu Wanning goes into seclusion again for his golden core issue. This time, however, the seclusion only lasts 7 days. To what lengths will Mo Ran go to heal Chu Wanning's core once he figures out a way to help? Snippet: Chu Wanning entered seclusion after the Cold Food Festival. Every few years, he secluded himself for ten days to tend to his golden core, which was still damaged even so many years later. Mo Ran set to preparing their small cottage for Chu Wanning's return—polishing furniture, weeding the garden, dusting hard-to-reach corners. It was unusual for them to spend more than a few days apart, so he busied himself during the day to stave off the loneliness. Did you hear what Father did? (Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor (Movies)) written by Cail_Jei, performed by Drel_Murn So many stories of where I've been and how I got to where I am (Wiedźmin | The Witcher - All Media Types, Wiedźmin | The Witcher (Video Game)) written by JuneOokami, performed by Wereflamingo Summary: Ciri likes to hear stories from her three guardians, especially when it's bedtime. Sometimes she's lucky and they tell her the same story, each from their own perspective, and she gets to hear more about them amidst their tales. Woke Up Married (Our Flag Means Death (TV)) written by Sivan325, performed by Ellejabell Summary: “What the hell did we do last night?” Izzy asked with frustration. He didn’t remember anything, his mind was blank. Lucius, who felt the loss of Izzy, stretched and woke up, looking at Izzy with love in his eyes. A Vampire Visit to the New Providence Widows' Club (What We Do in the Shadows (TV), Our Flag Means Death (TV)) written by pandamug, performed by artax_risen Summary: 1717-ish Nadja of Antipaxos, sick to undeath of being on a fucking boat, get dropped off for a Caribbean holiday away from her husband. Featuring: sexy widows, women who are widows via technicality, not-dead husbands, and a bawdy sea shanty Particular About My Library (Black Sails) created by Opalsong, RevolutionaryJo, and Syr Summary: Jack: Hello and welcome back to Particular About My Library, the best book podcast this side of the Marianas Trench. On either side, actually. Maybe there’s a better one at the bottom, but I wouldn’t count on it. And welcome to our special guest, the irreplaceable Max. Max: We both know I’m only here because Featherstone has a date night with Adele Monsterfuckers AƧSEMBLE: an AᗺBA tribute album (Multifandom) written and produced by carboncopies and olive2read, performed by carboncopies Summary: Many years ago, Brian David Gilbert made a shocking revelation about a famous Swedish pop group. With very little alteration, nearly all of their hits could be performed by Halloween villains. Frightened of what he learned, Brian buried his discovery in the dark recesses of his mind and swore to never share it with the world. Until October 2021… Following the publication of this breakthrough, carboncopies and olive2read were hit with another, even more startling, realisation. While a few of AᗺBA’s songs may have been written by Halloween monsters, many were written by monsterFUCKERS. This monsterfucking team has spent the summer painstakingly peeling back the layers to uncover the truth behind the sweet disco beats and seemingly innocuous lyrics. And what a glorious truth it is! A call to action! Monsterfuckers AƧSEMBLE! Hues (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, A Stitch in Time - Andrew J. Robinson) created by BardicRaven and RisalSoran Summary: Color, like Truth, sometimes has sharp edges and clearly-defined borders. And sometimes, it does not.

Movies I watched this Week - #83
It was another busy week film-watching-wise, and I managed to see a fair number of excellent films. The best of the lot were ‘Mrs. Harris goes to Paris’, ‘The Lacemaker’, ‘A scene at the sea’, ‘Incendies’.
🍿
2 with Lesley Manville + 2 with Isabelle Huppert:
🍿 Another haute couture adjacent role for the absolutely delightful Lesley Manville (After ‘Phantom Thread’) in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022). A Pixar-charming fairy tale with a score mimicking the "Married Life" opening sequence to ‘Up’. Mrs. Harris is Queen-For-A-Day, an older cleaning lady widow, who dreams of buying a Dior gown in 1956 Paris. Huppert plays a bitchy gatekeeper at the high-end retailer, an unusual role for her. This is the kind of pleasant romance for old people that my mom will love, but so did I, very much. 8/10.
