October 29, 1923: The first radio broadcast in Germany goes on air
Radio had a rough start in Germany. At the end of World War I, where the German army was among the pioneers in radio communication, during the November Revolution, revolutionary workers occupied the headquarters of the German press and news service, falsely claiming the victory of the communist and socialist revolutionary forces. This made the social democratic government to impose harsh restrictions on radio broadcast, which severely hampered the development of the new medium in Germany:
Only the state had the sovereign right of to set up and operate transmitting and receiving systems
Private individuals were prohibited to receive any radio broadcast
Receivers were limited in their technical characteristics, supported by a requirement for state approval for any new model
This led to the state-controlled postal service becoming a monopolist serving a small number of (mostly public) institutions. Nonetheless, the first entertainment broadcast was distributed at Christmas 1920, when postal employees brought instruments to the broadcast center in Königs Wusterhausen (south of Berlin), played music and recited poems.
After heavy lobbying by radio pioneers such as Hans Bredow, complaints and public discontent and increasing numbers of illegal self-made private receivers, which frequently caused interferences, the harsh restrictions were finally lifted in 1923. Each owner of a state-approved receiver had to register as a "radio participant" and pay a license fee. In autumn of 1923, at the height of the inflation, a license cost 780 billion Mark per year, a sum that only very few were able and willing to afford. Thst's why the first broadcast by Funk-Stunde Berlin from a studio in the Vox House on October 29, 1923 has no (paying) listeners. The first registered participant was Berlin tobacco retailer Wilhelm Kollhoff, who received his license and his radio on October 31.
Rapidly, a number of radio stations opened throughout Germany, which were consolidated under the umbrella organization "Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft".
Infamously, radio became the main propaganda instrument of the Nazis, who quickly forced all radio stations into line, sending the liberal radio pioneers to the first concentration camps. The development and widespread distribution of a cheap radio receiver, the "Volksempfänger" ("people's receiver"), made radio a medium for the masses. Nonetheless, only 46.9 % of the German households had a radio in 1937, compared with the USA or the UK, which had already a density of 78.3 % and 66.1 %, respectively.
After World War II, radio developed differently in East and West Germany. Radio in East Germany remained state-controlled, sending communist propaganda now. In the West, organizations under public law were founded in the federal states, funded by fees of radio users and controlled by bodies in which the relevant societal groups are equally represented. In the 1980s, private radio stations were allowed.
Because Germany received only very few AM frequencies as part of the sactions after World War II, development of FM radio was accelerated, leading to new standards in the quality of transmission and HiFi stereo radio. Radio established itself as a promoter of culture in the area of literature and music. The stations set up symphonic and dance orchestras, big bands, choirs, and elaborate audioplay studios. They were also pioneering promoters of electronic music. In the recent years, however, the importance of radio as promoters of high culture has diminished more and more. With the exceptions of a few stations, radio is regarded as background entertainment for people who cannot stand silence.
In the future, it is expected that the split between music and entertainment, high culture, and information will will deepen. Radio as a promotor of culture will probably not play a role any more. Taking over podcast productions may revive the role of radio as an opinion-forming medium. Radio is still unrivalled as the fastest medium, being able to provide the latest news virtually in real-time.

Yannima Tommy Watson (ca. 1935-2017) was born at Anamarapiti, approximately 40 kilometres west of the small community of Irrunytju (also known as Wingellina) Irrunytju is situated in Western Australia near the tri-state border of Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Watson is a Pitjantjatjara man, and his skin group is Karimara. He spent his early childhood and teenage years living with his family, travelling from water hole to water hole, hunting and gathering and learning from his father the practical skills on how to survive on their lands in the arid regions of the Gibson Desert. While growing up he learned to understand the significance of social organization and the spiritual and tribal law teachings of his ancestors. Watson also inherited the knowledge on how to find water and food within their region. However, the fate of Watson and his family and many of the other western desert nomads was sealed with the introduction of assimilation policies. This combined with the severe drought throughout the 1950’s resulted in many of the Pitjantjatjara, Ngaanyatjarra and Pintupi Aborigines moving from their home lands to the administrative centres in Warburton, Ernabella and Papunya. The unfamiliar world of the Government settlements was no place for these free nomadic people who were use to a life of unlimited travel, they became disoriented and more than half of the population of these new communities died. Most never adjusted and eventually in the 1970’s and early 1980’s returned to their traditional homelands.
In 2001 Watson was one of the founding artists of the Irrunytju art centre. His work is rich in the knowledge of the topographical landforms of his country and the Tjukurrpa law that underlies it. He paints the stories of his mothers and grandfather’s country recording the sacred dreamtime stories intuitively using large vibrant colourful dots of pinks, burgundy, orange and reds to symbolically represent the dreamtime journeys of the ancient spirits and the significant episodes in the history of his tribe.
“My grandfather’s country, grandmother’s country. When they were alive, they would take me around the country, when I was a kid. That’s why we look after country, go out whenever we can. See if the rock holes are good”
His most important dreamtime stories are the Great Flood Dreaming, a story of the melting ice that flooded the lands north of the Great Australian Bight. Another story tells of the Pangkalangku, tall man eaters from the north east and his other stories tell of the tribal conflicts between the Pitjantjatjarra and the Yankunyatjarra.
As a young man Watson became a stockman at Mount Ebenezer, and then travelled to Yuendumu where he gained a reputation as an exceptional horseman. He is now a tribal elder and law man and frequently travels widely across the Pitjantjatjara lands to fulfil his traditional obligations. Today he divides his time between the remote community of Warakurna on the edge of the Great Victorian Desert and Alice Springs where he has a house and painting studio. He is widely recognised nationally and internationally and his work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Western Australian Art Gallery, Perth, South Australian Art Gallery, Adelaide and in many important private collections .He was commissioned in 2005 to produce artwork to be permanently installed in the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris, France, which opened in 2006. The painting Wipu rockhole (2006) was enlarged and reproduced on stainless steel tiles which adorn a ceiling within the museum.

