Let's talk about yesterday 😆

After seeing Across the Spider-Verse on Saturday night, I woke up with a stiff neck + remembered a certain book from the library I'd often look at. With further research, I found out there was an updated version of that book on shelf. The library didn't open til 1 so I spent the morning just chilling + playing mobile games :P

I reexplored the 1st floor again. I'll say this again: a lot has changed. The little cafe area used to be on the left side of the entrance. The Maker Studio is so brand new to me. The guest services used to be on the left side instead of straightforward as you entered.

They got ps4 + ps5 console games to check out now? Too bad they didnt have anything older :( I'm glad I took a picture of the map that led me to the graphic novel section.

Oh! I also ran into an old customer too :D that was a pleasant sight to see :)

I explored the graphic novel section. This Manga caught my attention 1st.

An ex-yakuza boss gives up his mafia life to be a house husband. The concept is adorable. The execution... wish they'd tone down his scary aura.

And then I found what I was looking for:

I grabbed a seat nearby + began looking thru page by page X3 The pages were exactly as I remembered! Some I'd constantly stare at longer than others. Knowing me, I didn't read much back then. Only looked at the pictures :P The ones I did read yesterday were about the death of the Stacys (to understand how/why this event is so important to Spider-Man's life), Doc Ock (bcuz of the last shot in Spider-Man 2 that resembles a certain panel), the Prowler (that was eye-opening for me in terms on how it connects to Spider-Verse), the Spider-Women (mostly about Jess Drew), + Spider-Man 2099 (aka one of the main updated contents).

As much as I want to talk about Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099, it could lead to Spider-Verse spoilers 😬 So, nope!

I felt like I spent a good hour reading/looking at that book :) After that fill of childhood nostalgia, I went upstairs to the 2nd floor. I should've taken a picture of the map but didn't bcuz I didn't see one 😕

The 2nd floor is more flipped around. 1st, the children's section was on the right side. I can remember all the pokemon VHS tapes, kids music cds, + computer games X) When I was in high-school, that became the teen + Manga section. I definitely do have some footage on my YouTube channel of me talking to the camera in the library back then. Now, it has become an updated version of the children's section o.o

The teen + Manga section was to the left side of the 2nd floor.

I used to hang aroubd here after school (which was across the street) all the time! (See 1st + earliest entries @ lpfreakification.tumblr.com/tagged/life/chrono) I felt like there used to be a bit more than this 🤔 No matter, some Manga were still in shelf that I used to read a lot back in the day, like Bleach + Shugo Chara X3 Some, unfortunately, like Fushigi Yugi, weren't there :( However, redemption came in the form of Arata the Legend! It was one of those Manga I was quite invested in + was eager for the next volume to come out 😃 I did make two fanarts from there but cant remember if i uploaded them on my dA or not. That jogged my memory of the story. I did catch up on two of the three that were right there. It just *had* to be the *13th* volume that shook me. Damn, I was fanning myself from the thrills. I looked up how many volumes there were. About 22 or 23? Idk bcuz there's also some remastered version I couldn't wrap my head around in. Also, they have an anime? Eh, from the looks of it, looks low-qual, off, tacky? Yeah, I like how the Manga looks more than the anime :P

The library closes at 5. Lucky for me, I had an hour to spare :) I spend a good 10 minutes of what I wanted to do next. I was craving a mango frozen yogurt from Red Mango but it's still a drive. It's not far but it's an effort XP So I looked up anything similar to nab from Target. I was right :D

A Target run later, I went home, ordered pizza from my old job, + tried this out.

Needless to say, I liked it 😆

It was somewhere past 5 pm. I mostly chilled in the kitchen until the pizza arrived. It was good to see my old coworker doing well. I do tip big bcuz 1. It makes them very happy + 2. It makes up for any other s****y tippers. I liked how he skipped back to his car like the little kid he is (he's 20), happy with his tip + visiting me too.

I keep forgetting to add pepperoni to my pizza online lately. No matter, I ate the majority of it anyway 😋 With 6 square pieces left, I was stuffed. That was a 14-inch.