🍿 My 5th Mike Leigh film, Topsy-Turvy, (1999) about the creation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera ‘The Mikado’. Not particularly fond of period dramas, and mostly unfamiliar with Gilbert and Sullivan’s Victorian music hall comedies, this highly-regarded production didn’t connect with me.
🍿 I’ve seen a dozen or so films with Isabelle Huppert, but none was actually from the beginning of her exceptional career. In The Lacemaker (1977) she stars as a shy 18-year-old girl who falls in love for the first time. Even though she was only 24 at the time, she already played at 15 films before. It’s obvious that even at that young age, she was a major talented actress. Subtle, compassionate and reserved, just like Vermeer’s. 9/10.
🍿
A Scene at the Sea (1991), my second by Takeshi Kitano, the one he made right before ‘Sonatine’. A quiet story about a young garbage collector who finds a discarded surfing board on his route and his geeky girlfriend with exceptionally big ears, both mute and deaf. It’s so refreshing to see an action-less ‘sport’ film that doesn’t hit you on the head with it, and where the determined ‘hero’ never gets more than half-decent with his hobby. (Photo Above).
A very lovely score by Joe Hisaishi, reminiscent of Erik Satie. 8/10
🍿
3 by Denis Villeneuve:
🍿 His horrifying Incendies (2010), dramatizing the tragic story of Lebanese fighter Souha Bechara during the Civil War. I resisted watching it for a long time, as I could feel it was too emotionally draining, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. Canadian twins are searching to unearth their mother’s middle eastern harrowing secrets. The torture, atrocities and cruelty were indeed tough to sit through, mostly because of Villeneuve's realistic direction, but the power of this extraordinary film gave it universal appeal. 9/10.
🍿 Next Floor, his symbolic, one-note 2008 short about a group of high-society carnivores who gorge themselves on dish after squishy dish at a dark banquet. Is it hell, or are they just modern consumers?
🍿 So After ‘Sicario’ and ‘Enemy’ and now ‘incendies’, I thought that maybe I should cover the rest of Villeneuve‘s works. But, after being discovered as a multi-layered story-teller, the first of the big Hollywood breaks he got, Prisoners (2013), was creepy and utterly unpleasant. Child abduction stories are usually a sadistic guise to dwell in the “worst of humanity”. And gory vigilantes are the excuse for “excising” these demons. But I despise both and don’t need them in my life, especially when they are delivered in degrading slow-motion and without any redeeming qualities (in spite of all the shallow religious symbolism). Fuck him.
David Thomson expressed it well here. 2/10.
🍿
The innocents (2022), my second Nordic Terror (after ‘Blind’) from Norwegian Eskil Vogt (who co-wrote all of Joachim Trier‘s films). It’s about an angelic-faced blond little girl, her autistic sister, and two other children who are afflicted with supernatural powers, one of them uses it for “evil”. The young actress who plays the autistic sister is incredible. And the Ambiance Noir score is superb.
It’s actually my favorite of these two authors’ disturbing work. Unfortunately, I can see him getting a big Netflix production as his next project, which will turn his subtle style into a bombastic, soulless formula.
🍿
Richard Burton X 2:
🍿 Absolution, another 1978 British drama with tortured priest Richard Burton, struggling with the deadly consequences of his ‘Seal of confession’. But, unlike ‘The night of the iguana’ this time there’s no John Huston to guide, and especially no Tennessee Williams to present ‘real’ characters. Instead, the 'Children's Hour’ theme of a strict teacher at a Catholic boarding school and his different treatment of two students is meddled, confused, and unsatisfying. The role of the rebellious student, who snares the priest into a evil web of murder is especially weak.