Project Create - Anacostia, South East, Washington DC
As Historic Anacostia downtown main street business community, and the surrounding residential neighborhood experience growth and changes, the lives of young children and youth are impacted by the work of the Project Create, which has its roots in the early 1990s to provide a safe haven and after school creative art programs for children in the community.
Project Create, now in 2024, has its permanent place to call home in downtown Anacostia, where it provides free art and digital media classes to at-risk children and youth living in the Anacostia neighborhood and beyond. Project Create studio classes offers children and youth a gateway to engage in studio classes in learning to experiment in art expression of mixed-media collage, jewelry making, graphic design, dance, theater improv, and drawing & painting year round.
Back in the 1990’s, living in Anacostia was an extremely challenging time. Neighborhood children and youth needing a safe haven and after school programs to go to, but had no where to go. Filling that void of no place to go, is where Rev. John W. Wimberly, active in the community, and pastoring the Western Presbyterian Church in Washington DC, stepped in. Rev. Wimberly launched his after school program, which evolved into Project Create decade later.
Gaging the creative needs of Anacostia at risk children and youth, many with no outlet for after school programming, he started an after school program to meet the community needs. With a small beginning, that planted the seed of the creation of Project Create as a neighborhood after school program with a focus on the arts and culture in Anacostia, and connecting it to the museum resources in the city. That includes the Smithsonian, plus more.
In 2002, Project Create expanded to serve more children and youth in their after school program with collaborative efforts with So Others Might Eat (SOME), which is a non-profit focused on touching and transforming the lives of children and families who are underserved or homeless. With time, Project Create expanded collaborative efforts with Community of Hope, connecting children, youth, and their families to the city health care services.
By 2003, Project Create officially became a non-profit, and achieved a milestone to buy a building on the main street business corridor 208 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE. That is a monumental achievement given its humble beginnings back in the 1990s.
Today, Project Create is a art and cultural pillar in Anacostia downtown main street revitalization, with a focus on engaging children, youth, and their families to participate in the arts and emerging cultural community in Anacostia, and the opportunities within the city and beyond as participants of the program head for colleges and universities throughout the country. All classes are free, and it is open to children and youth of all ages.
Project Create has also expanded its program to offer digital media classes. It has a studio that is fully equipped with sound and recording equipment, DJ and podcast equipment, video and photo technology, new computers with graphic design capabilities, and 3-D printers. That gives way to so much creative space for underserved and homeless children, youth and their families to find creative spaces to thrive in the Washington DC area.

Val-Cula Daily - May 29

Deep Dive: Stoker and Orientalism. This is gonna be a long one...
--------------------
The "Szgany" peoples are heavily featured in today's story, starting on an iconic, but often problematic association between the Romani ethnic group, the supernatural world, and Western European prejudices. The word Szgany appears to be Stoker's attempt to trasliterate a Romanian word, rather than one that existed in widespread use. There's a more in-depth deep-dive into this than I can provide here: https://screamscenepodcast.tumblr.com/post/699604864253214720/a-point-of-clarification-more-linguistics-cw
Its often said that the past is a foreign country and the context of Stoker's time, while it does not excuse the problems, might help inform them.
---------------
Let's open this can of worms...
---------------
Stoker lived and wrote in the 19th century, the height of an art-historical trend called Orientalism, a renewed Western interest in the Middle East and Islamic culture, brought about by changes to travel and communications technology. African colonization, increased trade and travel with North Africa, South Asia and the Ottoman empire, opened up Western European cultures to an entirely new set of cultures and aesthetics, and interest exploded.
From a cynical view, Orientalism is a problematic movement, a patronizing Colonial and Imperialist coinciding with racist depictions, exploitation and the forced homogenization of cultures resulting from the spread of European Colonialism in Africa and Southeast Asia. But it is also one of fascination and awe at new concepts of expression and thought, a genuine attempt to understand and adapt these expressions and cultures, but through a very removed and warped view brought on by Europe's own ethno-religious struggles, state/religious propaganda of earlier times, geographic distance and linguistic ignorance.
Orientalism was especially prevalent in France, where the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français (Society of French Orientalist Painters) was founded a mere 4 years prior to Dracula's publication, inspired by French Colonial ties to Algeria and Morocco. French Orientalist painters could be split into two groups: Those who traveled, lived and worked in the areas they painted, and those who never left their own studios. The SPOF often held promotions and dinners, not just of French Orientalist painters, but also showcases of Islamic art, cuisine, language and culture. Similar trends existed in England, although to a lesser extent, and it is evident from Stoker's work that he was often exposed to these movements. The first unabridged and unexpurgated English Language editions of the seminal Orientalist collection, Tales of 1,001 Nights were published in 1882 and 1885, after earlier, heavily censored and altered versions had been in circulation up to that point.
While it is easy to dismiss the movement as another example of Western colonialism, it was also one driven by a genuine desire to understand and share the cultural beauty they encountered, albeit through the often blunt and blundering lens of Belle Epoque/Victorian society. Stoker is making a real attempt to showcase the peoples of Eastern Europe, commonly drawing on food, clothing and architecture in his drawings, but sometimes, as is the case with the Szgany, he falls flat to the standards of contemporary review.
------------
So, now that I've gotten everyone worked up over a 19th century artistic movement, how does the initial appearance of Dracula's "Gipsie" henchmen work out? I actually thought pretty well.