I went back to my room somewhere around 6 pm. Played mobile games until I fell asleep. Last time I checked it was 6:55 pm.

And now it is 6:53 am + wide awake rn, despite writing this entry for the past 30 minutes. Man, did I sleep or what. I'm glad I didn't wake up in the middle of the night last night. Now... what do I wanna do today? 🤔

College & Soulmate AU; Scenario

Thank you so much, we’re glad you liked it !! But no, but let me tell you how we screamed at each other for literally half an hour when we saw this request. There were too many good soulmate AUs we ended up using a generator aksjdhas.

The first time you and your soulmate touch you get stuck together for a while.

December is when you find him sleeping on campus grounds. He’s resting on one of the outdoor tables, book open, with arms covering the pages. Snow is falling, and you’re cold even with a heavy fur coat and umbrella keeping the white specs from melting into your hair.

You’re not sure if you should wake him up despite the fact that he was wearing nothing other than a T-shirt and some jeans, but he doesn’t seem very bothered. Well, that is until he sneezes. It’s followed by some incoherent grumbling and nearly scares the shit out of you, but it’s enough for you to decide to help.

“Hey,” you poke his cheek with the butt of your umbrella, not too fond of touching strangers. “Hey!”

He doesn’t stir, and you’re left wondering if anyone else has tried to help him before you showed up and ended up leaving it be because he wouldn’t budge.

Still, you couldn’t leave him here in this type of temperature; so you decide to leave your umbrella behind. It’s long enough to lean against the table and shield him from the ever piling snow without directly touching any part of his body and possibly bothering his rest- not that you think it would. He didn’t flinch even when you yelled at him.

December is when you’re working at Shakky’s bar late into the night to pay off your college tuition.

Those loans wouldn’t pay themselves after all and the salary was good.

The company at the bar itself was interesting to say the least. You could never truly say you had a dull night while working there. Be it the slurring drunks and their awful attempts at pickup lines, to the terribly sobering tales that would be shared across the counter; it was an eye opening experience.

Tonight would be much like any other- at least, that’s what you had thought until a familiar man comes through the door.

He seemed well- that was good. You didn’t give it too much thought, after all, you were on the clock and this was a rather popular bar for the student body to frequent. From the way Shakky greets him, he must’ve been a regular long before you had begun working here.

Setting down the glass you had been mindlessly polishing, your attention is drawn towards a customer sitting near the back of the bar. He’s a bit louder than the other customers, but you were pretty used to that. Eustass Kid came in all the time and drank until he either passed out or his blonde haired friend carried him out forcefully. At the very least he wasn’t bothering anybody.

“Excuse me,” the green haired man raises a hand, successfully catching your attention. It seems he was done talking to Shakky by now.

“Yes?” You make your way over, an award-winning customer service smile tugging at the corner of your lips. “What can I get for you?”

He ends up getting a few, maybe more than a few, beers. This man sure could drink.

December is when your car decides it needs its own break from the cold winter snow. It thankfully doesn’t break down anywhere too traffic heavy, and there’s an auto-repair shop not even five minutes away.

“Oh, hello,” you greet, surprised to see a familiar face working here. He’s wearing a tank-top and some slacks, and this time you think the attire is appropriate given how much he was sweating.

The owner, Franky, had more than generously came to pick up your mobile and gave you a ride along the way, saying it would be done the same day. I have a reliable repairman, he said more than just a bit too loudly for comfort.

The male glances up at you for a second before going back to finish up on the vehicle he was already occupied with. “Hey, there.” You’re not too sure if he recognizes you- it’s a hard to not recognize him- but that’s fine, you just needed your car fixed.

It doesn’t take him very long to finish up on his current project before moving onto yours. He thankfully doesn’t ask any questions, it seems like the owner had already filled him in, and just starts working.

“You know,” he spares you a glance, picking up another tool. “He said it’d be done the same day but it’s still gonna take a few hours. Don’t you have anything better to do?”

