Sooooooooooooo...
First off - @wethatkindoforc, here’s to breaking my horrid tradition of posting birthday art (for you AND Jer) late with a special present ON TIME! Happy birthday lady! I hope the weekend’s full of good beer and good times for you, too!
I do hope you like it! I saw the meme it’s based off of and showed you a while ago and it was just too perfect. Got some minor hardline shading in there (didn’t want to go too crazy so you may need to look for it some), and Rook looks more tired than she’s supposed to but the ears say it all.
Also, shading hair is stupid amounts of fun. I have a new favorite thing.
Happy Birthday Jade, and here’s to another year of these two putting up with eachothers bullshit!

Quick little sketchy of one of the most romantic things Rook has said to Kaamos.

💭💭
Of Rook: “She wanted to have a random heart to heart chat earlier, for no other reason than to get to know me. Doesn’t she know me by now? Maybe she thinks I don’t trust her still, after a year of working together. I trust her with my life. I just... I’m not able to trust her with my heart. For all her kindness and understanding, she’s also one of the most volatile people I know. It’s not a risk I’m willing to take. Not now.”Of Odisse: “Who the fuck is this and what the fuck does she want from me? I keep waiting for her to show her real hand but all I get is enthusiastic apologies. Mechari don’t apologise. And shit, now she knows I’m highborn, which of course makes me even more interesting to her. I’ve got to be careful.”

Shadow of the Empress - Update II
Yesterday was the seventh annual hoverbike race at Hellrose Raceway! Fantastic Enterprises took the spotlight in commercial breaks instead of Protostar this year, and it was a thrilling race to be sure! Out of thirty-four racers the favorites to win the year’s biggest hoverbike race were the Humans Grant ‘Gladius’ Williams, and Jenny ‘Firestrike’ Brightmist, Granok Mason ‘Avalanche’ Slater, Aurin Mimi ‘Sugarpop’ Dewdrop, and the Ekose Otis ‘Papa’ Beeko. The FE crew and friends joined Jet Hellmatite in the VIP booth this year. The race began with a clean start, and the racers were off with an impressive roar that thrilled the crowds packed into the grandstands. Jenny, thanks to her placement from her qualifying times, started the race at seventh, and quickly pulled ahead. It was a riveting race, with two crashes, and the final third of the race saw the two human favorites battling for first place. Nearing the final stretch Grant, who was pulling into the lead, risked an attempt to throw Jenny off course. It sent both racers into a dangerous spin, one that Jenny barely managed to use to her advantage to take the lead and win the race! Meanwhile, in the VIP booth Jet was a source of amusement several times as he scolded and coached the two racers that he managed. Near the end of the race it was Jeremy Murdoch who saw something amiss -- a sandy blond head and a flashy marauder’s coat that he recognized. The wanted Marauder Captain, Seth Blackstar who disappeared as quickly as he came. Shouting and cursing, Jeremy rushed from the booth into the wild, cheering crowds, he was followed by Rook, Seeker, Elrabin, and Lady. The remaining twenty-nine racers blazed across the finish line, and the bikes joined together to drive a slow cool down lap both for themselves and the enjoyment of the spectators. Too few seemed to notice the small aircraft appearing out of the head of the desert to the west. Suddenly not even a hundred yards from the track the sound of a cannon ripped through the happy chaos of the racetrack. A spiked marauder ballista bolt shot towards the track, tearing through the back of Jenny’s bike, and the resulting explosion threw a dozen riders. Lady Starheart fired a brilliant shot at the attacking vessel, killing it’s pilot and sending it spinning away to be finished off by raceway fighters. As emergency personnel rushed to the wounded bikers, Granok and Mordesh guards and attendants saw to the safety of everyone in attendance. Elrabin Lichengrove having spotted a marauder fighter slipping away in the distance, attacked with a keen use of espernetics, significantly damaging the fleeing vessel. He then took off after it in attempt to try and find where it was going. By then Jeremy was already demanding to be let through, and Rook Vlakovian certainly put the wills and loyalty of the guards keeping spectators from the burning wreck of bikes to the test. Seeker Eldanhand was the only one to slip through, using a surprising espernetic shove to force back a Granok guard and rush through the crowd of nurses, staff, and racers to get to Jenny just as the unconscious and wounded young woman was being whisked to the medical ward. Inarious Morovichi, the second of the raceway’s two owners appeared then to motion for the crew to meet him below. When the small group reached the ward, the medical bay was filled with wounded racers, and the waiting area filled with worried family and friends. The medical staff rushed about, and among the fifteen injured, two were pronounced dead (two gentlemen, one Human, one Grumple). Morovichi was nowhere in sight. Jeremy was allowed in (no thanks to the efforts of Lady), though much to Rook’s dismay and fury she was not allowed in for the time being. Jenny’ is currently unconscious. Somehow she sustained only minor lacerations and burns, road rash, several broken and cracked ribs, and a leg fracture, though there is a concern that she has internal bleeding. After her ruined helmet was carefully removed, the doctor delivered the woman’s necklace and a red, cracked FE pin to the watching Seeker and Jeremy, saying that she is very, very lucky to be alive.

