Con Report: In Your Write Mind 2022
Con Report: In Your Write Mind 2022
I love all the conferences and conventions that I attend throughout the year (because why else would I spend the money on them), but my absolute favorite is In Your Write Mind. This writing workshop is hosted by the alumni of my creative writing graduate program, and is basically an excuse for us to go back to campus every summer. Other writers are welcome and encouraged to join us, but for me…

How a First-Timer Wrimo Landed Literary Representation
Tumblr media
NaNo participant Demi Michelle Schwartz shares her story on how NaNoWriMo helped her sign on with a literary agent! She also offers some lessons she learned from taking on the challenge — and maybe it'll inspire you too!
Are you an author with dreams of being represented by a literary agent? If so, I’m here to tell you that NaNoWriMo played a key role in my journey to signing with my agent, Michelle Jackson at LCS Literary.
I received an offer on the manuscript I drafted during my first NaNoWriMo in 2022. Fun fact, I signed my contract during November in 2023, exactly a year after writing the book. Reflecting back, there were choices I made that I hope will give you insight into how your NaNoWriMo project could lead to securing representation.
Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone
I’ve been an avid reader of young adult mysteries and thrillers ever since middle school. For this reason, I naturally gravitated to those genres when I started writing books. Still, I’ve grown to appreciate all genres from my MFA in Writing Popular Fiction program at Seton Hill University, a top one being fantasy. When I decided to participate in NaNoWriMo, I stepped outside my comfort zone and drafted a young adult Little Red Riding Hood reimagining with Greek mythology.
Exploring a different genre led to me writing the book that got me my agent. So, if you’re interested in taking the NaNoWriMo challenge, consider trying something new. Along the way, you’ll expand your creative horizons.
Planning Before Taking the Challenge
Something I noticed after participating in NaNoWriMo twice now is that planning my books led to me feeling invested in them. As authors, we always have ideas bouncing around in our heads. Some stick, and others don’t. Taking time to explore my characters, plot, world, and more made me realize how much I loved what I was creating. Before I even started writing on November 1, I felt passionate about my story.
When you’re pitching agents, your goal is to sell your story. Having such a strong belief in your manuscript will allow you to authentically query it. Passion shines through, and if you care about your book, an agent may fall in love with it, too.
Taking Time to Receive Feedback and Revise
I can’t stress enough how important it is to receive feedback on your work and do several rounds of revisions. Once you draft a book during NaNoWriMo, it may be difficult to resist the temptation to send it out right away. Rather than querying a manuscript that isn’t ready, channel your eagerness to share your work into finding critique partners and beta readers.
For my manuscript, I did a revision on my own after winning NaNoWriMo. Then, I received critiques, made edits, and repeated this process until I felt my manuscript was ready. I queried my agent in August, and she offered me representation at the end of October. I truly believe the time and effort I put into polishing my book led to getting many full requests and my offer.
If I would have pitched the draft from NaNoWriMo, I’m 100 percent sure my email would have been flooded with only rejections. So, remember to take your time revising. The wait will be worth it when you begin receiving positive responses to submissions.
Now that it’s a new year, there’s a long runway before November arrives. It’s never too early to start planning your NaNoWriMo project. Since this challenge gave me the opportunity to draft the book that made one of my dreams come true, I hope you feel inspired to take a strategic approach to your NaNoWriMo project and give it wings to soar in the publishing world.

Excerpt:
“Why does anything pertaining to you have to come with extra baggage?” Uncle Damon said. His dominant pack power surged, affecting the others nearby and making them restless.
The air crackled with his energy. I held my ground. His words stung, but he’d never hear me say it. I’d had lots of practice over the years keeping my hurt from showing, but at this moment, I lashed out with a barb of my own.
“I’m just lucky that way. Kind of like you.” I tapped the desk with my fingertips, knowing he hated it and narrowed my eyes at him.
He sure as hell had his own baggage when it came to relationships and pack bonds, especially when it came to anything with my mother.
“If the two of you are done poking at one another, I’d like to move on to the pertinent issue of the cursed map,” Sebastian said. He stood a good foot away from his desk and peered down at the map as if it might explode.
Everyone had a hands-off approach to the map after I’d blurted out that it was cursed.
“It won’t curse you just by touching it,” I said. “At least, not from what Gwenn or I could tell. It has a hidden layer that will attack you if you try to force it out in the open.”
