Steamy Saturday
"Creatures of the twilight . . . . driven to prowl their secret, forbidden underground."
"Here is the half-world of the invert . . . the bitter crises and reckless acts to which his irresistible urges drive him."
Julian, his friend, had broken away from this world of searing desire. . . . And then . . . he had committed a monstrous act. Page had to know why. . . . Because he himself, once, had been Julian's lover. . . ."
Oh, the steamy mystery! Dr. Tony Page is a successful psychiatrist, and when his friend Julian Leclerc, a handsome and talented young barrister -- and Tony's former lover -- is found dead, an apparent suicide, something doesn't seem right, and Tony sets out to uncover the truth. His quest takes him from the parties and pubs of the gay underworld of 1950s London to Scotland Yard and the House of Commons as he uses his shrewd and penetrating insight to find who or what was responsible for Julian's death.
Such is the premise of Rodney Garland's The Heart in Exile, a groundbreaking classic of gay fiction and considered the first gay detective story, published in this pulp paperback edition by Lion Library Editions in 1956. The novel, written by Hungarian émigré Adam de Hegedus (1906-1958) using the pen name Rodney Garland, was first published in London by W. H. Allen in 1953. It was a commercial success and was positively reviewed by mainstream publications, and it continues to maintain a significant presence in the queer cultural imagination. The cover art for this first American pulp edition is by noted American artist Arthur Shilstone (1922-2020).

BREONNA TAYLOR AND TYRE NICHOLS ARE REMINDERS OF LESSONS NEVER LEARNED.
"The public execution of Black folks will never be normal.”
The inhumane shootings, beatings and treatment by police officers are reminiscent of the history surrounding this nation’s Culture of Violence and Trauma impacting Black Americans. BY: GEORGE ADDISON “I can’t bring myself to watch yet another video, not because I don’t care, but because we’re all just a few videos away from becoming completely desensitized. Tommy Emmanuel’s “Accomplice Live!” - Great Music for a Great Cause
- Concert film airs during PBS fundraising campaigns
Listening to Tommy Emmanuel is always a good idea. Going to see him is an even better one.
And for those who can’t make it to the concert hall, there’s “Accomplice Live!,” captured Aug. 1, 2022, in Nashville for PBS stations nationwide and now showing during fundraising campaigns; check local listings.
As the name suggests, this film - like Emmanuel’s series of Accomplice EPs and LPs - features more than just the man considered by many to be the world’s-greatest acoustic guitarist.
Fellow guitarist Yasmin Williams and mandolinist Sierra Hull reprise their Accomplice Two recordings with the instrumentals “Mombasa” and “Precious Time,” respectively. Rodney Crowell joins Emmanuel for a duet on Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk Blues.” And Emmylou Harris leads Emmanuel, fiddler Eamon McLoughlin and guitarist Pat Bergerson through the Beatles’ “For No One” and Les Paul and Mary Ford’s “How High the Moon.”
All the guests are splendid, adding their own special hues to Emmanuel’s technicolor sound, which includes every guitar trick known to man and a few known only by this Chet Atkins-designated certified guitar player.
But Emmanuel shines brightest on his own, whether he’s sitting to play a harmonics-rich version of “Over the Rainbow” or if he’s standing to deliver his fab instrumental “Beatles Medley.”
And when he pulls out the brush and uses it and his hands to transform his axe into an implement of percussion, the drummers in the room will likely feel as emasculated as the guitarists.

Fantastic Fest 2022 Reviews!
Virtual film festivals are a godsend. After chasing this down over the course of a couple I was thrilled to finally get to dive into the documentary that explores David Lynch's relationship to The Wizard of Oz and the impact that connection has had on his work. Fantastical, horrifying, and heartfelt as the man himself.

Welcome to the Layton NPC Showdown!
This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.
GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.
WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.
WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.
WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.
WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔
WHICH CHARACTERS ARE INCLUDED, THEN?: Anyone who isn't an exception listed above that is in the profiles of the game! A full list is enclosed below.
WHEN WILL THE TOURNAMENT START?: More information forthcoming on that! I have to seed the bracket first :)
WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.
WHAT CRITERIA SHOULD I VOTE ON?: Whatever makes you happy :)
ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.
US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.
And now for a list of the entries! I didn't check all of these for inconsistencies, but I attempted to ascertain that I used the US versions. Some of them might be UK versions though because that's the version of the game I have (specifically Diabolical Box NPCs and Last Specter NPCs -- I know some of their US names but not all).