Day Sixteen Character Thing
Are there any blood relatives that your character is particularly close with, besides the immediate ones? Cousins, Uncles, Grandfathers, Aunts, et cetera. Are there any others that your character practically considers a blood relative?
Elenia In another life Elenia was very fond of her grandmother on her mother’s side. The only other scientist in the family, Babub (as Elenia was raised to call her), was an alchemist until she died when Elenia was about fourteen, an early figure who took her frequently for holidays when her parents were too busy to collect her from school. Her death shook the teenager severely, putting her off the concept of the alchemists. After all, what good is anyone who can’t fix something as simple as cancer? “Well all my family are dead so. No.”
Lady Starheart Lady was never raised among any extended family, save for her aunt (who she always suspected was, in fact, a great aunt based on the ages alone). As much as she idolized the woman they weren’t particularly close, Lady can probably count on her hands the number of times she saw her through childhood and adolescence. But she did adopt a family as she got older, the Mordesh Rook always served as an interested matronly figure (unlike her own mother, who always seemed a little confused by the girl) and in adulthood she very much considers her dear Draken friend Yautja to be something like the father she never had growing up.  “I mean, it’s like they say, the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. You know what I mean?”

Bit of supplemental material that I’m mostly just plopping down here so I can link it in a blog entry. This body scan took place roughly a week before the crew explored the Exo-lab in Wilderrun.
Credit to @aldridge-asset for writing up this report. Thank you soooo much for the help, lady! <3

Food for Thought: Nightmares
Marko awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of screaming. It was an agonized noise, the sort of thing you only heard come from the mouths of people who thought that they were about to die. He recognized it immediately, and with rush of urgency he rolled off the couch in the living room and scrambled into the kitchen for a chef knife out of instinct.
The fear came next, a sinking feeling that settled in bottom of his lungs like air too dense to breath. Across the bunker, in the synthetic lighting of the medical alcove, he saw the source of the commotion. Kaamos, with a frenzied look in his eyes, gnawed on the muscle of Rook’s shoulder. His razor sharp teeth sliced easily through her skin. He struggled against his bonds, thrashing wildly until he broke free and overcame her with violent ferocity. Blood smattered across the glass paneling.
Lights flicked on in the bunker. The other crew members jumped into action, shouting orders and taking up weaponry, but it was too late. He watched, frozen with horror as Elenia advanced swiftly with a loaded syringe. Kaamos lunged at her, tearing at her face with ravenous hunger. She drove the needle into the side of his neck, but his fingers were in her eyes, clawing them out and devouring them like a starving animal.
Shots fired. The bunker security system started blaring and red emergency lights flashed ominously. Jenny stood the top of the steps with her guns pointed at the mordesh. They weren’t mordesh anymore, but creatures much darker.
A shot hit Kaamos in the shoulder, and then the head. He hit the ground hard, twitching. But Rook came at Jenny with a snarl, tackling her to the floor. Seeker screamed, joining the fray, but it took only moments for the ravenous to kill them too and feast on their organs. Gypsum hurried over to smack them away, like the were some pesky vultures feeding on a carcass.
Breathing hard, Marko found himself suddenly armed with a syringe of mortalus instead of a chef knife.
“Elenia!” he shouted, running to look for her. Ravenous he didn’t recognize emerged from the walls and the cracks in the ground, taking down Rafael where he cowered in a corner and wrestling Bhadra up against a storage container. As he continued towards the medical alcove, the lights flickered and faded into darkness. The scenery shifted around him until he was surrounded by wisps of shadow and the echoing cries of his friends. “Elenia!?”
“Marko.”
He spun around and there she was, her face bloodied and raw. Where her eyes used to be, there were two gaping holes. Suddenly, she charged at him with flashing teeth. Her fingers closed around his neck, squeezing the last breath out of him.
He woke up with a jolt, gasping for air and clinging a pillow to his chest. It took him a few moments to realize where he was, in the darkness of the bunker. It was a dream, he reassured himself. Just a dream. Everyone is fine. Elenia is fine. Elenia. She was busy. She was with Kaamos. But he wanted to hold her. He sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes with the palms of his hands - they were trembling. His hair fell into his face, all tangled from writhing in his sleep.
With a huff of breath he stood and wandered into the kitchen to pace. He wanted to cook, but he didn’t want to wake the others with the clanging of pots and pans. Instead, he hunched over the counter with his datachron and began meal planning. They had a lot of vegetables in the greenhouse below, and he couldn’t let them go to waste.