“That’s just great,” Mutther said. “I suppose you found out firsthand?”
“Not me. Gwenn did. I was the innocent bystander.”
“Right. How innocent?” Nick said. He moved to Mutther’s side and viewed the map from farther away. Neither of them was taking any chances.
Not that I blamed them. They had suffered from being too near me in the past. Mutther was still rebuilding his bar.

Branch Brook Park in Orange, NJ
The nation's first county park, Branch Brook Park, is in the North Ward of Newark, between the Forest Hill and Roseville neighborhoods. I love that this recreation area is situated inside the Municipality of Belleville. The park is famous for having the most cherry blossom trees anywhere in the United States. Multiple points of entry into the park from Downtown Newark are provided by the Newark Light Rail, which runs along the park's west side. The New Jersey National Registers of Historic Places include Branch Brook Park in 198 - 1981; that's why until now, Branch Brook Park is still one of the most visited parks in the country. It stands out because it was the first county park in the United States to open to the public. The park has an average width of 1/4 mile and a length of nearly 4 miles. It is the County's largest developed park, covering 360 acres. It combines open meadowland and small woodland patches on gently rolling terrain.

The Law Of Conscription
By Trifol Headman, Seton Hill University Class of 2025
March 21, 2023
Tumblr media
There are various ways to recruit military forces, as discussed in Sandel. One method is conscription, also known as the draft, in which individuals are required by law to serve in the military for a certain period. This approach to the acquisition of military service and personnel aligns with the idea of utilitarianism by taking measures to preserve the common. Another method is voluntary service or the free market system, in which individuals choose to enlist in the military. This approach to military service and personnel aligns with the idea of libertarianism by taking measures to ensure individual freedom of choice . The next option is conscription allowing paid substitutes which were used during the Civil War which is where it gained the name The Civil War System. This approach to military recruitment involves paying someone else to fight in your stead when there is an active draft. This caused Congress to change its approach to the draft. In this article, all the points are examined and an emphasis on private military contractor groups is taken.

Conscription Vs Non-Conscription
By Trifol Headman, Seton Hill University Class of 2025
March 20, 2023
Tumblr media
As described in Sandel, there are several methods for recruiting military personnel. Conscription, commonly known as the draft, is one manner through which individuals are obliged by law to serve in the military for a set amount of time. This approach to military service and personnel acquisition coincides with the utilitarian principle of taking efforts to safeguard the common good or "advance the general welfare" [2] of society. Another option is to join the military through voluntary service or the free market system. This approach to military duty and people is consistent with libertarianism by ensuring individual freedom of choice. "Enabling people to engage in voluntary trades respects their rights; policies that interfere with open markets disrespect individual liberty."[2] The second alternative is conscription, which allows compensated replacements and was utilized during the Civil War, thus the term The Civil War System. When there is an active draft, this method of military recruiting is paying someone else to fight in your place. This prompted Congress to reconsider their position on the draft. "Congress enacted a new draft law in response to the complaint. Although it did not abolish the ability to hire a substitute, it did provide that any draftee might pay the government a price of $300 rather than serve [2].