The Szgany have arrived to do some work for Drac, at which point I direct you to my earlier "Dracula is a crime lord of a technothriller. The Szgany are not following Dracula alone as a superstitious group, but one of a large network, including, but not limited to: A Romanian stagecoach line, a hotel, several British lawyers, several British realtors, a Russian shipping company, a British Zoo, a Bulgarian businessman, a pair of Hungarian Bankers, several British teamsters and a spider-eating man in a padded room. Its sort of weird how the Szgany get singled out, when its actually harder to find a group the ISN'T working for Dracula, however inadvertently. Drac's got connections, is my point.
Anyway, Jonathan writes some postcards to Mina and Hawkins, and drops them out a barred window with some gold. The Szgany turn them over to Dracula! A nefarious betrayal! Or is it?
Neither Jonathan, nor the Szgany share any language, as Jonathan points out when he drops some stuff without context or instruction on top of a caravaner's head. Seeing the crazy man throw things out a window shouting in a strange language, they turn them over to the homeowner, Dracula, for further instruction... which is probably what would have happened with a Romani trapped in an English Lord's remote castle as well, TBH. It doesn't go well.
The Count has come. He sat down beside me, and said in his smoothest voice as he opened two letters:—
"The Szgany has given me these, of which, though I know not whence they come, I shall, of course, take care. See!"—he must have looked at it—"one is from you, and to my friend Peter Hawkins; the other"—here he caught sight of the strange symbols as he opened the envelope, and the dark look came into his face, and his eyes blazed wickedly—"the other is a vile thing, an outrage upon friendship and hospitality! It is not signed. Well! so it cannot matter to us." And he calmly held letter and envelope in the flame of the lamp till they were consumed. Then he went on:—
"The letter to Hawkins—that I shall, of course, send on, since it is yours. Your letters are sacred to me. Your pardon, my friend, that unknowingly I did break the seal. Will you not cover it again?" He held out the letter to me, and with a courteous bow handed me a clean envelope. I could only redirect it and hand it to him in silence. When he went out of the room I could hear the key turn softly. A minute later I went over and tried it, and the door was locked.
Dracula is at his creepiest when he does something threatening but poses it as a "friendly" conversation.

Angsty Shivers dialogue for a fanfiction i might post at some point
CW for brief self-deprication, mentions of isolation and dissociation
SHIVERS – Somewhere in the north, the rain is slowly clearing up. A man and a woman sit on opposite ends of their living room couch, living their lifes. They were considered a couple once, but right now they are strangers in their own home.
She has a boyfriend outside of their engagement, so does he. Familiarity keeps them in their single bedroom amartment, and this will not change.
> Listen.
Blink.
SHIVERS – In the east, a person in their mid 40s is driving home from a hard day at work. Months ago they might have expected their little brother there, his shift should have ended an hour earlier than theirs.
They know he won't be there. Work called. As it always did. Their knuckles where white against the leathery steering wheel. They gave up on helping him snap out of it a long time ago.
> Why are you showing me this?
Blink.
SHIVERS – Near the edge of Jamrock, in the south, a woman is busying herself with sweeping the floor. She's been waiting for her partner to return from the kitchen, he has been in there for an hour now. The woman goes to see if everything is alright, her heart racing. What if he's hurt?
And there he stands, still scrubbing the plate he was scrubbing 20 minutes ago, the plate's paint slowly rubbing off bit by bit. He is somewhere else right now and she knows she can't get him back from it. So she doesn't. A thunder roars outside.
> What is happening?
Blink.
SHIVERS – Near the harbor, somewhere in the west, a man stands in his small studio apartment, hunched over the kitchen counter. He's been standing there for a while now, a small slip of paper in his hand. A phone number. The man asked for it a few weeks ago. "To review the case one last time" He said.
The truth is, the other promised to call. Months ago. They havent talked since that day. The man doesn't know if they ever will again. He puts the slip down, swearing to stop thinking about this but he knows. He knows he won't for the forseeable future. He opens the kitchen window, and looks at the streets below, lit cigarette in hand. His eyes are burning.
You know what? Actually I don't want to know why i'm seeing this. Show me more, show me how people feel much worse for better reasons than I am. I don't care.
> Blink.

Jeff Buckley comes alive at Cinequest
Publication Date: Friday, March 04, 2005
Jeff Buckley comes alive at CinequestLate singer-songwriter inspired two first-time filmmakers
by Susan Tavernetti
A strikingly handsome Jeff Buckley speaks to the camera, "My main musical influence? Hmmmm."
A long, long pause follows -- giving you time to admire his chiseled face, thoughtful reflection and the filmmakers' courage to cherish the moment rather than cave in to frenzied, MTV-style cutting.
"Love, anger, depression, joy and dreams," he continues. "And Zeppelin. Totally."
His voice eases into a haunting cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," completely seducing you. This gifted singer-songwriter died too young. The 30-year-old musician with the four-octave voice took a nighttime dip and tragically drowned in Memphis on May 29, 1997. It was the day his music stopped and his legend began to soar.
"Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley" pays tribute to this singular artist whose life and work profoundly touched so many people. Menlo Park filmmaker Nyla Adams and Laurie Trombley, her New York-based collaborator, have lovingly crafted a 61-minute documentary that will make its West Coast debut at Cinequest 15 on March 9. The film festival opened March 2 and runs through March 13 in downtown San Jose.
"We made a film about art inspired by Jeff, and the film itself is art inspired by Jeff," Adams said. "We wanted to light people on fire the way he lit us on fire."
Ironically, Adams' first impression of Buckley wasn't so glowing. While living in a Trinity College dorm room in Hartford, Conn., someone handed her a CD of "Grace," Buckley's only full-length, studio-recorded album. The Cold Jam fan listened to the first song and gave back the 1994 Columbia Records release, insisting it was awful. Five years later, she had a different reaction to the same album.
