Rachael Tarravechia (american, b. 1995), vanity, 2017
acrylic, glitter, rhinestones, paper, cheesecloth, foam on panel, 48 x 48 in
This piece by artist Rachael Tarravechia perfectly demonstrates a tone of serenity and silence while also using bright colors and uncommon techniques. Through my interpretation, Vanity purposefully leaves out a clear message or theme, but rather serves to challenge the audience with a serene image countered with contrasting colors and non-traditional materials such as glitter and rhinestones. This unique quirk is one i heavily identify with. On the surface, I believe I don’t have much of a purpose yet, however I am also aware of the fact that the very building blocks of my personality and being are uncommon yet packs immeasurable potential. In other words, while I don’t have a clear definition of myself, I definitely bring the attention toward what I’m made of. Vanity depicts an empty bathroom with non-traditional patterns and textures such as the flowery towel, patterned rug, and rabbit wallpaper. The piece also shows a resting rhinestone skull by the sink along with some makeup. The center of the piece shows a fern with what seems to be a snake wrapping around it and an empty beer can. At face value, this piece is thematically everywhere but nowhere. This contrast is what I believe to be the main charm of this piece and sparks a feeling of joy yet lonely, quiet yet loud, flat yet textured, meaningful yet meaningless. The two main eyecatchers are perfect examples. We have a rhinestone skull resting on a sink as a fashionable decoration for one to gaze at, while right below it lies a red-printed snake wrapped around another subject of decor. Beautiful but dangerous. These contradicting factors, while intentional or not, leaves the audience with a sense of respect for the artist and her bold decisions. All in all, Vanity is a wonderful piece and excellent depiction of my identity. Full of contradictions, in a good way.