Critics of conscription argue that it is slavery and  morally repugnant. The individual has no freedom to choose which makes it anti-democratic. "If you are a libertarian, the answer is obvious. Conscription (Policy 1) is unjust since it is coercive and similar to slavery." [2] Critics of non-conscription argue that it disproportionately markets to those from low socioeconomic backgrounds as a pathway to higher education and money. They also argue that it is more expensive to run. You have to pay for advertising, recruitment personnels and  retention factors. Critics of the civil war system argue that wealthy individuals, who frequently have power, don't face the responsibility of fighting in the wars they start. Instead, prey on those from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
In recent years, there has been an ongoing discussion about the legality and morality of private military contractors' operations. Many all throughout the world consider private military companies like Blackwater useful and necessary in times of war. On the other hand, others view privatized military groups as unethical, money-hungry mercenaries with little to no ideals. When discussing the activities of these contractors, many people who perceive these firms in this light have a moral argument. There was a worldwide outrage over Blackwater workers' lack of professionalism, control, and regulation, which resulted in horrible treatment and, in some cases, death for Iraqis. The video shows Blackwater employees traveling through Iraqi streets in armored trucks equipped with firearms. The personnel then opened fire on Iraqi citizens, including women and children, without any provocation. The events described in the documentary and in this film also prompted serious concerns about the employment of private military contractors, as well as the need for better control and responsibility. [1]
Some of the benefits of utilizing private military groups are;
A properly trained and equipped military force is typically superior to one that has been conscripted. To some extent, this argument aligns with the utilitarian opinion since it advocates for a competent armed force that promotes the general well and safety of individuals and society. It is also consistent with the libertarian perspective since it supports the will to enlist. Volunteers are also more likely to be motivated and devoted to their duties since they have a financial incentive to do their duties with honesty and with the objective of winning. This argument coordinates with the libertarian belief since individuals who accepted the contract did so voluntarily. When a larger military presence is neither necessary or preferred, the employment of private military contractors allows for greater flexibility in responding to emergencies and circumstances. This argument is parallel with the utilitarian perspective since it advocates for a capable military force that promotes the general welfare and safety of citizens and society. Warfare is often quite expensive, and private military is a wonderful method to save money because it is typically less expensive than keeping a huge permanent force. This argument also correlates with the utilitarian position, because by spending less on the military and military services, you have more money to reallocate to other sectors of society that would benefit society. Private military contractors frequently provide unique expertise and experience that the military lacks since they are not constrained by the same agreements and rules that government military troops must follow. This argument also accords with the utilitarian viewpoint since improved training for the military personnel will benefit the welfare of the country.
In response the cons shared by those who are against  private military groups are;
The morally opposing answer is that because private military contractors are not subject to the same rules and regulations as military troops, it might be difficult to hold them accountable for their actions. This argument follows the libertarian perspective because if people joined voluntarily they would know the policies and standards to uphold. Issues about the use of private military contractors: Private military contractors pose ethical concerns regarding the use of force for business as well as the likelihood of human rights breaches. This argument is consistent with the libertarian viewpoint since if people joined willingly, they would be aware of the regulations and standards to uphold. Private military contractors have less oversight than military troops, perhaps leading to abuse and misconduct. This argument would align with the libertarian viewpoint because if people joined voluntarily they would know the policies and standards to uphold. Private military contractors may lead to poor morale among military personnel who perceive their tasks are being delegated to private firms. This argument aligns with the libertarian perspective because if people joined voluntarily they would know the policies and standards to uphold. Private military contractors may be less dedicated to a mission or the country than military personnel. This argument aligns with the libertarian ideology because if people joined voluntarily they would have more at stake morally and the values they have would push them to win.
People should have personal choices and individual autonomy in decision-making regarding military recruitment. People should also make their own decisions and that government intervention should be kept to a minimum. Whether directly or indirectly, typically will act in society’s benefit, this is referred to as the market's "invisible hand,". It is innate to safeguard livelihoods and well-being which causes people to defend themselves and society typically without  government intervention. People are also more likely to be motivated to attain their goals when they have the choice to pick their own route. In contrast, being forced to do something typically results in anger and a lack of passion. Giving people the opportunity to select their own path and pursue their own objectives allows society to benefit from individuals' inherent motivations and activities.

In Your Write Mind 2022 Schedule
In Your Write Mind 2022 Schedule
One of the main reasons that the last 2 years have been pretty brutal on my mental health is that I haven’t been able to visit one of the places that truly refreshes me as both a writer and a person. In Your Write Mind is an annual writing workshop hosted by alumni of the graduate program I attended. Returning to Seton Hill University, one of my favorite places on Earth, and spending time with…

5 Tips for NaNoWriMo First-Timers
Tumblr media
Feeling nervous as a new Wrimo? NaNo Guest Demi Michelle Schwartz has advice for you! Read on for tips on how to make sure your first attempt at Camp NaNoWriMo is a great one.
Have you heard about the NaNoWriMo or Camp NaNoWriMo buzz? Are you on the fence about taking the challenge for the first time? If yes, I’ve been in your shoes.
Last year, I got a new novel idea I was eager to write. I love challenges, and NaNoWriMo looked like the perfect time to draft my story. Still, being a first-timer gave me nervous butterflies. Little did I know I’d win my first NaNoWriMo with a finished draft at 73,000 words.
Whether you’re planning on participating in Camp or thinking ahead to November, I have five tips for you.
1. Plot and Research in Advance
First, I can confidently say I wouldn’t have been successful if I didn’t plot and research. Having a solid story idea from the start gave my writing direction each day.
