Pinch Reviews: The Portal Series
In April of this year I played Portals 1 and 2 accompanied by @monochromevt. I'd never really played the games in full, but had been exposed to them extensively in the past as they are games that are Literally unavoidable.
My reviews of these games will be rather curt, compared to some of my other reviews, due in large part to that at no point did I necessarily feel as though I was surprised by Portals 1 or 2. This is however, NOT, because of the games themselves. I had a great time playing both campaigns and the coop with Mono, and it was really nice and gratifying to see the origins of phrases like "the cake is a lie" or seeing Wheatley's whole, Bit.
Really the lack of impression that I felt playing each of these games was the result of that exposure to the series at large that I mentioned previously. There's nothing *wrong* with either of these games, I'd say they're definitely excellent puzzle experiences that if you were like me and haven't played them you'd be remiss to skip. However, I didn't feel that the other areas of Portal as a series outside of the immaculate level design were lost on me, as, well, I'd seen it all before. I'd heard each of Glados' lines, Wheatley's lines, Cave Johnson's lines, every character's lines, a thousand times over in a thousand different contexts, such that I felt that I was watching a 2015 meme compilation as opposed to playing one of the greatest games of all time.
I WILL say however: I adore Glados' now more than I ever had. She is SUCH a strong character who is written in such a way as to make you feel the humanity within her cold, robotic exterior, and realize that you've been looking at the real her the whole time, and she's just actually evil.
Glados is the main aspect of the game that I took away as being new to me from my time spent with the game, and I'd say that even with the exposure that I'd felt to her character, I felt that she was best experienced in context of the source material.
I am not a game designer, and puzzle games can be foolhardy to critique without just turning into a bunch of devspeak that helps noone, so I won't. I felt that I had the resources to learn and experiment at all times in the Portal series, and that every idea I could have come up with maybe could have worked under the right circumstances, and *that* is Portal's greatest (gameplay) strength to me.
If you'd like to watch the playthrough that sparked this take, you can watch it right here!

Portal 2 little review
Tumblr media
Honestly this game is amazing. Everything about it is good.
The story is jus so godamn good, with twists and turns, and just so well paced. The characters are very good and iconic. The jokes are good too.
The graphics of this game amazing, even if it is a little old, it still shows an amazing place that has been abandoned. Like, it's so beautiful.
The gameplay is also one of the best. A puzzle game in first person, and it's so well made. All the puzzles are so well thought and fun to do, that even if you alredy know how to complete them, you still can have fun. It's so good, eveerything about this game is good.

Portal: Revolution Review (PC)
NOTE: As of writing this review, I have only played up to halfway through Chapter 5.
With Valve refusing to craft a title involving the number three over the last decade, people inevitably created new experiences for the long-starved fandoms of their franchises. Whereas these creations typically featured unique levels and mods utilizing already-released games, not many fans take on the onus of creating an entire game with these tools. However, Face Software recently released their take on the Portal franchise with the mod Portal: Revolution. This mod stands out among other fan-created projects by creating an entire experience packed with new mechanics and a semi-successful attempt at recapturing the spirit of the original games, built on the iconic second game.
Portal: Revolution does a decent job of encapsulating the feeling of the original Portal titles. The graphics look as fantastic as Portal 2’s- since Revolution is a mod of Portal 2- and the original assets mesh perfectly with their surroundings. Everything feels crisp and as lively as an abandoned testing facility can feel. The mod even features slight improvements on the gameplay, as lasers can no longer kill the player (Granted, I cannot say if this is a bug or a feature, but it’s a welcome addition nonetheless) and the game derives as much content out of a half-functional portal device as possible, using this to create three chapters full of challenging puzzles!
The only problem with recreating the atmosphere of Portal arises due to the difficulty of replicating the wit and charm of the original titles. While the characters in Portal: Revolution provide interesting perspectives on the events of Portal 1, they lack traits- such as GLaDOS’ sarcasm, Cave Johnson’s madness, and Wheatly’s foolishness- that make them intriguing and humorous outside of what they contribute to the plot. Additionally, while the voice actors do a fantastic job, the delivery of certain lines and the attempts at witty dialogue again pale in comparison to the original games.
What Portal: Revolution did recapture from the original titles was unfortunately the overall structure of their plot. The story beats of Portal 2 and Portal: Revolution feel too similar to each other, as they both start with the player character waking up in a bedroom, attempting to accomplish some goal before they can escape, ending up in the underground sections of the compound and exploring several old test chambers while accompanied by a disembodied, prerecorded voice, and so on. While the events offered by Portal: Revolution are dissimilar enough from Portal 2 to provide a unique adventure, those familiar with Portal 2 may find themselves with a sense of Déjà vu.
However, the game utilizes its perspective of the events of Portal 1 to craft superb levels for the player to explore. A handful of levels involves the player breaking free from the typical level design of most Portal puzzles, whether this comes in the form of breaking into multiple rooms to progress forward, exploration revolving around intricately designed and ominous halls, or the utilization of objects like breakers. Granted, Portal 2 also features segments like this, but Portal: Revolution utilizes them more often and with better design to boot.
All in all, I give this game an 8/10!