"It just struck me. I cried listening to it, and it inspired me to write poems. And I don't write poetry," she laughed. "I thought if this is happening to me, then it must be happening to others, because I've never been affected that way."
Adams met Trombley in the copy room of A&E Television Networks in Manhattan, where they talked about making a 10-minute short dealing with Buckley's legacy of inspiration. Unlike her partner-to-be, Trombley had immediately connected to Buckley's vocal stylings and Telecaster guitar licks while working as music editor of the College of New Rochelle's newspaper.
"I listened to "Live at Sin-e" over and over again in one day. The songs were so emotional, so raw and so beautiful and haunting that I didn't know what to make of them. They made my head spin around. The album moved me so much that I wrote him a letter stating that I would work for him for free," Trombley said.
To her surprise, Buckley himself called and from 1994 to 1995 Trombley interned at the management firm representing him. She became his fan-relations manager.
"That speaks volumes of who he was as a person. Jeff took chances and was open-hearted."
Because Buckley had handpicked Trombley, his mother agreed to meet with the earnest pair who hoped to moonlight as first-time filmmakers. Although they later learned that Mary Guibert had intended to refuse their request, the women hit it off. Guibert liked their proposal to focus on her son's impact -- not biography -- and to expose American audiences to the remarkable Southern California artist who had emerged in New York's East Village avant-garde scene in the 1990s.
"Jeff was so gifted that he was able to integrate many different styles into his songs. He could sing anything from gospel to hard, head-banging rock 'n' roll," Adams said. "Although he's huge in England and Australia, enormous in France and Japan, and revered in South America, no one in this country knows who he is. Jeff could rock out with the best of them, but he was so emotional and so raw that he didn't fit into the Seattle grunge trend of the time. America just didn't get it."
Guibert gave them her blessing -- and access to letters, journals, photographs and other elements of Buckley's estate.
As luck would have it, Adams' cube mate at A&E overhead her talking about the project and suggested she call her husband, who worked at Sony and was vice president of Buckley's television promotion. Sony had brought Buckley in as a heritage artist, hoping he would be the next Miles Davis, Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. Boxes of Buckley videotapes that no one had seen were sitting in Sony's basement. Adams and Trombley had no funding for their film, but Sony granted them the festival rights to this treasure trove of performance and interview footage.
Six years later, after 40 hours of interviews conducted by Trombley and shot by Adams, and countless editing sessions, "Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley" was completed in 2004. The accomplished documentary celebrates Buckley in song and spirit, revealing his commitment to his art, his unease with the trappings of the music business and the mystique surrounding his short but significant life.
"The reaction we've been getting from the fans has been phenomenal. That's been the best part, because we made the film for them," Adams said.
Poster girls for a festival that honors mavericks and the digital technology that enables creativity, Adams and Trombley will join other local filmmakers at Cinequest. Woodside resident Kari Nevil ("Your Guardian") will see her film, "Planting Melvin," projected on the big screen. Davina Pardo, Christina Herring and Lila Place -- graduate students in Stanford's Documentary Film and Video program -- will have shorts shown, as well as the animation team of David Pace and Victor Bellomo.
Stanford alumna Christine Nubile's "Police Blotter" reveals differences between the East Palo Alto and Atherton police entries, and Scott Smith shot part of "Charlie the Ox" in Palo Alto.
Sir Ben Kingsley ("Gandhi," "Schindler's List," "Sexy Beast"), Jon Polito ("Miller's Crossing," "The Big Lebowski," "Charlie the Ox"), Blanchard Ryan ("Super Troopers," "Open Water") and Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah (the subject of "Emmanuel's Gift") will receive Cinequest Maverick Spirit Awards.

Tommy Innit's Secret Clinic Chapter 10: On Patrol
Summary: On one of their patrols, Nuke and Ender ran into one of L'Manburg's infamous Vigilantes.
Chapter inspired by Tommy's Ultra-Important Keychain by SeriouslyCalmmitous
TW: Not much in the Trigger Warning area for this chapter. Mention of Anxiety, and some Violence (not major but there is some in this), and Mild Threat.
A/N: HAPPY NEW YEAR! I'm slowly but surely writing some chapters so I can update weekly again. Not gonna lie, it's getting difficult where I want to go from here. I have ideas but I have no idea on where to put them.
So, if the story seems "Outta Place" in certain areas. I will try to piece them back together. Enjoy!
(East Side)
To say that Tubbo and Ranboo were nervous would be an understatement.  Tubbo felt like there were some kind of beehive in his stomach, the way it kept churning.  Ranboo’s anxiety kept flaring up, hands shaking, several what ifs kept going through his head.  Tubbo’s own anxiety wasn’t much better.
It’s been over a month since both Tubbo and Ranboo had seen Orcus and Siren come out of their apartment.  And when Nuke and Ender had asked Arachnid for help.  Tubbo secretly hoped that it was literally a misunderstanding on the Syndicate’s part.  That they just got the address confused, of their actual healer and wound up stumbling upon Tommy and Siren just used his powers to make Tommy forget the whole thing.  But until they hear back from Arachnid, that’s all Tubbo could do, was hope!
Which was why both him and Ranboo were standing on top of one of the apartment buildings on East Side.  Both of them needed a huge distraction to try and take their minds off of things until they hear back from Arachnid.  Tubbo had his radio out so they could hear what’s going on from the Cops Radios.
“Armed Robbery at 419 Main Street East Side, Monarch’s Clothing.  Suspects are armed and need to proceed with caution.”  Came over the radio.
