SORRY ANON I LEGIT FORGOT ABT THIS ASK and im too lazy to draw her fr so heres some fanart i drew of her dying in a glue trap

this time i have a bit more thoughts on her as an actual character so ill start w that before the headcanon dump ... also, throughout this post ill be referring to her w she/her pronouns because of a personal headcanon im VERY attached to. all i ask is any rbs or further questions abt my specific vision of her use those same pronouns... in others posts i do not care obviously. also, this post is specifically abt her in the dsaf universe since shes far more substantial there.

firstly, i should say i ADORE harry. she is one of my biggest comfort characters in a series where almost everybody is one for me. so when i give any criticisms, know its out of love and a wish for some more expansive writing rather than any malice. being critical of media you love is important, etc etc.

my biggest issues with her character really boils down to the lack of acknowledgement abt her being physically disabled. she mentions having a "bad leg" during 3, but its ONLY mentioned that one time, during (i believe) missable dialogue. i understand her not using, like, mobility aids for it since it may be difficult to find suitable stock images (+ all the phonies in that game use the same photos for their bodies, and its totally possible its not something she feels she needs), but it probably shouldve been mentioned or expanded upon more.

i dont believe were given any explanation on how her leg ended up the way it is, or in what way it is. we dont know if she was born with her disability or aquired it later. we dont know if its paralyzed, we dont know if its because of a muscular dystrophy, or anything else. i just wish we were given more info, bcus as it is, it is REALLY easy to look over in favor of, say, her ptsd.

speaking of which, i have some mixed feelings on how her ptsd is portrayed. on one hand, the joke in the restaurant reviews abt her having flashbacks and a subsequent panic attack feels very distasteful, though thankfully this is (i believe) the only instance of this kind of joke at her expense. im glad elsewise it isnt some huge , controlling part of her character - however, again, it IS missable. while one can assume she has it when she discusses her past, i dont believe its explicitly stated UNTIL that review.

tldr; her disability feels poorly handled, mostly from lack of expansion and discussion.

thankfully, though, she is elsewise a very enjoyable character; shes got some really good and funny dialogue, the exposition we get from her about the original managers is really fucking good, and i really wish we heard more abt her experience working with rebecca (and presumably roger)... again, her biggest issues are just not having as much of a spotlight on her as she couldve, but considering the employees arent really the main focus of the game that may be fine actually...

(as an aside, i think about this post every day and cry audibly.)

has ptsd in canon, but im adding a "c" in front of that cause aint no way she lived through all of her coworkers (and presumably FRIENDS) dying in such horrific ways and was only affected in the short-term.

autistic! specifically also has the thing i do where i need the time to be a multiple of 5 before i can start doing anything. also has generalized anxiety i think, with a tendency to catastrophize and compensates by insisting to herself everything is toootally fine. definitely NOT going to have a breakdown rn because shes not totally sure that that vending machine is 100% not going to fall on her specifically

probably didnt have many friends as a kid (L) so now she overcompensates by trying to be as charming and polite as possible. wether or not this works in her favor or makes her seem pretentious is a coinflip. (its certainly working on me though!)

has a real soft spot for random niche animals. probably a big salamander and gecko girl. her favorite is the marbled salamander because its cute as hell

slightly off topic everyday i think of how fucking horrific it mustve been for joe to come into work one morning and his best friend just has a phone for a head and extreme memory issues now . literally what the fuck. thats so fucked up

uhm, so, i think i maybe might be trans (ftm) because i’m super dysphoric and i sometimes look at guys and i get really jealous because they just get to, like, exist like that (i’m not really sure what the “that” is, but god, do i want it) and i very much don’t and when i refer to myself using he/him pronouns in my head it feels, uhm, at the risk of being a cliche, right, i guess.

but the thing is that i don’t really fit into any of the stereotypical trans guy things. like a lot of my friends when i was little were girls and though i have some stereotypically masculine hobbies (sports and physics) i also sew, and when i was little i was obsessed with being a princess for like a month before i started refusing to wear dresses.

i don’t think i’m non-binary, i tried using they/them pronouns this summer and while they didn’t actively hurt like she does, they didn’t really feel right.

so, like, am i lying to myself? i don’t know, maybe i just want to be special (i don’t want it, though, if i could just be happy as a girl i would).