A notice for all primary Fantastic Enterprises staff aboard the Emma's Nebula is issued...
By personal order of Rook Vlakovian, First Mate of the Emma’s Nebula, a mandatory vacation of one week (pending the Captain’s approval) is seen to be issued soon. Events have caused the crew much mental, physical and emotional strain. This shall not impact any kind of time off banks allotted to each employee.
A personal addition is made to the post: Time away may prove to revive crew moral and overall health, not to mention they deserve it, sir. It’s been one thing after another. Half the time they’re itching for distance between them. It’s just been too much. Please consider this seriously, from your friend and First Mate, sir.

To Hunger
When I fall ill They laugh They insinuate and tease There he goes again Defying doctor's orders like an Aurin in rut They do not know what it is To hunger for that which poisons you They do not see that Loving you Is the only risk I ever take Into which I must pour all of me Every hungering inch To offer up my century of living For your lethal lips Ha ha Look at him He cannot control himself Yet here I am Holding myself down tight enough to bleed At the mere sight of you I do not mind I cannot blame them When innocence is their only crime They have never spent a night In your circled arms They cannot know how bleak is the world outside of them

Shadow of the Empress: Update III
Official condition of Jenny ‘Firestrike’ Brightmist: Deceased Only alive thanks to the young woman’s ingenuity and forethought to wear a pin that created an invisible protective shield around her, the doctor left the unconcious Jenny alone with Seeker Eldanhand and Jeremy Murdoch. Courtesy of the privacy of her hospital room, Jeremy was able to use his Primal abilities to almost completely heal the young woman. Later joined by Elrabin Lichengrove and Lady Starheart, the small group decided it was best that, for the time being, the public should think the engineer to be deceased. This would both ensure Jenny safety from the Marauder, Seth Blackstar, and give them an edge whenever they would move to take him out. Planning to take out the Marauder was one thing, finding him was another. Elrabin, Jeremy and Seeker made their way to the boarder between Malgrave and Southern Grimvault in attempt to find the broken thruster Elrabin had discovered days before. Distracted from their course, the trio were forced to return empty handed after Elrabin was injured. Meanwhile Jenny and First Mate Rook Vlakovian had a meaningful discussion and it was agreed that Rook would come with them when the time to strike at Blackstar was at hand. The following day the crew was thrown a surprise when Peter Crowe, relation to the Algoroc gang, Seth’s right hand man, and Jenny’s ex showed up at the front gate. Asking for Jeremy, he was cornered by the crew and threatened. Motivated by looking down the barrel of Jeremy’s pistol, Rook’s Stalker claws, and the sudden appearance of the Granok Jak behind him, Peter revealed that he was washing his hands of Seth Blackstar. The Marauder captain dealing in human trafficking, and Strain experiments planned to be tested on some of the prisoners, Peter wanted no part of it and warned the crew to steer clear of the man.
Meanwhile Jenny, who had heard Peter was near, was forcibly detained by Elrabin who had intercepted the enraged young woman with his espernetics before she could blow her cover.
Peter was escorted away by Rook. Once out of sight of the Valley, the Mordesh knocked the man unconscious, and disposed of him in an undisclosed, remote location.  Back in the Valley a heated argument took place, and tensions only lessened after the crew moved to the Crash House and began planning their next move. Jenny shared the layout of the Starship, Empress. With their new knowledge it was no longer a mission to merely destroy Seth and his ship, but a rescue and containment mission. Thanks to an espernetic tracking bug placed on Peter by Elrabin, the man would be apprehended by Rook, potentially paralyzed by Elenia, and be detained in the holding cell to for further information.