“Unfortunately not,” you sigh. The only plans you had were to go back home and take a long, long nap, but there was no way you were going to walk back in this type of weather. For a while, you’re standing around a little awkwardly, fiddling with the fluffs of your sleeves before he speaks up.

“If you want you could sit inside where it’s warmer. There’s a TV and some magazines you could read to keep you occupied.” You debate that for a bit, looking through the glass door to the waiting area, but ultimately decide to stick around for a bit longer.

“It’s fine,” you say with a smile. You could wait inside later, for now you’d want to wander a bit. It’s not every day you’d get to go to an auto-repair shop and you’ve always been a bit curious with how often Kid yells about it in the bar. “Would it be alright if I take a look around?”

He gives a grunt of approval and you make yourself comfortable, roaming the workshop. It’s quite big, and you hadn’t noticed ‘til now that the walls were painted in vibrant blues, red, and yellow. It matched the owner’s eccentric personality.

“Oh,” a stand hidden to the back of the shop catches your attention; a lone umbrella resting on its handles. Yours- to be more precise. “You use an umbrella during snow time?” You hadn’t bothered to ask for it back, the thought never really occurred to you. Considering they weren’t that expensive buying a new one wouldn’t be much of a hassle. If anything, you were more surprised he’s kept it around.

The male clears his throat, stopping whatever it was he was doing to your car and wipes his hands down with a towel. “Actually,” he admits sheepishly, “I’ve been meaning to return it to you. I just kept forgetting.”

You raise a brow, “You knew it was mine?”

“I’ve seen you use it around campus before,” he admits. “Not a lot of people use an umbrella while it’s snowing, and the color’s pretty vibrant so it’s hard to not notice. I had wanted to give it to you when I visited the bar, but you were constantly busying yourself so I never got the chance.”

A chuckle escapes your lips at his little confession. He seemed like such an intimidating guy, with the furrowed brows and scar over his eye, but he was a lot more awkward than one would expect. “Well,” you catch his attention. “I’m working there again tomorrow night if you want to come give it to me in person.” December is when you’re sparing hopeful glances at the door every time the bell chimes.

“Expecting someone?” Shakky teases, coming behind the bar and pouring herself a glass.

“Something like that,” you mutter before making your way past her to attend to someone in the corner of the room. It’s the same person from around two weeks ago- he’s louder this time, but there were also less customers tonight and no one seems to be complaining any so you let it slide. “Yes? How may I hELP-?!”

What you can’t let slide is how he forcefully grabs your wrist and essentially drags your body to lean over the table. “Ah, damn,” you’re used to drunks, not idiots. He has a permanent grin plastered over his lips and his grip on your wrist tightens. “I can’t let go! Guess we must be soulmates!”

There is no explaining the disgust that washes over your face. “Sir, I’m asking you politely to let go.”

Everyone who goes here knows that it’s simply an unwritten rule to not fight unless you wanted to be beaten half to death. Not by you- dear lord no- Shakky on the other hand was ruthless and you’d never want to end up on the other side of her fist.

Ever.

“Huh?” He slurs, “didn’t I just tell you that I can’t let go?”

“I’m telling you-” before you’re able to get anymore words out another hand wraps around the older man’s wrist, successfully shutting you up. For a second, the dread of it being one of his friends rises, but it’s quickly crushed by the voice that follows.

“I’m sure you’re not deaf. She said let go.”

The bar is dead silent for a few seconds before the man roughly releases his grip on your arm. A bit gentler would’ve been nice, you internally grumble, rubbing the sore area.

“Hey there, could I ask exactly what you were trying to do with my precious barkeep?” Your boss comes over, leaning against the table. She gives you a wink and a slight nudge of her head towards the break room and you don’t think twice before leaving the scene, your green haired friend following close behind.

“Is your wrist alright?” He questions as soon as the door closes. “My bad for being late, I got held back by some work Franky wanted done.”