The best the film has to offer is Burton’s mellifluous, gravelly-deep Welsh voice, which is plenty, really. 4/10 for the 'Voice’ and the 70′s English film style.
🍿 Under Milk Wood, 1972 BBC adaptation of Dylan Thomas’s classic play, about a day and night in a small Welsh village. Burton and Thomas were friends and drinking buddies.
...“From where you are you can hear in Cockle Row in the spring, moonless night, Miss Price, dressmaker and sweetshop-keeper, dream of her lover, tall as the town clock tower, Samson syrup-gold-maned, whacking thighed and piping hot, thunderbolt-bass'd and barnacle-breasted, flailing up the cockles with his eyes like blowlamps and scooping low over her lonely loving hotwaterbottled body”...
🍿
As I am ready to immerse myself in  the films of Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, Tsai Ming-liang, Etc. I watched the documentary Flowers of Taipei: Taiwan New Cinema (2014), about the Taiwanese New Wave of the 1980s. I’m looking forward to them.
🍿
2 epic Hindi stories from India:
🍿 3 Idiots (2009), a cheesy Bollywood saga about 3 friends at an engineering school. Like many Indian movies, it’s a 3 hour long broad comedy, over-dramatic with exaggerated details and absurd logic. Until everybody burst out singing and start dancing in front of neon-colorful vistas. Every time I see one of them, I say that I need many more Hindi musicals in my life. 5/10.
🍿 “... There are two kind of people in this world, Dicks and Assholes... And this is a game that these two play...”
Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) is a violent 5-hour gangster epic about three mafia families who fight for wealth and control through 3 generations. It’s frantic, bloody, brutal action, aspiring to be an Indian ‘The Godfather’ story, about revenge, greed and power. Unusually profane, with dozens and dozens of characters, and choppy story telling style. Banned in Qatar for violent content!
🍿
My 8th Hong Sang-soo film, Woman on the beach (2006), is the least satisfying of them so far. Probably because the main character is a common jerk. It does not start that way: A youngish director, Mr. Kim, is urging a colleague and his girlfriend to join him at a small seaside resort. There they sit in small restaurants (as per the usual Sang-soo custom), drink lots of Soju and talk endlessly. But slowly he discloses himself to be a deceptive ass, who manipulates the women around him, just so he can sleep with them, while still thinking so highly of his art craft. A disturbing portrait of a male ego, that is surely autobiographical.
And then there’s the unexplainable scenes with a cute white dog, Dori, which is abandoned by his normally-looking owners, just like that! Unsettling!
🍿
2 first-watches starring Paul Newman:
🍿 Hitchcock’s cold-war spy “thriller” Torn Curtain (1966) with Newman and Julie Andrews. Lame, old-fashioned and lacking any suspense, the worst of his films in my mind. However, Hitch’s cameo at the beginning of the film is in Copenhagen at the hotel d'Angleterre, so yeah for that.
🍿Slap Shot (1977), a broad sport comedy that was his favorite role to shoot. About a failing ice hockey team that starts playing outrageously and violently. His only comedy?
🍿
Buster Keaton’s silent cowboy adventure, Go West (1925). Not as inventive or slapsticky as his best stuff, but it ends with a wild herd of cattle stampeding through the streets of LA.
🍿
2 By Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo:
🍿Colossal (2016) was truly a stupid movie: A giant reptilian Kaiju appears in Seoul, South Korea, killing and destroying things in its path. At the same time, alcoholic loser Anne Hathaway discovers that she is actually the one who remote-controls the Godzilla-like monster from a playground in her small New Hampshire home town. And from there, it gets funkier, and less coherent. It’s difficult to imagine how people come up with these moronic concepts. 1/10.
🍿7:35 in the Morning (2003) was his first film, an Oscar-nominated short about a suicide bomber who terrorizes a busy cafe, by singing and dancing and getting everybody to join him. Odd and uninteresting
I actually saw another of his films this year, ‘Time Crimes’ - and all three were no good!