A Nice Place to Visit
The comet passed over Pallasova in a burst of light to the cheers of the crowd. It is natural the comet should have passed here; the Enclave of the Grand Duke Constantin Ivanovich is among the wealthiest and fairest of all of Grismara, situated on a great trading port, gazing back to the ancient steppe where merchants in the distant past traded silk and gold and sickness in equal measure. It is the Grand Duke’s hand that decorates the invitations to this fine ball, where the tall, delicate forms of the Mordesh swirl together to and fro in a great dance. The musicians play, the dancers dance, the servants sweep to and fro bearing plates and glasses and all the accouterments of simple happiness.
The guests come from everywhere. They come from Myrtau --the daughter of a Merchant Lord and an Alchemist, Rook Vlakovian, whose name carried all manner of strange power. They come from the frigid north--Kaamos Ivuneq, who studies the ice, and his sister, Yora, who watches the elaborate play of life in the south with scorn. And they come from Pallasova--Elenia Volescu, who has run Volsova Labs for ten years, and in that time gathered laurels from Grismara and distant Cassus. Beside her, Marko Lovas watches the food like a hawk. He keeps a close eye on competitors, this famous chef.
They cross paths over the evening, in and out of each other’s lives, strangers. What does the north have to give these southerners but warnings of bad frosts? What does the glamor of Pallasova know of the desperation of its own underbelly? Kaamos waits for a woman who will never come. He watches the crowd, His sister is already bored of this place. Marko drifts toward the kitchen and Elenia to the food where Rook waits.
The room pauses as a man trips over his own legs on the floor.
Give him air, cry the dancers, swirling around. Give him a moment. But he is sick. He grabs for the dancers, digs nails in, digs teeth in. Kaamos goes to help, and is bitten.
The room is in chaos. There are screams now all over. The revelers feel sick. They clog the doors, making easy targets as more take ill. But there is another place. Elenia points it out as some among the others realize this is not real at all. But what sort of dream is this that would wake the dead so?
Down, down to the Alchemist’s laboratory as Kaamos turns feverish. His sister looks after him. Rook knows she will marry him, someday--but not now, not here. For now, she mixes the chemical components together. For now, she listens as Kaamos struggles to remember what each component is called.
Marko has wandered off. There is another room here, this one unnerving. Three sickly Mordesh stand in containment, their bodies mutilated with strange liquids, their flesh rotting. Marko steps up to one. He looks knowledgeably over the tanks, emptying the precious, clear liquid from it to the ground. In the doorway, Elenia watches. She looks on in confusion as he raises his arm, lets the creature bite him. This is nothing she has seen before, but she knows what it means for someone to be bitten. She has seen Kaamos in the other room--Kaamos, whose eyes flash with sudden hunger. She raises the pistol in her purse to threaten Marko as he turns.
The shot misses. It strikes the Ravenous creature. Marko turns to the other one, He begins to free it.
Chaos. A shot finds its mark, and Marko’s chest blooms with blood. Rook strikes down the Ravenous with great blades. There is weeping. Elenia mourns the dying Marko. and Rook attempts to put him out of his misery. It does not work, and through some memory, some vague press, Elenia puts together a syringe of death to destroy the poisoned body on the ground.
Kaamos looks around the room. There is a third Ravenous in containment down here. She is familiar. Kaamos loved her, once. He loves her here still, perhaps. Corin calls to him, and her face contorts. She is dead already, but he can almost touch her through the containment field. His hand matches hers for a moment, and then Yora pulls him away.
Rook is angry now--angry that no one will listen, angry at the weeping woman on the floor, so unlike herself. But there are other angry things. There is a banging on the door.
The dead have come.
The metal twists before the weight of them. The still living Mordesh gather around. Rook tries to slap some sense into Elenia, though it is useless. Elenia waits, content with the inevitable.
The others move forward. They watch the door bend and open… The dead will come through, and they will fight.
They must fight.

Ice and Isolation: Guilt
Yora sat in the crash house, curled up in front of the fire. She tried to sleep but she could not. How could anyone? A sense of foreboding kept her awake, with images of shattering vitalus compartments echoing in her mind.
She kept replaying her conversation with Kaamos in her head, and the way he looked at her with such unwavering affection, despite everything. Of course he had always known, but she felt too ashamed to say anything aloud, until now. It was crucial that no one else knew how she felt. They would hate her, they would not understand. Only Kaamos.
How could she love someone so irrationally, and hate him so fiercely? Neculai was despicable, psychotic, cruel... and yet. It was a conflict that tugged at her heartstrings and made her chest feel tight with guilt.
She took a deep breath. Her brother was right. Neculai would not dare touch him, if he had any intention of winning her back. All of this was an elaborate show, and he had put on better performances before.