If you’re a pantser, this may contrast with your process. Rather than completely plotting the novel, see if you can at least plan major beats or turning point scenes. That way, you’ll have plot points to write towards.
Also, doing research in advance reduces the amount of times you’ll have to pause to look something up. You may have to google information here and there, but a head start will make these internet-surfing adventures minimal.
2. Plan a Writing Schedule
Planning a writing schedule is key. For me, I’m most productive when I first wake up before I’m swamped by the day’s tasks. Also, I write well before bed, as long as I’m not too tired. Knowing when you write best will allow you to plug in time to work on your story.
Also, look at your calendar and plan accordingly. Part of my NaNoWriMo goal was writing every day, but I had to work around other commitments. Last November was a busy month for me in my songwriting career. So, I had to adjust my writing schedule during busy release and press days.
Having a plan for when you’d like to write and being aware of days you can fit in more time with your story will give your journey structure.
3. Remain Flexible
I can’t stress enough how important it is to remain flexible. No amount of planning can prepare you for curve balls or days you’re not in a creative mood.
If you go into NaNoWriMo thinking all your plans are set in stone, you may find yourself feeling anxious when something veers off course. Remaining flexible gives you room to adapt while staying on track.
4. Interact with the Community
NaNoWriMo has a special community. Whether you’re connecting with other writers on the website or on social media, everyone is so supportive.
There’s nothing better than participating in an event where writers are cheering each other on and sharing experiences. You may make friends and connect with critique partners and beta readers. Most of all, you’ll realize you’re not alone as you take the NaNoWriMo challenge.
5. Celebrate All Your Wins
Finally, celebrate all your wins. Recognize when you draft your first chapter. Give yourself a pat on the back when you hit a certain word count. If you’re doing a streak, feel proud for writing several days in a row.
Sometimes, as writers, we only focus on our end goal. It’s important to remember the small wins along the way play a role in reaching the desired result.
There you have it. Those tips allowed me to succeed during my first NaNoWriMo. There’s an international community of writers ready to welcome you, so get out there and become a Wrimo!

This edition of the Spooky Six features none other than Tim Waggoner . . . and a fragant pot of unsweetened herb tea! Author and editor Thomas F. Monteleone has called Tim Waggoner “One of the best horror writers of his generation.” Waggoner's first novel came out in 2001, and since then he's published over fifty novels and seven collections of short stories. He writes original dark fantasy and horror, as well as media tie-ins. He's written tie-in fiction based on Supernatural, Grimm, The X-Files, Alien, Doctor Who, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Transformers, among others, and he's written novelizations for films such as Halloween Kills, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. His articles on writing have appeared in Writer's Digest, The Writer, and The Writer’s Chronicle. He’s the author of the acclaimed horror-writing guide Writing in the Dark, which won the Bram Stoker Award in 2021, as well as its follow-up Writing in the Dark: The Workbook. He won another Bram Stoker Award in 2021 in the category of short nonfiction for his article “Speaking of Horror,” and in 2017 he received the Bram Stoker Award in Long Fiction for his novella The Winter Box. In 2016, the Horror Writer’s Association honored him with the Mentor of the Year award. In addition, he's been a multiple finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award and the Scribe Award, and a one-time finalist for the Splatterpunk Award. His fiction has received numerous Honorable Mentions in volumes of Best Horror of the Year, and he’s had several stories selected for inclusion in volumes of Year’s Best Hardcore Horror. His work has been translated into Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Hungarian, and Turkish. He holds BS Ed. and MA degrees from Wright State University and has taught college English classes since 1987. For nine years, he served as a faculty mentor in Seton Hill University’s MFA in Writing Popular Fiction program. Along with writing fiction and teaching, he’s worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, copy editor, and developmental editor. Tim Waggoner: My novel The Way of All Flesh, which came out in 2014, is my take on the zombie apocalypse trope. A large part of the novel takes place inside the mind of the lead character, who is a zombie. How he—and other zombies—see the world is very different from how humans perceive it. Willow Croft: “It was a dark and stormy night . . .” What are your go-to comfort foods, drinks, or other ways to wind down after a long day (or night) of writing? Tim Waggoner: I’m diabetic, so my comfort food options are limited—usually Diet Coke, an Adkins bar, or sugar-free candy.