🍿
“...This corn is raw!...”
The perennial Cold War techno-thriller WarGames (1983 - Opening scene with young Michael Madsen and John Spencer).
Doctor Strangelove’s Doomsday Machine with Stephen Hawking robotic voice, and the film that convinced ‘Evil Empire’ Reagan to invest billions of dollars in his SDI Star War wet-dream systems. Re-watch.
"...A strange game. The only winning move is not to play..."
🍿
Leif Gantvoort’s short Passed the Brush (2020) about a man who has a makeup brush fall from the ceiling into his lap. Re-watch.
🍿
I’m finally going to start watching ‘Better call Saul’ this week. But until then, I binged on ‘Slippin’ Jimmy’, a quick animated AMC money-grab, which is basically Saul Goodman spin-off for 9-year-old boys. 1/10.

Throw-back to the art project:
Under milk Wood Adora.

Nautilus Model Kit! Nine Tricks The Competition Knows, But You Do Not
The more you shovel through the bottom beneath the old mining town, you’ll uncover unimaginable riches and long misplaced information on humans, who've since change into shells of their former selves. That tearing motion can expose the grass to more diseases. And, in fact, objects with high steampunk quotient, equivalent to brass light fixtures or Victorian scientific instruments, can add charm and curiosity to nearly any arrange. Steampunk parts, comparable to darkish walls, industrial lighting, brass fittings and Edison bulbs, have also been featured within the designs of numerous eating places. “The elegant simplicity of these fixtures, a white or clear glass shade on a brass base, the bakelite change. With all of the town of Dunwall after him, Corvo has to get crafty to unravel the mystery and survive long sufficient to clear his title. At the top of the volcanic winter, gamers erect their city on this strategic metropolis-building survival title. Players that enjoyed the meticulous stealth of The Dark Project have seemingly been pining for a similar experience - and will have discovered it in video games like Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed.
These kits not solely embody building supplies to craft a wide range of products, however every also consists of a character-primarily based story, which adds a relationship component not found in lots of different toys. They will usually be discovered within the $one hundred twenty to $150 vary. A steampunk interior can seem a lot like the Victorian drawing room in your imagination - stately, restrained, proper - whereas at the same time containing contemporary comforts and conveniences. In consequence, the superb Sachs T3 three-velocity, in manufacture for a century and often confused with the identical firm’s Torpedo coaster-brake hub, is now known because the SRAM T3. That's why an increasing number of organizations are deactivating their wind tunnels and shifting to computer modeling (also called computational fluid dynamics), which is now often used in place of bodily models and tunnels. If best budget speedcube are excited about reading extra about that, you can peruse this submit and this submit, which I wrote to sort of tackle that very level. You increase a superb level!
However, Power Wagons got here only with the long frame even when patrons opted not to order their truck with the Braden winch that was a manufacturing unit option. With Allied victory over the Axis powers came the return of civilian car and truck manufacturing in the U.S. In 1999, Dodge showed a Power Wagon concept truck that was an homage to the 1940s authentic. Bottero, Kiva. "How to select the Riht Wind Turbine in your Property." Wind Power Authority. The predecessor to Spirit Tracks, The Phantom Hourglass is actually a sequel to The Wind Waker, following Link after he awakens on a mysterious island in the course of the good Sea. From RPGs to actual-time strategy video games, steampunk has offered creators a unique aesthetic for the following unbelievable, and sometimes perilous, tales. One in every of solely a handful of steampunk-impressed The Legend of Zelda games, The Phantom Hourglass is a delightful departure from the themes and tones of the core sequence. The Professor Layton series has been an “up and down” mixture of titles, but the Curious Village has remained a prime choice. The Phantom Hourglass went on to score several business awards, together with Editor’s Choice awards from IGN and GameStop and the 2008 Golden Joystick for Best Handheld Game.