His hand reaches out to gently hold your wrist and a spark of electricity shocks you both. Usually, your first instinct would be to flinch and pull away, but he has a firm grip.

“Uhm,” you glance down, then back up at him. “It’ll probably bruise tomorrow but it’s nothing to worry too much about...”

His face is unreadable, and after a couple seconds his ears turn a faint shade of red. “I can’t let go.”

You chuckle at his poor attempt of a joke. “C’mon now, we just went through this.” You lift your free hand to pry his fingers off your wrist only to feel the same electric shock as earlier. It doesn’t hurt, only stinging enough to really initially surprise anyone, but you quickly realize he wasn’t trying to pull your leg.

Oh.

“So,” he awkwardly lifts his other hand. “I brought your umbrella.”

prices - page 2 for mobile

please read the guidelines too, I say what I will do, what I won’t do, and explain very important things. this page was divided due to eccessive html that was breaking the post. for types of rp icons and screencaps, here.

note: I get all sort of fees from changing money to transferring it because paypal taxes everything, therefore it seems fair to “raise” the price if you pay in usd, considering this is the actual difference:

So, for example, looking at my most expensive type of icons, the 7th C, because the difference seems to be the biggest, you’ll find:

between 100 and 199 icons: 0.15 euro / 0.19 usd. For example for 150 icons would be at 22.5 euro / 28.7 usd instead of 30 euro / 45 usd.

this may look a big difference on paper. In reality 0,15 euro are 0.18 dollars, and 22.5 euros does equal to 27.65. If I made you pay 0.18 I’d lose money because paypal takes a fee when changing it in euro, this way I only lose a tiny bit if any.

200 icons of type c? 0.03 euro / 0.041 usd for each, so it will be 6 euro / 8.2 usd. 6 euros actually equals to 7.3 dollars so I’m barely covering the fee.

ARE THERE ANY SALES/DISCOUNTS?

-since Jan 1st, icons from type 7 to type 10 will get a 10% discount on the final price, ‘til date to be determined!

-starter pack of at least 100 icons of any kind (except the base one, in which case it’s 200 icons because the first 100 are free) with psd or not, at least 2 banners, a header = gets you a 15% discount on the final price on top of whatever other discount you can get buying more things that have one, like the psds.

-banners have their own built-in discounts, see below. So do psd, after 100 icons the price is 50% off.

-you’ll find under every icon type the price for each but also the discount for bigger batches of icons, which grows as they go.

Currently I don't have promos nor themes backgrounds here because I'm still preparing examples/seeing what I can do and not do. Same goes for custom html and more things. However you can check my sidebar for links to first promos/theme backgrounds and prices for those "models".

are 0.2 euro/0.3 usd each if you are buying something else too, you can request transparent ones with something in the background, or pattern backgrounds or special shapes, shadows and glows. If you want all of the above it’s 0.4 euro/0.6 usd. Because paypal would take most of it, if you are ONLY buying dash icons I will make you five for you to choose and keep, so a pack is either 1 or 2 euros / 1.5 or 3 usd, depending on your choices.

If you want me to add them to the icons it will be one 0.02 euros/0.025 usd more for every icon (2 euro / 2.5 usd every 100) After the first 100 icons, the rest of the psd price will be cut in a half. 150 psds for your icons would cost 2.5 euro / 3.12 usd instead of 3 euro / 3.75 usd.

-the price stays the same if you offer the icons, seeing as it’s about making the psd, then adding and adjusting the psd to each icon. (pre-made icons must be made by you or by someone who gave you permission to edit. If you credit me somewhere please make clear I only offered the psd).

j, k and l have a gradient too so there are several examples to show how it changes images depending on the original coloring

Also general banners I make and share in ‘my banners’ tag.

-1 euro/2.5 usd for each static banner, can be done in similar style or with changes (for example one has a rectangular avatar, one has an oval one).

-2 euros/3.5 usd for each with overlay.

-4 euro/5.5 usd for each with gif.