Tubbo turned to Ranboo, it was time for Nuke and Ender.
(Monarch’s Clothing)
Earlier that day, Eret was smiling a mile wide as he read the News Report.  Two new Vigilantes were in town, Nuke and Ender and so far they made quite a debut!  Literally helping out one of L’Manburg’s top twenty Heroes, Arachnid.  Well they couldn’t have helped out a better Hero than them!  Arachnid was pretty neutral when it came to Vigilantes.  Now, if a Vigilante vandalized a certain property like say, Mixer, under a protest.  Then Arachnid would arrest the Vigilante or at least attempt to (after they were done laughing his butt off).  But if a Vigilante was actually protecting part of the City, then Arachnid would either let them be or actually offer to help.
Eret had to admit, they were actually kinda impressed with the new Vigilantes debut.  Not a lot of Vigilantes would take the risk of helping a Hero and being so exposed to the press.  Nuke and Ender on the other had no problem in doing just that.  With a little more practice and a few more years of experience Eret’s pretty sure that Nuke and Ender could be a good team for East Side.
“Excuse me, sir,” a man in a black pristine suit said, drawing Eret’s attention away from the computer.  “Do you know where I might be able to find the owner of this store?  I like to talk to her.”
Eret gave a condescending smile to the man.  It’s not uncommon for people to assume that the owner of a Fashion Store is a woman.  “I’m the owner of this store, and my name is Eret.  I also go by they/them.”  Eret offered their hand to shake the other guy’s hand.
“Oh of course, of course.  My apologies.  My name is Gene Torey and I have a proposition for you and your store!”  Gene says taking out his business card and handing it over to Eret.
Eret looked at the business card with a grim expression.  Ah, yes, he knew exactly who Gene Torey was.  He was the owner of Torey’s Fashion Studios, with several stores in West End and the Hero District.  There was even talk of him opening up a couple of new stores in the South Bay District.  Eret was anything but impressed.
Torey’s Fashion Studio was the utmost scum of the Earth in the Fashion Industry that Eret has ever met!  Torey’s would purposely hire new fashion designers straight out of college on internships, get them to sign prenups that their lawyers had drawn and never go over the specifics with the new interns.  And literally steal the interns designs!
Eret had the pleasure when one designer sought them out as Baron and explained the whole situation.  Torey’s Fashion Studio was holding a brand new intern's designs hostage.  It was either signed over the rights to all of their designs to Torey’s Fashion Studio or Torey’s Legal Team was about to Black List the new intern.  Meaning that the intern wouldn’t have been able to get a job anywhere in the Fashion Industry.
Oh yes, Eret was very familiar with them.  They’re surprised that Torey’s was still around after that scandal had made the news.
“Oh yes, I’m very familiar with Torey’s Fashion Studio.  You guys have stores in nearly all the districts.  What does this have to do with my shop?”  Eret demanded, throwing the pleasantries out the window.
“Well, we like to make your shop one of our own!  I think this place has great potential to be even more outstanding, don’t you think?”
“The answer is no!  Torey’s Fashion Studio is nothing more than a freakin’ scam in the Fashion Industry!  I’m surprised you guys are still around after the Baron exposed you for the frauds that you are!”  Eret said leaving no room for argument.
“Yes, well, the Baron ,” Torey spat.  “Had made a crucial mistake that came out in the courts.  You should really reconsider Mr. Eret.  I hate to see anything  .  .  .   happened to this establishment . ”
“Are you threatening me?”  Eret asked, raising an eyebrow.
“What?!  No!  Not at all!  It’s just that you know, East Side has a high crime rate -”
“Get out!”  Eret shouted, shoving Torey out the door.  “Get out now!”
(East Side, Later that Night)
Motha was flying around East Side enjoying the cool air under her wings, while patrolling.  Motha loved being a Vigilante!  It was so freeing and the best part was that she was able to finally do what the damn Hero Committee, the Order, wouldn’t let her do.  Be an actual Hero and help save lives.  Motha stopped on the roof of some random building and took a few deep breaths.  No use in getting worked up over some old memories.
Motha, like her brother Arachnid, signed up for the Hero Program, wanting to actually be a Hybrid Hero to show everyone that you can be something no matter what!  Well that dream came crashing down when Motha got a heavy dose of reality.  The so-called “Hero Committee” was nothing more than a bunch of old Heroes stuck in their ways!
There was so much politics and certain clicks that you had to be a part of in order to actually be taken seriously.  Not to mention that if the Hero Committee deems your power too “Weak” in their opinion, then you either don’t make it in the Hero Program or like what happened to Motha.  Just be pushed to the side as a Sidekick!
They didn’t even put her as a Hero but as a “Hero-in-Training.”  Translation: “We don’t think your Hero material but since you’ve managed to pass the Hero Program we’re going to have you stick by an actual Hero to learn from.”
Meaning, that you would be put with a Hero and the Hero is your boss and has full control of your pay and what not.  And you don’t even get any credit!  The Hero that you’re the Sidekick to gets all the credit, all the publicity, all the attention, all the perks, all the praise.  Even if you’re the one that saved the day or saved the Hero, you just got overlooked, glossed over, shunned, pretended you were never there.
So, Motha did something that was in the Order’s eyes considered the utmost traitorous and sinful act possible!  Next to actually becoming a Villain.  ( Huh, I wonder if Mom wouldn’t mind teaching me then? )  Motha actually quit!   She left the Hero Tower and became a Vigilante instead.  Of course the Order couldn’t take that lying down so what did they do?  They kept her on as a “Hero” even though her Prime Damn Hero License expired!   They still have her in the system as “Suspended Indefinitely” even though she fully left.  Handed in her resignation, flipped the one in charge of the Committee off and stormed out.  Never to be returned!