The first-individual stealth recreation was greatest known for what was a complicated AI for its time, which provided players with a multifaceted experience that required plenty of thought and consideration. Dishonoreds fight is inspired and is a far cry from the stagnant first-individual firefights of related titles. Though Skies of Arcadia options flip-primarily based combat and characters that may stage up, like a traditional RPG, one in every of its main focuses was exploration. Released in 1998, it was one of the key pioneers of the stealth trade, alongside Metal Gear Solid (which launched two months earlier) and Hitman (which launched two years later). The Dark Project launched a collection of games that plenty of players would love to see revisited. Looking Glass Studios could not exist anymore, however the legacy it left behind with the Thief sequence won’t quickly be forgotten. To discover a site that may accommodate current needs and future progress, planners might search property on the outskirts of a city, particularly if rail and freeway techniques can present sufficient service between the airport and downtown areas. Believe it or not, there was a time when slicing your grass didn't contain driving or pushing a small, fuel-belching engine back and forth throughout your property.

Detective Conan Movie Ranking
Hey so while my laptop has been down I binged all 23 main Detective Conan movies and was gonna give a brief review and breakdown
Favorite (9-10) one of my favs High Medium (6-8) enjoyed, probably will watch again Low Medium (3-5) not bad but forgettable, might rewatch but maybe not Ugh (0-2) just bad, I don’t want to see it again
1. The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1997) [6] Relatively simple bombing plot but some good character action and development. Not as good as I remembered.
2. The Fourteenth Target (1998) [5] Criminal is targeting people close to Kogoro, some good scenes but not my favorite. Liked it more than I remembered which wasn’t a lot.
3. The Last Wizard of the Century (1999) [9] The Kaitou Kid is after a Russian Fabergé Egg. A true classic, one of the best. This whole movie is nostalgic with a good mix of action and heart. I love it every time I watch it.
4. Captured in Her Eyes (2000) [3] Ran witnesses a murder attempt and loses her memory. Pretty bland and kind of a dumb plot, not inherently bad just not my thing. Expectations were low.
5. Countdown to Heaven (2001) [7] Several key figures in the creation of a building are murdered. The turn where DC movies became a little more action oriented, fairly good mystery, good effects and good character development. Liked it more than I remembered.
6. The Phantom of Baker Street (2002) [9] A rogue AI traps a bunch of kids in a virtual reality 19th century London to solve the Ripper case. As a Sherlock fan this is near and dear to me, like #3 its a warm, comforting movie. Always makes me smile to watch.
7. Crossroad in the Ancient Capital (2003) [5] Conan, Heiji and the rest are in Kyoto when a slew of antique smugglers are murdered, explores Heiji’s first love. Its okay, had some good deductions and bonding btw Heiji and Shinichi but the plot was a bit boring.
8. Magician of the Silver Sky (2004) [9] The Kaitou Kid is planning on stealing a jeweled ring aboard a plane. Unironically probably my favorite, I just love this one so much for the half batshit/half emotional plot. Best use of Kid in the movies.
9. Strategy Above the Depths (2005) [7] A series of murders occur on a luxury liner. It takes a fairly simple plot and spins a genuinely compelling murder mystery with som good character moments for Ran, Conan and Kogoro. Liked it more than before.
10. Private Eye’s Requiem (2006) [8] With their loved ones held hostage at an amusement park, Kogoro, Conan and Heiji need to solve a cold case. The plot is a bit weak but this movie has the second best use of Kid and is hysterical from a meta POV. Love it every time.
11. Jolly Roger of the Deep Azure (2007) [4] One a small island, the group chases after treasure hunters and potentially pirates gold. Such a fun premise that ultimately falls flat but it’s got it’s enjoyable moments. Honestly couldn’t remember any of this movie.
12. The Full Score of Fear (2008) [6] Prior to a big music concert in Japan, a famous singer is targeted. The plot was kind of weird and forgettable but idk, I genuinely liked this. Definitely the calmest of DC movies, kind of a nice break from the usual chaos.