I’m thinking that a ‘pack’ could be of five: starter call, open starter, plotting call, headcanons, answers. If you take five or more (those 5 or you may need a different banner I’m not thinking of, like an ooc banner instead of a open starter one? up to you), you get a 10% discount on the final price. -after the first five banners, each additional secondary banner for a different verse will be 40% off; consider that it will likely need different images and colors from the other verse one, so it’s a different new banner. If you want the same identical one and just the name of the verse changes, it will be only 0.4 euro/0.8 usd.

We’ll need to discuss colors, images, borders, glows, shadows, your url/character name and whatever else you want in it, I want them to be as close as what you want as possible.

headers

I am currently deciding what I can offer, you can see what I have done up until now with headers here. I know I can offer far more options, but if you already like those (and again, obvously it will be a back and forth, you can ask for your url, quotes, tell me whether to add something or not to what I’ll show you) I think it’s safe to say that I’ll ask:

-3 euros/4.5 usd for a header, static or with overlay.

-5 euro/ 6.5 usd for a header with gif.

-7 euro / 8.5 usd for a header with double overlay or gif + overlay. 1 additional euro/2 additional usd for any more gifs or overlays you may want on top

shapes and how many borders/’things’ to add on the basic icon you want will determine in which category the icon you have requested falls and therefore how much it costs.

examples:

“Ele, can you make me 150 of your 100px circle icons with semi-transparent border exactly like in 5c, but with your psd H? Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan in episodes 5x8 or 2x9 or 5x10 or all of them...”

“Sure, once I’m done it it will be 12.25 euro (9,75 for the icons + 2.5 for psd)/ 15,87 usd (12.75 usd for icons + 3.12 for psd). I’ll make you a few examples so you can tell me if it’s okay or I need to change something”

“Oh I can’t spend more than 10 euro/12 usd!”

“okay, so if you want at least 150 icons with psd you have to put aside 2.5 euro/3.12 usd for it, so let’s see which ones you can get for 7.5 euro or 8.8 usd... up until type 3″ (type 3 in usd is 9.03 but I’ll throw in a few icons for free)

Feel free to ask me questions about ANYTHING! If you want to ask if I can take a commission now (but read my guidelines first!) and you are at loss of what to say, I’d suggest a ‘hi Ele, can you take commissions? I’d need at least X icons (or ‘I don’t know how many icons yet, let’s talk about it later’) of this fc, possibly from these movie/episodes’ this way even if timezones keep us apart I’ll be able to check as soon as possible if I can find resources to do it, if I have the time, etc and come back to discuss aesthetic with you and if maybe there aren’t enough usable caps to make icons depending on their quality and whether you only want close shots or not. Ims, ask and submit are all available. Everything else doesn’t require me looking for many screencaps as icons do, so you can just check 'hey are you open for banners commissions?’ (for example) and later I’ll come ask you about what you’d like. If you see me online after you send the ask and I haven’t replied even just with a 'sorry, super busy now but I’ll get back to you asap’ (probably because looking after my grandfather or too sick to sit up) I didn’t get the ask, try ims or submit or anything because I will not ignore you. I’ll make a commission form soon so I won’t risk losing anything and we’ll skip having to wait for the other to be online, at least for those first details.

First Post - A Look Back at the Beginning

Hello frendos! Cassie here, bringing you our very first Dev Blog post. We wanted to tell our story thus far and give you a look into what development has been like on MEKA Puppers. It certainly has been an exciting trip and there’s a fair bit to cover, so strap in! Or take a comfy seat with some tea or hot cocoa and relax. Whatever you’re feeling like.

Beginning of August 2018, we started to really dig our feet in with development. This is when I started on the team! At this point, JP had already put together a small proof-of-concept prototype to build on. It consisted of a singular test level, minimal UI, a rough sketch dog character 3D model (which would later become our good boi, Scout), and the beginnings of a Mek editor. Looking back, the game didn’t even have a win or lose condition yet, which makes me chuckle a little. But the foundation was ready, and we were excited to build up from there.