13 Days of Halloween: Day 3
Plot: You get caught while secretly trying to decorate the Atlantis base.
Pairing: John Sheppard x Gn!Reader
Warnings: None!
Words: 873
Tumblr media
-
Walking down the hall, with a garbage bag in your hand, you smiled innocently as some soldiers walked past. Watching them disappear around the corner, you quickly reached into the bag and pulled out a band of orange garland.
Draping it along a nearby bookcase, you quickly looked around as you made your way into Rodney's office.
You knew Rodney was at lunch, so this was the perfect moment. Pulling out a small ghost figurine, you placed it on his desk, before tapping it on the head.
Next, you placed an orange wreath on the door. Grabbing another garland, you got on your tip-toes, and began to drape it along the top of his bookcase.
Hearing someone clear their throat behind you, you froze, arms up, garland still in hand.
Slowly looking back over your shoulder, you saw John leaning against the doorway, watching you with a smirk on his face.
You smiled innocently "Hello" you said in a sing-song voice.
His smile widened "Hello." He repeated, before he stepped into the room "So, you're the phantom decorator."
Dropping the garland where it was, you turned to face him, arms behind back, as you rocked on your feet.
"That depends on what you're gonna do about it if I am."
He hummed as he walked further into the room, placing his hands behind his back like you had.
Stopping right in front of you, he leaned in a bit and whispered "I'm not gonna do anything. In fact, I was gonna ask if you needed help."
A smile slowly spread across your face "Oh you were, were you?"
He nodded softly "Yep. I too think this place needs a little re-decorating. It is the holiday season after all."
"Well then-" reaching into the bag and pulling out a strand of purple ghost garland, you draped it around the back of his shoulders with a smile. "Get busy, Rodney finishes his lunch at 12:30."
Smiling, John leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to your cheek as he grabbed the garland "I had a feeling it was you ya' know. You're the one person I can imagine doing it. But, how did you decorate Carson's office? It happened when we were off world."
You smiled and shrugged, refusing to answer.
You didn't need to decorate Carson's office. All you had to do was leave a bag of decorations by his door and he would do the work himself. He said it was the "phantom decorator" solely so he would not get chastised for having done it himself. But John didn't need to know that.
John squinted "Alright, I get it. I'm not the first person to help you."
"Actually, you're the only person who knows about me." You admitted.
John watched you curiously, as you smiled gleefully, before placing a fake spider in Rodney's desk drawer for him to discover later.
After Rodney's office was well and truly festive, you eyed John. "Do you think we could get into Weir's office?"
John let out a huff of air "Now you're just playing with fire."
You smiled and shrugged your shoulder "It's the last place I have yet to add any decorations. My magnum opus, perhaps. You don't have to go with me."
He shook his head and smiled "I might regret this, but, let's do it."
As you and John approached Weirs office, you looked around cautiously. You couldn't hear anyone, and Weir's office light was off, signaling her absence.
Jiggling the handle, you locked eyes as the door creaked open.
Just as you were about to go in, a head popped around the corner of the doorway.
"What are you doing?"
You let out a startled yelp, as John let out a low gasp. Ronon smiled happily at the two of you, amused that he scared you.
You glanced down at the decoration filled garbage bag you had dropped, before looking at John. You both looked at Ronon, unsure of what to do.
You shrugged lightly "Uhhh, breaking into Weirs office to decorate it for Halloween?"
Ronon looked down at the bag at your feet "So you two weren't trying to find a secret place to make-out or something?"
"What?" You and John questioned at the same time, bewildered.
Ronon looked back at the bag before he turned away. "Lame. Have fun I guess."
You and John shared another bewildered look, before John stepped out and called out in a half-whisper "Don't tell anyone!"
Ronon waved his hand dismissively, but you were both sure he wouldn't say anything.
Quickly rushing into Weirs office, John locked it behind you. You looked around the darkened room, beginning to plan where and what to decorate.
"You know..." John began as he leaned in closer to you, as you looked over at him "This would be a good time and place to secretly make out."
You rolled your eyes and smacked him in the arm, while repressing a giggle.
"Ow." He chuckled as he rubbed his arm "Just a thought."
"Hurry up and decorate before she comes back. If we make it out of this safely, you might get your wish."
"Don't gotta tell me twice." John said playfully as he began to dig out the decorations.

Art/fic trade with @annwayne!!