13. The Raven Chaser (2009) [9] A serial killer is on the loose and Conan finds himself competing for clues against the Black Organization. Another classic, a tight, fascinating plot, probably the highest plot related stakes in the movie verse.
14. The Lost Ship in the Sky (2010) [7] The Kaitou Kid targets a jewel from an airship targeted by bio-terrorists. Kid is a little bit too bastard in this one tricking Ran like that but the plot is pretty interesting and has some nail-biting moments.
15. Quarter of Silence (2011) [4] A train is bombed and the investigation takes them to a snowy village where an unsolved case resurfaces. Again, has some good moments and good visuals but overall was pretty forgettable. I barely remembered it.
16. The Eleventh Striker (2012) [5] Soccer stadiums are being bombed and its a race against time in the midst of final matches. Same as above, good moments, good action but kind of boring. I liked it slightly more than when I first watched it.
17. Private Eye in the Distant Sea (2013) [1] A spy has been identified onboard a Japanese naval vessel with promises of more murder and mayhem. I was so bored throughout this entire movie and the plot was boring and meandering and didn’t make much sense.
18. The Dimensional Sniper (2014) [3] A disgruntled American ex-sniper targets those who wronged him. Japan counters with their own sniper. Centralized on American military culture, it focuses on precision shooting with some nice effects but the plot is laughably bad.
19. The Hellfire Sunflowers (2015) [7] The Kaitou Kid targets van Gogh’s Sunflowers but is he becoming murderous? This one is kind of wild but in a fun way. The criminals motivation is baffling but a morally ambiguous Kid and Kid/Conan interactions are delightful.
20. The Darkest Nightmare (2016) [8] A Black Org member steals a list of all the spies in the BO but loses her memory and she must decide if she wants to go back. Another heavy BO movie, it’s both poignant with crazy, physics defying action scenes. Really enjoyed it.
21. The Crimson Love Letter (2017) [7] A Karuta card tournament is being threatened while Kahuza battles a girl in cards for Heiji’s love. This one I hadn’t seen before and it was very interesting, Kazuha got the well deserved spotlight along with some fascinating Japanese culture.
22. Zero the Enforcer (2018) [1] Amuro accuses Kogoro of bombing a building leading to a legal and physical battle of wits and will. I..... I legit was so lost half of this movie. It jumped around wildly and borderline made no sense. Also I’m just not an Amuro fan so I couldn’t dismiss its flaws like I can with Kid movies.
23. The Fist of the Blue Sapphire (2019) [2] Kaito Kid targets a sapphire in Singapore during a karate tournament and kidnaps Conan. This is the exception that proves the rule, the only Kid movie I legit didn’t like. Its so nonsensical and Kid again is too bastard to be likable. What even was the plot?

HBO Max New Releases: December 2020
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.
While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec. 15).
There isn’t much going on on the TV side of things. His Dark Materials is set to run its season 2 finale on Dec. 28. But at that point, everyone will likely be on their fourth Wonder Woman rewatch.
Here is the full list of everything coming to and leaving HBO Max in December 2020.

---
the ones i mark as “favorite” just have some aspect of them that im especially drawn to; like the forest scene in ivan’s childhood or the cinnamon toffee of mother of george. my favorite overall was maybe the world of us, which reminded me a lot of my own childhood; and i liked the way the camera stuck to the main character in certain scenes. i also liked long day’s journey into night bc all it takes to impress me is a floaty camera and long takes.
all the movies i rewatched i already liked, except for touch of evil, which i watched bc the opportunity presented itself to me and i wanted to see if i still found it as boring as the first time i saw it nearly ten years ago in my high school film class, and the answer is yes i still don’t like it lmao. take care of my cat was still a nice watch though; i also watched jeong jae-eun’s 2017 film butterfly sleep, but it’s not listed bc i stopped watching after 15 minutes; it was a nope from me.
watching a borrowed life and early hou, i could guess a little what wu nien-jen wanted dust in the wind to be: the personal voice-over hou did for the time to live and the time to die; the relatively straightforward adaptation of chu tien-wen’s script for a summer at grandpa’s. in the mood for love is still a juggernaut lol; i like it for many of the same reasons i like the assassin.