Sure she helped out a few Heroes in battle but that’s because the “Minor” Heroes needed help!  The top dogs were too busy doing whatever and of course the Hero Committee would always say, “Help is on the way!”  And it would take them a good half an hour or so to finally show up, defeat the Villain and get all the glory while the actual Heroes that did all the work got a slap on the back and half hearted, “Good Job!”
Yeah, to say Motha wasn’t happy or impressed was a freaking understatement!  Don’t get her wrong, Motha is super proud of her brother, Arachnid!  That dude went through so much just to get where he is!  And proved that he’s just as good as the “Dream Team” or whatever they want to call themselves.
Alright Motha, focus!  You need to calm down!  Yes, no one will hear this inner monolog rant but you need to focus!  You can’t stop crime if you're dwelling on old memories.  Suddenly a moth appeared and landed on Motha’s extended hand.
“Why hello there!  Find anything interesting?”  Motha asked.  The moth told Motha that there was a store about to be robbed.  It spotted a group of thugs heading towards Eret’s!
“Alright let’s go!”  Motha said, spreading her wings and taking off.
(Monarch’s Clothing)
It had been a long day!  Eret was still fuming from the audacity of Torey!  Oh Eret knew perfectly well what the so-called “Critical Mistake” was.  Torey’s Lawyers wound up scaring a few of the interns and literally paid for their silence and to drop the charges.  Luckily they weren’t able to scar them all off and the court proceedings went off without a hitch.  It was one of the most publicized court cases ever!
Eret had nearly gotten themself arrested just by showing up at the Courthouse  in full costume as Baron.  Luckily the Heroes understood that Baron was there for the Witnesses and was a Witness themself.  It was difficult when both Eret and Baron had to be at the Courthouse.  Good thing Eret was on Neutral Terms with a lot of Villains and the more “Villainess” Vigilantes.  Jester and McCormick had saved their butt during those times.
Oh Eret couldn’t wait to finally take down Torey’s Fashion Studio and expose them for the frauds that they are! After saving and sending their reports to their bookkeeper, shutting everything down and locking the safe and Office up.  Eret was about to lock up and then head home, when a crash from the front of the store caught their attention.  Heading to the front of the store, Eret saw a bunch of thugs ransacking the place.
Of course Torey wasn’t going to take Eret saying no and calling them out.  That was another thing about Torey’s that made Eret’s blood boil.  If there was any type of competition then Torey’s would make sure there was no competition by any means necessary.  Including staging a break in and destroying the place.
Eret hit the silent alarm, alerting the cops and was about to dash in the back and quickly change into his Baron costume.  When they heard a familiar female voice.
“Excuse me, but don’t you know it’s past closing time?”  Motha was standing in the doorway leaning against the door frame, arms crossed and what Eret could only assume a raised eyebrow.
One of the thugs charged at Motha and in three quick moves, the thug was down for the count.  And that was all it took, like a signal that was setoff, the group of thugs charged at Motha.  Hoping the numbers game would be enough.  Motha was holding her own, dodging and tanking many hits and strikes.  While landing mostly all of hers.  Then the door burst open and in came Nuke and Ender.
Eret just stood there and watched the fight unfold.  All three Vigilantes were doing well.  It was clear that Nuke and Ender have some training but not nearly enough.  Both of them at least were holding their own without having to rely on their powers.  In about ten minutes, Motha, Nuke and Ender were zip tying the thugs hands to the clothing racks (very clever) and taping weapons to the wall.  Then Motha came over to check on Eret.
“Hey, Eret!  Long time no see!”  Motha greeted.
“Motha, good to see you.  And you must be Nuke and Ender?”  Eret held out their hand.  “I’m Eret, I own this place.  You guys had quite a debut.”
“Eret here helps all Vigilantes with their suits.  In exchange we help keep an eye out for their business.”
“Well, it’s more than that!  You guys do what the Heroes are supposed to do.  Stopping Crime.  So, I offer my services as best as I can.”
“We’ll think about if we need an upgrade,” Nuke said.
“Alright, you guys need to head out before the cops show up,” Eret said.
And with that Ender grabbed both Nuke and Motha and disappeared in a cloud of purple particles.

WHEN it opened in 1910, the 12-story Alwyn Court, at 58th Street and Seventh Avenue, attracted attention with its fabulously intricate facade.
Now the dark streaks of damaged terra cotta panels spot the landmark building, as the co-op that owns it evaluates repairs.
By 1900 Seventh Avenue around Carnegie Hall had New York's most important collection of apartment houses: the block-long Van Corlear, from 55th to 56th Street: the Rembrandt (New York's first co-op) at 152 West 57th; the massive Osborne at 201 West 57th and the eight-building Navarro Flats, stretching east from Seventh at Central Park South.
The apartment market had been invigorated by the new popularity of the co-op, a concept revived beginning in 1902 in a series of buildings on West 67th Street. Their sponsors were several artists, including Walter Russell. In early 1907 Russell had the architects Harde & Short begin work on the cathedral-front studio building at 44 West 77th Street. That summer Russell, working with the developer Alwyn Ball Jr., bought a Seventh Avenue plot at the southeast corner of 58th Street; in September the Real Estate Record & Guide said Russell would build a ''studio palace'' co-op, designed by the same architects.
For some reason Russell dropped out, and Ball reworked the project into one of the most lavish apartment buildings up to that time. The Alwyn Court had two apartments per floor, each with 14 rooms and 5 baths, renting for up to $10,000 a year; one 32-room duplex was offered at $22,000 per year. Harde & Short created a plan with a square, 12-story central light court and groups of entertaining spaces -- music room, living room, library, dining room, gallery and conservatory, which could be thrown together to create 2,000 square feet. In the typical apartment, the largest room was 18 by 30 feet.