A bit of flirty Todd/Teyla in a beach setting. <3
Read at AO3:
Or under the cut:
The sun was a comfort on her skin as Teyla lay back in her chair, relaxing for the first time in what felt like ages, soaking in the warmth.
Weeks of rain and fog had shrouded Atlantis, her team's dour mood not helped by an overlong mission to P3S-403 where the town they visited was still held in the depths of winter. Returning to a break in the weather and warmer temperatures was most appreciated. Many of the city's residents had journeyed to the nearest section of the mainland to make the most of it.
Teyla shifted on the towel she'd spread over the chair John called a "deck chair" and let the balmy breeze carry the distant sounds of her teammates and fellow citizens of Atlantis past her. Ronon and John were having some sort of debate about surfing in between their actual surfing. Rodney was discussing, somewhat stridently, with Carson the potential venomous properties of a creature he'd found. Farther down the beach, Doctors Cole and Zelenka were talking and fishing, along with Major Lorne and Lieutenant Rivers. Teyla, Amelia, and Marie had been swimming earlier- Teyla amused by the Earth tradition of swimming while clothed in a bikini- and had now taken over a trio of the deck chairs that had been set out, relaxing after their exertion. Teyla was comfortable, by her hand was a drink Amelia called a tequila sunrise, and she was warm and drowsy.
The warmth shining down on her suddenly went cold and dark. Teyla cracked open an eye with a frown.
Todd was looming over her, scowling.
"You are blocking the sun," she informed him.
His scowl deepened. "If you do not control your expedition leader, I may be forced to take drastic action."
Teyla blinked. She was slightly intrigued, but not enough to actually get up from her comfortable seat. "That is not a good reason to block my sunlight," she retorted.
Todd grumbled under his breath but shifted to the side. Amelia made a sound of wordless protest, as he was now blocking the sun from reaching her. Teyla lowered her sunglasses to raise an eyebrow at Todd.
He snarled, softly, and dropped into a crouch beside her. He looked around, as if feeling hunted.
Teyla found herself now curious in spite of herself. "What is the problem with Mister Woolsey?"
"He is insisting that I accept a garland of foul-smelling leaves in recognition of the accord between our peoples."
Teyla had the garland of leaves and flowers that Woolsey had given her currently wound around her head. "Such as this?" she asked, touching her crown.
Todd narrowed his eyes and inhaled. "Yes," he admitted. "Though yours does not smell quite so terrible." The sensory pits near his nose fluttered. "The scent is actually not unpleasant when combined with your own."
Teyla smirked. "So complimentary. He must have you quite unsettled."
Todd scowled at her grumpily, and ducked down further behind her chair as Mister Woolsey walked past them and down to an area where several people were grilling and cooking.
Teyla rolled her eyes. "There is a very simple way to get him to stop," she observed.
"And what is that?" Todd asked haughtily.
"To accept the garland from him of course. Perhaps then he would leave you alone."
Todd made a desperate, wounded sound deep in his throat.
Teyla sat up, no longer able to relax. "You wouldn't have to keep it if it smells so terrible," she observed.
Todd sighed. He was sitting on the ground behind her chair now, as deep in shadow as he could get. His eyes were narrowed as he peered up at her. "I could not accept such a token and then discard it." He looked away, uneasy, as if the confession revealed more than he wished.
Teyla softened. “Come then.” She stood from her chair and knotted the towel around her waist, its thin material wafting around her legs like a skirt. She took her drink in her hand and walked past the chairs, making her way along the rocky ridge where they had been soaking in the sun and up to a path that led under the cover of nearby trees.
Todd followed her eagerly, and when her bare feet stepping on broken branches and seed pods from the trees made her hiss and stumble, he offered his left hand to help her balance.
She didn’t thank him, but said, “The trail opens up again further ahead.” And even as she spoke the rocky trail they followed became covered with loose sand. The trees to their right were only small specimens now, their roots twisting through the sand as the ground in that direction sloped away down to the water in a long smooth line. Teyla's feet sank into the sand; it was hot on the top, where the sun hit, but cooler and moist underneath when she dug her feet in.
The trail continued along the high rocky ridge, but below them the sandy slope led to a small cove, and Teyla made her way down the side of the dune to where the sand was level on the water's shoreline. The sand here, and the rolling in of the waves, was undisturbed by any others, and only the distant sight of surfers and swimmers, and the occasional shouts from her friends and coworkers, prevented the cove from being entirely private.