I may scroll through social media or watch a horror movie. My wife’s not a horror fan, so if she’s hanging out with me, we’ll watch movies that aren’t too scary, along with true-crime documentaries, and UFO/cryptid/ghost documentaries. Ancient Aliens is a favorite of ours because it’s hysterical. Willow Croft: “Did you hear that noise?” Everyone, even us horror writers, have our night terrors. What is it that frightens you the most? Tim Waggoner: I can see the potential danger in just about anything, which is probably why I write horror! Late at night, I sometimes hear a noise and worry that someone might be trying to break into the house. So far, it’s always been a false alarm. I also have nightmares about people breaking in. Otherwise, my fears are normal ones—something bad happening to the people I love, letting down friends and family, etc. Willow Croft: “I’m sure it was nothing. But I’ll just go outside and check, anyway. Alone. With no weapons.” Have you ever gotten writer's block? If so, how do you combat it? Do you have certain rituals or practices that help get you into the writing (or creating) mindset? Tim Waggoner: I don’t think of it as writer’s block, but I do go through occasional lulls where my brain feels sluggish and refuses to cooperate with me. I have difficulty writing fiction during those times, so I switch to nonfiction for a bit, and that works. I’ll also tend to other writing-career-related activities—catching up on correspondence, updating my website, preparing the next edition of my newsletter, writing a new blog entry, creating a new YouTube video, or answering interview questions! Sometimes I’ll vary the time of day I write or the location, and that often gets things going again. I may experiment with a short story idea which isn’t already promised to an editor, so it doesn’t matter if I finish it or not. If I can’t produce any kind of writing, I keep up on writing and publishing news on social media, think of new projects I might try, read and watch movies for inspiration. As long as I keep doing, eventually the fiction-writing engine kicks into gear again. Willow Croft:  “Don’t go into the basement!” Are you an impulsive pantser or a plotter with outlines galore? What other writing/industry advice would you share with your fellow writers & creators? Tim Waggoner: I’m a combination of both a planner and a pantser. Since most of my novels are sold to publishers on an outline first, I have to develop a solid outline to get a contract. After that, I may never look at the outline again as I write the book, and I don’t worry if it veers from the outline, as long as the basic story remains the same as what the editor is expecting to receive. I’ve written a lot of media tie-ins novels, and those require a detailed outline that both the editor at the publishing house and the IP holder have to sign off on, and you need to stick to that outline. Even with an outline, individual scenes aren’t planned out, and sometimes I’ll make rough outlines of scenes, really just rough notes for myself. When it comes to short stories, I’m more of a pantser. The short length allows for more experimentation, and if something I try doesn’t work, there’s usually time to try a different idea. I may start a story with an image or basic concept and go from there. Sometimes I’ll write notes about what to include next in the story as I go. Other times I just write and see where the story takes me. As for advice to pass on, that’s the focus of my nonfiction books, my blog, my YouTube channel, and the articles in my newsletter. I’ve got so much advice to share that it’s hard to pick just one or two things. But if I have to . . . For fiction writers, I’d say write with an immersive point of view and make your fiction more vivid. Regardless of how much we read, most of us experience stories as visual media in movies, on TV series, in video games, etc. far more than we do as printed words. Because of this, beginning writers write stories as if they’re scripts, all dialogue and stage directions.
They write from the point of view of a passive observer who’s watching events play out before them, as if on a screen. Fiction writers need to learn to imagine as if they are the main character in a story or scene, and to write from that character’s viewpoint. That kind of immersive storytelling—where the reader in a sense becomes the viewpoint character—is fiction’s great strength, and right now, no other media or forms of technology can replicate this experience. Willow Croft: “Ring ring!” It’s the middle of the night and the phone mysteriously rings. Which notable writer, or person from history, would be on the other end of the line? Tim Waggoner: Stephen King. I first realized I could become a writer when I read an interview with King in an old horror comic. This was right after The Shining came out. I read a lot as a kid and as a teen, but for some reason, it never occurred to me that I could be a writer. After I read the interview, something clicked, and I realized that writing was something than someone could choose to do. Something I could choose. I’d love to talk to King and thank him, because if I hadn’t read that article, who knows if I’d ever have become a writer? Neighbors and Perpetrators
One of the themes that emerged more or less spontaneously from the Seton Hill University / NEH institute Grappling with Genocide was the idea of neighbors, how members of a community respond to dangerous circumstances. Our university is near Pittsburgh where associations to Mr. Rogers and neighborliness abound. Pittsburgh, which covers a smaller area than most major metropolitan centers in the…