Using the new medium of glazed terra cotta, Harde & Short developed the most intricate apartment facade in New York, executed by the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company. The delicate, Gothic details at the entrance and the expanse of French Renaissance styling, all in light gray, rebuked the Victorian brick and brownstone of Seventh Avenue's earlier buildings.
The magazine Architecture praised the ''consummate skill'' of the terra-cotta work and the ''considerable charm'' of the entrance. But it added that while the design of the facade ''if made by a pastry cook, would be of the highest excellence . . . it can hardly be considered at all in the light of architecture.'' The overall result it said, ''defies description.''
In late 1909, the Alwyn Court opened to tenants. Most of them moved from private houses, like Jacob Wertheim, president of United Cigar Stores, who left a 50-foot-wide house at 5 West 76th Street to occupy the duplex. Another was Frederick Steinway; in 1925, as president of his family's piano company, Steinway moved the firm from East 14th Street to its new headquarters at 119 West 57th Street. In 1910 The New York Times noted that these new apartment houses could be just as palatial as private houses, but needed half as many servants. Repairs by the building staff were quick and it was easy to close up the apartment for travel; many tenants spent only a few months in the city.
Only five apartments had been taken by the night of March 4, 1910, when Patrick Quinn, a doorman, saw the reflection of flames in the windows of the Navarro Flats across 58th. He raced to alert the occupants, and Edward King and Robert Casson ran the elevator through the smoke until the motor shorted out.
No one was seriously hurt, although three housemaids, thinking the entire building was in flames, almost jumped from the roof to Seventh Avenue.
''Great Blaze Lights the City,'' said The New York Tribune on page 1, and 10,000 people watched; The Times described the Alwyn Court as ''a huge torch.'' The fire had started in an unoccupied apartment on the ninth floor, and broken through the windows; tongues of fire leapfrogged the blaze to the top.
Despite its luxury, the Alwyn Court was short on fire protection: with no fire escapes and without fire doors, its single narrow stairway served as a perfect chimney flue. There was no central standpipe so firefighters had to thread hose up floor by floor.
The damage was repaired and census records for the 1910's and 1920's indicate the Alwyn Court was fully occupied. But by the 1930's Seventh Avenue was no longer a desirable address and there were only six residential telephone listings in the building in 1936. By 1937 the building was empty.
The Dry Dock Savings Institution foreclosed and gutted the building in 1938, creating 75 apartments where there had been two dozen. Their architect, Louis S. Weeks, removed the heavy cornice and balustrade, and reworked the apartments to retain most of the large rooms.
The original corner entrance was closed, replaced with the present one on Seventh Avenue, and the new Alwyn Court was soon 100 percent rented, producing a gross income of $137,000 a year.
According to research by the architectural historian Andrew Alpern, one of the last tenants, John MacEnulty, salvaged four decorative stone lions for his house in Sands Point, L.I. The paneling from the Wertheim apartment -- described as taken from a French chateau -- was moved to the Squadron A Armory on 94th and Madison Avenue.
IN 1980, with a co-op conversion underway, the architects Beyer Blinder Belle supervised a $500,000 facade restoration, cleaning the terra cotta and replacing damaged blocks with cast concrete replicas. The artist Richard Haas painted a full-height trompe l'oeil mural in the central courtyard; with a new skylight, it became an atrium. The corner entrance was reopened as an entrance for a commercial tenant.
Now, 17 years later, the facade needs more work. Because large chunks of masonry are missing from the fifth-floor balcony, a sidewalk bridge has been erected on Seventh Avenue to protect pedestrians. Although the flat panels on the facade appear intact, about one-third of the window and balcony soffits are visibly damaged.
Gerard Meehan, the property manager for NRK Management, which oversees the building, says that last year a piece of terra cotta fell to the sidewalk. Now engineers are being interviewed, and any work will flow from a consultant's recommendations. Mr. Meehan says he doesn't think this project will be a major one.

How about 44 with just Julie and Reggie?
Julie would never understand why her and the guys spent so much time out in the studio just hanging out. Her house had ample couch space, free access to food, central heat and air. But nope, every day they ended up squishing onto the worn furniture in her mom's old studio. Luke taking up a chair, guitar in his lap, strumming away. Alex and Willie taking up the couch, leaving her and Reggie to fight over the last chair that wasn't hanging from the ceiling.
Today, victory was hers, as she claimed the chair first, leaving Reggie glancing around. He could try to squeeze in with Willie and Alex, but that felt a little third wheely for him. The floor was always an option, but Reggie tried to avoid it if he could, complaining it was not comfortable. This time, a smile lit up his face as he plopped himself down into Julie's lap.
"Ooof!" Julie exclaimed, shoving at Reggie. "I'm not a chair you know!"
"But you're just as comfy," Reggie replied with a wink, shifting a little to make himself at ease.
"Get your bony butt off of me!" Julie said, giggling as Reggie squirmed in her lap.
He gave a fake offended gasp. "Excuse you, I have a lovely and ample backside!"
Alex snorted at that. "I'm sorry Reg, I love you, I do, but your butt is barely there."
Reggie's eyes flew to Luke, putting on his best pout. Luke chuckled, "Sorry dude, he's right. I mean, it's a nice enough butt, for what's there."
"Slander!" Reggie cried. "Guess I will have to take my merely adequate butt and bring it to someone who will appreciate it," He started to get up, only to be hauled back down by Julie.
"Oh give it up, you know I love you, bony butt and all," she said, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "Now, are we doing this stupid History project or what?"