Teyla arranged her towel-skirt beneath her and sat down, sipping her drink.  "I hope you did not get too much sand in your boots descending the dune," she said with more amusement than sympathy to Todd.
He hummed thoughtfully, pulling off one boot and tipping it upside down to pour out what was definitely a large amount of sand. "Your plea appears to have been ignored," he observed.
Teyla laughed. "You are not exactly dressed to enjoy a day at the beach. Why did you come?"
His eyes rested on her. "Because you invited me." He cocked his head. "Why did you invite me?"
"To see if you would come," she admitted. "And here you are." She looked at him levelly, her sunglasses sliding down her nose so that she could look at him over the top of their dark lenses.
"Well, my queen commanded my presence." He smirked. "How could I do anything other than attend her whim?"
Teyla snorted.
Todd's smirk spread, and he sat down beside her in the sand.
"That will not help prevent you from getting sand in your boots," Teyla warned him.
"It seems an attempt to separate the sand from my person is doomed," Todd replied. He gazed back at her, amused despite any discomfort.
"I don't suppose Wraith have beach clothes," Teyla observed.
Todd huffed and said wryly, "That would be accurate." He rubbed rough grains of sand between the pads of his fingers sadly. "Though it is unfortunate as well. Our normal attire does not do well in such an environment."
Teyla leaned back on one arm, braced behind her against the sand, and held her drink in her other hand, rolling the ice inside so that it clicked against the sides of the glass. "You could adopt a popular tradition and wear nothing at all," she suggested.
Todd drew himself up as if offended at the suggestion, but his smile grew sly and he leaned back on his left hand, mirroring Teyla's posture. "Would that please you?"
"Me?" Teyla held her drink against her cheek, her skin feeling quite warm against the glass's icy surface. "We were discussing your comfort."
"I am quite comfortable," he replied, grinning at her.
"Oh? Well, if we’ve exhausted that topic and there’s nothing else to discuss, maybe it's time for a swim." She raised an eyebrow at him. "Are you planning on swimming?"
"I'll have you know Wraith are excellent swimmers."
"I am certain," Teyla replied with false sincerity. "Though I feel that that your normal aura of threat would be difficult for you to maintain with your apparel sopping wet and squeaking with every step."
Todd threw back his head and laughed. "What is it you say, touché? I will concede your point. As you've won, I suppose I must divest myself of an article of clothing?"
I believe you are thinking of poker," Teyla observed.
"Am I?" Todd affected surprise. "Hmm. So, then you agree I don't owe you a forfeit?"
"I didn't say that." Teyla's eyes shone. "Perhaps you should double the forfeit, as you confused the stakes."
Todd laid a hand to his chest as if wounded by her remark. "I? Confused? I am quite certain that it was you who mentioned the wrong game."
Teyla blinked in surprise. "Are you suggesting I should be the one to take off my clothes?"
"If that is what you wish, my queen," Todd agreed eagerly.
Stymied, Teyla set her drink on the ground. She stood up, her skirt clutched around her. Then she released the material and it fluttered to the ground. "I am going swimming," she stated.
"As you say, my queen." Todd cocked his head. "Though, surely it is dangerous to swim alone."
It's dangerous to swim with Wraith," she retorted. "Especially one who will not admit when they have lost."
Very well." Todd pulled off his other boot, wiggling his toes in the sand while making a face. He stood, undoing his coat as he moved to let it fall from his arms. He had a sleeveless shirt of a thin material that he wore under it; Teyla was certainly not watching the way it clung to his muscles. He continued, pulling the shirt over his head and pulling his long legs free of his long, tight leather pants, under which he wore nothing at all.
"Am I now properly attired for swimming?" he asked her innocently, then affected a deep concern. "Though I heard one of the others mention sunburn and I wondered if I should be concerned. I have not bared so much skin in a long time."
Teyla took off her sunglasses, tossing them down on her towel, and then looked him up and down. Mostly down. She met his eyes. "It's not that much," she assured him. "I wouldn't worry."
Todd laughed easily again. He moved past her and into the water first, moving like a creature entirely comfortable with that environment.
Teyla huffed a small sigh of annoyance to hide her smile and focused on swimming. The water was warmer near the beach where it was only as shallow as her ankles, but quickly became cold when it was deep enough to swim in. She swam out to the mouth of the cove, about 200 yards, to where she could see the surfers quite well beyond the outcropping that set apart this cove. She paused there and her feet, treading under the water, struck sand. She set both feet down and found herself standing on a sandbar, the water only coming up to her collarbone.
