Song Review: Robin Trower feat. Sari Schorr - “Burn”

Robin Trower got himself a new singer. And he’s so enamored with Sari Schorr, she gets co-billing on the forthcoming Joyful Sky.

“I've worked with some great vocalists over the years, but working with Sari Schorr and her expressive vocal range has inspired me to write a new album just for her voice,” the guitarist said in a statement.

I’m reaching out to you, Schorr sings on “Burn,” the opening track and lead single from the LP, arriving Oct. 27.

The music indicates Trower was indeed struck. This low-ember blues finds him playing restrained, highly effectual, notes that float over rhythm section and organ as Schorr cautions:

You don’t need to burn/burn the whole place down

No showboating here. “Burn” is about the power of subtlety.

Trower’s new studio album, Joyful Sky, represents vindication for his latest flash of artistic instinct. Always receptive to singers who can elevate his emotive guitar touch, the 78-year-old heard a quality in the smoky power of the acclaimed New Yorker Sari Schorr that made him want to tear down and rebuild his songcraft around her.

“I’ve worked with some great vocalists over the years but Sari is dynamite, just an absolute knockout,” reflects Trower. “This album really pushed me, made me write in different keys and arrange songs for her voice. I went more down the R&B route this time, because I knew she’d be great with that flavour. But the blues still underpins everything I do – and there’s definitely elements from my ’70s stuff in this new album.”

Song Review: Robert Trower feat. Sari Schorr - “I’ll be Moving On”

Robin Trower’s understated guitar is the star of “I’ll be Moving On.”

The second single from Trower’s forthcoming (Oct. 27) Joyful Sky, a joint with singer Sari Schorr is another slow “Burn,” as the lead track is titled; however, this one is unwisely adorned with unnecessary background vocals that detract from Schorr’s raspy delivery as she sings:

I wish you well but/I’ll be moving on

Still a solid blues-rock track. But Trower is typically at his best when he keeps things simple.