Groans rang out, but everyone dutifully dragged out their notes, starting to discuss the finer points on the wars of South East Asia. Only Julie was straining to see her textbook and keep Reggie in his spot, given his larger frame. "Reggie, this isn't working."
Reggie leapt up, then turned and offered a hand to Julie, pulling her up beside him. Then promptly stole the chair, and before Julie's gasp of indignation left her lips, pulled her down onto his lap, opening the book and resting his chin on her shoulder so they could both read.
"Better?" he whispered, feeling her shiver as his breath disrupted the curls lying by her neck.
"As long as you don't mind my bony butt digging into you," Julie replied.
"So not getting baited into a conversation about your butt and how much I adore it in front of our friends," Reggie replied.
Julie let out a small giggle, then turned the page, continuing to read her text, shifting ever so slightly in Reggie's hold. "Thanks for being a comfy chair."
"You know me, I live to serve," Reggie replied, then let out a yawn as he tried to skim the next paragraph. The words were starting to blur, and he could already feel himself starting to wander away in his thoughts. "But I am about to fall asleep if we don't make this more interesting."
"We could always..." Luke started.
"Mrs. Gable already said we couldn't write a song dude, no," Alex replied, making Luke grumble.
"Maybe a poem?" Willie suggested, trying to mollify his boyfriends before another snipe fest broke out.
Reggie glanced over to where they other three were discussing the finer points of what differentiated the two that would still satisfy their teacher and let himself yawn again. He was warm and cozy, with his best girl in his arms, so he let himself drift.
And if he woke up with Julie still there, also asleep, a blanket thrown over them and his friends absent? Well Reggie really wasn't going to complain. He merely pressed a kiss to Julie's temple, closed his eyes, and let himself go back to sleep.
History could wait, because Reggie's dreams were full of his very happy present, and all the dreams for his future, spent much like this, with Julie in his arms.

Yooo sorry if its a bit much to ask, how did you get into your tattoo role? I'm south uk and there never seems to be an opening to even show portfolio with area artists
Your work is so sick! Huge inspo 🙌🙌
Hey, I know it’s really hard out there in the tattoo industry but one positive about being in London or anywhere in south east England is that more and more DIY and queer owned tattoo studios are opening
I didn’t get into tattooing through the traditional route of an apprenticeship, I bought a tattoo machine and was taught basics by my partner and then developed upon that to be self taught at home, I used Instagram as a tool to build a following for my work and kept drawing and developing, the local queer community was INCREDIBLY supportive during this process, I’m thankful for everyone who came and got tattooed and paid me while I was still learning
through Instagram and getting tattooed by other artists I eventually made friends with the team at a chill queer owned studio and when they announced that they were looking for artists to guest I asked if they would consider me as I was self taught, they liked my work and invited me to come and tattoo as a resident artist, they were welcoming every step of the journey
The studio I work at DOES take on apprentices regularly, mostly on the basis of people who are friendly and ask and make a portfolio, it’s important to give opportunities and diversify the industry in terms of artists and unique style. Best thing to do in my opinion is either start learning DIY from home or find a place you would love to do your apprenticeship or an artist you want to learn from and make friends with them, become a regular client and ask lots of questions, ask them about whether they would be willing to teach you
One thing to remember is that whilst it’s standard for tattoo apprenticeships to be unpaid due to the fact that most tattoo artists are paid by their clients and NOT their studio, many studios treat their apprentices badly. You should be spending your time there learning to tattoo and working on your art, not cleaning somebody’s studio full time (obviously cleaning up your own mess and helping out being a team player is fine) be firm in your boundaries with this, and whilst it may be that the people teaching you can only work with you at certain times, you are also an adult with your own schedule and you have every right to be firm in this. Don’t take industry bullshit or anyone trying to take advantage of you or your time.
Very long text here hope it helps a little

♡ ∘˚˳°∘° About Laby °∘°˚˳∘♡
Tumblr media
A girl born in the middle of the Black Forest, a forest full with demonic energy located near East Lurensia in the Feita Region.
Laby doesn’t know when she was born. One day, she opened her eyes and found herself in the middle of the dark forest, surrounded by shadows and dangerous creatures.
She couldn’t leave the Forest, even if she tried to. After some p̸̥͖̫͕̊̀̎̀̍̇̀͆͠å̴͉͉̳͖͊ĭ̷̡̡͓̘̫̙̳̇͑͊n̴̛̟͈̓͆̽̎̆͝͝͠f̶̢͖̟̣̯̞̈͗̈́͌̑̈̈́͜ͅṳ̵̧̧͈̥̻̰̱̊̓̏̉̃͑̕͝͝ͅl̵͓̪̠̮̥̞͗̽ events, Laby met a mirror that she later named Nisha and they became best friends.
Alongside her, Laby was able to leave the Forest and met a kind man called Bellonde. With the guidance of her new ‘Teacher’, Laby started training to improve her fighting techniques and exploring the world outside the dark forest.
Will Laby learn how to deal with all the new feelings and discoveries she’ll make along the way or will she be engulfed by her emotions and protect herself from the dangers of the world?
“Laby is happy to meet you all. I hope we can be very good friends. Laby will do everything to help you!”
Tumblr media
Laby is a character from the MMORPG game called Elsword, developed by South Korean company KOG Studios. This muse probably will be canon-divergent, since Elsword has a LOT of events going on and I don’t know much about the game yet. I’ll add or change stuff as I play/learn more about the game. I’ll mainly follow her “Radiant Soul” path here, but also use her “Nisha Labyrinth” path if necessary.
Also, she’ll have a magical-girl verse in the future based on the set called Heart El, a re-imagined version of the main characters of the game as magical girls and boys.
Her tag in this blog will be x-radiant-child-x. Feel free to send asks and messages to her.