A little bit of a side note; this game was originally going to be a fairly different beast. We were planning on launching on mobile plaforms, and releasing it as a freemium game with gacha mechanics. We realized pretty early into development that due to some complications, we weren’t going to be able to do that the way we had planned. So, we switched over to making MEKA Puppers to be launched on PC and macOS (and hopefully consoles, fingers crossed). This meant changing gears in a few places.

For starters, the game would have to be MUCH more narrative and progress-driven. Since Mek parts would no longer be collected via gacha mechanics, we’d have to switch from items being a random-drop to having a way to purchase them with collected in-game currency or through progression (spoilers, we ended up doing both). We also had to make considerations for changing the screen orientation from portrait to landscape, and for controls switching over to mouse from touch. Not to mention, we had to determine how much we’re selling the game for (and trust me, thinking about that is fairly nerve wracking). These were challenging hurdles to jump, but I like to think we handled them well!

Heading into winter, we were looking to prepare for conventions. We wanted to start building hype as well as gather as much player feedback as possible. We were overjoyed to hear that one of our favourite cons, MAGFest, had accepted our application to their indie games showcase, and we got to work straight away on a demo version of the game. The demo included 5 levels, which were designed to introduce the main plot of the narrative, an improved mek editor, and a selection of parts and pilots to customize with.

We also had to think about marketing, which meant designing a banner for our table, as well as materials to give away to people. We ended up putting together some pretty fun items; buttons featuring the faces of our beloved pilots (and Katsu), 3D-printed magnets of our corgi pilot, Toast, and wearable papercrafts of Katsu’s own mask. We had a great time showing off the game, generating interest, and gathering feedback from players. We learned a lot about what we could do to improve the game.

It’s been a good chunk of time since then, and we have made quite a few additions and improvements. The garage and Mek editor received some SUBSTANTIAL upgrades in terms of functionality, polish and readability. In general, the UI and quality of life have seen improvements, based off feedback from the demo at MAGFest.

We’re particularly excited about the addition of the foundations for our level up (lvl PUP!), abilities and skill tree systems, the Mek parts shop (run by a Very Good Boy who we have yet to name), and most importantly, a feature we’ve been wanting to add for a long while, the Pupper Park, where you can see and (GASP!) pet all of the doggo pilots you’ve befriended! Because, come on. If your game has dogs in it, you should be able to pet them. Very important.

We also wanted to sprinkle in a few small details that add to the charm of the game (enemies say things like “ouch!” when they take damage now. Almost makes me feel bad for them). We’re still in alpha, but the game really looks to be shaping up into something pretty solid. Honestly, looking back while writing this post, I realize how much we’ve managed to accomplish, and it feels pretty good.

We have lots left to do! The environment art has been given some TLC, and is continuing to be improved on as we speak thanks to our new hire (Keep up the good work, Danni!). We’re also going to gradually add new Mek parts and pilots, and roll out new attack types and effects for weapons. Pilots’ abilities and skill trees are going to be fully fleshed out so that your pilot choice makes a difference to the Meks you deploy. We've started to improve on Mek part models, and are going to do a boatload more visual improvements to things like pilot models and animations. Narrative is going to be hugely expanded on as well (can’t wait to tell you about the surprise twist involving… actually, maybe I shouldn’t spoil it).

Eventually, this will all add up to some closed alpha (and beta) testing! One of the things we decided we wanted to do pretty early on is to build a community around the alpha and beta testing of the game, not only for the sake of finding and stomping out bugs, but also to gather feedback from our players. We want to know what kinds of things people want to see in MEKA Puppers when it releases. We’ve already got a discord server (It’s right over HERE btw) ready to go, and we’re looking forward to interacting with our community there over the course of the game’s development!

Of course, we’re going to continue to post WIP and behind-the-scenes content regularly on our social media, our discord, and right here on this dev blog page (although going forward the updates won’t be NEARLY as wordy… probably a good thing, huh?), so stay tuned for those! And, we’ll be looking to do more convention appearances, so we’ll be announcing those as well. The Commission has proposed a Data Governance Act to encourage reuse of industrial (and other) data, with another data regulation and rules on political ads transparency proposal slated as coming next year. European-flavored guardrails for use of AI will also be presented next year.