THE PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES
Sunday, August 03, 2008
OPENING: Hello, good evening, and welcome to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. A fisherman is found dead of radiation poisoning, so the U.S. Department Of Defense investigates. As the 1950's grew to a close so did the era of the giant radioactive beast. Spawned from the nuclear fears stemming from World War Two, the movies saw dozens of monsters due to one of the popular catch words of the time: Radiation! By decades end, just about every manner of beastie had been seen. The major studios had lost the inclination to finance such projects, and gradually re-focused their attention on new trends like nudies, bikies and gothic horror. That is not to say that movies with critters didn't exist. It's just that, more often than not, it was left to the little guy, the independent producer or filmmaking rookie to unleash such monsters. BREAK: Don't go away, we'll be right back with more creatures up from the depths, and then after the ads we'll get back to The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues. MIDDLE: Welcome back to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show, and The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues. For the record, the figure in the title of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea refers to the linear distance covered by the Nautilus from the time Captain Nemo takes Land, Aronnax, and Conseil aboard to the time of the submarine's apparent destruction, and not to the depth at which the Nautilus cruises. In fact, no submarine could cruise at such a depth, at least not on this planet. A league is a rather imprecise unit, defined variously as anything from roughly 2.4 to 4.6 miles, but even the most conservative definition yields a value for 20,000 leagues that is an order of magnitude greater than the total diameter of the Earth. I bring this up because of people like the makers of The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues. Not only do they proudly trumpet their ignorance of just what a league is with a title like that, but they go on to attach it to a movie in which the titular monster inhabits a kelp bed which can't possibly be located more than about fifteen feet below the ocean's surface. It's one hell of a monster, too. Though it is portrayed by the standard man in a suit, it really can't be characterised as a Gill Man. Vaguely Humanoid Sea Serpent might be the best description. It's a lumpy thing, with a barrel-chested body, short, squat, flipper-like limbs, and a somehow bovine head adorned with a row of backward-curving horns running down the midline from snout to cranium. All in all, it looks like the kind of thing that might turn up in a really ambitious high school play on the theme of Saint George & The Dragon. This creature is among the very first things we see, too, as a fisherman in a little rowboat accidentally snags it in his net, and is pulled to his death beneath the waves. Strangely, his body will later be described as having suffered massive radiation burns rather than the sort of damage you'd expect a sea monster to inflict. There's still one more angle to The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues which I haven't addressed. Since we have both a square-jawed and heavily pomaded scientist and the low-wattage daughter of a second supposed genius, there can be no question but that a romance will develop between the two of them. When it does, it turns out to be even more awful than most of its fellows from similar movies of the day. Rusoff's dialogue is wretched from beginning to end, but he saves some of his most painfully inane work for the courtship between Ted Stevens and Lois King. Their cozy little subplot also enjoys the distinction of featuring practically every cliché in the book. The Help Me With My Zipper scene, the Here I Am Right Outside The Bathroom Door When You Come Out Wearing Nothing But An Indifferently Draped Towel scene, the Piercing The Emotionless Façade Of The Scientist scene. It would be plenty bad enough even with a pair of actors much more capable than Kent Taylor and Cathy Downs portraying it. With those two as the romantic leads, the subplot is simply horrendous. Of course, that just means it's of a piece with
everything else about The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues. CLOSING: It's alright, you can open your eyes now. Can you imagine trying to sit through this (as the first-run audiences did) on a double bill with The Day the World Ended? Anyway, please join me next week so I can poke you in the eye with another frightful excursion to the backside of the Public Domain, filmed in glorious 2-D black & white Regularscope on The Schlocky Horror Picture Show. Toodles!