She'd seen no sign of Todd since entering the water, but, once she stopped, he surfaced near her. The droplets of water on his skin caught the sunlight, shining like jewels. He turned toward her grinning.
"Are you enjoying your swim?" he purred, the sound warming her in a way that should not have been possible.
"The view was excellent, until recently," she replied.
He caught the amusement in her expression and his grin widened in response. He lifted his hands out of the water to display a fistful of shells of a familiar bivalve in his left hand. "I have heard these are quite tasty."
Teyla reached out to take them from him, examining the shells.
Todd stood up on the sand bar, looming over her as he stepped close. His eyes flashed, without any aid from the sunlight. "It is said they are prized for their amorous properties." He grinned.
Teyla handed the shells back to him. His smile faded, though he did not let any true disappointment show.
"Take them back to the beach," Teyla said. "We can eat them there." She met his eyes, then looked away as if indifferent. "I would like to enjoy them while finishing my drink."
He grinned again. "Yes, my queen." The words were teasing, but his manner was eager. He dove back into the water and swam a circle around her before vanishing into the darkness of the ocean.
When he couldn't see, Teyla smirked. She dove back into the water as well, headed for the beach.

Musical Theme
Country-If You’re Going Through Hell(Rodney Atkins)
youtube
Hip Hop/Rap-Lose yourself(Eminem)
youtube
Rock-Whatever it Takes(Imagine Dragons)
youtube
Jazz-Over the Rainbow(Judy Garland)
youtube
“If You’re Going Through Hell” by Rodney Atkins, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, “Whatever it Takes” by Imagine Dragons, and “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland each represent a motivational theme. This theme relates not only to my daily life, but to everyone’s daily life. Everyone needs motivation to get through life’s daily struggles. For me this type of music means a lot because it’s encouragement for me in my daily life. I have many goals set for myself including educational, fitness, health, and career goals. To me, the motivational side of music helps me through these goals, and the setbacks that may come. All in all, motivational music may help through daily struggles or even the biggest of storms. It always gives me a better mindset, and helps me to stay strong when I feel my weakest. “If You’re Going Through Hell” by Rodney Atkins is a song written about getting through the struggles in life. The refrain in this song is a great representation of the motivational theme. The refrain goes as follows, “If you're going through hell, Keep on going, don’t slow down, If you’re scared don’t show it, You might get out, Before the devil even knows you’re there.”  Although the entire song is a great representation of the motivational theme, the refrain best represents this theme. The tone and the melody of this song is also a great representation, as it is very upbeat. The rhythm and the tempo are very high energy. “Lose Yourself” by Eminem also has a very upbeat rhythm and melody, although it is in a different way than the country hit “If You’re Going Through Hell.” Given that “Lose Yourself” is a rap song, its rhythm is the most notable element of the song. The rhythm is very powerful, as if it is a representation of the motive behind the song. In this song Eminem expresses his own emotions and passions. The tone of his voice expresses these emotions very well to the listeners. It is obvious that this song is tied very closely to his own life experiences. Another great example of motivational music is the rock song written by Imagine Dragons called “Whatever It Takes.” This song seems to be focused more on goal orientation than it is about making it through the struggles in life. Ironically, although the theme seems to be a bit contradictory, it is just a different type of motivation that it strikes. This is the type of song that is likely to strike motivation to workout or achieve a goal. It is motivational in both its message and the rhythm. The musical structure of this song has sounds that are repeated and recognizable, this could be referred to as theme and variation. The rhythm of the song highlights the highs and lows throughout the song, as the melody changes with the tone of the singer’s voice. Finally, “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland is a softer motivational song. The rhythm is very gentle, with a striking message. The song’s message beautifully presents the theme of the song by comparing our struggles and their resolutions to the other side of the rainbow. The song proclaims in the refrain, “Somewhere over the rainbow, Way up high, There’s a land that I heard of, Once in a lullaby.” This is “land” that the writer is referring to the backside of life’s troubles.

Tyre Nichols Death: Body Camera Footage Released
By Noreen Karam, University of Virginia Tech, Class of 2024
January 27, 2023
Tumblr media
The city of Memphis released graphic video footage on Friday January 27th of the violent encounter between Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, and the five police officers charged with murder in his beating death after a traffic stop earlier this month.