The best rated Valve game on Steam is Portal 2 with 98% positive reviews (by the most amount of reviews, Half-Life: Alyx and Portal also had 98% but had less reviews)!
The Valve game with the worst reviews on Steam is Artifact with 46%!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to this fact, Valve has released 32 games on Steam! And they've released more too but not on there (Half-Life: Decay. Plus their many scrapped game ideas)

Portal 2
Tumblr media
How many players? 1 to 2 What console(s) is it available on? PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Nintendo Switch
The original Portal was just a small side project packaged with the highly anticipated Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and the long-awaited Team Fortress 2. To the shock of many, it turned out to be the most well-liked of the bunch, with many claiming it was the best game of the entire decade. It was an ingenious puzzle game with a wonderful unique mechanic which should be quite obvious from the title. Just one example: you could put a portal into the ground, one into the ceiling, and fall infinitely until you reached terminal velocity. It was clever and fun in equal measure.
Tumblr media
As with all successes, it was only a matter of time until the developers returned to it to wring out more money, thus Portal 2 joined Half-Life and Team Fortress in having second instalments. Fortunately, Portal 2 is still great and just as inventive and fun as the original while also bringing a co-op campaign separate from the main story. You and a friend can bring double the portals to solve puzzles, all the while still being sarcastically remarked on by the resident robot darling GLaDOS, whose glorious pitch-black humour has only aged like a fine wine.
Tumblr media
Portal has universal acclaim as one of the all-time greatest games that everyone must experience for its uniqueness, brilliance, and fun. Portal 2 allows the fun to be shared between family and friends and is just as good as it was before. Although the first-person perspective takes some getting used to, the games are truly worth it.

My Steam year in review! I played a lot of Don't Starve, and I'm still trying to beat SA2 in preparation for Sonic Movie 3.
(I probably should've posted this sooner, but life got busy. My 2022 Steam year in review is also under the cut.)

we have to write these self-intros on a discussion board for my intro to game dev class and it's kinda funny to me that I wrote that I play PC games p much exclusively since we didn't really have consoles growing up, and someone replies to it saying they prefer not to play PC because they like keeping work and pleasure separate
like do you only use your computer for work??? I mean I guess maybe some people do and watch stuff on TVs or their phones and use social media exclusively on their phones (or maybe social media doesn't count as pleasure, lmao) but that's SUCH a wild concept to me.

Game 239 - Portal 2 by Valve
Tumblr media
What did I think it was at first? I replayed Portal early in the blog and as much as I loved it the game isn't super replayable. I anticipate the same problem.
Tumblr media
How was the character creator? None, you're still Chell! She got cuter though.
Tumblr media
How was the game? So, I loaded it up and had a blast for the first few minutes! The portal mechanics are the same as the previous game, at least at first. However, the writing is a lot funnier and the game feels a lot more involved.
I really enjoyed experiencing the story, but found the actual puzzles to be incredibly simple. The first time through, I had motivation to stick with challenging puzzles to continue to unlock juicy story bits, but the puzzles weren't really challenging, just like when I played the first game.
It's a really good game! I loved it when it came out! The co-op is fantastic! but replaying it is Not Fun.
Tumblr media
What did I not love? I forgot that GlaDOS makes fun of you for being fat and adopted, neither of which pass as good things to make fun of you for in 2023.
Tumblr media
At 2 hours and $9.99, was it really worth it? Still good! If you're one of the 5 people who hasn't played this do it lol

Portal - Review
Tumblr media
Pros: Finally I have finished this gem of a game. I have never played this game or the sequel, but after the bundle was available on the Nintendo Switch I had to buy it. This game is something else, sometimes it feels so creepy when the eerie music kicks in. The levels are really great and sometimes really tricky to get through but not too hard. One of the best characters is by far GLaDOS. She is one of the most sarcastic, sassy and really creepy character. One of the best puzzle games that I have played and I cant wait to play the sequel.
Cons: I just wished for more levels because, I finished the game in about 4 or 5 hours or maybe less.
My final review is a 8.5/10