my best advice for situations like this is i know its easy but don't let yourself get caught up in the trap of "well this is the label that makes me feel best but i dont technically check off every single box for it so am i just lying?" people arent video game quests, you dont have to hit every single box for it to count, youre allowed to have stuff fall outside the technical definition of a term while still calling yourself it. im very similar to you, i was in tap and ballet growing up, wore dresses and makeup for most of highschool, sewing crocheting knitting the whole shebang. but the important part is that none of those things make a difference to your identity. knowing how to sew doesnt make you a girl, it can just make you a guy who knows how to sew. its a thing you do, not who you are.

all that being said, i think another helpful angle to look at things is "does the distinction between two similar labels actually make a difference to me?" using myself as an example again, i dont call myself a trans man because while i do prefer presenting masculine, for some reason the term 'man' just doesnt feel right for me. but at the same time, to the rest of the world that's functionally what i am, right? so does that change /who/ i am? no. so for me personally, ive deliberately chosen not to file myself into either "trans man" or "nonbinary" and just move on with my day, because to me it doesnt actually make a difference which one i am, im still gonna stay on t, i still want top surgery, i still want to be perceived masculine, and thats not gonna change no matter what name is on the box so who gives a shit. just do what makes you happy

im so smad over how most things try to go out of their way to be like ‘oh well its up for interpretation’ or try to explain away nonbinary characters’ genders in a way that makes sense so that its not them being nonbinary, its Just that they arent male or female because this thing!

like come on you had the ball then you fuckin dropped it by saying people can use whatever pronouns and while im sure there are nonbinary people who use every pronoun it sucks when the canon explicitly uses they and then people just. paste their own idea of gender onto them like theyre some sort of blank slate when they arent. and even if they WERE it wouldnt give people a free pass to just paste whatever pronouns onto them?

like...i see so many people who have no idea that characters like wx-78 from dont starve are nonbinary because their identity is erased so much when the game refers to them as explicitly they/them and uses mx. as a gender neutral title. frisk from undertale is one of (few) nonbinary human characters. they used they/them pronouns the ENTIRE game and at the end the twist was hey! frisk is THEIR OWN PERSON. and even if they were a stand-in for the player, what makes autonomy = getting gendered correctly?? you’d still correct yourself if a cat or a dog gets misgendered, why the fuck cant the same courtesy be given to nonbinary people? binary people’s genders are not ‘up for interpretation’ all the time because people would get real fucking salty about it. from what ive seen its only nonbinary characters and on occasion binary trans people as an excuse to misgender them. (also, chara, kris, monster kid, napstablook, and several others from undertale are nonbinary but get similar erasure because people gender them as well) with warframe, xaku came out i was so excited because hell yeah they look so cool and have the aesthetics that are right up my alley...and then people used binary pronouns or used it even if their pronouns were Right There in their desc and while people use it pronouns for warframes a lot its like. you use ember’s and excalibur umbra’s just fine? whats stopping you with xaku?? (not even gonna start with nezha or else i will get actually angry at how people treat him)

there’s an argument to be had over them being a robot/described as broken/made of multiple parts but...the canon still uses they? so use they? fucks sake?

idk it just...gets me tilted at the towers or whatever but i legitimately hope that there’s a nonbinary character that doesnt have any like explanation for them being nonbinary and they just...are. give me nonhuman characters who are like ‘yeah im nonbinary! i use they/them and i dont have an explanation behind why. i just am’. give me more (sorely needed) human nonbinary characters that are treated with respect and not just referred to as whatever pronoun Works For You. please god give me characters that are like ‘hey, i am this thing! specifically!’ and not dodge the word by using everything but the word nonbinary.

edit: i should also add that there is a difference between a nonbinary person hcing a character to use both they and another pronoun and people intentionally using the wrong ones and while ik sometimes people dont always know a character is nonbinary it’d be appreciated if they could at least correct themselves when it happens

A little bit about me

Hi I'm Bethan, I'm 22 and I am an adult baby girl (little age 6). My pronouns are she/her but they/them is ok too. I like stuffies, animals, cute/kawaii aesthetic, dummies, sippy cups, adult baby clothing, lolita fashion, cartoons, anime and video games.