But it’s the DSA and DMA that are core to understanding how the EU executive body hopes to reshape internet business practices to increase accountability and fairness — and in so doing promote the region’s interests for years to come.

These are themes being seen elsewhere in the world at a national level. The U.K., for example, is coming with an “Online Safety Bill” next year in response to public concern about the societal impacts of big tech. While rising interest in tech antitrust has led to Google and Facebook facing charges of abusive business practices on home turf.

What will come faster, a U.S. breakup of a tech empire or effective enforcement of EU rules on internet gatekeepers is an interesting question to ponder. Both are now live possibilities — so entrepreneurs can dare to dream of a different, freer and fairer digital playground. One that’s not ruled over by a handful of abusive giants. Though we’re certainly not there yet.

With the DSA and DMA the EU is proposing an e-commerce and digital markets framework that, once adopted, will apply for its 27 Member States — and the ~445 million people who live there — exerting both a sizable regional pull and seeking to punch up and out at global internet giants.

While there are many challenges ahead to turn the planned framework into pan-EU law, it looks a savvy move by the Commission to separate the DSA and DMA — making it harder for big tech to co-opt the wider industry to lobby against measures that will only affect them in the 160+ pages of proposed legislation now on the table.

It’s also notable that the DSA contains a sliding scale of requirements, with audits, risk assessments and the deepest algorithmic accountability provisions reserved for larger players.

Tech sovereignty — by scaling up Europe’s tech capacity and businesses — is a strategic priority for the Commission. And rule-setting is a key part of how it intends to get there — building on data protection rules that have already been updated, with the GDPR being applied from 2018.

Though what the two new major policy packages will mean for tech companies, startup-sized or market-dominating, won’t be clear for months — or even years. The DSA and DMA have to go through the EU’s typically bruising co-legislative process, looping in representatives of Member States’ governments and directly elected MEPs in the European parliament (which often are coming at the process with different policy priorities and agendas).

The draft presented this month is thus a starting point. Plenty could shift — or even change radically — through the coming debates and amendments. Which means the lobbying starts in earnest now. The coming months will be crucial to determining who will be the future winners and losers under the new regime so startups will need to work hard to make their voices heard.

While tech giants have been pouring increasing amounts of money into Brussels “whispering” for years, the EU is keen to champion homegrown tech — and most of big tech isn’t that.

A fight is almost certainly brewing to influence the world’s most ambitious digital rulebook — including in key areas like the surveillance-based adtech business models that currently dominate the web (to the detriment of individual rights and pro-privacy innovation). So for those dreaming of a better web there’s plenty to play for.

Early responses to the DSA and DMA show the two warring sides, with U.S.-based tech lobbies blasting the plan to expand internet regulation as “anti-innovation” (and anti-U.S.), while EU rights groups are making positive noises over the draft — albeit, with an ambition to go further and ensure stronger protections for web users.

On the startup side, there’s early relief that key tenets of the EU’s existing e-commerce framework look set to remain untouched, mingled with concern that plans to rein in tech giants may have knock-on impacts — such as on startup exits (and valuations). European founders, whose ability to scale is being directly throttled by big tech’s market muscle, have other reasons to be cheerful about the direction of policy travel.

In short, major shifts are coming and businesses and entrepreneurs would do well to prepare for changing requirements — and to seize new opportunities.

But it also wants to improve consumer protections and dial up transparency and accountability on services businesses by setting new due diligence obligations — responding to a smorgasbord of concerns around the impact of what’s now being hawked and monetized online (whether hateful content or dangerous/illegal products).

Some EU Member States have also been drafting their own laws (in areas like hate speech) that threatens regulatory fragmentation of the bloc’s single market, giving lawmakers added impetus to come with harmonized pan-EU rules (hence the DSA being a regulation, not a directive).