One video clip shows officers dragging Nichols from the driver's seat of his car as he yells, "Damn, I didn't do anything ... I am just trying to go home," and force him to the ground as they order him to lay on his stomach, then squirt him in the face with pepper spray. Nichols breaks free, scrambles to his feet, and sprints off down a road with officers in pursuit, firing stun guns at him. A separate video shows a subsequent struggle after officers catch up with Nichols again and are beating him. Two officers are seen holding him down as a third one kicks him and a fourth delivers blows with what appears to be a rod before another punches Nichols. The four segments of highly anticipated footage from police body-worn and dashboard cameras were posted online Friday evening a day after the officers were charged with second-degree murder, assault, kidnapping, official misconduct, and oppression.
The officers, all Black, had already been dismissed from the police department last Saturday following their Jan. 7 confrontation with Nichols after pulling him over. He succumbed to his injuries and died three days later while hospitalized. Memphis police chief Cerelyn Davis and lawyers for Nichols' family who watched the video with his relatives before it was released, warned that the images were brutal and likely to cause outrage, while appealing to the public for calm.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Nichols' family, said the last words on the video were Nichols crying out for his mother. "No mother should go through what I am going through right now, no mother, to lose their child to the violent way that I lost my child," Tyre Nichols' mother, RowVaughn Wells, said on Friday. The footage was likely to transform Nichols, the father of a 4-year-old described as an affable, accomplished skateboarder who recently enrolled in a photography class, into the next face of the U.S. racial justice movement.
Raised in Sacramento, California, Nichols moved before the coronavirus pandemic to the Memphis area, where he lived with his mother and stepfather and worked at FedEx, taking a break each day to come home for a meal prepared by his mother. Nichols' family and President Joe Biden have appealed for protests to stay peaceful in Memphis, a city of 628,000 where nearly 65% of residents are Black. Schools were scheduled to close early, and Saturday morning events were canceled.
Biden spoke with RowVaughn Wells and Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather, on Friday afternoon to express his condolences, the White House said, adding that it was coordinating with relevant government agencies in case protests turn violent. Nichols' death marked the latest high-profile instance of police officers accused of using excessive force in the deaths of Black people and other minorities in recent years. These have been publicly condemned as systemic racism in the U.S. criminal justice system. Protests under the banner of the "Black Lives Matter" movement against racial injustice erupted globally following the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, a Black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. Antonio Romanucci, another lawyer for Nichols' family, told National Public Radio in an interview on Friday that Nichols was a strong supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and "basically died for his own cause."
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday announced a federal civil rights investigation into Nichols' death, while law enforcement agencies in some major cities, including New York, Atlanta, and Washington, said they were preparing for possible protests following the video's release. The White House said it held a conference call with mayors from several cities to brief them on federal preparations for the anticipated release of the footage and asked the mayor to remain in regular contact in the coming days.
Police have described the circumstances of Nichols' arrest in vague terms. Even Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy, who sought the officers' indictment, was circumspect when announcing the charges. After Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, "an altercation" ensued in which officers doused him with pepper spray, and Nichols tried to flee on foot, Mulroy said. "There was another altercation at a nearby location at which the serious injuries were experienced by Mr. Nichols." Davis said her department has not yet been able determine whether there was probable cause for the officers to pull Nichols over for reckless driving, a traffic stop which set in motion the violent events that followed.
Crump said the speed at which the criminal charges were brought against the officers - fewer than three weeks after Nichols' death - should be a standard for police-involved killings. In some other high-profile cases, such as the police killing of Laquan McDonald in Chicago in 2014, more than a year elapsed before the release of police video and the filing of charges. "We want to proclaim that this is the blueprint going forward for any time any officers, whether they be Black or white, will be held accountable," Crump said. "No longer can you tell us we got to wait six months to a year.” Lawyers for the family also called on the police department to disband the special SCORPION unit focused on violent street crime to which at least some of the officers were assigned. Davis has said the department will review SCORPION and other specialized units. Crump compared the encounter to the 1991 videotaped beating of Black motorist Rodney King by four police officers whose subsequent acquittal of criminal charges sparked days of riots in Los Angeles.
All five officers - Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith - were fired from the police force on Jan. 21 after an internal investigation found they breached multiple department policies, including use of excessive force. Four of the officers have posted bail and have been released from jail, a CBS affiliate reported on Friday. A lawyer for Mills, Blake Ballin, said it might be another two weeks before the defendants make their initial court appearances.
